"As black America approaches the 21st century, our capacity or our failure to build a solid bridge . . . of works will determine whether millions of young blacks already with us or yet unborn will cross over into the new century, or fall into the abyss."
Another name you almost certainly didn't know: M. (Moses) Carl Holman, civil rights activist, writer, and poet. Born in 1919 St. Louis, Holman showed an early gift for writing, and at the age of 19 won a scriptwriting award from a popular syndicated radio program. He graduated magna cum laude from Lincoln University and went on to acquire Master's degrees from the University of Chicago and from Yale. While at Yale he published his first collection of poems, and began regularly writing articles for various newspapers and magazines on income inequity, urban poverty, literacy, and other issues important to Black Americans. In 1962 he taught English at Clark College in Atlanta, giving him a front-row seat to key events in the earliest days of the civil rights movement. As some of his students participated in sit-ins and the Freedom Rides, he found himself appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, of which he eventually became deputy director in 1966.
In 1968 Ebony magazine named Holman as one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans. That same year Holman published what is probably his best-known work: The Baptizin', a play which won first prize in the National Community Theater Festival. In addition to multiple collections of poems, Holman also published a definitive overview of the civil rights movement in the U.S., from 1965 to 1975.
Perhaps most significantly, in 1971 Holman was named Vice President of the National Urban Coalition. This organization had re-formed in 1967 in the wake of the so-called "long, hot summer" of racial strife and injustices. During this time Holman's singular talent for delivering quiet and polite, but still powerful, speeches came to the fore and he jumpstarted a great many local housing, education, job training, and economic development programs aimed at disadvantaged Black and Hispanic communities.
In his later years Holman forcefully addressed the issue of "dual literacy" for Black children --emphasizing that such students not only needed to be well-versed not only in the fundamentals such as reading, writing, and public speaking; but also in math, science, and technology. His 1988 obituary notes that Holman "had an uncanny ability to form a coalition out of the most diverse elements, and it was often said that the key to his ability to do this was the fact that he never appeared to have an agenda for himself."
(Teachers: Need some resources to engage your students this Black History Month? I'll send you a pile of these trading cards, no cost, no obligation. Just give me a mailing address and let me know how many students in your class. No strings attached, no censorship, no secret-relaying-of-names to Abbott or DeSantis or HuckaSanders.)

Tom Hiddleston was given a royal assignment on Thursday evening. An ambassador for the Prince's Trust, the Loki actor, 43, attended the charity's Invest in Futures event, where he relayed a poignant message written by King Charles.
"I really am so pleased that The Trust's work continues to go from strength to strength, having, in recent years, expanded from its mission in the United Kingdom to now supporting young people in twenty-three countries," read Tom.
Tumblr media
"Celebrating the global impact of this work is an achievement which, I must confess, I could not have dreamed of back in 1976 when I started The Trust, using, at that time, my Royal Navy severance pay when I left the Service to help disadvantaged young people achieve their full potential.
"I am thrilled to say that it has now worked with over one million young people, helping them to start careers, launch businesses and re-engage with education. I am enormously inspired by the determination and commitment of young people, one of whom you will hear from later. They are changemakers; they will shape the world's future and we must support them to realise their dreams."
A momentous occasion for the Prince's Trust, the annual Invest in Futures gala is the charity's principal fundraising event, and this year it was held at The Peninsula London in Belgravia. While King Charles has historically attended the annual event, this year, his letter proved extremely powerful, conveying the importance of the charity's work.
A star-studded affair, Tom was accompanied by his fiancée Zawe Ashton for the festivities. Posing for photos together, the loved-up couple held hands and stared into each other's eyes. HELLO! even spotted lady in red Zawe telling Tom how "gorgeous" he looked in his tux.
Rounding out the guest list, Prince's Trust ambassadors Joseph Fiennes, Jeremy Irons, Naomie Harris, Major Tim Peake, Luke Evans and Myleene Klass were also in attendance.
Meanwhile, musical duo Rod Stewart and Jools Holland provided the entertainment, performing songs from their newly launched album Swing Fever, before handing the baton to DJ Cuppy.
Tumblr media
It's been a royally busy week for A-lister Tom. Just 24 hours before the letter reading, the actor had been photographed meeting with Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace. Attending a reception for the BBC's 500 Words Finalists on Wednesday, Tom appeared engrossed in conversation, enjoying a laugh or two with Camilla, and music star Olivia Dean.

Ask Game: Manuel brutally but accidentally kills All For One for good.
You have clocked my niche perfectly
1- "how the heck does that happen" well, during the Hosu chaos when it's all going very badly, another hero (mostly underestimating how much an asset Manual the Water Guy is at fighting fires) tells him to focus on finding his student and getting Izuku evacuated. Obviously Izuku will not evacuate, but he will get Manual to Tenya faster. So now there's two teenagers and the most chill pro hero in an alleyway fighting Stain, while Tomura and Kurogiri watch. And Tomura "fan of heroes with no merch" either recognizes Manual and knows he doesn't want to risk an actual pro ruining his fun with Stain, or doesn't recognize him and finds that even more suspicious as he has no clue what power level this npc is at. So while Manuel is trying to first aid Tenya and Native (oh yeah I guess there's a second pro in the alley too lol) while Izuku keeps Stain occupied and gets backup, he's also trying to figure out the Nomu thing. And then kurogiri appears, and Tenya yells because he recognizes him, but he can't move to shove Manual out of the way of the warp.
2- Manual is dropped in a very spooky lab with more nomu and some faceless creep on a throne. Manual does not judge the faceless thing, whatever some people look different. He does, however, Judge His Vibe. This guy clocked murderous intent from a teenager he barely saw on tv before it even happened, he Just Knows this guy is bad news. And in charge of the LoV, clearly, since Shigaraki didn't make sense as a leader and Stain just seemed mad about it. But Manual is also careful, and does not act on his vibe checks without further investigation. So he asks the suited creep "oh my god, are you the one that made the Nomu? Like the villain factory five years ago?" And AfO is just so pleased to be recognized as such a threat and confirms this, wondering what quirk he's about to steal from Manual.
And then Manual uses his quirk, and well, there's a lot of water in the Nomu labs. In the Nomu tanks. Running through the building, through AfO's medical equipment.
A lot of water.
3- Without the life-support equipment and half drowned, it is really really easy for Manual to hit him on the back of the head with a broken bit of pipe. This was not supposed to kill him- Manual saw a shape moving and thought it would not do much against a nomu, plus AfO is supposed to have a million quirks but- ah well. He's super dead now. And Manual is also surrounded by half finished nomu, also fairly dead now. And he's got to find the exit.
4- when Manual radios in that he's been warped under the Jakku hospital during the league attack in Hosu and he needs hero backup, now, he didn't expect all the backup he'd get. But all the heroes in Jakku were watching the news in Hosu and feeling useless, so they rush over and well. There's not much for them to do but cleanup nomu stuff and file reports. Manual appreciates the support anyway. And the blanket a nurse got him, and a coffee. And that everyone lets him focus on updates from Hosu, almost dropping his phone in relief that Stain has been taken in and the three -why are there three? There were two when he left!- teenagers are fine. The heroes offer to get him a ride to Hosu asap, but Manual stands up, pauses, and goes "wait, what about the mole? AfO had to have people working for him in this hospital to keep a lab like that under cover, right?"
5- with that terrifying thought, the Jakku heroes rush him out faster so they can figure that out, and Manual is on a train to Hosu. Once he gets closer to the city and two train switches later, he finds himself alone in the car with a tall, thin blond man. He knows the guy has to have some hero connection, because they were literally the only two people allowed on this train right now but he does not expect the guy to take a phone call, anxiously ask about a kid, get cut off, start swearing profusely in English, and then repeat "All For One? Are you sure????" about a dozen times before demanding around the clock watch until he can get there, and hanging up. The guy goes "Manual, huh?"
Manual looks up and answers, thinking he's being addressed, and the blond guy realizes it's him, and suddenly he's All Might and All Might is thanking Manual, bowing low. And that's just too much for Manual after the stressful week he's had. He passes out.

