Anyway, I’m back from the war (preparing refs for ArtFight), so here are my TGCF and Epic: the Musical thoughts:
[MAJOR TGCF NOVEL SPOILERS]
Xie Lian’s story is pretty similar to Odysseus’s imo
“The blood on your hands / Is something you won’t lose / all you can choose is whose” (The Horse and the Infant) - this entire plot point is pretty much the “two people and one cup of water.” Just like Odysseus must kill the son of Hector, Xie Lian can’t deal with the war and provide war to Yong’an, and he chooses to prioritize Xianle/the people under him
“If I became the monster…” is a different reason for blackening - Odysseus wants to protect his crew and family while Xie Lian isn’t protecting anyone at this point - but that song feels MADE for him tbh. The point where Odysseus repeats, “Oh, Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves,” (a point made by Poseidon), where he’s repeating Poseidon’s logic of not showing mercy compared with Xie Lian believing White No-Face/Bai Wuxiang’s philosophy after those infected by the Human Face Disease killed him over and over again
The “Monster” clip could also work for Jun Wu / Crown Prince of Wuyong (even better than for Xie Lian because he was still trying to save the people of Wuyong by sacrificing lives while Xie Lian didn’t really make an active decision to harm anyone until he wanted to release the Human Face Disease, which, again, wasn’t to protect others), but I don’t remember enough to make more of an argument / animatic
Mu Qing and Eurylochus are pretty different yet similar as well - they’re both willing to use “unscrupulous” methods and leave behind others - albeit Eurylochus is talking about leaving their men to stay as pigs on Circe’s Island, I believe, while Mu Qing is not really as cruel or selfish as he’s portrayed; he was prepared to sacrifice himself to save Xie Lian and Feng Xin at the end. However, like, Eurylochus, he’s “not as moral” as Xie Lian and Feng Xin (Odysseus and Polities in Eurylochus’s case) and leaves Xie Lian and Feng Xin during their exile.
Idk if Mu Qing would confront Xie Lian the way Eurylochus confronts Odysseus in Mutiny though. He was weirdly excited about Xie Lian maybe killing someone (someone mentioned it a while ago; I don’t remember exactly) and seemed to want Xie Lian to be less “perfect.” Plus, Eurylochus is confronting Odysseus about running away from the sea monster Scylla, which I don’t see Mu Qing condemning. HOWEVER, Eurylochus’s doubt in Odysseus's leadership and ability to keep the crew alive is something I could definitely see in Mu Qing (source: just trust me, bro)
(To be honest, I don’t really get Eurylochus’s character that much - he’s upset Odysseus chose to run from Scylla, but he was all for leaving their men to Circe? - but those albums aren’t fully out yet, so it may make more sense later)
I refuse to believe Feng Xin would work as Polities though. It makes sense in all senses of morality, character function, and plot, but Feng Xin would not sing “Open Arms.” I refuse to believe it.
Pei Ming has the same vibes as Hermes (“Wouldn’t You Like” and “Dangerous”) actually. I don’t have any clear reasoning, but it makes sense to me, yanno?
Speaking of which, while Jun Wu has similar vibes and ideologies to Zeus (“it is the will of the gods”) and Poseidon, if I had to cast anyone as Poseidon, it would HAVE to be Shi Wudu.
“His title of ‘Water Tyrant was earned due to him capsizing any ship that did not give him offerings” (TGCF Wiki; Book 1, Ch.13) and “When a god comes down and makes a fleet drown, is he scared that he’s doing something wrong? Or does he keep us in check, so we must respect him, and now no one dares to piss him off?” (Monster)
“Shi Wudu considers death better than experiencing or watching prolonged suffering and pain” (TGCF Wiki; Book 3, Ch.124) and “I mean, you totally could have avoided this / Had you just killed my son” (Ruthlessness)
There’s probably more to say, but it’s ~5 am. I was prepared to sleep, like, 3 hours ago. If there are mistakes, no there aren't

