Caitlin for the character bingo!
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, she was my least favorite character when I started watching the show, and I was neutral about her for a while, until season 4, which was when I started to actually like her. I kinda felt like she was just there to be the tropey uptight-smart-girl character at first, and while I don't feel that way about her anymore (even when rewatching the earlier seasons), it did take me some time to warm up to her. I think part of that had to do with my thinking she would inevitably get a romantic storyline with Barry and/or Cisco, and I was dreading seeing that happen (with Barry because I didn't care, and with Cisco because I value their friendship too much as-is to want it to be anything else), but once it became clear that the show wasn't gonna go either of those routes with her, I was able to relax and start to appreciate her more.
So the funny thing about Caitlin—I love her, but I dislike so many of her storylines. She spent three seasons being wrapped up in love interest subplots, and when she finally broke out of that cycle, everything started to revolve around Frost. Which wasn't a bad thing at first, but instead of seizing the opportunity to give Caitlin more development, instead the show did the exact opposite, and took away parts of her personality, history, and role on the team, and attributed them to Frost instead, whom they had decided was now a completely different person and not a repressed side of Caitlin anymore. And while there are things I love about them being separate characters, that retcon seriously screwed Caitlin over by limiting her screen time and stunting her potential for more growth (plus it kinda felt like the writers were more interested in Frost, and they didn't know what to do with Caitlin once they'd amputated Frost's personality traits from her, so to speak).
Her treatment in season 8 had a lot to do with why I didn't even watch season 9. She became the character I was most invested in after Cisco left (which I was not expecting), and I just had zero interest in watching things get worse and worse for her.
I hesitated to mark off "the fandom is so mean", because she IS a major fan favorite, but at the same time it's...complicated. You have the section of Iris stans who hate her just to spite Snowbarry shippers, and you have the Frost fans who consider Caitlin to be the lesser/boring Snow, and then there's the chunk of Snowbarry shippers who...don't actually seem to really appreciate her, they just want her with Barry because she's not Iris?? (not black, that is) So like she's simultaneously overrated for qualities she doesn't have, and under-appreciated for qualities she does have.
And of course, I would be remiss not to mention @frosty-the-killer-doll's near-constant cheerleading, endearing me to Caitlin even further.

My prediction about the next four books SJM will publish
I wanted to get this down somewhere, in part to process my angst about the possibility of what may come last in this next cluster of book releases 😫 but also to record the plot and character threads I am seeing as important heading into the next stretch of books SJM will release.
This includes HOFAS, ACOTAR, and TOG spoilers so it's after the break.
DISCLAIMER: These are just my guesses based on various interviews SJM has given both before and after the HOFAS release — THE ONLY SERIES BOOK THAT'S CONFIRMED IN THIS LIST IS ACOTAR5 BEING NEXT, and with that one, the main characters and plot threads I'll mention have also not yet been confirmed (beyond an avalanche of textual evidence 👀)
So, here are my predictions, circa 1.5 weeks after HOFAS was released:
➡️NEXT: ACOTAR5 - Az/Gwyn + Nesta and the Valkyries (which should also include Mor, ideally in a shared storyline with Emerie), Illyria / Ramiel / the Prison (and maybe a return of the pegasuses to Prythian), Gwydion and Truth Teller (not to mention the other two Made blades Nesta forged in ACOSF - also will Narben make an appearance? 👀), and I also think the first part of the Autumn Court drama may be told in this book - the truth about what happened between Mor and Eris, Beron's ongoing treachery, and Beron may die in this book making Eris High Lord (though some of these items may also be in ACOTAR6 instead - I do think the Mor and Eris story needs to come out in ACOTAR5 though, for Az to make peace with his 500 years of pining for her)
➡️FOLLOWED BY: A Throne of Glass crossover book - Shifter Fae + humans, more history and context about when the ancient Erilea Fae world-jumped to Midgard and served the Asteri, a story that creates threads and connections (of some kind, no idea how, and not sure which ToG characters it would entail) to Lidia (deer shifter with fire magic a la Aelin), Tharion (and the Mer as a people - ToG stans, remind me, were there mer in the ToG series at all? I'm pretty sure Rigelus says they hailed from the same world as the wolves and other Midgard shifters - I've read ToG in full but not as closely as ACOTAR and CC), and Ithan (wolf shifter with ice magic a la Dorian)
➡️THEN I AM THINKING: CC4: House of Many Waters - This would be the continuation of the story threads SJM did not resolve or finish by the end of HOFAS: Lidia's "service" to the Ocean Queen (and more RuhnLidia story with Brann and Ace 😍), Tharion/Sathia with Flynn and their earth magic / Avallen and the pegasuses, Ithan as the new Prime of the Wolves (and something with Perry - why did the antidote fade for her so fast?), Firstlight Zero, widespread distribution of the antidote, Ariadne (where did she go??!), and maybe more portal hopping to Prythian for Bryce, Hunt, Ember, and Randall (OH and maybe Ruhn here too, to get him in the same room as Rhys 👀) to further develop the cross-world friendships we saw forming in HOFAS
➡️WHICH MEANS FOURTH IN SJM'S AIRPLANE TAXI LINE WOULD BE (SOBS): ACOTAR6 - Elain/Lucien, Band of Exiles, Firebird retelling, Koschei, the mortal queens, and the conclusion of the big magical conflict that began with the finding of the Dread Trove in ACOSF, not to mention the Archeron sisters finally acknowledging and healing all of their familial baggage that was born from their collective and generational hardships from their time as humans (so Elain also coming to terms with her Seer powers and being Fae / no longer human - also answering the question: What happened when Elain went into the Cauldron?), I also think some of the Autumn Court drama would play out in this story Helion/Lady Autumn and Lucien's heritage (Day Court heir?), as well as more information about Papa Archeron from the time period of ACOWAR when Lucien traveled with him (LOTS of processing complex and problematic parents in this one!)
Again, these are JUST MY IDEAS - the ToG book guess is based on SJM saying after ACOTAR5 she's excited about the world her next book will be in which she implied was not the CC or ACOTAR world, and which will be emotional for her because of "who may pop up" - if that doesn't scream a return to her to the ToG universe then I don't know what would.
Then the 3rd and 4th predictions follow from that 2nd one being ToG and what I think she may focus on in it to add layers to her crossover - which seems like something she would want to do after how much work she's put into it so far.
I think there's a stronger and deeper fanbase for ACOTAR6 than there will be for CC4, so I think that could impact a decision to write and release CC4 first (since us ACOTAR stans would wait decades for the conclusion of that story and still buy a bazillion copies of it).
