#azula did not torture suki
Note
What makes you think Azula was lying about hurting Suki? She took her clothes and somehow knew Sokka was her boyfriend and already traumatized about losing his first love
I mean, the episode itself basically screamed "AZULA IS LYING! SHE'S A LYING LIAR WHO LIES!" during that scene was a pretty good hint. She was fighting the Gaang to prevent them from going to finding her father before firebending came back, "warned" them about a trap waiting for them where Ozai was (which we know was bullshit), and only then does she suddenly go "By the way I have your girlfriend as my prisoner and she thinks you failed her!" to hurt Sokka - aka the one who was telling Aang and Toph to just ignore everything she said.
We literally see a few episodes later, and sure, she's in prison, but she's clearly not hurt. And more importantly, during their escape, when Suki says this is a rematch she had been waiting for, she is focused on TY LEE and on not letting her hit her once - which could suggest Ty Lee was the one to take down all the Kyoshi Warriors, with Chi blocking, like she did with the Terra Team in Ba Sing Se.
If Azula had done anything beyond just capturing and maybe taunting her over the defeat, don't you think Suki would have wanted to at least punch her in the face or something? Hell, she's more mad at Zuko than at Azula, since he burned her village.
Not to mention, Sokka taunted her in Ember Island Players over losing to Azula, and Suki just looks bothered by the mention of the defeat, not like she's reliving some terrible trauma. The writers could be insentitive at times, but I think even they wouldn't do something like "This character was tortured/raped in prison and her boyfriend makes fun of her for it."
As for Azula knowing Sokka and Suki were a thing, he LITERALLY told Ty Lee about it at the end of season 2, when she's trying to flirt with him. Plus I can totally see Suki going "My boyfriend is friends with the Avatar, and they'll kick your ass and save me" after her defeat.
(Seriously guys, "Dude that is friends with the Avatar and openly supports him is dating the leader of a group of warriors that also supports the Avatar openly" is not exactly top secret information that Azula would need to torture people to find out about).
Also I don't think she show is implying she knows about Yue and how much it affected Sokka. There's a literal war going on for longer than Azula has been alive, Sokka's home was one of the areas the Fire Nation attacked the most, and he has been traveling the world for months, meeting a ton of new people - it's practically mathematically garanteed that he lost someone at some point. Plus "I captured someone you care about and they lost all hope" is the kind of shit that would upset ANYONE, even if they never lost someone before that.
As for the whole "Azula stole her clothes" thing: The Northern Water Tribe stole clothes and armor of Fire Nation soldiers and the Gaang did the same thing in book 3, and Zuko was also made to wear inmate uniform like Suki. "This character had to take this off at some point" does not mean "They were abused while changing clothes."
For fucks sake people, we see Hakoda humiliate the warden and only be sent to his sell, we see guards mocking Sokka for wanting to beat up a prisoner (who just happened to be the traitor prince) as they see that as "new guy trying too hard" aka that's not something that usually happens in the boiling rock, and even the cooler is a punishment for picking up a fight not a place to throw prisoners in randomly. The ONE torture session we see in the boiling rock happens because an escape plan was discovered - and AZULA was the one to stop it, before she even knew what the hell was going on.
("But she visited Suki in the comics and it was implied that Suki was being starved!" Retcons don't fucking matter, we literally see in the show that Suki was fine, just sad to be imprisoned and away from everyone she knew. She was not tortured.)
Azula is no saint, but this "theory" that she tortured or raped Suki is nothing but fans being oddly fixated on the idea of this kids show secretly being Game Of Thrones.

Are they really your friends if they haven’t threatened your partner? Yes they are, but where’s the fun in that.
This is the Gaang threatening Azula for “Katara’s sake”.
— Sokka
Sokka: Katara out!
Katara, raising an eyebrow: Excuse me?
Sokka: Can you please get out so I can speak with Azula?
Katara: Whatever you want to say to her I’m sure I can be in here.
Sokka: No. And don’t ask.
Katara:
Sokka: Pretty please?
Azula: I’m honestly intrigued.
Katara: Ugh. Fine.
Sokka: Thanks sister. Luv ya.
*Katara out of the picture*
Sokka: Listen up snooty princess. *Put his boomerang on the table*. I’m here to talk about how I will punish you if you hurt my sister in any kind of way.
Azula: Sure, I’m all ears.
Sokka: Wait what?
Azula: But I must advise you I experienced a lot of forms of torture already. Father used to say “It’s war Azula, they will do this to you if you’re weak and they catch you. It’s for you own good”
Azula: So what do you have in mind? Father favored the traditional practices of the Earth Nation.
Sokka: I- Damn. Spirits.
Azula: Look I never would hurt your sister on purpose. Ever. You have my word and honor.
Sokka: I’m going to hug you. So be ready. Here I go.
Azula: This is certainly a technique that my father didn’t use.
Sokka: NOW.
— Suki
Suki: Let’s talk.
Azula: Last time I checked you weren’t my friend in the kyoshi warriors. Did something happen to Ty lee?
Suki: I want to talk to you as Katara’s friend.
Azula: Ugh.
Suki: Listen asshole If you consider for a fraction of sec-
Azula: I am not going to hurt her on purpose. I’m a bitch. I know. I’m mean. Believe I know. But-
Azula: Wait why am I explaining anything to you?
Suki: Because I’m going to kill you if you don’t treat her as she deserves?
Azula: She’d do it first, don’t you think?
Suki: ..Well yeah, but it’s mandatory. They give Sokka the warning talk when we started dating.
Azula: They give it to Sokka and not you?
Suki: In Katara’s words “You could do way better than him so we’re going to remind him that”
— Toph
Toph: Princess purple platypus.
Azula: Living creature who doesn’t know what a bath is.
