better safe than damned (E), 18k, andreil || a smuttier au of an au with demon!neil and witch!andrew and tentacles lol it sounds depraved, and the tags make it sound really depraved but half that word count is aftercare and exploring ones comfort zones and sexuality? so its personal and one of my best written smutfics imo

im terrible at boosting my own stuff because i never feel like i explain myself well enough to sell my ideas or fics which is definitely reflected in my summaries that i have often been told "do not do the fic any justice" lol that and im horrified of people saying theyre silly but at least a few people think theyre pretty neat! :^)

If the foxes went to summer camp as kids

So I was a camp councilor at a summer camp that had a mix of special need kids (autism, adhd, odd etc.) with kids from foster care and families that aren't well off.

Let me tell you these kids are wild and here are some of the things they did which I feel like our foxes would do as well.

Neil would definitely kidnap a bunch of frogs from a bog and hide them in hair like my menaces did. The kid that inspired this also had a blonde little partner in crime, so there you got it. Andreil as kids would've kidnapped frogs and given them ridiculous names.

Kevin would've become so depressed after losing at a game he'd grab a stick and draw in the sand. Then a kid wouldn't see his drawing and accidentally step on a single line (cough Allison cough) and boy would be bursting into tears and gesture at the sand and pretend stab himself with his stick.

Kevin would've also been such a dramatic bitch that when one of the kids rough house a bit with them he'd burst into tears and turn red in the face as he dramatically acted out every single thing that happened to him. This includes slapping himself in the face and choking himself out while the councilors just look on tired as hell.

Matt would be trying to ply extra ice cream from camp councilors in the middle of the night by walking out of the hut with his plushie while they were discussing the day and then rant about how pretty the stars are. He'd actually manage to talk quite some time while the councilors just wanted to cry, but had to be nice despite it being 1am.

Andrew stashes a pile of candy under his pillow on the first night knowing he isn't sleek but not giving a fuck and tosses the wrappers on the ground to annoy his roommates.

On the last night the councilors give the kids as much candy/food as possible so they'll sugar crash. Matt fell asleep on a pile of chicken nuggets.

Aaron got really into building a tower of sticks and marshmallows and sabotaged other teams (cough Neil cough) by kicking a football at them, yet somehow hitting his own tower in devastation.

Neil 'accidentally' tied Matt up to a wooden post and left him to fend for himself.

Aaron gets so pissed of at Seth at some point he tells Seth that he hopes he becomes infertile as he kicks him in the nuts and runs away like his life was on the line (it was)

Allison would be one of those girls that tell the councillors every bit of gossip there is and puts campers against each other by spreading all these rumors just for fun.

Neil stole the matches from an activity and sleeps with them in his sleeping bag. The councilors only found out on the last day they were dealing with a pyromaniac who had the means to an end when they were helping him clear up his bag.

Neil is somehow one of those wild kids that just knows their way around everywhere, so he can't possibly get lost in the woods.

Nicky does get lost in the woods and would just want his ipad or something nonstop.

Neil runs away every time he's about to get medicated for the day and dan helps chase him down because she can't handle hyperactive Neil without his meds (I could see him having adhd maybe and Andrew as autistic)

Andreil would be one of those camp couples that somehow are in a relationship when they've known each other for less than a week and are like fucking toddlers. They're disgustingly cute and give each other dumb nicknames and exchange phone numbers. They definitely changed their profile pics to a selfie of the two of them together and will get mercilessly bullied by their guardians.

Hi! I had a question about the timeline of your timelessverse kandreil fic: after their being together for a while post kevthea’s divorce was Kevin ending things (ik it wasn’t exactly a break up because they were still more than friends, but along those lines) around the time Amelia was 18-20 and looked around Andreil’s age… because woof. That makes sense but also is sooo… deeply sad, especially imo because with the longevity of Kevin and Andrew’s relationship and how it’s developed over time and how Andrew is as a character I imagine that being so hard to hear, and almost being like putting down the growth and what he and they’ve been able to do and be together that’s so beyond what they were in a place for in college to focus on something superficial even though that’s not the case at all obviously. Unless I did the math on that wrong completely lol

Oh no, you’re absolutely right, that's exactly it. Kevin's only human, and while Andrew and Neil know how their brains work (they're timeless, both their mental and physical age at the same time in a... well, inhuman way), Kevin doesn't. All he sees is a grown man with gray hairs dating two college students (and part of him wants them to remember him young too, how he was).

