Welcome to the thirty-fifth official Cadybear's Reviews! Today I'll be talking about Untameable, which I have ranked on the "PooPoo Tier" at 1 star out of a possible 10. My last and only playthrough of this was around March-September 2022.

Holy fuck this one is so bad. It’s so bland it’s so bland it’s so bland. 

I think this is the first story in Choices to actively anger me. Well, actually, that would actually be OG HSS 2 because of the basketball game drama, but at least that had an excuse for happening and it didn’t taint the whole book. 

Admittedly, this is a weird one to put in the Poopoo Tier along with shit like Surrender and FCL. When you get down to it, it isn’t really offensive or problematic like those two are. There isn’t any glorified toxicity or half-baked resolutions of toxic behaviors or anything like that. But it still had me shouting and ranting at my phone screen with little to no redeeming qualities… so I put it on the tier. 

To start, the story isn’t even that charged with smut outside of those CGs, despite it being a “sexy” book. I mean, at least excessive smut would have made it interestingly bad or fun bad. But no, it’s just boring and frustrating bad. 

Kit is easily the blandest LI I’ve ever seen. Like, textbook definition of a soulless customizable LI. The story tries to push them as a “player” but all we ever see of that is two scenes where people flock over to Kit and swoon over them. But Kit was completely unresponsive to it, so how am I supposed to buy them as a player and not just a local ranch heartthrob? 

The conflict as a whole is super artificial and contrived. I’ll give the affair stories this– as contrived and melodramatic as they are, their “forbidden” attractions actually felt forbidden, by virtue of the LI (or MC in TDA’s case) already being in a relationship with someone else. 

With Untameable, they try to push Kit and MC as a forbidden romance, but literally nothing about it is forbidden besides the fact that Austin will throw a baby Caillou temper tantrum once he catches Kit and MC. Like, he straight up claims their relationship affects the ranch but HOW DOES IT DO THAT. HOW. WHAT MENTAL GYMNASTICS DID YOU DO TO GET TO THAT. IN WHAT WORLD DOES THAT MAKE ANY LOGICAL SENSE. 

It’s not even one of those “it’s more interesting and refreshing as non-wlm” routes like something like SW, TCH (1), ID (1), DLS, and (presumably) Alpha are, despite the “older brother wants to protect younger sibling MC from player friend LI” trope that was meant more for wlm routes. Because, again, it’s trying to force high stakes and forbidden romance where there is none. 

I have no idea why this absolute doodoofart of a book got a sequel. But hey, at least it’s gonna be about a different cast of characters, with Mandy as a LI. Honestly, Mandy was probably the only major recurring character in this book that didn’t bore or annoy me despite leaning very dangerously into the “best friend who talks exclusively about diamond outfits and how you totally deserve to bone the LI” trope.

Why Amity is a bad character

Not my post, Ive just translated it, but I can't agree more

This can be called not even a hate, but a perplexity, since Amity as a character is not integral with us. It's like a solid plot hole hastily glued into a ready-made idea of the series. Let's take it in order.

In the first episodes with Amity, she is shown as a bully (when she poured shit on Willow), always competing with everyone's nerd (remember the episode where she couldn't stand that at least someone was better than her in abominations?) and in general, something like a kind of Draco Malfoy from the world of the Owl House. Even the twins Edric and Emira Blite quietly disliked her, as they considered her an arrogant reptile, shitting other students out of boredom. And so it was, in fact.

But then they started showing us Amity from the other side, and then the first inconsistencies began. In the series with the library, where Amity read books to little witches and other fabulous creatures, it struck me for the first time - like, all this time, Amity had a soft nature hiding under a mask of arrogance, but her brother and sister didn't even know about it and considered her just a harmful bastard? Okay, okay, let's say. But then we learn from Amity's memories that she was always good and Willow left only at the request of overbearing parents who were against their friendship. I'm sorry, what? I remind you that at her first appearance, Amity mocks Willow when no one is around, clearly enjoying it herself. Who forced her to do nasty things then?? And anyway, if Amity had a kind nature from the very beginning, why would she mock and laugh at others? She would have walked around with an arrogant look and that was it. My parents told me not to be friends with witches of a different status, and not to bully everyone who doesn't like them.

