So, how rare ARE Ford's extra fingers, anyway?
I'm not gonna lie, at first I was skeptical of Ford's claims that the Weirdness Magnetism had an effect on him. Like, yeah, the whole having six fingers thing isn't exactly common, but it's a naturally-occurring event. Stan describes it as a birth defect, and there doesn't seem to be a noticeably great number of people with those in Gravity Falls. It wouldn't be all that farfetched for Ford to think he was just Built Different, for like, at least 7 reasons, but then you start actually thinking about it.
Polydactyly isn't exactly common. Approximately 1 in 1,000 babies are born with some form of polydactyly. While it's true that postaxial polydactyly (extra digit is past the pinkie) is the most common form, which is shown to be the kind Ford has in the x-ray at the beginning of AToTS, there are several other extreme circumstances.
Tumblr media
Extra digits in polydactyly aren't usually found on all limbs. It can occur on hands and feet (and Alex has confirmed that Ford does, indeed, have six toes on both feet) but rarely does it occur on both feet, or both hands, much less both hands and both feet. And even when it does occur more than once on one person, the extra digits aren't usually fully-formed. Oftentimes they don't even have bones. When they do have bones, they're usually much smaller, or barely opposable (if they have joints at all). When they're big enough to be maneuverable, they usually interfere with the structure of the hands/feet in negative ways. All this means that an extra finger or toe which doesn't direly require a surgery to remove the extra digit within the first year or two of life is incredibly uncommon.
And let's remember: that's just for one extra digit. Ford has four.
For Ford to have fully functional polydactyly on both hands and both feet, to the point where it's basically impossible to tell which one is finger x without x-rays... the odds of that are astronomically unlikely. Never-before-recorded, one in a kazillion, borderline medically unfathomable sort of rare.
I think I do believe the Weirdness Magnetism could've affected Ford, actually.

Everyone's talking about the part of Dean's prayer from the 15x09 script where he says he wanted Cas to stay and over here I'm living for this part of the dialogue: "When mom died, I blamed myself. Plenty. But even then, I had plenty left to go around. So I put what I couldn’t take on you." -- not that it's right what he did (and he knows it) but if that doesn't prove to anyone right there how Dean really feels, not sure anything else will. It's so blatant.
I have been screaming it for so long now, that the 15x09 prayer was meant to be Dean's version of the confession, that Berens (and the show) purposely did all of those parallels, and it's nice to see it confirmed by a line like this that he wrote at some point.
To me, this line is an earmark of a partnership. And I'm not talking about a working partnership, or a family partnership (like Dean and Sam for example), and or even a friendship partnership. This is something that tends to be a dynamic of another type of partnership altogether. The wording is super specific (I see you, Berens) and imho it's showing exactly how it was originally intended.
They always say that a person tends to unleash their crap and mistreat those they love more than any other person because they figure (and hope) that at the end of it, that person is still going to be there, that they will stay and won't leave. Again, not saying it's right at all, but it does sometimes happen. So the wording of "So I put what I couldn't take on you" shows that Dean trusted Cas enough and felt comfortable enough in their relationship at that point to take on what he couldn't. While it's blame for Mary's death that he's talking about, the lines before it show that Dean was doing his same ol', same ol'. Blaming himself for it all. And while he might blame others for things that occur and heap the blame on them (like Sam in other events, for example), he never blames anyone more than he does himself. He doesn't ever skirt away from it, even when we know it's really not his fault. Like Crowley said to him, no one hates him more than he hates himself. Even Dean has said it himself in earlier seasons, he blames himself for everything that goes wrong. So, the fact that he is shifting some of that blame (that he feels for himself I mean) onto Cas, the anger, not only is he admitting that he couldn't handle all of the self-blame and admitting this vulnerability (another character development happening in season 15 for Dean) but that's also what spouses/romantic partners sometimes tend to do when certain situations pop up/occur.
So when Cas ends up getting fed up (as he should) and gets ready to leave, Dean doesn't want him to (as we already knew) but because of Dean and his personality, who he is, he doesn't stop Cas from going up those stairs in 15x03. He thinks knows that he deserves for Cas to leave and like he's said before, everyone leaves him. And while Cas shouldered the blame that Dean laid on him, dealt with the anger and cold shoulder that Dean dished out, when he finally put his foot down (after that horrible thing Dean said in 15x03), Dean didn't stop him because he knew Cas was right and because Dean thought it was inevitable. So he let Cas go not only because he wasn't at the point that he wasn't ready to let it go/apologize/forgive but also because he figured Cas was better off.