Pairing:Husband!Chris Evans x Kardashian!Reader
Word count: 1.5k
Summary: After keeping their life for the most part quiet, Y/n and Chris agree to give a statement to the Hollywood press (Article Style with an interview)
Warnings: none really
- Requests are open!
Likes, Comments and Re-blogs are appreciated♥️
My Main masterlist: Welcome to the Fae Station✨
Chris Evans Masterlist: Library of Chris Evans 💫
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
Hollywood Press: Y/N KARDASHIAN MAKES A STATEMENT
Y/n Kardashian-Evans, the first of the Kardashian siblings to change her surname, causing an earthquake to erupt within the hollywood life.
After getting wedded to her long term boyfriend Chris Evans, the couple didn’t wait long before bringing two new additions to the family. Lily and Noah Kardashian-Evans.
Y/n has always been known to keep out of the spotlight as much as possible, even during the filming of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the youngest usually didn’t make many appearances.
After meeting at a mutual friend’s party, Chris said he simply could not keep his eyes off the Kardashian and just had to get to know her. Which then has led onto them dating for 3 years and now being married for 3.
One thing that has been out in the public is her passion for art, one that definitely wasn’t hidden by her mother Kris Jenner. Who revealed that her youngest daughter had been accepted into art school years ago, and was now working for a major publishing company as an illustrator for children's books.
Going back to 2019, Chris and Y/n's wedding was one you just had to be at to witness. Taking place on a lovely island off the coast of Greece, in a lovely town filled with historical monuments which symbolised their love for history and travel.
Adorning a lovely corset wedding dress, the famous Kardashian met her groom at the aisle, tears in both of their eyes as they exchanged vows and rings.
Their wedding ceremony however was quite unique, in that it took place at around 7pm allowing for the sun to set by the time they were wed.
Their reception was outdoors allowing the moon to shine down, the trees surrounding the venue were decorated with fairy lights or small fire torches, a very nature theme becoming apparent. The couple having a secret last dance was revealed as Y/n posted pictures of them embracing as they swayed to music, the sea and the moon shining behind them.
After that major event the couple went off the grid per say, with Y/n only revealing new books she had illustrated or Chris revealing his new projects he would be taking on.
The next thing we knew was that Y/n Kardashian Evans had relocated permanently to Chris' home state, now owning a large enough countryside house in Boston. She is the first to leave the comfort of having her family close by, although she says it was, “For the Best”
Keeping a low profile in Boston, the couple seemed to be basking in their newlywed stage, with photos being posted from their honeymoon in the alps in Switzerland, a classy choice.
Both wearing ski attire, the couple announced they would be expecting in early 2020, not giving much information as to how far along Y/n was .
That photo alone amassed over 30 million likes, capturing the hearts and eyes of people around the globe wit the caption: “New developments in progress 🍼” Holding a pair of baby skis between them
Surely enough in March of 2020, Chris Evans had posted on instagram the photo of Y/n holding two bundles of joy as she lay in her hospital bed, a beautiful yet tired smile on her face, with the caption: “My beautiful wife and kids♥️” The world going into shock at the sight of the twins.
Many of the Kardashian and Evans family rushed to announce their support under the post, with the likes of Scott Evans and Kim Kardashian reposting it onto their story, welcoming the new arrivals.
Their names were then revealed two weeks later to be, Lily and Noah, names the couple apparently had been set on since they found out about the twins.
Unfortunately for us, the lives of the family would once again go off the grid as the world went into lockdown because of the Coronavirus.
With minimal updates, and the only source of press coming from rare stories off Chris Evans' Instagram of the children walking with his wife or them at their pool, the life of the Kardashian-Evans still remains for the most part a mystery.
However, now with life returning back to normal slowly, there have been pictures of the couple bringing their children to the beach or even to LA where we saw Kris Jenner post about looking after her grandbabies.
Leading us to then know that Chris and Y/n had taken a well deserved break to go to Peru, a unique yet amazing choice as they went to see the likes of Machu Picchu.
Now in August of 2022, we had the pleasure of interviewing the couple off camera as they came to our studio, with the well awaited questions I’m sure you all had.
Here Is The Transcript! :
Interviewer: So Y/n and Chris it’s absolutely amazing to see you both here, I must say you both look great!
Y/n: Thank you so much! It feels weird to be in a studio again
Chris: I’m glad to finally address some questions now that we’re finally settled back into normal life
Interviewer: So first off, how are your children doing. Has covid affected them at all? And how was life with two young children at home 24/7
Y/n: Honey do you wanna answer this one?
Chris: Of course, life was definitely chaotic to say the least. Learning how to act as parents to not one but two, all whilst a pandemic was going on was difficult. Overall their development hasn’t been affected as they still don’t attend school anyway, although when they finally became aware of the world around them it was hard to explain the idea of a virus and why we had to be so careful
Interviewer: Now, is there any plans of any new additions any time soon?
Y/n: Uhh we’ll see, it’s not off the table for now
Chris: Just wait i’ll have another Evans for ya within a year
Y/n: Oh stop it babe!
Interviewer: Have they had the chance to meet the family back in LA?
Y/n: Oh yes, my mom actually came to Boston to be in the delivery room with Chris and I. Then for my sisters, they had flown over when restrictions were loosened to stay for a while for a visit.
Interviewer: Do your children know what you do for work? Or are you still just their mom and dad to them?
Chris: Well they know that I fought monsters for a living? They still can’t grasp the idea of acting as a job so we settled on that. As for Y/n most of the books we got them as babies were books she had illustrated, so that was easy enough.
Interviewer: Chris do you plan on returning to new projects anytime soon?
Chris: For now i’m enjoying being a family man and basking in the domestic lifestyle, spending time with my beautiful wife and kids, being there for the their firsts. So for now i’m focusing on the likes of ASP, where I can work from home
Interviewer: Any funny stories? I know I have a few from when my children were born
Y/n: Omg I have to say this one! When I would be sleeping, obviously the babies would wake up crying in the middle of the night wanting to be breast fed. Well one night I was feeding Noah after Lily was already done, so Chris was sitting beside me on another rocking chair doing some skin to skin contact with Lily in his arms. Lily then starts suckling on Chris' nipple, and it was the funniest thing i’ve ever seen. Just seeing Chris try to pry a clearly sleepy baby off his chest
Interviewer: Well that’s definitely new!
Chris: Yeah it was something i’ll never forget
Interviewer: Now I hate to ask this, but your sister Khloe is having a second baby with Tristan Thompson through a surrogate. Reports say that Tristan has cheated a multitude of times during this pregnancy, what do you make of this?
Y/n: Usually I don’t like to comment on the situations of my family members. As many people know I tend to stay out of the spotlight as much as I can, preferring a more quiet life. I have no doubt that Khloe will be an amazing mother once again, just like she is to True. It’s up to them as parents how they deal with scenarios like this, I just hope that Tristan has the wellbeing of his kids in mind. I know my sister is strong, no doubt she will get through this, it’s just unfortunate
Chris: Yeah listen, I love Khloe, she’s like a sister to me and we are here for her no matter what; for her, True and her new baby.
Interviewer: Well folks, that’s all for today! I can’t thank you enough for coming in! Good luck with everything
Chris: No thank you so much! You’ll be the first to know when i’ve gotten my newest Evans haha
Y/n: He isn’t joking by the way, he will let you know haha, but seriously thank you for today!

I quite liked this format ☺️

You had this coming. Worst 5 Chenford Episodes of the Rookie. Tim and Lucy must interact. You reap what you sow 😈
And then to give you even more to procrastinate with—
5 missed opportunities that you wish the show would have done more with
Okay, let's dive into this.
My opinion on worst episodes is similar to yours - these episodes feel like a departure from the characters and from the development of their relationship, etc.
Hit and Run (4x08) - I do not like this episode for Chenford (and in general tbh). GENNY: When you were 7 years old, he dropped you in Griffith Park with a compass and made you find your way home. TIM: Which I did. LUCY: A Tim Test. (setting aside the overall UGH of someone doing that to a SEVEN YEAR OLD...) As if Lucy 'empathy is her superpower' Chen would make such inconsiderate comments about someone else's pain, especially Tim's?!?!??! No, no, NO. Even her conversation later with Tim where she says she's overstepping, but that his sister needs him... I get that, but Tim did not want to go back there. And the Lucy of the past and of nearly every other episode would absolutely not say that. She would respect and support Tim's choice, because it makes sense - emotionally, psychologically, etc. And if they really needed Lucy to have a conversation like that, it should have been with Genny, telling her to leave Tim alone and respect his choice. Ugh.
Mother's Day (4x21) - This makes the list out of my absolute HATRED for that fake proposal. Sure, the teasing earlier in the episode was fun, but the ending was AWFUL. There are about a million other (better) ways we could have seen Lucy having that sort of "aha" moment. Tim Bradford views marriage in high regard (again I go back to - this man was true to his vows with Isabel long after she took off), he's not going to PROPOSE as a joke. GRRRR
The Choice (5x04) - What you said, honestly. That Look™ as he's lowered down to the basement is !!!!!, but beyond that? Booooo, such an anticlimactic conclusion to this story arc. Certainly this was a byproduct of (heartbreaking) real-life circumstances, but the complete lack of closure to this arc for Lucy (and Tim) will be forever disappointing. And on top of the way it all played out, the brief exchange between them when they see Rosalind's body at the end? It's so devoid of any emotion or compassion on Tim's part (granted, we can't see his face as he says "she only seemed larger than life", but his subsequent line is all business), and it just feels so out of touch with the previous Chenford + Rosalind moments.
New Blood (3x11) - Again, big old ditto here, but yes, hated the way they portrayed Lucy as insecure and jealous of Barnes. (Seriously listen up everyone: Lucy has never ever been insecure about her appearance - nor should she be, she's a fucking babe.)
This is a tie between A.C.H. (4x05) and Long Shot (4x14) for the same reason. Both episodes have some fun moments, and are certainly not awful overall, but similar to Lucy's comments re: Tim's childhood/dad in 4x08, I hated seeing Tim spin Lucy's mom's comments/actions in a positive light ("Or she's just looking out for you, knowing how busy you are." and "Maybe she's trying to prevent you from making the same mistakes she did."). Sure, maybe he was trying to play devil's advocate or make sure Lucy was considering all her options or whatever, but it comes across as him siding with her mom. And based on how easily Lucy talks to him about this stuff, it's clear he's heard plenty about that situation in the past. Lucy's mom sucks.
Five missed opportunities, hmm, this is hard to think about on the fly...
I think it was a massive missed opportunity to have Chenford do the whole secret relationship thing (delicious) and then not have a reveal of the relationship. This show is light and fun, and there was major comedy potential there. I wish they would have explored that more. This is slightly related, so I'll lump them together - I wish we had a conversation between Tim and Angela after the reveal of Chenford to bookend the ones in 5x01 and 5x02.
Still can't believe they brought Chris back after the breakup just for lawyer stuff. I was more than happy to close the door on that character, but if they really wanted to bring him back, it felt like a missed opportunity to not have some interaction with Chenford and real closure to that arc.
The Emmett of the it all - I've been chatting with @goodgirlssayiloveyoutoo (Go read her fics! Do it now!) about this recently, and it's honestly such a bummer that the actor had to leave so abruptly. There was so much potential in that relationship - he was super hot, Lucy deserved to have a love life (!!!!), and it felt like such an opportunity to propel things forward and make something happen with Chenford.
This one is silly and stupid, but after Tim called LA CLEAR in season 2, I would have loved to see Lucy or Nyla or someone set his ringtone to Lady Marmalade.
I can't believe I'm relating one of these to 5x01, because that episode is a fave, but it's a bit of a missed opportunity that Hajek's crew busted into the hotel room so early. There was only one bed. Would have loved to see how they handled that (and just having more of them undercover in general). But that's a minor one overall.
And I absolutely positively wish Tim broke up with Ashley.
Oooookay wow this post feels super duper negative... which is insane because I absolutely adore this show and CANNOT WAIT for it to be back in 4 (!!!!!!!!!) weeks!!!!!!
Omg someone ask me some positive happy questions hahaha