Toph: I’m here to give you a talk captain firebitch.
Azula: About how you are going to murder me if I lost my mind again and hurt my girlfriend on purpose?
Toph: Yeah I guess.
Azula: Message received.
Toph: Good. Another thing.
Azula: What?
Toph: Is it true that you know several torture techniques from the Earth Kingdom?
Azula: *sighs* He cannot shut up. Yes.
Toph: Good so start to talk princess snooty-pants. I want details.
— Zuko
Azula: Is your turn in that madness that they’re doing?
Zuko: Has everyone talked to you?
Azula: I think the avatar didn’t but I’m not sure. But I don’t think he knows how to threat someone.
Zuko: Who knows. So can you help me to figure out how to distribute all of the income from-
Azula: Thank Agni. No talk from you?
Zuko: Of course not. If you hurt her she will beat the shit out of you. Well, maybe you will have an awesome battle like I would pick popcorn and watch. So no, I’ve started learning when I don’t need to talk.
Azula: Oh I wasn’t expecting that. Good job Zuzu.
Zuko: So can you help me?
Azula: Gladly.
— Aang
Aang: Hey Azula. Mind if I sit here?
Azula: Do as you please Avatar.
Aang: Oh thanks.
Aang: By the way I came here to say you something.
Azula: So I was right you were the one left-
Aang: Listen Azula I’m only going to say this once. *Avatar State on* Hurt Katara in any kind of way and I will forget everything I know about peace. I’ll bring Kyoshi and let her do whatever she wants. Your past will look like a fairy tale compared to what will happen to you. Understood?
Azula, pale as a piece of paper: Sure.
Aang: It was nice to see you. Let’s grab some tea someday. Bye!
Azula:
Azula: Who would have thought that the air monk which I already kill once would be the most sadistic. My respects Avatar.
— Katara
Katara: I assume they give you the talk, right?
Azula: You have assumed correctly.
Katara: Poor thing.
Azula: I know you don’t feel bad for me, quit the show.
Katara: Don’t be such a baby. Now I need to know, who was the weakest?
Azula: Your brother by far. He spent more time trying to hug me than threatening me.
Katara: No surprised. Who was the “scariest”?
Azula: The Avatar. But don’t you dare to tell a soul.
Katara: Aang? The pacifist monk? Aang who cries if he eats a piece of meat?
Azula: Yes sweetie, that one.
Katara: *barely holding her laughter*
Azula: One more laugh and I’m done with you.
Katara: No you don’t.
Azula: I hate you.
Katara: I hate you too babe.
Toph, from afar: WHIPPED.
— Ty lee & Mai
Azula: Did you give Katara the talk
Ty lee: What talk?
Mai: I don’t think we need to tell her where the babies come from.
Azula: The one of If Katara hurt me you will hurt her etc.
Mai: No?
Ty lee: Why would we ever do that? We like Katara. She’s way nicer than you.
Mai: Being honest she could do better than you.
Azula: And I’m betrayed once aga-
Azula: Oh no. I’m the Sokka. Somebody kill me.
Mai: I think she lost it. Again.
Ty lee: Suki could also do better than Sokka.
Azula: I’m a sinner in the eyes of the fire nation. SOMEBODY KILL ME.
Ty lee: NO YOU ARE NOT ANYMORE NOW IT’S LEGAL.
Mai: Ugh. She’s so dramatic.

O Great and Mighty Author! Would I be able to write a fic inspired by yours? Inspired by the first book, and the first dozen chapters of War Games?
Similarities: Zuko and Sokka get captured and tortured together. Zhao is a creep and a horrible person. Suki & Sokka & Zuko. (There might be a few more that I'm not remembering, but if anything is similar I'll credit it to you.)
Differences: Zuko never hunted the Avatar for the Fire Nation. Zuko was never the crowned prince. Zuko was Ozai's bastard child (technically. Maybe--still figuring that out). There is, actually, an entire organization of The Blue Spirit, in which Zuko is a member, and does not work alone. No Azula redemption.
And, the biggest difference of all which started this idea in my mind: What if Zuko actually did kill the crowned prince, as the soldiers had assumed? What if there actually was more than one person under the mask?
Anything that would be too similar to your story, I wouldn't even add in, I would just gloss over it, perhaps mention it.
It would be a little while before it even comes out, since I want to plot it out first if im able to do it, and then hopefully have it fully written before posting.
Thank you for your time!
Hello, Yes of course, please go ahead! Your idea sounds awesome, and like it will be a lot of fun! Thank you for asking, I will look forward to seeing what you come up with! ❤️

The Long Way Back
No one owes Azula anything.
Go with me here. I don't hate Azula. I think she's a wonderfully complicated and genuinely frightening villain. But I do still think she's a villain.
Azula did a lot of harm, and while the fact that she was very probably abused is an explanation for why she is the way she is, it's not an excuse, and it doesn't mean she doesn't enjoy it. She very nearly succeeded in killing Iroh, and Aang only survived because of Katara's intervention (I won't go into my belief that she's killed before that...but yeah, she absolutely has). Azula's on-screen kill count only remains at 0 because of plot convenience (and the fact that it's a kids' show). That's not even getting into all the ways she was terrible to Zuko and added psychological abuse to what he was already getting from Ozai. She's never remorseful about any of it.
That lack of remorse is what confuses me most about apologists who think that Azula deserves not only to be forgiven but to be reconciled with her family and friends (and the friends of her family). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Zuko and even Iroh would forgive Azula, it wouldn't necessarily mean that either of them would want to reconcile with her. Forgiveness and reconciliation aren't the same thing. Forgiveness can be part of one's personal journey of healing, but it doesn't mean that one will seek reconciliation with the person who wronged them. For the sake of their own mental health and well-being, a person may choose to forgive abusive family members, but still ultimately be no contact with them. That's not contradictory. Sometimes letting go of the past means leaving people there.
