the full apple music interview with zane lowe is out! we got snippets of it when love from the other side dropped, but they finally rolled out the full thing. here are some highlights that stood out to me :)

patrick describes pete's lyrics as what gets him out of bed in the morning. if pete doesn't send him lyrics, he doesn't write a song.

andy and pete used to draw fake snake tattoos on each other using magic markers as kids omg?

so evidently patrick was the one who got covid during hella mega tour. and he hated it and he was miserable and that's when he called neal avron about the new record lmao

patrick says that joe was hesitant at first and he was the one who said that for this record he wanted to make something that they could all savor and spend time on and patrick was immediately on board with that

pete says patrick's job is to interpret him because pete calls his mentality a "little bit off" but patrick is capable of understanding him and translating it

patrick describes his and pete's creative relationship as "twin speak." it's not linear and it's like living in his brain a little bit. he calls it the "weirdest thing i've ever seen" when pete can just Tell that some words that patrick adjusted weren't ones he wrote despite not remembering writing them. patrick says he's gotten better at connective tissue and knowing how pete would say things

pete: back in the day patrick was like, "what's the difference between cry and weep i will KILL YOU. THEY'RE THE SAME THING. I'M GONNA KILL YOU RIGHT NOW."

zane says patrick's vocals are next level for this album. pete agrees that he kills it on this album and said he never would've expected that voice coming from him when they first met. zane says patrick could sing a recipe and it would be good. he then passes patrick a recipe and patrick. sings it???

patrick: i'm not gonna belt it. (starts belting) NINE INCH PIE PLATE ROLLING PIN

patrick says that pete doesn't mean to have rhythm to his words but there's a rhythm to them all the same and patrick can find this syncopation in his words and thinks it's amazing

more talking about patrick and pete's Magical Mystical Transcendent Soul Bond. patrick says "if we were one guy, we'd be an INCREDIBLE DUDE"

patrick and pete say that interviews with all four of them are hard because it's chaos and everyone's talking at once but it all makes perfect sense to them and no one else. zane says that sounds like fun flkjdfd [i agree please do this more it's a joy]

pete says joe really stepped up and wrote a lot for this record!

patrick: "joe is kind of a conundrum because he's this really talented...he's a brilliant writer, a brilliant player, but pete and i became the "team" and it wasn't really a plan, but that's just kind of how it happened. [brief tangent about the hiatus] we come back from the thing and joe is this fully-formed writer with a very distinct - he has one of the most distinctive writing voices. when i hear his parts, when i hear his ideas, i could pick them out of a crowd. like i know the way joe writes, and it's VERY joe." part of the process with post-hiatus was integrating him into the writing process more.

discussing the hiatus and fame and pete says his life kind of "blew up" and took it pretty hard. apparently during production for folie paparazzi actually broke down the gate to neal avron's house

patrick goes on a big tangent about how bad things got during the height of pete's fame. "part of my role is to tell his story. i'm a composer. that's what i like to do. i work on movies, i work on shows, and i work on pete. pete has a story that needs music, and if he's removed from himself, if he's not even able to access himself because he's behind all of this stuff, i don't have a story! so not only did i not have my buddy, which was heartbreaking in its own way, but then i also don't have a purpose as an artist."

patrick says that andy is always ready to play but when you get him happy to play, it's another level

"and trohman, there were these moments where he...he got so excited."

patrick describes writing what a time to be alive as wanting to write the saddest, most desperate song you could hear at a wedding. pete bursts into laughter and calls it "so twisted"

talking about other endeavors outside the band - patrick talks about composing and said joe's been super busy with his book and writing for tv and because there are so many deadlines for stuff like that, it's what hammered home to him that fall out boy needs to not be that. "there's something special about this that can't be...this has to be passionate and art."

discussing how scared patrick was of his own voice while the band took off. patrick was really scared of the song saturday at first because there are some really exposed vocal moments. he describes saturday as a song where everyone in the band lets each other go for it.

zane calls fall out boy the "emo blueprint" and says they were unapologetic in being emotional. patrick immediately says, "that was pete. i don't think we could've done that without him." he and joe were basically kids and patrick was too anxious to talk on stage.

zane says, "i remember interviewing you in the early days and i felt like every time i asked you a question i was bullying you." pete IMMEDIATELY loses his shit.

"in another life where i didn't have a pete...cause saturday, i did write most of that by myself...so there's a world where that song exists without the band. there's no world where i sing it in front of people without pete."

pete says every night before they put out a new song he calls patrick up and gets really scared and wants to back out and patrick talks him down every time

they talk about how scary it was when arm's race released and performing it at the amas. patrick starts laughing rly hard as they get into how there were giant crickets on stage and the crowd was just stone-faced and utterly nonresponsive and their stage manager was utterly panicked

towards the end patrick really loosens up and starts swearing more dlkfjdfd

Woke up today to find out Halsey has set the stage for a new hunt for fans to go on. In true Halsey fashion, it's cryptic with a distinct visual style we can probably expect from this era.

So let's explore, shall we?

A Lil' Timeline:

Halsey played the 27th at Lollapalooza India. During their set before they began to play Gasoline, a visual on screen displayed a URL: FOR MY LAST TRICK (click to go to the site).

The Website:

The theme behind the website seems to be opening a miscellaneous stick/patch packet.

The first thing is prompting the user to "pull to open" as in a tag to swipe off. You can see the collection of patches behind the plastic wrap. Once you finally open the package, all the patches will disperse.

This is where the Internet sleuthing begins, people. 24 unique patches (technically 25, but I'll get into that later) with different meanings. Let's get into it.

1 - SNA Flight Tag

So really obscure, but googling Air California flight tag brought me to this used bookstore site. In any case, the thing to notice is the date it is attributed with, 1968.

2 - Vintage Blotter Art

According to this blog (which is the only place I could find the image), this is a vintage blotter from 1994. Blotter art is an "...art form printed on perforated sheets of absorbent blotting paper infused with liquid LSD."

3 - Blythe Dolls

I believe this doll is a Blythe doll. Image reverse search does not come up with an exact result, but from the details you can make out, the dolls eyes are quite clear. Which looks a lot like Blythe Dolls, a doll brand that came out in 1972. Their gimmick was that the eyes could move left to right.

4 - Witch Halsey

Unsure, but it would seem it's Halsey as a witch. The aesthetics are similar to IICHLIWP (H4).

If the main theme here is the 70s, there’s the movie Season of the Witch that came out in 1973, February 14th. It’s apparently commentary on traditional American suburban lifestyle through the perspective of a housewife who does not like her place in life. She meets a witch and progressively gets into the occult.

5, 18, 19, 23 - Outside of USA

5: It's hard to tell what most of the words are, but the text "Pagado" (Spanish for "paid") is on the piece of paper. . The particular location might be Palenque, a Mexican city. Relevant date: June 25th, 1977.

18: Belleville. Based on a real winter carnival programme. Belleville is a a city in Ontario, Canada. Relevant date: 1971.

19: “We smokers all want to be non-smokers too” or something along these lines. I'm trusting online translation for this (German to English). Unable to find when this was made.

23: “For Us.” French. The image search doesn’t result anything. Unable to find when this was made.

