it was a fun attempt at an interesting idea, control and repeat timelines etc - i thought of Toby Fox's deltarune in the idea of ur character fighting back from its rpg control, a very interesting grey area of what experience you want as a participant in this weird story telling [at one point i straight up didnt want to choose between two characters dying so i let /it/ decide] - but they played it As safe as possible by going with white boy with mom issues.

I love how many angles you can analyse it from when you think back to other Black Mirror episodes. And even those analyses change based on which set of choices you made and how his story played out. And the deeper you analyse the sadder his story gets in some cases.

I think the fact that some of the choices were forced actually helped to reinforce the theme of the movie. The film talks about free will and whether it exists or whether it’s just an illusion. When we the viewer make choices sometimes we get the same outcome either way, which makes us experience the very thing that Stefan is battling with in the movie- is free will real or an illusion?

I understand that the theme of the episode was free will and how much of an illusion is that, but this came after. I mean, I haven’t read anything about this episode, so maybe they had already said something about this. All I knew was that I could choose for the character.

I thought we could do exactly that: “play god”, a bit like the writers themselves when they write a storyline. Instead viewers were subjected to the same rule of the character. Free will is usually an illusion but weren’t we the ones who pulled the strings? Weren’t we supposed to be playing “without rules”?. The message surely got across but I was a bit disappointed, even though it was not a big deal at the end of the day - we could indeed make very different choices and get to very different endings.

What I really can’t find interest in is the story itself. They created a great atmosphere through style, colours, music and all but the story never truly took off. Some episodes of Black Mirror are impossible to forget, which is why I have to watch this show in very small doses, cause it really upsets me! With Bandersnatch I had the feeling that they put so much effort in bulding all the structure to the point they overlooked a bit the storyline itself. But that’s just a matter of opinion!