Partner: Part 9
It was an interesting thing, getting things arranged so that he could come visit the human in the hospital. While Prowl was looking at a considerable recovery time, it was nothing compared to what the human in the bed before him faced.
Jazz took a minute to study the human in front of him. Physically she looked…awful. The thick bandages running from her shoulders down the entire length of both arms only added to the impression of 'damaged'. But looking into her eyes Jazz could see what Prowl was saying when he spoke of her.
And spoke of her he had, often and at great length when he was conscious. He spoke of her courage and compassion, of her strength and her intelligence. He spoke too of her shortcomings, of how she was often easily frustrated, and her addiction to the human beverage known as coffee.
Jazz had actually become slightly jealous of the small organic. Three years of working side by side with Prowl, closer to him than Jazz had ever allowed himself to appear in the millions of years they had worked together. Three years where Jazz had been completely missing from the picture.
But it was that relationship that had driven her to save Prowl's life, and the price of Prowl's life was finally hitting home as ran a scan on her. He would have to be careful when he reported to Prowl of the human's condition and the doctor's predictions for her recovery.
She would never regain the full use of her hands, and there was extreme damage all the way up her arms. There was scarring in random places on her body where the energon had burned her, blemishes. And organics were subject to so many other damages as they healed, infections and re-injury.
Green eyes met blue visor, and the human spoke first. "So you are Jazz."
The mech moved closer and smiled as the human did not shrink away from his presence. "Yea, that'd be me. Which would make ya Sierra."
She smirked. "Sierra Hunter. And forgive me if I do not offer to shake your hand."
For a moment all Jazz could do was stare, mouth hanging open. Then he laughed. "Well, at least Prowl found himself someone with a sense o' humor."
"Quite possibly the only thing that saved us during our time working together." Sierra agreed, and Jazz found himself fighting down another laugh.
As they talked Jazz could see what Prowl saw in this human. He started looking closer. Could tell how the pain multiplied when she moved, and how a mere fifteen minutes later she was already fading. He signaled her caregivers, but before they arrived Jazz grew serious. "Thank you."
"For what? I should be thanking you for reminding me that there is life outside of this dungeon."
"For saving Prowl."
Sierra smiled at that. "Well I wasn't about to let my partner bleed to death."
"Not for that, though while we are on the subject, thank you for that as well."
Sierra settled back on the bed. "You're welcome, even though I am not sure if I save him, or if he rescued me. And Jazz-." She called after him, waiting until the mech turned to look at her again. "He never stopped missing you."

So an extra funny part about Darius & Willow's weird friendship re: him helping her get ready for her date, is Darius used to essentially be Harvey's boss for many years
Like it was already a little strange initially for Gilbert & Harvey that their daughter started dating the ex-Golden Guard/nephew of the deceased emperor, but one of his parents is the ex-Abomination Coven Head too??
First Willow befriended THE Blight family's youngest kid years back, and now she's dating the adoptive kid of a Coven Head, girl just keeps collecting kids related to very important figure heads her dads have worked with/for, I love that for her. Gotta be a 🤏 weird for them tho haha
I know there's a post in my drafts somewhere talking about this exact thing. Like!!! Darius was Harvey's boss!!! That's hilarious!!!!
I like the idea that Harvey and Gil were initially in the dark about Hunter and Darius's relationship. Like when Hunter started dating their daughter, they obviously wanted to invite him and his family over for dinner. (Willow had to repeatedly beg them not to be embarrassing.) So of course, Hunter brought Camila, Luz and Vee along. At this point in time, they're his set-in-stone family, while he and Darius are still kinda in this grey area.
And oh god the Parks LOVE Camila. She's a treasure. She's so sweet. She knows very little about this world so she asks them questions about themselves and their jobs and listens with rapt attention. And the Parks know little about her world so they're just as invested. And even though the food they served made Camila throw up, she took it like a champ. They got along so well.
So they're all proud of themselves for having a WONDERFUL relationship with their daughter's boyfriend's family. They're so good at being functional sociable adults. (I see Harvey as the kinda guy who gets a rush of exhilaration every time he performs adulthood correctly.)
Anyway it's not until a few months later when they're well acquainted with Hunter and their daughter's relationship with him that Willow is like. "Oh, by the way. Hunter's grouchy father figure has invited us over for dinner. He wants to meet you guys."
Which just has Harvey and Gil like "Huh???????" There's ANOTHER parent they have to form a relationship with now??????
And OH GOD. When Harvey finds out who this man is, he goes fucking BONKERS. That's the guy!!!! That's the MAIN guy!!!!! He worked for that guy!!!!!!! And though the Coven system has been abolished, I don't think Harvey can really get that image of Darius the Boss Man out of his head.
After all Harvey is a guy who's very concerned with appearances and making connections for the sake of your career. And Darius still has a huge reputation in the abomination field. So he believes it's in his family's best interest that they remain civil with him.
Like Harvey worked hard while in that Coven and he only met Darius like once or twice. So he flew relatively under the radar. Gave Darius no real reason to dislike him. It was fine.
So the idea of going to his HOUSE and having dinner with him is fucking batshit. Because now he has to make an IMPRESSION.
He panics the whole week and then on the night they're about to leave for the Deamonne residence, he's bustling around making sure He, Gilbert and Willow look presentable and insisting that they all behave themselves. A million times worse than Willow was the first time Hunter came over.
Gilbert, combing his hair: Well, how do I look, Harv? Do you think I'll impress your boyfriend Darius looking so neat and polished? :)
Harvey, straightening his collar: Oh, your sense of humor is alive and well, I see. Fantastic. Make him laugh if you can. I love you.
Willow, polishing her boots after Harvey told her they weren't shiny enough: He's not worth all this effort y'know. He might think he is but he's just some guy at the end of the day.
Harvey, meticulously trimming his beard: Please don't tell me you've ever spoken to him like that.
Willow, who would prefer not to give her dad an aneurysm right now: Of course not 💕
Anyway I absolutely see Darius as somebody who may act like he really doesn't give a shit about anybody who's not in his inner circle but at the same time, he would still be the kind of boss who goes to the effort of learning all the witches in his old Coven by name.
So when he opens up the door and warmly announces "Harvey Park! Wonderful to see you again." Harvey nearly fucking passes out from shock.
Now I KNOW, I know in my heart Willow will not obey that order to behave herself. Once she and Darius are seated at the same table, they are going at it. It is impossible not to.
Which has Harvey sweating BUCKETS at first, especially with how Gilbert barely tries to hold it in before he's in peals of laughter at their daughter's retorts. Even Hunter is snickering.
It takes him a bit to get accustomed to how this dynamic works, just like Hunter, but Harvey does eventually realize that Darius and Willow's rivalry comes from familiarity more than anything. And that's when Harvey realizes that he understands.
Because like!!! Oh!!!! It's a little bit like Harvey and Hunter.
Similarly to how Darius sees his younger self in Willow, Harvey sees his younger self in Hunter. And they're not nearly as witty and graceful as the former two, but two personalities that are so very similar sometimes leads to clashing.
Not even of the antagonistic variety. They're both just nerds who love to info dump and they've both read the same books so they're often very competitive over who can get the words out the fastest and be the one to share the Fun Fact. Like:
Harvey: And the thing about mindscapes is--
Hunter: They reflect the individual!
Harvey: I knew that, yes. I was just gonna tell them that.
Hunter: You were talking too slow so I helped :)
Harvey: Thanks, Hunter.
Hunter: No problem :)
Initially, while the two were still getting used to each other, Hunter used to be so embarrassed by his tendency to speak over Harvey. He just got nervous and blurted shit out to prove he was smart and was terrified Willow's dad wasn't gonna like him. But on the flipside, Harvey, who was initially wary of Hunter, is now like "wow he's just like me fr" And starts to encourage this playful sort of "rivalry" which Hunter is aware is just a joke. And though they DO get on each others nerves, they have an understanding.
That's it!!! That's exactly what Willow and Darius got going on!!!!!
Anyway it's nice that they get to do this and Harvey actually gets an opportunity to talk to Darius in a more casual setting so he can see him in another light that's not the Big Boss Man. Cuz Harvey is crazy smart when it comes to abomination magic, as is Darius. So they actually gel really well. But the boss-employee barrier always prevented them from actually being friends.
Also Gilbert manages to make Darius laugh several times, a feat many cannot do, so Harvey kissed him senseless after they got home. 💕