It also doesnt help that around that time they begin to pull certain identify fraud scams and one of them includes them being "adopted" (cant remember off the top of my head if Kevin or Nicky at this point, would have to check my notes, but someone does... maybe Aaron?).

But yeah, your math's perfect.

kevaaron headcanons:

aaron lays out kevin's clothing for him after late night practices so he doesn't have to find them when he's tired and sore after a shower

kevin brings aaron snacks and water when he's staying up late studying for big exams because he knows aaron will forget to eat otherwise

they have the same taste in music, so they have mutliple shared spotify playlists that they listen to together on long bus rides to games

matt figures out theyre dating after stalking kevin's spotify and finding a suspicious amount of collaborative playlists with aaron

kevin always wears his sport socks on the correct feet, and will fold aarons socks for him to make sure each pair has a right and a left sock even though theyre all the same color

because aaron is a premed, whenever kevin feels slightly weird he'll immediately ask aaron to diagnose him with something "aaron i think im dying my elbow bone pops out weird when i move it" "babe, you're hypermobile. that's normal."

whenever kevin has to go to pr stuff for the exy team he'll text aaron and ask him to make up an emergency to get him out of it "can i tell whymack i just found out your pregnant and need to take you to the doctor. i want to leave." "kevin. no. do not tell your dad that, just smile and look pretty for 30 more minutes and then you can come back to the dorm and watch supernatural with me."

kevin told neil that he wanted to go on a double date with him and andrew to introduce them to his boyfriend, so they both dragged their respective twin to a diner on campus without telling them why. kevin told andrew he was looking forward to being his inlaw, aaron was appalled while andrew thought it was some convuluted shovel talk because kevin and neil are brotherly or whatever. it wasn't until neil and andrew are driving away that neil goes "you handled that surprisingly well, i thought you'd care more about kevin fucking your brother"

after coming to terms with their relationship andrew is actually kevaaron's #1 fan, but he'd never admit it. kevin will randomly find vouchers for free pumpkin patch tickets, or laser tag or other popular date spots. andrew will never admit its him, but multiple people have seen him put stuff in kevin's wallet.

whenever the foxes have boardgame nights kevin and aaron cheat so much. the foxes thought andrew and neil were bad, but kevin and aaron are so much worse. andreil would just have their weird little silent conversations, but kevaaron just blatantly cheat. "hey babe, when matt's not looking can you look at his cards. I'll tell you what weapon the murderer used if you do." "ok yeah gimme a second" "guys we can hear everything you're saying, kevin get away from matt right now."

kevin is weirdly competitive about everything, including his relationship with aaron. matt holds open a door for dan, and kevin immadeatly offers to carry all of aaron's belongings. neil buys andrew ice cream, and kevin bakes aaron oatmeal cookies. allison buys her and renee matching water bottles, and kevin buys him and aaron matching tracksuits. once the foxes catch on they purposfully start doing stuff for their significant other in front of kevin to see what he will do in retaliation. dan buys matt fresh produce from a farmers market, and kevin tries to make a window planter to grow vegetables in which falls off after he overwaters the seeds he planted and closes his window too hard.

aaron has a very intricate face routine, while kevin has never washed his face and manages to have no acne. kevin eventually gets a pimple because he's a college athlete who sweats every day and aaron shows him how to wash his face and moisturize and use pimple patches and all the other fun stuff that normal people who aren't blessed with godly genetics have to do.

kevin loves sitting on aaron. aaron will be trying to play a video game and kevin will just sit on him. aaron will be studying on the couch and kevin will lay on top of him. if aaron is sitting down kevin will try to sit on him. and aaron loves it. the foxes thought it was cute at first but now they kind of hate it because holy shit why do they love each other so much. "kevin get off of my brother right now, i dont want to see any gay shit jesus christ" "your boyfriend was literally spoon feeding you ice cream ten minutes ago, shut the fuck up"

so aaron isn't the biggest fan of neil's relationship with his brother

he has made that very clear. to everyone

is he glad that andrew is a bit less murderous now? yes, of course

is he upset that andrew's dating the guy who brought a mob war upon the foxes? just a smidge

despite all his... reservations, aaron can tell that whatever andrew and neil have, it isn't just "hate sex"