Hi, I just want to send a huge thank you for your recent appreciation to one of my edits! :D As well your work for The Six Musical are amazing. I am curious too, why did you cast who you did?
Aww thank you <3 and no problem you make some really amazing edits :)
As for Six I went through a few different options for a few of the Queens before deciding.
Catherine of Aragon - Esmeralda has great church and praying scenes that match with Catherine's plea to Henry. She was pretty much the only one I had in mind for this since her scenes fit so well.
Anne Boleyn - I went between Jasmine and Meg for a while. Meg has that sass that Anne has and that same sexuality. I ended up going with Jasmine because she has so many good scenes that work for Anne, she has the sassy attitude and the sexual scenes but also some good emotional scenes that I felt worked well.
Jane Seymour - I was originally looking at Aurora for her because of her "death" scene as well as the scenes of her in the bed because of how much that plays a part in Jane's song. The thing with Aurora is she has such little screen time so trying to edit multiple long videos with her was going to be a challenge. Then I remembered Odette's death scene and she has so many good emotional scenes as well as big singing numbers that match so well with Heart of Stone and I have so many ideas for that one with her.
Anne of Cleves - This was a toss up between Pocahontas and Mulan. The both have similar makeover scenes where they're made to look like a completely different person which fits both Haus of Holbein as well as Get Down. I went with Mulan though because her transformation is so much more drastic when you look at her makeup version vs the Ping version since Pocahontas is still feminine in her original outfit.
Catherine Howard - I was originally just going to make one video and it was this one which is why the series is so out of order cause it wasn't until I was like 3/4 of the way done that I decided to do more of them. I saw this animatic All You Wanna Do | Six the Musical animatic [FLASH WARNING] (youtube.com) which was one of my main inspirations to do the series and the way they drew the character as well as the way the character is in the musical I wanted a character who was sexual and had a lot of dance scenes which of course is Holli. I cast Thumbelina as her younger self because in my opinion they look similar but also Thumbelina has that naive youth about her plus I didn't want to cast a really young character in a romance role with an adult character.
Catherine Parr - Books and writing, there's so many verses in that song that focus on that. Belle is the perfect fit scene wise for a song about writing letters as well as a super emotional song.
I have seen other people's casts and there are so many different characters that you could use for each role. For me it mainly came down to footage for the scenes I wanted to make. I would be interested to see you make an edit with your casting choices ;)

Hi, hello, your animatic has been living rent free in my head and I've rambled to a friend how much I love it, so I thought I probably should do the same directly to you! (I know this was a gift for someone else so I hope it's not weird gkjhdsf)
First of all, thank you for introducing this song to me, I'll be listening to it a thousand times XD
Second of all, aaaaa I love how well you fitted all the images to the lyrics!! All the shenanigans and fumbles are absolutely endearing! I love Sun using his leg as a fake guitar haha! And Moon flying away dejectedly with the cable when they think they already blew it. All the expressions are amazing, and I love how they can go from smooth and suave to nervous wrecks in a second XD But they always look so heartfelt in whatever they are saying! And I think my favorite part is when they are complimenting y/n, quickly switching so that each can say what they love about them!
And omg when they turn into Eclipse to get on one knee, because that's the part they both want to be present for aaaaaaaaaa
I am so not normal about this animatic at all, incredible work with it! The art style is delightful and colorful and so much fun! I hope you are proud of it because my god is it an amazing animatic! ^_^
Tumblr media
chaotik!! this is so sweet thank you!! i had a long day driving in the snow and reading this revitalized me!! (and no worries at all, a gift to one is a gift to all in the fandom. that's why I love gift exchange events like this! we all get to enjoy the fun!)
you actually covered a lot of the reasons why i wanted to do an animatic of the full song. it's a great song (sad it was cut from Frozen 2, but it understandably wouldn't have fit plot-wise) and just a wonderful balance of fun and vulnerability and sweetness. one of my favourite songs about love tbh. the line "I planned to really try to be the opposite of me" just gets me every time—the words, the way the music begins to slow, the way Jonathan Groff delivers the lines—it's just so raw
and Sun's guitar part was one of the first ideas i had for the animatic! just the way the lines are delivered always made me think of air guitar, so i was really anxious to get that part right (haha) it's still one of my favourite moments in the whole thing (the fact this silly bean is acting all suave one moment and then pulls back to strum his leg like a jester rockstar. gosh i love this guy!)
i initially planned to cut it off at the part Moon gets carried off, because i was worried about time. but there was just so much i wanted to do with the animatic (especially the rapid-fire compliments and Eclipse coming out) so i'm glad i was able to do it all! it was a big project, but i'm so happy with how it turned out and happy i could share this wild song with everyone too!
also! you reminded me i still need to share all the thumbnails and the memes i said i would do once i finished! expect those soon!

the way y'all are handling ocean idiots is actually kind of inspiring me, because i have Ideas but i feel pressured to turn it into a whole blown Thing when all i want to do is just have fun with it, because every artist/writer/etc ive seen does it that way.
yall are the first people ive seen who are just trying to Vibe with your blorbos and it makes doing the same thing feel more achievable to me. god bless
PS larus is my favorite. love the little skrunkly bird man. also can i steal yalls powerpoint idea 🥺?
PSS i assume everyone else working on ocean idiots will see this bc yall are mutuals, but in the event that they dont, could you please forward this to them? because i want them to know that theyre indirectly inspiring a random person with their Just-For-Fun-Creation as well >< many thanks
Aw, anon this is incredibly sweet. I sent your message along to the others before I got around to this answer both because I wanted to make sure they saw it, and because I wanted to respond to this in a way that really reflects my gratitude.
It's honestly so tempting to start making ideas "a thing". I didn't really understand that until the last couple of years and let me tell you, there is a lot of pressure to do that. People like projects! They like updates! They love seeing the progression of a story and getting invested in that. I absolutely understand why people leave comments like "this should be a webtoon" or "you guys should make an animated series". In a perfect world, that'd be a dream! The temptation to do that and establish a base is also attractive because it can really form a base that gives numbers and comments, which artists of all stripes thrive on (myself very much included).
But what most people never really see is the downsides of that. From their perspective, a one episode animatic, a chapter or two of fic or few panels of a comic, isn't a lot. It's kinda disappointing, and I get that. For the creator though, there's any number of reasons that things fall apart. Personal differences with friends amplified by the stress of expectations. Creative burnout. Shutting down due to the sheer scope of the undertaking. These are all real, and it sucks to deal with.
For me personally, I know I do want to tackle trying to write more of ocean idiots, maybe even try to nanowrimo this shit (not in an actual month but you get the gist). But that's just me. If it bums me out or I put it to the side, then that's just my personal project to pick up later. If we tried to make it a series, then we'd deal with the stress of trying to keep up a schedule on top of lives (college, jobs, personal lives, etc). It'd take the joy out of these characters we love.
Some of the most fun I've had in the past few years I've been writing and creating has just been fucking around with my friends. Throwing silly au ideas back and forth and exchanging art and fics for no one but ourselves. There's a genuine satisfaction that comes from it.
Not everything has to be a big production. Artists don't make their magnum opus every time. They draw shitposts and write crackfic and make funny edits. It's healing to have something silly, something fun just for you, and to share it if you want. That can connect with people, great! But it can also just be for you. I could go on a whole tangent about social media and the commodification of attention/art but that's not really what we're here for.
I hope that whatever you create, anon, that it makes you happy. That it brings a little joy to your day. That you can have that thing you share with maybe just your closest friends to play with. Lord knows I need to remind myself of that too.