WHICH MEANS (SOBS), if these books are released one every 1.5 years on average... It may be quite a few years until we get our Elucien book 😭 ACOMAF came out in 2016. It would be PAST 2026 when ACOTAR6 gets released, over 10 years, until we get to see what actually comes of Elain's and Lucien's mating bond, if the above winds up bring true.
I swear, Eluciens are going to get the trophy for longest wait to see these two in their endgame, bless our patient souls 🏆
(There is always a chance the last two in the list will be in reverse order, with ACOTAR6 followed by CC4, but even if that winds up being the case, it would still be three books from now for ACOTAR6.)

Moons Over Madripoor Ch 1
“I’m sorry Daddy, I’ve been naughty”
“Wade what have I told you about coming to Hell’s Kitchen”. Matt is exhausted, it’s nearing midnight, and he’d already kicked everyone’s ass in a bar to break up a Maggia gun deal. He’s too tired to deal with any of the Merc’s mouth tonight, and he knows it’s just beginning, “and more importantly what have I told you about staying in Hell’s kitchen.” Matt adjusted his footing. Normally Wade would try to futilely sneak up on him, this time he just came up the fire escape.
“You don’t want to hear my confession? I’m sure I could find some saps to perforate with my guilt.” Wade unholstered a pistol and spun it idly, Matt could tell the gun wasn’t even loaded.
“I’m not a priest but, I don’t like you threatening thugs just to make me bend an ear.” Matt knew Wade was manipulating him, but he also knew Wade only dealt with money and bodies. His emotions were something Wade had a less than tenuous grasp on. “You going to tell me where to find a pile of bodies? You know I don’t appreciate those as favors, you’re not a cat.” Matt leaned against the stonework, Wade’s heartrate was flittering, if Matt knew any better he’d think that Wade had been crying.
“No, I haven’t been in the mood to kill anyone. Well not IN the mood but I just don’t care. Like you ever get a drumstick ice cream and just can’t even bother eating enough to get to the chocolate so you just throw it away? Or you think the taco truck sounds good to hit up but by the time you load all your mags and strap your guns on you realize you don’t even want any mexican? It’s like that” Matt knew Wade must be low. Someone so impulsive and carefree doesn’t just lose motivation for their chicanery. He must have been crying after all.
“Too languid to kill drug dealers or support any taquerias? That’s not the Deadpool I know. I suppose I can hear your confession. I have no idea what it’d pertain to since crimes against thugs and chimichangas normally top that list.” Matt was genuinely curious, this could only mean trouble. Or a headache for him, something he doesn’t need if what he heard with Tombstone was actually about to go down. “I suppose I could spare a few for you but, if anything comes up tonight I’ll need to see to that too.” Matt sat down on the ledge of the walk up, one leg off the side so he could keep an ear on the bar he was staking out.
“Of course, there’s other buildings that could use some brooding on them. Or if any of your gargoyle buddies needs back up catching pigeon shit you should get on that.” Wade jokingly toyed, a little too cavalier for someone trying to have a heartfelt conversation.
“Did you want to talk or did you come here to belittle me? Some of us feel a personal responsibility to doing the right thing.”
“Dont fucking talk about responsibility to me. You know who else does? That shit eating Spider-man. Maybe you should leave and go be responsible too, maybe Queens needs you, maybe my flat isn’t good enough, maybe we can’t take weeks to ourselves as if we don’t need it, don’t need each other.”  Wade grabbed his mouth. He’d said more than he meant. He knew that his team ups with Spidey were public but maybe Daredevil would miss his slip up or not know what he was talking about. Wade crouched down, or maybe he was slumping, his body scabbards kept his back straight, but his head falling let Daredevil know that he was exhausted as well.
“Oh, I meant I have guilt that I’m not doing enough, every person the mob hurts, hurts me too. I don’t like seeing those I care about in pain. You included Wade.” Matt knew what Wade was talking about. As if he couldn’t hear Wade’s pulse rev up like a sportbike anytime he mentioned Spider-Man. It’d been going on for months, Deadpool was so easy to get a hold of. Just mentioning the wall crawler could be there and Deadpool would show up like clockwork. It was a nice ace to have up his sleeve if a volatile situation needed combusting. Normally Wade couldn’t be relied on, but he actually was helpful the past few times. He didn’t even kill anyone the last fight they had at the docks. “Is something hurting you now?”
“Well that’s why I’m here. You ever get told you can’t do the thing you really want? Like if the priest told you that you’d prayed too much and that he wouldn’t hear another Hail Mary?” Deadpool sat down, his guns clattering on the rooftop. His legs splayed in front of him like a child sitting for a story.
“Wade church doesn’t work like that, priests are always there in times of need. I think you and I both know that.” It was a clever dig, even Matt had to admit that Wade’s wit was plenty sharp enough to earn his monicker.
“Ok well I don’t know what else you’d be into or broken up about. Maybe if they stopped sending ninjas to New York and you’d have to only fight mobsters. Yeah it’s like that, you WANT to fight ninjas because it’s exciting and fun and exhilarating and new every time,” Deadpool hugged himself, like he was overcome with joy. “but, instead New York only had mafiosos and petty crooks. Just the same boring thing you can get anywhere else.” his arms dropped and his head hung again. Matt could smell tears on Wade’s eyes, he was on the brink of crying.
“I would be more than happy if I never saw another ninja again.” Matt meant that, the city had enough issues without immortal assassin’s harrying him. The only thing ancient orders brought with them was ancient issues.
“What if it was /her/ though, what if she never showed up again because she didn’t want any part of New York and instead you had to deal with Tombstone or Bullseye.” Deadpool barked at him, his voice hoarsening. Matt faced Deadpool, had he told Wade about Elektra? Who had Matt told about her? “Oh if you’re wondering how I know about Nachos girl, literally everyone knows you two are a thing. I'd hear at poker games how people would bait her out since it would throw you off so badly just smelling her.” Was Matt really that bad when she was around? He remembered Foggy telling him she was trouble but that was just because his court cases backed up.
“I don’t know who you’re playing poker with, but I don’t ‘lose my senses’ when I smell someone like some pubescent teen.” This was making Matt uncomfortable, but Wade wasn’t noticing. He was lying down, not relaxed, but lackadaisical. Fully off guard and exposed on the rooftop.
“That makes one of us I guess. I can’t control myself, I’ve fully lost who I am trying to make someone else happy.” His voice was straining, he was holding back trying to be strong.
“Are you sure it’s what would make them happy, or what you think would make them happy?”
“I’m sure I know them and what would make them happy, we’ve spent weeks together. Working on assignments and spending long nights together.” Wade’s voice caught in his throat.
“Nights like this? You know this is just a night out, like any other. Sometimes a night is just a night.”
