he moves wrong. something about him is just off. his team mates have it within good reason to think of him as some sort of Gotham cryptid.

Azriel's Plotlines

After my acotar series re-read & reading HOFAS. I think that SJM gave us clear plotlines for Azriel. Or at least potential ones for him to tackle. And since I think that Gwyn would be his love interest, I think Gwyn has a clear connection to these plotlines as well. Which I think includes Illyria/illyrians/ramiel, the autumn court, the prison & the valkryies.

This contains HOFAS spoilers by the way!

Illyria/Ilyrians

* SJM introduced the Illyrian plot line early on in acomaf. When we first heard about them we learned that some Illyrians sided with amarantha & had rebellion groups which Rhys, Cassian & Azriel all hunted down & killed, causing unrest in the Illyrian camp.

* In acomaf, we also learned how the Illyrian men treat their women & how it's been a long standing issue. And we know it's still a problem today despite Cassian trying to make progress.

* In acowar, the illyrians fought in the war but in acofas it was clear that afterward they were upset with the bat boys because some soldiers died in the war and didn't get to come home. Causing more unrest. And pissing Azriel off because he said that they trained for that exact reason and he called them hypocrites despite Rhysand trying to show Azriel the illyrians side of things. But it was explained that Cassian help fix the unrest and rebellions in the Illyrian camps and they knew that the blood rite would also help with that unrest in the early scenes of acosf.

* By the end of acosf. It was made clear that the Illyrians weren't happy that the valkyies participated in the blood qualifier and the blood rite. No matter if the Valkyries joked about it, it has been well known that the illyrians take the blood rite quite seriously to the point that they have a law that no one can interfere with the blood rite, not even the damn high lord. They hold that tradition sacred. And there are other Illyrians who lived in the blood rite that can confirm that the Valkyries killed other fellow Illyrians, do you think that will sit well with the illyrians with their twisted views about women? I don’t think so. It’s going to be a future conflict in a for sure.

* From the jump once we were introduced to Azriel, it was clear that Azriel hated the Illyrians. Whereas the other batboys do not. Azriel is an Illyrian whether he likes it or not, he’s going to have to come to terms with it. Because if he hates the Illyrians, then that means in part he hates himself. Which is a long standing issue with him.

* Cassian told us in acomaf, that the Illyrians don't like high fae and don't like it when high fae try to tell them what to do. So the illyrians def don't like the fact that Rhys is halfbreed and SJM didn't fully tackle Illyria through Cassian, despite Cassian being their general and especially since she gave Cassian a plot line of learning to be a courtier. So I think it makes sense to give the plotline to Azriel.

* The Illyrians have rebelled before, toed the line of rebellion in acofas and can rebel again with the events of acosf. The Illyrians can out right refuse to fight with the night court in an upcoming war. They make up majority of the night court armies. If they don’t fight, the night court won’t have a standing army.

* I think this connects to Gwyn because she participated in the blood rite alongside nesta & Emerie. Gwyn herself stated that the Illyrians were going to be furious. Emerie, an illryian herself stated they would be in hysterics for decades. I believe there is going to be conflict with the valkryies & the Illyrians. Nesta wants to build an all female unit. Cassian is trying to train Illyrian women. What if nesta starts recruiting Illyrian women?

* In HOFAS, we also learned that Truth Teller was once wielded by Enalius, one of the first illyrians and the male the illyrians honor with the blood rite. Another illyrian connection for Azriel. And Truth Teller also came into Fionn’s possession, who was prythian’s first and only high king. Theia stole the blade from Fionn’s dead body.

* We know Azriel’s shadowsingers abilities came to him when he was locked in a dungeon at his fathers estate and his father threw him in the camp at the age of 11 after he recognized Azriel’s abilities so either he found that knife somewhere in illryia or the NC or somewhere completely different. Hopefully we find out.

Ramiel

* In acofas Cassian said ramiel always felt alive somehow, awake.

* In acosf, Eris said that “Unsurprisingly, the Illyrians were never curious enough to see what secrets lie beneath Ramiel. If it, too, was carved up like the others by ancient hands.” Why does Eris of all people mention this?

* In HOFAS, Vesperus, the Asteri told Bryce, nesta & Azriel while they were are the prison isle, that the asteri hid pockets of their power around the lands and asked have they looked at the bottom of every sacred mountain, at the roots. We all know the 3 famous sacred mountains in prythian. Ramiel, the mountain in the middle, and the prison itself. Which Eris also confirms in acosf.

* In acosf, when we got the daglan’s backstory, we were told that the asteri/daglan were rushing to get to the top of ramiel due to that black monolith on top but Enalius held them off. In acosf, we found out that the black stone is able to teleport & heal the people that touch it. Gwyn & Emerie found themselves in a parlor at the river house and they stated that they think the stone knew where Gwyn and Emerie were needed most. So did the daglan/asteri thought that the stone will transport them home? Or at least to another planet they could infiltrate.

* It’s been highly speculated that the 3 stars that are the insignia of the night court are the names of 3 daglan/asteri. Or it could be names for the first Illyrians. Who knows. Hopefully we find out more on that.

* Also, the Illyrians are the only ones permitted to be on ramiel & the illyrians aren’t even allowed to be on ramiel until the blood rite. And the blood rite is the time the Illyrians have powers. Why? And if that rule is in place, then I just know the illryians are definitely mad that nesta and Gwyn participated in the blood rite since they are not illryian.

* But I definitely think there’s something under ramiel. It’s been hinted at too many times that something is there. It hasn’t been explored enough. Especially with the rule no one is permitted on it until the blood rite.