College Adventures Special Episode VIII: Interview with Lauren Faust!
I promised I'd get to meet a big name in animation, and here she is! This semester I managed to get into a class taught by THE Lauren Faust, creator of MLP: FiM and DC Superhero Girls!
Sadly, I'm not a die-hard fan of any of her series, but I tried my best to get and compile information that fans would be interested in!
Back when she was working on MLP, Lauren was grateful that her fellow TV coworkers gave her freedom to tell the story she wanted to tell instead of letting to toy marketers bully her. (According to my friend, the show sold out a lot more once Lauren left, though)
A change from executives she wound up listening to: Originally Pinkie was a pegasus and Rainbowdash wan't, because Lauren thought wings would make Pinkie's hyperactivity stand out even more. Their species eventually got swapped in the final cut of course.
Lauren really wanted DC Superhero Girls and Wander over Yonder to be 22min shows, but executives forced her to make them 11min. Shame, because I do think being 22min would have been better for both.
A big reason of why Lauren always wants to make "Girl shows starring girl characters made by girl staff" is because executives often tell her that animation is for boys only and to make her shows more "boy-oriented" (Seriously, with people still like that in this day and age, it's really a lose-lose scenario)
I also got to see the pilot animatic for her rejected Netflix series Toil and Trouble! I don't think I'm allowed to say too much about it, so I'll provide a non-spoiler review!
The pilot was really fun and the animation+writing much more mature than Lauren's previous shows. It did a good job at making the characters really likeable, too! Toil is a great protag and her voice actress did an amazing job! My only issues are- the first 5 minutes are VERY exposition-heavy about the rules of magic, ghosts, and familiars. The third act goes by a bit too fast, too- Toil literally says the moral of the story in way too much detail, then solves the problem pretty easily soon after. I wish the pilot was split into two episodes, so both these issues could be automatically solved- it would also give the show's many side characters room to breathe, too!
Despite Toil and Trouble being cancelled, Lauren is pushing on ahead and continuing to work on more unannounced projects!
Her favorite series that she's worked on is Foster's Home, because she feels that she and her husband Craig both contributed equally to it! She also really liked the relative freedom she had in directing action on DC Superhero Girls.
I was surprised to hear she didn't have that great a time working on MLP because of the creative restrictions from higher-ups. But she's still really happy and grateful the show got such a dedicated fanbase!
While she's fine with fandoms, she dislikes the idea of pandering to them with fanservice or validating headcanons. She said if there was any of that in her shows, someone else on the creative team did it, not her.
Her storyboarders on MLP originally didn't take their job seriously because they were making a "little kids show", so Lauren had to whip them into shape and make them try harder.
Re. Foster's Home: The "Frankie is an imaginary friend" theory is false. None of that was ever the intention from the writers.
For DC Hero Girls: Originally, Cheetah's dad was supposed to have hunting trophies in his room. But because British censorship laws mean you can't show trophy hunting in cartoons (even as a bad thing the bad guys do), they had to negotiate it down to make sure none of the trophies were of endangered animals in the final product.
But yeah, those are the highlights from my time with Lauren Faust! Hope you all liked it- and if you do want to hear more about Toil and Trouble, let me know! I'll see what I can do! But that's not all- I've actually been scheduled to meet up with another very famous animation showrunner in the coming weeks, so expect another big interview post very soon!

