LET'S TALK HSR PENACONY 2.1 (or rather, have my impressions and thoughts on the main quest and some other stuff)

First of all, I went out of it with so many thoughts and emotions. This is not gonna be spoiler free (duh).

ACHERON IS SO FUN TO PLAY. Like, really really fun. Finally Simulated Universe is not an annoying pain anymore, and much quicker too. Thanks to a good friend of mine her relics aren't too bad either. She's already so fun to play with Black Swan, can't wait for a Kafka rerun now 💀

Aa for the story now: I FUCKING KNEW MIKHAIL WAS THE WATCHMAKER. I KNEW IT. Now to wait for them to confirm that Misha is connected to him, either as a ghost of his past self or a child or some sort. It's the only way.

It's also really refreshing to see that HSR is giving 4star characters significant roles in the story. First it was Tingyun, now it's Gallagher (and maybe Misha? I'll die on this hill).

Loved the pacing. Story was quite long and lots of gameplay but didn't feel overwhelming at all, probably because we didn't just stick to the MC the whole time. The characters split up and we didn't just follow the express crew but also Aventurine, I really loved that. It felt so dynamic and immersive.

WELT AND ACHERON INTERACTION. BRO. The way I gasped the whole time. We still don't have a canon confirmation of how Raiden Mei and Acheron or just generally HI3rd and HSR are connected but it's sp clear that Acheron is by far the closest connection yet. So sp excited to find out more about this. Raiden Mei, I'll love you in every universe.

Aventurine and Ratio are also very interesting to me. What does Ratio gain by involving himself in all of this? What does he get out of it? Anyway, their little journey through the mansion was nice. GIGANTIC RATIO. The kinda stuff my dreams are made of tbh.

Generally the whole Aventurine story got me right from the beginning. He's generally one of the most interesting characters to me (although this game has plenty of them). I gotta admit of course I was suspicious of him (as one should be of all Penacony characters) but I liked him nevertheless. This patch supported my feelings, my GOD HE xkdjjdjdjd. The way I cried. Since I played the story so late ofc I saw some spoilers/screenshots of his backstory but I never expected it to hit me this hard. Just wow. His ending, too. It's so bitter. Kinda hope we get to see him again, since he'a mot really dead, right? Just in some limbo.

His boss fight was really something. Not a lot of different patterns, but I still had to try a bunch of different teams, since you're kinda fucked even with just a single single target character in your party. Had to unbench Clara, and I gotta say, she came through for me. I might not have used the most meta team, but it worked soooo...

And just as I was glad I had managed the fight they hit you with that big cut scene, woah. AND THEN WITH THE FIREFLY SCENE? AND SUNDAY????

First of all, apparently it was common knowledge among the community since last patch that Sam was Firefly. Yeah, I gwt it bc of the leaks and stuff. But I'm just so confused as to HOW. Like HOW and WHY and just generally HUH. I can't wait for them to explain this connection (if you're reading this and you wanna spoil me with non-confirmed stuff then leave it, please, I might as well wait another 3 weeks).

And then Gallagher and Sunday... Just as I was admiring Sunday's beauty because he might legit just be one of the most gorgeous male character designs... THEY KILL HIM. When I tell ypu I was SHOOK. Mouth agape and all. Didn't know what to do. What a cliffhanger.

Now I don't have a real theory as to what I think will happen. If I remember correctly they said the main story will stretch until 2.3, right? I really wonder what else will happen, the story already seemed so huge this patch and I really wonder how it'll conclude. There's still so many questions and stories. Might add on to this post later when I have more thoughts.

Also Aventurine's banner just dropped but as of writing this I haven't pulled yet. Might add a little post later about it.

OOC: Hello! I’m the creator of SCP!MC/Yuu, and the one who also created the MC/Yuu from Hazbin Hotel (Demon Lord!MC/Yuu or Static Demon!MC/Yuu). Sorry to keep you waiting for some time.

God, they are plenty of anomalies that SCP!MC/Yuu forbid the boys to interact with. Such as SCP-173 (The Sculpture) (Peanut looking-ass who hasn’t clean its booty for some time) or SCP-682 (The Hard-to-Destroy Reptile).

SCP!MC/Yuu: We lost many lives trying to contain that oversized lizard. It didn’t help that Floyd wanted to squeeze the subject when I told him numerous times “no”. Did he listen? Of course not. Many field agents had to restrain him from entering 682’s chamber.

Don’t get me started on SCP-2386 (Pink Ladies). Those parasitic hoes are nasty insects, especially towards the male species.

SCP!MC/Yuu: Agree. I had to pull everyone back when D-Class subjects were transferring some for testing. When the anomalies saw them, they looked ready to tear them apart and kept banging against the indestructible glass that made up their container.

I mean…The guys look like they can attract anyone, especially the female audience.

SCP!MC/Yuu: Not funny. Fortunately, none of them had to experience such troubles as I told my colleagues and other foundation members to look after them. However, they have met some with good intentions.

[SCP-999 a.k.a. The Tickle Monster]

SCP!MC/Yuu would introduce the TWST Boys to 999 at its pen.

At first some were unnerved by the entity as it seems nothing but a sentient pile of orange goo with beady black eyes.

Others were already feeling happiness to seeing 999.

Grim, the ever-loving menace he is, despises 999 because he was pushed back by SCP!MC/Yuu that one time. (Don’t worry. They apologized and gifted him tuna cans.)

SCP-999: *Crawls over to Kalim and hugs him*

SCP!MC/Yuu: Awww…He likes you already.

Kalim: Aww! You are such a cute slime monster!

Cater: *Pulls out his phone* Gotta put this on MagiCam!

SCP!MC/Yuu: Whoa, hey! Cater, you can’t do that.

Cater: Why not?

SCP!MC/Yuu: All photos, videos, or audio recordings are prohibited within the foundation without authorization because that would risk the staff members and the object itself from the public being exposed. This includes your world’s public.

Ace: Seriously? Your job is lame.

SCP!MC/Yuu: I’m sorry you can’t collect memories, but you can always visit the foundation if I’m around.