(granted, aaron doesn't want to spend much time considering his brother's sex life in the first place, but that's beside the point)

but no matter how annoying josten may be, he does want to have a decent relationship with his brother by the end of college

and unfortunately, that includes moderately tolerating his brother's loudmouth boyfriend

the very boyfriend who forced andrew and aaron to have joint therapy sessions

and look, aaron isn't as stubborn as he acts, he can acknowledge that the therapy sessions are helping

he would just... never admit it to josten's face. the man has enough of an ego as it is

anyways, dobson had told him weeks ago that in order to start understanding the whole of his brother, he had to be willing to accept all the different parts of andrew

and that entails spending time with the people andrew is close with

aaron likes renee enough. she's a bit too happy for his taste, but she's not too bad

aaron wants to kick kevin in the balls whenever he lays his eyes on him, which he is forced to do far too often in his humble opinion

and then there's neil, who aaron should probably start making amends with

dobson (unfortunately) agrees with that idea

so aaron starts spending more time with neil —walking to classes, studying, teaching neil how to play video games (for someone with such solid reflexes on court, neil is shockingly bad at figuring out game controllers)

(he's also 90% sure andrew told josten why aaron was hanging out with him all of a sudden, considering the slightly limited snark neil speaks to him with now)

and much to his chagrin, aaron actually kinda... enjoys hanging out with neil

he's sarcastic. annoying. moderately threatening. neil would be the ideal bro if he wasn't literally dating aaron's brother

(oh, and the mob war thing. can't forget about the mob war thing)

but maybe aaron is being the slightest bit presumptuous

because that week, dobson has to push back their appointment to thursday evening instead of wednesday afternoon

neil offers to drive aaron and andrew over to Reddin, saying that he was going over to the nearby cafe to work on some project anyways

so neil and andrew have their weird eye-contact conversation thing at every stoplight. aaron sticks to just texting katelyn.

he's so engrossed in his phone he barely realizes when they've stopped, and then wonders why andrew hadn't told him to get out yet

he glances up, ready to scramble out of the car, when he witnesses the single craziest moment of his life

neil and andrew, oblivious to aaron, are staring at each other. very intensely. it's a bit disconcerting how long they can keep their eyes open for

(maybe aaron should go into optometry, for his brother's sake)

anyway.

so aaron slowly holds onto the door handle, about to leave the car, when neil goddamn josten kisses his brother. ON THE NOSE

and his brother is blushing. BLUSHING

aaron's mind comes to a halt. what. is. happening.

he practically leaps out of the car, trying to pull his jaw back up from where it dropped as andrew emerges from the car and walks towards dobson's office, ears pink

(oh god. does aaron look like that when katelyn is around? that's embarrassing as hell)

shit. aaron had betted against andrew and neil on the kiss bet. nicky must have known something he didn't, considering how excited he looked that day...

bastard, he texts nicky with no explanation, hoping it leaves his cousin floundering in confusion

and fine. maybe josten isn't that bad for his brother

but he's also the reason why aaron is going to be in crippling debt soon

but. if he and neil become closer, surely he'd have the insider information on his brother's relationship

hmm. if he plays his cards right, this new, tolerable almost-friendship with josten might actually help him to win some money in the future...

The Foxes Realizing They Don’t Need to Worry About Neil and Andrew’s Relationship (Part 5)

Aaron

Aaron does not like Neil

In his defense in less than a year Neil managed to piss of many people, including the fucking yakuza and cause so much property damage

I mean the guy shows up and everybody loves him

The upperclassmen and Nicky pretty much adopt Neil

Kevin is obsessive in his teaching of Neil

and Andrew, Andrew has Neil ride shotgun and they spend all that time together on the roof

Aaron is the only one that thinks Neil is going to hurt Andrew and not the other way around

Aaron is stuck the stupid fucking deal and Neil is getting all of this attention from Andrew that Aaron so desperately wants

Then Aaron finds out they are dating hate fucking

and he sees an opportunity

because there is no way Andrew actually cares about Neil fucking Josten

so he uses that as leverage

Aaron says if you get Neil I get Katelyn when Andrew decides to keep Neil Aaron hears I’m picking Neil over you

