Morgiana’s Meta
Slight edit. This started as one post about Morgiana and the Fanalis.
Which I’ve now realized was too long and not digest enough, so I separated the halves, even though both analyses are intrinsically linked. For the second part about the Fanalis, go here. There’s also new content in this post, so if anyone who’s familiar with the old version wants a re-read, it’s worth your while!
I’m not anything close to concise, consider this your only forewarning, it’s going to be long. For those not intimidated by a deep dive, onward we go!
Morgiana is one of my favorite characters, which is why the deep injustice of what happened to her development in Magi still haunts me to this day. To examine why and how, let’s dissect the manga.
Morgiana’s introduced as what I’d call a case study for the horrors of the setting; she’s a slave.
A slave which cannot be freed solely through the efforts of our kindhearted deuteragonist because the problem is too complicated to simply be resolved by an act of goodwill.
Then she’s revealed to be an antagonist because she is a slave of Jamil and the man is a sadistic entitled man child. However, we’re clearly shown that Morgiana is the best of a bad lot in the way she laughs at Aladdin impersonation of Jamil, being humanized, or the way she decides to tell him the truth of Alibaba’s fate.
During her fight against Alibaba in the treasury, we’re on tenterhooks because she can so easily hurt him and Alibaba doesn’t want to defend himself by hurting her because he understands her position.
That’s why he is trying to talk her to his side. In his mind, the dungeon is a place outside of the world (true) and so the rules are different. They’re no masters and no slaves.
Except that, again it’s more complicated than that. Morgiana’s chains aren’t only the shackles at her feet but mental chains as well. It’s why Goltas breaking them physically and metaphorically by talking to her is so important.
Goltas may have killed under Jamil’s orders and consider himself too broken and too guilty to ever enjoy freedom, but that’s not the case with Morgiana. Making sure she understands that is capital.
It’s also why Magi is one of my favorite manga.
The attention given here is priceless. It’s a herald of things to come and set the expectations quality wise for what will follow in terms of character development.
In a series like Magi was shaping up to be, it was essential that Morgiana’s experience as a slave be addressed and given the starting point of recovery.
The bar is placed very high right from the start, let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint...
After that episode, we’re informed of what Morgiana got up to in the six months timeskip. She starts to recover from her time as a slave by working for and being welcome in, Leila and Sahsa’s caravan.
Morgiana’s still plagued by nightmares, but Goltas’ ghosts and his dying wish for her bring comfort. This arc is then appropriately titled Morgiana’s arc because it focuses on her still very much present trauma and the start of healing from it.
When she hears of slavers on the caravan’s route, she goes to hunt them down. It’s good because even if her decision is a mistake (she goes after a band of thieves alone without warning anyone) it’s significant in that she acts without asking, thus demonstrating initiative and agency.
There, in an isolated cell, there’s a little girl too. One who’s an echo of herself at the same age whom she inadvertantly terrify with her recollection of what life as a slave will be like, when the girl asks her about it. Of course, once Morgiana realizes that, she hurries to swear that she’ll save them both.
By saving this girl, Morgiana will save herself.
But it doesn’t go according to plan. Morgiana calls for a doctor and medicine when she realizes the girl is burning up, only to be told an useless slave will be fed to the wolves hyenas.
She’s once again chained, helpless, stuck by doubt and hopeless, about to witness the girl being devoured by desert hyenas. Until Goltas’ ghost appears in her mind and urge her to action.
Underlining that what keeps her from acting is, once again, more of a mental block than a physical one. After that little pep talk though, Morgiana fight through the dangers and manages a magnificent rescue.
All is well that end well.
It’s a damn solid base upon which to establish a character and a promise of glorious things to come, what’s not to like?
Except... not really. What follow will slowly undermines everything that has been established in the breadth of a five chapters/one episode. So let’s tackle that.
The Balbadd’s arc unfolds and we discover Morgiana’s role in the trio’s dynamic. Intensely practical, she’s here to pull their heads out of their asses when they both get lost in the clouds and shoulds; ensuring they talk to each other first before coming to conclusions. She’s the support, steady and unwavering.
Combat-wise, she provides the brawn to Alibaba’s brains and Aladdin’s magic. Her enhanced strength has come into play once or twice and we’re shown what her future prowess will look like in the form of Masrur, a fellow Fanalis!
Now it’s getting interesting because it seems that Masrur, among his own trio, fulfills the same position as Morgiana herself. A no-nonsense practical person who can drag the other two by the scruff of their necks if it’s needed, unphased by their antics and theatrics.
All in all, Morgiana and Masrur are shaping up to be pretty similar. Both Fanalis and former slaves and the powerhouses of their respective trio. Temperament-wise, it’s too early to tell if their resemblance is a shared trait in all Fanalis.