Deuce: At least we can see you and others personally.

[999 crawls over towards everyone and hugs everyone.]

SCP!MC/Yuu: See? This is better than MagiCam and whatnot.

[SCP-5094 a.k.a. Miss J’s Whiz Kidz Schoolhouse]

Dr. MC/Yuu would pull out a disc and insert it in an older desktop computer model.

SCP!MC/Yuu: I granted permission to borrow this specific CD from Junior Researcher Xenia Chau. Now we can finally meet Miss. J.

When the desktop computer finally opens up, it shows a 2D character of a colorfully pixelated teacher named Miss. J (Which her name varies like Miss. Joy.)

Dr. MC/Yuu introduced themselves to the teacher and then the TWST Boys.

They explained that the boys were also their case and still running tests on the coffin that transported people to their “Wonderland.”

Most of them seemed fascinated by Miss. J while others were suspicious of the anomaly. Especially to a certain genius otaku.

Idia: *Perplexed by Miss. J and how she functions* You don’t seem to have any programs advanced enough to be sentient… *Mumbles under his breath* What are you?

SCP!MC/Yuu: Idia, that’s rude.

Miss. J: It’s quite alright, Dr. MC/Yuu. To be honest, I have no idea what am I. All I want is to educate children with knowledge of various fields and be engaged to learn more.

SCP!MC/Yuu: *Nods* That’s true to your nature. To be honest, I had a copy of you back when I was still a little kid. I didn’t know you or the others were alive and I wish I had kept mine for good memories. You- I mean, the other you kept me to be more open about everything.

Miss. J: *Smiles through the screen* It seems she did a great job teaching you to become a great person.

[SCP-2295 a.k.a. The Bear with a Heart of Patchwork]

Dr. MC/Yuu already filled some paperwork and contacted Dr. Gergis to have access of meeting Kairos.

The permission was granted and now everyone can see the little bear.

SCP!MC/Yuu: Kairos! *Picks up the patchwork teddy bear and hugs him*

Jack: What’s special about a stuffed bear?

SCP!MC/Yuu: Kairos has anomalous properties who detects major trauma to an organ within a two meter distance of a human. Then he would recreate that said organ (SCP-2295-1) with materials like fabric and stuffing. He then replaces the damaged organ with the one he fashioned and despite it not being biologically and chemically matching with the original organ, it still functions naturally.

[Then Kairos leaps out of Dr. MC/Yuu’s arms and rushes out of the room.]

SCP!MC/Yuu: Follow him!

[Everyone follows the patchwork bear to the infirmary where a young D-Class is exhibiting collapsed lungs. Kairos was by the patient’s bed and pulls out his needles, threads, and a fabric scissor. What was missing is leftover fabric and stuffing.]

SCP!MC/Yuu: Wait, wait, wait! *Yanks off their lab coat and tears it apart*

Riddle: What are you doing?!

SCP!MC/Yuu: Chill. I have spare coats. Kairos needs materials for his operation. *Rushes into the ward and passes their ruined coat to the bear* He needs stuffing, ASAP! *Commands a technician to gather nearby stuffing*

[After the materials are brought together, Kairos quickly fashions a new set of lungs with mismatched patterns and within a second, the new organs disappear in the D-Class’s chest. The patient is now breathing steadily and it seems the operation is a success.]

SCP!MC/Yuu: *Leaves the infirmary with Kairos in their arms* Good job, buddy. You saved another life. *Hugs the bear*

Riddle: *Jaw dropped* How…?

SCP!MC/Yuu: Oh, right. Your family is involved with the medical field back in your world and this is unlike what you would have expected. I wish I can explain more about the little one’s abilities, but unfortunately there’s no reports or records of where the faulty organs disappeared to. It’s still ongoing though.

Riddle: *Hesitant to ask something*

SCP!MC/Yuu: *Notices* Well, Kairos doesn’t hold any malicious intentions. You can hold him until we reach back to his chamber. I already hogged enough cuddles for today. *Passes the bear to Riddle*

Riddle: *Carefully holds Kairos in his arms*

SCP!MC/Yuu: We should get going. We don’t want Dr. Gergis to be worried about his anomaly subject.

[All the TWST boys and Dr. MC/Yuu then starts heading back to the chamber. Without everyone acknowledging Riddle at the time, he gently hugs the bear.]

Riddle: *Hugging the bear* You did a good job.

Cater: *Recording the whole time* Oh Great Seven.

Riddle: *Blushes hard of embarrassment* AHH! NO VIDEO RECORDING WITHIN THE FOUNDATION!!! Cater, delete that video. Delete it! If you don’t delete that video, it’s off with your head!

Ok but can I just say how obsessed I am with the story? Like it's so wonderful that every ask that I go through only amps up my excitement to read the next installment, meet the characters and everything. I won't be romancing Koda but he is so precious 😭 he is such a care bear and I love him so much for it, like I want to squish him in my arms like' ugh you are so cute, stop pouting you are even cuter' and then Scarlett makes my gay heart sing she is the only thing I ask from an Ice Queen Romance and you making it wlw is the precious icing on the cake, my MC would be a flustered mess around her, blushing and stuttering, staring at her when she is not looking, yearning to hold her hand and hoping that she likes her back. I am totally here for that.

Also I love the siblings so much, I am generally reluctant when it comes to sibling relationships but here it is done so perfectly that I can't help but feel a certain warmth towards them and they care so much about the MC makes me so happy. Fyi my MC doesn't have a good relationship with Cienna( I wanted a little sibling drama lol) like she loves her elder sister but wishes she wasn't always so put together you know? I think getting that care and warmth from Cienna is a difficult thing I mean C obviously cares for my MC but doesn't show it the way the other two do and omg Helena and Cienna are so alike, like when interacting with the other family members there were hugs and kisses but with Helena and Cienna it was straight to business, gotta say I love this and I want to see how this progresses because my MC does feel a certain way about this.

I’m so happy that you like both Koda and Scarlett— I can’t wait for you to interact with them in the coming update. Especially since they’re pretty much polar opposites in how they interact with the MC, which shouldn’t be too big of a surprise if we’re being honest.