On the other side of that, it's completely understandable that after being pushed and harmed and tortured, someone may decide not to forgive the person who caused the harm. This idea that any of the Gaang, but specifically Katara should have to forgive Azula is frankly ridiculous. Yes, Katara forgave Zuko, but don't forget, Zuko had to work for that forgiveness. He wanted that forgiveness. The context of Katara and Zuko's reconciliation is very specific to them. It does not mean that Katara is going to extend the same forgiveness and reconciliation to everyone. Katara is forgiving, yes, but only to a point. She has her limits. I have yet to see anyone present a compelling reason for Katara to not only forgive Azula, but to want to have any sort of relationship with her. I have yet to see any compelling reason that Azula would care to have Katara's forgiveness. Katara's relationship with Zuko isn't enough on its own. I could see somewhere down the line them being cordial to each other for Zuko's sake (assuming Azula isn't exiled forever because of what she did), but that's it.
If Zuko forgave Azula and reconciled with her, he wouldn't force Katara to do the same. He would be very understanding of Katara keeping her distance from Azula, even keeping her children away, because, at the end of the day, Azula isn't owed a relationship with anyone. She isn't owed reconciliation with anyone. Further, she hasn't earned reconciliation or a relationship with anyone. You can absolutely headcanon that she has. You can headcanon that Aang got past her killing him, or that Sokka and Suki got past her (implied) torture of Suki. That's totally fine. But personally, I prefer not to, and I think Azula is more interesting for it.

So I watched the Netflix ATLA and my verdict is. It was a garbage fire for the first 5 episodes but the last 3 were incredible.
If you can survive the torture of the first 5 episodes, of which the 4th is probably the worst. It's definetly worth it.
No explicit spoilers but details below the cut.
That said, they did Katara so dirty. So, so dirty.
For some reason Sokka keeps getting framed as the protagonist? It really makes the story feel even more discombobulated.
Zhao is not Zhao. Ends up still being a pretty good villain though.
The pacing is nightmarish with transitions that are just jarring. And they jammed like four different episodes into Omashu that did not work together at all. (Jet is in Omashu its so weird)
The sets are beautiful. The costumes are beautiful. The actors are giving it their all (unfortunately Katara and Aangs actors just aren't strong enough to carry the roles. They are trying you can see how hard their trying but they're just not there.)
They kept the og score.
Azula and Ozai being here is great. Though it does contribute strongly to the bad pacing.
A lot of scenes also feel like their happening in the wrong order.
Also unpopular opinion but Kyoshi should not have been in the story.
They did Suki so dirty.
They could've kept the sexism arc for Sokka. There was space for it and it would've made the North Pole hit better. Plus his conversations with Katara would make more sense.
I do think the primary issue was that they didn't have enough time and space to let the story breathe or the characters develop. Zhao feels like the only one with an actual arc in the story.
That and there's this whole undertone of like 21st century misogyny from people who think we've solved sexism.
Oh also like they changed the rules of the spirit world. They never say the word "chi" once and they just call it the moon and ocean spirits not Tui and La weird ass choice.

‘The Boiling Rock, Part 1’
I love how the start of the episode shows that Zuko is still getting teased by the rest of the Gaang, but it's kind of becoming less vicious, even from Katara.
I understand that Sokka feels terrible about the invasion plan failing and his father and many others all ended up captured. That's a lot of guilt to carry around. So, it's time to reverse the consequences of one bad plan by trying to execute an even worse plan!
So where do I even start with this before I take away Sokka's master strategist badge? Let's start from the top. Going to the Boiling Rock alone and taking Appa. That's just reckless and irresponsible. Also, the going alone because 'I must reclaim my honor'? Ugh, this masculine obsession with honor that makes one suspend nearly all functions of the brain... Sokka, weren't you the smart one? Katara isn't missing her father? How does she not deserve to be involved? You don't want to endanger anyone else? Fine, but... don't you realize that the group can't afford to lose you or Appa?
Okay, while I don't approve of them taking Appa, Zuko's reasoning not to do so is bizarre. Prisons don't have bison daycare centers? Umm, none of the places the Gaang go have those. Also, arriving in a hot air balloon is... not exactly inconspicuous? Do you think there's a landing pad for visitors, and nobody's going to ask any questions when they clearly spot your approach? Yeah, I don't see the air balloon being a better choice here.
This episode does give us some epic Zuko quotes, though. 'I'm never happy' and 'That's rough buddy' are classics for a reason. But for saying that the only one he misses in the Fire Nation is Mai, Zuko gets 20 Bad Brother Points, I mean Jerk Points.
Of course, the balloon crashes and robs them of means of escape. Appa wouldn't have had this problem getting in and out through those steam clouds. Also, Sokka saying that he expected this to be a one way trip... what the hell? Did you also think that when you were about to take Appa? Okay, Sokka is not allowed to ever contribute to the group's plans again, this is... awful.
Okay, I understand the reputation of the Boiling Rock, and sure the coolers seem super unpleasant for the firebenders, but... it doesn't really look any better or worse than any other prison. Sorry, but the 'everyone on Boiling Rock is tortured, ergo Azula tortured Suki' "logic" is simply ridiculous.
It's nice to see Suki again, but I'm still salty that a main character's romantic interest makes only her third appearance in 54 episodes. Like come the fuck on.
I'm actually going to give Sokka 30 Jerk Points for trying to kiss Suki while in the guard uniform. Like dude, don't you realize how that might be terrifying for a female prisoner? Maybe it's something Suki has already had to deal with. I know it was meant to be funny, but to me it was just thoughtless.