Year of the Bat - Number 21
Welcome to Year of the Bat! In honor of Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin, and Richard Moll, I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout this January. TODAY’S EPISODE QUOTE: “I’m a civic-minded citizen, with a lot of time on his hands!” Number 21 is…The Clock King.
Tumblr media
Some of the best supervillains in “Batman: The Animated Series” weren’t necessarily characters who appeared time and time again. Sometimes they only showed up a couple of times, and that was honestly enough. The Clock King, titular antagonist of this episode, is a great example. The character was actually invented as part of another superhero’s Rogues Gallery – namely Green Arrow – but ever since the version played by Walter Slezak in the 60s series, at least, he’s often been confused for a Batman rogue, as well. This episode updated the character in a way that many agree is superior to the original found in the comics, and has been influential in later portrayals to this date. The story begins with a man named Temple Fugate, a businessman whose company is under serious trouble with a multi-million dollar lawsuit against him. If he loses the court hearing, it will mean his financial ruin. Hamilton Hill, an acquaintance on Fugate’s regular railway commute, suggests that Fugate should relax before the hearing, and recommends taking his usual coffee break at a different time. Fugate decides to take the advice…and a domino effect of accidents leads to not only the destruction of his company, but the end of any shred of sanity the man has left in his head. Years later, in present day Gotham, Hill is now the Mayor of the City, and is running for a re-election. Fugate appears as the self-proclaimed “Clock King,” a villain hell-bent on humiliating and then destroying the Mayor, whom he blames for all his woes. Batman must find a way to stop Fugate, as the Clock King’s crimes grow increasingly more brazen and dangerous. What I love about the Clock King is the way the motif of time is used in the story. The original villain in earlier interpretations was a very gimmicky character; I’ve always enjoyed the character, but I think it was primarily due to this version and the one in the 60s series that I really fell in love with the concept. Clock King, in this series, isn’t so much a guy who uses clocks as a gimmick, but is instead a living clock himself. He’s the world’s most nightmarish case of OCD, who has to make sure everything is neat, tidy, punctual, and efficient at all times. Why is this a threat? Because he knows when a train will be passing by X spot at Y time, and knows how to get down off a building and onto it without breaking a sweat. Because he knows the exact spot to stand, and when to stand there, in order to avoid being crushed by falling rubble. Because he knows exactly when to dodge a punch, when to retaliate with an attack of his own; his mind is a computer that can calculate every single action and motion down to a fraction of a second. As the series so often did, in other words, it took a character who had before seemed like something of a joke, and made him into a compelling and dangerous opponent. Alan Rachins, the voice actor for the Clock King, is also a big part of the character’s staying power. He’s just so wonderfully snide, for lack of a better way of putting it; while you do feel a bit sorry for Fugate due to his opening origins, he’s also just a wonderfully smug and smarmy sort of character. You kind of want to punch him in the face, but in the best possible way, and it never takes away from his menace as a character. The design is also really great; very simple, but very striking, with the watch-face glasses and the cane that resembles a minute hand. It’s easy to see why this version of the character caught on, both in and out of comics: sometimes just knowing the right time for everything can almost be a superpower in and of itself.

Tomorrow we move into the Top 20 of the countdown! Hint: “Why couldn’t you just let me make-believe?!”

I had a story idea where jack is in a relationship with the reader biy one night he gets really drunk and sleeps with some girl and he forgets to ask for nda and her phone and she sneaks a picture of him and post on IG and there’s a big scandal going on how he’s a cheater and when he finds out he goes straight to the reader and finds the house empty well her side he knows he fucked up and the reader just disappears no one heard of her or nothing not even the reader parents she was just gone if you wanna add like years later she re appears however ending you want it 🫣
A/N: AHHH FIRST ANGST FIC LETS GOOOO, I hope y’all like 🫶
———————————————————————
You body was stiff. You couldn’t tell what you were feeling - anger, pain, disgust, disappointment. A mixture of all of them really is what you felt as you sat in your shared bed, which was currently empty and alone of your boyfriend’s presence.
“Jack Harlow caught cheating on girlfriend with random girl!” Read the headline. You wanted to cry but the tears were caught in your throat instead. You could ask a million questions as to why, who, how, but it didn’t matter anyways. He still cheated, that was the point. He cared so little about you that he went and had sex with this random girl, instead of coming home to his girlfriend of 3 years. You weren’t gonna wait around to hear shit from him. He wanted to be out all night and not come home, leave no texts or calls, and fuck some random bitch? Then you decided you wouldn’t give him the chance to ever explain himself, or try and charm his way back to your good side.
You got up and started packing your things. Pictures, clothes, shoes, toothbrush, trinkets that commemorated memories with Jack, all of it. By the time you were done, it looked like you have never even entered the apartment before. It looked empty and alone, just how Jack had left you. You opened the door to leave the apartment and looked back at it one last time. You held back a sob, your heart clenching at leaving something you once recognized as home and love, was now just an apartment.
Jack’s POV
Jack woke up in a bed he didn’t recognize, and a girl he didn’t know who was in the process of putting her clothes on. His head was throbbing at any sound and the sunlight that peeked in through the window was excruciatingly bright.
”Morning, baby.” The girl smiled at him.
“Fuck.” He thought.
“Don’t call me that, I don’t even know who you are. This was a mistake, it meant nothing.” Jack glared at her.
“Don’t try and pretend you don’t know who I am now Jack, you were moaning my name all last night.” She smirked at him, putting a heel on.
“Shut up, just leave.” He told her, the guilt eating away at him.
She frowned at him, grabbing her purse and walked out the hotel room. As the door closed behind her, she looked back at it as she waited for the elevator. She looked through her camera roll, selecting one from the previous night with Jack. “Hmm we look cute.” She smiled at the screen before posting it on instagram, with the caption “he came home cause the kids missed him 🥰”. The elevator dinged, and the doors opened as she smiled and walked in, letting the doors shut as chaos was about to arise.
Jack was about to call you when he got a mass income of texts and dms. He opened them, and his heart sank. A picture of him sleeping with his arm wrapped around the girls waist and his head nuzzled her neck as she wore a cheeky smile.
“Fuck, fuck, FUCK! How could I be so fucking stupid, the fucking NDA.” Jack groaned, hitting himself in the head. Not only did he cheat, he didn’t have the decency to keep it on the low before he told you; now it was out everywhere. He couldn’t imagine how embarrassed and angry your must’ve felt.
“Y/N-“ Jack gasped from his silent sobs. He distraughtly grabbed his phone, pressing you contact number several times, letting it ring before hearing your voicemail and then repeating the same actions.
“FUCK!” Jack yelled after several tries, knowing that he couldn’t get through to you because you had now probably seen the headlines. He wiped his face from the tears that had slipped. Jack took a deep breath before grabbing his keys and phone before heading out the door. He jumped in his car, speeding to your shared apartment as he continued to try calling you. Once he pulled up, he jumped out and sprinted to the door, his thoughts all jumbled but ready to work this out with you.
“Baby?” He called out, taking his keys out of the door. The living room looked a little bare, which confused Jack as he continued further into the apartment. He finally made his way to the bedroom and that’s when his heart officially broke. You were gone. All your clothes were gone from the dresser and the closet. Your hair and skin products gone from the bathroom. Pictures, jewelry, perfume, trinkets, any and all signs of you were gone.
“Baby, n-no.. she- it was a m-mistake..” Jack let out a broken sob as he sunk to his knees. It wasn’t until he saw the gold plated “J” necklace he had given you on your 6 month anniversary, that Jack broke down. You never took it off, never went anywhere without it, it was a token of your love - that you were Jack’s and he was yours. And now it sat here on the bed. He knew you were serious, and well within your rights to be. Jack felt he could just talk to you, explain everything, he’d be able to fix it. He called your friends, parents, anyone he knew to figure out where you went. None of them knew, or refused to tell you - which was valid.
“I’m so sorry baby, s-so so sorry, Y/N.” Jack’s voice cracked as his words floated around in the empty apartment.
4 Years Later…
Y/N POV
“Which popsicles do you want, baby?” You said as you turned into the frozen aisle with your cart.
“Orange!!” Your 3 year-old daughter cheered, and you laughed.
“Orange! I thought you wanted Cherry!” You teased her and she stuck her tongue out in response.
“Eeewwww no, mommy.” She said and you smiled at her. You opened the freezer door and grabbed the orange popsicles and tossed them in the cart. You looked down at your list before a voice brought you out of your trance.
“Y-Y/N?” His Kentucky accent shining through as ever. You froze and slowly turned around.
“Jack?” You uttered out in confusion. What the hell was he doing here, and not in KY or Atlanta?
“HIIIIII, my name’s Imani!!!” Your daughter cheerfully waved at Jack.
Jack’s eyes widened as he waved back.
“Is she- is she mi-“ he started to say before you cut him off.
“No.” You said sternly, the hurt still present from his actions from 4 years ago. You hoped he didn’t notice the way her curls were extra curly, the way her dimples dug into her cheeks, and how her laugh was just like his. She was like him in every way, which broke your heart a little to see so much of Jack in her, but she got his best qualities so you were nevertheless so in love with your little creation. You found out you were pregnant a few weeks after everything went down. At first you didn’t know what to do, your emotions all over the place because of Jack, and now the growing baby that was in you. Eventually you decided she was something that you wanted, with or without Jack. Yeah you should’ve told him, but you figured you wouldn’t see him again and it was better for the both of you to be without him.
“Look Jack, it’s good to see you, but we have to go, I’m sorry-“ you stammered, turning to push your cart with your child away from Jack.
“No wait-“ he gently put his hand on your arm.
“Even if she isn’t mine, I’d still treat her like she is. Please y/n, let’s just talk.” Jack pleaded with you.
You looked up at his blue irises that you had secretly missed so much. Tears brimmed your eyes, and you bent your head down, shaking it.
“I can’t. I can’t Jack, I’m sorry. We both did things we shouldn’t have, and defiantly didn’t handle them well. But I’ve moved on, I can’t deal with this now, I’m over it.” You exhaled.
“Shit, I can’t do this right now. I gotta go.” You turned again, turning your attention back to Imani as she had started to open snacks you hadn’t paid for and babbling at Jack even though he wasn’t paying attention - being more preoccupied with you.
You stated to walk away quickly, before he called your name again.
“Please. We don’t have to do this now, but if you ever want to, please just call or text me. Anytime y/n, I’m serious.” He said giving you a piece of paper with a new number on it. You nodded, taking it from him and shoving it in your purse.
His hand lingered on yours for a moment.
“I still love you..” he whispered. You felt the tears rushing to your eyeline again, and decided you had to get out of this, immediately.
“You should’ve thought about that when you were fucking some other girl.” You said harshly, with a twinge of pain at the end. “Goodbye, Jack.” You said before pushing reaching in the cart to pull Imani out and exiting the store, leaving all your un purchased groceries there.
Tears streamed down your face as you made your way to your car.
“Mommy ok?“ Imani softly asked, looking at you.
“Yeah baby, mommy’s okay.” You smiled at her. She leaned in and kissed you and you let out an emotional giggle, not understanding how such a perfect human came from you and Jack. You buckled her in her car seat and got in the drivers seat. You looked at your purse which had Jack’s scribbled number peeking out of it, taunting you. You shook your head as you started the car and pulled out the parking lot, confused about what steps you’d take next, if any at all, with Jack.