As for the siblings? I adore them completely. I have a bunch of siblings myself, which makes me completely aware of how much they can impact you while growing up— even if you’re in a supernatural family. Cienna doesn’t expect anyone to have a close relationship with her— sort of par for the course when she has so much to do to make sure the family stays afloat (same with Helena). Doesn’t mean she doesn’t care, but it’s a sacrifice she’s willing to make in order to ensure her families wellbeing. Now if the MC asked her to change (not her work habits, as those are actually unhealthy, but herself)… Well… You’d actually see, probably for the first time, Cienna truly get mad at you and that’s not something anyone wants. I’m excited for you all to interact with her later down the line, as well as explore all the drama that’s beginning to brew on the horizon.

I lost track of this wip for a long time but I'm so glad to have found it again. Just finished my first playthrough since way back when this was just two chapters long and I am so delighted and impressed by the quality of writing and quantity of content! Also!!! I gotta gush about Salyra and Ahlf for a second.

You have made characters that are so flawed and so lovable in a way I very rarely see and it's fantastic! The more I learned about each of them and their interactions with the MC (many of which poor MC didn't even know about) the more I'm fascinated by them. So many of the revelations made genuinely hurt so deeply, Ahlf being the old leader of the blood guard, Salyra's new family, Ahlf never sharing her letters and lying about MC being happy and fine, Salyra's bid to fix the war by having a mixed race baby blessed by the gods, it's all terrible and my poor MC is heartbroken because these two people who should have loved her did such a bad job of it but she's also conflicted because she'd like to at least think that they do actually love her! They were trying to do their best while also being fairly self-centered people. The angst is so so good! And for all that I can fault these characters I can also kinda see their lines of reasoning. It makes sense that Ahlf wouldn't want Salyra back in his or the MCs life, both out of spite and out of real concern for the safety of his child cause like, who goes to give a baby god powers with the express disapproval of their partner??? You can't trust a person after that.

And while it sucks that Salyra has a whole new family now she's more than just the MCs mom, she's a whole ass person and so of course she continued to do the things that people do even without MC around, she continued to live and love and make questionable choices. It's shitty that she never came back, but the vibe I've gotten from both the game and your responses to asks here is that she was under the impression MCs life was better this way, that their life shouldn't be uprooted again, that they knew at least some version of the truth about where she was and how she was.

Never mind her involvement with the princess and the repercussions her counsel has had on countless people! She's so interesting and tugs my emotions in so many different directions. I pity her and I loath her, and I'm playing a character who loves her so much but is crumbling under each new revelation and it's so so good.

And oh my God another thing I appreciate is how consistent your characters are, even when it doesn't paint them in a good light. Salyra is described by many people as stubborn but stubborn is one of those traits that I often see written with only the positive connotations in mind. A character is "stubborn" but it always works out for them, it only chafes the other characters who are bad guys or antagonist, it's more determination and it's tempered and righteous and leads to good outcomes because "you should never stop trying, never give up!", but like that's not proper stubbornness. Salyra is stubborn to the point of ruin, she charges forth with what she thinks is best with what seems to me is little regard for the input of others and it appears to have gone disastrously in many places but she just. keeps. going!!!

I'm having so many feelings about these characters omg. I have so many questions! Though at the forefront is does Salyra even love MC or does she just love the potential she saw in them, the plan she had for them, the symbol they were supposed to be? This ask is so long and for that I do apologize I just wanted to let you know how fantastic I think this story is and I guess express my undying love for the way you've written Salyra, even if it does break my heart lol

I'm really glad you're enjoying Ahlf and Salyra as characters. I never intended to make them this flawed or angsty, but as I wrote their scenes, their characters did become more than the idea I had for them and suddenly Ahlf was emotionally detached and Salyra was heading straight towards martyrdom. I like showcasing realistic characters, which is how I view Ahlf and Salyra. I've always enjoyed family dynamics that aren't always depicted as happy and perfect or the fights are trivial at best so this was a lot of fun for me to write such a complex and painful family.

I've always been stubborn myself, so I know that it can be more of a flaw than it can be a good thing. With Salyra, I based her on a lot of different leaders who would often be successful at rebellions but have really bad personal lives because they were so focussed on their ambitions that it got in the way of everything else. Salyra's best and worst quality is her stubbornness, it's what gotten her this far, but it's also what's ruined her personal relationships around her.

Salyra does love the MC, though you as a reader need to determine if she loves the MC because they're her child or because she can't separate the MC's existence from the plans she once had as them being a symbol of peace and unity 😅 It will depend on your playthrough and there is no right way to interpret her feelings towards the MC. As the writer, I can understand how she might seem to genuinely love the MC and how to others, she might seem like she's manipulating the MC or only loves the idea of them. So you'll need to ask yourself after weighing up her actions and words if it's enough to prove genuine love or not.

Please don't apologise for the long ask 💖 I enjoy reading everyone's take on the characters and the game. It's always my favourite part about sharing updates and the story with others so we can all gush about it together. Thank you for your support 😊

So I gotta ask and I don’t remember if anyone asked before, but was it originally planned for Ignis to always end up with Seeker or do it change overtime?

This is a bit complicated, but the short answer is 'Yes-ish'. Let me explain.

Ignis was always meant to be in love with Seeker. This has been the case since the very first draft I posted of the game back in 2021, one of the very first things you learn about her is that she is attracted to him, and he has yet to reciprocate.

And their relationship has always been an integral part of the story. The way Ignis and Seeker trust each other, the way they interact, and, being honest, and the way they both care for each other more than for the rest of the League combined has always been something I intended to be part of the story. Ignis and Seeker have the deepest relationship of the whole cast, they have changed each other, and, in more than one way, they complete each other. Ignis is the first light in Seeker's life since Victoria stopped being around, and Seeker is... probably the only reason Ignis is even around.

At the point the MC joins the team, I don't believe Ignis or Seeker could function without the other. They don't know how to not need each other any more.