Zuko asking the Warden 'how did you know who I am?' I'm dying. Also, Zuko with the most half-assed apology in the world to Suki. Sorry for your island, I guess. ;)
Okay, again... I love Sokka's idea of using the cooler to get across the lake of steam. Buuut... what are you going to do once you're across? Row the cooler all the way back to the Air Temple? Also, the lake is in the caldera of a volcano and those walls look impossible to climb, so... again, Sokka has the engineering part solved. Everything else, not so much.
That's it for now, I'll see you soon in Part 2, hopefully with a better escape plan.
Jerk Points for Book 3:
Zuko - 660 Aang – 280  Ozai - 250 Sokka - 110 Roku - 100 Hide - 80 King Kuei - 60 Toph - 50 Haru - 30

Hi sreedy! I finished your little happy chappy yesterday, and I have opinions that want to be expressed.
Firstly, a polite message from past me, yesterday night, who just finished the chapter:
BA SING FUCKING SE?????? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! UNBELIEVABLE! OUTRAGEOUS! INSANE! THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE! YOU ARE GONNA DRUG HIM AGAIN? "wHaT wOuLd mAkE hIm bEg" bitch don't you even try. I will feed your kneecaps to my fucking dog in front of you. Glad to hear they're all gonNA BE IN THE SAME FUCKING CITY THOUGH! SOME REAL COMFORT THERE! AND CAN JET JUST PISS OFF FOR ONE GOD DAMN MINUTE!? I hope the guilt eats him from inside out.
Now let's continue with a... less emotional message from future me, who has slept a night over it and calmed down a little:
Okay, hi again, sorry for past me's yelling but in their defense you did kind of deserve it. The pillow was not okay.
I don't like this Jet much and every time I remember he wrote that letter anger fills me and I just want to yell at him, take a deep breath, pinch my nose and sit him down amd give him a very sarcastic lecture. (I heavily support any more dirt on this guy and that comment about the Kyoshi face paint making his eyebrows pop is definetly my Highlight of the week)
Ba Sing Se? Seriously Sreedy, I don't know whether I love or hate that. Like: fuck yes! It's excruciating! But also: fuck no! it's excruciating! Good chances that Azula finds him first though.
I am still very mad that they have liquid bending suppressants now because that means Zuko will be afraid of needles and we don't know what this thing does yet.
Jet is such a little bitch I hate it but I love him. You really do all the characters so well I could talk about this for days.
Suki? SUKII!!! I love her but hun, you can't fix him. I admire your confidence, but there is a lot more going on with him than you think. *Insert that one Nick Nelson scene on the beach with his Mom*
Anyways, Glad to hear that Quon is not as bad as Zhao was. He just thinks Zuko is challenging and interesting instead of feeling like jerking off after being done with him. Quon emotionally distances himself from his prisoner, I like that in a man /j. No but seriously, I'm very glad Quon doesn't hurt him entirely for his personal satisfaction.
Maybe I'll slide into your askbox and drop a few more opinions in the next weeks (probably), but until then:
Ly, still no kneecaps for you, take care of yourself and hydrate, take as many breaks as you need and please for the love of god do not kill Shen.
*Quon & I both rocking no kneecaps and feeling better than ever*
Haha… Jet is officially the main character of LIAB because I think more people comment about him than any other character. & his eyebrows are always popping. ;)
Didn’t you hear the news? Ba sing se is where the party’s at. Everyone’s invited.
I don’t know if Suki wants to fix Sokka, which is nice, I think she just wants to support him and make sure he is alright. But Sokka is being sketch right now so good luck girl…
I think Quon would rather just execute Zuko and be done with it but he has to play the game. Luckily the game isn’t with Zuko he is merely a pawn, so Quon won’t be emotionally invested in any sick torture or anything because he doesn’t really care haha.
I hope to see you in my askbox at least I know I can hunt you down on discord to get my kneecaps back eventually.

“Where is he?” Sokka shouts, dodging a flare.
“Are you sure you want him anymore, Water Tribe?” Azula sneers, and Sokka feels his face go numb.
“Azula,” he says slowly. “What did you do?”

Febuwhump Day 7 - Made to watch
You can also read this on ao3 and find the rest of my febuwhump fics here
tw:  physical torture, emotional torture and manipulation, mention of past child abuse
Fandom: Avatar the last airbender
Words: 2242
Zuko should have known Azula would show up and ruin everything. He should have anticipated it. It's what she always does. But he hadn't even thought about it, and now she has them captured, still within the prison walls. At her mercy. And Agni knows Azula does not have mercy.
--
Azula arrives before they ever get the chance of reaching the gondola. Zuko should have known it would happen. In true Ozai fashion, his sister has always had a knack for ruining things for him.
It could have been a match, maybe. Azula, Mai, and Tai Lee, against the five of them. On a good day, they could have won. But Suki is busy with the Warden, and Zuko is still weakened by the lingering effects of the freezer. Azula and her friends are, as always, on top form. It is laughable, how quickly they beat all five of them, even once Suki lets go of the Warden, and joins the fight.
Azula’s hands burn his wrists as she handcuffs them. He grits his teeth at the familiar pain, willing himself to keep his head high. She pushes him ahead of her, back into the prison building, until they reach a wide, windowless room. Zuko’s knees crack on the hard floor when Azula forces him down in the center of the room. Upon her orders, his four escape companions, Sokka, Suki, Hakoda, and Chit Sang, are brought into the room and made to kneel by the right wall. The door closes behind the guards, leaving only the six of them in the room.
Zuko doesn’t like how isolated from the others he is. Doesn’t like that he’s kneeling and Azula is towering above him, lips curled into a wicked smile, palm ablaze with blue fire. It reminds him of a far too similar scene three and a half years ago. His scar burns with memories, and his lungs constrict with remembered fear.