OK so the image isn’t that important or great but i’ve been really obsessed with the song Birthday Suit by Cosmo Sheldrake and i cannot get the idea out of my head about King Rentheking’s story arc aligning with the lyrics-
(the photo is just like focus because originally i wanted to do little drawings for each of the lyrics sort of animatic style but then i couldn’t finish it in one sitting and i decided i didn’t need to finish it) so instead of doing that, i’m gonna just go through the lyrics and what part/ why i think it aligns with the storyyyy thus far!
“Weighed down by morning, in my birthday suit” - sun rise over the crastle, ren wearing his lil crown and big ol king cloak -> i think the crown and power/ responsibility has been a lot of pressure on ren and i think he is scared and desperate, he’s pulling last ditch efforts to try to live up to what bdubs accidentally(?) cursed him to
“lift up the evening, just for a while” - down in the vault w/ impulse setting up the costume party and secretly leading everyone down there -> it’s almost like accidentally a flex from impulse- he has more power than the king! it seems absurd but bare w/ me; he got everyone to conjugate together, no one actually listens to the king, impulse just gave out the kings diamonds full stop- ya see where i’m going? and some of that is ren’s own fault, like in rens desperation he is further severing his connection with his people
”backwards, upside down, and inside out. so hold on or we’ll all fall down” everyone scattering like that one scene in ratatouille all fleeing in different directions -> they all left cause they know they were doing something they weren’t supposed to and they didn’t want to be get caught. ren is a bit of a tyrant, they knew what would happened if they stayed. the ‘hold on or we’ll al fall down’ is so HDJFJJSJFJJS to me because there is something to lose on both sides almost?? like for ren, if he goes too far he’s going to be overthrown so he has to hold on to whatever he can to retain power because he’s lost support and credibility. like he broke the one thing he was hired to fix. but for everyone else, they’re already getting the short straw! they have no money anymore with rens hoarding and the stupid royal emeralds, the laws are getting more and more absurd, like what else are they supposed to do? they have to be strong and fight ren because if they don’t, he’s just going to keep digging himself into a hole and dragging everyone down w/ him.
”oh, heave the oceans too, won’t you?” like just imagine all the billboards proclaiming the laws -> more just an idea of everyone (even rens own team) becoming fed up with his bs. just like ‘oh ofc, we won’t afk or do anything apparently! great!’ just sarcasm hhh
“i’ll keep my ears on” doc chillin in his garden in the perimeter -> i love how doc literally was just like ‘no’ and made his own country- its wonderful and we love him for it <3 but yeah just doc silently overhearing everything happening and being glad he’s not a part of it and doesn’t have to abide by rens laws
“i’ll keep my eyes open” either watcher grian overseeing it all from his lil cave w/ the rift OR ren paranoid and nervously checking behind him -> ren knows he’s gonna be shut down soon, with the soup group and everything, that’s why he’s becoming so desperate. everywhere it seems someone wants his head on a stake
”i’ll keep my legs in sight and wait, ‘til we all fall down” a possible future scenario, ren being beheaded as a formal gesture of his finality -> ‘til we all fall down’ except it’s ren’s head in a basket- i think everyone is just WAITING until ren falls down and no more king!! c’mon we all know how positions of power work on the hermitcraft server smh
alright and that concludes these ramblings of a lunatic!! of you read through that, tysm!! i’ve had these thoughts for a while and i’m glad to have a space to voice ‘em. but genuinely so many props to ren for pulling this off??? like it’s very hard to play the villain and be someone that everyone hates and is wishing for their demise but he does it so well and continues to put in that one of a kind effort and flair that we’ve come to known X) UGH I JUST LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH JEJJFJSJCJJDJFJ OKK BYEEE AND IF YOU EVER WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT HERMITCRAFT PLS REACH OUT LOL -jeddie

would you rather: be friends with Peter Parker or Foggy?
make me choose: greek or italian food? and what would be your favorite meal of these (including dessert.)
ask me anything: top ships at the moment? three ships in previous fandoms? what is an art idea you've been pondering over but haven't attempted yet?
Peter Parker or Foggy Nelson:
AUugh. This is a tough one?! I think for either, we'd be able to bond over nerdy things, so as far as common ground goes, I think they're both on the same level. BUttttttttttttttttt, I can get pretty annoyed when people make a habit of flaking out on me. I know it's not Peter's fault, and like, I an be sympathetic, but if I was to imagine a scenario where I was friends with both, in the end, Foggy would be the one I'd hang out with more/call first. I bet he'd be keen to try weird new restaurants and good trucks with me.
Greek or Italian food:
Damn you really have to come for me like this??? On the one hand, I have been exploring more Mediterranean cuisine lately (and making things at home). I have been consuming frightening amounts of Labneh and recently learned how to make a pretty passable version of this dip from a restaurant in a town I used to live in, which makes for a great sharable dish. BUTttTTt I think I'd probably still have to go with Italian food. There are some dishes I rely on (risotto, braised shortribs, MEATBALLS) that I love too much. I've got to love my classic love over my hot new crush. XD
Top Ships?
I am a serial monoshipper. Not that I ever say goodbye to a ship- I'm always happy to see it crop up on my timeline, but it's hard for me to split my energy between two or more. So at the moment I have to say my brain is pretty much running on pure, unleaded Mattfoggy, but I do give a big smile to the Aziracrow and Spideypool that comes across my dash these days. And once in a while someone will share some Snake/Otacon and it's just too good and makes me feel feelings all over again.
Three Ships in Previous Fandoms:
I guess to make this a little more different, I dabbled in TF2 fandom for a hot minute- this falls squarely in the "love to see it on my dash" category. I did a little bit of art just for funsies and read a lot of fic, including struggling with auto translate on a never completed one originally written in Russian. I was happy to consume basically any combination of Spy, Scout and Sniper, especially after reading the iconic comic, "Cuanta Vida". I also had a soft spot for Tentaspy, particularly with Sniper. Kinda miss those days. That was a lovely fandom that seemed to be there for good times and good vibes.
Art Idea I haven't attempted yet:
I think I've low-key promised that I will one day write a Mattfoggy doujinshi but I'm going to have to develop about 700% more guts first, lol. I also really really want to do this Murderdock animatic to a JazzEmu short but who has the TIME?