There are two big reveals in Book 1 of AToH. One of them has to do with Aki and Forlorn, but the other is Seeker's, and approximately half of it is dedicated purely to Ignis's reaction, to her proving how inexorably the two of them are tied, and to showing that there exists nothing in the universe that will make them ever let go of each other.

And I made a mistake.

Originally, AToH was only going to have three romances: Aki, Latooni, and Nova. A lot has changed since that idea, but those are the three I always knew I wanted to write. I received a bit of backlash because of that, stuff like 'too few options', 'only one male RO?', and even complaints that Aki and Lat were too basic, or... too overused (I have played every game on Jason Hill's platform. There is no character in there like Aki).

I don't begrudge people who made those comments. Criticism is how authors grow, of course, and those comments helped me grow. I ended up creating Iris, expanding Mars' role, and sidelining Dark Star.

But I overcorrected. I began to consider if Ignis and Seeker's relationship couldn't be written platonically- after all, plenty of superhero stories make a big point of the bonds of friendship. Ignis and Seeker didn't have to be a successful Batman and Wonder Woman, they could just be Goku and Bulma, right?

Wrong. The more I thought about it, the more I realized the climax, the reveal, the characters themselves don't work without both being desperately in love. If I don't have Ignis and Kratis declare they love each other at the game's climax, then there is no point to writing the story. It took me a while to understand that, but I did, eventually.

But as you can obviously see, that didn't mean the MC's relationship with Ignis was scrapped.

And the fandom has a lot of takes about that. Some are subtle, some are not. Some are hostile, some are not. Some are rational pieces, others are impassioned comments.

But the one thing they all have in common is that they're wrong.

I am not writing the path as some sort of punishment, or exercise in hurting the reader. It's certainly not done because I want to scam whoever ends up reading the story, or because I 'don't understand what a RO is'.

I'm writing the Ignis RO because it serves the narrative. It is probably the path I spend the most time thinking about, it has the largest build-up, and it is the path that has the biggest pay-off in narrative weight.

If AToH was to have anything close to a 'canon' path, Ignis would be it.

Omg follow up on my other ask: I’d really love to know more about the whole creative process, like how you maintain the believability & essence of your characters in your stories, also how do you come up with the little nuances?? 😭 I feel like writing characters (especially maybe introverted ones) in a complex way can be so hard

You’re the first to ask me for writing advice so I’ve been looking forward to answering this 😆 Even though I just write for fun I love talking about creative processes. Sorry if this is long, but I could still discuss it even more lol. For you and anyone else, feel free to ask me more questions if you're curious! Always happy to talk about this.

Programs that I use are Google Docs (for that autosave feature baby, fuck writing on Tumblr), Grammarly (but I still find typos after posting rip), Theasaurus.com (I repeat words too much), any music app (IOU has its own playlist that I'll even listen to when I'm not writing), & Pinterest (for vibes + moodboards). I'm constantly switching between these tabs. When it comes to writing scenes I make sure it's something that engages me while writing and if it's boring to me, I'll scrap it or rework it after sitting on it for a bit. ✍️

Usually, if an un-written scene is haunting me over the course of several weeks, I have to write it; IOU Part 5 started with the scene where Heeseung can't hold himself back from kissing MC’s neck while dancing and then I just asked myself how did we get here, and what comes after? (Always easier said than done)

I have so much fun with stereotypes + tropes but I also love characters that are a little more grounded in reality; so I try to achieve that by imbuing them with characteristics/mannerisms that I’ve seen in people from irl experiences or myself. For these nuances, you can even get inspired by specific media/characters that you love to read/watch about.

I’d recommend making a list of your favorite characters + stories and jotting down a few bullet points of what you love about them, for whatever reasons. From there, you can create character dynamics that you enjoy, and if you enjoy writing about it, there are bound to be people who will enjoy reading it!

When I write, I draw a lot on experience, then I put a twist on it; it just comes easier that way to me. IOU is definitely pwp, but I like building up the tension a bit before giving out the goods hehe, that’s where characters come in with their weirdly unique selves to make the twist on reality happen.

It’s all about that balance to craft a character that works for your story and then the tension in their relationships with others. I'd say the tension between characters and their personal flaws is what makes something compelling to read.

I’m an introvert through and through, so my MC’s lean that way a lot lol. I’ll point out some examples of how I convey MC’s + Heeseung’s introversion below! (Gotta preface that not all introverts are relegated to this sort of behavior, this is just based on behaviors in myself and introverts I’ve come across) I've taken a class on personality psychology and used to dive deep into MBTI, which also helps.

Compare Heeseung’s interactions with MC vs Jay; he’s awfully stand-offish with Jay and reserved, but it's heightened due to jealousy. He’s an observant guy and tends to think/calculate before proposing anything— and of course, he’s extremely in tune with MC even when she’s not quite so with herself. Heeseung in IOU is learning how to be a bit more transparent/action-oriented with his feelings, but only where he believes it counts.

MC is shy and polite/friendly with Jay, but with Heeseung she teases him a bit more and lets down her guard without worrying about social niceties; but even then, she’s still a bit conservative with her true feelings. While she gets stuck in her thoughts often, Heeseung understands and knows how to draw her out of it.

She prefers her alone time to recharge over hanging out with a rambunctious Jake but makes an exception for Hee who has already won her over as a friend. MC's incredibly honest with Jake about her feelings though, but he values it even if it hurts. Still, he has to retaliate in his own little ways, and he excels at bringing out MC's trait of impulsivity which is... interesting.

Have I made myself laugh out loud writing? Yes. Can I remember when? No. Other that the smutty fishing puns in Overboard which I’ll share here.

“Perhaps I'll simply make you beg.”

“Oh, I'm not above begging. I happen to know you’re quite the catch, so it'll be worth it.”

“Are you making fishing jokes while I’m trying to seduce you?”

The smirk she gives him is telling as he pulls her leggings over her hips and bites into her flesh, making her jump slightly. “Oh! I thought I was supposed to nibble on your rod?”

“Emma,” he laughs breathlessly.