6 - Peril is My Pay

Based off of a detective book involving traveling. The font is the exact same as one of the book covers. It was published in 1960s.

7 - I have something to tell you

A sign up. I assume it has to do with being updated on any album news.

Looking through the inspect tab you can see the information is being sent to “Sony Fan Music.” It does take note of which country you are in and your address.

8 , 9 - Round visuals

I think these are visuals to give grasp to the 70s theme. It’s reminiscent of 60’s/70’s clothing/aesthetic.

10 - Michigan license plate.

1971 comes up in the plate. Michigan has come up in HFK (H2), on Bad At Love. I doubt this has anything to do about the “boy back in Michigan” but perhaps traveling back throughout her albums.

11 - Ghost

Jan 27th 2014, interesting date to put since this is the date this is all happening, just a decade after.

I've seen some people say this is meant to be the anniversary for Ghost, the song. Although it came out in 2014, its release date was in July, and it originally came out on sound cloud on February 3rd. So unsure why Jan 27th is there. EDIT: I have been made aware that Jan 27th 2014 was its international release date! I am but a fool.

The text can be in response to the lyric “Where did you go?” and the themes on the song of someone leaving. IDK, this could also be a meta thing. If a theme here is traveling and visiting locations/people, then perhaps one thing you won't find if the ghost?

Additionally, this follows the theme of revisiting her previous albums.

12 - Cannel 17

WPHL-TV is a television station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, serving as the local outlet for The CW Television Network. The logos here are form the 60’s/70’s.

13 - Master Mystifier

Or, alternatively, Harry Houdini. The date I do not believe has any relevance here but perhaps the idea of magic.

I came about the google search “Houdini’s Last Trick” where his last trick is widely asked about. It would seem to be an inspiration for the name of the website. So potentially Halsey will lean into magic, tricks, and deception.

14 - Calling Cards

Text on card: “Compliments - May I See (C) You (U) Home? If not, please return this card.”

“May I See You Home” seemed to be a common phrase for calling cards. They were handed out to ask people out. Again, the font and images are similar to H4 aesthetic. These were used in the 18th and 19th century.

15 - B&W Hair

Oh, I actually no idea.

16 - Candy

The closest I could get to finding what this meant is when this font was used for the book Candy by Maxwell Kenton, published in 1958.

As wiki describes the plot "Candy Christian, aged eighteen, is an extremely pretty and desirable but naïve young woman, who finds herself in a variety of farcical sexual situations as a result of her desire to help others. The men in her life, regardless of age or relationship, wish only to possess her."

17 - Southern-Belle

Clearly the saying southern belle. A girl born form the south, typically with certain attributes. The saying came from the idea that “... a girl who was expected to grow up into a lady. She was supposed to be fragile and flirtatious while also sexually innocent. She was beautiful but risky to touch, like porcelain.”

20 - Rabbit

I couldn’t find anything that looks the same, but I assume it has to do with Alice and Wonderland. Concerning dates, the book was published in the 1800s, while the arguably most famous iteration (the animated movie) came out in the 50s.

However, this can relate to the potential theme of magic and deception and girl/womanhood. But I’m also inclined to think the rabbit might have nothing to do with Wonderland and might be something else all together.

21 - K-Mart

Wiki comes in handy here. As described, “Satisfaction Always icon seen on Kmart branded packaging until the mid-to-late 70s, adapted from a hanging sign displayed in every early Kmart store.” So 70’s themed.

22 - Eye, Eye, Eye, and Eye

The eyes. Girl IDK, they’re eyes. They kind of remind me of the biblically accurate angels and the eyes they have. Although, I doubt that's what they're meant to be.

24 - Cigarette

People seem to think this relates more to Badlands, and I’m inclined to agree.

I just kinda wanted to point out the cool coding stuff they've done. When the patches are still in the plastic bag, they're always randomized in which order they're in (you have to refresh to notice this). They also disperse in a randomized order. I thought maybe the way they disperse could be a trail of sorts, like a map. But it seems totally random. I still find it cool how they've done that, every time in a different location, as if you open the package they come out uniquely for each person.

Oh and about the 25 patch, it seems the first patch in your packet appears twice when you open it. Idk if the number 25 matters or if this was done by accident. But the 25th patch is a duplicate, and never one in particular, just which ever is the first in your shuffle.

reading: finished rereading tgcf lol,,, in loving memory of square checkbox: apparently apple is switching to circle ones? hateful wikipedia page for kessler syndrome my friend @celestialtourguide sent me a dm to ask about a few of the characters in this manuscript and i was immediately charmed by it. it's so pretty, i loved the informational blurbs, just really cool stuff. it was already on waybackmachine but i've gone ahead and updated it.

watching: kurtis conner looksmaxxing. weird little subculture peek. rewatched sideways' why the music in cats 2019 is worse than you thought because my roommate was interested. this led us to the same channel's why avatar has the most ironic soundtrack of all time because roommate misread ironic as iconic and she really likes that movie. no accounting for taste, but aight. much more interesting than i thought it would be. that video then lead us to tony hinnigan's woodwind demos because hell fuckin yes. big-ass panpipes.

i've been keeping up on dunmeshi anime in little watch sessions with my SO, and also am working through kill la kill with him! i've seen it before but he has not so i'm really enjoying that.

playing: fallow.

making: i managed to finish my secret samol gift in time for reveal day!!! comics are fuckin hard dude!!!! i don't know if i'll be doing it again but it was a fun challenge. i decided to use a New App for some reason instead of procreate because procreate has not been hitting right and i wanted comic half tone brushes for this project. app is called sketchbook, it's an orange icon with a pencil on it. shrug! it's fine! i'll probably keep using it for a bit. started working on an english paper piecing project! soliciting tips for that because right now my method is: cut out hexagon using pattern piece i made to be 1/4 in larger all around than the template, gluestick template onto hexagon, baste edges down neatly, whip-stitch right sides together. remove template once all six sides have something attached. i'm sure there's a better way to streamline this process, i'll have to experiment. this will end up as a dice bag i think.

finally, pottery starts again this week! so next week will have some of that in here

eating: ah beans i did not do a good job keeping track of this. uh. made the ground pork & cabbage thing again because my roommate got SO much napa cabbage for making kimchi and we had a shitload left over. napa cabbage isn't as good as a more standard cabbage for this imo, standard cabbage tends to be a little sweeter i think once it's cooked in? idk. had some stage 5 mental illness moments last week trying to cook dinner on a very short time scale with lots of other shit to do, following a recipe because fucking of course my roommate wanted me to cook with a recipe that night. anyways.

misc: like said at the top, somehow i managed to sign up for Another Activity god damn it. so now every saturday evening i run dnd. tl;dr i'm in a group irl that meets biweekly, someone who i give a lift to for that was complaining in the car that their other online group's dm ragequit after his encounter wasn't well-balanced (skill issue) and before thinking about it i just was like oh well i could probably step in if you need! god damn ittttt lol i have missed dming so it should be fun. i vibe checked them for a session 0 last week and they seem chill and honestly shouldn't be too much work on my end, especially if i yoink plots from mdzs ha ha ha. other than that, all is basically well. i've settled back into a schedule, applied for some summer positions (!), and absolutely hate the amount of busy work in one of my two classes. yippee

Misc. Phalaris translation notes

Apparently Kyo almost wore a turkey on his head with glittering eyes for the Phalaris photoshoot?!

