I have a tiny little holiday tradition of my own - watching a concert 🎶 on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, I’m watching a giant documentary about these guys recording “Let It Be” live, which is wonderful and sad 😢 at the same time… Anyway, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year 🎆 and recommend one of my favourite books about music - “The Forensic Records Society” 💿 It’s about two friends who start a club for people into vinyl in a local pub. By and by, the club goes through all the stages characteristic for development of a society (tyranny, schism, appearance of a new prophet). Ever have a moment when something just CLICKED and you really understood the appeal of it for the first time? I was never a huge fan of cumulative stories like The House That Jack Built until I had one of those "NOW I GET IT" moments, upon reading Barbara S. Garriel's "I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello" (2004). Based on the song about the old lady who swallowed a fly, this book takes everything to a droll extreme, with the shy fellow in question gulping down instrument after musical instrument in a weird, wonderful, sing-song story that's a great introduction to the orchestra for young kids. John O'Brien's illustrations are as warped and whimsical as the tale itself, and so much fun. “A time of myth, a time of beauty, a time of rock and roll.” 🎼✨🎼✨🎼 Trigger warnings for drug use and mental illnesses! ✨🎼✨ Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie reminded me of a less emotionally intense version of Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and I kept hoping it would be some sort of different twist but in the end was a bit disappointed because it didn’t happen. Songs in Ursa Major follows the relationship between Jane and Jesse, their different bands, and how secrets and drugs get in between them. A story of music and love, it was a mediocre read for me. The relationship between the characters was predictable, and it really made it hard to care about them. The only character relationships I like in this book were that between Jane and Grace, and Jane and Willy. This had so many Daisy Jones and the Six elements, and at times I struggled to get through this book because of it. The only real differences I found between them were that Jane had her family, and own band. The only thing I actually really liked about this book was how art and music were talked about and discussed and really felt! I’m a huge music lover, and reading about this aspect of the novel was intriguing and interesting. My Year of the Book - Day 31: As they said on Monty Python, “...and now for something completely different...” I love to give book-shaped gifts. and when I give gifts of that nature to my wife, the added bonus is they stay around the house. Such is the case with this signed copy of “Midnight Miles: On the Road Through 5 Continents & 17 Countries,” a 2006 paperback-only release from the original lineup of Maroon 5. It is chock full of awesome onstage and backstage photos by Christopher West-McCann, with occasional text (often a jumble of humorous inside jokes and other non-sequiters) from each member of the band. The venues grow as the volume goes along, visually signifying that these guys were definitely on their way. And when @maroon5 play the Forum in June, @dianehodgkins will be there with @erinhodgkins. The book’s intro is from CSN & Hollies great Graham Nash. Why? Did you know Mr. Nash paid for the recording studio time that resulted in M5’s first successful demos? I didn’t until I read about it here. I finished #ifievergetoutofhere by #ericgansworth last night and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s about an 11 year boy who lives on the Tuscarora Reservation starting school off the Rez for the first time in 1975. It chronicles his troubles in making friends, dealing with bullies, life on the rez, and his serious love for music (mainly the Beatles).