So now when you see this scene again:
youtube
And you watch Jacting Joices, hear the emotional music cue (aka Dean's theme), listen to the dialogue, hear the echoing sounds (that the editors purposely left in) along with Dean of Cas going up the stairs and opening the door and leaving (you even hear the door close loudly), the pan out of the shot of Dean sitting frozen against the table, Dean's "where you going?" when Cas starts to leave, Cas' hopeful little look back before actually turning to leave, Dean's little internal war that we see play all over his face before (sadly? worriedly? I'm thinking both) watching Cas climb the stairs, the title of the episode coinciding with the actual rift Rowena closes/"heals" (think to her marriage counseling in Hell later on btw and how it connects back considering it was her death and how it affected Sam that became the catalyst for Dean unleashing on Cas, Sam who Rowena has stepping out of the room for the session btw) -- it all comes together even more. Especially considering Berens wrote this episode, too, and then later on, thee episode (15x18). And there were parallels galore between 15x09 and 15x18 themselves as a standalone. It literally was a three-act story line, starting with the "breakup"/rift.
And if he connected all three of these episodes not only for Dean and Cas' relationship but also for it all to come back down to Dean and his character development, his story within the story itself, then you know without a doubt that what we all have been saying about the whole Destiel/Saileen parallels of season 15 and the parallels of Charlie/Stevie, Saileen and Destiel in 15x18 is absolutely confirmed.
Berens is actually one of the better writers on the show in this later stage and all of these connections he made to tell this brilliant story within the series to come out in one cohesive and well plotted out story line that not only furthers the development for Dean in a big way but also Sam, Cas, their relationships, and the show in general just proves it. That's why I have such a massive respect for him, not just because he wrote thee episode, not just because he wrote that beautiful dialogue for Cas to say to Dean in thee moment, but because he knows his stuff and he absolutely brought it all home in such a beautifully heartbreaking but ultimately fantastic way in the episodes he was given to write. He accomplished so much within such a short time and he gave it his all and it worked. He knew what he had with Jensen for example, and he absolutely played to Jensen's strengths not only in his performance of Dean but also as an actor in general. The guy knew what he was doing, he chose to stick around for the end, and he accomplished what he set out to do. And as a fellow writer, he has my full respect not only for his determination, his follow through, his sticking to his guns, but also his creativity.
And what's funny is a lot of antis and wincesties and the whole 'Dean is straight!'/Jensen-fanatical crowd hate Berens with a passion. They blame him (as well as Misha, Hellers, the show, and anyone else who was open to the idea of this part of the story) for even putting it into the show. (and even funnier, if none of it is real as they say, then why hate Berens or anyone if it's only in the destiel crowd's heads? or why then switch to the whole 'they only put it in to pander to the hellers' excuse? ...uh huh) But he really knocked it out of the park. He really did this whole setup and strung it altogether like a master.
So for some that line of the dialogue that didn't make it into the 15x09 prayer might not mean much, but to those of us that were looking at the whole framework Berens set up this season and his connection of the dots (which led to Cas being one of the most important relationships for Dean this season, regardless of how you view it, Cas' words got through to Dean and set him up for one of his main points of character development by the end, in the conflict with the final villain of the series), this is pure gold. And more importantly, validation/confirmation.
And I am beyond convinced that had 15x19 not been the final episode of the mytharc, we absolutely would have seen Dean and Sam coming up with a way to rescue Cas from The Empty, and we wouldn't have had a final goodbye from Jack. We also would have found out what happened to Eileen, Alt!Charlie, and Alt!Bobby.
Just beautiful, brilliant storytelling. Lovely development from point A to point Z. All in one season. And while not everything was perfect and there were definitely some plot holes along the way in seasons before this (and that thing they called a series finale), and while this isn't how SPN started (or anywhere near Kripke's version), this is what it became years later, and Berens (and some other writers) were very in tune with it, while also maintaining the essence somewhat of the original characters/story.
Going back to that line of dialogue "So what I couldn't take I put on you" absolutely falls in line with who Cas is to Dean at this point. Regardless of how you view it, Cas was someone Dean trusted (even after Mary's 2nd death and all of the betrayals, drama, hurt, and anger along the way), someone who Dean let in, and someone who Dean depended on. We all make jokes that Dean and Cas were co-parenting Jack (with Sam of course) but in a way, that's exactly how it was set up. Because of who Cas was, not only to Jack, not only to Sam, but also to Dean. They're partners. Dean relies on Cas in the same way Sam and Eileen are beginning to rely on each other (further proof of that paralleling dynamic, "If she needs something from me, she'll tell me. We have an agreement").
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I'll go with you"
So that wording...that wording is everything.

Something about Kim Dokja and the fact people love the core part of him that is, in the most ultimate way, just another guy. Just another guy who loves a story.
I think it’s amazing how people can work jobs that are monotone in its routine and not what they wanted in life and they can go home and click online and be alive again. Because they love what they watched, what they read, and they find solace in a fandom where people love the same things.