“You didn’t actually think you would manage to escape the most secure prison in the world, Zuzu, did you?” asks Azula, her voice saccharine. She reaches out for his face, and Zuko recoils back so hard he nearly loses his balance and falls onto his back. He can feel his father’s hand cupping his face. Phantom fire sears through his skin.
Amusement dances in Azula’s eyes. “Answer me,” she orders.
“It would have worked,” says Zuko. And he knows it is true. It would have worked if only Azula hadn’t been there. There are two constants in Zuko’s life. One, no matter what he does, he will get hurt. Two, no matter what he does, Azula is better than him. Once again, those two constants are proving themselves true.
“You forget you have always been a failure, Zuzu,” counters Azula. “You were there with them, of course it was doomed to fail.”
Zuko clenches his fists, digs his nails into his palms. This is what Azula does. She finds what he is vulnerable about and uses it to pick him apart. It isn’t personal. She does it with everyone; it is her way of protecting herself. It does not mean she hates him.
(There are three things Zuko can’t manage to convince himself of, three statements he has doubted ever since he was banished. One, that it was cruel and it was wrong. Two, that he is loved. Three, that Azula doesn’t hate him.)
“And failure, just like disobedience, demands punishment,” continues Azula. She leans in until her lips are next to his ears. He wills himself not to flinch away. “Leaving was your mistake, dear brother.” She spits the word ‘brother’ the way she would an insult. “And what do we do with mistakes? We punish them.” She straightens up, and for a moment, Zuko can see right through the cracks in her mask. He sees the fourteen-year-old girl she is, the girl who was abandoned by her mother and brother, the girl who believes herself to be a monster. The girl who struggles to survive and thrive under the rule of a true monster.
He does not regret leaving. He regrets leaving her behind.
“But I am feeling merciful,” adds Azula, which is probably the most ridiculous lie she has ever told, and Azula always lies. She does not know how to be merciful for she was never taught how to be. “Thus, I will let you choose who will bear the punishment, Zuzu. You can choose one of your companions.” Her mouth twists with disgust at the word ‘companions’. “Or you can bear it yourself.”
Zuko closes his eyes. He can feel everyone’s eyes on him. It is not a hard decision to make. What is harder, is knowing he will once again be subjected to pain at the hand of a loved one. Of family.
“Me,” he says and looks Azula straight in the eyes. She knew his answer already, but delight shines in her eyes nonetheless. His companions protest loudly but he shakes his head, not daring to meet their eyes. “Better me than you,” he tells them. His words do nothing to quiet their protests.
“Let me take it, kid,” he hears Hakoda say. “I’m an adult.” But so is Zuko. He hasn’t been a kid in a long, long time. And he will not let anyone else pay for a mistake that is his only.
“Do it,” he tells his sister.
Azula does not move. She cocks her head and stares at him.
“No,” she says eventually. “I have changed my mind.” Zuko’s blood runs cold. Of course, she has. It was a trap, wasn’t it? Everything is always a trap in this family.
Azula turns to his four companions lined up against the wall. “I don’t think it will be much fun to torture you,” she continues. “You do not care for physical pain. Did it make you feel good to sacrifice yourself? Did it give you the idea that you had atoned for your crimes?” She takes a step forward and grabs Sokka by the hair.
“No!” yells Zuko, but Azula ignores him and drags Sokka to the center of the room, so he faces Zuko. Sokka’s fear is bravely masked, but Zuko can see all of it anyway. It mirrors his own perfectly.
Azula’s eyes bore into her brother. “Don’t you know that you cannot escape your past? You will always be Fire Nation. You think these peasants will love you if you pretend to help them? You think you will fool them with your pathetic act?” Zuko shakes his head, but his mask is slipping.
It is what Azula does, he tells himself. It isn’t personal. Except it sounds very, very personal. He hurt her when he left. And now she is hurting him back. She wants to destroy him, to make him pay for daring to leave her with their monster of a father. Or perhaps she feels threatened by him, perhaps she cannot bear the idea of being confronted with what she has done and does not want to atone for.
“Please,” he tells her. “Torture me. Not him. Not any of them. You said it yourself; it was my mistake. Punish me all you want. Kill me, even, if that is what you deem an appropriate punishment. But don’t touch them.”
Cold fury deforms Azula’s face. “Is this what you are willing to endure for them? You wouldn’t stay for me, but you are willing to die so they don’t suffer?” Her laugh is glacial, an attempt at masking her pain. “You are more of a traitor than I thought, Zuzu. You don’t deserve to die thinking you did a good thing. You deserve to watch them suffer and curse you for every mistake you have ever made. Because it is those mistakes that led you all to this point. It is your fault, and what is a better punishment than to let others take the pain for you?”
Zuko throws himself at Azula, but she effortlessly sends him crashing farther into the room, away from Sokka and her, away from Hakoda, Suki, and Chit Sang. Azula faces them all. “Try something like that again, and the Water Tribe boy dies. Slowly and painfully.”
Sokka meets Zuko’s eyes and offers him a small, trembling smile. Hot tears burn Zuko’s good eye. He does not deserve the friendship of someone as kind as Sokka.
“Tell me, Zuzu,” says Azula, “what would you be willing to do to save this one?”
“Anything,” he answers in a breath. His heart pounds violently against his ribcage.
Azula’s smile turns calculating. “Even come back home?”
Zuko’s breath catches in his throat. Come back home. Except it isn’t home. It is the place of all the abuse he has suffered, it is a place promising more abuse. Ozai won’t grant him the sweet mercy of a quick and painless death. He will drag it out for months, maybe even years. He will make sure Zuko understands how worthless he is, he will make sure Zuko regrets ever being born before killing him.
“Yes,” he answers.