“Don’t be cheeky, it wasn’t some cheap rooftop in a ratty borough. These were nights in Madripoor, that place is enchanted, there’s magic in that air.” Deadpool looked off wistfully. Daredevil was sure he was imagining another night on another rooftop elsewhere. “DON’T even bother telling me I can’t make someone happy either, I can make anyone smile.”
“That’s true, I’d be lying if I said you haven’t made me crack a grin before. But true happiness isn’t made, it’s something you find and you enjoy it while it’s there.”
“I did find it, it was the sun and the moon all in one. I thought it was mine and that I had somehow cheated fate to have it.” Deadpool doffed his mask to wipe a tear from his eye. He sat up and faced Daredevil. “But, it wasn’t meant to last. You want to hear my confession now Daredevil?”
“That’s what I’m here for Wade, whatever you have to tell me, I’ll hear you.” Daredevil turned his back to the street to face Deadpool.
“I’m in love with Spider-Man and he doesn’t love me the same way.”

The Guardian view on colour-conscious casting: mixing it up can be a good thing
David Oyelowo’s casting as Javert in Les Misérables ‘is down to the BBC’s decision to cast its latest period drama in a non-literal way’.
“Images are political,” said the actor David Oyelowo, explaining why he avoids roles that perpetuate racial stereotypes. Mr Oyelowo is one of the stars of the BBC’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables, which concludes this Sunday. His character, Javert, is a police chief and austere legalist. In real life, in early 19th-century France, such a person would not have been black. Mr Oyelowo’s casting is down to the BBC’s decision to cast its latest period drama in a non-literal way. Such casting is often called “colour-blind”, but the truth is more complicated. Rather than choosing to ignore skin colour, or other physical markers of ethnicity, the producers of such dramas – like those who cast women in roles traditionally reserved for men – are more often making a deliberate choice to ditch the naturalism that underlies most casting decisions.
Last week’s announcement by the Royal Shakespeare Company that it has cast disabled actors in three upcoming productions is another move towards a more equal distribution of opportunities; this week, English National Opera also said that it will actively seek to recruit more black, Asian and minority ethnic choristers, and support young directors of colour. Television- and film-makers have been much slower than theatres to pick up on what the RSC’s Erica Whyman calls “colour-conscious” casting, which is why the BBC’s Les Misérables, and the film Mary Queen of Scots – in which the black actor Adrian Lester plays a 16th-century ambassador – are breaking new ground. Reasons for the time lag include the lack of diversity among commissioners, and the financial risks associated with cinema (a view rebutted by the success of Black Panther). But the paucity of roles for people of colour and women in so much classical drama, combined with pressure from campaigners, arguably forced publicly funded theatres to combat the discrimination that follows from naturalistic casting.
It is more than two decades since the African-American playwright August Wilson attacked colour-blind casting on the grounds that what black people need is not the chance to play white people but the chance to tell their own stories. While the current shakeup of casting in the UK is welcome, it should amplify, rather than replace, demands for a sector that is more representative overall, including of different social classes. It is shocking that the current production of Nine Night by Natasha Gordon can be hailed as the first West End play by a black British female playwright.
However, there is no one-size-fits-all. In some cases, particularly when race or some other aspect of identity is an important part of a story, naturalistic casting is an artistic choice. The BBC’s West Indian slavery epic The Long Song is a recent example, and it’s important to recognise that historical drama has a duty to history as well as drama (which is not to say that it must be realistic). Meanwhile, some campaigners object to the casting of straight or non-disabled actors in gay or disabled roles. At least where marginalised groups are concerned, they believe in like-for-like casting.
It goes without saying that diverse organisations will be better equipped to make creative decisions in this shifting territory. If public funds are going to be used to put on Shakespeare’s plays, or dramatise 19th-century European novels on TV, it is only fair that a range of actors gets the chance to be in them. As our understanding of identity and inequality becomes more complex, it is stimulating to see the dynamics of human relationships explored in different ways. Drama should open the minds of audiences, as well as opportunities for actors.

*internally screaming*
So, thanks for @ofvisitorsthefairest for asking about and letting me spill about Signs of Change a little bit.
The main idea of SoC is that it’s the formation of the (Western) Zodiac as a super-team of people who eventually become immortal. They do start out mortal, with their own parents and siblings, but they are soon chosen by gods and made immortal. The main plotline of the story is as cultures grow and clash, the Zodiac are meant to fight one another like overpowered chess pieces as the different pantheons clash along with their cultures to keep their dominance. (Oof, now I’m not sure how I’m going to handle Judeo-Christian religions - maybe they stay immortal, but they fade in power as the gods did) They get their Zodiac moniker (and their individual signs) when the different pantheons come together and recognize that they’re no longer the powerhouses they used to be (as the world comes into the “modern” age) and the Signs are allowed to be as they please. They part ways for a while, but the end of the saga comes when they find each other once again and settle down together.
But I’m having trouble getting started with it since I’m starting back in Ye Olde Classic Days (like the ancient days) and having to have all the people come together.
The basic ideas I have for the characters so far are:
Aries: Southern American. Incan/Mayan/Aztec? Not really sure. SHORT. Wields a bullwhip and some sort of knife
Taurus: Mongolian. Dark hair, green eyes. Stubborn. (They’re one of the ones I did the ask on). Gender fluid, pansexual. Uses a blunt force weapon like a mace or a bat. They were Turkish at one point, I think, and I think I had named them Yagmur (which, as I found it, is pronounced “yah-moor”, I think - it’s a feminine name and I had made them female at that point in development)
Gemini: Twins. Literally, Victoria (brown hair and green eyes) and Elizabeth (blonde hair and blue eyes). They’re from somewhere in Britain (or pre-Britain, think the tribes before the Romans got there. Would be cool if they could interact with Boudicca, if everything works out) Victoria runs with the punk crowd towards modern history, and Elizabeth tends to stray more posh.
Cancer: Irish. Big, reddish hair (no, stop it, she’s not Merida). Trans woman, lesbian
Leo: Ethiopia? Nigeria? Libya? Tunisia? Algeria? (The last three are sort of where Carthage was in the ancient world unless I’m wrong, and Queen Dido is another awesome ancient figure that it would be cool to include). She becomes a fashion designer/model/icon in the modern day
Virgo: Marie! (She’s the other one I did for my ask) French, very prototypical blonde hair blue eyes. Can do parkour and is especially skilled with throwing knives. Tends to be the one that the other signs come to for relationship/love/sex advice, but her real advice is just “tell them how you feel” and when she’s asked how she’s so good it’s just “luck, really.”
Libra: MAAAAAAGIC. Literally she’s the “mage” of the group. Not sure of her origins yet. She’s got white hair and violet eyes (pale, though, not super dark, and I swear I thought of this before I knew of the A Song of Ice and Fire series/GOT show). Has a weapon that ties into her magic but she can also use for melee if she “overheats” her magic. (Has narcolepsy?)
