20- a kiss on a scar; samriley

(this was genuinely some of the most fun i’ve ever had writing anything ever. also heavily inspired by that one line of noah kahan’s “everywhere, everything.” you’ll know the one.)

“What happened here?”

“Oh my god, when I was in the fifth grade, our next door neighbor had this horrible chihuahua. It was a real monster. I wandered into their yard one day to get my baseball-“

“Oh, this was during your baseball phase?”

“Yes, this was during my baseball phase,” Riley gave Sam a withering look. “Anyway. I wandered into the yard to get my baseball, and the thing came at me like a fuckin- like the fuckin SWAT team that one time in Iceland.”

Sam let out a loud bark of laughter, one that made his chest shake where Riley was lying on it. “Did you get a rabies shot or anything?”

“I think so. I don’t really remember. It was a weird time in my life.”

“Yeah, your baseball phase was a weird time in your life.”

“Man, shut up.”

Riley’s freckled face turned a bit pink as he tried to hide in the crook of Sam’s neck, warm breath sending ripples of electricity down his spine.

Sam sighed contentedly, resting his hand on the back of Riley’s head, fingers slipping effortlessly through the short auburn curls. He let his attention rest on the large drive-in movie screen in front of them, which had fallen out of focus at least an hour ago when Riley had decided to make himself comfortable acting as Sam’s own personal blanket, the two intertwining so completely that it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.

The movie seemed to be wrapping up, much to Sam’s dismay. He didn’t want this moment to end- he would put it in a polaroid picture if he could. Then he would live inside of it, make himself cozy in his beat-up old SUV where he could lay with Riley forever. They had put the back seats down- “So we can look at the stars. And catch fireflies-“ and snuggled up together with the trunk open, their feet dangling off the edge of the bumper.

Sam would agree to anything if it made Riley happy.

“What about this one?”

Riley broke Sam out of his thoughts by picking up his head and running his thumb carefully across a thick scar that spanned the length of Sam’s right collarbone, peeking out from under the neckline of his shirt. It wasn’t very visible, but the scar tissue could be felt beneath long-healed skin.

“Fell headfirst out of a tree. I was twelve. I think I thought I could fly.” He smiled softly down at Riley, who was studying every inch of his face like it was his first time seeing it. “Fractured my collarbone, I’m lucky I wasn’t paralyzed.”

Riley hummed, brushing his fingers across the exposed skin once more. His touch was addictive, nearly making Sam shiver despite the sticky summer night air.

“I have one from falling out of a tree too! I was in kindergarten though,” Riley sat up and pushed up his sleeve, showing Sam the pale pink scar that stretched across his elbow. “Twinsies.”

“Twinsies,” Sam agreed solemnly, despite giggling internally at the entire idea of using that word. He pushed up on his elbows, admiring Riley’s profile, the soft rise and fall of his shoulders as he breathed, the way that the soft golden bulb lights lighting up the area made his hair shine red and orange and golden, like the most brilliant sunset Sam had ever seen.

In a rare moment of confidence, Sam took Riley’s bicep in his hand, closing his fingers around the warm skin just above his elbow.

Riley looked back at him, eyes wide, a small smile playing across his lips, and the whole world stopped spinning for several seconds.

Sam leaned forward to press his lips to the scar on Riley’s elbow, and then the aforementioned chihuahua attack scar on his forearm, lips barely ghosting across silky skin. They were barely kisses, more like questions, “do you like this?” and “is this okay?”

Riley exhaled slowly, eyes trained on Sam the entire time, looking at him with so much tenderness that his gaze felt like warm water pouring across goosebump-riddled flesh.

Something inside Sam’s chest came undone when Riley twisted around to kiss his forehead, a surge of emotions that he didn’t know he was capable of feeling nearly overwhelming him.

There was no scar on his forehead. Riley had kissed him for the sake of kissing him, had pressed his lips to Sam’s skin with a gentleness Sam hadn’t known him to be capable of.

Sam opened his eyes that he hadn’t even realized had fallen shut to Riley’s, big and tearful and just inches away from him, filling his field of vision and his heart with something indescribably beautiful.

“Hey. I- I love you,” Riley whispered, as if the words might shatter everything rare and priceless that had been building between them.

“I love you too.”

1. 500 Days of Winter, M, 16.7K

In a small, dark room in the middle of nowhere, just outside Bucharest, two bodies intertwine. The chorus of sounds and three little words plays over and over and over again. They don't let go for one second.

Tomorrow the world will come knocking at their door, their lives will be turned upside down, but for now, they have each other, and for now, that's more than enough.