Overall, the effect creates parallels and means that Masrur can make a great mentor because he understands her. He even tells her that in his youth he too wished to find other Fanalis in Carthago and that it was a disappointing affair.
That’s our first warning sign.
Another thing of note in Sindria’s arc is Morgiana’s reforging of her shackles into ankle bracelets along with a promise to Aladdin and Alibaba to be their wings. Along with the information that Fanalis have almost no magoi capacity.
Then comes the night of the Mahrajan’s festival, where Morgiana tells the rest of the trio that she’ll go to the Dark Continent but still wants to stay at their side and asks them for permission to do so.
It goes to show that she isn’t used to freedom yet.
But while Morgiana goes on to enjoy the festival, Alibaba and Aladdin have a discussion afterward about their fight against Al-Thamen. Alibaba expresses he doesn’t want to repeat Balbadd’s tragedy while Aladdin offers support, reaffirms their roles as Magi and King.
On its own, it’s not worrying. These two can have things to say without Morgiana having to be here. But with what is to come and how in the previous arc that she was included in all discussions, and the fact they strengthen a dynamic of duo rather than of trio one, let’s consider that our second warning sign.
The aforementioned low magoi capacity comes into play no long after, when they’re in Zagan’s dungeon as she gets them out of the spiked trap, exhausting herself to the point of crying tears of blood.
It is, for now, a trump card and to use only as a last resort.
It’s telling in its own way. Morgiana’s new ability, which should broaden her skills is in fact, limited because of her nature as a Fanalis. Constrained by it. Uh oh. Is anyone else hearing warning bells?
It is now time for the World Exploration arc, otherwise known as the one where Ohtaka begins to hammer in the nails in the coffin.
To start with, just in numerical terms, she already loses out. Having but one chapter for her entire character arc. Let’s that sink in. The World Exploration arc gives us plenty of new info about Alibaba and Aladdin... but not Morgiana.
Moreover, because she has only chapter to make an impression, a lot of info is crammed into a narrow timeframe. To sum up...
Morgiana arrives in Carthago only to find ruins but spurred on by the locals’ talks of Fanalis beyond the Rift, heads there. She tries to make her way across, stumbling on Yunan’s cottage on the way. He confirms Fanalis are alive on the other side and tell her it’s impossible to come back once she has crossed over, while also cautioning her that even were it possible, he wouldn’t help her.
So the Rift is a literal void and a one way ticket too? Let’s make that our third warning.
And then we don’t see Morginana again until 50 chapters later, in an arc that has only 64 in total! On top of leaving us hanging on an emotional moment. We have no clue as to how she took this info or whether she grappled with the decision at all. When it should’ve been the focal point of her character arc!
She has wanted to go home ever since we were introduced to her! Visions of her homeland in Carthago were all that kept her going under Jamil’s torture. All that ensured that Morgiana was still a person at the end of her time in slavery rather than a wreck!
It has the fundations of a classic need vs want realization, one which should’ve been the crux of her character arc. But not only wasn’t it shown, it’s not even considered as something that could have happened! Morgiana is now so far from Ohtaka’s focus that her arc literally wither away.
That’s the fourth and final warning sign.
As for her reappearance at the end of the Magnostadt arc... Let’s compare one last time to Alibaba. Though he too, is absent half of that (24 chapters in all) and  only enters the fray of the war in Magnostadt toward the end, once Reim’s troops have been deployed, we know he is on the way because it’s shown.
There’s no such indication for Morgiana. It’s not shown or even hinted at. We’re just hanging in limbo. Was it worth for the sake of a dramatic entrance? No.
Entirely because whatever dramatic entrance she could’ve had is smashed apart by the fact she arrives alongside the rest of the Seven Seas Alliance, and as a result is completely overshadowed.
As if that wasn’t enough, her new mastery of her household vessel is an established fact. (Training montages? Don’t know them. Except Ohtaka does, she showed us Alibaba and Aladdin’s, if only partially for the former).
__
Though we have now explored more than enough material to prove my point. There are a handful of noteworthy events later on which reinforces it.
The confrontation of Hakuryuu where they don’t bring her along because it’s clearly a two vs two fight. Or how Morgiana is once again sidelined when Sinbad finally loses his marbles as foretold and enacts his global suicide scheme.
Yeah, she didn’t have the special rukh or whatever, but Sharrkan and Kougyoku don’t either and they still show up to try and convince Alibaba to stop.
As for the confrontation and fight against Hakuryuu, if I wanted to be charitable to Ohtaka, I’d say that Morgiana was sidelined because of a discrepancy in power levels or because she envisioned that as a fight between Magi and their respective King Candidate.