I saw this artist once; someone had commented that the ship they were drawing wasn’t canon and had no purpose. And the artist replied something along the lines of, ‘I work a 9 to 5 job and if I want to make these characters kiss in the three hours of free time I have, then I will make them kiss’
That’s a memory I hold close to me.
It’s like,,,you love this thing, you love the people who love it. Part of why ORV is so popular is because people relate to Kim Dokja. They relate to his world. A lot of people- a lot of people have headcanons, aus, fandoms that no one else understands, that no one likes, and a percentage of those people; they dedicate hours upon hours to making content of these things they love without fail, even when no one else cares.
Kim Dokja loved a novel no one else read; it was his only light in his life. And that’s- that’s something us, the readers, could understand.
He was just a guy and he loved something. Lived for it. Devoted all he had to it. And that’s a dear part of him that we love.

Board certified abyss 12 HATER
#‘oh youre just bad at it’ i am bad at it because its bad game design. i rest my case#im not even bad at it. i could definitely clear and 36 star if i wanted to. however i should not have to take 40 shots at thr same content#trying to random luck my way into mashing the right set of buttons and miaculously not getting hit because the hp pools are too high to lose#a single percent of your dps bringing a healer or. for that matter. actually healing.#this is i think why Neuvillette has such a good rep. hes basically invincible at c1 which means you#dont have to retry the same chambers over and over because he keeps getting one-shot. because lets all look into our hearts at this moment#his damage is not that much higher than any other dps character’s damage. he just also heals and fits into the current meta#people used to say the same shit theyre saying about neuvillette about nahida#and once natlan comes out the meta will change once again. hp builds will once again become unnecessary in abyss. bennet will make a#reemergence. overload meta will become real. there will be one character who is good to use in burgeon teams theyll be burgeon nilou. this#is my natlan prediction#part of it anyway#and then we will get shneznaya and there will be a character who does damage based on how high you can get their crit over 100% but they#wont be that meta theyll be like cursed with low modifiers. but nonetheless the meta will change again.#im in a love hate relationship with the genshin meta because it is in a love-hate relationship with itself#board certified my post#board certified metaposting

after a million years plus an addition million years post the show ending i am finally just now scribbling out my takes and stuff on fethry's immediate family a la how they would fit into dt17 canon
the breakdown in my mind is that all 3 of eider and lulubelle's children are Strange and Ambiguously Disordered (fethry taking the most after his mother) and also to some degree have inherited eider's legendary strength (abner being basically on par with his father and fethry as the baby and the runt of the three being much more close to just having normal person strength, though still a bit surprising for how noodly he is)
more specific points abt the family under the cut bc i dont want the post to be too long @_@
abner
definitely autistic (as 3 and also lulu are) but its like in that. i dont have healthy coping mechanisms to deal with how alienated from ppl i feel so im just gonna fish and carve wood and if anyone enters my space i will burn it down with both of us still inside it. way
that being said abner’s still plenty capable of being a compassionate guy deep down. he cares a lot about his family and takes whatever responsibility u entrust him with extremely seriously
comes off as emotionally stunted bc he doesnt really show affection in the “normal” way, including and especially physical affection and also. saying shit  out loud. he has his own love language its called * noncommittal groan of acceptance as you enter his house *
in my brain i know he should have a job but all i can think about is him fucking off in the woods so he doesnt have to talk with people. maybe one of those people who sit in towers all day to make sure forests dont burn down. i dunno
mary
loves acting and wants to be a professional stage/screen actor so bad but is unfortunately terrible at acting. probably been in like a few commercials or something
very very dramatic, im talking full comedy sketch of a julliard actor levels of melodrama and stage fainting, whether onstage or not. this makes it hard to tell if her reactions to things are genuine or not unless u are her brothers or parents who have been dealing with this forever
since the acting career is not really taking off Yet she has maybe ripped off 1 or 2 or 20 or so people maybe more just to keep the lights on. ironically when shes conning people she can actually act convincingly (my leverage fans out there. you know)
some of you will probably ask about dugan and while i do absolutely love dugan personally in my mind marys not ready nor interested in motherhood. so. maybe some day i will reveal my own dt17 dugan origin concept idk
eider
something of a local folk hero due to both his truly legendary strength and his equally strong inclination to lend his neighbors a hand, or really anyone else who may need a little help for that matter
as exceptionally goofy and loving as you could want any dad to be, though he can also be a bit stern when he needs to be, and a little prideful
in my mind i think it would be very cool if he had moved his family into granny elvira’s farm to give her a hand bc while shes a tough old woman everyone still needs a hand from time to time but i dont know if this contradicts any serious duck lore so forgive me
lulubelle
full loon baby ! none of this “looks like every other member of clan mcduck” shit !!! yes this includes the blood red eyes #epicloonwin
many make the mistake to count her as an absent minded spooky insane woman but this could not be further from the truth. she is very sharp-witted, observant, and is only spooky simply because its pretty near impossible to creep or gross her out, and even harder to full-on scare. and also because she makes long uninterrupted eye contact all the time
fethry definitely inherited a lot from her, but one of the main things they share is the tendency to cycle through all kinds of seemingly unrelated hobbies and interests; but much like fethry’s chief passion seems to be marine biology, lulu greatly enjoys botany and all it’s practical applications, as well as music

I am getting back into my Jonsa feels, man. Hardcore.
