On Der Himmel Über Berlin - Wim Wenders 1987

Der Himmel Über Berlin (The Sky Over Berlin), commonly known as Wings Of Desire, was the first film I saw at the BFI. A film classic directed by Wim Wenders that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th 1987, the film was restored in 4K and was rereleased at the BFI on June 24th 2022. Usually, when writing a review or analysis, I will add a summary of the content; but I would rather you see this for yourself, should you choose to do so. I will, however, tell you that the film follows two angels (Damiel and Cassiel) through the streets and skies of Berlin as they observe its inhabitants and their thoughts. While it is a romance, I think it focuses more on the ability to love than the actual romance between the characters (Damiel and Marion, the trapeze artist). Whilst Der Himmel Über Berlin isn’t a Lynchian level of absurd, and its camerawork doesn’t have the same close-ups as David Lynch’s work, I found that the detail in the sound of this film was equivalent or at least comparable to Lynch’s visuals. Having the ability to hear a person's thoughts brings an entirely different level of intimacy between character and viewer that I am yet to find elsewhere, to the extent that it felt almost intrusive to be watching and listening in on such private matters.

The forbidden love between Damiel and Marion is greater than that of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, perhaps because Damiel isn’t grooming a 13-year-old girl into marrying him after only knowing her for a few days. Instead, he becomes enamoured with and practically stalks an unknowing grown woman and decides to change the trajectory of his entire existence just for the possibility of her loving him back. I particularly enjoyed the scene in which Damiel lay on top of Marion while she slept and visited her in her dream while dressed in armour. Keep in mind that all of this takes place in a world where invisible angels exist among people, giving hope to those in distress who cannot physically interact with them, can only see in black and white and can only be seen by children. So maybe it is pretty absurd after all.

All jokes aside, I left the BFI after watching Der Himmel Über Berlin with a greater appreciation for the things in life that are so often and easily overlooked. In one particular scene, Peter Falk speaks to Damiel (despite not being able to see him, claiming he can “feel” Damiel there) about the small things he appreciates in life. “To smoke, to have coffee and if you do it together, it's fantastic…to draw…or when your hands are cold, and you rub them together.” While it confuses any bystanders, as Falk seemingly talks to nobody, I can see why Damiel decided to exchange his immortality for the human experience. After all, he as an entity had existed long before humanity, he watched its entire development, yet he had never lived.

While I was expecting the film's poetic and ethereal ambience, I was not expecting it to be funny. Furthermore, I think the use of this humour amid the whispers and pensive scenes was done very tastefully. You don't see a frustrated Peter Falk trying on copious amounts of hats until he finally finds one that he likes straight after you see a man jump off a high rise. You do, however, see Falk repeating the speech that he made Damiel word for word and shaking hands with thin air, thinking he was talking to an angel. Another thing that I was entirely not expecting was the presence of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds in the film. At first, I was excited to see The Boatman's Call vinyl used in a scene and hear The Carny and From Her To Eternity in the film's original soundtrack. Still, the band made a cameo appearance, performing a gig at which Damiel and Marion speak for the first time. I cannot deny that this made my face lit up with joy. In fact, my favourite part of the film was when we hear Nick thinking to himself, "One more song, then it's over, and I'm not gonna tell you about a girl,” just seconds before leaning forward to his microphone and proceeding to say “I’m gonna tell you about a girl.”

Really what I took away from this film was an appreciation for the beauty of life itself and the human experience as a whole and a deeper understanding of how little we know about the happenings of other people’s lives. While I do have more to say about this film, I fear I would either be repeating myself, or this would just become a list of things that I found funny with no real input on my part. Something that you have to have seen the film to understand, so for now, I think this is sufficient.

I love your blog, and I love apes and monkeys! And I have to say that, beyond just the ethical issues (which are a dealbreaker entirely on their own), I think primates acting funny in a natural environment is just, like, inherently funnier? It’s just a lot more fun to see primates acting like primates, than the humour being that they are acting like humans, or interacting with humans (unless they are humans I guess gsggshdhd).

Ape wants and wills.. hm. As far as first hand experience I can only speak about chimpanzees and whoo boy are they a particular bunch of kiddos.

We regularly gave the chimps blankets for nest building and one chimp made his nest every night in the drain of the enclosure, where the water runs off when we hose the indoor. So his blankets got wet every day and we had to replace them everyday.

And I've mentioned trading before so with a dry blanket, I can point at it and show my reward and the chimps would usually slide the blanket over to me. Sometimes one of the females would suddenly decide she wanted that blanket that was sitting in the dirt so she sometimes refused trades and that's her right. But I could never, ever get them to touch a wet blanket. They hated it even for 2 whole bananas they wouldn't do it. They would play dumb as if they didn't see what I pointed at and would bring me anything else around in an effort to get the reward. Wet blankies are icky!!