Gwyneth Bedara

* As people already know, I think Azriel’s love interest/mate is Gwyn of course. SJM dropped too many hints and used the same wording for mates in the Crescent City series when it comes to gwynriel.

* I think the two would be a friends to lovers story.

* Gwyn would be a perfect counterpart to Azriel’s pov.

* Gwyn has been in the library since acomaf when it was mentioned that sangravah was raided. She said she’s tired of living in the library and she finally came out of it when it came to training on the top of the house of wind. And she was fully away from the house of wind when she went to go comfort nesta at emerie’s house & when she was forced into the blood rite at the end of acosf. But despite learning to be a warrior, finally coming out of the library, SJM had her go back into the end, after Gwyn said their stories are worth telling, do you really think her story is going to end with her permanently staying in the library? I hope not.

* Gwyn has been described as glowing and having crackling energy, so we don’t know what powers she possess, so hopefully we find that out too.

* A big arc for Gwyn will be definitely just getting out of the library and I would really love to see how her journey will go because she really deserves to live a happy life after all she’s been through.

The Autumn Court/Beron

* Besides the night court, the autumn court was the second most talked about court in acosf, to the point where Eris made several appearances throughout acosf.

* In acowar, the night court agreed to support Eris’s claim to the throne when the time comes. To the point that Eris suggested that Rhys kills Beron before the war even started. At the very end of acowar, in text it stated “Eris continued by as if he hadn’t heard it, but didn’t sneer at least. Rather—he just nodded at Rhys. It was silent promise enough: soon. Soon, perhaps, Eris would finally take what he desired—and call in our debt.”

* It’s clear that Beron has become a huge problem and a huge liability to prythian. In acowar, he didn’t want to fight with the rest of the courts against Hybern. And now in acosf he’s aligned with Briallyn and is looking to align with Koschei.

* Beron is so much of a problem that Cassian said “But no one had been able to decide which was the bigger threat for them: Briallyn and Koschei, or Beron’s willingness to ally with them.” Beron is so much of a problem that they were trying to decide who was worse Briallyn & Koschei or Beron.

* In acosf, Eris also confirmed that Beron wanted to take over Spring Court lands. Quite honestly, Beron is the one who is putting the Spring Court into danger. No one else wants spring court lands. Autumn and Summer are the two courts bordering Spring. The others don’t have the direct chance to take over spring because they have to go through summer and autumn. Tarquin is too good of a male to try to take over Spring. He even took spring court citizens in during acowar.

* Eris also told us this at the end of acosf “My father is furious that his ally is dead, but he’s not deterred. Koschei remains in play, and Beron might very well be stupid enough to establish an alliance with him, too. I hope that whatever Morrigan is doing in Vallahan will counteract the damage my father will unleash.” Doesn’t it sound like Beron once again is going to be a problem?

* With Eris wanting Beron gone, it’s quite clear that Eris doesn’t want to do it himself, that’s why he keeps encouraging Rhys to do the dirty work. But wouldn’t Azriel be a perfect candidate since you know he’s a spy master & torturer? He can easily do it with Eris helping him get into the forest house and without it coming back onto Eris and the Night court.

* In HOFAS, Einar, aka the autumn king, wanted to use Bryce to go to prythian. I think it’s obvious that Einar is distantly related to the Autumn Court in prythian. Despite knowing the autumn court was formed after the fae went into Midgard and left prythian. Both Einar and autumn court residents have the famous red hair and the fire power. Then the way Einar and Beron are just alike. Like why would Einar label himself as the autumn king?

* We know that Bryce & Ruhn are starborn because of their father’s bloodline, and if Einars blood line is from the autumn court blood line, or related to it. Who’s to say that anyone in the autumn court in prythian couldn’t also have starborn power?

* Now Gywn has a clear autumn court connection. Her grandfather is an autumn court male & her mother was born in the autumn court. Which I think that’s where both Gywn and Catrin were born. But I think that Gwyn’s grandmother is from the spring court. Gwyns mother was given the chance to be with her mother’s people in spring or be in the forest house of autumn. We know beron is the oldest high lord. We know that he has a say about who comes and goes into the forest house but gwyns mother was given the option to stay in the forest house. Coincidence? I think not.

* I think sangravah is in autumn; the spring court didn’t have a standing temple around the time that Gwyn & cartrin were conceived and born. The Spring court temple was being rebuilt early on in acomaf before it was even stated that the temples were being sacked, Feyre mentioned this. Rhys nor Feyre ever mentioned sangravah when Rhys went to go visit the temple in Cesere multiple times in acomaf & acofas and Rhys only mentioned that one of their temples got sacked for the cauldron foot. Not 2. So I don’t think sangravah is in the night court. Plus it wouldn’t make sense to hide 2 cauldron’s foots in the same court. Plus Lucien also identified sangravah rugs in the house of wind in acowar. Lucien has never been to the night court before acowar, so he either had to see sangravah in spring or in autumn. And since spring didn’t have a temple, it had to be autumn.

* It’s not a coincidence that SJM connected Gwyn to autumn and then expanded on autumn in acosf. I’m wondering will Gwyn go back to get closure on Catrin’s death or if sangravah is even still standing.

The Prison

* Essentially, I think the prison is definitely something that nesta will deal with. But she’s close friends with Azriel and Gwyn and Azriel was there when they learned about the history of the prison.

* Like after reading HOFAS, SJM already left us clues about the prison in acosf. One meeting between Cassian, nesta & Eris showed that, this is what Eris had to say about the prison. “We don’t know why they exist, but do you not find it strange that two out of the three sister mountains have underground palaces carved into them?” “I’d hardly call the Prison a palace,” Cassian cut in. In HOFAS we found out that the prison was in fact a palace at one point. The question is how tf does Eris knows this when the prison gates are keyed to Rhysand’s blood?