In the very same episode that Dany saves Jon beyond The Wall and he bends the knee you have these back to back sequences:
1) Jon & Jorah:
youtube
Here, the convo starts where Jon talks about serving with Jorah's father. He then offers Longclaw back to Jorah, who politely declines and offers the sword back to Jon, telling him "May it serve you well. And your children after you."
Important things to note:
"Were you with him at the end?" "I was a prisoner of the Wildlings." - interesting turn of phrase there Jon (makes me think of 8x05-8x06 btw) -- "I hate that he died that way." (again, this makes me think of 8x06)
"My father was the most honorable man I ever met. He was good all the way through. And then he died on the executioner's block." "Your father wanted to execute me." "I heard." (this makes me think of Dany telling Jon the same thing about Ned in 7x03)
"He changed the pommel from a bear to a wolf but it's still Longclaw." -- this is part of a subtle setup for the Targaryen reveal imho, but also showing us that regardless, he's still the same man he was before he knew that info or ever went to Dragonstone -> which is proven by the next thing Jon says: "Lord Commander Mormont never thought you would come back to Westeros. But you did come back. It's been in your family for centuries. It's only right for you to have it." (this makes me think of Dany and her birthright, no one thought she'd come to Westeros even after they heard she was alive and amassing strength across the sea & then it makes me think of Jon's claim to the IT and "I told you. I don't want it" that he says to Dany in 8x04 vs Dany's "I was born to rule" said to Jon in 7x03)
"He gave it to you." "I'm not his son." "I shamed my house. I broke my father's heart. I forfeited the right to claim this sword." -> while this isn't an exact word-for-word about Dany (especially since she doesn't technically shame her house or break her father's heart though she definitely took it further than Aegon or Aerys ever did), especially with how Jon's story in the series ends, it still can be linked to that whole rival claim to the IT scenario between her and Jon & even minutely to Jon's bending the knee & giving the North away - either way, the really important theme here is family, Targaryen, Stark, Mormont, etc. Jon is being given a family heirloom, a legacy, that he feels he didn't earn and has no right to, but is being entrusted with it. Sounds familiar to what he will give up in the end of the episode, doesn't it?
And that comes into play with the next part, where Jorah then tells Jon to keep it and mentions the children. Something Jorah absolutely does not need to mention here. He could have left it at "May it serve you well" but they purposely threw in this extra line. Because then they show us how Jon reacts to it. And what do we get? A deep breath, as if he feels the very weight of the decision he has to make. You know where else we see that deep breath?
Tumblr media
Later on in the same episode, after he's bent the knee and Dany has left his room. This isn't something he wanted to do, but the line Jorah said is driven home. There won't be any children in the future (his or anyone else's) if the Night King is not defeated. And after he saw Dany and her dragons in action, he made the difficult decision to give her what she wanted so he could get her, her two remaining dragons, and her armies up North. And while they are missing Viserion in this equation now, Jaime said it himself in 7x05: "We've seen what one dragon can do. Imagine three." And we indeed see the dent Drogon and Rhaegal make in 8x03 as well as the destruction Drogon alone causes in 8x05. This scene in 7x06 may have read that Jon realizes he is starting to have feelings for her but that is not why he bent the knee. Nor is it because he feels guilty over Viserion. He wasn't responsible for himself being Beyond the Wall; Dany herself was. Which is why, besides her obvious feelings for him, she flies to save him.
2) Sansa & Arya:
youtube
The very next scene is at Winterfell, Arya standing on the scaffold and watching the courtyard below as it snows, reminiscing. Sansa joins her and Arya begins to tell her of a memory of Ned clapping for her as she discreetly shot arrows with Bran's bow. I often wondered why Arya chose this particular memory to regale Sansa with besides the obvious mention of Ned (and the upcoming banding together to kill Littlefinger & "the pack survives" moment) & how it relates to the Robb scroll. But now it makes sense.