There were so many interviews at once, and props to anyone working on full-length translations, but I decided to take out the parts from the magazines and booklet that were the most interesting to me and mix them all in one post.

- Kyo feels like if he does not work harder, he'd die. He can't settle for the little/standard that's expected of him. Also, he tried new styles of singing first and foremost for himself, because he would not have found it interesting otherwise.

- Apparently Kyo almost wore a turkey on his head with glittering eyes for the Phalaris photoshoot?!

- For the Oboro photoshoot, at first he wanted to actually be the pregnant woman, or a very fat one, with a muddy face.

- Nobody said anything about how out-there he was in the photoshoots compared to the rest of the band, and he found that really kind.

- Shinya said that it’s a good thing the band is used to working remotely via their network, because it would be hell trying to get everyone in a room at the same hours. Kyo is an early riser (I think around 6AM?), while Shinya tends to go to sleep around that time, as a night owl. Shinya is able to fall asleep whenever he wants and he always feels rested.

- Schadenfreude took a whole lot of time to complete. The band combined two separate songs. Die is really impressed by Kaoru's efforts to meld the two together.

- Same with Kamuy, which is a combination of one of Die's songs and one of Kaoru's that was created in 2019.

- 13 was produced around the same time as Oboro.

- 13 is technically about a death-row inmate.

- Mouai ni Shosu is a love song.

- Mouai ni Shosu was recorded last but might have been completed earlier.

- Hibiki was also one of the last songs recorded, as it took a long time to settle. Apparently it sounded too much à-la-THE-FINAL at first.

- Eddie used to be a light song. But Kaoru, and I think Kyo, suggested that this and that part could be faster (”what if...?”), and in the end the whole song changed tempo.

- Most of the tracks Dir en grey composes at first are mid-tempo, or at least this time around they were.

- Kamuy was more difficult to compose than Schadenfreude.

- Kaoru was the one who came up with the general song order for Phalaris, but Kyo had almost the same idea.

- The title "Phalaris" was chosen shortly before the announcement for the new album, from a list of other potential names that were almost all Kyo’s suggestions, I think?

- Of course, of all members (beside Kyo), Shinya is the one who knew right away what Phalaris was hahah. He likes cruel things and he has read a lot of novels. Shinya likes that genre as long as it’s not movies?

- The reason for the late completion of the album this time and the number of mixing engineers credited is that, with COVID-19 being less of an impediment, it seems like all of the music industry began working on production, so some of the engineers that Kaoru contacted declined their request, and those who ended up accepting said that they could not work on all of the album's songs.

- When they compose, Kaoru intentionally sends the other members really vague propositions like: "There's also other ways to approach this" to encourage them to try other avenues without narrowing their scope too much. He purposely does not want to look at a song as close to being complete until time is out, to leave the realm of possibilities wide open and keep exploring.

- It seems like Dir en grey kind of had the idea to go for a "dark" album throughout production. Kyo commented that it’s something that Dir en grey is basically drawn to anyway, whether they want to or not.

- Kaoru said that the Phalaris album was “catchy”, not in a pop sense but because once you start listening, you’re hooked and cannot stop listening.

- Apparently a lot of Die's compositions tend to have a "singing melody", which Kyo may or may not get inspired by. If it's too close to the vocal melody in the end though, the band tries to make it different, because otherwise it sounds like a pop song in that regard.

Disclaimer that I am not fluent at all in Japanese, so there may be some mistakes, but I triple-checked that turkey thing and it’s accurate hah.

10 Songs On Repeat

Tagged by @fivekoboldsinacoat. Put the Spotify "on repeat" playlist on shuffle and share the first ten results, then tag ten people. (Or, I guess, if you don't use Spotify, share your top ten songs you listen to on repeat.)

Also, following his lead in linking to YouTube for accessibility. I preferentially went with live performances where possible, unless the sound quality sucked too bad by my own totally subjective standards. Just didn't have the spoons for more translation work today, but I also included a few lyric snippets where I could because why not.

The "On Repeat" can be pretty dangerous, dealing with somebody who is as prone to going off on neurospicy kicks as I am. Instead of, say, a couple of weeks of nonstop Delta blues, '80s synth, or Latin American metal? This time, we've apparently got wall-to-wall Swedish punk-adjacent stuff. (Which is more likely than most other genres here to not be English language. Handier for me learning Swedish than for most of y'all!) It's also mostly from newer bands.

What was the last thing you purchased off of Amazon? We don’t have Amazon. But the last thing I bought online apart from food deliveries is a screwdriver for my laptop. Some soil got inside and I didn’t feel like going to a repair shop to get fixed because monies so I got a screwdriver to open my laptop up and shake all the dirt out. But then everyone around me was like “noooooo don’t do that you might poke something and make it worse, just take it to a professional,” so in the end I got swayed. I’ve never even opened the package, it’s just sitting in my room lol.

What are you wearing right now? I have on this cool shirt I saw at Uniqlo that basically has a printout of one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works; and my favorite denim jeans. White Chucks. I was supposed to be headed home after my me-time today but it’s been raining all afternoon and evening and the way to my house is apparently flooded already, so I took a detour to a (surprise surprise) Starbucks in the meantime to let the weather and the flood subside.

My mom just thought I was making a fuss and she was under the impression that I only wanted glasses to look like the other kids, so my vision suffered a lot back then and so did my grades (because I could barely see what’s on the blackboard anyway). She only promptly shut up when the school already sent her a notice that I was in dire need of glasses.

Are you happy with your life right now? Yes. I’ve recently come to terms with the fact that I’m likely under a new wave of depression, but growth has taught me to cope with it a lot better than I used to two years ago. Peter Gabriel at Chase Center

The Peter Gabriel concert was one of my tentpole events for the season. Long a part of my life and listening, Gabriel is the only act in the Year of the Concert that I have seen before. As my concert season began with lots of unknowns, the Gabriel show was saddled with expectation that he would deliver a high point no matter what the rest of the year may deliver. And with lofty expectations, comes a lot of dread that the concert could not live up.

Gabriel has provided the soundtrack to my life, an omnipresent entity from junior high to the present. I remember first hearing Shock the Monkey on the radio in junior high, rushing to school to talk with my friends about this spectacularly weird new song. I vividly recall my first girlfriend in college, gleefully playing Games Without Frontiers for me for the time. I fondly reminisce on the first time I heard the album Us, as KFOG decided to play the entire album on the air, as I drove around aimlessly, making sure not to miss a second. I remember devilishly questioning an Adidas marketing flack about their use of the Passion soundtrack for a shoe commercial, pondering aloud how they chose the (fantastic) soundtrack of a reviled movie to hawk their running shoes. And, of course, the media tie-ins are legendary: John Cusack with the boom box in Say Anything, Nicholas Cage pining away to I Grieve in City of Angels.