* In HOFAS, Bryce, nesta & Azriel go to the prison and find out that it was once a palace which turned into a horrible dark prison to hide 1/3 of Theias star, just how the entire island of Avallen turned gray and dead to hide 1/3 of Theias star. When bryce took part of theias star from avallen, the land turned fresh with life. When she took the star from the prison, she instantly left so we don’t know the outcome of the prison isle.

* But Bryce herself thought that after she left the prison that it too turned back to what it used to be, a fresh island full of life. We also see at the end of HOFAS, baxian called Bryce and hunt to let them know that Pegasus were on Avallen like days later. And they appeared out of no where. Who’s to say Pegasus aren’t going to pop up at the prison now since they belonged to Theia? And we all know that Pegasus are connected to the valkryie in lore. The way SJM had the valkryie talk about miniature Pegasus in acosf and even had the house of wind conjure one for them is not a coincidence.

* Then Helion has 7 pairs of Pegasus, the holy number across sjm’s universes.

* Bryce told nesta to figure out why nesta had the 8 pointed star on her back and gave her the starsword. If Pegasus are going to live there wouldn’t it be perfect for the prison isle to be a valkryie base? @bookofmirths theorized on it and I totally agree. Nesta said in acosf that she wanted to be the general of a female unit.

* I connect this to Azriel because he was there when they found out the history of the prison, he’s still teaching the valkryies, and he’s like 1 of the 4 people that is closest to nesta besides Cassian, Emerie and Gwyn.

* Now the real question is what the heck is going to happen with the creatures in the prison if the isle did transform back to its original state?

* I think nesta in the end will be ruling the dusk court as a valkryie general. The dread trove is connected to the prison and it literally answers to nesta on command. And she now has the starsword. Tho I highly doubt it if she keeps it since she has Atraxia. But I think nesta will def need help getting it together as a valkryie base and like I said, since her and Azriel are good friends I can see him helping her. And we all know the valkryies are going to be right there by her side.

The Valkryies

* Since I think we’ll get a gwynriel book, it’s no brainer that I believe that it would include the Valkyrie.

* Their story is not over. SJM didn’t make the valkryie a major acosf plot point for nothing.

* At the ending of acosf SJM made it be known that the Valkyrie are still training with Cassian & Azriel’s help.

* There are only like a handful of valkryies, I really believe that SJM is going to have more women join the valkryie unit.

* I honestly think SJM is prepping the acotar world for another war with koschei or maybe with the continent. She wouldn’t have nesta wanting to be in charge of a unit of females for nothing. And then further giving nesta more plot development in HOFAS was very deliberate. Honestly, if nesta didn’t already have her story, I would think her book was next.

The shadows

* they came to him when he was locked up in his father’s estate when he was a child & they’re the reason his father threw him in the Illyrian camp finally, to train at age 11.

* I think it’s kind of clear that Azriel’s shadows are sentient

* We know they don’t like sunlight and when they’re hiding him, it can only be when it’s dark.

* They talk to him.

* They are his spies.

* But we also learned new information about them in HOFAS, the fact that they can detect when a person is lying & they cannot turn solid like how Cormac’s shadows were.

* Also it’s clear that the shadows like hearing their favorites sing. They dance around them 😂

Mor

* Mor said that she wanted to come train with the valkryie when she comes back from over seas and I think this gives the perfect opportunity for Azriel and Mor to finally have a mature conversation.

* I personally don’t believe Mor has to out herself to Azriel but I think she will let him know that she never felt that way about him and it was never because something was wrong with him.

* I do think that Azriel has lingering feelings for Mor but I don’t think he’s in love with her any longer.

* Personally I tbink also SJM can build up Mor and Emerie as well, if she decides to go that route.

Azriel's family

* in acofas it was hinted at that Azriel’s mom was still alive and he was going to give her a winter solstice present. And who knows how often he goes to visit her.

* In acosf, Cassian questioned why Azriel’s mom never came to the house of wind library to stay, and we all know what priestess lives there.

* In HOFAS, in the Walmart bonus chapter, Azriel also revealed that his mother is anything but awful.

* From Azriel’s backstory we learned that he had 2 older stepbrothers, his father and step mom and how they all neglected him and abused him. Rhys said they punished his brothers and what we have seen so far I don’t think it was ever confirmed whether his “family” were dead.

Pen Rants About Fantasy BNHA Fics For Too Long

Aight people, I'm sharing the same thoughts on here I did on twitter but with more to add because twitter won't let me rant long like I can on here.

its "pen talks at length about fantasy au's and fanon around said established au's" so I'm a huge nerd for fantasy au's if the original story isn't fantasy and I'm even MORE a nerd for it if one of those characters becomes a shapeshifter or something. With BNHA it already has a kind of canon au where horikoshi literally made a fantasy au ending sequence and I remember all the hype for it back when it came out and that love for it resurfaced recently because... again... I'm a nerd for it.

But one thing i've noticed fantasy fics do often is they kinda just... don't do the leg work with what it means to make a whole new world with magic and lore. they just assume the reader will read "oh they're a fae" or "oh they're a dragon" and get it which... pls dont do. There's a lot of fun that can be had figuring out legistics of how magic and creatures look and work and I get it if that isnt your cup of tea but if you have a fantasy world... you gotta usually do some extra work with it.