"Father used to watch us from up here. He wouldn't say much. You probably don't remember. You were inside knitting at the time." "I remember." -- The chasm between Arya and Sansa is at its greatest length, worse than when they were younger and used to fight. They don't know who the other is at this moment, and after all they have been through on their own separate journeys, they're not sure they can trust each other. Arya is sus that Sansa is the same ol' Sansa while Sansa is not sure she can trust Arya to not put her in danger. (this is brought home by the lines "Anger makes people do unfortunate things." "Fear makes people do unfortunate things." - because it shows clearly what the motivating emotion is for each sister in this particular episode)
"Finally, I hit the bullseye. It could've been the twentieth shot or the fiftieth, I don't remember. But I hit the bullseye. And I heard this." *slow claps* "I looked up and he's standing right here, smiling down at me. I knew what I was doing was against the rules. But he was smiling, so, I knew it wasn't wrong. The rules were wrong. I was doing what I was meant to be doing and he knew it." -- to me, this absolutely isn't just about Arya and what she became or a pleasant memory for her to indulge in, it plays into not only what Jon does by the end of the episode, but also is a bit on point for Sansa as well (for what happens in 7x07 and later on in 8x04) -> Jon doesn't want to "manipulate" someone "kindly", he thinks that everyone should want to help stop the Night King since it will affect the future of the whole world, especially this woman who says she is born to rule Westeros, who says she wants to help people, and has "made impossible things happen". He refuses to bend the knee because like he tells Dany in 7x04 "My people will never accept a Southern ruler." But Dany believes it is Jon's pride standing in the way of giving her what she wants and even says as much, which is reiterated by Tormund in this very episode. But we know it's not Jon's pride that stops him; it's the trust the North has put in him to lead them & he takes that very seriously. And based on what Kit said around the time of 8x01's production, Jon knows Sansa won't be happy about this development either and he fully expects her resistance. So Jon has to break the rules in order to do the right thing. The rules aka keeping something hidden from the audience in season 8 as he goes about his business aka not bending the knee to Dany right away despite her claim to the IT -> there has not been a Queen of the North for some time, if ever (sorry idr if this was mentioned in the books or not), and by her becoming Queen it essentially "breaks the rules", when in the beginning of the series the only way for her to become Queen was by marrying Joffrey. And while yes, Ned's line of "someone brave and gentle and strong" was meant for a future husband of Sansa's, it can also be applied to herself.
Here's how it relates to Jonsa: Ned. Ned is the connecting link here (and truthfully, has been since their reunion in season 6). This is why all of the Ned/Cat parallels & callbacks. Jon & Dany were essentially two sides of the same coin, going through similar journeys and meeting towards the end before going in other (but somewhat similar directions). Jon & Sansa have always been paralleled but they are not two sides of the same coin, their stories actually gel together even before they reunited and continue to do so in the last seasons that seems to show them as one. Working together, facing the same direction, and having the same goals: family, Winterfell, the North. And talking about these parallels, if Sansa learned to play the game and fools the so-called Master of the Game in this very season, you can bet that Jon used his learning experience being undercover in the Wildlings and is using it for something. "Everything before the word but is horseshit." And then to Dany: "I would kneel but--" Again, it all comes back to Ned for Jon and Sansa this season. Which then leads to the decision Jon is forced to make in 8x06 which is all Ned-related as well.
Then, as the scene continues, Arya confronts Sansa about the scroll and she says: "They forced me to do it." "Did they?" "You don't know what it was like." "I would've let them kill me before I betrayed my family." It's no coincidence that this is the scroll Arya has found this episode, that it has to do with the Lannisters and Ned, and that this scene is happening between the two sisters, in the very same episode Jon has to make this decision that weighs on him so heavily. Jon and Sansa are being paralleled yet again this episode. Because the show is trying to tell us that Jon is about to be in a similar situation that Sansa had once found herself in, that Dany is no different to the Lannisters (though we eventually find out she is more deadly and way more powerful with her dragon's rage and her destiny in mind). That Sansa is actually right to be worried in 8x04 and that when she sees even Tyrion is afraid of her, she is scared for Jon. This is cemented by Sansa's line of: "They told me it was the only way to save Father." & then Arya: "I remember you standing on that platform with Joffrey and Cersei when they dragged Father to the block."
Tumblr media
(Tyrion is there with them btw and ironically, this is Varys' execution for being a traitor; Drogon is in place of Ser Ilyn Payne)
Tumblr media
(Tyrion is here too, as is Drogon & Grey Worm who are both suspicious of Jon at this point; Tyrion is arrested as a traitor & jailed)
"I was there standing in the crowd by Baelor's statue."
Tumblr media
"Did you come running to the rescue? Did you fight off the Lannisters and save Father?" "I wanted to."
