Admittedly not the most period fabric choice, but sometimes we get to put the "creative" in SCA :P I debuted this at the Blue Feather social at Lilies a couple of weeks ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tunica is a linen gauze and the beads on the sleeves are little moonstone clouds, for maximum cuteness.
The belt was brand new and made for me by a talented and awesome friend.

The necklace I made a while ago. I like the idea behind the rainbow chains and stuff that have been going around, wanted a more period option for myself. I've never seen an example in this kind of color configuration, but the general design and all the stones/glass are period for me.

Quick project the last couple of nights: refreshing a very old banner! This banner was a former baron's personal banner in a rectangular Japanese style. I saw the crunchiness of that paint job from *across the fucking room* and offered to fix it up to use as decor for our coming crown tournament!
Pics 1 through 3 are side 1. The first two are when I'd just barely began, the second is the "after" photo.
Pics 4 through 6 are when I was so proud of finishing side 1, picked it up, and said "shit it's double sided". I had my painting lines to go off of, so it went quicker!
I legit love fabric painting. And not to toot my own horn, but I consider myself pretty damn good at it.

Hello friends~
I know it's been a moment. Between going to college full time and COVID hitting the world, it hasn't been as easy to create content. I did take two classes specifically to improve my future skills in social media marketing and in video editing.
This video that I am sharing with you today is my final for my video editing class. I am very happy with how it turned out.
I hope you guys enjoy~

[ Image descriptions: the first image is of a snowy yard and street.  An oak tree spreads its branches over the sidewalk, which has been cleared of snow.  There are lumps of snow on either side of the road, left by the plow, that reach approximately 2ft (.6m) in places.  The snow has been cleanly shoveled in the immediate foreground and shows how it drifted up there: it’s probably up to almost a meter (3 ft).  The second image is of several items on a green-patterend background: a very small seax (a straight blade with a drop/clipped point), its handle wrapped in brown leather, resting against a brown leather holster that’s been stitched with thick tan sinew.  Next to it are two pottery cups, one in a dark greenish-gray clay incised with geometric patterns that have been glazed white, its inside glazed with purple glaze.  The other cup is a simpler tan clay cup, undecorated, with its interior glazed in dark maroon glaze. Lastly, a shawl pin in copper wire that has been arranged in stacked figure-eights to form a diamond shape, and then hammered flat.  It’s secured by a straight pin made out of copper with the end fashioned into a coil and hammered flat. End ID. ]
Recent doings
First image: We had snow where I’m at yesterday.  I wanted to call it “a blizzard” but I realize that’s my San Diego self talking.  It is icy on the roads, though.
Second: I’m working on developing a set of implements and belongings for my SCA persona, and to my delight my mini-seax arrived yesterday. It’s all of about 6″ (~15.5cm) long, and I’m going to dangle it from my belt for use at meals.  I’ve been trying to find hand-made things for this, and things that are realistically period for my persona (who is late 900s Anglo-Saxon) -- given that things are justifiably higher-priced because they are made by actual craftspeople, building up the kit will take some time (for the things I don’t make myself).  But I think it’s worthwhile to do so, whenever I can actually afford it.  There’s been regular discussion here about the impact that mass manufacturing has had on our general ideas about what things should be worth, a generally negative impact, since the stuff you can find on the shelves at your local BoxMart carry no information about what it took to make them, their components, the time it took, etc.
For more on that, let me link to a delightful video by Bernadette Banner in which she’d found that one of the zillions of CHICV or CHICV-inspired “stores”* was using a photograph of her, wearing her own hand-made, hand-stitched, bespoke-tailored dress, to sell something that was, as it turned out, not her dress.  I’ve posted about this before, but it’s so wonderful, it bears repeating.
* CHICV International is a company that specializes in creating a Web presence for a whole host of “clothing” “stores”, and you’ll see them all over Facebook (I always report them when I see them).  Their photos are of absolutely amazing clothes -- this is because they’ve searched the Internet for actual craftspeople’s photos of things they’ve made (they’ve stolen plenty of photos from people on Ravelry, for example) -- sometimes photoshopped to show the clothes in different colors, and the prices are suspiciously low.  It’s because here’s how it works: they put up the photos.  If you purchase an item, they then send the photo to a garment factory.  It is now up to the clothiers in that factory to Figure It Out from the photo.  Something like upwards to 4 months later (if you’ve purchased something that was, say, bespoke-made by hand by an incredibly talented Bernadette Banner), you will get a mostly-polyester knock-off in the mail, constructed as inexpensively and as swiftly as possible, because the person at the sewing machine probably has another stack of photos to Figure Out.
Anyway, here are the sources for the stuff I bought:
Mini-Seax: Olde Town Smithy, on Etsy
Pottery: Lobster Rose Pottery, on Facebook
Shawl Pin: Nicholas & Felice, also on Etsy
Not pictured: my bone nålbinding needle, which I promptly misplaced upon its arrival. I’m sure I’ll find it when I’m tearing the house apart looking for something else.
I should have an update on Vicar Max’s Pocket Watch sometime today or tomorrow.