One of the female chimps would "dance" to music, she really liked a distinct bass and would rock side to side to the beat. The first few times I saw this I was worried about it being a stress behavior but she stopped whenever I would stop the music.

I've mentioned it elsewhere but every morning when I did first checks, the chimps all wanted to play chase. If I didn't do this, they would get very upset with me.

The matriarch of one of the troupes I worked with was older (59!!) And she she was slowing down and not as mobile as the youngsters so I had to be sneaky and get her extra treats and supplements because she sometimes would get her produce stolen from her. It was fun to sneak around with her bc we would make eye contact, look around to see if any of the other chimps are paying attention, I would flash what I had to give her and we had a spot we would meet where it was easy for me to shove the sandwich or whatever it was through the mesh at a spot where she could easily reach it.

The alpha male of that group was very fast and dare I say, selfish. It's not unusual for the alpha to want all the good stuff to himself but this guy would straight up steal from the elderly lady mentioned above. I always had to bring 2 extras of anything good because if his hands weren't full, he was charging to steal from the matriarch.

Occasionally, though, she would get mad at him for stealing something good and she would cryyyy so loud you could hear it a half mile away at produce storage. She'd swipe at him and yell and get mad and huff away and he would usually approach her later for grooms or other bonding.

A different female chimp had kinda bad hand eye coordination. To feed these guys, the paneling on the roof was wide enough for them to stick an arm out and we would toss up produce or enrichment and they could grab it from the air. Well, she wasn't good at catching and I'm not the best arm so sometimes I would have to toss the same apple or whatever a handful of times before she caught it and when she finally did, she would shake her fist at me and try to fake me out as if she was going to hurl the apple right at my head.

My groups absolutely loved vidoes. I even brought my own tablet from home so they could watch on a bigger screen. Anything with people or animals and especially other chimps were a huge hit and my go-to rainy day enrichment.

One of my groups was extremely difficult to get locked inside to clean the yard. They were super suspicious and wouldn't hang out inside if I was there, regardless of the treats I brought. But, like most chimps, they hated rain. So any day there was a big storm that group would be easily locked in and I had to do all my cleaning and maintenance in that habit in pouring rain. “I won’t force you to accept what I’m offering,” she says gently. “But calling a Luthor for help means calling for a Luthor solution-- and nothing says Luthor more than shopping at the best boutique in town.”

Nia nods, but she ducks her chin with a swallow. “It’s just…”

“Just what?”

“I don’t want you to think that’s why I called, you know?” Nia expels a sigh, working a harried hand through her hair. “It’s just that Kara was supposed to come with me for moral support, but she’s had to cancel four times and the ceremony is in three days and if Andrea hears one more time that I don’t have a dress, she’s going to kill me…”

“Nia,” Lena says softly. Nia stops, and meets Lena’s gaze with a hesitant one of her own. “I would never think you were calling for a hand out. I’m offering.” Nia still looks uncertain, but Lena holds her gaze. “You asked for help… so let me help.”

Nia considers her words, studying Lena carefully. Finally, she wraps her arms around herself with a steadying sigh. “If you’re sure…”

“I’m sure.”

Nia follows a few paces behind as Lena turns and approaches the door to the shop, lingering to let Lena be the one to press the buzzer to be allowed in. But as they near, the door opens for them, ready and waiting to admit them.

Luthors don’t use buzzers.

“Welcome to Sylvie.” A pair of well groomed attendants relieve them of their purses, exchanging their bags for a couple flutes of champagne offered by a third.

The showroom looks much like any other, as could be glimpsed through the windows, styled with clean lines and immaculately dressed mannequins. The true Sylvie experience, however, happens further in, beyond the curtains that separate the dressing rooms from the rest of the store.

“If you’ll follow me, ladies, I’ll show you to your dressing room.”

Lena wonders what Nia expected as they approached one of the curtained off areas. Perhaps a cramped alcove like the hollywood thrift stores shown in coming-of-age films, where your elbows knocked the walls as you changed and you’d be lucky to find a stool to put your own clothes. Certainly it isn’t the plush, spacious room that awaits them, if Nia’s wide eyes are anything to go by.

Nia perches on the edge beside her, her gaze flicking to the small boudoir in one corner and another curtain that shields the actual changing area. It’s designed to be beyond comfortable, a place where one could spend hours-- and lots and lots of money.

“So, what do you have for us today, Lena? Another benefit gala to dazzle?”

“Actually,” Lena replies, “Miss Nal here is covering the Golden Globes this week for CatCo Worldwide.”

“How exciting!” Charnelle rounds on Nia. “And what are you looking for in your gown?”