I really love your animation! I was wondering what program you use and if you have any tips?
Hey! Thank you and also thank you for your question!
I use Firealpaca for making the art for the animations and then I cut it together with the sound in a video editor. Next to a video editor I sometimes also use flipaclip to check if the animation is going smooth enough or should I fix something.
Planning is a big part for doing an animation, first of all do a little animatic kind of thing so you can play around with the idea you have in mind. The frames you drew for this kind of animatic can be good for keyframes for your animation too (keyframes are basicaly the main poses of how your character will move from A to B), and then you start to draw little movements between the key frames.
It's also important to know if you want your animation to move a little bit slower like when your character just starts moving to draw more and more frames/little movements so your animation will go smoother and if you want something to move faster you draw less frames (It's also really useful if you draw the frames with different colors, so you can better see what's going on and you won't get crazy by not knowing what is what)
Also when I do the face mimics I usually try to do the same with my own face, so I can imagine how would that look like on the actual animation xd So using references is also important when you're doing an animation! (Especially when you animate a difficult movement and real life references are really useful)
Since I'm mostly working in a simple drawing program lip syncing would be really hard to do without actually seeing how the movements matches with the sound so I also use flipaclip for that to see how the lip sync works so I can plant it into the actual animation, and check it later if everything looks fine (I just wanted to mention this part because if you do an animation for a sound where there's talking in it and you don't have any actual animation programs it can be really useful to see how other ways you can make your characters talk which also matches to the sound)
I could talk about animation a lot more and all day, but I don't want this answer to be too long to read xd There are lots of great tutorials on youtube where people can explain better how to animate, and also seeing a visual explanation through a video can help understand the things a lot better too! And also if you study how other animators do their animations! I also kind of learned how to animate by studying other people's animation styles (like in warriors cats maps, or in animation memes)
But someone can learn the most when they try it out themselves, so don't be afraid to experience and play around by doing small animations (Flipaclip is a really great app for that if you want to animate on phone/tablet) and you're gonna be better and better by practising and studying it more and more just like when you do simple artworks!
If you want any drawing programs where you can also animate in I can mention: Krita, Photoshop, Clipstudio Paint and I also want to mention TV Paint too. (I only tried Photoshop and TV Paint to animate and they're both really good for animations - I actually tried Krita too, but I didn't really like it so I didn't really get into using that)

Undertale Alarm Clock Holiday Collab!

Since the unfinished Undertale alarm clock dialogue came out 2 years ago, I’ve wanted to put together something to showcase all the great character interactions that are present in it! That being said, there is a LOT of content for a single person to get through. With the winter season fast approaching (yes it’s currently october, but still!) I want to try and put something together as a joint fandom effort. My idea is to have something similar to a MAP,  but with voice actors on top of background music. (It will also be assigned in a similar structure to the Steven Universe art collaboration I hosted at the end of SU future, where everyone signed up to draw something from each episode, and I compiled it in a video.)
Anyway, that’s basically the idea! If you want a more specific example, the vibe I’m aiming for is this amazing animatic by GaelRice, a well known name in the Undertale community.
Below, you’ll find what is essentially an interest form, and if enough interest is garnered, I can start assigning parts to everyone at their request! The goal would be to have this completed by the end of the year. I really think this would be a fun collaboration between all the great artists (of all kinds of mediums!) in the Undertale community :)