However, Ohtaka drained away all of my goodwill for aforementioned reasons and other still to come.
If it was a question of power disparity Morgiana could’ve still been brought along, then occupied with the problem of Hakuryuu’s brainwashed goons. Which could have been great because it’d have forced her to rethink and strategy, reconsider the effects of the strength she prides herself on and which is part of her identity.
Because her present enemies are not in control of their actions, like slaves but worse, because there’s no awareness. In this hypothetical turn of action it could have served as a reminder of her time in slavery while also serving to highlight the shortcomings and limitations of a brute strength approach.
But alas this is not what happened. She is just sidelined again, and then we’re told by the narrative we should continue to care because of the goodwill brought by the narrative earlier and the interest we cultivated in the beginning.
Which, to be fair, works to some extend.
It’s just not what I would have expected for one third of our protagonist trio.
Otherwise, there’s another handful of signs obvious in hindsight. Considering the downfall and diminished importance of Morgiana in the narrative.
The place where Morgiana goes in search of relatives, community, and culture? It’s empty, ruined, and ransacked. But when she pursues one more lead out of desperation because she’s dissatisfied since there were no answers there, what does she find?
Literally nothing.
The Rift is a void that extends as far as the eye can see, to beyond the horizon. It seems like someone scooped out existence itself and left nothing in its place.
Let me put that in more words.
The place Morgiana has been searching for, her home and the hope allowing her to hold on while she was devoid of agency and freedom and rights, it doesn’t exist anymore. And the road to the rest of her kin is a blank space.
That’s when the problems get really obvious and unavoidable.
If Ohtaka consciously wanted to make a more transparently clear statement about what she thinks of Morgiana's character, she couldn’t have topped that.
Adding in the disregard for Morgiana’s training that we weren’t privy to, or the fact that both Alibaba and Aladdin could make connections but she was deprived of them just drives the point home.
Alibaba has the Yambala gladiators, with Shambal Ramal and Toto, Aladdin has Titus and Sphintus, forming another trio with fellow magicians.
Who does Morgiana have?
The one Magi who’s lived so long he tried to cut all of his ties to humanity and couldn’t be bothered to look like he cared for his last King Candidate.
That’s a bounty!
But I lied earlier, you know what the very first warning sign was, in hindsight?
The Morgiana’s arc itself.
First pertinent observation, neither Alibaba nor Aladdin have an arc of the manga named after or solely dedicated to them and it’s telling of the fact that they’ll continue to grow along with the rest of the cast and plot. But not Morgiana.
Because Ohtaka couldn’t leave it well enough alone considering the plans for Magi, the issues of her time in slavery had to be addressed, preferably sooner than later. But instead of looking at this arc as a starting point for her character where Morgiana begins to heal from her time in slavery, it is considered an over-and-done-with affair.
The Morgiana’s arc in the manga is five chapters long and in Ohtaka’s mind, enough for the third member of the trio.
It also explains why poor Morgiana seems rather static and sidelined compared to the boys. Her character was driven in a corner narratively and then left here. It didn’t matter that there was still plenty to be done with Morgiana if only Ohtaka cared, because she didn’t and that’s the entire problem.
But I also think this is tied to who or rather what she is. Morgiana is a Fanalis, a race, a people, that was targeted and thus decimated by the slave trade for their physical capacities. That matter a lot given how the Fanalis are treated in canon.

“Character A didn’t love Character B because they hurt them” discourse is truly terrible because it assigns a moral value to love that simply does not exist. love doesn’t actually mean anything about someone’s character. it doesn’t make someone’s actions toward another any better or any worse, it doesn’t prevent atrocities, and it doesn’t prevent abuse.
love is a worthless emotion when it comes to morals because it simply holds no bearing on them. true love doesn’t exist. there is no better or more pure version of love. in the end love doesn’t mean anything. it’s a non-emotion. it’s the child of passion and affection and dedication. doing something bad doesn’t preclude a feeling of love, because a lack of love isn’t a requirement for immoral actions, and morality isn’t a requirement for feeling love.