He trusts Neil about as far as he can throw him

So at the cabin he tests Neil

He suggests Neil is only with Andrew because Andrew is easy

Aaron gets punched (it hurts Neil more than it hurts him)

but it’s enough for Aaron to go from actively distrusting to just generally cautious/suspicious

It takes years

and therapy

and the twins living on opposite ends of the country (Aaron in Chicago, Andrew in Oregon

but they heal

Eventually when the twins are on their monthly video call (because they do that now) (because Katelyn and Neil conspired)

Andrew is just staring at the screen while Aaron talks

and Neil walks into view

and when Aaron pauses Neil says by the way Andrew and I are transferring to [Chicago team name]

Neil walks away

Aaron chokes on his coffee

Andrew does not elaborate

When Andreil make the move they stay with Katelyn and Aaron while the look for a place

and when they get the place painted

Eventually Aaron and Andrew’s monthly video call turns into a monthly dinner (also thanks to Katelyn and Neil conspiring)

who hosts changes every month

Aaron still doesn’t really like Neil

but he sees that Neil makes Andrew destructive and joyless Minyard happy

and he sees that Katelyn and Neil are friends

they meet at least twice a month to discuss the challenges that come with being married to one of the Twinyards

what makes you like andreil? it seems to me that they have a lot of problematic/abusive elements to their relationship, so i was a bit confused when you said you liked andreil but not kandrew/kandreil

well i mean,, i simply don't agree

i think that andrew and neil have an incredibly balanced, incredibly healthy relationship. one that's honestly changed my personal views of romance and what i want out of a partnership

in my post analyzing kandreil i included a lot of details about what i like about andreil for contrast, because i felt that neil and kevin's relationships with andrew were very much supposed to contrast each other to show why andrew and neil's was successful while andrew and kevin's wasn't

i like the way andreil inspire each other to be better, to recover from their trauma, but i also like the way they're respectful of however that recovery happens to play out. they're each willing to allow the other to dictate the terms of engagement and support the decisions the other makes, and the help they offer each other follows the path they've each chosen for themselves

i'm not entirely sure what you think these problematic/abusive elements are to their relationship in all honesty. i will say, however, that i think the characters in aftg are very complicated, and none of them are ever 100% right or wrong about things. they all have their perspectives and their pasts that inform their actions and they think and react in ways consistent with that. additionally, several characters like neil and andrew are still right in the middle of a very traumatic period in their lives

that is to say, i think that there are some "problematic" things going on their lives (not a particularly useful word here imo), but their relationship with each other and the support and clarity they offer each other is instrumental in them each working to fix and improve those harmful things in their life, rather than in continuing or worsening them

also this blog is like 90% andreil so i'm a little... surprised that you're surprised that i like it. especially because i have said that i mostly ignore the ships i don't like

Tight-Knit Family

Aftg Falsettos AU, in which Wymack is Marvin, Stuart is Whizzer, Abby is Trina, Betsy is Mendel, Kevin is Jason and Andreil are the lesbians from next door.

Betsy adopted Andrew when he was seven. Then after finding out about Aaron and Nicky she adopted them too.

Nathan killed Mary when she tried running away with Neil. Stuart is a very successful businessman who killed Nathan and adopted Neil. The Moriyamas give permission to Stuart in exchange for him helping them for the next ten years.

Stuart does that from England, but after a while they need him in the US. He brings Neil with him since Neil's still a minor and Stuart's his legal guardian and they stay in Millport, Arizona. Neil goes to school there for a year.

Kayleigh went to Wymack with Kevin one day and told him that Kevin was his son. Then she disappeared and no one heard from her ever again. Wymack married Abby because he thought Kevin needed a mom.

Kevin recruits Neil the same way and he agrees right away. They haven't met before and Neil isn't on the run. He's always loved Exy. The reason he didn't resist going to the US was because of Exy.

It's Neil's second year of college, and everything goes more or less the same way, except Andrew never drugs Neil. There's nothing suspicious about him. He doesn't look at Kevin weirdly, doesn't have a large amount of money in his binder or pictures and articles of Kevin and Riko. He owns a normal amount of clothes and stuff.

The fic starts with Wymack and Abby sitting Kevin down and telling him about the divorce. Abby is bisexual and she has internalized homophobia. She says some homophobic things and they tell Kevin that he'll meet Wymack's boyfriend soon.