Azula laughs. “Too bad you already left, then, Zuzu. What is done cannot be undone.” In a second, her movements so fast Zuko can barely track them, Azula sends Sokka sprawling on his back and slams her foot on his outstretched leg. The sinister crack of bone breaking is drowned out by Sokka’s sudden, strangled cry of pain. Opposite to Zuko, Hakoda struggles against his restraints, his face tight with anger. One warning glare from Azula is enough to calm him down, but his eyes are still alight with fury.
“What use will you be,” Azula asks Sokka, “if you cannot fight? You are a warrior, aren’t you? Should I break the other ankle to make sure you can never take part in a battle?”
Tears stream down Sokka’s face as he clenches his teeth against the pain. Zuko can see the doubt and grief waging a war against his hard-won confidence. He wants to shout at him that Azula lies, that it is all she ever does. That he is useful even if he cannot fight, that it does not matter if he is useful at all because people will still love him.
It goes on for what feels like hours. Azula plays with Sokka’s broken ankle for some time before grabbing his hand and slowly, meticulously burning each of his fingertips. Sokka’s ragged screams of pain eventually die down to choked-out sobs. Tears leak from both Hakoda’s and Suki’s eyes. Zuko has not stopped crying since Azula started.
Azula plays with Sokka’s mind, too, as she tortures him. Brings out all his insecurities, all his feelings of worthlessness, and exacerbates them. And Sokka listens and believes her, rendered pliant by pain.
The door of the room opens, eventually, slowly and silently. If Azula notices, she does not acknowledge it. Mai and Ty Lee enter the room, weapons drawn out. Zuko meets Mai’s gaze for a split-second, before one of her knives flies out from her hand, catching Azula in the arm. Ty Lee lunges at her friend at the same moment, wasting no time in pressing onto the chi points she knows so well.
“What are you doing?” Azula screams before she goes down, and Zuko’s trained ear catches the raw pain of the betrayal in her voice. Ty Lee’s cheer has been replaced by grief.
“I’m sorry, Azula,” the girl whispers. “But this isn’t okay.”
Ty Lee and Mai make quick work of uncuffing them. Hakoda runs to his son’s side as soon as his hands are free, hushed reassurances falling from his lips.
“Thank you,” Zuko says as Mai frees him from the cuffs. “You should leave, too.”
Mai shakes her head. “We’ll hold her back. Try to talk some sense into her.”
Zuko snorts wetly. “Good luck with that.” He turns and glances at Sokka, huddled in his father’s arms. Guilt devours his stomach.
Later, on the balloon they have stolen from Azula, Hakoda comes to Zuko as he is maintaining the fire.
“He’ll be okay,” says Hakoda when he sits down. “Katara will be able to heal him, and we’ll all be there to help him recover.”
“That’s good,” replies Zuko awkwardly. He barely dares to glance at Hakoda. Why is the man here? If he wants to punish him, it would be smarter for all their sakes to wait until Zuko is no longer the one ensuring the balloon stays up in the air.
“It wasn’t your fault,” says Hakoda gently. It feels like a trap. “You couldn’t have prevented that.”
Zuko laughs bitterly. Tears sting in his eyes. He didn’t think he’d still have enough water in him to cry after the waterfall he shed in that cursed room. “Azula was right, though. If I’d just stayed in the palace…”
“Then we’d have one less ally, and today’s outcome would have been worse. I would have been captured anyway, and Sokka would have come to get me out. He survived because you were there.”
Zuko curls in on himself. “I abandoned her. It’s why she was so angry today.”
Hakoda tentatively pulls him into his side. Zuko doesn’t resist, despite the primal fear nestled in his stomach. “Sometimes we have to make hard choices,” says the older man. “You did what you thought was best. It doesn’t mean your choice doesn’t come with consequences or that the situation is perfect. It means you did what you thought was right. For yourself and for others. And I think that shows you are a good person, no matter what your sister said.”
The dam gives way to the tears again. This time, someone is there to support him as he breaks.

considering zuts think mai raped zuko im not suprised they consider azula doing that to suki, why they think that a kid show would imply that is beyond me but they are the same people calling aang a rapist too.. its so weird how character i dont like =rapist .. thats not how that works it just makes em look crazy when they do this atla is a kid show aang was never gonna kill Ozai and no one is a rapist.. they gotta get their heads out of the gutter
Oh, I WISH zutarians were the only ones that are fully convinced Azula is a rapist. I hear that one ALL THE TIME from lots of corners of the fandom - mainly whenever someone brings up the possibility of Azula one day being redeemed, or so much as says "I feel sorry for her."

Has Azula ever killed anyone besides Aang? Also her 'war crimes' in her villains wiki are so far-fetched and ridiculous
No, she has not. And since we're talking about her "crimes."
Murder - Iroh was a general for decades, no way he didn't kill anyone this whole time. Ursa killed Azulon. Zuko sent an assassin after Aang.
Attempted mass murder - Again, Iroh tried to take over Ba Sing Se, and Zuko threatened to kill everyone left in the Southern Water Tribe.
Fraud - Mai and Ty Lee also commited identity fraud, so did Zuko and Iroh, and even the Gaang when they were undercover on the Fire Nation.
Kidnapping - Zuko's goal for the longest time was kidnapping Aang, and he did try it MANY times.
Theft - Katara stole that waterbending scroll, Zuko and Iroh robbed Song's ostrige-horse, Zuko robbed a bunch of people after The Swamp, and "The Runnaway" was basically the Gaang scheming and eventually robbing people for an entire episode.
Terrorism - Zuko burned Suki's village, Aang and Katara blew up a factory, and the Gaang's actions in Ba Sing Se would probably fall under terrorism under that city's legal system.
Torture - Azula is literally never shown torturing anybody. We saw her stopping a torture session for fuck's sake.