A top-5 artist all time for me, Gabriel even went to far as to redeem and restore my love for Sting and the Police. My first several attempts to see Sting in person were fraught with disappointment and boredom, but the concert collaboration with Gabriel in 2016 was wonderful, as Sting seemed much more interested in singing Gabriel’s classic hits, while Gabriel reinvigorated the Police standards at the same time.

And it is against this backdrop of love and expectation that I wandered into the Chase Center to see this icon perform live once again. I knew he was featuring a new album for this show, which led to some nerves, as I had not yet sampled this work. Rightfully so, as the new work made up about 2/3 of the songs played during the show.

The show started off strong, with his band gathered around a simulated campfire for an intimate performance of At Night, they quickly spread thereafter into a larger stage that quickly dissolved any sense of intimacy. What became apparent quickly was that Gabriel was more interested in art and artifice than in entertainment. Gabriel was completely preachy throughout the night, warning against the dangers of Artificial Intelligence and climate change, while extolling peace.

Make no doubt, the show was visually spectacular. A multi-screen display showed multiple shadowy images of Gabriel in various poses, an effect that seemed more Michael Jackson than Peter Gabriel. Short movies punctuated Gabriel’s periodic sermons with visual backdrops to unfamiliar new songs.

I’ve read some reviews saying that the show was electric, mesmerizing, and entrancing. I would argue the opposite, the audience was fruitlessly waiting to have an opportunity to explode. Instead, the half-empty audience gave polite applause to every song, while Gabriel’s sermons would occasionally be punctuated by a lone voice yelling, “We love you, Peter,” which would sing out clearly through the otherwise dead silence.

Gabriel cautiously trickled out classic songs. Only 3 of the 10 songs from the first set were from older albums, with the first set closer Sledgehammer the only one that could be considered a hit. The second set continued the trend. Only at the midway point of set 2 did Gabriel start giving the audience the consistent hits they craved, closing with Red Rain, Big Time and Solsbury Hill among the final five songs. Solsbury Hill, a perfect pop song if ever there was one, finally gave the audience their first opportunity to release into rapture, but then the band bowed and walked off the stage. Two single-song encores followed, with a delightful performance of In Your Eyes, and a riveting and searing version of Biko that slow-played its way to the end in a way that seared itself in memory.

The show did not live up to expectations, but expectations were astronomical. I look forward to listening to the new album I/O and considering it on its own merits and maybe growing to love it like many other Gabriel albums. But the show itself will only stand out as disappointment, delivering lots of pretty imagery, plenty to feel guilty about, and few visceral thrills.

So long, 45.

Note: this is a draft that I wrote in 2018 but didn’t post until 2023. I am now 50, and 2022 was a pretty great year, all things considered! 2018 was a rough year for me. But there was a lot of beauty in it, and I felt like I managed to keep moving forward despite a lot of setbacks. Here are the things that I found to enjoy along the way, or that helped to propel me along.

Culture

Music: Reissue of the Voyager Golden Record, Ozma Records. In a year in which our culture seems to be in retreat, turning inward and nursing resentments, it’s helpful to contemplate a time when we decided to embark on a project to understand our universe better and to capture a representation of all of our humanity to share with it. Voyager 1 is now 13 billion miles away from us, and it has carried this “message in a bottle” outside our solar system. I hope that by the the time it is found, we have regained some of the curiosity and optimism that Voyager’s launch represented. The box set is beautiful to look at, and the Related: The Farthest (a documentary on the Voyager mission and the curation of the Golden Record) and this article about the engineers who have been guiding Voyager’s journey for 40 years.

Music: Phoebe Bridgers, Stranger In the Alps. As it turns out, I listened to a LOT of younger female singers and female-fronted bands this year (Bridgers, Vagabon, Diet Cig, Jay Som, Alyeska, Big Thief, Japanese Breakfast, Allison Crutchfield), at the same time that my streaming history suggests that I sought a lot of solace in familiar dad rock. Even before it became apparent that one of the trends of 2017 was a resurgent feminism, I found that these women just had more compelling things to say than most of their indie rock male counterparts this year. Among those strong female voices, Phoebe Bridgers’s debut album really stood out for me. Her songs are confessional without being maudlin or self-serving, and the album combines folk arrangement with gorgeous production and delivers melodies that I am compelled to sing along with. I linked to the video for “Motion Sickness” because it’s one of the more uptempo numbers on the album, but the track that drew me in was “Funeral.”

Music: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour. Tom Petty released Full Moon Fever when I was a senior in high school. The summer after I graduated, several of my friends and I drove the 80 miles to go see Tom and the Heartbreakers play at the Summit in Houston, TX. They blew the roof off the joint and provided the soundtrack for most of my college years and a lot of the years after. I drifted away from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers after Into the Great Wide Open disappointed me, but my favorite songs of his never left heavy rotation for me. After Bowie and Prince died in 2016 without my having seen them perform, I vowed not to let any of my other favorites come around on tour again without seeing them play live. The Heartbreakers’ show at the Frank Erwin Center this May was one of the highlights of my year, and when Tom Petty died in October, I was sad but felt fortunate that I’d gotten to see him go out at the top of his game.

Music: Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, The Nashville Sound.

Book: Stories of Your Life and Others, Ted Chiang. I didn’t read as much as I should have this year, but this collection of short stories that I discovered after seeing the movie Arrival blew me away.

Other: Diana crosses No Man’s Land in Wonder Woman. The Millennium Falcon joins the fray in The Last Jedi. Loot train! Mike Ehrmantraut silently takes apart a gas cap on Better Call Saul. Steve and Dustin’s unlikely friendship in Stranger Things 2. The Big Sick. “The Watch” podcast. “Pod Save America.”

Fitness

Training with Beckie Lough at Austin Simply Fit. I’ve been working out with Beckie as my personal trainer since late 2015, and I’ve finally gotten through some initial problems with form and old nagging injuries (see below). Beckie has trained me, encouraged me, and gotten me to appreciate weight training as an end unto itself instead of just cross-training to prevent injuries on my runs.

OrangeTheory Fitness. Orange Theory is an hour-long interval training workout class. You wear a heart-rate monitor and are encouraged to adjust your effort to keep your heart rate in various target zones (the orange zone is the target which gives the workout chain its name). It alternates between treadmill and weight room activities. I go 2-3 days a week at 5am

Next Level Physical Therapy. I’ve had less-than-great posture for years, and it has taken its toll. While I’ve always gotten regular exercise, strength training wasn’t part of my routine until recently. When I finally started trying to get stronger, I found that I was really limited by weakness in my shoulder, with tightness, knots, and crunchiness that restricted my movement and precluded making gains. I’ve tried a few different physical therapists going back to 2014, but this is the first one I’ve found that really made a difference.

Waterloo Sparkling Water. I try to drink a gallon of water per day, and I find that my enthusiasm for the habit peters out later in the day. Topo Chico is great, but those iconic glass bottles get expensive. Austin local chain

RX Bars. Even as an omnivore/carnivore, I find it a little bit hard to ingest all the protein that the books tell me that I need.