Kevin is very dramatic about it. He goes to his dorm and rants to Andrew and Neil about it. He's aroace and doesn't understand why people do stupid things, like breaking a perfectly "happy" family, because of love. He's kinda homophobic too like he believes Wymack was straight and whoever his boyfriend is "turned him gay".

His audience isn't impressed, though. Neil knows about Wymack and Stuart and says that Kevin shouldn't say those things, before meeting the boyfriend. Also, he tells him from experience that if there was no love between Abby and Wymack it was better for everyone that they separated.

Andrew says that you can't "turn" people gay. Also, Andrew and Neil are already together at this point, so they're really the worst possible people for Kevin to vent about it.

Kevin meets Stuart the next day and when he realizes it's Neil's uncle, he gets mad at Neil too. He expects Andrew to support him, but he takes Neil's side. He even refuses to give Kevin a ride to the court, let alone play with him to work through his anger.

Wymack goes to Betsy for therapy. He suggests to Abby that she go too since she's (understandably) very upset about the whole situation. Abby goes and she and Betsy hit it off right away.

Betsy is a terrible therapist. Worse than she's in the books. She's based on Mendel, after all. Abby doesn't notice that, though. So after she finds Kevin playing Exy by himself, she tries very hard to convince Kevin to see Betsy too. Kevin agrees only if Betsy goes to the court.

She goes and Kevin is like 'finally here's someone who'll understand me.' He finds out how wrong he was shortly after. Kevin says how he hates everyone, including Andrew. Betsy tells him that Andrew's her son. Then he says some homophobic things and Betsy's like 'I'm lesbian.' It's very awkward.

Kevin tries to find Kayleigh, but Andrew finds out and tells him that if she abandoned him she doesn't deserve to be his mother.

Kevin's therapy sessions continue because Abby forces him to go.

Abby and Betsy fall in love and decide to get married. Wymack gets angry because they're his therapist and ex-wife. Andrew threatens Abby that if she doesn't treat his mother how she deserves, he'll kill her. Betsy's there too and she laughs it off. She says something like 'they're crazy when they're teens, huh?" Abby says "isn't he 20?" and Betsy laughs like it's a joke.

Wymack overhears it and tells Andrew that he can't threaten Abby with death. Andrew replies that it's above his pay grade because Abby's nothing to him anymore. That hits Wymack hard.

Then the winter banquet arrives and Riko tells Wymack about Stuart's real work. Wymack breaks up with him, because a) Stuart's a danger to his team, and b) he feels like he can't trust Stuart anymore like he doesn't know who Stuart is anymore.

Stuart says that his debt will be paid by the summer. But doesn't mention why it exists in the first place. He goes back to England and takes Neil with him. Before they go Neil tells him about how Stuart got involved with the Moriyamas in the first place. Neil also says that Stuart is more helpful than dangerous when it comes to the Moriyamas. When Riko tried to get him on his team, Stuart made him back off.

Wymack starts to regret breaking up with him, but he doesn't have the time to think about it and lets Stuart go.

Kevin notices how similar Andrew and Wymack's behaviors are when their boyfriends are away. He understands that even though he doesn't feel romantic attraction, he still loves his family and friends. And if romance is what makes them happy, he'll do anything he can to bring it back to them.

So Kevin teams up with Neil and they create a plan. They decide that if Neil convinces Stuart to come with him to the US, Kevin will take it from there and get them back together.

It turns out, Kevin doesn't have to work as hard for that to happen as he imagined. He sneaks Stuart where Wymack is, as though he can see Neil playing Exy better. They don't need any more meddling and get back together.

Betsy starts working as a team therapist. Wymack's not too happy about that at first, but then he sees how much she helps with the Foxes, and starts respecting her for that.

Months pass by and their relationships gradually get better. They play the final game against the Ravens. Kevin and Riko didn't know each other until they were already in college and they're just rivals. Kevin is a better striker than Kevin and he's jealous of him. He can't do anything about it, though. Jean plays for the Trojans from the start.