Thing I hate:
Situations that are a character actively misrepresenting themself, their thoughts, or an event are labeled as a Misunderstanding, either within the work or fandom
Like this might be the neurodivergency speaking but why would it be anything but Lying By Omission if a person does something which is normally done for One Reason, the other person believes they did it for that One Reason, and the first person knows this and does not correct them
It's only a Misunderstanding if both people Believe they understand the situation in the Same Way, but in Reality understand it in Different Ways
If the first person tries to correct them and it doesn't work it becomes a Failure To Communicate, still not a Misunderstanding

Ghost of fries and Hero of cookies part 2
All work words count: 14 593
Words in this part: 1 794
Summary of whole work: Duke wasn't expecting to wake up from his quick rooftop nap to some meta kid with fries. He also wasn't expecting kid to stay Or Danny asked Dani to stay safe while she was in Gotham. Where would she be safer than under the wing of local hero? And he looked like he needed bad day combo anyway
This part summary: Of new names and teasing
Beta read by @audhumla-sailor though English is second language for both of us, so proceed with this in mind. I also know all of the charaters through fics alone, so probably ooc. Stay catious if it's something you don't like
First part
Duke knew that Dani was in their agreed meeting point, he even vaguely knew where she was floating but not much more. She used her invisibility, which was weird since she knew it didn't work correctly on him. It was fifth time they met, of course they knew.
"Hey Signal, remember how you said that I need a codename if we're going to hang out in future and that all my previous ideas were horrible names?" a disembodied girly voice asked. Duke smiled. Ever since he raised the idea, the girl would come up with ridiculous names to be called, proposing them with absolutely straight face. It was expected from someone who thought Dani Phantom was a good alias. It didn't make her ideas any less amusing.
"Of course I do. Whatcha got for me today?"
"Alright, since you don't let me be a name stealer, I decided to take a sheet from local nightlife's notebook–"
"You mean take a leaf from their book?" He was sure she was rolling her eyes on him, but it didn't stop him. No one could maim English language like that with him around.
"Whatever. I chose to steal their idea and became a bird. It's only fair since I can actually fly!"
"Can't exactly disagree. So, what did you get this time?"
"You'll like that, I promise. But now, I introduce to you…"
Duke got ready to shut down every Robin iteration and all Birdgirls he could think of.
"HOOPOE!" Dani yelled, popping back to the visible spectrum. She was covered in bright orange cape with weirdly shaped hood and flimsy mask "I even did some costume changes to fit the name better–" in all honesty, one, yeah, he wasn't blind he realized, two, he needed a moment to remember how these birds looked (his first thought was 'wait it's a thing?!'). But then he got it and yeah, those were funny little creatures, just like Dani. It fitted her "–so even if you don't like it, it doesn't matter," she added, sticking her tongue out.
Duke patted her on the head. He was there, he knew it mattered.
"It's a great name Hoopoe"
Dani visibly though probably unconsciously, relaxed. Her mouth curved into a proud grin and her aura brightened. Normal auras didn't do that. He got used to Dani surprising him like that sometimes.
"Of course it's great, I made it."
Duke chose to not remind her about almost two dozen times she came up with absolutely not great names or about the fact that technically she didn't quite make this one either. He wasn't in such a petty mood. Maybe in future if he needed blackmail.
Oh, it was such a Bat thing, wasn't it? He needed to spend some more time with his civilian to get it out of himself, he liked his ability to interact with normal people in a healthy way.
*
"Wait, is your mask a paper?"
"What else could it be, titanium?"
"If you stop three muggings on the next three patrols each I'll get you a better one, okay?"
"Hey, my mask is perfectly fine"
"Yeah, but it can tear too easily. I can get you a mask that is more sturdy."
"Aha."
"It's the same material every Robin and Nightwing wear…"
"Don't care, my mask is flawless"
"..."
"Okay, better mask would be cool"
***
On the third patrol Dani joined, about a week and a half ago, they exchanged numbers. Duke knew how hard it was to come to terms with new powers on one's own and God strike him with a lightning or something if he ever lets anyone go through similar bullshit. Especially since she didn't seem to have anyone taking care of her. Girl her age shouldn't be able to hang out or respond to messages within ten minutes at any given time. Only twice she didn't do that, because she was on a celebrity hunt for autographs as she later explained. He would be teased endlessly if any Wayne or their associate learned about it, but he considered introducing Dani to Bruce. She needed help, okay?! He didn't inherit adoption tendencies.
But he hadn't done that, partially because he didn't want to scare Dani off and partially because of fear of teasing. And bet. Because of course in the meantime somehow there happened a bet.
He smirked at the video Dani sent as a response to the hydration check. She was tossing a coin and playing an elimination game to pick one juice from eight drinks she had. Steph jumped over the back of the couch to join him. At the start she was in front of him so to do that she had to run around the furniture but such minor inconveniences couldn't even wish to stop her dramatics.
"You're smiling at your phone ergo you either text your secret girlfriend/boyfriend/enbyfriend or watch memes. Show me the memes," she demanded, nudging him in the arm. Duke chuckled.
"Wrong guess. I'm texting my sidekick," they agreed it would be a funny way to introduce Dani to people who asked. Duke tried his best at this whole having sidekick thing anyway. As well as he could without help from other Bats because of this damn bet.
Steph froze for a moment.
