Seeing Aziraphale hate, saying he was selfish, is disappointing.
Because maybe Aziraphale wouldn't stay on Earth for Crowley, but Crowley wouldn't come to Heaven for Aziraphale, either. They were both rejected, after offering what they each thought the other wanted.
This isn't about who made the right choice and who made the wrong one. The key here, what really matters, is that they both made the right choices for themselves. They're doing what they feel is right, even if that means not being together.
And honestly, I don't think Aziraphale staying on Earth was ever an option. Maybe there was something in the coffee, maybe there was Miracle, maybe definitely the Metatron is a manipulative son-of-a-bitch. But Aziraphale's entire life, his entire purpose so far as he knew it, was to guide human souls to the light so they can come to Heaven and be spared an eternity of damnation. Can you imagine an Aziraphale who is offered the opportunity where he might improve things in Heaven and for the humans he loves so dearly, but who doesn't take it? I can't. And once the storm clouds pass I think Crowley will feel that too.
Aziraphale sees the red flags, of course he does. But he remembers the beautiful times, and like the toxic relationship that this is, he can't help but hold onto the hope that this time it will be different.
Anyway, I don't believe his choice was out of character. Not at all.