Or, the story of Sam and Bucky, and the five hundred days that bound them together.

okay I lied I'm starting with quite possibly my favorite fic I've ever written. I've put a lot of work and care into this one and I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. helps that I was possessed at the time and wrote it quicker than I ever would

2. my struggling form, my willing soul, T, 2K

It was hard, being back into the cold, gray world that was his New York apartment.

Sometimes, his eyes would look around frantically, searching for a sound that rang through the stillness. Only for him to realize that the sound came from within; an old memory, laughter and music, dancing, kids running around. A tender touch to his neck. A satisfied smile of finally being home. Eyes as beautiful as the sunset they were watching, just as striking, just as deep.

He could look at nothing else till the day he died, and would die happy and sure that he’d seen the most beautiful sight this world had to offer.

the first fic in my inspired by Hozier series! it was born into existence through sheer stubbornness (and my deep need to do a bucky character study) I kept listening to the song (which I still fucking love) and reading the lyrics and then this happened and I couldn't be happier

3. darling, i’d go through it again (if i could hold you for a minute), M, 1.8K

There’s an irritating feeling in his chest, making it harder to breathe. It was like this when he first stayed home and Sam started going on missions alone - well not exactly alone, but without Bucky. It took some time, but he got to a better point where he could actually breathe while Sam was away.

This is different, though. This isn’t the tightness of chest he’s come to be on familiar terms with, nor is it the forceful beating his heart has gotten used to dancing to.

He wants to voice it, to let it out, but when he goes to, the words lodge in his throat.

another one from the series and my first MCD! I really liked playing with the fantasy elements in it too

4. for all of the things i am (not), G, 1,8K

‘You’ll find the one,’ people like to say, but the thing is, he already has. He was lucky enough to find him in the scorching desert heat; blond locks that looked like they were on fire, a pair of green eyes so captivating, you couldn’t help but follow them everywhere, and a smile that could bring the proudest men to their knees. He found him, but he slipped away from between his fingers in the darkness of the desert sky as he sank to his fate. Forever falling, forever gone.

Or, Sam's grief catches up with him.

had to throw in my only gen fic up to date and ngl I wanna write another one. unfortunately the engagement with these is quite low I find myself leaning towards character studies with background shipping. but yeah would love to do it again

ok so in terms of like canon stuff i feel like riley and sam had the closest thing u could to a meet cute in the literal army and i see their relationship as like very similar to daveklaus??? i think it definitely like in precatws i see them as meeting on base, maybe even not knowing each other before they got assigned to the project and got their wings etc

there’s a lot of potential for a slow burn there even as just a platonic relationship and tbh given the popularity of media like 1917, dunkirk, top gun, and that rn (which….. the modern stuff is more HMMMM but i mean the interest is there???) n marvels propaganda deal with the us military i don’t know WHY they HAVENT greenlit some sort of d+ mini series giving us a samriley prequel ??? at least a short 😭 but idk maybe they’ll actually give us some sams past crumbs in cap 4?????

in aus though i like to hc riley and sam as having the same hometown, i love the idea of riley being a quintessential southern boy with the drawl and the slang, i also heavily borrow from just say you do’s version of riley in which he has a dry sense of humor and takes no shit just like sam!! i picture him as “sassy” and over the top in the same way as like JVN lol

also i think he and sam have the best fashion sense out of anyone in the group except maybe nat when she’s not dressing super comfy casual (we all know steve and bucky are dead last on that one LMAOOO) bc riley comes from a working class family/started working himself at a really young age and so now he likes to be super deliberate about his sense of style/presentation instead of just whatever he got handed down from neighbors or church donations etc and that was a HUGE part of accepting his sexuality + gender identity (he/they riley u will always be famous)

i also borrow some elements of like adam parrish’s backstory 🤡 in that i see riley’s parents as negligent at best and ab*sive at worst, making the wilsons his sort of pseudo-family/safe space even before he and sam get together whether that’s bc they’re childhood besties in aus or bc they accept sam’s closest comrade into their fold (i cant remember if sam lost his parents before he went into the service so don’t come for me anyone) but yeah like in non canon universes i see their story as highly similar to stevebuckys bc they’re foils duh except ig riley would be closer to comics bucky than mcu bucky w his parents

it’s weird bc i used to exclusively ship stevebucky and then samriley completely separate. since i became open to the idea of multi shipping, i now ship in a different order/way??