Tumblr media
And the scroll that Arya reads to Sansa: ""Robb, I write to you with a heavy heart. Our good king Robert is dead, killed from wounds he took in a boar hunt. Father has been charged with treason. He conspired with Robert’s brothers against my beloved Joffrey and tried to steal his throne. The Lannisters are treating me very well and provide me with every comfort. I beg you: come to King’s Landing, swear fealty to King Joffrey and prevent any strife between the great houses of Lannister and Stark." (Robb, who Jon is also paralleled to at times, who Sansa takes up the mantle from and parallels herself & the 2nd wolf in her crown is meant to represent as per Michele Clapton)
It not only sounds eerily similar to what Tyrion wrote to Jon in 7x02 (though tbf it's way more subtle and is in typical Dany rhetoric fashion) but also the message that Jon is constantly repeating to anyone who will listen: "She is our queen." "She's not her father." "She will make a good queen. For all of us." Because this is what he was told many times in many different ways before he bent the knee to Dany. What he knows Sansa and the North need to hear.
"I didn't betray him. I didn't betray Robb. I didn't betray our entire family for my beloved Joffrey." Jon who is seen in Ned's and Robb's gear; Sansa who is angry with Jon for bending the knee & asks him point blank "Did you bend the knee to save the North or because you love her?" -> "Do you have any faith in me at all?" - Jon
3) Jon & Tormund:
youtube
Then we get the random convos but that actually aren't that random.
"Gingers are beautiful. We are kissed by fire." - while Tormund is indeed a ginger, interesting that this comes up in conversation literally after the past two scenes being back to back; & of course the whole lucky kissed-by-fire bit comes up again but is contrasted by the dialogue partner being Sandor who does not have any positive view of fire and for good reason
"Did you trip into the fire as a baby?" "I didn't trip, I was pushed." - to me, this makes me think of two things: 1) kissed by fire is lucky -> red -> Sansa & burned -> pain -> Dany; 2) Jon has grown up a Stark his whole life & wanted to be a Stark, he didn't choose to have the Targaryen background that he does & I think this is part of what he struggles with so much, right up to 8x06
"I have a beauty waiting for me back at Winterfell. If I ever get back there."
Tumblr media
Again, why is this line being thrown in there? In order to introduce Brienne into the convo, it could have been said another way but no they purposely chose this wording to be in this scene after those other 2 & I firmly believe this is in relation to Sansa because Jon is hoping to get back to Winterfell for the battle but there is no guarantee thanks to this mission and of course Dany's imprisonment before that.
"I want to make babies with her." "How did a mad fucker like you live this long?" "I'm good at killing people." - this makes me immediately think of 7x03: Dany - "We all enjoy what we're good at." Jon - "I don't."
4) Jon & Beric:
(same video above)
"You don't look much like him." "Who's that?" "Your father." - again, we come back to Ned. Not only because we get the whole Targaryen reveal soon (which is cemented by "I guess you favor your mother") but also because of the choice Jon will have to make next season which echoes Ned's and once more comes back to Sansa.
"We both serve the same Lord." "I serve the North." - once again, we are told point blank who Jon really serves which should make the audience suspicious when he does a sudden 180 at the end of the episode, especially when he uses the "but"
"We're soldiers. We have to know what we're fighting for. I'm not fighting for some man or woman I barely know so they can sit on a throne made of swords." "So who are you fighting for?" "Life. Death is the enemy. The first and the last." "But we all die." "The enemy always wins and we still need to fight him. That's all I know. You and I won't find much joy while we're here. But we can keep others alive. We can defend those who can't defend themselves." "I am the shield that guards the realms of men." "Maybe we don't need to understand anymore than that. Maybe that's enough." "Aye. Maybe that's enough." - this immediately brings me back to 7x03 with "No offense, Your Grace, but I don't know you." & Missandei's "We didn't choose her because she's the daughter of some king we never knew." (7x04) -> this whole dialogue right here between Jon & Beric shows exactly the choice Jon made. It was always about the Night King for him. Just like with the wildlings, he did what he had to do. That doesn't mean he didn't come to care for Dany in some way, especially when he found out she was his last remaining family on the Targaryen side (I'm remembering Aemon's words "no family to guide her or protect her"), but he didn't bend the knee because he loved her or started to have feelings for her or because he felt guilt over Viserion or because he genuinely believed Dany would be a good queen. He did it to save the North and protect the world, to be that shield once more. That's what it was about for him. And that's why he's so bothered by the possibility of Sansa not having any faith left in him, by Lyanna Mormont's ripping him a new one. This is why that deleted scene where Jon was slightly amused at the North's chilly reception of Dany.
And then of course, "You and I won't find much joy while we're here."
Tumblr media
(and in this scene, notice how he does the same deep breath from 7x06, the same burden on his shoulders but this time in the form of his banishment to the Wall after having to make the decision he did earlier in the episode)
"But we can keep others alive."
Tumblr media
"We can defend those who can't defend themselves."