"Your what–"
"And the lucky winner is… an apple with mint juice! Damn I really hoped it would be lemonade,"  Dani from the video announced cheerfully before opening the bottle" Shame it didn't make it past semi-finals. Happy hydration break. I'm going on an autograph hunt so I may not respond for the next two hours or so. Wish me luck, bye~"
Duke paused the video before it replayed. He glanced at Steph who finally rebooted.
"How come you got a kid and I learned about it just now?"
“In my defense I'm like 60% sure you're the second person in the family to learn about her. Depends if Tim got his ‘I have to know everything, gotta check body cams’ paranoid spree in the last two weeks or not. There was no teasing from Babs or anyone else if I'm being honest and no lecture from B, so they have no idea.”
“First was Alfred?”
“First was Alfred. I still don't know how.”
“That's our grandtler for you. You are forgiven but you have to tell me everything about her,” Steph demanded excitedly. “And show me the photos''
Duke snorted.
“She goes by Hoopoe and is about Damian's age. She can tell you her real name when B inevitably finds out and tries to interrogate her.”
“What if Spoiler drops by during the day?”
“You can try but give it another week and a day, okay?”
“Why?”
“We have bet that I'll hide her from B for three weeks. Tomorrow is the end of the second week. We both know how he is, he'll have questions if you randomly show up during the day."
"Stakes?"
"Speedster worth of winners favorite Batburger meal, 2 quarts of chosen drink and cookies"
"Valid. I ain't snitch, but I want to know more. Is she a meta?”
"Yeah. Powers I know of are invisibility, intangibility, superspeed, enhanced hearing and flight. Probably more. I think she already had some training with it because she has quite amazing control over this stuff. Like, it comes naturally to her. But her hand to hand is atrocious."
"Are you jealous?"
"No."
"Omg, you totally are! Don't be, she is just a baby with a better idea of what's going on with her powers than you have with yours. There is nothing to be mad about Duke, it's okay Duke–"
"Keep going and I won't tell you anything about her," he dared, trying not to snort.
"Sorry, sorry, you're doing great, please continue," she nudged his arm again "Don't be such softie, dude" He stared at her at the comment, disbelief clear on his face. Steph at least then looked a little ashamed "Okay, sorry. You're honestly doing far better than any of us would. Excluding Cass and Alfred."
"Excluding Cass and Alfred," he agreed easily enough.
"So, you think your kid has some training with her powers," she recalled eagerly.
"Yeah, probably from when she was helping her cousin. He is a hero in Amity Park, Illinois, his name is Phantom. It took very little digging even though Hoopoe does her best to stay mysterious. I swear this kid has no brain-mouth filter. But! I got my second shovel talk from her cousin!”
“The what?”
“After a week of hanging out with her, I got message on Signal’s twitter from Phantom that basically read as ‘I have nothing against you, really dude I’m a fan but here is list of my most powerful enemies, and let me tell you, there were some scarily powerful guys there, I won with all of them, if something bad happens to Hoopoe I can and will destroy you.’ After some research, yes, I think he could try and have considerable chance of success. Even if he didn’t fight would be painful enough to be a lesson. He and Hoopoe have the same powers and she worked with him for some time. She most likely learned then. She was called Dani Phantom, boy went by Danny Phantom then”
“Dear gods, their aliases were so horrible, who even let them go with it?! Are those their first names?!” Steph sounded genuinely offended by it.
“I don’t know,” Yeah, he knew, but he preferred to keep at least this secret to himself ”In boy's defense, because Hoopoe came much later,  he was fourteen and Amity went to shit really fast, so alias was probably not his first concern. And it’s much better than Invioso-bill, name he was given by the press. And he uses some intense gaslighting to make people believe it’s just Phantom now. And allegedly they’re both ghosts. Apparently ghosts don’t exactly have secret identity”
“You doubt it”
“You would too. She eats, she breathes and she is tangible by default. From what I know, ghosts don’t do that”
“They don’t, I checked. I went on a research spree when I first learned about Deadman. I just thought it was so cool you know. Ghosts being real and all,” Steph leaned towards him, almost vibrating with anticipation.
“Really?” he asked, knowing what he was getting into.
“Yeah, you see…”
And on she went, releasing expected infodump as if she waited for this opportunity ever since she first read about it.
********
Some additional name getting shenanigans
Signal: I won't call you Dani in the field
Dani: Why?
Signal: Ever heard of secret identity? Name is, like, half of it. Disguise is other half but it can be exchanged with lore. Superman made it work. Just make up enough lore for people to not question it.
Dani: Oh, okay *gremlin^2 mode activated*
Random they just rescued: And who are you little one?