Scorpio: Middle-Eastern, probably Iranian. Dark hair, fuchsia/deep purple-red eyes. Eventually (i.e. once the team assembles) she’s going to wield a khopesh, I think, because of how the sword resembles a scorpion’s tail. Has to be once the team has assembled or once she has personally gone through Egypt since khopeshes (is that how you make that plural?) are Egyptian. (There will also be a lot of weapon cross-over with other Zodiac characters as well).
Sagittarius (Oh, hey, that’s my sign!): She’s an archer of some sort. Demi-ace or grey-ace, not sure, and pansexual. At first I had her as Ancient Greek, or Roman, but they felt too easy. Then there was “The Eagle Hunter,” which is about a Kazakh girl training to become an eagle hunter, but I’m still not super sure where she’s going to hail from. I might even take a closer look at Native North American people since I know some of them hunted with bows.
Capricorn: She hails from India! At one point she wielded a staff, fun fact. She’s a polyglot and has a propensity for learning (especially literature), fuzzy sweaters, and general coziness. Likes warm drinks (esp. fall-flavored drinks, although she won’t turn down a peppermint mocha or latte or hot chocolate), and piles blankets on herself to go to sleep. Lesbian.
Aquarius: I’m still doing research into Pacific Islanders and Polynesians to better understand their cultures (since they're all fascinating and I want to choose them all but she can only be raised in one culture). Lives to be around the ocean. Passionate mathematician and physicist (likes all the sciences but those are her favorites). Will, at one point in the story, have a Samoyed and will, at another point, dye the end of her hair teal.
Pisces: She is Japanese! I at one point named her Sakura but wasn’t sure of the name. She will, at one point in the story, wield sais (fun fact, they’re the original weapons I envisioned for her). Also a polyglot (like Capricorn, they’re study buddies), she enjoys history and religious studies. She has brown eyes and black hair somewhere between her chin and her shoulders. When she was mortal she had an older brother (who in one writing either was in the military or was going to become a samurai, I can’t remember).
So! Info dump, I know, but I’d love to hear people’s thoughts/ideas.
This is also like one of the ideas I’ve had the longest (and the most sustained interest in getting published) and it’s really precious to me.

Unova Elite Four
The Unova Elite Four is considered to be one of the toughest in the world, with all four Elites boasting a victory rate of above 90% and over four years experience in their respective positions. They all utilise wildly diverse battle styles, which requires the challenger to be flexible in order to triumph over all of them. This diversity, combined with the leniency of the Unovan Battle Code and the fact that each Elite pushes it to its limits, renders them a brutal and uncompromising set of opponents. Alder’s long reign as Champion is mostly attributed to the success of the Elite Four; because so few could surpass them, Alder was rarely forced to defend his title.
Shauntal
Shauntal is famous in the battle industry for her adaptability. Having trained with many different type specialists all over the world, she has learnt to perfect defensive, offensive and status-led plays, able either to sweep or to play the long game depending on her opponent’s weaknesses. Of the four Elites, she has the widest choice of pokémon to assemble her team from, bearing eleven highly-trained ghosts capable of changing strategies whenever an initial plan fails. Her unpredictability stumps challengers who prefer to plan their plays in advance (Cheren failed to beat her for this exact reason) but can sometimes leave her exposed. When she chooses the wrong strategy and has to swap, she becomes vulnerable.
Most Notable Pokémon
Cofagrigus - Mostly used in longer plays, this is one of her most iconic partners. Typically, it will obscure the field with Haze, then proceed to extend and retract its long, shadow-like arms so that the foe can only see dark shapes moving within the fog. As the opponent’s paranoia builds, the cofagrigus may inflict them with poison or burns, trip them with low-lying Dark Pulses, or wear them down with broad swathes of Ominous Wind (never Shadow Ball or other projectiles, as they would reveal the cofagrigus’s location within the fog). In recent years, Shauntal has combined the Haze Strategy with use of Double Team, so as to make it even harder for the opponent to track the cofagrigus’s position.
Although rarely used offensively due to its slowness, Shauntal’s cofagrigus has been known to seize hold of smaller opponents, trap them inside itself and use Curse, forcing them to share in the self-inflicted damage. This is extremely painful. Shauntal’s first use of this strategy provoked a heated debate as to whether it should be banned or not, but it was eventually declared to be legal.
Chandelure - It compensates for its lack of dodging ability with a masterful, hair-trigger command of Protect. Moreover, it will often use Fire Spin to shroud itself in a fire vortex, as this activates its Flash Fire ability and prevents opponents from getting too close. Because both Fire Spin and Protect are difficult to maintain over long periods, it is somewhat of a firework pokémon, powerful for a time but quick to burn out. It boasts an array of hard-hitting special moves, but is most well known for its explosive use of Inferno. If the foe can survive the first few minutes on the field with this pokémon, it becomes far easier to take down. But making it through the first onslaught is no easy feat.
Froslass - Trained to be fast above all else, Shauntal’s frosslass is known for her relentlessness. Her moves lack the power of the chandelure’s, but by summoning repeated, unceasing hail, wrestling the opponent back with Icy Wind and even mentally restraining them with Telekinesis, she wears foes out by use of fairly simple, low-effort techniques. If that fails, she drags them down with Destiny Bond. Because of her perceived viciousness, commentators have taken to calling her ‘Ice Queen’, though her real name is Dysnomia.
Marshal
Marshal is the most conventional trainer of the four. His style is not particularly different from that of most fighting-type specialists - a practical, head-on approach that prizes high damage above all else. Nevertheless, he provides an earthy balance to his deceptive colleagues and has the most classically powerful team, always using the same six in official matches. Having been in the position for seven years, he is the longest-serving member of the Unova Elite Four.
Most Notable Pokémon
Mienshao - Revered for her speed, reflexes and preference to trip up opponents by slapping them hard in the ankles, she attacks in a way typical of the species. The one atypical technique she uses is the evoking of sunlight on the battlefield. As Marshal spent much of his early life training abroad in hot countries, his pokémon are perfectly used to fighting at full capacity in searing heat. The same cannot be said for most of his opponents’ teams.
Sawk - Marshal’s sawk has been trained extensively to fight with his feet. As a sawk’s toes are almost as dexterous as its fingers, Marshal’s can wrench opponents to the floor after kicking them and hold them there while stamping down with the other foot. As Marshal’s sawk used to be wild, training him to attack using non-melee methods is difficult, so he mostly fights hand-to-hand. Some would expect this to be a limitation, but his reflexes are so formidably quick that it is anything but.