And after Luz and Amity start dating, Amity transforms incredibly radically and quickly. And I'm not talking about the hairstyle (which was much better in the original version, imho). She completely changes her worldview, her behavior, her plans for life, after all. And everything would be fine, but... These events take place in one summer. One summer, Carl! In one summer, an arrogant witch who loves to bully others, trying to be the best at everything, dreaming of becoming part of the imperial coven, turns into her absolute opposite. And do you know what I can't understand about such transformations? Footing. What is it like here? Okay, Amity fell in love with Luz, but why did she suddenly change ALL her principles for her? After all, she had somehow justified her dreams, her goals for herself before? Before, she really wanted to be the best, to join the imperial coven. Or how did it happen according to the creators - the evil mom ordered Amity to wish for certain things and zombified her, and as soon as the good Luz came, Amity immediately realized everything in the world and was filled? The same Hunter is shown much more realistically, we see he has an incredibly strong motivation to change, and then he doesn't do it in two episodes.

Damn, how much Amity doesn't fit into the story can be seen by the end of the first season, when we have an awesome important event and the main characters have to risk their lives to rescue Ida from captivity. And Amity did it in this fucking important episode in the finale... absolutely nothing. A few episodes before that, we were shown how Amity falls in love with Luz, worries about Luz, is already crazy about Luz, but when Luz risks his life in the center of events, Amity just lies at home with his injured leg and watches everything on magic TV. Like, seriously, man?? They didn't even bother to put it in the plot. Logically, she should be one of the main characters, but in fact she looks like a typical cardboard "girlfriend of the main character", like helpless half-naked girls from films about some Indiana Jones (I have nothing against Indiana, but the girls of gg in those days were really mostly cardboard in the background). In the following seasons, there is a place for Amity, but it doesn't get any better - she continues to look cardboard, a girl who can only scream about her love for Luz. Who gave up all her goals for the sake of Loot, but she didn't come up with new ones, and now her whole life revolves around Luz, while Luz, like gg, quietly lives her life and solves her problems. In the last episode, she has a job, she succeeded her father and works with abominations, but kamon, did it ever mention before the third season that she wants to take over his profession?? No. Starting dating Luz, she loses her personality, and all that remains of her is the delight at the sight of Luz and perfectly correct conscientious decisions, which do not go well with the image of Amity from the first series.

And it's impossible to call it Amity hate, because if you hate, then who exactly? We have three completely unrelated witches: The arrogant bully Amity, the kind Amity, Who Suffered From Evil Parents/Friends'/"Substitute An Excuse" and finally A Madly In Love Amity Without Her Own Goals And Principles. Which one of them to focus on, speaking of the image of Amity, is not in my heart. And yes, it's kind of sad to realize that at the beginning of the first season, Amity had a normal image that had chances for good development, a gradual realization that she treats people incorrectly, a GRADUAL transformation from a spoiled pest into a good friend for Luz and company, into a good secondary character. Even with falling in love with Luz, it was possible to do something interesting - to show how Amity rushes between two fires, tries to date Luz without quarreling with her family, wants to combine an affair with Luz and joining the imperial coven, eventually realizes that this is a failed idea and suffers from having to quit either a family and a dream, or a loved one... And as a result, all the potential was poured into the toilet for the hyper-accelerated development of a "serious romance for life" between two 14-year-olds. And Amity just follows Luz like a goat on a string, completely changing her life and her personality for the sake of a man she has known for less than three months. Yeah, very plausible.

NothingVerse Prologue

Once Upon A Time.

Peace flourished throughout the multiverse...

Nothing could disturb this moment of tranquility..

There lived two roles yet to be fulfilled, destroyer and creator.

however..

The multiverse, although in this era of calm, Catastrophe erupted.

This Catastrophe caused a split, opening the multiverse to chaos.

This chaos embodied itself into a realm called the Anti-Void.

However, the peace that was previously in the multiverse would take form as something called the Doodle Sphere.

Eventually, one day.

The Anti-Void gained a conscious, finding itself in nothing but blackness, till it found a light.

A light within the multiverse, which we now know as the Doodle Sphere.

It attempted to go to the light, however this would cause spore-like droplets of itself to go to the Doodle Sphere.

This causes a merger between the Doodle Sphere and the Anti-Void, them splitting amongst the other.

The Doodle Sphere's vibrant blue merges with the anti-void's pure white, this causing something called a "Virus" to seep into the doodle-sphere.