So fanon has this thing with bnha where whenever they write certain characters, they kinda automatically are always the same across the board in various fics. which is fine, I appreciate consistent headcanons, but when it comes to PORTRAYING those headcanons... I get bored. There are only 2 FICS (if you wanna know which I can toss them your way) that I have read for fantasy au which both actually do leg work for the world and put thought into how these characters work and out of the literal thousands (over half just being plain boring smut because they are just weird and horny) it bums me out.

One thing that seriously gets stunted is Bakugou as a barbarian which... what would that mean in a fantasy world? not many fics go into that but they def go into it more frequently than some of the other concepts. I just think there's more that can be messed with there. Like, what kind of culture did he grow up in? how did he meet Deku? did they still grow up with each other and if they did how? are they from the same villiage? Horikoshi's art makes it seem like they were born in different cultures, so how would they have met? would their interactions still be the same if they didn't grow up together? there are a LOT of questions to be asked with interactions I think

It's even WORSE with kirishima tho. He is a dragon in some fics, part dragon in others, but they hardly ever go into the logistics of what that means for him. They never touch on his culture or how people treat him or ANY ANGST and as an angst lover with my favs it suuuuucks. Kiri in general has hardly any well-written long-form angst and I'm starved for that kinda content. Also, when people write dragon Kiri they always, ALWAYS introduce him to Bakugou by him somehow being captured (I wrote him that way too but its mainly for a specific situation to happen and a scene that's been stuck in my head for ages now so I'm calling myself out) but then, they do that to him and expect him to... what be fine afterwards? Tangent but not many people write good angst for my boy and I'm DEPRIVED.

but anyway, I think there's more that can be done with some of these concepts. like if Kiri is a dragon, would he still breathe fire? If so, how would he use it? if not, why/how does he work? Can he shapeshift willingly or is he forced to or does he need outside assistance like a ritual or something? is his hardening just his scales, in which case if he's in dragon form and has his hardening magic is that just a special ability he can do to make his scales harder? there's a lot about shapeshifting that can be messed with as well! (both those fics i mentioned before have major consequences if Kiri doesn't shapeshift frequently and I love it).

In general, I feel like people see the au with these characters and just don't think of the nuances and it bugs me. And then the fandom also has fanon about it and some of the tropes are tired... so I started thinking about scenes around fantasy au and ye a lot of what I'm deciding to do with it isn't really... how I normally do it. like there's thought into what I'm imagining because it's me we're talking about but world-building I'm leaving a bit up in the air and to be interpreted however.

anyway, thanks for coming to my Rant-talk lol, if you have fantasy au fics that are long form, arn't constant smut, have kiri or bakugou angst and good world building I'd love to hear recs. the two fics I was talking about are:

the (I think discontinued) fic Blood Of My Hand by PurplePersnicety - its about Kiri being captured by humans and possibly sold but his fire got locked away and he can't shapeshift, while an exiled Bakugou is a barbarian who has a problematic goal and the two make a blood pact to try and help the other and then shit hits the fan And the currently still updating fic, Wandering Home by Milligramme - Kirishima was raised in a human town and told to hide his beastly traits when one loud blonde shows up, tries to steal and then eat said stolen lemons before the two decide to travel together and help Bakugou return home and Kirishima figure out what he is.

oh ya theres a lot of gods!! a lot of em are canon to official 5e DnD stuff, but some are my DM’s own characters! one of them is actually a player character (played by my friend, not me) from the last campaign, which ended about 200 years ago in-world! and yea some of them are def way more hands-on than others, usually ones with fewer followers? i assume? tbh in both campaigns we’ve had a little more experience with fey, which are different immortal magical beings. they’re very tricky but i think theyre very cool too!

they do that thing of taking ur name like fae in old folklore irl, and theres 2 player characters in the party with their own connections to that world, so its become a funny bit that they ask for an NPC’s name and ess’ira goes “don’t answer that.” to the NPC or “No.” to his party-mate, he’s considered a buzzkill for it in-world, which i think is hilarious

thank you!!! like i said i go hard about this kinda thing. he’s so fun!!! i love messing with him especially, since he’s so snooty etc. so he just like. has little character moments of handling something and then grimacing and wiping his hand on his pants, and once he straight up fainted at the end of combat bc it was so stressful, after acquiring zero physical wounds. he’s such a damsel i wanna shake him like a dog toy, he’s so funny to me

fun fact: he’s a horse girl (gender neutral) bc he grew up with his own horses yknow, as a fancy lil rich boy, he misses them dearly. so he just has moments of speaking softly to and braiding the manes of the party’s two horses that pull their cart

which is why he owns those riding pants, which are part of the outfit he’s usually in! more so bc he likes how they look tho lol he doesn’t expect to be doing a lot of horse riding at all, he just wont let me draw him in pants that arent high-waisted

I think what got me into twst was def was in 2019, I was on YouTube and I saw this video Otome Ayui I think translating twst and I was hooked okay then @broken-synchronicity came thru with Lost in Translation and it was over for me okay

I did have a lil hiatus in 2020 to late 2021 (I'm talking around May) and I honestly wasn't planning on being so active but something shifted as soon as I posted my lil story.

My fave dorm is Savanaclaw, yes I'm pulling an Epel, but it needs to be said bc Ruggie is by far my fave character there bc he just resonates with me.

An unpopular opinion of mine would have to be a whole post within itself but I'll give two:

Sebek's very much heavily mischaracterized because of his slow development which i chalk up to him being part fae, he's very arrogant towards those who he doesn't respect and his human peers which ends up distancing him from the first years (which is why Vil calls him a Cucumber instead of a potato)

And two: Trey is actually terrifying. Like he's in the leagues with Jade and Rook bc so many ppl over look his sadism in favor of him being the perfect lil male wife when it's been shown that he does get irritated/uncomfortable with people being too dependent on him— mostly because he's got that "average guy" thing that Jamil has going on but we at least know that's not the case for snake boy.