A Local Habitation Re-Read: Part 1
Ha ha, SO: my break was a little bit longer than I expected it to be, but I'm so excited for the next books that I decided to keep going with my re-read. Hopefully I'll keep going for more than one book this time!
As always, this is not a spoiler-free recap, and please come talk to me about stuff!
Chapter One:
Kerry and Stacy!!! We don't see Kerry very often, which is a shame, because I love it when she pops up. Hopefully she'll show up more in later books. (Also: Stacyyyyyyyyyyyyyy)
Tybalt's first appearance! And Toby's continued *flawless* understanding of her and Tybalt's relationship. I'm totally sure he's there because you're in debt to him, Toby; it doesn't have anything to do with how you almost died three or four times in the last book, or how he wants to check on you to see if you're okay.
And finally, she gets her leather jacket! I'd almost forgotten that it was Tybalt's jacket first, and then it was SUPER disorienting in the first book when she didn't have it.
Seeing how Toby's relationship progresses both with Tybalt *and* the Shadow Roads is honestly one of the most interesting parts of my re-read. It's fun seeing her go from HATING the Shadow Roads and being entirely dependent on Tybalt to navigate them to being the one to get Tybalt off of them more than once. It's such a natural progression in the books that it's super jarring to go back to where it started.
Chapter Two:
There's a lot of reasons that I want an October Daye TV show; seeing how rose goblins would be depicted is very high on that list.
Toby and Sylvester's non-conversation about coming to live in Shadowed Hills makes me wonder if Toby will eventually give up her residence in the mortal world and permanently move to the Summerlands. I don't think that she'd move into someone's court, given that Tybalt probably wouldn't be comfortable living in the Divided Courts even after he gives up his position as King of Cats. Maybe she'll establish or takeover a knowe if/when she re-establishes Home?
One of the reasons for Toby not wanting to live in Shadowed Hills being that Rayseline would kill her in her sleep is another great example of how the relationships in this series progress (or regress). I would never, in a *million* years, have thought that Rayseline would eventually ASK Toby to let her come live with her.
First mention of Duchess Riordan!
I think Toby gets better about tempting fate in later books, but *wow* is she bad about it here. 'How many precautions did I need?' Be the Serpent!Toby would never.
Chapter Three:
Luidaeg!!! She shows up MUCH faster in this book, although I don't think we ever see her in person? I have to say, as much as I love Toby's and the Luidaeg's relationship now, I'm surprisingly fond of the 'Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning' era of their relationship.
'Be careful out there. Don't go into the dark alone; don't let their eyes fool you. Remember what you're looking for. Don't trust what the blood tells you. Always look back.' I don't think Toby was *terrible* at following this? But maybe Toby should've taken the Luidaeg giving her vaguely prophetic warnings as a sign that this was going to be a lot more dangerous than babysitting duty.
I wonder if the Luidaeg is worried her geas is going to force her hand about killing Toby. Maybe the Luidaeg's hoping that she'll be able to put if off until Toby can get rid of it so she won't have to hold herself to it?
Toby talking about how the Luidaeg's lonely makes me so saaaad. And she doesn't even know!
It was Real Weird when Toby grabbed the bat (and Dare's knife) to arm herself instead of having her knives as consistent accessories. It keeps being a bit of a shock how vulnerable Toby is in the first few books - few weapons, way more killable, NO understanding of what she is/what she's capable of doing. It's fun knowing how much Toby's going to be capable of doing, but I feel, like, retroactively anxious for her right now?
That's it for now! Hopefully it won't take me too long to get back into doing this, but we'll see how it goes!

His Brightest Star
Remus is lying awake, staring up at the ceiling, listening to Peter shift restlessly around in his bed and James turn the pages of his book. His eyes feel heavy, the exhaustion from a week of classes and studying weighing down on him, but he doesn´t want to fall asleep. At least not yet. His gaze shifts from the ceiling to the window, where a million stars light up the night sky.
He traces the constellations with his eyes, after years of Astronomy classes knowing them by heart. There´s Orion, the hunter, the most obvious one with his belt, right next to it the V-shape that forms Taurus´ head and the faint stars of the Pleaides cluster and when he turns his head just so, he can see Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. A small smile appears on his face, and he tears his gaze away from the window, looking over at his Sirius, lying just a few metres away. It´s too dark to see more than an outline of a body beneath a blanket, but he can still feel his heart starting to beat faster, a warm feeling blooming in his chest.
While Peter has finally stopped turning and is now snoring softly, James is still reading, and Remus starts considering using a sleeping spell on him. Maybe he´s steal one of the sleeping potions next time he has detention. A moment later though, James finally puts his book down and with a whispered Nox the soft glow of light disappears. Soon he can hear his deep and regular breaths and Remus figures that he has finally fallen asleep. He turns back onto his side, staring at the bed next to his. Sirius doesn´t move, though, and after another minute Remus almost believes that he has fallen asleep already. The thought makes his heart drop, and he has to fight against the disappointment he feels rising inside him. He should be glad that Sirius is getting some sleep at last. Lately there have been far too many nights he´d spent lying away, unable to fall asleep, the little sleep he managed to get restless and troubled. Still, Remus has gotten used to having Sirius next to him, wrapped around him while he falls asleep and despite the exhaustion from before, he finds it hard to fall asleep now. His thoughts keep spiralling, like they so often do when he´s alone in the dark, and he is about to just get up and go for a midnight walk, when he hears the rustling of sheets and a moment later naked feet hitting the ground. Remus almost doesn´t dare turn back around, not quite convinced that his mind isn´t playing tricks on him or that this isn´t some kind of dream. But then he hears footsteps coming closer to his bed and a moment later he can feel someone hovering over him.
“Remus, are you still awake?” Sirius´s whispered voice asks, and Remus can feel a smile forming on his lips. He shifts around, looking up at Sirius, his skin even paler in the dim light of the moon. With his black hair falling into his face, he almost looks like a ghost, and for a second Remus doubts if he isn´t a figment of his imagination after all, but then he smiles, looking as beautiful and alive as ever, and the spell is broken. Remus lifts his blanket and Sirius doesn´t waste any time before climbing into the bed, bringing a wave of cold night air with him. Goosebumps rise on Remus´ skin as Sirius´s legs tangle with his and his hands find their way to his face, his fingers freezing cold. Sirius leans forward, pressing a soft kiss to Remus´ lips and if he shivers, they can both pretend it´s from the cold and nothing more.
“Almost thought you´d stand me up, Black.”
Remus can see Sirius´ lips turn up into a grin, his eyes sparkling.
“I wouldn´t dare, Lupin. I´m far too scared Potter would snatch you away from me.”
At that Remus can´t help but laugh, clutching his hands to his mouth to stifle the noise. He quickly whispers “Sonoro Quiescis”, casting a silencing spell over his bed as not to wake the others. He feels the outside world dull ever so slightly and finally finds himself able to relax. Now it´s only Sirius and him and Remus would never admit it, but those stolen hours between sleep and waking are his favourite moments.
“You´re an idiot, you know that, right?”
Sirius chuckles softly and kisses him again, once again taking Remus´ breath away.
“You keep telling me.”
Remus rolls his eyes, but can´t quite keep the fond smile off his face.
“You keep giving me reasons to do so.”
Sirius smirks.
“So, no need to worry about James and you flying off into the sunset then? Holding hands and leaving me behind?”
All Remus can do is shake his head.
“I don´t even know if you´d be more jealous of James or me in this scenario.”
Sirius lets out a laugh, beaming at Remus.
“What you are telling me is that I do need to be worried.”
Remus doesn´t even dignify that with an answer, instead pulling Sirius closer and kissing him, hands buried in his hair. He feels Sirius melt in his arms and when they part there´s a slightly dazed look on his face and even in the dim moonlight Remus can see the red tint of his cheeks, his hair an utter mess. Remus reaches up and brushes one of the hair strands out of Sirius´ face, trailing his finger down his neck. He can feel Sirius take a shaky breath, still staring at him like a deer in the headlights.
The words “I love you. Merlin, do you have any idea how deeply I´m in love with you, Sirius Black?” flicker through his mind, but he can´t say them. Not now, maybe never. Instead, he presses one last kiss to Sirius´ lips, before whispering: “We should really go to sleep.”
“You´re so boring, Lupin,” Sirius gives back, but curls up in his arms, nonetheless, fitting right into his embrace as if he was made to be there, two puzzle pieces, fitting perfectly together. In a few hours Remus will wake up and shake Sirius awake, who will steal into his own bed again, unseen and unheard, like he was never here at all, like it was all just a dream, but for now Remus gets to hold him, and fall asleep listening to his heart beating slow and steady, and he wouldn´t trade this for anything in the world.

