some thoughts on wonder woman #3
I've seen some speculation about whether the reveal that Emelie (the Amazon that started the conflict by attacking some men, resulting in their deaths -motives and reasons unknown) is pregnant, timed just right to insinuate that Diana's future daughter is Emelie's biological child, might be a fakeout.
it's just issue number 3 and I get the impression that King likes a long build-up, so it's very possible. I'd prefer if it wasn't, because the only thing I like even less than the fact that they made Diana a mother (WHY CAN'T US CHILDFREE WOMEN HAVE THIS ONE (1) THING), is the idea of Diana going through a pregnancy LOL (AFAIC Diana doesn't even have a functioning womb, okay??).
but just as I was thinking about this, and specifically about how Emelie's pregnancy could be the result of some reproductive of horror (non-consensual experimentation etc.), I had the idea... what if Emelie is pregnant, but the child is, biologically speaking, DIana's? as in, created using her DNA, somehow? (probably alongside the DNA of one of the awful men that play the part of antagonists in this arc...).
especially looking at this panel, with the sovereign's voiceover to Lizzie:
Tumblr media
there's just... something so smug, about how he speaks about this, and how he speaks to Lizzie in general that raises my alarm on this front, ngl. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility here.
especially because the fact that Diana's daughter's whole existence is about the Supersons, so far (insert eyeroll here). so I do think that, for symmetry, they'd want her to be a biological child, to get a biological legacy trinity (insert another eyeroll). this theory would explain how they'd get there without having to deal with a pregnancy for Diana's character.

hello (one of the) resident phannie data analyst(s) here with some parasocial stats on dnp’s movie tastes! following: distribution of dan and phil's ratings overall, movies they each rated 5 stars, their lowest-rated movies, and the similarities + differences in their tastes
(lore moment: yes i am a data analyst in my real job. yes i surprised myself with wanting to do this in my spare time. but then i remembered when we read dracula in college (yes i was an english major) and i graphed like, how many times dracula was referred to as vampire versus monster or something. so i shouldn’t be surprised.
first up, their overall rating patterns and by ~special status~ (i.e., wall-e, kill bill, avatar, lmao, plus big hero 6 for the fun of it)
dan’s rated 304 movies and phil’s rated 305. both of them have mean and median ratings of 4 with min 1 and max 5.
both rated kill bill vols. 1 and 2 a 5. wall-e got a 4.5 from dan and a 4 from phil (phake phans). both gave avatar a 3.5. and big hero 6 3.5 (dan) and 4.5 (phil)
rating distribution:
Tumblr media
i did analyses here by genre but i need to fix the output (i’m writing all of these based on the markdown document from my phone on the subway, but i need to fix the outputs and i don’t have my computer. so those are pending but there are other genre analyses that i could do & haven’t yet!)

Hi there! I was wondering if you had a rec list of good comics to read for someone just starting to get into Supergirl comics. Thank you!
to start off, I will always recommend reading supergirl (1982) in its entirety. it’s self-contained so you don’t have to have any background knowledge of kara and her history to read it and it’s only 23 issues long. it really captures the essence of who kara was in pre-crisis continuity and it’s definitely my favorite characterization of her! in particular, i really like the first arc that spans the first three issues :)
supergirl (2011) is also really great all the way through—with some exceptions. her costume sucks and there are some annoying crossovers, but i really love how she’s characterized and there are a lot of interesting arcs. whenever people say that they wish someone would write a supergirl story that focuses on her trauma and doesn’t make her into a carbon copy of clark, i just want to hold up supergirl vol 6 and wave it around.
now for some individual storylines/arcs i’d recommend:
superman/supergirl: maelstrom
superman: brainiac
supergirl (2005) #54-57 (”bizzarogirl”)
supergirl (2005) #58-59 (”day of the dollmaker”)
supergirl (2005) #60-64 (”good looking corpse”)
supergirl (2016) #19 (”plain sight”)
future state: kara zor el, superwoman
supergirl: woman of tomorrow
if you’d like something more in depth and specific to a certain era, i have reading guides on here for kara’s comics in pre crisis, post crisis, and rebirth! just search my reading guide tag :)
i also made a list of my favorite supergirl stories for her 64th anniversary on my personal blog here!