I’m back ;) I’m the anon who loved your x-men apocalypse animation especially. Really enjoyed your latest one as well! Gorgeous animation - loved the Jean Grey/Phoenix animation! The tiktok of Erik imagining/sitting down and taking to Peter is also a fave of mine - it did make me sad about the lack of Evan Peters - Michael Fassbender/ Magneto - Quicksilver scenes in the movies. Their dynamic could have been so great!
Yes, Dark Phoenix was a real mess. I do still absolutely adore the space scene though - it looks amazing and seeing the x-mens’ powers work together is just everything. Wish there was a lot more of that across basically all the film tbh. Loved seeing Quicksilver’s abilities in zero g! But despite how much I love that scene I can’t say that the movie is good. Honestly the frequent and unnecessarily large time skips generally bothers me - they robbed us of seeing the characters develop. I also can’t believe that Peter wouldn’t tell Erik for almost 10 years after the apocalypse incident.
I did try to brain storm a few ways of Erik finding out about Peter that could potentially be dramatically/visually interesting? One of my ideas was that for some reason, maybe due to Erik seeing red due to grief of losing Raven, Erik is wreaking absolute havoc and is trying to kill Jean. But the x-men have some sort of plan or just needs to freeze Erik so they can then stop Jean without killing her. And the scene would be Peter using his speed to try to get the helmet off Erik so that Charles could communicate with/or freeze Erik. And then because of Erik’s vast power he would be able to stop Peter in his tracks (similar to Jean in the film) and there would be a scene (similar to your animation) of him “grabbing” Peter in the air - throwing him up against the wall of the train(possibly?) to stop him, angry and pissed off and there would be this moment of Peter bracing himself genuinely worried he’s about to be killed - and Charles or someone else would panicked about what Erik might be about to do as he is blinded by anger - yell out the fact that Peter is his son. Perhaps for a second Erik would see Nina in place of Peter for a brief second as he recognises the familiar resemblance (as he is staring at another child of his in danger). And then of course he wouldn’t hurt him but instead freeze due to shock. What do you think? Too much? A scenario like this would kinda only work if the time skip is much shorter - maybe just a year. I quite like fics that address the fact that Peter is probably on some level afraid of Erik when he goes full Magneto. I like the scene when Peter claims to not fear him to his mother (which imho reveals that he in fact actually does). I think it adds an interesting layer to Peter’s feelings about telling him. I don’t think Erik would kill him - even if no one revealed their familial relationship - but that uncertainty in such a scene could kinda be dramatically interesting I think? I dunno, sorry if I’m rambling - I just quite like discussing alternative scenarios with other fans :) and wanted to hear your thoughts.

Ahh welcome back Anon!! Always a pleasure to talk X-Men with you! 💕
And aww thank you! I loved working on the Oleander animatic! The Phoenix was especially fun to animate, and of course the hug made all the hard work worth it haha. And awww yes! I love that edit too, it uses an audio from Gotham Knights where Batman is talking about Nightwing and how proud he is of him. As soon as I heard it I knew it would fit really well with a good timeline Dadneto, and I was definitely inspired by my fic The Hardest Part Is Leaving You which I had finished not long before making that edit!
Oh yeah, the effects in Dark Phoenix are actually pretty solid (at least most of the effects surrounding Jean and the Phoenix at least). Would have loved to see more of the X-Men as an actual team as well, but alas, the writers have robbed us of that yet again 😭 Guess that's what we're here for lol.
And OOOH Anon I love that idea! Definitely not too much, I think that's a great mix of angsty and intense but also heartfelt! And yes, a shorter timeskip between Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix is always appreciated haha. That's such a fair point about Peter being afraid of Erik when he's in 'Magneto' mode too. Usually I write them post reveal so I mostly play around with the concept of what their relationship is like after many years of bonding and trust has been built, which means Peter is rarely if ever scared for himself, but more likely scared of what Erik could do to others in the case Peter ever got hurt. Younger Peter would definitely struggle with that though I bet!
Thanks for sharing your ideas with me Anon, I love hearing them! If you ever turn them into a fic let me know, I'd love to read it! :D Have an awesome day!

Audiovision Blog Post week 9
1. Research (technical, academic, creative practice)
I have begun further looking into the implementation of ambisonic audio in relation to vr capabilities. Following one of the previous weeks research around Ableton's ability to incorporate ambisonic audio into a vr video, I found a lot of problems with this as it is not a software that is specifically effective for it.
I have now decided to look into an alternative way to do this through Adobe Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro offers a much wider range of vr implementations, specifically around ambisonic audio.
youtube
This tutorial I found on youtube runs through how to layer vr video and stereo audio properly. In the following week I aim to further complete its implementation following my resolution of sound design and score. This method of implementation incorporates the mapping of left and right panning in relation to the center of the video, therefore changing the direction of where the sound is coming from based on head rotation.
I have also begun looking into field recorders and finding one that is within my price range as I plan on purchasing my own one for future projects.
I looked through various sites and reddit pages to decide which one would be the best value and it seems the tascam range offer a lot of great options. I ultimately think however, I will stick to what devices rmit has for offer to rent at the moment as these devices are still out of my price range.
2. Reflection
In class we looked at a range of techniques to help drive immersion and draw the viewer in. In relation to my own video the idea of space vs energy plays a big factor in the consistency of my sound design. At the moment I feel there are sections that contain either too many conflicting sounds (the beginning section of the video) that take away from the initial immersion, as well as too little towards the end of the animation. I plan to balance this out as well as think more over prescriptive affect vs ambiguity in my score. In my score I feel that prescriptive effect is necessary in establishing the core emotion and that I have been quite effective in that so far, however its implementation within the opening sequences and how that transitions is still not quite that effective.
The pacing of my score also stays relatively consistent at the same bpm throughout. I will try and create a bit of variation through temporal control in order to slightly shift the lanquidity of certain sections. (a bit faster in the flashback sequences to reflect their age and lifestyle contrasting their present slow and old state)
In regards to the dream sequences, and more specifically the transitions between these sequences, I want to further push the chaotic affordances around my sound design. As the sick old man is perceiving these painful health spikes and coughing fits, I feel like this opens a window to allow more interesting and almost abstract sound elements. This will further accentuate the harshness of these episodes while also better contrasting the calmness of the flashback sequences.
3. Progress
My partners have given me a rendered scene from the animation within the vr formatting. This has allowed me to get a much better understanding for the environment and elements within the scene that I can articulate on. Due to this scene being from the middle section of the video I didn't spend too much time layering the sounds and mainly reused sounds from my previous animatic sound design as a lot of the elements stayed consistent.
I also plan to begin recording a lot of my own sounds in the coming week following monday's class, going through the processes of recording so I have a better understanding around how to do it properly. I have no real experience in recording my own sounds to a high quality, whilst thinking about factors such as gain staging, level balancing and environment setup. I hope that I am able to do this in conjunction with receiving the final animatic for the animation.
My partners are working very hard to try and complete it to the best of their ability, this is so I have an accurate source to work off and finish designing before I hand it back to them to make sure everything is to their liking.
This is the current progress of the short render that they have provided:
youtube
I am still having a bit of trouble working around the new formatting of the video, however am pretty confident I will have it all figured out in the coming week.
I have also continued working on my sound spotting in regards to the new animation render as there are both new and removed sounds that were not in the previous animatic. I still plan on integrating the use of the fluorescent light as a melodic motif used to transition the scenes. with the light being a key visual element in the composition now, this helps better involve this technique as the previous animatic did not even have the light visually present.