The Foxes win, of course. When Wymack, Abby, Betsy, and Stuart are celebrating with them in the locker room, Riko somehow gets in there. He says something insulting about them, and Kevin stands up to him and defends his family.

re: the ask you previously answered about kandreil, do you think — aside from shippers having overly aggressive approaches sometimes —interpreting anything romantic or sexual in the text with Kevin and Neil erases Neil’s demisexuality? I’ve always been unsure of that as I’m not a-spec, and I know that there are a-spec aftg fans who ship kandreil but I’ve never seen a discussion about Neil’s demisexuality specifically regarding it. Not sure I’m wording this right, just curious what you think.

well it’s a good and complicated question!

i’ve been thinking about it for the last couple of days and instead of giving a clear and concise answer i’m going to acesplain demisexuality and canonsplain neil josten in another lengthy post.

so there are two components to this question - 1) whether kevineil interactions are romantic or sexual 2) whether asserting that they are erases neil’s demisexuality.

1) so first of all kevineil is where the aroace dogma “relationships can be intense without being romantic or sexual and interpreting every such relationship as potentially romantic or sexual erases the experiences of many (not only) arospec/aspec people” clashes with the shipping culture dogma “these two characters glanced at each other once or had an ambiguous dialogue or both like bread and are therefore with a 95% probability already in love”. what can i say to people who think neil has romantic or sexual feelings for kevin? should i shout “people can be friends you guys are just brainwashed” at them? that seems very unproductive. this is a debate that can never be won but still i’d like to remark that interpreting kevineil interactions as romantic or sexual has more to do with this acquired urge to interpret all intense interactions as such than with what’s actually going on between the two. (bUt ThEy WeRe CaNoN iN tHe eArLiEr DrAfTs - i don’t know what you’re talking about, i’m talking about the three books that constitute aftg). i on the contrary rejoice in their romance-less dynamic and firmly believe that they wouldn’t be together even if neil weren’t demi. because some people are just friends. if neil weren’t demi it wouldn’t also be considered in any way problematic to ship kandreil, but neil is and some people like you begin to wonder - because now a rare “endangered” sexuality is involved.

2) i personally want to say yes, interpreting neil’s thoughts about kevin and interactions with him as they are presented in the books as sexual erases neil’s demisexuality - the key word being neil’s.

because demisexuality is a spectrum in itself and many aspec people will experience it differently. how strong an emotional bond does a demi need to have with a person in order to feel sexually attracted to them? it can be anything on the range from once in a lifetime soulmate to basically any person they know and like well enough. this lower side of the spectrum is where the line between demi- and allosexuality gets blurred and is probably also the reason why lots of people deny that demisexuality exists, seeing as they also usually get attracted mostly to people they know and like well enough.

anyway i suppose it’s more common for an average demi person to have had one or more of those emotional bonds that result in attraction by certain age even in order to identify as demi. so i imagine a lot of aspec fans who ship neil with foxes other than andrew, project their experience of demisexuality onto him. if you’re someone who identifies as demi, has deep emotional connection with several of your friends and feels attracted to them, you will probably want the very rare specimen of a fictional demi to have experiences similar to your own. if you’re also a kevin fan and are fascinated by the idea of kandreil, then you’re going to ship it without any concern of erasing anything. “neil’s demi and i’m demi so therefore anything i feel or do concerning sexual attraction he must feel and do as well”.

but neil’s version of demisexuality is quite different. based on andreil it really looks like he’s higher on the ace spectrum than that. even when he reaches the point where he’s like yep andrew is totally the person whom i’d let riko torture me for he still isn’t attracted to him sexually and only when andrew explicitly shows that it’s something he’s interested in does neil begin to explore the idea. when he knows he’s attracted to andrew he specifically checks if he’s able to think of his other male teammates in that way and the answer is no. but the most important thing about neil figuring out his sexuality in my opinion is the fact that he never defines himself as someone who “swings” at any person he establishes a profound connection with, but rather as someone who’s attracted only to andrew. (i’m not even sure if neil would use the demi label if he knew about it). he literally says “the only one i’m interested in is you”. so his situation looks much more like “once in a lifetime soulmate” one to me.

so the question is where do you begin to interpret neil’s sexuality? if you begin with the text then you’ll perceive him as someone who’s attracted to nobody at first and then only to andrew. (haha that’s some very wishful thinking on my part - see the shipping dogma above). but if you begin with your preconceived notions about the demi label then you might expect neil to form those special bonds that enable him to feel sexual attraction as often as you like. maybe if an average demi person was in neil’s place they would end up getting attracted to more foxes. but neil isn’t average, he isn’t a stand-in for the entire demi-dom, he’s a very specific person with a specific way of forming connections with people which is why if you want to write him in character i think it’s much more productive to take into account his personality as it’s showcased in the books than to research what demisexuality is or to self-project. so in the end what’s happening here is really not people erasing neil’s demisexuality by shipping him with this or that character but rather them erasing his canon personality by making him do the things he wouldn’t do.