Dani: *looking them dead in the eyes* I am clone of dead child hero, travelling around the world to find identity separated from my template befre mistakes made during my creation make me turn into puddle of primordal liquid and my conciousness fades forever
Random: *petrified* What?
Signal: *internally* I have miscalculated
Dani: Kid Signal
Signal: No.
Dani: It works in Central
Signal: We're not in Central
Dani: Signalgirl
Dani: I mean, Batgirl exists
Signal: No.
Dani: Monochromatic Signal. Y'know, Red Robin route?
Signal: ...
Signal: Just no. Don't make my name part of your name

Thinking about Zuko's influence on the audience's perception of Aang, specifically in Book 1. I kinda touched on it in this post but that post is pure unsorted rambling in which I didn't get to delve as deep as I wanted. Anyway, the relevent part was:
"With this whole episode, it's just the fact that Zuko is the reason we first get to see just how fucking cool Aang is. It's so easy to be like the others in the show and see Aang for his childish antics and sweet nature, but Zuko is the one that consistently reminds us, “No, this is the Avatar. He's powerful, he's brave, he's fiercely protective, and he deserves respect and acknowledgment for that.”"
Like, I mean, the point is redundant, everyone knows they are foils, so I'm not saying anything ground breaking when I say Zuko is often the one who brings out the best in Aang and encourages him to embrace being the avatar and that a lot of Aang's strongest charater moments are because of Zuko, yada yada, okay, we know, zukaang meta 101, nobody wants to hear it
But also, Zuko's opinion of Aang is so interestingly different from everyone else's. We get a view of Aang from the pov of himself, in which we see his doubts and struggles, the pov of the gaang, through which we see his antics and improvement and flaws. We also understand the opinion of the Fire Nation abt Aang (pure threat that's weirdly small), and we get plenty on the different opinions of the rest of the world.
If you took out Zuko's reactions to Aang, you'd feel like you know pretty much all there is to know about Aang. But to Zuko, Aang is an ever present mystery. The gaang doesn't really question anything abt Aang except what he can do and the rest of their enemies don't care to know things about Aang
But Zuko does. To Zuko, Aang is a source of constant questions, and this is sometimes played as a joke (i.e. "He must be a master of evasive maneuvering." to "You have no idea where we're going, do you?") and sometimes it hits the very core of Zuko's being and changes the course of the plot, (i.e. The Blue Spirit)
Zuko is unique because, to everyone else, Aang is one of two things. A Hero, or An Threat. He is neither to Zuko.
Zuko has no desire to defeat Aang. Aang is not a Threat to him. Hell, as Iroh says, Aang actively gives Zuko hope. But Aang is also not a Hero or ally.
He is neither a protagonist or an antagonist in Zuko's story. He's a goal. And that's such a unique perspective that allows us to question who Aang is from a neutral standpoint. Who is this person who effortlessly escapes trouble while having no idea what he's doing? Who is this person who saves someone they defeated? Who is this person who looks at an enemy and says 'you remind me of my best friend'?
Who else makes us ask these questions?
Through Zuko we, or at least I, see Aang as more than a person, and more than a hero, but as this unconventional conundrum that defies expectation at every turn, baffling and beautiful. Aang is so much more than your conventional hero and nobody sees or shows us that more than Zuko.
My favorite way to look at Aang is through Zuko's eyes.

Oliver Queen had thought he’d seen it all; however this Fenton guy just seems to be full of fun little gadgets. And puns. So many puns.
No one knows anything about the guy other than he’s a mechanical genius. Just magically appeared out of the blue one day with inventions that make Dr. Freeze’s gun look like a toy, claiming that ‘he’s not gonna be here long today but needs to do some field testing.’
And now here's Oliver listening to this kid(it had to be a kid, Fenton didn’t look a day over 14) ramble about how much fun he had today and that he had to come back soon(not looking forward to that). Green Arrow took a good look at the kid.
He was short, maybe around 5’4 without the boots, and didn’t have much bulk, but clearly had a lot of lean muscle from what Oliver could tell from the fight, and black shaggy undercut hair. He wore a red hazmat suit with black gloves and red with black tinted lenses goggles. All covered with a lab coat that is definitely not OSHA compliant for mad scientist children, not with the way it was singed at the bottom and the sleeves had been torn off at the elbow, and the amount of sewn on patches - the biggest being the Fenton logo on his back. He was also lugging around a massive cannon that had Oliver bound to a lamp post with a glowing green net, but nets weren’t the only thing it could shoot, no it shot out so many things within the half hour they had been fighting that Oliver lost count. The kid also had some weird meta biology if the sharp teeth and pointed ears were anything to go on. But Oliver’s thoughts were cut off by a phone ringing. Fenton looked down and started feeling around his suit until he found his phone, a small Iphone with odd attachments with a green ghost case covered with stickers, stopped the alarm and moved his goggles up to rest on his head wincing as the rising sun shined in his eyes.