Tumblr media
(not to say that Sansa couldn't defend herself but against Dany/Drogon, the Unsullied, and the Dothraki - that wouldn't have been good odds to put it lightly. - also the beautiful thing about this season for these two: not only does Sansa save Jon in 6x09 but she does what she couldn't do in 1x10, she tries to save Jon (aka Ned) & in a way does (though he still gets banished, but this was the option Ned wasn't allowed though he chose it) but she 'broke the rules' aka told his secret in order to protect him, did a dishonorable thing which is her telling the secret despite her promise, and wanted to save him which she goes to KL to do which we see in the Dragon Pit scene in 8x06 & hear about from Tyrion in the later jail scene). And in season 1, Sansa told Ned's secret for selfish reasons. Here, she did it for the right reasons, even if Jon "can't forgive her" just yet for it. (though the hug scene shows us that he's not angry enough to not say goodbye to her before he's gone) In this aspect of the series, for these two on this front, it really did come full circle.
And as cheesy as it sounds, I like to think of Ned somewhere slow clapping and smiling, because they all worked together and the pack survived the winter that came. Jon was smarter than Ned and Robb; he listened. And Sansa saved herself from "Joffrey/the Lannisters" in the form of Jon as well as Ned; she learned.

i promised cats metaposting 2 bagpipe boogaloo and i am a bitch of my word here we go
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
cats 1998: the rum tum tugger + these hands are rated G for grizabella
(theory wank under cut call that catracter development)
(theory wank about munkustrap & grizabella here for those uninitiated)
RIGHT SO unfortunately this one is no longer semi-coherent overanalysis of microexpression but a full descent into conspiratorial madness, so please remain aware of the fact that this is a tangent missing textual support at the best of times. it's entirely possible and even likely that rum tum tugger is genuinely just a bitch to grizabella because that's who he is as a person and doesn't like what she smells like or something idfk. anyway.
welcome to my red string board of why rum tum tugger actually doesn't dislike her for no reason and totally has depth and yeah we're poor little meow meowing a white boy with more hubris than eyeliner, classic essay genre on tumblr, at least he's a catboy this time and the hubris-eyeliner ratio is actually a close call.
anyway, for any of my theorizing to make sense, here are the two headcanons it's all based on:
grizabella is an (ex-)wife of old deuteronomy and the mother of rum tum tugger (and munkustrap if you're so inclined)
grizabella left the jellicle cats at some point when rum tum tugger was a kitten or otherwise a very young cat
and honestly the rest just flows from the mommy issues to be honest. there's a load of alternate explanations and theories and headcanons and mine's by no means the right one necessarily, but i do have to admit the family angst it allows for is balls to the walls insane because it just. it fits what we see on screen so well!
Tumblr media
look at this clown i love him. he ONLY does the puff-up at grizabella. and even though that supports my theorizing it's also honestly a bit of a loss i think. it's such an evocative cat-thing. i want him to do that when something jumpscares him lmao. i NEED him to do that at old deuteronomy jokingly and get cuffed on the back of the head by munkustrap for being a professional youngest child. anyway
don't get me wrong, the fact that tugger has a grudge against grizabella isn't anything special, most older cats do; hell, some of them deliberately walk past her Judgementally (bombalurina, notably) or shake their head at her in disapproval (jennyanydots), but it's so pointedly constant and so pointedly Pointed with tugger that it draws my eye. every time she appears, he has to clearly and explicitly broadcast his displeasure with the fact that she's daring to breathe at them.
Tumblr media
like, she's not In His Way or anything here. he doesn't have to walk past her if he doesn't want to. he doesn't have to look at her; plenty of other cats pretend she doesn't exist when she looks at them. but not only does he do all those things, he explicitly looks at her and puffs his coat up again. he's walking at a fairly brisk pace toward her and actually slows down to do it. it's such a deliberately mean thing to do it's stuck between really extra and really petty. exactly the same with the jellicle choice scene.
Tumblr media
my man's being so petty this should be constituted as bullying lmao. look at that! nobody likes you still! sucks to be you i guess! like. this man would be pouncival doing the fake pranks and scratching her if he was a kitten. he's just, constantly upping his level of mean to her. in the first scene he at least has the decency to walk out in the opposite direction of her.
a really professional youngest child. again, all that ^ is fairly grounded thought on character performance i think if you don't really connect it to anything, but i'm connecting it to abandonment issues for maximum ouch lmao.
so, bear with me for a moment: for whatever reason, grizabella leaves the jellicles, including her husband and kid(s). (if you're a fan of the theory about macavity being the third brother to munkustrap and tugger, i mean, she might've just left with him because he was her kid. i dunno.) and you're tugger. Baby tugger, even. you don't understand why she'd leave you. was it you? were you too much? were you not enough? of course not, but you're a little cat with a lot of pride and all the makings of a Petty Little Bastard in you, so you say fuck all that. i'm not too much; i'm actually more than enough. i'm the best! and i'll make damn sure you never forget it!