Caught with a mouthful of champagne, Nia freezes, then swallows audibly. “Um…” she coughs out. “Something nice? I probably shouldn’t be outdressing the stars or anything, so nothing too crazy?” She shrugs. “I don’t know, exactly.”

“Charnelle,” Lena intercedes, “could you bring us some formal options in black, maroon, or blue? Floor length, of course.”

Charnelle nods, beaming. “Absolutely.” She gives Nia a wink. “She has your colors nailed, honey. What are your measurements?”

Nia stares at them both. “Uh. A six, usually?”

“They’ll need your measurements to ensure a proper fit,” Lena delivers gently. “Do you mind if Charnelle--?”

“All right!” Charnelle chirps, wrapping up her tape. “I’ll be right back with some options. You two stay here and get comfortable, all right? I’ll be right back.”

She disappears, and Nia all but collapses onto the chaise next to Lena. “I can’t believe I did that,” she groans.

“Good,” Lena murmurs, sipping her drink. “Well, I can’t promise anything about a dream dress, but I’ll call it a win if we get out of here without any tears.”

“Cheers to that,” Nia concurs, lifting her own glass for a deep sip.

In that moment, Charnelle returns, wheeling a short cart of long dresses along with her.

“All right, ladies-- who’s ready to see some gowns?”

Lena nods, but before she can turn away, Nia catches her by the wrist.

Lena turns her wrist, allowing her hand to settle into Nia’s palm. Giving it a squeeze, Lena offers her a smile.

I have a panel interview in 2 weeks with some higher ups in an organization I’ve been really interested in. This is my first panel interview ever and I don’t know how to prepare. Do you have any pointers?

During a panel interview, you’ll be asked various questions by various people in the company. Maybe 3-5 people. Call and ask them who is going to be conducting the interviews, if you haven’t gotten a confirmation email with their names. What I would personally do is try to get the names of the people conducting the interview, then look them up on LinkedIn to see their education/projects/passions. Keep something in mind for all of them [make notes on your computer, consider this a cheat sheet].

Be sure to dress well. Love it, hate it, agree with it or whatever, just be well-groomed, well-dressed, and have fresh breath.

Decide if you’re going to shake hands or not [due to COVID]. Whatever your answer, commit to it. If you’re going to go with shaking hands, walk in to the meeting and immediately shake hands, thank everyone for their time [“Good morning, I’m Ana Mjalti, thanks for having me today.”] they’ll introduce themselves and you move on to the next person. You do this to each person.

Bring a portfolio with you, one that has a notepad. That’s where you can have your cheat sheets handy and you can take notes, with anything that’s of interest to you. Bring an extra copy of your resume + pertinent information that you can store in the portfolio as well.

Think of each of your work experiences and what you learned. Do not go into this interview trying to wing it. Activate your long term memory beforehand. Write everything down on your computer and print out a copy, put it in your portfolio. Divide them up by qualities and specific experiences. This is most important; they have your resume. There’s no need to “read” them your resume. Tell them about your specific experiences. “I navigated many obstacles during my tenure at X, including one specific instance where the company was in the red and using my expertise in cybersecurity and connections, I was able to bring in new contacts to take them up too black. ” You’re being hired for a JOB. They want to know that you can do that job. Do this ahead of time, and have it printed out in your portfolio. While you’re taking “notes” you can easily reference that paper to give you a boost of confidence. Sometimes, your nerves will make you forget simple, specific instances but your writing and notes won’t fail you.

I will re-emphasize this. The company has your resume. They don’t have specific details about your impact. Remember to always spin the story to how you impacted the previous companies/projects/etc for the better. This is a place of business, these people want to feel confident that you can make them money.

Have some questions ready for them. Always ask something. Don’t say “nope, thanks for the interview”. Say, “thank you for your time, I do have some questions for each of you.” MAKE EACH QUESTION PERSONAL TO EACH INTERVIEWER. This is why it helps to have that cheat sheet. “Max [who you know works in animal rescue], I’m very interested in community outreach programs as I believe we are stronger together. Does this company offer any community programs that you are particularly passionate about?” “Emma [who went to MIT and loves education], tell me about a typical work-week for you?” “Vidal [who has been the head interviewer], what are your expectations for an employee in the first 90 days? What have your past employees gone on to do?” “Sneha [who is the artistic lead], what has been your biggest challenge in this company? What is your favorite project here?” You are planting the seed that a) you are already invested in seeing yourself at this company and b) they want to work with someone like you. If you DON”T have each person’s “interests, still make a list of questions and during the interview, write the name of the interviewer you think would be the most likely to answer.

At the end, say something like “I want to thank you all for your time and this interview, regardless of the outcome, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed speaking with you.” Stand up, shake hands, walk out, get the job.
