BE WARY OF ART STEALERS!

can’t stress this enough but I’m sure some of you have seen this person around lately

DO NOT LIKE OR REBLOG THEIR POSTS.

this account basically takes ninjago art (or what they think is ninjago art) from artists all around the internet without permission and posts them on their account in batches. When asked if the art was theirs, they said yes

This is a bold faced lie. Whoever this person was didn’t take the time to remove watermarks and it’s incredibly obvious they’re stealing other peoples work. Some watermarks are blatantly obvious.

One of them wasn’t even ninjago art, it was ATLA art I believe.

Included the full image for this one so y’all can see the account for proof (though honestly you could easily go to the account and find one with somebody else’s watermark within seconds) and also see how this person is gaining off of other peoples work. This stolen art should NOT have 35 notes.

Don’t support this person. Support the actual artists the art belongs to. Many of them can be found by the watermarks!

I recommend people block them, or if you want to keep an eye on the situation I recommend you always check the account posting the art before liking or reblogging right now. Going off of style or recognizability will NOT help you because they’re stealing from other artists with various art styles - and some of them are also here on tumblr.

I don’t like doing this and I don’t know how many people it’ll even reach but PLEASE be careful of who you support right now.

It also goes to show that you might want to do background checks if someone is acting suspicious! Obviously don’t make your judgement off of a vibe but if someone is posting with little to no words and just posting art at insane frequencies with watermarks or styles that don’t seem to line up, maybe you should look into it before supporting them. Of course, sometimes it’ll be a false alarm, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

It’s not just this person, I’ve noticed other instances of art theft recently, so I would also like to remind artists to watermark their works!

My recommendation is to have an obvious watermark that people WILL see if it gets stolen by someone careless (I.e like this instance) and I recommend having it overlap with several different colors and shading and such so that it’s more difficult to edit out. I also might recommend hiding smaller watermarks inside your work that are less obvious so that if more careful people do edit out the first watermark, you can still have a fail safe.

UPDATE: Im pretty sure the main person behind the theft was either banned or deleted their account. I will be keeping this up for a bit so people can learn from this instance. While the original person is gone, art theft is still something that can and will happen. Let this be a reminder that you should always watermark any art you post to the internet if you don’t want it stolen! An unwatermarked piece of art is harder to trace back to the artist than a watermarked one. Even if watermarks can be removed, they discourage people from theft. If a work has no watermarks, people can and will try to get away with it, and the only way anybody will know is if they’ve seen the original artist post the work before. Of course, some people might not care while stealing, but it will tell people something’s up.

Prices are based on the level of detail in the piece and are split based on if the commission is an icon/headshot piece, or a half/Fullbody piece.

Tumblr's new policy, and updates going forward

Yeah, I bet we all saw this coming, huh.

So, given tungl dot hell(tm)'s new deal with midjourney, I think pretty much all artists on tumblr are, well, not having a great time. Like deviantart, tumblr has provided a way to opt out from having your blog content scraped, but like deviantart, it's a little unclear what has already been shared before the opt-out went into place, and how much they'll actually work to stop machine trawlers from trawling opted-out blogs.

I'll put the tl;dr up front:

King of Shades will not be leaving Tumblr, but due to the new policy, I won't be posting full pages here anymore.

There's no point in taking down all the pages I've already posted. Deleting them from my page won't delete subsequent reblogs, and there's a pretty high chance that tumblr has already scraped them. (haveibeentrained.com seems to think I haven't been yet, at least. I don't think I really have a big enough following for that to happen, although I don't want to jinx it...) But I certainly won't be posting the full-size pages here anymore.

Instead, I think I'll go the Trying Human route and post a little preview of the update (possibly heavily watermarked; my computer can't run glaze/nightshade, unfortunately), so you guys will still get notifications, but you'll have to visit the ComicFury main website in order to read it. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience (although I will say that I think it's a much better reading experience over there)!

Speaking of which:

I have never and will never ask for any kind of compensation (other than your wonderful feedback, which I've just been absolutely blown away by) for doing this. Even putting legality aside, that's not why I'm here! However, if you've enjoyed this comic, ever thought that you might be willing to tip me on ko-fi if I had one, or even just want to continue having an internet that isn't entirely a corporate wasteland, I ask that you consider donating to ComicFury instead.

ComicFury is a relic of the old, good internet: it's been around for at least 15 years, and it's all hosted and managed by one guy (Kyo). Aside from his team of volunteer moderators, everything on this website is done by one person with a passion for supporting artists. I've chatted with him a little, and he's a great dude! Most of his operating costs are paid for out of pocket, and the site is currently hurting a little bit because it doesn't run ads, it doesn't have subscriptions or paywalled content, it doesn't have any corporate interference or monetization of any kind outside of his Patreon. And—perhaps most relevantly for this post:

I will cut right to the chase, we have decided not to allow AI-art based webcomics on the site. [...] As for our reasoning, there are obviously ethical concerns regarding the source images of most commonly used AI image generators (namely them just being scraped off the internet without anyones permission). But even beyond that, another concern is that due to the extremely low effort involved, webcomics of this nature could just over time completely drown out in numbers art by passionate people who put a lot of time into it , which would be a real shame. So we asked ourselves what would be better for the community, and we agreed that banning it would probably be the better thing overall.

—Kyo has been quite firm that he will not allow AI art to be posted to or scraped from any ComicFury domain. While this isn't a protection against huge web trawls or people putting someone's art in individually—there's not a lot anyone can do about that yet, even with tools like glaze and nightshade—it's a little peace of mind that the art posted there won't abruptly be sold en masse to the highest bidder.