So you want to know more about Big Barda
Tumblr media
As Tumblr's resident expert on all things Barda, and as Kelly Thompson's Birds of Prey run brings far more attention to the character, I figured it was high time someone stepped in and gave the tumblr world a primer on DC's biggest and boldest heroine.
The Basics:
Introduced in Mister Miracle #4 by Jack Kirby, Big Barda was once the leader of Apokolips' premier death squad, the Female Furies. Trained from birth for a life of violence by Granny Goodness, Barda spent the first 250 years of her life as a living weapon. This all changed when she met Scott Free, a gentle Parademon-in-training with a mysterious past and a knack for escapes. Eventually, she and Scott both escaped to Earth, where they fell in love with both the Earth and each other. She's a lover, she's a fighter, she's a Pokémon card expert, but most of all, SHE BIG.
Barda's signature defining attribute is her raw strength. Her raw muscle allows her to keep up with heavy hitters like Wonder Woman. This isn't to suggest that she's a simple-minded brute, however-- Barda has centuries of military experience under her belt as leader of the Female Furies. She's mastered multiple weapons, including spears, swords, and her signature Mega-Rod.
Below are some reading recommendations for anyone interested in Big Barda:
Essential Runs:
Mister Miracle Vol. 1 #4-18 by Jack Kirby (1971-1974)
This was the run that introduced the world to Big Barda, as well as the Female Furies. If you want to know the basics of Barda, there's no better place to start. This run is collected in a trade, as well as a part in The Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 1.
(NOTE: Even though Barda doesn't appear until issue #4, I suggest you start with Issue #1. It'll help you get acquainted with the rest of the mythos.)
Justice League International #14-24 by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis (1988-1989)
Big Barda was on the JLI! She plays off the other characters as well as ever, and a lot of what's great about her in Jack Kirby's original run is still here! Definitely check this one out if you want to see her in another team setting. This has been collected in this omnibus.
(NOTE: Once again, I recommend you start from issue #1.)
Popular Runs:
Mister Miracle Vol. 4 #1-12 by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (2017-2018)
Yeah, I know.
Listen, Tom King is a writer with... idiosyncrasies to put it nicely. The characters in the periphery of his stories tend to act really out of character, and his dialogue can be clunky at times. That being said, The Scott/Barda dynamic in this book is excellent, and this book has some of the best art that the Fourth World has seen since the 80s. The series has been collected in a trade.
(NOTE: Did you know that the CIA has over 2003 files on Tom King? Look up "Tom King CIA 2003" for more info!)
Mister Miracle: The Great Escape by Varian Johnson and Daniel Isles (2022)
If you're at all interested in the idea of a Young Adult reimagining of Mister Miracle and Big Barda's origin story with an all-black cast, this book was made for you. It's a bit heavy on the YA tropes, but the Scott/Barda dynamic is really solid. It was released as a standalone graphic novel.
Birds of Prey Vol. 5 #1-??? by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero (2023-)
Admit it, this is the reason you're here. The Cassandra Cain & Big Barda is so instantly iconic, I'm surprised no writer has paired them up sooner. It also helps that this book has the single best Barda look since Jack Kirby's original run. Plus, she gets to throw down with Wonder Woman! What's not to love? This run is still ongoing, but the first 6 issues should be getting a trade pretty soon.
(NOTE: I started writing this before BOP #8 dropped, I had no idea about that thing that happens in the newest issue.)
Stories to Avoid:
Action Comics #592-593 by John Byrne (1987)
This is not a comic book-- it's an infohazard designed to cause pain and suffering to anyone who knows of its existence. Its premise is vile and disrespectful on the surface, and it becomes more insidious when you learn the context of its creation. This pair of issues is profoundly evil, rivaling even Avengers #200 in terms of loathsomeness.
For those who dare to investigate this, Content Warnings for rape, mind control, and human trafficking.
Anyway, let's end on something a bit lighter, shall we?
Remember that Mister Miracle YA graphic novel I mentioned earlier? Barda is getting a graphic novel of her own this summer! It's not out at the time of writing, but the preview pages look promising!
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed that introduction to one of my favorite superheroes ever. Please get back to me on this, I have no one else to talk to about Fourth World stuff.