Animal cruelty - She threw bread at turtleducks, and so did Zuko - who didn't see anything wrong with it until Ursa was horrified. Why is it only wrong and unacceptable even for a child when SHE does it?
Attempted fratricide - Zuko tried to kill Azula too. They were opposing sides of a war, people. It's fair when one of them does it, it's also fair when the other does it too.
Abuse of power - That one is correct. Random question: remember in The Swamp when Zuko said "These people should just give stuff to us? Doesn't that just scream "Kind, just prince"?
Treason - Azula never betrayed her nation or her ruler, and the coup in Ba Sing Se involved Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee. Ursa helped Ozai murder Azulon and then forged his will so Ozai could rise to power. Also, Zuko, Iroh, Mai, Ty Lee, Jeong-Jeong and Piandao all commited treason by changing sides- the Fire Nation laws are unjust, but they're still laws. Treason isn't always bad.
Aiding and abetting - Iroh, Ursa, Zuko, Mai, Ty Lee, Aang, Sokka, Toph, and Katara are all guilty of this as well since they've all helped other people commit and/or hide their crimes.
Unlawful imprisonment - Again, Zuko's whole thing for a long time was taking Aang prisoner, so why is Azula the devil for imprisoning the Kyoshi Warriors and Iroh (the later being someone Zuko also helped imprison)? As for Mai and Ty Lee, remember: just because it happened to the characters we liked, doesn't mean it was unlawful. They broke Fire Nation law, and Azula had them arrested. Plain and simple.
Psychological abuse - She did cross that line a few times, I'll give the Azula haters that. Oh, random question: remember when Zuko would yell at Iroh for the smallest of things, betrayed him, had him imprisoned, and then said "You're crazy! And if you weren't in prison, you'd be sleeping in a gutter!" when Iroh refused to help him while Zuko's knife was still firmly on his back? Also, remember Iroh being totally okay with Zuko acting completely unlike himself because it gave him the son he always wanted? Also remember Ozai emotionally abusing BOTH of his kids for years, not just good boy Zuzu, but also the "evil" Azula?
Crimes against humanity - Yall remember Zuko supporting the Fire Nation just as much as she did, thretened to kill everyone left at the South Pole, burned Suki's village, and sent an assassin after the sole survivor of a genocide, right? And that Iroh sieged Ba Sing Se for 600 days, and that was just ONE of his missions during his time as a general? And that Mai and Ty Lee helped her with the coup at Ba Sing Se? That was all kind of a big deal?
Vandalism - Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee did it too, and were just as pleased with themselves as she was. Toph destroyed a wall of their home in Ba Sing Se just for the lols. Aang and Katara blew up a factory.
Corruption - ??????????????????? QUE? I'm assuming this is refering to the whole Ba Sing Se thing, and once again, Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee are just as guilty of this.
Endangerment - It's a war, that's kind of important. Also, Hakoda and all the parents involved in the attempted invasion of the Fire Nation would fit the definition too even though they didn't really have a choice, and Iroh sent his 16-year-old nephew to a battle to the death with his 14-year-old sister - which reminds me: AZULA IS A CHILD SOLDIER! Ozai (and Iroh) endangered her (and Zuko). There isn't a single adult in the show that doesn't fall into this category at some point for fuck's sake!
Usurpation - Again, Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee helped with Ba Sing Se, Mai's father was rulling Omashu without having any right to do so, and even Ursa is guilty of that by helping Ozai kill Azulon and forge his will.
BONUS - Things that were not on that list, but that I've heard other people in the fandom saying are part of her list of "crimes":
False surrender - Aang pretend to surrender to Zuko in the second episode and then proceeded to wreck his shit.
Disguising herself as the enemy and not taking off the enemies' uniform during battle - That was part of the plan of the Northern Water Tribe in book 1's finale, and the Gaang also did this in the beginning of book 3.
Using child soldiers in battle - Again, SHE'S A CHILD SOLDIER TOO! Are Aang, Sokka and Katara criminals for fighting alongside Suki, Toph and Zuko? Were Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee criminals for fighting alongside Azula? Are all the adults in Kyoshi Island criminals since all the Kyoshi Warriors are teenagers? When exactly did Iroh have Lu Ten first join him in battles? Oh, wait, we don't need to know that one since, again, he sent a 16-year-old to kill a 14-year-old, so he's already guilty anyway.
WHY ARE THINGS ONLY WRONG AND "WAR CRIMES" WHEN AZULA DOES THEM? EVEN WHEN BY THE VERY DEFINITION OF HOW WAR CRIMES WORK SHE GETS A PASS SINCE SHE'S A LITERAL CHILD SOLDIER?

what do you think the gaang/fire nations kids’ respective playground activities were in elementary school?
well obviously not all of them attended elementary school (toph was homeschooled; it seems like zuko was too?? but maybe he did go to school like azula but he simply had no friends) so im kinda just gonna base this off what kids did in my elementary school for those of them who had a less than ideal upbringing
obviously aang was playing, the center of attention as he showed the other kids his advanced airbending tricks his marbles or his air scooter, flying around on his glider, flying around on his bison, running around the temple, eating fruits straight from the trees, laughing, loving his friends and being beloved by them in return.
katara was playing little team sports like 3 on 3 soccer or dodgeball or kickball, jump rope, hopscotch, snowball fighting, freeze tag, penguin sledding, red rover red rover you have to come over, playing make believe that she was a dreaded pirate king, or a daring and valiant knight, or a mom in a family (for some reason to little girls these are all interchangeable???), gossiping about the cool older boys, and you know, trying not to show off her waterbending in front of the other kids because her mom said it was dangerous even though she doesn’t really get why...