The Patreon starts at $2/month, and Kyo has said that he doesn't mind people pledging for a short time and then dipping if they can't afford an ongoing subscription. If and only if this is something you can afford, and you want to continue seeing independent webcomics including King of Shades, please consider donating!

There's not much in the way of reward tiers, especially if you're not a member, but I posit that the real reward is being able to read free webcomics done by real humans as labors of love, without being advertised to or sold as the product. I offer quite a large variety of things but if its not on the list please do not ask. The list is made for both your and my convenience.

These are fully rendered (shaded) and have additional details to polish them.

You may not print, sell, or produce any merchandise with my art regardless of if its intended for personal use.

Some Cute Drawings And an Update

Backgrounds

I have recently changed my tune about backgrounds. If you would like a background, let me know and i will tell you if i think im up to it. Complex backgrounds are a fee of +%50 as they take a lot of time. If you have multiple characters, the background price is calculated AFTER the price of the additional characters. It is up to me to decide what a complex background is.

Simple/abstract backgrounds remain free of charge. If i think a work would benefit from it, i will put a solid or swirly colored shape behind it and send you a version with and without the background so you can decide which you like better. You may request a basic background on your own.

TOS:

I retain the right to post your completed piece to any of my social medias to use as an example of my work and a testament to my reliability. I will credit you when I do.

All payments are non-refundable unless for some reason i am unable to finish your piece, or we get part way through the process and i feel that i am unable to do your character(s) justice.

You MAY:

Post your completed piece wherever you please WITH appropriate credit by either linking my page or simply stating my name and platform.

edit my art in regards to cropping for profile pictures, adding an overlay to fit a theme, and resizing to fit a platform better

You may NOT:

feed my hard work to ai

use it for anything NFT related

claim it as your own

remove my watermarks

use it commercially

What is the process?

It's pretty simple! Send me a dm with a photo of your character(s) and tell me what you'd like. Let me know if you need a few days to get the money, or if there's a time constraint (like if the piece is a birthday or holiday gift). If you don't have an idea for a pose, please include a brief description of their personality. If there's characters interacting, let me know their relationship to one another and their dynamic.

I will respond with a price and if you're ok with proceeding I will mock up a vague sketch so you can get an idea of what it would look like. This will be watermarked and it will not even be very recognizable as your character. That's because I have been scammed and ghosted in the past, even with a very rough and watermarked sketch.

After that you will send 100% of the payment in order for me to proceed. Please note that PayPal takes a cut of the money in taxes when you send it as a buisness purchase. Be kind and send a little extra so that i actually receive full payment for the commission.

I work on a first come first serve basis, but i may work on a piece while waiting for approval on another. I will let you know if there is someone ahead of you. Once payment is received i will message you frequently with updates and for approval. Once lineart is finalized, i will update less often in order to creater a better final reveal. Your final piece will already be glazed to fight against ai stealing my style.

Depending on my life circumstances, this whole process could take from 1-3 days up to a month. The later is very unlikely, and i will message you with updates if i feel i am taking too long.

The price of an "Additional Character" will depend on which tier you want me to draw them. The maximum amount of characters is 3.

The fee for meeting a deadline depends on how close the deadline is. The sooner the deadline, the more expensive it is. Price may range from 5$-10$.

1. Always credit the design I did. TH is KyraTheShadowMonarch 2. You can make whatever changes you need to a design. Of course, I would prefer if some of the base design was still recognizable, since it makes no sense to completely change an adopt. 3. I do have the right to refuse to allow you to commission me or buy an adopt. 4. Out of respect, I ask you not to resell adopts and customs for more than you've spent on them. For example, if you buy an adopt from me for $10 and then spend $8 on commissions, I ask the max you resell it for is $18. I know I can't stop people from this, but it feels disrespectful to me to see an adopt being resold for more than it's worth. 5. There are no refunds for adopts. Once bought, it's bought and I apologize if you later decide if you do not like the design, but the sale is final. If you act disrespectful to me or anyone who got an adopt instead of you, you will be blacklisted and potentially blocked. I will not revoke designs done by me if rules are broken, as it's unfair to do that, but it will make me more wary about selling designs to you in the future.

Full payment will be taken after an initial rough sketch of the art is completed and approved.

WIP images will be send throughout the process.

An image of a character’s base colors is required.

Versions with and without the watermark will be provided. The version without the watermark is intended for personal use such as TTRPG campaigns and should not be posted online.

You are free to edit the finished work as you please, so long as the edited version is not posted online.

Upon completion please provide an email I can send the finished file to.

If images of a character are not provided I will charge a $10 design fee.

I do not accept crypto and using my art for NFTs is strictly against my terms.

If you intend to use my art for commercial purposes I must be informed and will charge extra. This price will be discussed depending on what is being requested.

For IAP’s $5 and under, I’ll do sketches and some general coloring

For IAP’s that cost around $10-$15 dollars (CAD), I’ll do sketches, lineart, and clean flat color, maybe with some light shading.

For the more expensive IAP’s, $20 and up, I’ll do everything listed above, except the piece will be properly rendered.

Right now, I’m looking for the season of Nesting’s pass, any other cosmetics are secondary to the pass right now. Candle packs are always useful

I’ll provide a list of the purchased cosmetics I have already in the updated post so there’s no hassle of trying to figure that kind of stuff out

As I’m drawing the commission, I’ll provide progress screenshots, watermarked. As soon is the piece is done, I’ll provide a watermarked copy of the image for your approval, and then release the full, un-watermarked version once the item, pass, or candle pack has been exchanged.

I’ll need a screenshot of the outfit you’d like me to draw, and a pose if possible. If you don’t have a pose reference, that’s okay, but I need an outfit - or at the very least, screenshots of the items you’d like drawn.