I AM ANXIOUS AND THATS OKAY
My coven sisters and I are joining the temple hierarchy of a prominent local oracle so we can learn from her at a high level. I’m mostly nervous because for the last ten years in my witchcraft I’ve been solitary, and have been taught by personal research, online classes, or having another practitioner of magic show me how to do a specific skill. This is the Ivy League of learning magic. It also puts me out of control, which is okay because I need to learn how to let other people be in charge and trust those who are trustworthy. Am I apprehensive about this? Absolutely. There’s every chance in the world I’m being taken in by a cheat at best, a cult leader at worst. But I’ll be keeping my wits about me and healthy, open skepticism in my back pocket at all times. Ultimately I think this will be a good thing, even if it doesn’t go my way, precisely because it DOES scare me. In other magic related news, my friend made me a bronze ritual dagger with an oak handle that I need to smooth out and apply linseed oil to (if anyone knows more about woodwork and what oak likes to maintain its strength and lustre, please let me know).
SCA related stuff for a sec keep scrolling if you’re not a history nerd, Gulf Wars in the kingdom of Gleann Abhan is coming up in two weeks and I am getting LIT. Pre-registration for camping fee? Paid. Road trip plan? Engaged. Packing and garb repair? Putting that shit the FUCK off but it’s fine everything’s fine. Chieftains in my own kingdom is this weekend, pretty damn excited for that. Gonna do some music, take some classes, drink good wine and eat good food.
Mental health wise, I’m pretty determined to not just pull through this recent slump but rise above it. I’ve started taking vitamins again, washing my face in the morning and night, taking care with my appearance, and eating enough. Showering frequently is still a struggle, but I’m keeping my body clean and plaiting my hair to distribute the oils and make it look nice. I’m going to try making my bed in the mornings, a habit I’ve never had much success with but whatever. I’m dancing and doing yoga to keep my body from becoming stagnant, journaling, actually folding my laundry for once, hanging out with people, and searching for an appropriate therapist/counsellor/psychiatrist/psychologist for when my insurance is applicable. Every day is a struggle, but I’m really proud of myself. I haven’t self harmed in a year and almost four months despite multiple urges and weak moments. I have to trust that my efforts will be rewarded by eventual stability and the ability to take joy from the moment.

It’s never the wrong time to share more photos of my most-beloved project to date. Photos by Edward Hauschild.
[Top image desc] Two young women in white veils and two plaits, wearing flowing medieval gowns with long sleeves, turned toward each other as they walk down an aisle in a school cafeteria, with other people in medieval garb filling the seats. The woman on the left is wearing dark red trimmed with silvery white, with semi-circular sleeves and a shorter hem that shows her white chemise, and her braids are wrapped in white ribbon. The woman on the right is wearing green-gold trimmed with scrolling gold oak leaves, with rectangular sleeves and a long hem, and her braids are plain.
[Bottom image desc] A young woman in a white veil and two red plaits, wearing a flowing, green-gold medieval gown trimmed with scrolling gold oak leaves, with rectangular sleeves and a long hem. The sleeves are lined in bright peach, and her hands are clasped in front of her, obscuring the narrow, long gold and red belt.

Stars
Tangled up with the body of her lover, Arvanna laid in a pile of cushions. “Tell me what you dream of,” she whispered, her lidded eyes locked to his.
“I did have a dream recently,” he murmured.
“Tell me.”
“I remember a sky full of stars…” His gaze wandered heavenward.
Arvanna’s shoulders began to pin. “Yeah?” she breathed.
“And you were there, putting them all to shame.” He met her eyes again.
She felt the heat of her flushed face. Calontir had always known exactly how to talk to her.
Thanks anon and sorry so late! This one had me stumped! One-word drabble prompt here.

So today I started holding fighter practice at my home again. Ite the first practice I have run since I get jumped by a laurel who thought I was taking glory away from her husband. I have decided to help new fighters and keep my brothers fighting. We started out with slow work and working on foot work. It's a small group so we could work one on one.

Hi Friends~I wanted to share a fellow SCA website. He explains some different fighting techniques with visuals! It is centered around Calontir's style of fighting, but I'm sure many of the tactics are useful to others.