But if he's so average, how did he get accepted into a school of villains?

Uhhh, sweet, which why I side eye Sebek and Trey sometimes.

Pacing. The pacing of Savanaclaw and overall wonky writing still makes me upset since Octavinelle, Scarabia, and Pomefiore (ignihyde hasn't finished so I cannot say) were all somewhat cohesive, some theorize that Savanaclaw isn't truly over but.....

I'll probably rwork my own lil Savanaclaw fix it but for now It'll remain in the drafts.

I don't really play phone games as much as I wished to (i haven't logged into fgo in a whole month and I just uninstalled obey me to free up space for twst). Subway surfers is always a safe choice tho.

I absolutely think Yuu has more agency this time around, and I'm glad to see it. I wonder where Chap 6 will take this new found energy or if its just until Yuu gets Grim back—

Also, I really enjoy Grim, he's the cat son I wish I had, very much a baby and reminds me of my lil sis. I'm hoping to see character growth tho, can't have the Great Grim learn nothing after all.

Hi Sarah! My friend and I are starting a bookclub (as much as you can with two people who aren't pressed for deadlines) and I was wondering if you have any recommendations? (That is if you have time to rec anything!) We're starting off with Deathless and have Fitzgerald next in line somewhere but I def want to try to expand the genres we read and tbh from years of following you, I trust your judgement

I don’t...like giving recommendations? At least not directly, it seems like too much opportunity for getting it wrong. Everybody has their own tastes, after all, and even the best of friends don’t necessarily vibe with what you vibe with. (I’ve experienced this with multiple friends, so I know what I’m talking about.) Truly, one of the reasons that my whole “I’m going to get back into reading for pleasure!” push has been so successful is that I only bother with books that interest me, and stop reading when they fail to catch my attention.

But I’ve now read at least 60 books in 2020, which is approximately 60 more than I’ve read in the years prior, so I’m happy to share that. Below is my list of recent reads, beginning to end, along with a very short review---I keep this list in the notes app on my phone, so they have to be. Where I’ve talked about a book in a post, I’ve tried to link to it.

The Secret History, Donna Tartt

Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn (here; loved it! I can see why people glommed onto it)

Swamplandia!, Karen Russell (unfinished, I could not get past the first paragraph; just....no.)

Rules of Scoundrels series, Sarah MacLean (an enjoyable romp through classic romancelandia, though if you read through 4 back to back you realize that MacLean really only writes 1 type of relationship and 1 type of sexual encounter, though I do appreciate insisting that the hero go down first.)

The Bear and the Nightingale, Katherine Arden (here)

Dread Nation, Justine Ireland (great, put it with Stealing Thunder in terms of fun YA fantasy that makes everything less white and Eurocentric)

The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson (VERY good. haunting good.)

Tell My Horse, Zora Neale Hurston (I read an interesting critique of Hurston that said she stripped a lot of the radicalism out of black stories - these might be an example, or counterexample. I haven't decided yet.)

The Rose MacGregor Drinking and Admiration Society, T. Kingfisher (fun!)

St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell (some of these short stories are wonderful; however, Swamplandia's inspiration is still unreadable, which is wild.)

17776, Jon Bois (made me cry. deeply human. A triumph of internet storytelling)

The Girl with All the Gifts, M. R. Carey (deeply enjoyable. the ending is a bittersweet kick in the teeth, and I really enjoyed the adults' relationships)

The Door in the Hedge and Other Stories, Robin McKinley (enjoyable, but never really resolved into anything.)

The Hero and the Crown, Robin McKinley (fun, but feels very early fantasy - or maybe I've just read too many of the subsequent knock-offs.)

Mrs. Caliban, Rachel Ingalls (weird little pulp novel.)

All Systems Red, Martha Wells (enjoyable, but I don't get the hype. won't be looking into the series unless opportunity arises.)

A People's History of Chicago, Kevin Coval (made me cry. bought a copy. am still thinking about it.)

The Sol Majestic, Ferrett Steinmetz (charming, a sf novel mostly about fine dining)

House in the Cerulean Sea, TJ Klune (immensely enjoyable read, for all it feels like fic with the serial numbers filed off)

The Au Pair, Emma Rous (not bad, but felt like it wanted to be more than it is)

The Night Tiger, Yangsze Choo (preferred this to Ghost Bride; I enjoy a well-crafted mystery novel and this delivered)

The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula Le Guin (unfinished, I cannot fucking get into Le Guin and should really stop trying)

The Ghost Bride, Yangsze Choo (enjoyable, but not nearly as fun as Ghost Bride - the romance felt very disjointed, and could have used another round of editing)

Temptation's Darling, Johanna Lindsey (pure, unadulterated id in a romance novel, complete with a girl dressing as a boy to avoid detection)

Social Creature, Tara Isabella Burton (a strange, dark psychological portrait; really made a mark even though I can't quite put my finger on why)

The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins (slow at first, but picks up halfway through and builds nicely; a whiff of Gone Girl with the staggered perspectives building together)

Stealing Thunder, Alina Boyden (fun Tortall vibes, but set in Mughal India)

The Traitor Baru Cormorant; The Monster Baru Commorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant, Seth Dickinson (LOVE this, so much misery, terrible, ecstatic; more here)

This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone (epistolary love poetry, vicious and lovely; more here)

The Elementals, Michael McDowell

Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (didn't like this one as much as I thought I would; narrator's contemporary voice was so jarring against the stylized world and action sequences read like the novelization for a video game; more here)