21 and 26 :)
21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue
This one is so hard! Particularly because I have the memory of a goldfish and even though I'm sure there are parts I was very proud of when I wrote them, I can never anything afterward.
But I do think I like the scene in The Unexpected Grace of Falling Apart where Caroline is at the cemetery for the anniversary of her mother's passing, having the worst time of her life, totally wasted and miserable, and Klaus shows up (because of course he noticed she'd disappeared, and of course he knew what day it was, and of course he knew where to find her, and of course he was the only one) and boding happens. I like the flow of the conversation. I like that it feels a bit like it's the heart of the story. Caroline clearly needed someone to talk to but, as always, decided to keep it to herself because she didn't want to burden anyone, and nobody was keeping a close enough eye on her to see how she was just on the verge of breaking at this point. But the second Klaus appears, things just start pouring out of her. And then Klaus unexpectedly shares something very personal with her and it changes everything. Because he sees what she's going through, through the incoherent and drunk mess that she is, and he just understands. He sees her and he knows what she needs without her ever having to spell it out or ask for it.
I'll put it under read more.
26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
Reposting Pendulum, I think. It's my favorite story I ever wrote, so to finally have a version of it I think was good enough felt great lol But this might change in a couple of months when I decided to re-read it. I'm very volatile.
Thanks for your asks! And I'm still taking numbers from this fic writer ask list, if you're interested.
"Would you believe me if I said I figured you might be having a terrible day?"
Caroline feels a bit of a sting in her heart. Terrible doesn't even begin to cut it, she wants to say. But then she frowns, a random thought crossing her mind. "Don't you think the word terrible is way too overused?"
Klaus blinks at her. "What do you mean?"
"People say terrible all the time. Everything is terrible. It's been - I don't know... Triliavized. Trivalidized. Tri - oh, fuck it. You know what I mean.”
“Trivialized,” he provides with ease.
“Whatever. Anyway. If everything is terrible, then nothing really is."
"So you're not having a terrible day?"
She huffs out a drunk laugh, devoid of any humor. "No, I am. This - today - definitely, definitely goes under the terrible category. Hence..." Caroline waves her bottle in the air. "I used to call home every time I had a bad day. My mother had a million things to do, but she would always stop everything to listen to me rant - and boy, can I rant."
"Don't I know that?" Klaus replies quietly, lips pulling into the bare hint of grin.
She barely hears him. "I always used that word, terrible. Whenever my boss was a dick, or my date turned out to be dumb and uninteresting, or when I spilled coffee all over my shirt on the way to work, it would always be the start of a terrible day my mom would hear all about later. She held her phone to her ear until it burned but she soldiered on, never told me to shut up, or to get a grip, or to stop whining. She just… Listened. Like it actually mattered that I was upset. But it was all so stupid. Now that I think about it... Moody boss? Sucky date, freaking spilled coffee? None of that is terrible. It's just... Inconvenient.” She turns to look at him. “Do you know what's really terrible? A dead mother. That is truly, truly terrible. It should be in the dictionary, next to the definition of the word terrible. And it's a terrible that keeps on giving, you know? It's a terrible that never ends, because it doesn't matter how much time goes by, or how many good days I have, after everything, when I go to sleep at night, my mother is still dead, and there's never gonna be a time when that will stop being terrible. And that’s the whole problem, you know? I didn’t realize how ungrateful I was. I didn't appreciate things as I should have, because my parameters were all messed up. I didn't know what terrible really was. And now I do. I live in terrible now, constantly. And I would give anything to go back to the days when spilled coffee was my idea of the end of the world. I'd bathe myself in hot coffee every single morning, from here to the end of my life, or go through a thousand miserable dates if I could just call my mom and -"
Her voice cracks up, a brand new wave of hot tears streaming down her face. Caroline didn't even realize she'd started crying until the lump in her throat became too painful, spilling out of her in sobs.
In spite of how much she's had to drink, the suffocating tightness is a very sobering sensation. When she wakes up tomorrow, with her skull pounding and the mother of all hangovers roaring through her, this ache will still be there, like shattered glass ripping her to shreds on the inside.
Klaus offers her a handkerchief, and Caroline takes it, dabbing it in her eyes to wipe the worst of her ugly tears away. Her ruined mascara stains the pearly white fabric - because of course she didn't even remember to put the waterproof one on.
If she weren't feeling so miserable, she might hate herself for breaking down in front of him like this. As it is, she couldn't care less. All the petty resentment she's been harboring towards Klaus for a year now feels small compared to everything else.
"I had a little brother," he starts talking after a moment. Caroline turns to him, confusion creasing her brow. He's staring ahead, a faraway look in his eyes, but a grim set to his lips. "Henrik. He was my favorite. The youngest of us, but so smart, so curious. I was in university, but I went home for his birthday weekend. He demanded we all did. It was the only thing that could ever get the lot of us in the same room. As a family, we're one big irreconcilable difference, but we had this one soft spot in common: Henrik. None of us knew how to say no to him. He had just recently gotten into football - real football, not your appalling version of it. Couldn't stop talking about the bloody thing. He wanted to go see a match and wouldn't leave me alone until I said yes, so I took him. His team won, he was radiant, wouldn’t shut up on the way back. We were almost home when a truck didn't stop at a red light." A muscle twitches on Klaus' jaw, his throat shifting. "Henrik died in my arms," he says, raw emotion thickening his speech "He was only thirteen."
Caroline curls her fingers, balling her hands to hold back the urge to touch him. "I'm sorry," she says in a small, tight voice. "That must've been -"
"Terrible?" he finishes for her with a rueful grin. "Yes. It was. It's been a decade and I still think about him almost every day, in one way or another. I don't think I'll ever stop. That's the truly harrowing part of losing someone so soon, isn't it? They leave so many blank spaces behind. You can never stop wondering. What they would've done, what they would’ve liked, where they would've gone, moments you would've shared. I suppose it's the same with your mother. She was still young."
Caroline feels the burn of fresh tears behind her eyes once more as she turns back to the gray headstone in front of her. Her mom would've been 50 this year. Caroline had big plans.
"I could paint the truth in pastel colors and make it more palatable for you, but I think you're someone who appreciates honesty, no matter how brutal it might be." Klaus turns his face to her, waiting until she meets his eyes, calm and understanding, before continuing. "The pain never really goes away. You'll never stop missing your mother. You'll think you're fine, that you're over it, and then out of the blue, you'll see something that reminds you of her - her favorite movie on TV, her favorite dish on a menu, her favorite song playing at a store - and it'll hurt all over again. But the pain won't always feel like a fresh wound. It gets dulled with time, as you learn how to live with it, until it becomes a part of you. You'll grow around it, become stronger, and soon it won't feel so much as pain anymore, but almost like a fond memory. It'll be good, and you'll be glad that it's there. It means she's still with you, that you haven't forgotten. And so, when you get that twinge deep in your chest... You'll surprise yourself by being grateful."