Grimsley
Grimsley’s style is notorious for its cleverness. He is widely considered to be one of the most cunning trainers in the industry, adept at targeting blind spots, misleading the opponent and completely disorientating their pokémon. Almost all of his pokémon are trained in taunting (riling the opponent to the point that it starts blindly attacking), and several of them combine the technique with Countering to create a risky strategy known as the Offensive Taunt (or, more archaically, as Foul Play).
Grimsley is also known for being unorthodox. He would rather win savagely than lose gracefully, so is not above directing his pokémon to yank tails, poke eyes or spit in faces if it grants him the slightest advantage. Purists find him distasteful. The general public can’t get enough of him.
Most Notable Pokémon
Liepard - As his ace, his liepard features in virtually all of his matches. She is his best taunter, considered by many to be the most accomplished taunter in contemporary battle, and has been thoroughly trained in both dodging and Protect usage. She defeats foes by riling them, confusing them, paralysing them, then biting and slashing at vunerable areas such as the neck and legs. Evasion is the cornerstone of her strategy, as she can only withstand limited hits, but she is an unexpected nightmare for many challengers. People go in worrying about the hydreigon, only to discover they can’t land a single hit on the liepard.
She is also excellent at false signalling, a technique that involves ‘playing dead’, waiting until the last few seconds before being delcared unfit for battle, then launching oneself at the opponent to deliver a surprise attack. Despite the fact that he is famed for this strategy, people still fall for it. His liepard is so attuned to him that she often knows when to false signal without being instructed.
Hydreigon - Grimsley is one of few hydreigon users in the battle industry and the only one that isn’t a dragon specialist. Out of concern that people will underestimate how dangerous raising the species can be, he often doesn’t use his in televised matches. Those lucky enough to have seen her fight note how Grimsley capitalises on intimidation tactics while commanding her. He encourages her to vocalise at the beginning of matches, letting out harsh, eerie roars that set the foe on edge before the battle has even begun. Once it commences, however, the strategy simplifies: hit, and hit hard.
Absol - As absols train very much like psychic types, Grimsley’s provides a mellow contrast to the rest of his team. While not the fastest, the absol has a developed precognitive sense that allows him to sense impending attacks before they occur, and to launch his own into the foe’s path. Maintaining the focus required for precognition is no easy feat in the heat of battle, especially not while attacking, so he is careful only to strike when confident that the blow will do severe damage. Watching him battle is a surreal experience - his movements look dreamlike and out of sync, and he sometimes does things that make no sense until a few minutes later in the match. Even Grimsley is often unclear on his absol’s intentions, but he trusts him to take the best course of action, never disrupting his focus by shouting out commands.
Caitlin
Caitlin is the most recent addition to the Unova Elite Four, but her sweetly cruel style fits perfectly with the rest of the League. Owing to her contest experience and her years in the Battle Castle (a facility where elegance is esteemed), Caitlin’s pokémon are more than just fighters - they are performers. Her main strategy is to entice the foe with beautiful displays, holding back on doing proper damage so that they are lured, despite themselves, into a false sense of security. She recognises that foes fight best when they feel at risk, so makes it her strategy to appear non-offensive, to almost ‘seduce’ them into thinking she means no harm. Then, once they are at their most captivated and confused, she strikes.
Most Notable Pokémon
Gothitelle - Caitlin’s gothitelle is excellent at seduction. Her most famous technique is the Stockholm strategy; she repeatedly hurts her opponents via Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball and Psychic only to revitalise them with Heal Pulse a moment later. The sheer dissonance of the technique wears the foe down; because it is so unlike what they usually experience on the battlefield, it disorientates them, makes them confused and unsure of how to react. This leaves them vulnerable.
Sigilyph - Her sigilyph is less scheming, but every bit as cruel. She combines the use of heavy Gravity with Toxic, forcing the foe to the ground while waiting for the poison to eat away at them. She is also excellent at long-range use of Mirror Coat, favouring the technique of summoning a barrier directly in front of the foe so that their released move blows up in their face.

Ookaay. I’m fine with NPC name change, really. But if you want to change the name, CHANGE IT ALL.
Edit: Add the original names. The original name might be messier than first localization, or dev too lazy to think the name of random NPC. Most of them using Chinese name or chinese-spelled-western name (idk what it called).  Well... MiraLand continent itself is based on China/East Asia... although contradict with each Nation characteristic, using Chinese name is make sense somehow... Turns out, for example, just because Pigeon is based on (Nikki’s real world) Europe old times does not means the citizen is (Nikki’s real world) European and have (Nikki’s real world) European style name.... (although some Pigeon character did have European (fantasy) name...)
When I played Nikki first time, I actually want to rant about the NPCs name.
The Cloud Empire is based East Asia, of course it normal for them to have Chinese-like name. BUT LUNAR?
Apple Federal seems like usual modern city, and very similar with Nikki’s world (China), but that doesn't guarantee they will have Chinese name, or even western-like name... BUT Yvette AND KIKI?? (I actually have a bit difficulty remember some NPC names because their name is sooooo common. Timi, Kimi, Kiki, Vivi, Hi... ka, Yasu, Aron, Toto, Aiko (4 letters)... That’s why I’m happy about the change, at first...) It feels like the parent doesn't think much for the elder sister (or daughter) :’)
Both Yoko and Bobo are weird too. And the Lilith Kingdom Queen’s name, Nanari also weird if you think that Lilith is based on western fairy tale. Nanari, Kaze, Hika, Yasu, and Yoko sounds a bit Japanese.. and then you have ROYCE. Hiki’s new name Neva kinda match with the country, but Bobo... unless it turns out Yoko/Bobo is half Cloud I might frown at it too... not because it sounds stupid, but because context.
It’s really too bad I don’t have any information about the original name (except for Nikki (Nuan), Momo (Mumu), and Lunar (Ling Luo). The original name might be messier than the first localization tho...
Btw I found an interesting comment regarding the name > here.
Edit:
Nikki is 暖暖 Nuǎn nuǎn. (Warm 2x)
Momo is 大喵 Dà miāo. (LOL IT MEANS BIG MEOW HAHAHA)
Nina/Yoyo is 优优 Yōu yōu. (Excellent 2x)
Bobo or 啵啵 Bō bō, is her actual name. I think her name is Bo bo because > Nuan Nuan, You You, Mo mo? (Don’t have meaning? Or an onomatopoeia of boiling water)
Lunar is 綾羅 Líng luó. (Silk Design??)
Kimi is 海樱  Hǎi yīng (!!). (Sea (of?) Cherry??)
Joe is 乔布朗尼 Qiáo bùlǎng ní. (Google translate it as Joe Brownie lol)

Nidhogg is 尼德霍格 Ní dé huò gé.
Yasu/Yvette is 洁洁云 Jié jié yún. (Clean Clean Cloud, lol)
(Late King) Sayet is .... (idk).