Final Spring Update: Motus Mentis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, this is it, the end of my Stevens Institute of Technology undergrad art journey. Motus Mentis was a huge success! Not only were there a lot of people from Stevens but the alumni from last year came too, as well as my Mom and my friends from high school. It was definitely surreal seeing all these points of my life collide together in this one room and it made it a bit overwhelming to try and socialize because of how many people I wanted to talk to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll be real, I finished the animation 30 minutes before the doors opened. I had something presentable beforehand but I felt like there were still a few things that needed to be tweaked or were missing. The morning of Motus Mentis I woke up super early to do the credits and an entire cut from scratch, that means I sketched it, timed it, outlined it, colored it, and drew in the background all the while also trying to dress and prepare myself for the exhibition. It was the cut where Dillon turned in his bed, at first I thought I didn't need it but as I kept playing that scene back over and over while working on the sound it felt like we switched between the brain room and the bedroom a bit to fast, it worked but I felt like the timing could be better. When I got to Monira I was just working on a few more timing things such as the 3 zoom-ins on the TV towards the end of the animation. I didn't like how I timed it initially and exporting those was annoying because of them being 3 separate layers that had their own image sequences. I also was able to find some elementary school background noise for the presentation memory which was bothering me constantly that this scene sounded too quiet. Anyway, I was able to make all the adjustments I wanted before the doors opened and a lot of people liked it. They said they found it funny and relatable which is a good thing since that was what I was going for. The most common question I got was how long it took me to make the animation, which you can find out from reading this blog but all of March was the actual animation part while half of January and most of February was the animatic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What was a major shocker for me was the VHS tapes. I had almost zero confidence that this aspect of my project would be a success because of how much pushback I would get during the critiques. At most, I thought that I would have maybe 5 participants but I ended up having 27, probably even more cause some told me they only did one memory. They were also really glad that I set this up because it made the project feel a lot more personal to them, a lot of people told me that as they were watching they couldn't help but to think about what their most embarrassing and happy memories would be so it was a great way to express themself in the moment. Some of them would even come up to me and tell me exactly what they wrote, mostly they told me the embarrassing memories rather than the happy ones so I'm glad I was able to help people be less nervous about talking about this topic. And for any future Stevens students reading this, this is a great example of if you have an idea that you genuinely think will do great and believe it will tie everything together then you should fight for it despite what others may say.
youtube
My mom recorded a few videos of the opening day.
youtube
If you haven't already you should definitely check out Bedtime on my YouTube channel. The only difference in this version is that after the Special Thanks the card doesn't read "FEEL FREE TO STEP OVER TO THE TABLE ON THE RIGHT AND REMINISCE ON SOME OF YOUR OWN MEMORIES" and then it would loop back to the beginning.
Tumblr media
Great way to wrap everything up.