Mega Man 3 is an action-platform video game developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the third game of the original Mega Man series and was originally released in Japan on September 28, 1990. The game was released in North America later in 1990 and in European regions by Nintendo in 1992. Taking place after the events of Mega Man 2, the plot follows the titular hero as he helps his creator, Dr. Light, and a supposedly former enemy, Dr. Wily, collect parts for a peace-keeping robot by defeating several Robot Masters that have gone haywire.
An action-platform game, Mega Man 3 follows the same format set forth by its two predecessors. The player, as Mega Man, must complete a series of stages in any order. Defeating a stage's boss will earn the player its special weapon, which can be selected and used at will throughout the rest of the game. Mega Man 3 introduces new gameplay elements such as Mega Man's canine sidekick Rush and the ability to slide along the ground. Unlike the first two installments of the series, artist and designer Keiji Inafune has considered the creation of Mega Man 3 to be very stressful due to time constraints and his own increased responsibilities during its development.
Following the success of Mega Man 2 released two years earlier, Mega Man 3 has sold 1.17 million copies and has been positively received in critical reviews. Its presentation and gameplay has been especially praised, although many sources found the game to be too difficult. Like other titles in the series, Mega Man 3 has been re-released several times on other gaming platforms, on mobile phones, and as part of various Mega Man franchise compilations.
Mega Man 3 takes place during an unspecified year during the 21st century (20XX). 2-3 months after Mega Man 2, the mad scientist Dr. Wily, having twice had plans for world domination dashed, claims to have reformed and begins work with Dr. Light on a project to build a peace-keeping robot named "Gamma". Robot Masters – Top Man, Shadow Man, Spark Man, Magnet Man, Hard Man, Snake Man, Gemini Man, and Needle Man – in charge of a set of "mining worlds", however, go berserk and make off with Gamma's eight power crystals. Mega Man is called into action, this time with a canine companion named Rush, to retrieve the crystals from the sites. Throughout his mission, the protagonist continuously encounters and spars with Break Man, a masked foe who has abilities comparable to Mega Man's own. After Mega Man destroys the eight Robot Masters, he then revisits four of the mining sites to face off against eight "Doc Robots", who possess the abilities of the Robot Masters from Mega Man's previous mission. Once the crystals are retrieved, Wily reverts to his evil ways, steals Gamma, and retreats to his new fortress. To stop Wily's newest plan to conquer the world, Mega Man destroys Gamma and defeats Wily in a final confrontation. As the fortress begins to crumble, Break Man appears in enough time to save Mega Man, but is too late to save Wily, who is seen being crushed under the rubble. When Mega Man regains consciousness in Dr. Light's lab, his creator informs him that Break Man was actually his older brother Proto Man.
Mega Man 3 retains the platforming and action game elements established by the two Mega Man games released before it. The player controls the protagonist Mega Man as he traverses eight selectable stages. The player's primary blaster weapon is used to fend off the game's numerous enemies. Several power-ups can be picked up in each stage, including life energy, special weapon ammunition, extra lives, and "E-Tanks", which are stored and can be selected to completely refill the player's life energy. At the end of every stage the player must defeat a Robot Master boss: Magnet Man, Hard Man, Top Man, Shadow Man, Spark Man, Snake Man, Gemini Man, or Needle Man. Each Robot Master features a unique weapon and stage related to the weapon's power. After defeating a boss, their signature weapon is added to Mega Man's arsenal. The Robot Masters are weak to the weapons of certain other Robot Masters, allowing the player to ease the boss battles by clearing some stages before others.
Mega Man 3 is the first Mega Man game to feature the slide maneuver, which lets the player slip under enemy attacks and low-level barriers. After completing certain stages, Mega Man can access new abilities in his robot dog companion Rush. Rush's transformations include the "Rush Coil" for jumping higher, the "Rush Jet" for flying around the screen, and the "Rush Marine" for traveling underwater. Throughout the various stages the player encounters Proto Man (as Break Man), a mini-boss who, once defeated, will open passageways for the player to advance. Mega Man 3 also expands upon the two preceding games by having additional stages set between the initial eight Robot Masters and the linear stages of Dr. Wily's fortress. A password system can be used to return to the game with most of the stages completed. The "Doc Robots" are fought after defeating all 8 Robot Masters. The Doc Robots are faced in the Spark Man stage, Needle Man stage, Gemini Man stage, and Shadow Man stage.

Collisions between asteroids may lead to formation of metal asteroids able to generate and record magnetism
Yale researchers may have solved a longstanding puzzle as to why certain metallic meteorites show traces of a magnetic field—a finding that may shed light on the formation of magnetic dynamos at the core of planets.
Planetary magnetism is key to understanding both the internal structure and evolution of many celestial bodies. The cores of Earth, Mercury, and two of Jupiter's moons, Ganymede and Io, for example, all generate detectable magnetic fields. And there are traces of ancient magnetism found on Mars and Earth's moon.
But there are also meteorites—small space rocks that have fallen to Earth—that contain hints of magnetism. Scientists say some iron meteorites bear the remnants of an internally-generated magnetic field—which shouldn't be possible. Although iron meteorites are thought to represent the metallic cores of asteroids (small planetary bodies), these cores are not expected to have the highly specific internal characteristics necessary to simultaneously generate and record magnetism.
In a new study, Yale scientists Zhongtian Zhang and David Bercovici propose that under certain conditions, collisions between asteroids can lead to the formation of metal asteroids that can generate a magnetic field and record the magnetism by their own materials. Small fragments of these asteroids, with the traces of magnetism, could fall to Earth as meteorites.
The study appears in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"I had been aware of this puzzle for some time," said Zhang, a graduate student in Yale's Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and first author of the study. "When I first came to Yale and discussed potential research directions with Dave, one of the papers he sent me was about the observation of paleomagnetism in iron meteorites."
Several years later, Zhang was conducting research on what are known as "rubble-pile" asteroids, which are created when gravitational forces cause the fragments of asteroid collisions to re-form in new combinations.
That work inspired Zhang and Bercovici to consider the question of whether the rubble pile phenomenon might be relevant to the generation of a magnetic field.
The researchers' modeling suggests that after an asteroid collision, it is possible for new, iron-heavy asteroids to form with a cold, rubble-pile inner core surrounded by a warmer liquid outer layer. When the colder core begins to draw heat from the outer layer, and lighter elements such as sulphur are released, they report, it initiates convection—which in turn creates a magnetic field.
According to their model, this sort of dynamo could generate a magnetic field for several million years, which would be long enough for its presence to be detected in iron meteorites by scientists billions of years later.
"There are several pieces to this puzzle for which Zhongtian has devised a creative and clever solution," said Bercovici, the Frederick William Beinecke Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences in Yale's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
"For instance, the idea of a rubble-pile core is really like dropping ice cubes into a molten metal," Bercovici said. "They can't be too big or too small. But there is an optimum size that is just small enough to cool in space, but also sink fast enough into the melted metal and pile up in the center to make an inner core like Earth's, at least for a little while."