She breathes out a laugh as well as he drags his tongue along her folds, not quite touching her where she needs him. “You really know how to lure me in, what can I say.” He bites the inside of her thigh silently, making her laugh aloud and then stutter as his tongue finds her clit. He keeps it there only momentarily, moving away in favor of peppering soft kisses around her thighs and over her hips. “Stop teasing,” she whines with her eyes squeezed shut, and he can see her smile growing before she says, “or should I say… baiting.”

G/t anon over here, I'm very glad to hear you understand my point of view and tbh I 100% agree with Tioga being a sentient, intelligent being capable of consent ❤️ Truth be told I did check through the Harkness test more than once (and they successfully passed it every time ofc) while reading the fics and before sending the ask, and although it's still not entirely my cup of tea I appreciate that part a little more now that I've spoken with you about it ^^

It's also worth noticing that Tioga/Giratina in the Cor Unum series definitely isn't an entity like any other, they're a powerful divinity not unlike Arceus (just writing down their name makes me want to have them disappear ewww) and tbf it's quite sad and unfair that in the PLA game they kept such a huge difference in knowledge and sentience between the two. For example Giratina simply roars their cry and fights like a normal pokemon would in battle, while Arceus is able to communicate and have conversations with you (even tho it's highly possible that the real Arceus is the one speaking, not the vessel/part of themselves the player receives after defeating them at the Hall of Origin) and can unleash their power with ease in a complex, multilayered boss fight. Also, even Dialga and Palkia are shown being capable of communicating via telepathy with their respective clan leader, while with Giratina we only get some... off-screen dialogue between them and Volo, before PLA events and in the post-game? The writers at GameFreak are literally so biased tbh xD I'm getting off track here but you get what I'm saying, lol

Oderint Dum Metuant is just really good tbh! All the g/t interactions make it even more fun of course, and witnessing Volo being in distress pulled at my heartstrings too 🥺🥺 (Latios with his creepy hunger can fuck off btw, Latias is the superior sibling of the duo lol). Thankfully Tioga won against Carnifex, but omg the final chapter… aaaaaa the feels, when we finally catch up with how much time has passed since their fight, and what's been happening in the meantime while Tioga was asleep ;-;

Oh well, where to even begin xD I think it's basically canon how Arceus acts so mercilessly to Volo and mocks him too by favoring the player character instead of him (which isn't also completely true all the time btw, like the MC is literally unwillingly taken away from the present time and their family and friends, but Arceus never let them return home once they're done?? Like hello?? Who even does that!), but your version of Arceus is so cruel, sadistic and evil it could put Ghetsis Harmonia to shame and I like it xD I'm almost sure in saying they're the biggest divine bitch I've ever read about, lmfao xD

Also I absolutely get where your religious feelings come from, it must be very tough for you guys to deal with anything God-related if said God (whether they exist or not) is literally so apathetic they let anything happen to you and your ancestors for thousands of years :( it does resonate with Volo's story a lot tbf, taking also into account the fact that his people have disappeared from history (except him and Cogita ofc) and Arceus doesn't ever or even bring them up to the player :(( for this reason I'm sending you (and to Volo and Tioga too ofc) so many hugs! ❤️

HMMM yes i definitely agree oh my god. the other gods really and truly got so much more communication than giratina, who was just painted at this primal and chaotic force... but at the same time GF has them capable of enough thought to, uh, come up with this whole plan of giving volo the spooky plate and having him collect all the plates so that it can cross over into our world and challenge arceus? like, pick a side, gamefreak. lol. how giratina got done dirty really did upset me as a long, LONG-time giratina fan (i've adored giratina ever since platinum first came out) not to mention that volo and giratina are supposed to, you know, have the same convictions and the same "heart" (hence cor unum in general) yet giratina is painted as this sorta feral beast not really capable of doing anything except for battling alongside volo... i really, really wish we had gotten more scenes of volo and giratina interacting, and volo speaking to them, and/or them speaking back, because there's no way volo just saw this fuck-all big dragon on the other side of our world and was like ah yes i know exactly what to do now. not to mention his comment about "i was the one to feed you the power you needed to take on arceus" like THEY MAKE IT A THROWAWAY LINE AND IT'S LIKE... WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT!!! did he transfer over his energy at regular intervals to nurse giratina (who likely had nearly given up by this point) back to (emotional, if not physical) health?? why don't we get any scenes of volo exhausted as hell from giving giratina energy and them comforting him?? WHERE ARE THESE SWEET, HUMANE MOMENTS, GAMEFREAK?? but they probably figure that makes him "too sympathetic" or some shit. give me a break. where are the hidden tapes GF i know you have them

jgdhjdg to be fair in NMSF ingo is a little more reserved than you're used to due to being in hisui so long (didn't he seem more quiet to you?? i couldn't get that reserved ingo out of my head. god) but yeah i fucking love the submas twins and i was so excited to include them. i do have another little spinoff type thing that happens after the end of pater peccavi that is of the "ingo is zekrom, emmet is reshiram" variety where tioga and volo comfort the twins (but mostly emmet because he is their "train cutie" meaning they. er. Have Relations occasionally. and dote on him a lot and call him "emmie" lol) but i haven't posted it yet so NMSF and the end of pater peccavi are currently the only bits where the submas come into play... but more later :p

I'M SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED DEUS NOLENS EXITUS god it's one of my proudest works. i fucking loved writing it so much. you hit the damn nail on the head, volo taking everything on to himself and how fucking sad it is, like, you want to let him and tioga and everyone else live in peace, but at the same time it's obvious from how his priestesses react that volo taking it all onto himself is not okay with him, and they would all much rather experience their own suffering than have him take it onto himself... tioga getting their memories back and being upset volo lobotomized them hurt so fucking much to write lmao especially because they are COMPLETELY AWARE that he did it because he loves them, but taking away the part of them that is so invested in protecting him? is something they can't abide. which sucks because volo wants so badly to be able to protect them the way they protect him, because, like, he's in love, and that's just what you do when you're in love... but. augh. anyway

IRONICALLY LATIOS IS ACTUALLY MY FAVORITE OF THE SIBLINGS but also this particular latios would be pokemon heroes's latios's father (the one that died that bianca and lorenzo talk about in the beginning of the movie, the one that movie-latios and latias fly around with in the end) which is solely because heroes!latios's dad is revered as this self-sacrificing hero and i think it would be really fucking funny if, like, he definitely was a hero, no argument there, but also was just like. irritating as hell and had a petty feud with giratina. i dunno i was just like god this would be funny as fuck and serve to be like "hey yeah heroes are heroes and he did a great thing but like he was also a person, and people are flawed, and he had this stupid schoolyard animosity towards giratina" LMAO. still love him. def not going for a "people who do great things don't deserve the accolades because they're people too and they do shitty things", more of a "wouldn't it be fucking hysterical if" sort of thing LOL

On weird (and annoying) tropes

Let's talk about some tropes in the anime and manga industry.