Things

Bombas socks. I’ve been using the same gym socks for nearly 20 years. Not the same brand, mind you-- the same pairs of socks. I kept seeing the ads for Bombas show up on my FB feed, and I decided to try them out. They really are comfortable, thick, snuggly, great for wearing with your feet up on the couch on a cold day without feeling like they’re too thick or too hot on a run. The honeycomb structure that provides support on the mid arch really does make a significant difference, and getting rid of the seam across the toe is great, too. I’ve gotten rid of all of my old socks and replaced them with these and my feet have never been happier. You can feel good about your purchase, too: they donate a pair to homeless shelters for every pair you buy.

Lego brick separator. This thing costs just $2.49, though it’s also included in some of the larger Lego sets. and it is one of the most useful pieces of plastic I’ve ever encountered. It helps separate Lego tiles that are stuck together and hard to get leverage on. My son and I each have one now and it makes short work of de-constructing Lego sets to get ready for the next build. I shudder to think how often I used sharp blades in precarious ways to achieve the same result less effectively in my youth.

it’s been a couple of months since suji’s been preparing for her next album, and she’s found herself following a pattern. while she was always hoping for an album that sounds a little different from her past ones, she didn’t expect the songs to all sound so solemn and dark. not that she’s complaining, but she’s found herself hitting a little writer’s block.

and so she does what she always does: call up minwoo.

she bets he’s tired of her calls at this point, but a short conversation with him always seems to spark up some creativity in her mind. “i’m surprised you haven’t blocked me yet,” is what she says when he finally picks up. she can hear him laugh over the phone, and it puts a smile on her face as well.

“my daughter was just complaining about some kid in her class so you saved me from having to listen to that.”

“what is she saying this time?” suji’s heard a lot of stories about minwoo’s daughter, and she’ll admit that there’s been a few songs that got inspired by those said stories. not by his daughter exactly, but the situations that minwoo relay over to her. since she’s grown a little older, she’s forgotten about the crushes that junior high kids could have as well as those light feelings that feel like youth.

“apparently he’s super childish or something? they’re literal children, but i guess she doesn’t like to consider herself one.”

it sounds like the typical complaint that it makes her burst into laughter. “i’m sure all junior high school kids feel that way.” the conversation gets cut short as she hears the sound of his family rustling in the background. while it didn’t last long, it’s given her a spark of inspiration which is exactly what she needed.

how nice would it be if all relationships ended like fairytales? admittedly, she still wishes for that herself. she’s not shy to call herself a hopeless romantic and though she knows it isn’t realistic, she wouldn’t mind all those cliche movie tropes happening to her.

she likes to think she’s not alone in hoping for happy endings. however, those are only really possible with young love, and that’s a statement coming from her own personal experience. letting out a chuckle, she scribbles down fairytale, child, and happy ending onto her notebook.

she’s promised herself to stop thinking of him, but there’s moments where he still lingers in the back of her mind. the thoughts aren’t the same as they used to, but he’s still left behind so many what if’s in her head that she can’t completely shake them away. nevertheless, he’s only remained as thought fragments and not actual feelings which is a relief in her book.

there’s got to be a small piece in everybody that wishes that they could have all their childhood dreams come true, no? throw away all the naivety and the hope that it’ll actually happen, of course, but to throw away that actual wish? she thinks that’s a lie. there’s a child lying inside everybody, especially when it comes to love.

and while it sucks, she thinks those hopeful dreams end up fighting with the actual reality. people know that it won’t come true and yet they can’t help but wish for it. it’s like wishing on a shooting star or blowing out the candles to a birthday cake—a bunch of actions that mean absolutely nothing yet still continue like a tradition because people don’t want to admit that the possibility has reached a zero.

at the end of the day, aren’t all adults simply grown up children? children who have grown up and learned to adjust to the reality but have kept the spark inside. it’d be devastating if that spark was to get lit out.

before she knows it, suji’s scribbled down a few more words and phrases. a bunch of unorganized thoughts, but it’s going somewhere. a poem described as a song for everybody who’s kept those forbidden wishes hidden deep inside. for everybody who’s remained a child and hoped for happy endings.

for everybody that’s exactly like herself.

Harry had come up with a thousand scenarios of how this day would play out. Actually, he’d been thinking of this day since the moment he’d received the news. He didn’t dare to hope that she’d say yes to coming back for a sequel. He’d been sure that they would write her character off, give a lame excuse for how his love interest could not make a return and make his character forget about her completely to move on with a new girl in town. It would have been great if it was that easy in real life. Once someone was written off the script, they were gone for good. Real-life relationships were not that simple. Goodbye didn’t mean ‘never see you again’. You would still share the same friend circle and social bubbles, and it was worse when you two worked in the same industry. Harry didn’t know how he’d lasted a year without running into her, not since the Grammys.

“Didn’t you two date?”

“No.” Harry shook his head, but his eyes stayed glued on Y/N from across the room. She wasn’t looking his way, too busy saying hello to everyone else. “No,” he repeated, more to himself than to his co-star. “We didn’t.”

“But she wrote an entire album about you,” said the other twin. What was her name again? Lulu?

“Luna!” cried her sister, Lex. “You can’t ask him that!”

“No, it’s okay,” Harry said with a tight smile, slightly annoyed by the blonde twins, but he didn’t want to seem like an ass on the first day of filming. “And I don’t know if it was for me. You should ask Y/N.”

“Ask me what?”

Harry flinched when he looked up and saw Y/N padding towards them. She hugged the twins, who seemed way too excited. Harry guessed they were Y/N’s fans. They gave off crazy fangirl vibes, probably just pretending not to know the drama to interrogate him. He couldn’t blame them for assuming he was the villain and definitely could not blame Y/N for portraying him as one. It was more important that he knew who he was and how much he had changed since his last relationship. Maybe they could finally be friends.

“Were they bothering you?” Y/N asked him once the twins had left.

Harry nodded. “They’re your friends?”

“Oh, I met them last year on tour. I’m surprised you don’t know them. They were on Disney.”

“I don’t watch Disney,” Harry admitted with a smile. “Well, not today’s Disney.”

“Understandable.” Y/N nodded and bit her lip. She seemed guarded with her straight back and hands hidden behind her. She eyed him up and down, quite subtle yet noticeable. “How have you been?”

“Pretty good,” he said, nodding slowly. “You?”

“Yeah, but mostly tired because of tour.”

“You’re done?”

“Yup, last night was the last show.”

“Nice.”

Y/N raised an eyebrow. “Nice?”

Harry blinked. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No.” Y/N giggled. “You still sound very...you.”

“Well, shouldn’t I?”

“Yeah, you should. But it’s been a year so…I mean, you haven’t changed much.”

“Right,” he said lowly, his eyes falling to his feet. Harry supposed he should say something else, perhaps bringing up another random topic to discuss, but all he could think about was what had happened between them. Things had been messy, hadn’t they? How could they go back to before that? Before her first song about him. Before he’d chosen someone else over her.

Or he could talk about her new relationship. She’d been in a happy relationship for almost six months, right? No wait, hadn’t they broke up two weeks ago? He wasn’t sure because he hadn’t been catching up. If they’d broken up, he’d sound like an ass to even mention her ex’s name. He should just stay quiet.

“I’ll see you later?” she said, gesturing at her stylist who was waiting by the door.