Third person POV:
Y/n loved the smell of this little bookstore she visited every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the smell of coffee wafting past her as she sat under the magnificent cherry blossom tree with her new book of the week. This same tree that had sheltered her in rain and covered her in petals while she was just a student and new to the country and even now as an adult.
And when she abandons her beloved tree, he knows it is not for long. She will be back with a fresh tea and a pastry, and for him a brand new poem. So, he watches her go.
“She is heading back into the bookstore, boss. I really got to tell you I do not think there is any reason to be watching her.” “It will dawn on you all the longer you watch her.” “I’ve been watching her for 6 months, she’s beautiful but what’s with the obsession.” “Just wait.”
“Y/n you know most kids your age go out drinking and drink coffee more than anything else, and why you insist on looking after that rickety old tree I don’t understand.” “Aunty, you know I grew up reading books back home, every second I had away from school would be spent reading. I love it. It’s an escape that I need. And so, when I moved to Korea and found this place and that beautiful tree, and when I saw that you sold the rooibos we sell back home, well I fell in love. This became my escape. And that tree became my friend. The hominess of this place makes me feel almost at home, like my soul is home.”
And after she returns to the tree with a poem and tea, she sits quietly, pondering a thing or two…
“Hey, I like rooibos tea too” “You know Innie, you suck at stealth” “Where’d you two come from?” “Oh, nowhere really” “You are so dumb” “I HEARD THAT YOU DOG”
“Are you guys ok?” “We’re fine.” “Just here to enjoy the scenery.” Oh, then sure sit with me. You want my tea?” “Yes please.” “Seung, you can’t just take her tea.”
And in silence the girl read poetry to the tree while the two mysterious boys watched. And when she stopped she announced her resignation.
“We should walk you home.” “Yes, a woman should never be alone at night.”
“Say what is your command captain?” “Okay, you’re sweet. Follow me boys.”
They walked for a while, deciding outside of a convenience store that late night snacks and soju would be an amazing idea.
A little further up the road they got to a tiny but cosy loft apartment, briming with greenery and books. Simple and earthy. That is what y/n is. That is why all this fuss about her existed, they got it now. They knew now, tonight they would see the way they needed her.
She went to put her TV on. Some show about a mother and daughter who drank loads of coffee came on, she insisted that Gilmore Girls was the basics of comfort shows. They decided that she was right, because this was her and she would be right in anything she declared to them. 2 bottles of soju later and she was gone, of course Innie and Seung only had like 2 shots each. So, while Seung was getting her settled in and comfortable Innie called the boss.
“Oh yes tell that pretty boy Jisung m with her right now. She is so beautiful when she is asleep, wonder what her lips feel like… who knows? Oh well, we will be staying over here to look after her and clean up. Y’all can meet her tomorrow. But God hyung, you were right about her.”

It's about change and choices and second chances
Quote source:
and what kind of coward is it who'd face certain death without hesitation? One who knows it's easier to die than to change. - batman 606
Do you hate your life so much you would not change it? - Wonder Woman 74

It had no choice. I did. I could choose kindness and compassion. I could choose to be human - Azrael: Agent of the Bat #21

Spoilers for comics in April!
These are from the official solicits for that month, which you can see in full at Adventures In Poor Taste.

This in particular sucks if a boomerang is your weapon of choice, and your name is Captain Boomerang. So, to survive you join up with some allies. But be careful who you join with, because nobody is to be trusted, and your allies just might be worse than your enemies. Presenting the most brain-bending, backstabbing, boomeranging-est episode yet of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League! Each print issue includes a redeemable code for a bonus weapon doll digital token in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League inspired by the comics. Get the new Mad Hatter weapon doll digital token with issue #4. Ah Digger, never change.
This next book reprints some Webtoons strips, which has a new Mirror Master.

YOUNG Art by NICO BASCUÑÁN, JAVIER RODRÍGUEZ VÉJARES, and SEBASTIÁN FRANCHINI Cover by VASCO GEORGIEV $14.99 US | 208 pages | Softcover | 6″ x 9″ | ISBN: 978-1-77952-689-2 ON SALE 7/2/24 Jason Todd, Bizarro, and Artemis know what it means to play second fiddle to the Justice League…but now, that is even more the case as they’ve been contracted into work-for-hire duty by none other than Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. All aboard the Watchtower as the new Outlaws tackle a meddling Medusa and take a trip to the Mirror Dimension to face Mirror Master himself (along with some other Bizarro versions of our great trio). Can the Outlaws handle the twisted reflections of themselves? Or will they succumb to pressure from all (literal) angles?! Collecting episodes 12-22 of WEBTOON’s smash-hit series, optimized for a brand-new reading experience in print. Your new favorite series continues!
And we're finally getting a William Messner-Loebs Omnibus! For those not familiar with it, this (partially) covers the run which introduced Hartley's reform and coming out. However, this particular volume won't contain the coming out issue; that'll probably be in the next one.

My recommendation of Romance Club’s stories for wlw💓 Based on how well the author handled female LIs & their screentime.
• 3 female LIs: Soulless (2 GOC & 1 woman), The One vol.1 & 2 (Vol.2 has 1 GOC & 2 women), Theodora (I really love the MC of this story), Love, Sin and Evil and Heart of Trespia (I dropped this book but I already got 5 people told me that Vanora's route is really good).
• 2 female LIs: W: Time Catcher (1 GOC & 1 amazing mature woman), Vying for Versailles (This one also has amazing branching) and Path of the Valkyrie.
• 1 female LI: Kali: Call of Darkness (Lima - I highly recommend her route), Kali: Flame of Samsara (Saraswati), Arcanum (Mary) and Heaven's Secret 1 (Mimi).
Ps. Heaven's Secret: Requiem has a wonderful start of the first 2 ep that has a CG of female LI in the 1st update which is really rare in RC.
Bonus: my top 6 LIs 💕
