If Suyin really was sorry, then she would've respected that Lin is hurting and angry and gave her distance. Even better, if Lin decided that she doesn't want to be around family that punishes her for having feelings and being angry at having no justice, that's even more valid.
Agreed. There's a difference between being inconvenienced that someone is angry about something terrible they did to you and truly feeling remorseful that you hurt someone. Suyin accusing Lin of keeping their family apart when Suyin scarred her and Toph betrayed her tells me everything I need to know about her character.

Not to be an armchair psychologist but did Suyin give anyone else ✨narcissistic sibling✨ vibes?

Beifongs who have rights: Lin, Huan, ATLA Toph
Beifongs who don't have rights: LOK Toph, Lao & Poppy, SUYIN, Baatar Jr.
Beifongs I'm undecided on: Su's twins, Opal (her relationship with Bolin is cute though)

Suyin Beifong: I was a pirate once! Everyone else: Wow that's so cool! It must've been fun sailing the high seas and stuff.
My friend, who knows that pirates steal and kill: Suyin is a bad person.

I genuinely fucking hate that people try to act like Suyin is canonically Sokka's daughter. There is literally zero implication, unless you somehow count Toph having a one-sided crush on Sokka at the age of 12 and Suyin having darker skin.
The Earth Kingdom is literally the largest nation, with a wide variety of citizens. We see several minor Earth Kingdom characters throughout both shows with darker skin than Toph's, closer to Su's skintone.
And just to reiterate, there was zero reciprocity between Toph and Sokka - it was like a kid having a crush on an older sibling's friend or an older kid at school. But, for some reason, people swear they canonically got together and had a daugher who Sokka had zero involvement with. Fucking ridiculous.

While I disagree with a lot of people's critcisms on how the Beifong drama was handled, I will certainly agree that the episodes surrounding Lin and Su's relationship was.... weird.
Because it really felt like we were being set up to side with Lin completely. The entire "Old Wounds" episode focused mainly one her. On her flashbacks, on her emotional discomfort, on her perception of Suyin. Which isn't to say that those things should've been disregarded.
But in comparison, Suyin, the other half of the coin (so to speak) gets very little.
Sure, she gets to talk a little bit about how she saw her childhood at the tail end of "The Metal Clan" but that's really it. We don't see any flashbacks from her PoV. And the way she speaks about her trauma doesn't pack as much of an emotional punch as Lin's scenes do. Which is in character, due to the fact that Su has been able to evolve past her traa, while Lin has been clinging to it for 20+ years and allowing it to fester.
I think it would've gone a long way to include some scenes that would focus more on Suyin, since most viewers won't be inclined to look at her compassionately. Not when we see Suyin mainly through Lin's eyes. Lin sees Su as the "problem" in her life, so we also see Su that way. It's very difficult to untangle Su from Lin's perception of Su.
The storyline becomes stranger still when it reaches a very abrupt resolution. It does feel very sudden. It does feel unnatural. It also feels like a disservice to Lin's character. We've seen her go through all this shit.... and now we just. Are supposed to forget all that?
It's odd... where the storyline itself favours Suyin, the narrative seems to "favour" Lin? It's certainly no shocker people feel like Lin was fucked over by the story. I'm of the belief that both sisters deserved better.