“Hoo bright. Alright that's it for today I guess! Thanks for playing with me Mr. Arrow, I think I'm gonna pick up some energy drinks and  a couple of snacks before heading home, I still need to write an English paper for Mr. Lancer and Jazz’ll finish me off if I don’t get home soon” Fenton grinned and started to punch in directions for the nearest convenience store on his phone. It was just around the corner from the street they had left the fight off on, nice.
‘Maybe I should grab some for Sam and Tuck’ Danny thought, ‘Oh wait I forgot!’ just as he was about to turn into the store he rushed back to where he left Green Arrow, who was trying to saw his way out of the Fentnet with his knife.
“Sorry! I wanted to do something before I left!” Fenton smiled and put his wiry arm around Oliver in a side hug and pulled out his phone and did a peace sign with the hand around Oliver. “Say Frootloops!”
Fenton pulled off Oliver and showed him the picture, Fenton had a Cheshire cat grin while he had a miserable expression.
“Ooph, probably not your best look but I think we look cool. And really, that’s all that matters at the end of the day. How I think we look.”
“You're a menace, what do you want?”
“You don’t know? I’m god’s playtester and I’m here for bug testing before the rest of the world sees my inventions. Consider Star City my testing sandbox. Anyway see’ya!” and Fenton was gone down the street.
And that was the day Oliver Queen knew that he needed to make sure that the world outside of Star City could never be exposed to Fenton. Especially the bat. If anyone found out his ego would never recover.

Toph & vulnerability - Why she is not just tough
Sometimes I see people describe Toph’s charater arc as basically non-existent, as in she doesn’t change, stable as earth. But I disagree. Her arc may be subtle and in this meta I’ll try to clarify what I think Toph’s struggles and points of growth are. Just like the element she bends, Toph can and does shift during the series.
Toph is independent, confident, and self-assured - or so it seems. Don’t get me wrong, Toph is tough but I think that toughness exists, at least in part, to protect her soft core. Her true feelings often remain hidden below her metal armor. So let’s explore Toph’s relationship to vulnerability.
1. The Struggle at the heart of Toph’s character arc
A dichotomy to Toph’s character is introduced right from the start, in the episode named after her alter ego, “The Blind Bandit”- she is introduced as a cocky master earthbender who is rightfully proud of her abilities, who incorporates the fact that she is blind into her name. But there is a fragility to her pride that appears when Aang airbends her off the fighting stage in an attempt to talk to her. Later, we are introduced to Toph as the daughter of overbearing and wealthy parents who have completely sheltered her from the world. They see her blindness as something that makes her delicate and in great need of protection, to the point of seeing her as pretty much totally incapable. This establishes the central struggle to Toph’s character: she sees any dependence on another person as threatening to her self-determination, and self-confidence. She believes she cannot be respected as a capable person while relying on others. At the beginning of her arc, Toph sees complete independence as the only way to be free and avoid being swallowed up by other people. She can’t show any feelings that are soft, that make her appear vulnerable because that would mean weakness. In a sense, the way her parents treated her led her to believe that being cared for, being protected, being loved is the equivalent of losing her self. Maybe the reason she chose her fight name to be “The Blind Bandit” is because it implies a vision of herself that is strong through and with her blindess, a vision of herself totally opposed to the young, helpless lady her parents see in her and perhaps want her to be.
2. Healing through Relationships
“The vulnerabillity journey is not the kind of journey we can make alone.” Brené Brown, “Daring Greatly”
Throughout the series, Toph is challenged by and grows through her relationships, mainly those with Team Avatar, and her conversation with Iroh. A significant episode is "The Runaway" where Toph really opens up to Sokka about her feelings towards her mother, and the episode ends with Toph asking Katara for help contacting her parents.
3. A Note on Feminity
Since performative feminity was expected of her from her parents and feminity is usually associated with being weak and less powerful, it is no surprise that her relationship to it is complicated. While Iroh’s tale from Ba Sing Se takes the cake in terms of tear-jerking emotional impact, Katara’s and Toph’s tale has a special place in my heart. I checked and it was written by two women, which does not surprise me. I love the bonding time for Toph and Katara, and how their tale explores Toph’s relationship to feminity. Feminity is strongly tied to beauty, and we see Toph hurt after fancy Ba Sing Se ladies make mean comments on her appearance. Toph’s response is to laugh it off and bend a hole into the bridge, so the ladies fall into the water- protecting her vulnerability by pretending she doesn’t care. She hides her crush on Sokka in similar ways.