This causes something called life to be created, as the Doodle Sphere reacts to this by creating something else, called an "AU".

The virus merges with the so called "AU", creating life.

This AU, now developed - gets the name of "Undertale", as due to the fact that life couldn't truly develop in it, the concept of time would be created, allowing for life to evolve.

However, trillions of years pass.

These "Viruses" would begin to..

Have a..

negative effect.

The viruses, now instead of creating life.

Had evolved, creating au's.

This led to dangerous AU'S being created, as due to this - the Doodle Sphere would instinctively kick off the merger, the Anti-Void being sent to the very edge of the multiverse, as this causes it to knock its color everywhere, creating something called the empty reality, an entirely black void.

This black void had nearly the same amount of intelligence as the Anti-Void, therefore it instantly creating 3 realms in its birth, due to the power the Anti-Void was producing before creating the empty reality.

These realms were each called Life, Death, And the in-between.

These were eventually renamed "Dreamtale", "Reapertale", And "Game Over.".

Due to this ever-expanding expansion of the empty reality, the Anti-Void would create a virus of itself, calling it "Error."

This being called error would have nearly all the power of the Anti-Void, finding anything within the multiverse to take form as.

The Doodle Sphere would follow suit, although not being merged - having learnt how to create life, would create a being called "Ink."

The two beings eventually find something within the first AU, a skeleton that was good enough to take form of.

This created the destroyer, and the creator.

Them calling themselves..

Ink Sans, and Error Sans.

When I really think about it, I think Untamable is my most hated Choices book of all time. Even more than Witness and MTFL.

I mean, at least Witness was hilariously and memorably terrible. At least MTFL had some redeeming qualities that give it (wasted) potential. They're books where we remember how bad they are and we kinda love to hate them.

But there's nothing that makes Untameable uniquely memorable or worth saving. It's just forced high stakes, false forbidden romance, and a whole lot of boring when it's not being aggravating. I can't even care about how wlm-coded it supposedly is because the story is trash no matter which kind of route you do.

Kit isn't truly characterized as a player or as someone that Austin would understandably be protecting from, and MC and Kit's relationship has zero effect on the ranch despite what Austin says. Literally the only thing that happened when MC and Kit were found out was Austin throwing a temper tantrum that is so childish it makes Caillou look like a sophisticated Nobel Peace Prize winner.

And Kit is easily the blandest LI of all LIs. I'm someone who doesn't find most customizable LIs to be all completely devoid of character, but Kit is the exception to that. They are the textbook definition of an "empty customizable LI", and it makes my head feel empty to try and remember anything unique or memorable about this character.

There's no bad that we can make fun of, just bad that we can rant about.

people hear that i'm anti-psych on a lot of levels and they immediately assume that it means that i hate therapy and that i think that no one should be allowed medical treatment and blah blah blah

but that's so wrong???

firstly) i prioritize completely informed consent and autonomy. a lot of health care professionals don't, esp in mental healthcare.

secondly) i acknowledge the good that mental healthcare can do, but the system is majorly fucked and trying to find good care that is what you need is like finding a light blue needle in a stack of dark blue needles; you end up hurt a thousand times before you even get close to finding what you need, not to mention that they all look pretty similar so you could end up with a dark blue needle and get fucked up w/o realizing it

thirdly) not everyone has/needs/wants mental healthcare. which is fine, until you need/have/want mental healthcare and people stop talking to you/crap on you/etc etc bc it's so stigmatized

fourth) look all of my points boil down to completely informed consent, autonomy, and how much the system sucks.

i'm not anti-people-getting-the-care-they-need, i'm anti-the-current-psychiatric-system. cause it sucks and is inherently biased and shitty and sure it makes progress but at a snail's fuckin pace which doesn't help the people stuck in it now

I'm so freaking tired of female beauty standards and the UTTER IDIOCY of people who have the audacity to leave comments under body positivity content that are along the lines of "omg this is disgusting, I could never... But you do you!" like it's a fucking compliment and not absolutely deranged. Interestingly, I've seen the same thing happen in the barefoot shoes discourse, in regards to how natural feet look like. It's shocking how many people are there spamming vomit emojis and confidently saying they'd pick deformed feet over "disgusting" natural feet ????? After seeing that I have no words. If some people consciously deform their body parts because they deem the natural state this unbearably disgusting, there's no hope for accepting body hair. It's genuinely sickening.