like for au’s i still follow the two distinctive ships, meaning if i’m writing stevebucky i’ll usually have established samriley or single sam. however if i’m writing sambucky it’s probably going to be past!samsteve and/or stevebucky as well if not just samstevebucky (the most superior of all ships) 😌 like i might mention riley being sam’s ex before he got together with steve (if i’m including him and steve as a couple and not just friends) or just gets w bucky but the focus is way less on riley’s impact on sam’s dating history than like steve if that makes sense which is just interesting to me?? it’s also a roulette wheel of whether or not i decide to throw in sammisty (my beloved) bc sometimes i like to write bi sam and other times i like to write gay sam

sidenote i see peggy and steve and nat absolutely bi, always, angie as 100% a lesbian, misty and sam as bi4bi, but for sam and bucky i could see them as either bi or gay (although i typically tend to write bucky as either just gay or at most bi-curious but always in relationships with mlm)

i feel like i write more samriley in complete au’s than in canon compliant fics which is odd haha

maybe bc in canon compliant fics, if samriley exists i see them as a monogamous partnership, but if sam is with someone else/poly i typically see it like riley d*ed bc personally i just don’t see them breaking up?? they’re like either that couple u know that’s been together since they were 14 and you never see them without each other OR they’re exactly the same but they actually got married in their early 20s. i say, having explicitly written their divorce before

also idk why but i feel like in my head w poly!sam steve and/or bucky (or misty) are cool w him having paramours and metamours and everything even if they aren’t poly themselves but riley is strictly a one man guy and has no interest in anything outside a monogamous mlm relationship. he’s also demi and a hopeless romantic!

when i write samriley + steve and bucky i see riley as being able to relate to bucky better bc i follow the general fandom hc that riley is also disabled, but he’s somewhat closer w steve bc of sam and bucky’s initial “feud” when riley was still distrustful of bucky and 100% in sam’s corner, meaning he and bucky have a similar dynamic to sam and bucky where they like to banter and antagonize one another but he and steve are more chill and friendly when they talk like he and sam are (although they aren’t above ribbing at each other and referencing embarrassing inside jokes)

13: Most under-appreciate

I wrote three fics this year that weren't tagged SamBucky: 1 Gen Wilson Family, 1 SamSteve, 1 SamRiley so all three of those were pretty low in hits (but the kudos ratio was much higher!) All in all, I'm partial to Secret Ingredient (the gen fic) and would say that's what I would consider the most underappreciated just because I like to see Sam happy 😊

For SamBucky fics, I'd definitely say For the Dancing and the Dreaming. It was one of my favorite fics to write but it had a lot less engagement than my others

29: Most spontaneous

Great question! I really tend to mull over my fics at least a little bit. Gotta make the dough soft before rolling it out. I did post a lot of short fics on tumblr this year, which were all pretty spontaneous. But I think A Time For Dancing was the most out of left field. I happened to watch Footloose and was writing before I finished the movie. I also wrote it very quickly. I think it only took me a weekend or so. It's another fic that I had a lot of fun with and I loved seeing how many people also loved the movie!

how about everyone else's birthdays, fathers days, anniversaries of happy things like weddings but also of deaths :( etc ??

Let me talk firstly about FIRST birthdays!!! First birthdays are always big, and themed, and feature invites to everyone they know. I won't talk too much about Eric's first, bc I'm writing a drabble of that to post soon, buuuuuut, I will say that Sam and Bucky get all their super buddies and a good chunk of Sam's family (including cousin River, TTA callback anyone?) out to DC for it. It's their last party at their DC place, because they've decided at that point to move to Louisiana, so it is HUGE! Aisha's is even bigger, because now all of Sam's old neighbors are just ten minutes away.

Even outside of firsts, birthdays are a big deal. Bucky always bakes the cakes, Sam always gets together balloons and streamers and decor, and Mila is the BEST at scream-singing 'Happy Birthday'.

Father's Day is just a competition between Sam and Bucky to see who can out do the other one when it comes to celebrating them. On their first Father's Day, Sam makes Bucky breakfast in bed and Bucky gets Sam flowers and a wine with a good vintage. A few years later, Sam is making Torres do sky-writing to tell Bucky he's a good dad and Bucky is filling the entire living room with gifts and bouquets. The kids find it laughable at a certain point

Anniversaries are more intimate events, that usually just involve Sarah or Torres taking the kids, and then Sam and Bucky getting some good food and having some good sex. Bucky still always buy flowers.

On the anniversaries of Riley's death and Sam's parents' deaths, Bucky likes to give Sam space for a little while. He'll take the kids to the park or out for breakfast to give Sam some time to grieve on his own. Once Sam texts Bucky that he's ready for them to come back, there's a lot of telling stories and looking at old pictures. Sam and Bucky will have a drink of bourbon, Riley's favorite, every year. Something Sam endlessly appreciates is that Bucky has never made Sam feel he can't speak about Riley, or that Sam has to put away the love he had for him, that he thought they would spend their life together.

That was REALLY LONG SORRY!! But, yeah thats how they celebrate!

(and yes, I do care deeply about samriley)

A WIP Game

Well, @glittercake and @jemgirl86 are tagging everyone, so this might be good motivation for when I'm done with a few things I need to do irl before I start writing another fic.