Sheesh, even though anime can be real fun, a lot of Japan animators or mangakas are such weirdos aren't they? It's almost like they live in another dimension, firstly because of the cultural differences (being them on the other side of the globe and all) but also because of their own distorted perception of the world around them. Today I'll focus on one aspect in particular, "weird tropes", for one reason in particular.... the audience likes them and I find it creepy xD.

Of course covering them all in just one post seems impossible so I'll just focus on two that are the most common.

First off... Let's tackle tsunderes. Like, seriously? It's not like you like the MC but you're gonna hit him (or her) or insult him just because he said something you didn't like or they hang around with someone other than yourself? The deal with this kind of character is not their existence, you see, if a show comes and manages their tsunderes to make actual plot points and maybe tell a story that touches delicate subjects like, I dunno, insecurities, family problems and relationship violence it would actually be alright, it serves the purpose of the story, it's telling something. But when their existence solely serves the purpose of filling the checkboxes to making a "comedy" anime or a romance one, it gets terrible results. Almost every show that falls in these categories has a tsundere. Yelling, hitting and making the "uh-oh, you entered the room and I was half naked" joke (joke that has to die once and for all pleaaase). What's the point? Does it actually fulfill fantasies of people? "I like that girl, she treats me bad, but maybe she is just a tsundere in real life" Dude c'mon, eeeeeven if that, for some big old miracle from the heavens it's actually true, you. Are. Allowing. Violence. That ain't cute, that ain't good. In short, tsunderes need either a makeover or completely disappear, tropes get old with time. Moreover, if we look at anime like a medium that more andore kids have access to, it gets worse. We're teaching them that that's supposed to be cute, that that's an actual startegy to interact with people. It's gotta stop.

Well, now let's get to real business, because even though I find tsunderes annoying, they can't compare to actual liking felony material.....Let's discuss lolis.

Where do I even begin? Calling the police because you're acting suspicious if you actually enjoy when animes oversexualize minors? Trying to read your Google history just to make sure this isn't escalating? It's just a show I know. An animated show even, but there are doors that should remain closed even for shows, at least when, again, they are not trying to actually tell a traumatic story of how this little girl or boy gets abused. She's 400 years old? Dude that's just an argument to stop looking at the real problem: they look like little girls and boys. What you are liking and watching is WRONG, no other way around it. Should little boys and girls be erased from anime? Of course not, there are plenty of awesome stories that run around the friendships or paternal bonds, or they are just silly comedy shows with toddlers. I'll he the first to put up examples, I loved barakamon. One of the main characters is a little girl, that's it, she does little girl stuff and annoys the adults. Period. The problem is when is managed poorly and in a perverted way. It's good to note that this isn't a problem exclusive to kids, I'm also pinpointing ecchi anime that focuses on middle or high schoolers. Why In hell would you draw them in school uniforms and say they are 15 to then take of their clothes and pretend it's hot? They. Are. *Still*. Kids. C'mon. Addressing this is important because one common argument is " I only watched this when I was at school" or "I don't watch it because of that, i watch it for the plot" Okay, you know what? I buy ya. But damn there are a ton of freaks that do watch it for the wrong reasons, you only have to go through reddit for a few hours. Sexualizing minors is wrong, and it doesn't matter that is "another" culture, globalization is closing gaps, more people have access to that content and we gotta focus on our ethics. Let's not support pedophiles please. Thank you.

the second he sees your dog, he’s broken. like stiff and unmoving in general. and if your dog barks, he might walk out the door. he loves that you introduced him to your dog, but that also doesn’t mean he isn’t totally scared. which kind of looks dumb because his finger wouldn’t fit in the puppy’s mouth so he couldn’t be bitten either way.

“does it bite?”

“no.”

“it looks like it’ll bite me.”

“it won’t bite.”

honestly really terrified of being bitten, you have to convince him that it’s fine. he’ll reach a finger out and if your dog even does so much as move, he’s taking his hand back and running behind you.

“i think your dog hates me.”

“it doesn’t hate you”

“mc, it’ll bite me”

“no it’s not”

eventually he feels more comfortable with your dog and likes to teach it tricks. honestly very responsible. sometimes you just find artem asleep with your dog sitting on him and idk man that’s the good times in life <3 babies your dog so much. pls your dog probably likes him more too

“hey artem, let’s go watch a movie today”

“but what about the dog?”

“what?”

“the dog’s gonna get so lonely...”

would rate him 10/10, will occasionally treat your dog better than you tho

plays with your dog, no hesitation. the second your dog and luke meets, there’s that tiny moment where their brains just merged together

probably comes over for your dog. he’ll visit you with a big bag, and you’re thinking, ‘oh maybe luke got me some snacks’. nope. wrong. look in the bag and all there is is dog food and toys.

“oh, i just really missed-”

“me?”

“yeah, of course. but also i really missed your dog.”

calls your dog ‘his baby’ so idk you’re both parenting this dog now. like genuinely treats your dog like his child. likes to carry your dog like a baby, they’re so cute together tho

“luke, honey, where’s my dog-”

“our baby is sleeping right now.”

but also he baby talks to your dog, and refers to the both of you as ‘mom and dad’ so now the puppy responds to ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ now. honestly it’s sickeningly domestic and fluffy. pls <3

Wheel of Time - Sad Rand noises

This is post 13 in The Wheel of Time Read - see the previous post - covering the prologue and chapters 1-9

A few weeks ago, I started reading The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan’s sprawling fantasy series. And because I have nothing better to do, I decided to post my thoughts on the internet, a few chapters at a time. Right now, I am at book three - The Dragon Reborn. This post talks about my first impressions of the prologue and chapters 1 (Waiting) through 9 (Wolf Dreams). Chapter summaries can be found here (I’m not putting links to the individual chapters, I don’t want to venture too far into the wiki).