Oh, Suyin…
Our first introduction to her is as the metal clan’s matriarch and her introducing herself as woman of many hats, a renaissance woman, even.
(And Zaofu is amazing and shiny and all about allowing people to discover potential, but it’s also a fortress with a living lie detector on staff.)
All the while Lin insists nothing about Suyin has changed since in almost 30 years. For her part, it somehow never crosses Suyin’s mind to try an apologizing to Lin. She only tries that after fighting Lin on the front yard until Opal stepped in and Lin passed out. (Also she’s pretty blasé about her past; wait what was that about being a pirate?)
On the other hand, she passes a parenting test with Opal that Lao and Poppy failed with Toph. Eventually.
But then the Red Lotus infiltration of Zaofu happens. And you can hear angry she is over the betrayal of the Zaofu. (Of the Metal Clan. Of her.)
And Aiwei is revealed to be the traitor after his escape. And she pretends to support Lin’s idea of Korra staying put, only to undermine a second later. She asks Korra to have Naga track Aiwei down and bring him back to her. And the thing is, this moment leans heavily on the storytelling conventions of a narrative: the cool authority figure who breaks the rules to help the heroes go out and save the day. And Korra is so grateful for the help.
Tumblr media
Except that’s not what’s actually happened. What actually happened is Suyin sent out the one person the Red Lotus wanted to capture and kill after them for her own reasons. And while this incident leads to Korra’s capture by the Earth Kingdom instead, it also leads to the Red Lotus capturing Mako and Bolin. Which in turn grants the Red Lotus access to the palace, which allows Zaheer to assassinate the Earth Queen.
And while the assassination was still Zaheer’s action as well as something the Red Lotus always planned, and the Krew ultimately decided they wanted to pursue Aiwei, Suyin’s choices enabled that pursuit. That enabling is still part of a chain of events that resulted in the Earth Kingdom’s slide into chaos. But that’s never brought up since the priorities for the rest of the season are saving the airbenders (plus Kya), and then Korra when she’s also taken.
Hope that doesn’t become a pattern…

Spicy confession to make: I hated Suyin the first time I watched Korra, and I still vehemently dislike her character. "ACAB", I know, but Lin deserved way better from the writing when it came to the sisters' conflict.
acab acab acab but lin is my personal exception because she’s my beloved who deserved better treatment from her friends, family & the narrative smh. i never warmed up to suyin for many reasons & her treatment of lin was absolutely a major part of that.

Say idk if you've considered trying this but a "Young Kuvirasami" Prequel fic would be so charming and adorable.
I think it could work as them meeting as kids and not knowing it till adulthood, or them being lifelong friends❤️💚😚🥰
Interestingly enough, I have played around with the idea of Asami and Kuvira meeting before the events of Book 3 with a concept I had for a Fullmetal Alchemist inspired story. In this divergence, Hiroshi made a trip to Zaofu with his family to witness by himself the technological innovations developed by Baatar Sr. This was before the tragic incident that took Yasuko's life and before Hiroshi was radicalized in anti-bender sentiment. Little Asami met all the Beifong children, including newcomer Kuvira, who had been recently taken in by Suyin after being abandoned by her parents. In this version, Asami became Kuvira's first true friend, and they became pen pals after Asami returned to Republic City. Little did they know how important this friendship would be in the future as they faced life changing events that would alter the course of their lives.
I like this WIP a lot, but for now, it shall remain in the WIP drawer because the whole concept gets pretty complicated with what could be considered an alternate retelling of the series (sans Kuvira's rise to power and tyrannical regime) and it would require a lot of work for it to turn out as I would like 🥲, but that's basically the idea in a nutshell.

Welcome to Republic City
Seventy years after the events concluding Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang has died and the Order of the White Lotus discovers the new Avatar, Korra, in the Southern Water Tribe. By the age of 17, Korra has mastered the elements of water, earth, and fire, but has not yet been able to airbend. Kept under lock and key by White Lotus for her own protection, she is frustrated by her isolation from the rest of the world, and eagerly anticipates completing her training with Master Tenzin, the son of Katara and Aang, and the only airbending master. However Tenzin also serves on the council of the United Republic (a new fifth nation created by Avatar Aang and Firelord Zuko in the period between the two series) and civil unrest in the capital, Republic City, forces him to postpone her training. Unwilling to live under the strict confines of her life with the White Lotus anymore, Korra absconds from her compound on her massive polar bear-dog Naga and stows away on a vessel bound for Republic City, a bustling and rapidly modernizing capital of world affairs. After a clash with local triads, she is arrested by Lin Beifong, head of Republic City's metalbending police force and the daughter of Toph, until Tenzin bails her out and allows her to stay with him. Meanwhile, antagonist 'Amon' is identified as the leader of the anti-bender "Equalist" movement--the movement's numbers are swiftly swelling due to inequities between benders and non-benders and its extremist militant arm is beginning to kidnap benders whose fates are initially unknown.
The Metal Clan
Team Avatar arrive in Zaofu, a metal city led by Suyin Beifong, Lin's estranged half-sister and the mother of Opal, a new airbender. Korra begins training Opal, but cannot convince Lin to mend the rift between herself and Suyin. In Republic City, Zaheer infiltrates Air Temple Island in an attempt to find Korra but escapes after he is identified and attacked by Kya.

