Woah! An Original Character I created for Rottmnt??? Nooowayyyyy!!
Her name is Bog. (for now.) She was to be one of Baron Draxums experiments, to be mutated into a warrior like the other 4. But sense she was a female, Baron Draxum did not think she would ever be strong enough to be a warrior, even potentially after mutation. So he left the little turtle for other experiments. But when the lab exploded some of the ooz landed on Bog, mutating her into a child-like creature. She has lived alone and scavenged for 14 years.
This is her species photo! Bog Turtle!
Isn't it so CUTE!?? 😍 And its eyes are so big!!!

It takes a village to protect a turtle!
Over this past summer, NYSDEC staff, reptile experts from the The Mid-Atlantic Center for Herpetology and Conservation (MACHAC), SUNY faculty and students, and other partners worked together to census a protected piece of bog turtle habitat in NY State.
The bog turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) is a federally listed threatened species and is considered endangered here in New York, with small populations tied closely to areas of appropriate wetland habitat. Results of the census are encouraging for this population—we found turtles of all life stages, from an adult first found nearly 30 years ago, to juveniles, and even a few that hatched just last year!
Bog turtles are threatened by development and degradation of wetlands, destruction of migration corridors, invasive species, introduced disease, and illegal collection. All native reptile species in New York are protected by law and cannot be collected without a permit.

😲 Endangered species alert! 😲
Researchers at Virginia Tech discovered a Bog Turtle on their study site that looked to be in questionable health and needed an expert opinion and they brought it to us. Bog Turtles are listed as threatened Endangered Species Act and are listed as locally endangered in Virginia, threatened by the illegal poaching and trade of this species, habitat loss/fragmentation, degrading water quality, mortality from car strikes, and growing populations of predators (such as raccoons).
Bog Turtles are so highly sought after by the illegal pet trade that there are several cases of poachers breaking into high security zoos and other facilities to steal them. This is why we are only posting that we had this beautiful turtle AFTER the fact — after an exam determined this individual was healthy he was returned back to the wild. Illegal wildlife trafficking is a SERIOUS problem that is killing creatures like this one. Don't encourage the abduction of wild animals, and if you suspect a wildlife crime is occurring, you can call 1-800-237-5712 to leave an anonymous tip.
We would like to give big thanks to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and researchers at the Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources Staff for trusting us to evaluate such a sensitive, rare, and beautiful animal.

ANIMAL OF THE DAY
today's animal of the day is the bog turtle!
the bog turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) is the smallest turtle in North America, it only grows up to 4.5 inches in length (11.4cm)!
unfortunately these cute little guys are critically endangered with only about 2,500 to 10,000 left in the wild.