Well. I'm back from my little break. I would've liked to say that I read a bunch of other books or picked up some new obsession. Instead, I rewatched my comfort shows, watched hours of lefty video essays and stared into empty spaces. Time to come back.

The prologue, as in the last two books, serves to inform us as to the larger picture of the setting, what's going on in the background to set things into motion, etc. before focusing on our protagonists and the stuff happening to them. This time, though, the events of the prologue have direct impacts on the MCs, a testament to the fact that these people have indeed been fully thrust into the larger world around them rather than having adventures in their own little quest-bubble with not much outside interaction.

... which is why I'm a bit let down by the fact that the DR camp was so isolated and did basically nothing until the attack. Sure, the Watsonian reasoning was sound enough. I'm pretty sure the Doylian of it was that it gave some breathing room to the characters to explore the ramifications of Rand declaring himself the Dragon. But this kind of stuff can get... idk, sort of tiring. It was alleviated a bit by the POV being Perrin rather than Rand - a layer of mystery as to his thought process at the moment was necessary.

Because let's be real, as much as I love Rand, I can't bear to imagine how badly the guy would give himself shit about being stranded in this place like a sitting duck, not being able to help even those close to him when Trollocs attack, let alone those far away who have declared for him. Even if he really couldn't have done anything about it. Add to that, he can't really control saidin yet, and also causes literal earthquakes, so it's safe to say my man isn't in the best of mental states. I really like the way there is implicit trust among him and Perrin. He's visibly more relaxed and allows himself to express at least a little of his thoughts when he's with Perrin.

That doesn't mean Perrin is just our outsider POV to Rand either. He's got his wolf stuff going on that he's trying to suppress, plus killing the two Whitecloaks still haunts him. His dreams are of wolves and various Forsaken, including Lanfear. Poor guy's got almost as much on his plate as Rand. The encounter with the dead Wolfbrother at Jarra only serves to compound his fears. Inevitably, his arc is going to be about embracing them instead of fighting them, but Perrin angst is always great to read. I've said it before, but Perrin is such a uniquely compelling character. You rarely get his kind as protagonists in most fantasy.

And it is through him that we learn about this book's plot device. It is a Significant Sword, of course, because we gotta tick that off in the fantasy bingo. I don't know if this counts as disturbing the purity of the Read or whatever (if anyone really cares about that) but I did see the cover for the last book, and Rand's holding a sword that matches the description of Callandor. If it is indeed that, it's safe to say that we are officially out of the introduction phase of the series and getting into the thick of the conflict.

Things got infinitely more interesting at Jarra. Rand ta'veren-ness making waves in the whole town. My guy can't even lay low in peace, he leaves a trail of weddings and Whitecloaks. No wonder all of you talk about the amount of trauma he goes through.

I really love the new dynamic between Perrin and Moiraine in this book. Moiraine remains the mom of the group, but her kids have got hormones now! She's probably annoyed as hell, thinking 'this is the mature one, dammit, can't imagine what I'll have to bear with the angry one'. At least she has Lan.

I'm really interested in the dynamics of this dream world that Perrin goes into. So far he's encountered Lanfear, the other Forsaken (did he mention his name?) as well as Hopper the wolf. There are also dangerous things in there, but Perrin still knows he's dreaming. Did Rand's dreams since book one happen in this sort of space? Do all dream worlds have the same mechanics? Are they even separate worlds, or are they the same world that whatever evil force wishes to use it to torment whatever unlucky schmuck? Hopefully, this stuff is answered.

We did get one little teeny weeny Rand POV of a paradigm-shifting character change caused by severe mental stress. You know, just another day. (I get a vibe that the stuff that happened there was in a dream, dunno why)

Also it's super funny how Whitecloak captain dude thinks the Two Rivers is a den of Darkfriends, kinda like a Satanic village. Oh man that place is in for some suffering, isn't it? Creepy dude who knows who the Emond's Fielders are is Creepy.

Okok gathered my thoughts now somehow, so here’s my thoughts (ish) on the last chapter of Pomefiore!

Ok, Leona says something interesting: he says that he suspects something happened in the stadium (from how he acted, it seems that he suspects an overblot occurred) and mentions that it was strange that vids of the rehearsals and onwards were gone, but backup videos showing what happened in the stadium are automatically uploaded to the cloud anyway, and he’ll leave that to Ignihyde. What a mood lmao

Ngl I’m glad that we don’t interact with Malleus much in this update for petty reasons

And then the winners

Lmao is it a thing for performers to be able to vote as well? I thought that wasn’t allowed. Oh well

Man, this was the part that really hit me like a ton of bricks: RSA winning. I guess that it’s a way of saying that “yes heroes win in the end” but it’s still kinda sad because we watched everyone, especially Vil, work so hard. But well, life is like that.

Everyone feeling emotional though;; Kalim ahhdhsjjdjsjd I thought he was gonna be the mature one who comforts Epel BUT HE CRIES LOUDER AHHAAHHAHAHAHA this boi I love him

Vil having tears in his eyes was so ;;; I’m glad Chemi did the whole ‘character with tear textures in their eyes’ because I wouldn’t have been ready otherwise lmao

Can I just say, I’m so glad that they show the boys crying over their loss? I always appreciate it when media does show boys crying because it combats the whole toxic masculinity thing.

General thoughts: I couldn’t process this update very well because of NRC losing to RSA? By one vote tooooo

Not that I’m hating Rook for it, and if anything, I like that they kept him in character in regards to that because Rook will go for what he found beautiful. But it also brings up a lot of questions between him and Neige now.