Mako is a precious bean who must be protected at all costs. And Suyin is an absolutely terrible bitch and doesn't deserve Lin as a sister. Lin's too good for her.
Hey Anon, thanks for the ask! LMAO you got me there!
I feel bad because when I first watched LOK, I kind of dismissed Mako, only because I knew the outcome of the show (I'm an avid Wiki reader that spoils most shows for myself haha). But looking back at his character and everything, he totally deserves the love and respect. Just a very family oriented guy who has lost so much... Sure, he's done some dumb stuff, but they're forgivable (if I remember LOK correctly...). But really, orphaned as a young boy, who then has to take care of his younger brother, just trying to protect the Avatar because he cares so much for her, and is pretty selfless, just a little blunt with his actions... what's not to like? Haha.
And Suyin... Oh Suyin...
I'll admit, I liked Suyin in canon when I first watched it. I had a veil over my eyes. But after thinking about the Beifong family and their rift and everything in general... I have SO many issues with it ALL. Because of that, canon Suyin is infuriating to watch.
But I do have my own version of Suyin for my Taang AU, and just in my AUs in general because the bones of her character are good, but then the whole neglected child because your mother was a shitty parent, running around with criminals, scarring your sister's face, getting away with everything, and never apologizing for anything.... HMPH! So, I fixed her for me to not hate her, and so far it's worked. However, I agree the version of Suyin we see in the show is not worthy of the gem that is Lin Beifong.
Because LIN BEIFONG IS TOO GOOD FOR EVERYONE. And you know what sucks? We're supposed to feel like she's in the wrong for different situation/scenarios, especially when it comes to the Krew's decisions, she acts as their opposite, even antagonist. AND LIKE... she just wanted to protect people she cared about and everyone took her for granted.
I'm just frustrated because there are so many things about these characters that are supposed to add depth and show all these different dimensions that make a character more human... But it just makes the water muddy and ends up making the viewing experience frustrating when you see one thing and are told another...
Anyway, all of this is to say I agree with you! There are a lot of things about LOK that I've changed to make it a better situation for the Beifongs in particular (ahem, see Kantoph AU where they're one big happy family), and so far, I'm content LOL. Thanks again for the ask, Anon! Hope you have a great day despite the salt in this post haha.

Also redemption arcs contingent on trying to garner sympathy for a villain by showing how unfair it is that someone they really hurt won’t stop being angry at and distrustful of them are so lazy. Focus on having them understand the weight of their actions and who they’ve hurt and not how unfair it is that years of bad behavior have consequences.

Sorry but instead of giving a fascist a lousy redemption arc (because her parents didn’t know how to discipline her and she never listened to them and they gave her to a rich family to help her.) They should’ve given it to Amon who had good intentions and wanted to help people. He hated himself because of what he was, a bloodbender. His father lies to his mother for years and she was clueless. He probably hated his mother for that too. He had a good backstory and was kinda like Jeong Jeong hating his power because it hurts others. And instead of the boat scene happening he maybe could have turned himself in and redeemed himself later helping Korra or something. But I’m still mad she got house arrest. And varrick used the “she made me do it” exuse to get out free then married the president so he’s untouchable now. “But he changed” doesn’t matter he helped build a spirt weapon to kill everyone in RC and other places that wouldn’t give up to Kuvira.

Controversial Takes of the Day
Kyoshi is overrated and honestly wasn't that great of an Avatar.
Roku doesn't deserve the amount of hate he gets for....... *checks notes* not wanting to kill his childhood best friend.
Suyin is a great character who also gets an undeserved amount of hate.
Disagree? Tell me why.