KYIV—As Ukraine gears up for a counteroffensive, Moscow has ramped up its campaign to get Ukrainian civilians in occupied territories to accept Russian citizenship. Ukrainian officials are now fiercely debating how to treat fellow citizens who have done so.
The catalyst is a new decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 27, which states that Ukrainians residing in the illegally annexed territories of Ukraine who have not received Russian citizenship are considered foreigners or stateless individuals. Foreign citizens will have “the right” to reside on these territories until July 2024. No deadline for their registration is given. Disturbingly, they may be deported if they “present a threat to national security.”
Aggressive decrees such as these are just the latest stage of Russia’s “passportization.” Before its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last February, Russia had used this foreign-policy tool in the breakaway states of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transnistria, as well as Ukraine’s Donbas region.
But in those areas of Ukraine occupied since Russia’s invasion started on Feb. 24, 2022, passportization has unfolded in record time. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin stated on May 30 that since their illegal annexation in September 2022, almost 1.5 million Ukrainians in the four provinces of Ukraine illegally annexed by Russia last year had received Russian passports.
Ivan Fedorov is the mayor of Melitopol, a strategically important Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The first stage of the campaign was to propagandize Russian passports, he told Foreign Policy—though only a handful of local collaborators took them.
“In the second stage, they tried to put up restrictions for Ukrainian citizens; they’d face problems using medical services, education, transport, or health care,” said Fedorov, whose team relocated to the safety of the city of Zaporizhzhia. The mayor’s account of distinct stages to passportization is corroborated by Russian officials’ own statements in local pro-Russian newspapers, such as the official publication of the Kherson occupation authorities. The occupiers first promoted the Russian passport as a birthright and source of pride. Later, they declared the passport as a source of security, giving lengthening lists of the social services which could not be accessed without one. The current stage is the most forceful.
Locals say that business and property owners soon came into the Russians’ sights—the better to indirectly pressure employees and to raise tax revenue for the Russian budget.
“They made Melitopol the administrative center and demanded that all property be re-registered there. They said they’d search for the owners, and if none appeared, the property would be declared vacant and auctioned off. To demonstrate your ownership, you had to come to occupied territory in person with the documents,” said Ihor Semyvolos, a Kyiv-based political analyst with family ties to the Zaporizhzhia region. “After the so-called referendums and annexations, they started to more actively persuade owners, businesses, and so on to receive Russian citizenship. Only after that could they sort out their property rights. And only after that were they guaranteed at least some level of protection from their property being looted,” Semyvolos continued.
“Now people are afraid not only about losing big property; they’re afraid of being deported and losing their house. But even in these conditions, people are refusing to take Russian citizenship. They believe that Ukraine will return,” Semyvolos noted.
Independent estimates of Ukrainians who have taken Russian passports vary wildly. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s ombudsman, told Foreign Policy that the real number is not known. As early as last June, Vladimir Rogov, the Moscow-imposed governor of the Zaporizhzhia region to which Melitopol belongs, told Russian media that 70,000 people across the region had applied for Russian passports. This came shortly after Putin signed a decree fast-tracking applications for Russian citizenship from the occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine. However, Fedorov told Foreign Policy last month that in Melitopol, the largest city in the region under Russian occupation, less than 4,000 residents have taken citizenship—and only 1,000 of them enthusiastically.
Neither those who have fled or are yet to be born were exempt. In June, the Russia-imposed authorities of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson declared that all newborns in their respective regions would automatically become Russian citizens. A month after last September’s annexations, Putin even targeted residents of occupied Ukraine who had fled—they had a month to declare their allegiance.
The Russian authorities do not want to wait anymore. Ukrainian media suggest that coercion is becoming more violent, with locals who do not hold Russian passports increasingly harassed at military checkpoints. Residents of the occupied Zaporizhzhia region have told Associated Press reporters that receiving medical treatment required a Russian passport, as did registering a car.
To a Russian soldier at a checkpoint in a front-line region, a Ukrainian passport is grounds for suspicion. And as testimonies from civilians who lived under occupation indicate, those soldiers operate with impunity. Torture is a widespread method of control. Russia’s system of brutal “filtration camps” reportedly grades Ukrainians by perceived disloyalty.
The latest passportization steps could reflect a practical, if brutal, need to get the most out of a recalcitrant conquered population, say observers. Fedorov believes that Moscow wants the PR benefit of a good turnout from the “new territories” at Russia’s regional elections in September. On May 29, Putin signed a bill allowing elections to go ahead on territories under martial law. It also allows the “forcible and controlled” deportation of citizens to areas not under martial law—areas deep inside Russia.
Then there is the fact that new Russian citizens can be conscripted into the army. It’s a key point in Ukrainian government videos from last year urging citizens under occupation not to take Russian passports. It may be no coincidence that last September, on the same day as the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, Putin also signed a decree easing the path for Russian citizenship for foreigners who fight in Russia’s army. A Russian mobilization thereby forces Ukrainians under occupation to participate in the invasion of their own country—an invasion the Kremlin shows no intention of stopping.
And because that invasion drags on, the Russian authorities need to demonstrate their confidence to civilians in a deeply insecure situation, argued Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during an interview in downtown Kyiv. “In occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, they are less certain of their position, so they’re more likely to burst into houses with weapons demanding that somebody take a passport. In Crimea, they think they’re there for a hundred, two hundred years, so they carry out a more drawn-out process, but still a forcible one,” Podolyak said.
Here in Kyiv, it’s apparent that Ukrainian officials’ declarations that they are determined to liberate Crimea are made in earnest, despite fears that the peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, is a red line for Moscow. Crimea is where passportization began, say officials, and Crimea is where it must end.
Ukrainian officials who monitor Crimea believe that the peninsula is the testing ground for all Russia’s methods and technologies of occupation. Maria Tomak, head of the Crimea Platform Department at the Office of the Ukrainian President, told Foreign Policy that Crimea is the best-case scenario for Russian policymakers. “They want other occupied territories to resemble it,” said Tomak in an interview in the Ukrainian capital.
Thus, Crimea is important because it shows how passportisation can be played out in the longer term. Nine years after the illegal annexation, the vast majority of locals there are believed  by Ukrainian officials to have Russian passports, and thousands of Russian citizens have moved there. Moreover, in 2021 Putin signed a decree adding Crimea to a list of sensitive “border regions” of the country, prohibiting foreign citizens from owning land or property there. It was a potent move to impose Russian citizenship on those who still possessed Ukrainian passports. Nevertheless, some persisted—as in the case of Lenie Umerova, a Crimean Tatar woman arrested last month when she attempted to visit an ailing relative on the occupied peninsula. Family members believe it was precipitated by her still holding a Ukrainian passport.
Stories such as these have precipitated a fierce debate among Ukrainian policymakers about their legal response to passportization. Shortly after Putin’s decree, Ukrainian Minister of Temporarily Occupied Territories and Reintegration Iryna Vereshchuk advised Ukrainians living under occupation to leave if possible and not take a Russian passport. This prompted a response from the country’s ombudsman, Lubinets, who advised them to accept a Russian passport if they could not leave and their survival was at risk. Vereshchuk, who is also Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, has since told Ukrainian media that her position was misunderstood, and that she and Lubinets are “on the same wavelength” on the issue.
As Volodymyr Yavorskyy of the nongovernmental organization Human Rights House put it, this seeming clash of explanations reflects the tough position in which Ukrainian officials find themselves. They must make one statement in public and another directly to people under occupation. “If you say that Ukrainians can take Russian passports, Russian propagandists will say that Ukraine accepts Russia’s presence on these territories. If you say that people will be criminally responsible for taking Russian passports, that’s the wrong step because it’s not really possible to stay on these territories with only Ukrainian documents,” Yavorskyy said.
Lubinets told Foreign Policy in an email that the vagueness of Putin’s April 27 decree is likely a deliberate attempt to scare Ukrainians into applying for Russian citizenship as soon as possible. He added that as the Ukrainian government does not recognize Russia’s forced passportization, the process is not a grounds for losing Ukrainian citizenship. Moscow has reacted in kind; this March, it passed a law allowing Ukrainians to renounce their citizenship by making a declaration to the Russian, rather than the Ukrainian, authorities.
Podolyak, the presidential advisor, told Foreign Policy that Lubinets’s and Vereshchuk’s statements on the decree were not mutually exclusive. “They’re talking about two different situations. Ms. Vereshchuk is correct in saying that the state cannot accept people taking Russian passports by their own initiative, of their own will, not facing any threats. That’s an unpleasant situation, as it demonstrates a citizen’s disloyalty, as does active participation in the occupying authorities,” he explained at his office in Kyiv.
“Of course, if somebody is forced to give up their Ukrainian passport and take a Russian one under threat, then their life is the most important thing. They haven’t gone through a process of voluntary renunciation of their Ukrainian citizenship. We approach those situations with understanding; that’s passive acceptance, and I stress that it is different,” said Podolyak.
Podolyak suggested that a citizen who took a Russian passport in the first month of occupation would naturally be treated differently from somebody who waited a year and a half before giving in.
Lubinets also stressed the importance of perceived motivation. “After our victory, we will legally give every citizen the opportunity to declare their position and actions,” he wrote—from those who were forced to take Russian passports to survive to those who “compiled lists of Ukrainian children for forced deportation.”
“We should not punish everybody who lives on these territories but nor should we give a blanket amnesty to everybody; this is a state where the rule of law is a founding principle,” said Podolyak.
In short, the reckoning will be done on a case-by-case basis. It will be an enormous undertaking. As longtime observer of the Luhansk Region Brian Milakovsky, wrote, there are grounds to wonder whether a Ukrainian society traumatized by war will be understanding of the choices and dilemmas which their fellow citizens under occupation faced.
In Kyiv, raising the topic of Russia’s passportization elicits a telling phrase—“at the barrel of a gun.” It is a phrase which covers only the most extreme cases of duress. It does not account for what the Ukrainian analyst Elina Beketova called a “web of bureaucratic oppression”—the systematic constriction of the normal lives of Ukrainian citizens.
This is why in September, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers presented a draft law on the concept of forcible passportization. “It changes the center of legal accountability from those who own a Russian passport to those who put them in the position where they have to accept one,” Podolyak  explained. The bill has yet to be adopted, pending what Podolyak called changes to the current “dynamic situation.”
The bar will be higher for Ukrainian state and local officials; if this law is passed, they will face criminal liability for taking Russian citizenship. So will anybody who propagandizes Russian citizenship.
Andrii Chernousov, the chief lawyer at the Voices of Children Foundation, stresses that the actions and statements of Kyiv officials also play a part in the decisions taken by those under occupation. “People are between two flames. On the one side, they’re afraid that after deoccupation they’ll be prosecuted; on the other, they are pressured by the occupiers who restrict everything,” he said in an interview at the offices of the Kyiv-based charity.
Chernousov emphasized that passportization is only one step in a broader process—“the process of Russification.”
The right bank of the Kherson region provides a glimpse of what may be to come. Russian occupation of this area was ended by Ukrainian forces last November, yet Kherson is still heavily shelled by Russian forces across the Dnipro River. This month, the regional prosecutor told Most, a local news outlet, that 162 people were implicated in cases of collaboration with Russia.
Moreover, Most reported that local farmers now feared legal repercussions for having re-registered their land with the Russian authorities—one of the requirements that also compelled locals to receive Russian passports. In response, Ukraine’s Agrarian Council decried the vagueness of laws defining collaboration.
“Many people want simple solutions. Here we are always stuck between zrada [betrayal] and peremoha [victory]. … Let’s say we prosecute everybody who is against Ukraine—everybody who took passports,” Chernousov explained. “In that case, I see no prospects not only for deoccupation of these territories, but more importantly—their reintegration.”