(Queen) Nanari is 娜娜莉 Nà nà lì. (Maybe the best is Nunnally? It’s Graceful 2x Jasmine)
Royce is 罗伊斯 Luō yī sī. (Royce)
Neva/Hika is 黑卡 Hēi kǎ (WHAT THEN WHY NEVA). (Black Card)
Ace is 艾思  Ài sī (Ace? Ice?).

Vivi is 薇雅  Wēi yǎ.
Sofia is 索菲亚 Suǒ fēi yà.
Timi is 小满  Xiǎo mǎn.
Aron is 奥萝 Ào luó.
Kaze/Kaja is 立风 Lì fēng (there’s ‘wind’ character, the reason for ‘kaze’?).
(Manager) Lisa is 伊莎 Yī shā.
Aiko/Annabel is  小羊  Xiǎo yáng (lamb). (They should named her Mary)
Haru/Bai Jin Jin is 白锦锦 Bái jǐn jǐn (White Brocade 2x)
Saki/Zhong Li Zi is 钟离梓  Zhōng lí zǐ

Through the Lens
Part 6
“Who the fuck is Michael Hastings?” You asked, after finally making your way through the sea of flashes and invasive questions. “You have enough history with him that you know his name?”
The limo had blacked out windows and at least muffled the cries of ‘how long have you been dating’ and ‘how does it feel to be dating one of the most beautiful women in the world.’ JJ inhaled hard, her breath rattling in her chest. She combed her hands through her hair as she sat back in her seat and told the driver he could start leaving.
“Yes,” she said. “His name is Michael Hastings. He’s an asshole paparazzi that has basically been stalking me ever since I broke out into the field.”
How could someone do that? How could someone invade every moment of another person’s life and feel okay with it enough to put their head on the pillow at night?
“So he’s been following you for a few years now? And you can’t call the cops on him?” You asked.
JJ shook her head and moved to your end of the limo, snuggling into you. “No, I’ve tried-“
“That doesn’t make any sense!” If someone was stalking your girlfriend there had to be a way to get him to fuck off.
“It doesn’t make any sense, but it’s true.”
“How?”
“Because he doesn’t get close to me so he doesn’t pose a physical threat and given that he’s never really approached me, in the eyes of the law, there’s no reason to believe that he would physically harm me.”
What?! “So you’re saying that you need to be physically harmed or threatened in order to get him away from you? That taking pictures at a camera’s length isn’t equally as invasive? What the fuck is that about?” Normally, you weren’t an angry person, but you really liked JJ; just because she was a model didn’t mean that she deserved to have her privacy invaded all the time.
On the way back to JJ’s apartment, she told you more about her relationship with Kate – how it was everything she’d ever imagined in a relationship, but was ruined by the invasiveness of the paparazzi, specifically Michael Hastings. He’d taken photo after photo from far enough away that it wasn’t illegal and left the two feeling like they had nothing to themselves anymore. The relationship was strained to the point where Kate couldn’t take it anymore, and she left, though she loved JJ more than almost anything else in the world. “That’s why I’m so afraid,” she started.
JJ’s apartment complex was in sight, and it was already swarmed with paparazzi. “Shit!” She called Spencer. “Spence, Y/N and I need a place to escape. The paparazzi are swarmed outside my apartment. Could we come by your place for a while?”
Her eyes darted all around the car, horrified at the hands that were smacking against the windows and the screams the pervaded the interior. “Thanks, Spence. We really appreciate it.”
She hung up the phone and told the driver to gun it to Spencer’s address. “He’s going to let us crash with him for a few days until this dies down a bit.”
“You sure he’s okay with that?”
She nodded. “Luke is there too; he said they are prepared for people to out them, so it’s okay.”
This was not how things should be. Spencer and Luke shouldn’t have to be outed because you both needed a place to lay low because you were outed. It was bullshit. You loved what you did and you wanted to be with JJ, but the side effects of fame were something you’d never truly understood until this point in your life.
Within five minutes, the driver dropped you off at Spencer’s place so you could make your way up to his apartment with your luggage. “What the hell happened?” He asked the moment you entered his apartment. Luke came out of the shadows to grab your bags and help you inside, telling you how sorry he was that the paparazzi sucked.
“Michael Hastings broke the news,” JJ said. Her eyes bore into Spencer and she fell into his arms. “I can’t do this again, Spence. I lost Kate, I can’t…”
More than anything, you wanted to tell her that she wasn’t going to lose you too, but how could you, when you’d never been violated like this before. Spencer’s grip tightened around her small frame, one hand cradling her neck while the other rubbed at her back. “I fucking hate that guy,” he said matter-of-factly.
“Me too.”
“Let’s get you both settled in,” Luke said.
Both you and JJ were more than grateful for Spencer and Luke’s hospitality, but you hated the fact that you couldn’t even go home because for some reason people cared about who JJ was dating.
---
Over the course of the next couple of days, it seemed like the crowd of paparazzi on the ground floor only increased in size. “I don’t get it,” you laughed. “Why do people care if we’re doing each other?”
“Because we live in a sex-obsessed world,” Spencer said as he passed the living room. “Personally, I think that both of you should just do an exclusive. With someone or just online. Take the power away from the media and do it yourself since it’s going to happen anyway.”
You’d been tossing that idea back and forth in your minds since you arrived at Spencer’s place. Your phone buzzed in your pocket; it was Luke being a dork and saying hi from across the room. “Really?”
“Yup,” he laughed.
When you looked back down, you were met with something you never expected – even now. “Really?”
“What?” JJ asked. She took the phone from your hands and stared in horror at the screen. It was a picture of you in your robe from just hours before, and the robe was opened enough that your breasts were exposed. It was all over the Internet and the tabloids. “Baby, I’m so sorry!” The tears swelled in her eyes as she watched the embarrassment wash over you.
“Hastings took this picture,” you said softly as you closed your arms around yourself. “He took this from the building across the street.” The words could barely leave you. You felt weak. “I need a breather.” Without thinking, you bolted up from the couch and grabbed your coat, wrapping it tightly around you.
“Where are you going?” JJ asked sadly. In her eyes you saw the wave of sadness. You wanted to run to her. You wanted to tell her it would be okay. But you felt so debased and you needed time to breathe. “Y/N-“
“I need to decompress,” you said. “I’m sorry. Spencer, Luke, thank you so much for what you’ve done for us. I can never make it up to you.”
Before you could watch her cry, you turned and ran out of the apartment, shielding yourself from the paparazzi as you hailed a cab in an attempt to return home. Truly, you’d underestimated the effect the paparazzi could have on you. Through the lens, you’d caught different aspects of people they’d never known existed, but that had all been consensual. Now, you were on the other end, desecrated by the very object you’d built your life around –the one that had brought you to JJ in the first place. There was something poetic about it. The camera brought you together, and the camera tore you apart.