Okay I think I have the basic idea for the animatic and just need to storyboard
Idk how to do that
alright so get your audio imported and than theres a few ways to approach
ummmm ill use my kirby storyboard and charlotte animatic for examples ( i can find more examples if youd like too :3)
scattered tips and rambles under the cut nfsdkja
so i tend to only include the base poses for movement in my animatics and i also keep my sketches like, quick and simple, one thing thats visible in my kirby one is that i didnt keep the backgrounds consistent in the storyboard because once i had what i wanted for that sketched out i would switch to focusing on the character animaiton sense i could figure the background out later
i would recomend using minimal layers: it can be helpful to have 2 animation layers though so you can sketch the character movements independant from eachother: however for storyboarding just keep it to one layer
if you need to sketch out character anatomy id suggest doing that after your storyboard: on a second sketch layer, simmilar to how later examples of my kirby animatic had circles to keep track of the size and placement of characters, if you struggle with anatomy than try to sketch em more like stick figures or with less lines to keep the process simple
if your having trouble conveying a particular movement than it could be helpful to flesh it out further in you base storyboard so that you have it more figured out later on, but for the most part dont worry about the actual animation just the base poses
sense you havnt animated before id focus more on just getting your ideas down, if you animate more in the future than its important to study more about character movement and flow and directing the viewers eyes and all of that but for now try not to wory about making anything particualry amazing, i find for me putting to much expectations on an animations result makes the task feel even more daunting ^o^*
however if you want to be more ambitious and start learning some more storyboarding skills i can try to sketch out some guides~
a great thing to focus on now thats simple is just to keep in sync with the music, particularly for actual cuts
theres lot of editing you can do to make an animatic look more animated post production, any camera movemtns (like a slight movement from right to left or a zoom in out, or shakey little effect) dont worry about any of those rn, example of this is in my kirby animatic theres that one clip where theres drawings being shown and you can see how the shot isnt drawn to fit the full page: thats cause i plan to do camera movement to pan across the drawing
ummm i would suggest cheking out Jamie De Jonge - YouTube, and •[ Silliest_Light ]• - YouTube, cause there great examples where like, its generally more simple/less ambitous animations but look fantastic, and do a great job of storytelling
my charlotte animatic was done super quick, i did have a sketch layer if i remember correctly but like, it was pretty fast~
for that i just focused for keeping in sync with music and the actual like, framing to convey more emotion, theres only 12 frames in the whole thing actually
another small thing i did there is in the first frame charlotte's arms are like, down resting on the ledge where as in the next clip with her , her pose changed so her hands are on te ledge but her arms are strectched out, given that the action of her goign from the ledge to pushing herself ore upwards is a simple movement and also like, a very diagonal one? if that makes sense i think this pose change helped convey more motion in general despite the motion itself never being shown, i could try to phrase that better if that didnt make sense djnfajsd
all of this is really scattered so im not sure how much help it is but i hope it is at least somewhat neat idk dafkndjf

All the art and animations I'll be working on in 2023!
Hi, everyone! We're entering a big new year, and I'd like to make a few announcements about all the different projects I'm planning to start and release in the coming year! First of all-
College Adventures will have its final season! Not a big surprise, but I do plan to journal my final semester in college to round out the series- it's been a crazy four years and I can't wait to close them off with you all! I already have several episodes planned! One of which being a REALLY BIG INTERVIEW with an extremely famous animator I managed to land!
Fanart for new releases: JoJo Part 9 will release in February, and hopefully Pokemon Adventures will round up ORAS in their volumes, SwSh in their magazine releases, and hopefully start SV soon! Which of course, means more JoJoMon content! And with more Gen 9 announcements hopefully coming this Feburary with Pokemon Day, I miiiight be able to free up some time and ideas for short voiced animatics too! No promises on that one, though. Do expect a lot more Pokespe content this year, though! Will I make a Pokespe Vines & Memes 3? Hmm... not that soon, but not never!
Pokeani content? Probably not, but who knows? Maybe Riko will surprise me, or maybe she'll also have to suffer 25 years of character assassination * shrugs *
The Guardians of the Galaxy marathon and my final moments with the MCU: I haven't formally announced it, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will by the final MCU project I watch, since James Gunn is moving on to DC and I want to end my MCU experience on a guaranteed high note. In honor of this, I plan on marathoning every film or special that the GotG have appeared in (GotG, GotG Vol 2, Infinity War, Endgame, Love and Thunder, and the GotG Holiday Special), and journaling down all my thoughts on every little character moment and easter egg and why I love this particular wing of the MCU so much. On top of that, you know I'll definitely be making tons of fanart for GotG3 when it drops, and I even have plans to make a voiced animatic in the leadup to its release, even if I'll be extremely busy with animation finals at that time- just because I love this series so much.
Wishful Thinking (Animated Short): I'm really sorry for still being so in the dark on this, but even though I'll be finishing up animation on the short before May, due to legal reasons I can't actually put it on Tumblr or Youtube until it finishes making the rounds at film festivals maybe sometime next year. I'll definitely see if I can put together a trailer at least, once I know for sure what the actual release date will be! I really hope everything goes well with this though- It's my biggest project ever and over three times longer than my last animated short, Flo's Cat Chase, so I really hope a lot of people watch it and like it Q_Q
More voice acting content for other people's projects! While these announcements may also take a while to come out, I will say that I have landed several decently-large voice acting roles in other projects, too! I'll definitely post proper announcements for them here when they come out!
The Great Unknown: Since I graduate from college this May, the rest of the year will probably consist of me moving across the country and trying to find a job- no idea how this will impact my content output, but I hope to spend all my time not working or job hunting making more comics, animations, and voice acting bits to expand my portfolio! I'll try my best to expand my YouTube channel during this time, too! Hopefully I can get a bit closer to my dream of becoming an animation showrunner!