Finna, Nino Cipri (a fun little romp through interdimensional Ikea, if on the lighter side)

Magic for Liars, Sarah Gailey (engrossing, even if I could see every plot twist coming from a mile away)

Desdemona and the Deep, C. S. E. Cooney (enjoyed the weirdness & the fae bits, but very light fare)

A Blink of the Screen, Terry Pratchett (admittedly just read this for the Discworld bits)

A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine (not as good about politics and colonialism as Baru, but still a powerful book about The Empire, and EXTREMELY cool worldbuilding that manages to be wholly alien and yet never heavily expositional)

Blackfish City, Sam J. Miller (see my post)

Last Werewolf, Glen Duncan (didn't finish, got to to first explicit sex scene and couldn't get any further)

Prosper's Demon, KJ Parker (didn't work for me...felt like a short story that wanted to be fleshed out into a novel)

His Majesty's Dragon, Naomi Novik (extremely fun, even for a reader who doesn't much like Napoleonic stories)

Three Parts Dead, Max Gladstone (fun romp - hard to believe that this is the same author as Time War though you can see glimmers of it in the imagery here)

A Scot in the Dark, Sarah MacLean (palette cleanser, she does write a good romance novel even it's basically the same romance novel over and over)

The Resurrectionist, E. B. Hudspeth (borrowed it on a whim one night, kept feeling like there was something I was supposed to /get/ about it, but never did - though I liked the Mutter Museum parallels)

Stories of Your Life and Others, Ted Chiang (he's a better ideas guy than a writer, though Hell Is The Absence of God made my skin prickle all over)

Gods of Jade and Shadow, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (fun, very much a throwback to my YA days of fairytale retellings, though obviously less European)

Four Roads Cross, Max Gladstone (it turns out I was a LOT more fond of Tara than I initially realized - plus this book had a good Pratchett-esque pacing and reliance on characterization)

Get in Trouble, Kelly Link (reading this after the Chiang was instructive - Link is such a better storyteller, better at prioritizing the human over the concept)

Gods Behaving Badly, Marie Phillips

Soulless; Changeless; Blameless, all by Gail Carriger (this series is basically a romance novel with some fantasy plot thrown in for fun; extremely charming and funny)

Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Marlon James (got about 1/3 of the way through and had to wave the white flag; will try again because I like the plot and the worldbuilding; the tone is just so hard to get through)

Pew, Catherine Lacey (a strange book, I'm still thinking about it; a good Southern book, though)

Nuremberg Diary, GM Gilbert (it took me two months to finish, and was worth it)

River of Teeth, Sarah Gailey (I wanted to like this one a lot more than I actually did; would have made a terrific movie but ultimately was not a great novel. Preferred Magic for Liars.)

Mexican Gothic, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (extremely fun, though more trippy than Gods and the plot didn't work as well for me - though it was very original)

I think YES) and Clarke is the human that wandered into the Faerie realm. Originally has a lot of Flarke but honestly paints Finn in such a terrible manner that I’m not even mad. Again, features some super amazing angsty smut.

tlh theories: sweetie, necromancy never goes out of style

and BOOM just like that there are less than six weeks left until we finally get to read chain of gold!

to celebrate (read: bc i finished rereading tda and now have no form of distraction to keep myself from obsessing over the newest/second oldest generation of herondales, carstairs, blackthorns, lightwoods, and fairchilds) i’m compiling a list of all of my theories- from the well thought out to the seriously cracked out- for the series, more specifically chain of gold! i’ll be sharing a new one every friday until the release date for chain of gold!

2: once a necromancer, always a necromancer: why malcolm fade will raise jesse from the dead

my second (possibly third, definitely fourth) least favorite tda character will play a role in cog2 and tlh. yup, malcolm fade is back. BOOOOOOO! but i have to admit, his (disgusting, unwanted, horrible) presence makes sense, especially considering parts of the series are set to take place in cornwall- where, if you remember, malcolm was raised alongside the love of his life annabel (definitely my second, but possibly my third least favorite. there’s too many horrible people in tda!) he and annabel grew up together and fell in love sometime in the very early 1800’s (for reference tid takes place in 1878 and tlh is set to take place in 1903.) annabel was also presumably killed around this time as well. malcolm says in lady midnight that he spent a very long time believing that annabel had gone to become an iron sister before finding out from faeries what had actually happened to her. NOW, we know malcolm already had a spell from the unseelie king to raise annabel, AND that he hated the blackthorns w a passion for murdering his girlfriend, but just bear w me for a minute whilst i explain. first things first, let’s say annabel died sometime between 1810 and 1815-making her 18-21 years old at the time- that would mean if malcolm finds out just before or during cog2, it would have been about 90 years since annabels death. that’s a long ass time to think someone you loved isn’t actually dead. now that malcolm learned the fate of his #soulmate4eva he needs to be able to bring her back. SO, we already know malcolm has experimented with necromantic spells before the events of lady midnight, that’s how he killed emma’s parents, but i’m willing to bet that was nowhere near his first time dabbling in necromancy. in fact, i’m gonna say his first BIG necromantic spell will have a lot to do w a certain boy ik i’m about to fall in love w (jesse blackthorn.) that’s right. malcolm fade is the warlock that finally agreed to help tati bring back her beautiful baby boy. ik, ik, malcolm HATES blackthorns w a passion few have ever possessed. he tried to kill a seven year old ffs, i get it. but still, wouldn’t it make sense for him to prepare to raise a dead blackthorn by raising another- less important- dead blackthorn? he def would not want to fuck it up when it comes to raising annabel from the dead, but if something is wrong w jesse when he comes back? who cares? not malcom, he hates blackthorns so that would be an added bonus in his eyes. everyone has also been speculating about fairy involvement, especially since the prologue was released. who, may i ask, had help from the hbic of the unseelie court? (king arawn basically clocks in at number six on my least favorite list) anyways malcolm learned the spell to raise annabel from the unseelie king, and who’s to say that some unseelie fae wouldn’t have assisted in bringing tsc’s newest mystery boy back to life? not to mention, if tatiana is in possession of the black volume, there would be little malcolm wouldn’t do to get it from her. including agreeing to bring jesse back in exchange for the book. i also know he doesn’t end up getting it, but do you honestly expect tatiana to actually hold up her end of a bargain w a warlock? as if! i’m like ninety-nine percent sure fade will be the one to raise jesse from the dead, and tati will screw him out of whatever she promised in return, further solidifying his hatred of the best, most lovable shadowhunter family of 2012