when sokka wasn’t trying to convince the other kids to play pai sho with him despite its reputation for being a boring game for old people, practicing with his boomerang and other weapons, or simply just joining katara in whatever game she felt like playing, he was trying to prove to the older boys that he was basically grown like them and trying to get them to take him hunting, reading books that were way too mature for his age before they got confiscated by kanna “for his own good,” or finding the nearest adult and asking them really specific, intelligent questions that they absolutely did not have the answers to.
toph would have loved the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of kids her age, even though she also would have quickly realized that she is far smarter and wiser than these simple children. she would learn this fact by telling them a story that is obviously made up, with no intention to obfuscate the fact that she was making it up on the spot, only for all the kids to lap it up fully believing that this actually happened to her no questions asked. at which point she would marvel at the stupidity of her peers—nay, the human race.
zuko was the type of kid who liked to pretend he was a cat or a dragon (one of those) and run around in his own little world on all fours meowing and snarling and hissing at people, blissfully unaware that all the other kids thought he was an absolute freak.
suki was leading the other kids on expeditions across the island, running through the woods, climbing trees and picking fruit, tackle fighting them in the dirt, pretending to be a kyoshi warrior, pretending to be avatar kyoshi herself, stealing freshly baked pies off of windowsills, denying the pie stealing allegations with crumbs around her mouth, apologizing to her neighbors for stealing their delicious pies, etc.
ty lee was always the center of attention, dazzling the other girls with her perfect cartwheels and backflips and other gymnastics and acrobatics, or entertaining everyone with fanciful little stories, or telling girls which boys totally had crushes on them, or having a queue around the block as she told everyone one by one what their fortunes would be (she was totally bullshitting them but they ate it up), or sometimes simply running around in her own little world only half aware that everyone was following her with their eyes as her braid swung around her shoulders and she laughed.
mai would sit quietly in the corner and simply observe, a book in her lap, trying to avoid making conversation with any of the other kids, or worse yet, being roped into one of their games, the ultimate torture.
azula didn’t like watching ty lee show off to her adoring audience or sitting in the corner with mai in silence, and since those were her only two friends, her other option was simply to demand that she be given more work during recess hours. while the other kids may be happy playing like simpleminded fools, she was not like them, she was smarter and more gifted, and therefore would benefit from using her extra time to advance far beyond them, surpass her peers in every way, simply because she could, and thus she ought to.
bonus: jet liked using his recess hours to try to convince the other kids that it was obviously in their best interest to escape the tyranny of adults who tried to force them into being brainwashed by such hideous forms of groupthink as “reading” “writing” and “arithmetic” by running away into the woods to start a kids’ only cult commune in the trees. at which points his parents would get complaints from the other parents that jet was being a bad influence on their kid, and they’d be like “oh my god jet your teachers arent the thought police please just do your homework”

If anyone's a "pensive, tortured soul" wouldn't that be Azula since she tends to internalize everything?
I generally think most of the child cast are tortured souls, seen as they all had to grow up insanely fast (ironically the only exception for this is likely Zuko). Azula was forced to interact with adults who likely cared little for talking to a child in an appropriate manner, forcing her to act like them or risk them disapproving of her to her father, learning big words and mature topics before she fully understood them. Both Sokka and Katara were forced into pseudo-parental roles. We see Katara having to do most of the chores, and Sokka spent his day 'training' the young children (though I wouldn't be surprised if that was just his way of getting through the day having to take care of them between hunts, keeping them entertained and stopping them asking questions about where their parents are, because Katara and the other women were busy). Aang was obviously forced to deal with the avatar business from 12, and we see Toph literally entering an adults underground fighting ring at (and most likely before seen as she had an established name for herself, 12). All of the aforementioned didn't really have anyone to properly take care of them. In Azula, Katara, and Sokka's case it's because they had absent or dead parents, and in Ozai's case just neglectful. Aang was unable to spend time with his only paternal figure, Gyatso, and was going to be further taken away from him, and Toph's parents infantilised her and barely knew her as a person. Meanwhile, while Zuko may face the most physical abuse in the series, he never had to grow up. All of the previous characters are incredibly mature, taking on massive responsibility and risk, while Zuko is the most immature character among the kids, despite being the oldest. He's so tunnel-visioned on capturing the avatar that he nearly kills his own crew, and he has Iroh to force him to calm down, a safety net to console him no one else in the show really has. This isn't necessarily to Zuko's own fault, but it's telling when the oldest character is less emotionally and psychologically mature than a twelve year old. A lot of Zuko's torture comes from his own actions biting him in the ass, while everyone else's comes from external forces (and to be honest, mostly from Zuko). Pensive is more applicable, for those who don't know it means "engaged in, involving, or reflecting deep or serious thought." (though it implies a sense of calmness or quietness when used, which Zuko doesn't have) However, the problem is, the other characters engage in pensiveness much more. Aang has to deal with sacrificing his morals (and by extension his entire living culture), Azula is forced to be on par with military generals 40 years older than her both emotionally and psychologically, Sokka and Katara are their village's most able bodied people, even Jet and Suki have to deal with leading a group of child soldiers into war, yet Zuko is allowed to do as he pleases. Which I think is the key difference between everyone else and Zuko. If Zuko fails, the only real repercussions are confined to himself. He doesn't get the throne, he's still banished, maybe some of his crew die but that seems to come second to his main goal. All of these more or less maintain the status quo, zuko still has the chance to go anonymous and live his life in the earth kingdom and be fine. If Aang, or Katara, or even Jet and Suki fail, villages burn (usually at Zuko's hand), the Earth Kingdom is wiped out, their families become names on a list of casualties. Hell, they're families already are on lists of casualties. Essentially, Zuko can quit anytime he wants, no one else has that luxury. It's not necessarily an incorrect description of Zuko, however, saying it specifically applies to him is not only a disservice to every other child character in that show, but slap in the face toward everything the Fire Nation, and even Zuko personally did to them.