Harry could ask her right now -- the reason she’d agreed to film the sequel to their first movie together. He’d heard from a very reliable source that she’d specifically asked her agent to decline any project that he was in. So did this mean they were good? That she didn’t hate him anymore? He could have gathered his courage and got the answer right then…

“Yeah, see you.”

...but he didn’t.

And so she gave him a smile and a little wave, then happily returned to her stylist.

“See you tomorrow, Y/N!”

“See you, Annie!” Y/N said as she put the rest of her things into her tote bag. Her new driver had got her schedule mixed up, and so she had to wait here for another half an hour. She was in no rush. It had been a light first day, and she’d had a fun time getting to know the new cast members and catching up with old friends.

She sat on the sofa in the lobby, legs crossed, texting her best friend about her day. She’d purposely left out the short off-screen conversation with Harry, and her best friend didn’t even bother to ask. In their world, he didn’t exist, and his name was censored in every conversation like a curse word that was even worse than ‘cunt’. Nevertheless, she didn’t hate him anymore. She was doing just fine on her own, being busy with her career, and she’d been in a happy relationship after her fall out with him.

She and the guy, a model, had broken up two weeks ago due to long distance and some differences that they could not change. They had ended on good terms and decided to stay friends. They said you could only stay friends with your ex when you still had feelings for each other, or you had never loved each other that much in the first place. For her, it was probably the latter. Her previous relationship had been more platonic than romantic, apparently. So she had nothing but the best to say about him.

As she was going through her camera roll, just reminiscing about the past, she heard footsteps approaching and looked up to find Harry. He offered a smile and gestured to the spot beside her on the sofa. “May I sit here? My ride is late.”

“Yeah, sure.” She hurriedly scooted over.

“Good job today,” he said. “You were great.”

“Thanks, so were you.” She smiled, and they both looked away at the same time. This was so awkward. She hated small talk. She’d never had to have small talk with Harry. Conversations with him used to be so easy and natural and silly. Whatever this was, it wasn’t them.

“Can we just be normal?”

At first, Y/N thought she’d been the one who’d said it, so when she realised it’d been Harry, she was speechless.

He swallowed and sat a bit straighter, still not looking at her. “I don’t want us to be weird and awkward.”

“Okay,” she said.

He cleared his throat. “Wanna try again?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Okay, not to sound like an ass but when Joey kept forgetting his lines, I was so pissed off, I could throw a chair at the wall.”

“Right?!” exclaimed Y/N, feeling free to have finally broken out of her shell. “Like, he doesn’t even have many lines. I know he’s new but damn...you can’t get far if you don’t learn your goddamn lines.”

Harry shook with laughter. “Oh God, we sound like dicks, don’t we?”

“Maybe.” Y/N laughed, covering her mouth. “But you know what? We can’t be nice in this industry. It’s impossible.”

“Shhh, if someone heard this, we would be into big trouble.”

“Oh please, I’ve had worse articles written about me than ‘Y/N speaks facts about her lazy co-star’.”

Harry tossed his head back and cackled. “The worst one I’ve got this week was ‘Harry Styles hates therapists.’”

“What?!” Y/N gasped. “No way! That’s so stupid!”

“Right?” Harry rolled his eyes. “I could get all my therapists to speak up for me but I’m kinda immune to bullshit now.”

“Therapists? Like plural?”

“Yeah, one in every city.”

“Damn.”

“Yeah.”

Y/N rubbed her hands onto her legs. “Rough year?”

Harry’s eyes rolled to the back of his head as he leaned back. “You have no idea.” Then he swept his hair out of his eyes, sucked in a breath, and finally looked at her. “I wish I could have talked to you, though.”

She bit her tongue, knowing what she was about to say next would disappoint her best friend so much, but she had to. “So do I.”

Harry looked taken aback before his lips curled into a smile. “It’s silly, isn’t it? I haven’t talked to you in a year, and I feel like I know everything that’s happened to you except that I don’t.”

What he’d just said might make no sense for most people, but Y/N knew exactly what he meant. She nodded and wetted her lip. “You only know as much as everyone else does.”

“Yeah, I got updates on you from the news and our friends.”

“Same.” Y/N smiled back. “I hate how they write articles about your new haircut but not mine.”

“I like your new hair colour.”

“Thanks. I like your new car.”

Then they both burst out laughing. It was fun and also a little bit strange that Y/N didn’t feel the same anxiety talking to him as she used to. It must be because they had grown and were now meeting again as better people.

“Damn, my ride's here,” Y/N said as she read the text from her driver. “I gotta go now.”

“Oh, okay.” Harry stood up and followed Y/N to the entrance. “Hey, just wondering--”

“Yeah?”

“Am I...am I still blocked?” He looked a bit flustered as she tilted her head and squinted her eyes. “On your phone. Because I remember you having my number blocked--”

“I unblocked you on your birthday.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah.” Y/N shrugged. “I should’ve sent you a happy birthday text but...I didn’t want your girlfriend to get the wrong ideas.”

“My ex.”

“Yeah, I know.”

They smiled at each other one last time before saying goodbye. Y/N knew it was silly, but she was hoping he would go after her.

Ding.

A notification popped up when she was in the car. She was almost home, and it was from Harry’s number. He’d sent her a link with a message that said, “Hope you like it :)”.

Curious, she tapped on it and was directed to an audio file titled ‘Track 5’. The upload date was last year. About two weeks after their short conversation at the Grammys.

Hurriedly, she fumbled inside her bag for her iPods and put it on before she pressed play.

“Hey, Jeff, I couldn’t sleep so I wrote this song. Listen and let me know if it should go on the album.”

Then came the piano intro. It sounded good, so Y/N wondered how it hadn’t ended up on his last album.

But when he started to sing...

The song was for her. He’d written it when her new relationship had gone public. Y/N sat there, staring blankly ahead until the honking of a car tore open her inner peace, and reality came crashing back in. The driver dropped her off at her house. Instead of going inside, she stood on her front steps and replayed the song one more time. When it ended, she decided to text him: Why didn’t this make it to the album?

She didn’t know where he was now, but it showed ‘typing’ in less than a second, as if he’d been waiting in their chat since he’d sent that link.

You would’ve hated me, Y/N.

True, she replied. Still, I would’ve loved the song lowkey. And added, I love it btw.

He took so long to type that it was driving her crazy. She flopped down on the concrete stair with her phone clutched in her hands, her heart thundering against her ribcage. Anxiety popped like a balloon when his message appeared: Were you happier?

She reread it again and again.

No.

I wasn’t either, he responded. I kept getting deja vu.

That last message made Y/N bury her face into her palm and giggle like a fool. She thought for a second and wrote: I could come roast you in person now if that’s what you prefer. I think we’ve never had a proper roasting.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everybody!

The start of this year was similar to that of the mini-series “WandaVision”

(my runner-up show of the year)

We were all wounded by 2020, so we kinda locked into some delusional hopes for 2021. It was cute.

Eventually, things seemed suspicious, like plans weren’t going to go forward as we had hoped.

(Olson, my actress of the year)

Then, we chose our sides, and wanted (and still want) to fight each other.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons to want to fight.

Virus (best movie with symbiotes in it).

Our climate ( in more ways than one).

She was actually made free! But, there are “Free Britney Activists” in the world now, so... I guess now they’ll devote their time to freeing ALL of the Britney’s of the world.