that being said, fanfic is definitely the place for self-projecting and exploring things that aren’t canon. there are multiple ways to write demi neil in kandreil or other ships ranging from rewriting the canon and increasing the amount and quality of neil’s interactions with the new love interest to doing the same in post-canon to writing an au where they all come from different circumstances and nothing matters. the commonality between these types of story is that they all will be about a different version of neil with a different version of demisexuality which is just the way of fandom life and is perfectly normal.

however what i’ve been observing in post-canon kandreil fics is that the absolute majority of them are established relationship which means that their authors and readers think that whatever happens in the books between kevin and neil is enough for neil to form an emotional bond powerful enough to feel attracted to him (provided they at all agree that neil’s demi because if they don’t it’s a different kind of erasure discourse altogether). but that is just not true and totally erases neil’s demisexuality the way he experiences it. but can i really point out this particular facet of his personality being thrown over board when so many other facets get discarded along the way? neil is probably the aftg character whose canon personality gets misunderstood, ignored and rewritten the most. if a neil from some kandreil fic is a sweet peaceful gentle boi then what does it matter to me that he’s already kevin’s bf? it’s not the neil i know from the books. if neil’s canon personality isn’t important or appealing to this fic’s author then it’s only logical that the specific way neil experiences demisexuality won’t be important to them as well.

tl;dr: apart from those fans who don’t think neil’s demi and write him as allo, do kandreil shippers erase neil’s demisexuality? not necessarily. but do they rewrite the way neil experiences sexual attraction to better fit their ship? probably yes.

i want to end this by a disclaimer: like i said, i’m an aroace person talking about demisexuality which isn’t strictly my identity. andreil is very important to me as an ace because it reflects my personal understanding of relationships. of course andreil’s “once in a lifetime” soulmate situation speaks more to me as a person who doesn’t feel any kind of attraction and generally has trouble connecting to people beyond that. i can’t relate to most relationships i see in fiction because they are founded on attraction which is a language i don’t understand, so nora writing andreil in a language i could understand was a pretty big deal to me. consequently i feel very sceptical towards all other ships including kandreil because my views of romance are ace, not even demi. so basically i’m biased too.

💙: how has the idea changed between starting it and where it is now?

the fic was supposed to be a one-shot at first! the original idea was that i wanted to write about how kevin’s graduation would affect andreil’s relationship to a point where they realized he was as big of a part of their relationship as each other were, but it quickly developed into a longer, more complex wip. i don’t think a Lot has changed, per se, but many of my now favorite scenes were not included in my outline at all, so <3

💜: where are you in the writing process?

i’m currently 3.5/10 chapters down, which would be 45k words more or less! story-wise, the plot is finally moving forward with andreil solving their tension + admitting their feelings towards kevin to each other!

💞: which future scene are you looking forward to writing?

❣️: which scene has been hardest to write so far?

[clutches pearls] every andreil fight scene was very hard to write for me, personally, because they’re characters that i don’t imagine would have slamming-doors type of fights like kevineil and kandrew have had before lol >:( so it was kind of a hit or miss for me. i also didn’t like writing a scene where kevin ended up being hospitalized because i’m a fierce hospital hater and i happened to be in a hospital lobby while i wrote it

[evil gremlin hands] SO MANY!!!! god i apologize beforehand but here’s a little list of scenes i crave to write

andrew and kevin sleeping in the same bed for the first time in a hotel room all the way in boston

robin’s first meeting with her girlfriend

a scene where river promises kevin they’re going to teach him how to live life to its fullest + every single scene that comes from that promise

kevin and neil on the dance floor @ edens for halloween

kevin and robin having matching halloween costumes :]

a scene where kevin is invited to a night out by his new teammates and he genuinely has lots of fun

and more. i’m a little bit obsessed

💕: what has your favorite scene been?

by FAR the scene where jean and andrew talk about jean’s problems with kandrew’s canon relationship!!!! but it also rivals with the scene where aaron tells andrew he’s a loser for not getting with kevin in freshman year lol. OH AND a scene where neil and robin are just being cute and friends too :^(