But as for the whole chapter, the pacing felt off. It went off to a great start, but towards Vil’s overblot, it felt rather rushed. I’m also slightly miffed that they pretty much sidelined Epel after the late December update, which contributed as well to the pacing of the chapter. There’s a lot of contradicting ideas in the story and some even felt like they were brought up but never expounded upon? Maybe I’ll read the tls from the beginning and see if I need a refresh on the first half so I can connect it better with the second half, but right now, each part feels disconnected.

Aside from that, I like chapter 5! I love the developing dynamic between Vil and Epel, I love the amount of lore they gave, just mmmmmmm food

Now, it’s time for us to wait for the next announcement to be given out on January 31! What will it be, Valentines event? Who are the cards? Please let Floyd shine Twst.

the thing with the series right now, is that im getting major mixed signals.

personally i get the people who are saying this is going a bit too smoothly and deku will hit a roadblock soon. because that's the way i feel too. deku's general appearance rn feels unsettling and unnatural to me at least, so im waiting for the moment where something is gonna give and everyone else will be re-introduced. im down for that.

but at the same time, it feels kind of disingenuous, because deku's not really doing it alone is he? he's got his ghost buddies that are at no real risk of injury and pretty much all think positively of him. they're all good people helping him grow and helping him do the right thing. on top of that he's got the top 3 heroes AND all might shadowing him. can that really be called doing it alone? it's not like deku ran away and is homeless, it's not like the vestiges are some shady figures tempting him to do questionable shit. nope, he's just training "solo" while still relying on teamwork albeit indirectly (shindou's attack against muscular). deku hasn't gone dark or edgy or lost his mind. he seems a bit sadder and more serious, definitely traumatized from everything in the war, but he is still smiling, and his mindset seems fine, if a little heavy leaning into the chosen one role.

we hope the narrative will eventually frame deku ditching his friends as wrong, but it's at most a shitty friend move, not a life altering mistake, not when he does still have support. we hope his focus on doing things solo will be framed as a flaw, but it would feel disingenuous since he's not doing things solo. he's just ditched his old support system for a new one, and the reason it feels so frustrating for me is that you've got this huge cast of already developed characters i care about being seemingly "replaced" (even if temporarily) by a new cast of characters (half of whom introduced in what we assume is near-endgame) with in comparison paper thin personalities that all fall into a slightly different brand of good boy.

maybe horikoshi will somehow get me to care about banjou and whoever four was beyond a surface level "oh im cool with him being on screen" but i'll still feel bad because it would mean splitting up the panel time between even more characters in an already huge cast, and eating up everyone else's moments.

maybe this could have worked if the other users had some more spice in their personalities, provided more conflict for izuku. but they don't. they're all nice and they're all love him. which isn't bad. it's just a bit boring. it's like those harry potter fanfics i used to write as a 12 year old where voldemort never existed and everyone was just happy.

and it's very telling that number 2 created such a big buzz in the fandom specifically because he reminds us of a certain someone down to the way he kicks down doors. it's almost like the moment a character with a certain personality shows up we all get excited because we see the potential for conflict and intriguing storyline. and it's not bakugou's appearance that facilitates this (i guarantee reactions would be similar even if 2 kept his personality while looking nothing like baku. the appearance is just the bonus) but rather his character. i know he's gonna provide more narrative struggle and therefore growth for deku than someone like banjou is. disagreement drives a story forward.

and that circles back to my main problem with the current arc. it's not that i hate deku or think he's boring. i just prefer his interactions with other characters and want to see him around people that will actually challenge him. the reason i like having bakugou around deku is that he provides important balance. that's why i found him entertaining in the ofa tea times. the moment he joined he started pushing them. deku and all might had been pussyfooting around each other a lot and bakugou comes in and instantly challenges them, brings a worldview to the table that's uniquely his and that contradicts both deku and all might. he brings conflict. bootleg not bakugou does that too, but even this in a subdued manner (apparently yoichi just had to flirt with him a little and he was down). whereas everyone else is just the happy circle of good person trademarked flowerchildren who can all respect each other's opinions. WHERE IS THE SPICE?

perhaps if i was more invested in deku's character or the fight level up aspect of the story i'd be more down for this. but as we are now i just read every chapter and think "... ok". i was discussing it with my brother yesterday aswell, and he agreed that there's gotta be some more spice to the ofa plot than this. it was such an interesting power at first with so much potential for mystery and intrigue. i liked it even after sixquirks popped up because i liked deku unlocking backwhip. horikoshi did a fantastic job with that scene and i could feel for izuku's frustration at being seemingly put back to square one with a volatile power after watching him struggle so much with getting it under control the first time.

but then the charm was lost because everything started going way too smoothly and all the windows for possible conflict were being rapidly shut, from the possibility of evil/unwilling users to the dilemma of giving that type of power to a kid in the first place.

just idk. sorry this got so long i just have a lot of feelings lmao 😭 i hope ill end up eating my words and that hori actually has something great planned that ive missed the clues for but well, i don't have high hopes.

I fully agree. This covers all my frustration points that I have voiced before.

And exactly the fact that he’s teamed up with ghost friends and top 3 is what makes this so frustrating. He REPLACED his friends. In order to protect them, he just ditched them, and I wouldn’t care if we would get the UA scenes in parallel, but we are not getting anything.

They just POOF disappeared from the story, and with the MC being seemingly on track, we have no clue when we would see them next. And what’s worse, it feels like they don’t matter in this post-war world. Not to the story, not to Deku, not to All Might, not to anyone.

And yeah, maybe it will lead to something, but that doesn’t change the fact that the pacing is horrible, the OFA development is insultingly dumb and there is just no sense of accomplishment.

Deku gets like candy powers and abilities that other characters GRIND years for. Bakugou’s first updrade in hundreds of chapters was this new explosion speed boost that he earned by sacrificing his life and before we even get to see it in a fight, it already looks like a rusty old car compared to Deku’s full-extra flying batmobile.

Even if we cut back to the students, their abilities will just feel too pedestrian and overshadowed by Deku. Which is why I’m losing hope that we’d see them fight ever again or get any role or development other than whatever group battle is planned for them in the end. And of course a few extra panels for the main kids.