Sword????......SWORD!
Frosthorn
Wielded once upon a time by Queen Mirabella the fearsome pirate of the northern seas, this short sword is an ideal off hand weapon, capable or crippling or slaying an opponent with equal ease!
Frost-thorn is a +1 frost burst short sword (+1d6 cold damage, and 2d10 cold on a crit), in addition it grants the wielder +1 AC if held in the off hand, as its barbs make for ideal parrying. Special: on a successful critical hit, the sword unleashes a hail of icy shards causing 2d10 cold damage in a 5ft radius and one of two effects depending on the rotation of the skull on the hilt. If the skull faces up: all damaged opponents must make a reflex save or gain the grappled condition as the shards pin them to nearby surfaces; if it faces down, they must make a fortitude save or gain poisoned condition as the ice melts unleashing its hidden poison into their veins. The save DC is 15 and the effect lasts for 1d4 rounds.

WEEK TWENTY (Mar 16 - Mar 23)
MELBOURNE, VIC, AUS // HONOLULU, OAHU, HI
Oh, how these past twenty weeks have flown by! With only a few days left in Melbourne, the fact that we'd be leaving Australia for good this time was finally starting to sink in. We squeezed in time on Thursday evening to have some beers and watch Andy and Elisa's band practice at their house in Fitzroy. On Friday, we spent the morning doing laundry and cleaning in preparation of our imminent move-out. Once the laundry was hung and dry, we took an hour walk down Lygon Street for dinner at "Grill'd" in Carlton. It was such a beautiful night, so after dinner we forged onwards another thirty minutes through the bustling CBD and Chinatown to snap a photo of the street sign at an alleyway named AC/DC Lane (the rock group hailed from Australia). The city is known for harboring chic restaurants and hip nightclubs amongst its numerous mural-ed alleyways, and we wandered through several before catching the tram back home.
Our last Saturday in Melbourne was a busy one since we had many people left to see. We started the morning off heading to Cremorne for brunch at warehouse-turned-restaurant "Denis the Menace" with Oscar and Maddie. After saying our goodbyes, we hopped on the train to Queen Victoria Markets for some last minute souvenir shopping. An hour or so later, we made it back home to Brunswick East to drop off our purchases and change clothes since we had plans to meet with Andy and Elisa at their place in Fitzroy by 3:30pm. Just a short walk to the corner of their block on Kerr and Brunswick Street is "Evelyn Hotel"-- a bottle shop, music venue, and pub with an outdoor parklette. We bought a bottle of Prosecco at the "Evelyn Hotel" bottleO, and the staff kindly placed it on ice and provided us with four champagne flutes. A few rounds later, we caught a ride to an outdoor venue called The Boathouse at "Fairfield Amphitheater" right on the Yarra River to dance to local DJ's. It was a warm summer evening and perfect weather for our last big night out. The event ended at 9:00pm, and we temporarily split ways after flagging down a ride to Collingwood to meet up with Cole at "The Bendigo Hotel." Cole had decided last-minute to make his way down to Melbourne from Brisbane, so we wanted one last goodbye with him before we left Australia. Sally and Steve joined us, and we all shared some beers on the back patio before eventually saying g'bye to Cole and heading to "Joey Smalls" in Brunswick East to rendezvous with our original group (with Steve and Sally in tow). Andy and Elisa's pal Josh was DJing, so we continued to boogie the night away until the wee hours of the morning. After many hugs and heartfelt goodbyes, we walked thirty minutes home and knew we would miss all our new friends dearly.
On our way home to the U.S. mainland, we planned to make a short pit-stop on the island of Oahu in Hawai'i to break up the fourteen hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. We arrived at Honolulu International Airport after a nine hour flight (crossing the International Date Line midway for a trip to the past) and dropped our bags off at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel. Since our check-in wasn't for another few hours, we strolled a block down the road to nap in the shade of a palm tree on world-famous Kuhio Beach. After grabbing a quick lunch at the kitschy 50's diner "Rock Island Cafe," we proceeded back to the hotel concierge to finalize our check-in and discovered we had been upgraded to a room with an ocean view! By this point, the jet-lag was catching up with us, so we laid down for another quick nap, and then spent the rest of the afternoon poolside. The next two days were spent leisurely swimming and laying out at either Kuhio Beach or the Hilton pool. Talk about a relaxing transition back to U.S. life! One night as we gathered with other beach-goers on the sand to gaze upon a fiery sunset over the Pacific, we noticed a free hula show with dancers accompanied by a traditional Hawaiian music band. Their stage was set up underneath a massive Banyan tree and stood surrounded by flaming tiki torches. As the music drifted out over the crowd, it blended seamlessly with the crashing waves behind us and the chorus of tropical birds singing high in the Banyan above. In the mood for fish, we made dinner reservations for "Tiki's Grill & Bar" at sunset on our last night on the island. The view was spectacular and the food was great as well. As we checked out the next morning, we asked the bellmen to hail us a cab ride to the airport. By sheer coincidence, there happened to be a limousine chauffeur killing some time until his next booking who offered to take us for the same price as a taxi. We left the hotel like rockstars and said our last "Aloha" to Waikiki. Not a bad way to end our five month journey!
Back in California now, we are happy to be reunited amongst family and friends, but miss Australia and our life on the road greatly. The beautiful places we visited and the many friends we made abroad will hold a special place in our hearts and memories forever. Now to start saving for and planning our next expedition….

'Outstanding', 'Excellent' - Lots of QPR fans hail ace's FA Cup performance
Queens Park Rangers booked their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over fellow Championship side Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.
QPR had less of the ball on the afternoon, but managed 10 shots on target during what was a watchable game in the English capital.
The R’s opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and it came from 20-year-old forward Aramide Oteh, who registered from the penalty spot.
Oteh signed a new three-year deal with QPR during the summer and has featured on two occasions in the Championship this season.
The strike against Leeds proved to be his second goal for the QPR first team.
It would be fair to say that the QPR supporters were pleased with what they saw from the attacker, with many taking to social media to praise his performance.
A selection of the Twitter reaction from the club’s fans can be seen below:
Oteh needs more game time, raw talent that needs to play man’s football. Has to be the replacement for Wells instead of Smith. Bright also raw and dangerous and a real talent. Impressed with Hall and hope he can stay fit. Get Bidwell and Pawel’s contracts sorted. #QPR

@QPR I think the energy from Kakay, Bright-Samual and Oteh lifted the whole team there. Outworked Leeds all over. Great win! #Qpr

Episode 93 : (for small values of infinity)
"All that happy, 'let's be friends' shit? Yo, this is the opposite."