i feel like if you include munkustrap in that too it gets to be a really interesting dynamic. tugger's mean and angry and going out of his way to show it, and munkustrap is just kind of. "can we not do this" about it. really seems like he'd rather be somewhere else, but, i mean, welcome to The Unpleasant Shit being his job. professional eldest sibling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she approaches him and he actively goes absolutely not oh look at that what a nice corner i'll just go stand over there. meanwhile tugger's determined to be all OH! OH LOOK WHO'S HERE!!!! WELCOME HOME CHEATER!!!!!! about it. like i already made a post about this so i won't get into it again but i really don't think munkustrap is all that mad at her, which gives tugger's attitude some nice contrast.
continuing with dynamics for a moment, i feel like tugger either has real Attuned Parental Figure Senses or is surprisingly perceptive for his character? this isn't necessarily connected with the point before, but i mean, he stops his whole entire number MID-DANCE MOVE to point out grizabella. he does do it with great flow though you must admit.
Tumblr media
he loves attention!! that's established!! whether or not he's up for it at All Times we can have a discussion about (he really just dips out after his number to recharge for a good while lol) but he's here having the time of his life, BOOM one whiff of grizz and he's tearing down the party decorations, that's it, everyone go home.
i'd attribute it to him just Really Having That Big of a grudge if he didn't also kinda sorta activate his Deuteronomy Detect power during the lad's arrival LMAO.
Tumblr media
look at that! he beats munkustrap to it! admittedly i can't see the rest of the stage so it might be that all the other cats already saw it and he's just pointing old deuteronomy out to munkustrap as the latter's too busy looking the other way. but it's still a funky way to get in character traits besides Mean & A Whore!
ok and another notable thing, and to me something really interesting, it that tugger never does end up touching grizabella, even though he has the choice to.
after she's first accepted back via touch from victoria, the cats sort of line up to show their affections too. it's a really nice scene in my opinion, you get the sense that all those cats really are happy to be able to take back an old friend and i'm all for it. but the cherry is that tugger is being Really Interestingly Acted here - he leads cassandra closer so she can reach out to grizabella, but tugger himself stays behind with this sort of blank expression over him. even those cats i mentioned before - jennyanydots and bombalurina - get the moment to hold grizabella's hands and smile and encourage her on. tugger doesn't do that.
Tumblr media
grizabella doesn't touch every cat, granted, but even those she doesn't touch are reaching out to her, which is pretty much as good as. they all do enough of that sort of implied gesture throughout the musical that it shows it's affection and acceptance all the same whether or not physical contact is made, like for example old deuteronomy's greeting and the moments before the jellicle choice; the first one's posed similarly to grizabella's return, everyone's trying to touch old deuteronomy, but they're perfectly fine with sort of just reaching out and being reached out to (note mr mistoffelees and bombalurina). in the second one it's even sillier because both munkustrap and old deuteronomy could clear the like 10cm of distance between them, but the reaching and willingness is more than enough for that mutual understanding to come between them. basically intent > result (side note: this is not a good rule for life outside of the cats musical).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tugger doesn't reach out. doesn't try to get any closer than he already got and stays in the shadow behind the rest, just watching her go for a bit before he dips again.
Tumblr media
with the way he's squashed behind asparagus jr here i can't tell if he's bowing or nodding or what, but i think it'd be really funny if he was just trying to make himself shrink a little. like hanging his head nope i'm not here don't look at me goodbye. so completely contradictory to his usual vibe it's hilarious.
it is interesting to think about though, in my opinion, that he spends pretty much the rest of the musical in the shadow and separated from the other celebrating cats. he climbs up onto the chest and stays on that platform for the rest of the show while the other cats are being directed by munkustrap to follow and then surround old deuteronomy.
Tumblr media
it's interesting - he may be positioned above the other cats physically, but it makes him feel sort of separated if you know what i mean. there's usually this pretty clear separation between munkustrap and the other cats when they're on screen, they might crouch when he stands and reach out to him when he's talking, but this time munkustrap is just down there calling upon the vibes with the other cats, and only makes his way up to old deuteronomy's right after grizabella's gone and it's time for the closing number. rum tum tugger straight up bounces as they're going to the russel hotel LMAO.
he does hype her up as she's going up, which is also really cute. he's off to the side so the other cats aren't really looking at him, but even as old deuteronomy shows her the rest of them, grizabella's eyes linger on tugger's wee rockstar schtick and it just kind of melts me.
Tumblr media
anyway. man may be conflicted but he's happy mum gets a retry whether anyone likes it or not. and i think that's nice. :)