Rich white people doing rich white people things.

The machines path to inevitably taking over.

The list goes on and on...

It didn’t take us long to give into fear and hate did it?

But, I don’t want to focus on that right now. Let’s celebrate some of the moments of 2021 that put smiles on our faces.

There has been an increase of conspiracy theories that certain artists, including The Weeknd, are conjuring spirits and portals to Hell during their performances.

Obviously, that’s nutty. But... nothing would surprise me after the last couple of years.

Perhaps the end of all things will kickoff during an Olivia Rodrigo concert.

And lastly, we learned a lot from “Squid Game” (my Show of the Year)

Probably not as much as we should have learned from it, but more to never play “Red Light, Green Light” ever again.

Vmin song analysis - Winter in August - Part 4

Since this analysis ended up being so long it has been divided in parts. This is part 4. If you haven’t read part 1, 2 or 3 yet I recommend doing so. This is the final part.

This started as a Spring Day analysis, but it has since grown immensely. I actually rather call it a thematic analysis or something, and while Spring Day is still at the core of it all, I go through many songs and details outside of Spring Day connections.

Taehyung obviously loves Spring Day a lot, and Jimin does too. It might seem weird to make a Vmin analysis out of Spring Day, but I just felt there was enough surrounding things to talk about. Even if they might be coincidence I do personally think they fit it very well with the other song theories I have made, and I have even mentioned Spring Day a few times before. As usual I suggest reading my other song analyses before you get into this one. You can find them all in My masterpost

I am going to talk mostly about connections that Taehyung has made and how he seems to use a lot of similar themes and references, but also things possibly connecting Vmin and Spring Day.

In this part I will focus on Taehyung and things he has mentioned in regards to making songs. Mostly I will speculate about the mixtape and then there is a final summary of this series of posts and the things I found the most interesting to keep in mind.

This is the last part and also the shortest one. I’ve had a lot of fun writing this, so before anything I just want to say thank you all for reading, and hope that you found this analysis worth your time.

7 - Taehyung’s songs not being all he wants to say

This isn’t related to Vmin, but I also want to mention how it seems some songs of Taehyung might be a bit held back, or at least that he might not fully be able to express all he wants in them.

The first example is how Namjoon says this about 4 o’clock in his fan café post:

"Through this song, Taehyung may not be able to express all of his emotions, but I hope that we'll be able to express it as much as possible. I hope it is the closest expression of Taehyung's dawn!"

To me this all sounds like an important moment for Taehyung, with emotions he wanted to express. And Namjoon points out Taehyung might not be able to express "all of his emotions" as read in his fan café post. If this was all I might not react because I can understand it might be difficult for someone else to truly understand and fully express something that comes from someone else. For Stigma Namjoon also said it "sounds like Taehyung has his own story". But of course for most of their solo songs on Wings we didn’t get to hear all that much of the meaning behind them.

But somehow there are a few of these expressions and examples where it really seems like Taehyung might be held back somewhat, perhaps in particular when it comes to songwriting.

There is of course the Christmas song, and that is probably the most direct example. Even more so relevant from a Vmin perspective because it also touches on the subject of romantic expressions between Vmin because of the lyrics being “not fit for two men to sing” and being denied for that reason.

Then we also have the way Taehyung spoke about Sweet Night and Inner Child.

First in this Vlive with Namjoon, where he said he tends to write what he has felt himself when speaking about Inner Child.

In the same clip Taehyung also said it was difficult to get to express the things he wanted. That the staff had a hard time and that he wasn't able to realize what was in his mind. But it’s very difficult to say if this was about sound or lyrics/expression.

It’s really impossible to make a song analysis for Vmin and not reference other analysis of other songs at this point... But I’ve talked about Sweet Night before in Sweet Night - Song analysis and HERE.

But then he later on also confirmed in an interview that Sweet Night in particular was meant for his mixtape, and thus not meant for the drama. Once again it’s a song that starts from Taehyung’s feelings.

We know that Taehyung likes to write things he has felt, and we know he has sometimes seemingly had struggles to express those things. I don’t know if these other examples (except with Happy Christmas) are more about being unable to express it because he doesn’t know how, but it could also be him not being able to express certain things.

Because then there is the "Tone it down" comment he apparently got to hear from Bang PD which Taehyung mentioned in relation to the making of BE when talking about his own mixtape.

Yoongi brings up a valid question, because while we know that Blue & Grey is a song that talks about Tae’s hardships and that BTS in general can bring up “darker” topics. We don’t know if this was a comment on a particular song or if Tae had several and we have no clue to what kind of details they might want Taehyung to tone down. I do know many (not just Vminies) have wondered if it might be LGBT+ related, but again we only have speculations here.

Speaking of LGBT+ I also can’t help but notice that there are 3 possible LGBT+ references in Taehyung’s songs. The first and most obvious being the lyric reference to the movie Moonlight in 4 o’clock, secondly the cover of Confessions of a mask seemingly being used as inspiration for imagery in Singularity, and thirdly the “You make me want to be a better man” line from Snow Flower being a possible reference from the movie As good as it gets. On top of this there is of course Happy Christmas basically being denied because it’s romantic lyrics that isn’t “fit” for Vmin to sing together.

I think that the music Taehyung makes is very important and personal to him, as he has said as much. I think it says very much that 4 o’clock and Happy Christmas involve Jimin to some extent at least and that Taehyung has many times talked about giving Jimin songs. If Taehyung is held back, it’s understandable that he would get frustrated. I think we even have a direct example with how he expressed the problem with his Christmas song live to us all.

What Taehyung gives us is things he wants to talk about and express, which to me is just another example of why looking at Taehyung and what he says and does kind of brings a bit more weight to any shipping or relationship conversation about him.

Lyrics like “sharing my fragile truth” or “I'll be back to tell another story of mine” to me in combination with the way he emphasis wanting to be honest and write about things he has felt is just another layer to Taehyung’s songs I find interesting.

What all these examples brings to mind to me as a Vminie is the Vmin Unit interview and Taehyung's "As honestly as possible".

For me it feels like Taehyung is telling us his story and his feelings “as well as he can” by expressing things through his songs, but that there could be reasons he isn’t saying everything he wishes he could say and perhaps even that the company might advise him to keep some things a bit more vague.

8. Taehyung’s mixtape

There are a few interesting aspects about Taehyung’s mixtape and what we might get on it and this section will be more speculation and theories about upcoming things.

First of all we know that Taehyung said there is a song that will be very similar to 4 o’clock on his mixtape (he talked about this the same day as Vmin’s unit interview for Friends). Another translation explains it as more of a “continuation” of 4 o’clock, which is definitely interesting if that’s the case.

Then there is just the general fact that Vmin seem very interested in collaborating and show a lot of interest in each other’s music in general.

We also got Taehyung mention he is writing a song for sleepless nights when he had a conversation with an ARMY on weverse May 4th 2020, meaning after the release of Sweet night but before Blue and Grey.

We did also get a snippet of the song “Sleep” on April 21st 2021 (at 4.24 am) so that could also have been the song he was talking about. Regardless Taehyung is really using this theme a lot.