OH MY GOSH I read all four books of the Red Queen series and honestly it doesn't get better. I guess the narrative/writing was really nice but the books are a little slow paced and boring. I liked parts of the second, a chunk of the third, and completely hated the fourth book. I actually liked the first almost entirely (though it's not a favorite of mine) but if you found it dull definitely don't read more. RQ aside, what sort of newer books DO you like, read, or want to read?

I definitely wasn’t planning on reading (well, listening) to the rest of the series because the first just. wasn’t my thing. 

HOWEVER books I do like (and this is why Red Queen caught my attention but ugh)… I like court/royalty romances, fantasy, forbidden/secret relationships, enemies to friends to lovers…..I’m still holding on to YA fiction, but I am also starting to look into just Adult fiction, because there are a lot of YA books that I’m just too old to enjoy.

But as for like, actual books I like

The Cruel Prince (and the Wicked King) by Holly Black: Yeah this is that other thing I talk about a lot on this blog aside from Lucio. The first book is probably my favorite book. Ever. And I only read it in September. 

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas: I’ve read the first three books (not the midquel she released but maybe once its on paperback) pretty recently and I really enjoyed the first two. The first book in the series is definetly my favorite out of the bunch because I’m such a sucker for Beauty and the Beast stories, okay?

The Selection series by Kiera Cass: This is my biggest guilty pleasure series. I know it’s kinda dumb and also not the most well written but I read it in like, 9th grade so it makes me nostalgic and I just. Love that. 

Captive Prince trilogy by CS Pacat: Oh boy can I even talk about this? Please don’t attack me- these books are so good, even with the problematic elements. Like, you def have to have a strong will/stomach to get through them because there is so much triggering material, especially in the first book, but this series is the EPITOME of enemies to friends to lovers and a slow burn. 

So. Books like that. (Fantasy especially the fae is my big thing I love because I love the fae and so wholeheartedly believe in them and love reading good books about them. I also love vampires but I’m very particular about my vampire lore/books, so it’s hard for me to find books that don’t annoy me. Yes I still stan Twilight.)

A/N: Hey guys! Finally, I finished this chapter...took me a long time, mostly because I didn’t feel like it was good. Like, at all. But, I’m sort of happy with it now, even though it’s still very bad lol. So John is kinda OOC? He’s def more...aggressive? But I wanted a soft boi John, so that’s what you’re gonna get ;p Also, I’m aware he uses a tattoo gun usually, but??? The carved sin aesthetic called to me. He and Joseph carved their sins, and cross them out once they overcome them, so if he was trying to romance her then?? He might do this?? Don’t judge me.  I know I said this was supposed to lead to must, but I’m not sure now? I like where I ended it. Maybe if I find the inspiration, I’ll write another chapter, but as of rn, this is the last one. Let me know what you think!

His thumb stroked her jaw, pressing lightly into her throat. Felt her pounding heartbeat beneath his fingertips. Regarding her thoughtfully, John leaned closer, pressing his nose to her hair and breathing. Maggie let her eyes close, enjoying the warmth his body gave off. He dragged his lips to her ear, making sure she felt every movement.

He implored her to confess. To reveal her deepest, darkest secrets, no matter how petty. No matter how small. To rip open her ribcage so he could see the tangled mess of sin that lay beneath.

And she did.

She breathed out everything she could think of, pouring her heart between stuttering breaths, focusing only on the man in front of her. It was as if a weight was being lifted from her shoulders; Maggie found herself rambling more and more, sharing more of herself than she’d ever imagined she could. His gaze remained fixated on her, as if nothing else existed. It stirred a warmth in her gut that burned down to her toes. The attention positively ached, and yet, she never wanted him to look away. So she divulged her soul, hoping to keep those blue depths on her for just a bit longer. She confessed her greed. Her sloth. Her pride.

When she reached lust, Maggie hesitated. John tilted his head, licking his lips. As if he could taste her sins. He chuckled in response to her silence, gently stroking her cheek. Leaning closer, John nudged his nose against hers, warm breath fanning over her face.

She didn’t need to vocally confess her sin; it was written all over the way she moved, the goosebumps spreading across her flesh, the whimper she let out as his grip tightened just slightly against her throat. But he made her anyway. Eagerly awaited the words he knew would fall from her lips. Maggie whispered how she’d felt about him from the moment they’d met; how she’d dreamed of him every night since. Every unholy thought she’d ever had was voiced for him to judge.  His resulting groan made her toes curl, watching as his eyes darkened.

“I know your sin…”

His voice must’ve dropped an octave, a mere growl compared to his usual cocky tone. It took everything Maggie had not to moan aloud; although, at this point, she might as well have. There was nothing she could hide from him. Not now.

