Gamora not ending up with Peter subvert our “soul-mate” expectations. In another life, Peter and Gamora were soulmates. They grew and made each other better and their love was sincere. But that Gamora is gone.

GOTG 3 SPOILERS

It’s so important to me how they included Dog Days in Volume 3.

The soundtrack across all the movies has always been super nostalgic older songs. This was reflective of the Guardians themselves. They were all stuck thinking about their older days. About their pasts. They all had something that they couldn’t let go of and couldn’t move on from. It trapped all of them in pain.

But Dog Days is a pivotal moment. It’s a modern song. Across the movies, each of the Guardians have been healing from their pasts and learning how to move on and live their lives. They’ve accepted what has happened to them, but they now understand that it does not define them. They can finally stop letting other people and events have control over their lives. This is their own story. No one else’s. And they get to decide how that story goes and what they want their life to be.

The soundtracks are reflective of this. They go up by a decade each movie.

Everyone going their separate ways in the end to pursue their own lives was the final step in that process.

Furthermore, the fact that Rocket is the one to put on the song means even more. He’s arguably the one most hurt and affected by his past. He couldn’t let go like the others could. He refused to open up about it to anyone, believing he deserved to stay trapped in that pain. But this movie is all about him learning how to move on and live again. He doesn’t have to forget about what happened, but he doesn’t have to continually punish himself for it. Him playing this song shows that the last of the Guardians are finally ready to embrace change.

He’s done running. They all are.

The way everyone in the theater gasped when I saw it and that song came on proves how pivotal of a moment that is.

The dog days are finally over.

i’m about to get very sappy for a moment, (i say as though i’m not always sappy on here), Guardians of the Galaxy has been my absolute favorite for years and this trilogy got me through so much, so having new guardians content and all this hype and appreciation on here for the new movie and these characters who i love so much, and having so many people to talk to about it is amazing for me. i know eventually the hype will die out but this is great right now. like fr Lylla’s right, it is good to have friends.

Okay but I will NEVER recover from the fact that in infinity war Peter and Gamora's last words to each other were literally "I love you" and they were just... ripped apart.

There was no resolution, no closure, no anything. It just ended so abruptly and suddenly. It's so tragic. They had so much potential, and their love was so genuine and real and it just ended so abruptly. I'm fully of the opinion that their love story is one of the saddest of the entire MCU.

Long story short, they deserved better.

It’s, okay, yes they went their separate ways. But it’s so clearly not a bad ending. It’s them still choosing each other, but also themselves. It’s realizing they have healed with each other, for each other, helped one another heal, but it’s also realizing that healing sometimes means taking time apart for yourself, by yourself. Staying in the same place at the same spot isn’t healing, not completely.

They aren’t the same ragtag group we started with. They aren’t the same outcasts. They’ve healed, they’ve become broken again and again. They get back up, they hold each other up. But it’s time to take the steps on their own.

But they aren’t alone. They will always have each other. They will always be a family. You can be a family while separated. Families break apart, they move out and move on but they will always be a home.

GOTG 3 SPOILERS

I don’t think anyone has pointed this out yet but the soundtrack playing in Vol 3 when the Guardians all stood in a circle and announced that they were going their separate ways and Rocket was named captain was the exact same soundtrack that played in Vol 1 when Peter gave his 12% plan loser speech and Rocket said they were a bunch of jackasses standing in a circle.

It’s a parallel of the moment the team officially united to when they officially split.