We also got some interesting things from Taehyung which people wonder if it might have to do with his mixtape and a new song. It started on April 1st when Tae came back to Weverse after a while and, amongst others, commented on this post by an ARMY.

This is a very small detail, but the ARMY mentions Jimin as “a soft sunny spot of a spring day” and Taehyung as “the gentle breeze that brushes against your skin...” and Taehyung’s reply uses spring flowers (cherry blossoms) fluttering in the breeze. To be fair this is a reach, and it wouldn’t be weird if Tae didn’t think about Jimin’s role being in spring at all.

Then he tweeted about a song called Loop (by Peakboy) along with some cherry blossoms and a new expression.

Most interesting here is perhaps the line about “I am starting to feel more comfortable in the darkness.” As we know Taehyung seems to find the night sweet now, and this is another example that might point at it being something that has changed over time.

Then there is the "I flower purple you", which seems to be Taehyung's new name for cherry blossoms (or he just didn't have any better emoji). And if so the possibility of what that love means and how it can connect to spring and possibly Jimin (through his “Not Tata. It’s the face of I purple you” comment).

So we have the purple flower on the cover of Snow Flower and then Tae using Cherry blossoms together with the new tag. I am just saying that if Spring is a possible topic for a song on Taehyung’s album, I will be very curious to see what it says.

We also have Jimin drawing a Cherry blossom tree on his shoes in ITS. If Taehyung has been thinking about adding a song to his mixtape which uses references to spring or even more Cherry blossoms in particular, it’s possible Jimin was perhaps thinking of this song while choosing his motif. But this is definitely a reach and likely has no bigger meaning except that Jimin finds Cherry blossoms pretty.

And just recently at 4 o’clock in the morning on August 27th 2021 we had Jimin post “I miss you every single day” which does match with the lyrics of Spring Day “보고싶다”, though I definitely think this is too common to mean anything.

Still, there are a lot of small things to find, and either I am just finding things because I am looking, or there might be something to it. There are just a lot of matching things at this point, and I don’t know if they all can be random coincidences even though I am sure some of them are.

I don’t know if Taehyung will release his mixtape, or if he does if it will be what he wanted or at least started originally, but I hope he can release and sing the songs he wants to sing. Either way I will look forward to whatever he decided to share and am curious what stories he will sing about next.

9 - Summary

Spring Day was released in February 2017 as an addition to the Wings album on You never walk alone. Meaning it also comes very soon after Lie and Stigma which both have these themes of being in pain and feeling bad about themselves. There are also a lot of songs from Taehyung in particular (but also Jimin) about wanting to be together with someone but either having to wait or being unsure about the future. The time of release is the beginning of 2017, more precisely in February which was also a very good time for Vminies, not the least since we got the Soulmate claim. It was in other words during the Spring Day/Not today era where Vmin first claimed each other as soulmates in public.

If we put together that Taehyung both references the scene in 4 o'clock which Jimin is linked to, and uses scenes from Spring Day for Scenery it's possible Taehyung has done these references because they have personal meaning to him. And it's possible that since one of those references (4 o’clock) might be connected to Jimin that the other one (Spring Day) might be as well. Again, keep in mind the lyrics of Spring Day and in particular how it includes "you're my best friend" and how Taehyung has also used “Are you my best friend?” in the lyrics of Sweet Night which is also romantic.

Now of course this is all under the assumption that Winter Bear and Scenery too could be Vmin songs, but even if they aren’t at the very least it does seem to be examples of Spring Day being very important and inspiring for Taehyung. He references Spring Day directly for his own promotion of both Scenery and Winter Bear and considering the lyrics and themes I do think the songs could have connections through inspiration at least. What we end up with are these:

Possible similar themes and lyrics between Spring Day and other Taehyung songs.

Possible thematic similarities for Jimin's songs as well.

Jimin and Taehyung both loving Spring Day and creating moments with each other during it.

Hobi referencing Spring Day in reaction to a Vmin moment.

Spring Day possibly being referenced for 4 o’clock release.

Spring Day being directly referenced in relation to Scenery twice.

Spring Day being referenced with the release promo for Winter Bear.

The possible scene between Vmin in the park from 4 o’clock being referenced in Scenery (also the release time of the teaser), meaning in extension Spring Day references to Scenery could have a connection to the same person.

Vmin both having a certain love for the winter season and night which they have used in their songs.

Friends including "Cold winters" as something they have gone through together.

Friends including them saying they want to stay together forever.

An interesting timeline with how Vmin was during Spring Day era and what songs Tae wrote around that time.

Many of the expressions in Taehyung’s songs matching how he talks and thinks about Jimin.

12 out of 13 songs having either the theme of Night/Day or Winter. And 4 out of these songs having confirmed direct links between Vmin.

As usual there are a lot of things in the details that are much more difficult to know if they have meaning or not, but at the very least there are many things that fits with the narrative that Spring Day means a lot to Taehyung and that he could be influenced by the themes and how they also match well with Jimin in particular.

If I would sum it up with Vmin as characters in this ongoing narrative in their songs it would look something like this:

Taehyung's perspective: It's difficult and he wonders what the future holds. He's unsure and doesn't know if he can pull Jimin closer even if he wants to and even if Jimin seems to feel the same it seems like a double edged sword. Being hidden or them not being able to be together as more than friends is something he struggles with. He wants to express himself and he tries through his songs. But even if they have each other now and he seems to gradually get more used to the "Night/Winter" over time, it is a constant struggle. He wishes that he was stronger, but Jmin being there with him helps him.

Jimin's perspective: We don't have as many songs from Jimin, so perhaps he doesn’t have as much of a need to express himself outwards in general. He is better at being ok with what they have, or at least at seeming like it. 'I say that it's all okay. But maybe that's not what I truly think.'. He can "sleep" early on and he smiles even though the smiles aren't always happy, and in contrast Taehyung can't. Basically what Jimin is doing is being better at hiding it. But Jimin also wants Taehyung to be his own light and night. In it all he also promises to stay and that Taehyung is his and expresses how he wants to be together when BTS is over.

I guess you could say that winter has been a hibernation period for their relationship. In particular for Jimin. But now they can both enjoy even this period because unlike earlier they are waiting together, they have reached each other, they can hold hands and give each other warmth when they need it. They know where they stand and have mostly reconciled with the thought of waiting to be together properly. Even if it's always going to be difficult.

I might be taking some of the lyrics a bit too literally. Either way it seems both of them are more ok with the current situation compared to before. To me if there is a Vmin perspective here it seems to slowly change with time in how they express it but that the want and wish to be together has always been there. It also seems possible that finally after all this time and uncertainty some things have become easier, and that there might even be change towards something even better in the future.

I’ve been working on this theory for a long time. Like I said, the original plan was to post on February 13th for the anniversary. But it was a lot bigger and took more time than expected. I also didn’t expect Taehyung to give me new reasons to raise my eyebrows. One being this new song 'Sleep' with it’s lyrics, and the other being the cherry blossoms he posted about. I am very curious to see what we might get for KTH1 when it comes out.

Spring is coming.

(Ok sorry for the joke but I am actually scared if Spring would be coming in regards to Taehyung's song narrative. Way more scary than Winter coming if you ask me.)