- Konny Kon
As usual, we pay tribute to J Dilla, Big L, and Big Pun this month, but also two giants from a previous generation who both made a massive impact on Hip-Hop; Clyde Stubblefield and David Axelrod, who both passed in the last few weeks. Besides that, we have some great recent tracks from Manchester, some US classics and a few tracks that may have passed you by! Let's get it going...
Twitter : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
D.I.T.C. : Best Behavior (Showbiz Remix #2)
From "The Remix Project", we go heavy in multiple ways right from the jump. Big Pun may not have been a charter member of D.I.T.C, but Fat Joe certainly is, and it's via Joe that we end up with this connection to one of the fiercest MCs of all time. One verse each over this Showbiz beat which somehow manages to be even darker than the excellent Amed-produced original.
David McCallum : The Edge
I'd imagine a good number of you thought this was about to be an entirely different record :) This track from the "Music: A Bit More Of Me" album is definitely the most famous track by the actor/musician David McCallum, and one of the most well-recognised by the producer, the brilliant David Axelrod, who passed away this month. That intro is just a monster.
Big L & Jay-Z : Freestyle
Given the origin and the content, I hope you can excuse the sound quality! This is one of the great freestyle sessions of all time, with the then-rising Big L and Jay-Z trading serious bars over the beat for Miilkbone's "Keep It Real"; as it turns out, they'd already battled off-mic earlier the same night! While that clash is lost to folklore, it's good to have this back-and-forth preserved for posterity, thanks to Stretch & Bobbito.
Ras Kass : Soul On Ice (Remix)
Diamond D remixes the title track from Ras' debut, blessing Ras with a David Axelrod-sampling instrumental that is probably better known than the original. Ras is in the political lyrical mode many people would associate him with here, but as always managed to blend that with just vicious battle lines. "The waterproof MC, you ain't wettin' me/You need to stop rapping and start robbing banks like Steady B"? *Ouch*...
SoundSci : The Remedy (Jonny Cuba Remix)
This one has just missed the cut a few times but it fit nicely here! Super relaxed vibe all the way through on this closing track from the "Dig For Victory" EP.
James Brown : Funky Drummer (Parts 1 & 2)
We join this track about a minute and a half in - the full track is seven minutes long. At 19:25 though, one of the most famous, sampled, re-used, re-formulated pieces of audio of all time appears to grace our eardrums. Clyde Stubblefield claimed to not particularly like this song as a whole all that much, but these few seconds of solo drumming when he was given his shine have immortalised it - and him.
[Jay Dee] Slum Village : Climax (Instrumental)
Easily one of my favourite Dilla beats, from the "Fantastic, Vol.2" album - a fantastic blend of samples and that clap on the two and four are perfectly crisp and clean.
Busta Rhymes : Genesis
Busta was one of those MCs who caught on to J Dilla relatively early and the two artists combined for some excellent tracks over the years. On "Genesis", Busta's fifth album, Dilla contributed this title track and "Make It Hurt", which sounds like it was done by a completely different producer, which just goes to show his versatility.
Gang Starr : Mass Appeal
It just seemed to go well with the Busta record, and it's a great single, taken from the "Hard To Earn" LP. What you might not know about it is that DJ Premier essentially put the beat together as a bit of a mickey take! The track is supposed to sound like catchy elevator music, in keeping with the lyrical theme of rappers simplifying their material for a popular audience - but it just sounds so good!
Souls of Mischief : 93 Til Infinity (Remix)
Do I prefer this to the original? Absolutely not - however, that doesn't mean it's not a quality track in its own right. If you listen carefully, you'll hear that it's an actual re-record, with the lyrics being very slighly different and the delivery also tweaked to better fit this alternative beat by A-Plus. The easiest place to find this is on the original 12" single, though it has been released by itself as well.
Masta Ace Incorporated : Saturday Night Live (L.A. Jay Remix)
Staying in '93 for a remix of a track from the "SlaughtaHouse" album - an LP notable for largely being a parody which a lot of people either took literally or assumed wasn't about them! This particular track has its own dark humour, showing about how live a Saturday night can actually get, and feaures Uneek, Eyce, and Lord Digga on the mic. L.A. Jay from the Pharcyde crew rocks the same sample heard on Gang Starr's "Jazz Music" for a beat that manages to surpass the album version!
Pete Rock : Dilla Bounce (R.I.P)
A fitting instrumental to include this month. Dilla came up idolising the work of Pete Rock, so it's poetic that after his passing (as in life), Pete pays respect to him in return. I feel that "Petestrumentals 2" may follow the same path as its predecessor - underrated on release, and retrospectively hailed as a classic.
Run The Jewels ft. Joi : Down
The "RTJ3" album came out on Christmas Day and ensured that we all got at least one present :) This was the opener and a worthy one - a look back at Killer Mike and El-P's pasts, and a look forward to where they plan to go. There's a kind of warmness to the beat which isn't a word I'd usually use to describe an El-P track, but it envelops your ears and draws you in to focus on the lyrics.
Ellis Meade : Kings & Queens
Ellis was kind enough to send me a copy of this a few months back and I finally found a good place to showcase it in a mix. The flow is crazy over a double-timed, almost southern-style Pro P beat. Another win for the Room 2 Records crew!
Chamillionaire : You Gotta Love Me
"Mayn, let the truth free". That shout-out to the then-incarcerated Pimp C firmly dates this one, a longtime headphone favourite for me finally making it onto the show! From the DJ Whoo Kid (hence the annoying adlibs) collaboration mixtape "The Truth", Cham focuses his anger on Mike Jones ("who?", you may now ask?) - that beef lasted for several years. I haven't been able to find out who produced this but that sped-up vocal sample is a serious earworm!
Don Jagwarr : The Cure
I've had this one hanging around for a long while, not sure it's everyone's speed but it fit tempo-wise into this selection and I think was a reasonable follow-up to the soul sample in the previous track. Don Jagwarr is almost certainly best known to most as the guest on Ice Cube's "Wicked", but he did have his old LP, "Faded", from which this track is drawn. The beat and hook are based around a replay of Diana Ross' "Love Hangover", which is a chilled backing for Jagwarr to spin his tale over.
Jake One : Oh Lord
We go back to the gospel-themed "#PrayerHandsEmoji" beat tape for this instrumental, a perfect warm-up for this month's closer...
Children of Zeus : Crown
An anthem already (wow, alliteration)! Tyler Daly goes straight rhymes alongside the always-ready Konny Kon over a no-drums track based around a stirring gospel sample; both MCs turn it out in fine style! Absolutely huge track from the "Two Syllables, Volume Thirteen" compilation and one that deserves as much shine as possible - on top of everything else, it also has one of the best videos I've seen in ages, so no excuse not to share and share again!
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!