His lips brushed against hers as he spoke,

“At first, I thought it must be wrath, or envy...but now, I see. Your sin...is lust.”

A shudder ran down her spine. Of course it was. She knew he was right. He could see right through her. And oddly, she didn’t mind. She wanted him to see her; to weed out her sins and lead her to the salvation his brother had promised. It terrified her. But he knew that too, grazing his nose across her cheek, delicately running his thumb along her jaw.

Laying his palm flat against her sternum, he paused for a moment, relishing in the pounding of her heart.

“But that’s alright.”

Slowly, deliberately, he dragged his hand down her front, between her breasts, stalling just above her navel. Pushing away from the tree, careful not to move too far from her body, John’s other hand gripped her wrists. With a steadiness she envied him for, John raised her arms above her head, pressing just a tad harder than was necessary; she could feel the bark digging into her skin, sure to leave marks.

“Pain is the gateway to forgiveness. Only after you’ve been punished for your sins, can you be cleansed of them.”

Leaning in closer, John almost snarled into Maggie’s ears,

“You will leave your hands where I have placed them. Do not move until your atonement is complete. Am I understood?”

The authority in his tone gave her chills. She knew exactly what he wanted to hear, and unlike last time, she didn’t hesitate to give it to him.

“Yes.”

The growl he released was more of a moan, and Maggie could tell he was enjoying this more than he let on. One look down would’ve told her for sure, but she didn’t dare. Instead, she held his gaze, blue eclipsed by his blown out pupils.

“Are you ready, Maggie?”

Gasping her confirmation, she watched in fascination as a wicked grin found his lips, falling to his knees in front of her. It took her breath away; she had to dig her nails into her palms just to keep her arms steady.

Maggie was so caught up in the sight of John Seed, on his knees before her like she was the altar he worshiped at, she nearly missed him reaching back, retrieving a small knife.

She flinched at the snap the blade made as he flipped it open, breathing escalating in a mixture of fear and pure excitement. This was it. She would be free. She would be pure. He would lead her to Eden, where she would finally be free from her sins.

God, when had she become this person?

Slowly, as not to startle her, he lifted her shirt, letting his fingers graze her skin the entire time. She’d never considered herself sensitive, but Jesus she could tell her jeans were absolutely soaked. If he noticed, he didn’t mention it. Letting the fabric bunch around her waist, John skimmed his palms along her hips, catching her gaze as he popped the button of her jeans with a flourish.

Maggie’s knees trembled. With a calculated leisure, John slipped his long fingers into the band of her jeans, tugging at them to reveal the patch of skin just above her panty line. It was pure torture. And god, the look on his face as his eyes devoured her skin, his own excitement evident in both his expression, and through his pants.

A soft sigh slipped past her lips, eyes fluttering closed as his touch warmed every inch of her exposed flesh. Maggie could feel his breath against her navel with every exhale, and it was driving her insane.  

It was the cool touch of metal that snapped her, briefly, from her daze, a spike of fear stabbing her heart. What was she doing? This was absolutely psychotic; and yet, she couldn’t move her arms, her breath caught in her throat as the blade just grazed across her skin. As if sensing her unease, John pressed a chaste kiss against her hip, sending her hurtling back towards that fuzzy state of mind.

“Shhh, pet, you’re alright. This is going to hurt, okay? But I know you can handle it, I know you can find redemption...I believe in you, just trust me…”

The first incision wasn’t as bad as she’d feared. A hard sting, sure, but something she could deal with. However, the moment he began to drag the knife down, slicing her skin like it was butter, she could help but cry out, biting down on her lip so hard she tasted blood. John never stopped speaking, muttering praises as he went.

“You’re doing so well, little lamb, barely even moving, I'm so proud of you, pet…”

He gave a brief pause between letters, allowing a short reprieve for her to remember how to breathe. He must’ve been looking at her, but Maggie’s eyes were screwed shut, digging her nails into her palms. She refused to move her arms down, determined to finish her atonement. To make John proud.

The next letter was just as bad as the first, if not worse. She could feel blood dripping down her legs, staining her jeans red, even as John attempted to control the blood flow. Still, she didn’t move, gritting her teeth to the pain.

This was by far the worst one, the blade twisting into her flesh to form the correct shape. She couldn’t help the screams escaping her throat, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.  He was trying so hard to be gentle, always praising her, a firm hand holding her hips to the bark.

“We’re almost done, you’re being so good for me, pet...I knew you would be perfect, I'm going to take such good care of you…”

The euphoria she felt as the last letter was carved surprised her. She was still whimpering, trembling from shock and dizzy from blood loss; but it felt good. She was freed.  John was immediately by her side, pressing a cloth to her fresh wounds, gently lowering her arms to rest around his neck.

Maggie could barely hear him as he continued murmuring in her ear, something about salvation? She could've sworn he mentioned walking through Eden's Gate together, about exploring the new paradise side by side. The thought made her heart flutter, even as her eyes slipped shut.

Encouraging her to hold the makeshift bandage, he bent, sweeping one arm under her knees while tightly gripping her waist. Maggie had no will to fight, nuzzling gently into his neck. He was so warm… she could've laid there forever.  Something in her addled mind warned her she might not have a choice in that matter.  It was too faint to be sure. Dismissing the thought, Maggie breathed in John’s scent,  mumbling what she hoped resembled a ‘thank you ‘.

She might’ve imagined his smile. Some part of her slipping subconscious might’ve convinced her that he’d pressed a meaningful kiss against her temple. But there was no way she could mistake his words, the sound echoing in her head as sleep overtook her.

“Let’s get you home, pet…”
