smurfs is sooo bad with its human character designs, as in like, if a character is noticeably more "ugly" than the others, you know that it's gonna be a Bad Guy. I can't remember the episode but there's supposed to be a "twist villain" reveal but the character design literally gives it away in advance.

And then.

It goes so hard with its "(blonde/light,) straight hair = good" through-line that like... then we have this lady in a later episode:

Now, I actually really love this lady's design. I think she's very cute! But I was also very aware that it was unusual character design for an ostensibly Good human character in smurfs. (big, curly hair, brunette, etc). Refreshing change of pace!

Nooope nevermind, she's secretly In It For The Money and not supposed to be sympathetic, Ouch.

Then you have all the other stuff in smurfs that inherently links the notions that Traditionally Attractive People Are Good, People Who Don't Meet Those Standards Are Bad/"Evil" with how Smurfette's design change was handled when she went "bad"->good and what have you... The show is just really, really Not Great with that whole area

Even in Lure of the Orb we're shown this obligatory scene of DON'T WORRY THE LADY ISN'T ATTRACTIVE THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW SHE'S BAD, like come on now. Traditionally attractive people just aren't allowed to be Bad in this show, it's always some kind of Pointless Illusion or whatever!

I've already made my feelings on it clear before but I really do think they could have done a much better job with the new waterloo road. Like I get you're not gonna get the authenticity of the old show back and times have changed a lot but the writing really does suck. I mean if you look at it as a separate thing it's a decent show but the fact it's still called waterloo road makes you constantly compare it to the original. And it really doesn't match up to it at all. The only good thing they've done is bring back a few old characters but they feel very out of place and feels like they've just been brought back for nostalgia (donte included)

as much trouble that i had with polar coordinates yesterday i actually am kind of understanding it now so i guess they were right when they said practice makes perfect

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately talking about how no one comments/reblogs/replies/etc anymore, and, as someone who comments regularly on a lot of fanworks, it sometimes makes me wonder if my efforts are worth anything. Then I remember how much happiness I get from comments on my own work/posts and how much the community of fandom can matter, and I remember the power that can be found in spreading joy instead of disappointment.

So -- to everyone who comments on fanfiction: thank you. You make the writing process worthwhile and so very rewarding. You make people happy every day.

To all the people who reblog art and gifsets and meta and anything else with enthusiastic tags: thank you. You make people smile and promote interesting conversations and make being on Tumblr so much more fun.

To anyone who sends people asks about their works, whether it's unprompted or part of an ask game: thank you. You give people reasons to talk about things they love and feel like a part of a community.

I love how Nora just invents things in order to avoid complications with real-life things.

Like, using USC's football stadium as the exy stadium too would take a lot of work to figure out how that would be possible. Solution: invent a new stadium!

Having the characters play a real sport that already exists would mean looking into all the rules and regulations and history, etc, and there could be multiple elements of the sport that work against the plot of the story or complicate it in some way. Solution: invent a new sport!

I mean, it gives her full creative control over what happens in the story, and we as readers get to learn about a cool new thing without feeling the need to fact-check every element. Tbh, it makes so much sense to me.

Like, go off! Make stuff up! It's your world. We're just reading and enjoying and becoming obsessed with it!!!