4. The culmination of Toph’s arc: vulnerable and strong
In my eyes, Toph’s arc is an argument for interdependence. We can be self-reliant and capable, and we can need other people’s support, emotional and otherwise, at the same time. The final fight on the airships shows this character growth in Toph: she fights like the badass she is, and she lets herself be protected and saved by Sokka and Suki. I think she finally realized that there is no contradiction, and that people protecting her when she wants them to feels good and is necessary. Her blindness has made her particularly vulnerable in the beginning, and she became the greatest earthbender in the world because of it.
Addition: this is why I really dislike what the writers did with Toph’s character in LOK. It is a regression to see her resist hugs and live alone in the swamp, apart from her friends and family, and I am not even touching the cop thing.

Let me try to explain this...
Okay, let me try to explain something. And let me try on a personal level here.
I am bisexual. And while I am a guy, I only came out as trans when I was like 30, so I lived 30 years as a bisexual woman. Because I was out as bisexual when I was like... 11.
And do you know how most guys I have ever dated reacted to it? "OMG! We could have a threesome!"
Of course, if you have followed me for a while, you know that I very much am in favor of moresomes, both as a one-off or a constant thing. Buuut... This still always felt super, super gross to me. Do you want to know why?
Because they saw my sexuality, something that is a very inherent part of myself, as a thing they could use to fulfill their desires. They saw this aspect of me as a tool they could use for themselves. And that is fucking disgusting.
Anyways... This is why I hate playersexuality in video games. Aka "oh, the characters are bisexual, so everyone can romance them". So, the stuff that a lot of modern CRPGs do. Be it Baldur's Gate 3 or Starfield or... Well, you can probably think of several other examples. Because in most of those cases the characters are not really written as bisexual. Their supposed "bisexuality" is just a tool to fulfill the disires of the players. It is not even part of the characters, it is just a tool. And to me, as a bisexual guy, this is fucking offensive.
If you want to make your characters bisexual? Well, then go ahead and write the characters as bisexual. Put it into the text that the characters are bisexual. Put in the effort.
In other forms of media we do not let the creators get away with "well, X is actually Y-sexual", when the text itself does not make it clear. We will call out the writers, directors and showrunners trying to pull this off as cowards, because we kinda know that this sexuality is not in the text to make sure there will not be angry conservatives about "people pushing queerness down their throats". Or because they were too lazy to write it and do the legwork for it.
So, why the fuck are we okay with it, when games do it?
To keep the example with BG3: If you do not play the game as a female character that goes on to romance Astarion and do not enjoy meta-content, you would have no way of knowing that Astarion is "supposed" to be pan. Because he is written as a gay character (by which I am talking about that each and every prior relationship he mentions has been with a man). The same goes in turn with Gale and Shadowheart. If you do not play as a male charater to romance either of them, you will come away from the game and read them as a straight man and a lesbian respectively. Because there is nothing within the text to suggest otherwise.
Their "bisexuality" just exists, so that no players are disappointed that they cannot romance a character. And maybe to make programming easier.
And again, the same is very much true for a lot of other CRPGs. Starfield comes to mind, like most Bathesda games. I mean, it is not quite the same, as for the most part the characters in Bathesda games read more like they do not have any sexuality at all (the fact, that the games are very squeaky clean on the sexual front most certainly plays into it). But the problem is very much the same.
To me it just reads as super biphobic. Because it feels like they can use bisexuality to serve their purpose.
I am fine with the characters being bisexual. No matter what game. But then actually put in the work to write them as bisexual. Make it part of their story. Don't just slap the "bisexual" label onto them, so they can be romanced by whoever.

Gimme all your thoughts on the last season of hsmtmts when you compose yourself! I’m still crying it was so perfect! Us Rinas won so hard!!! They are the most perfectly executed slowburn soulmates ever and the payoff was so sweet!
Tumblr media
ricky bowen basically sums up the entirety of my feelings towards the hsmtmts finale. i have absolutely not composed myself and there's so much to say but I'm not sure I have the words. Seeing as I just finished watching it through for a second time and my tears are still drying .... I'm gonna ramble cause this show means a stupid amount to me
First of all, this was my favorite season. I always say 3rd seasons are the best but... damn. hsmtmts is breaking my streak.
I think it brought back a lot of what made season 1 so so so special to me but it also allowed the show to grow. it was funny and outlandish and ridiculous and surprisingly heartfelt and it made me sob, all like season 1. the meta was metaing, the character development was charater developmenting (4x06??? insanity on every level). almost every single character made me cry at some point - both characters I have loved so dearly from the beginning and some characters I have truly hated at one point or another. genuinely, i think I ended this season more fond of the original main cast than I ever have been - which is saying something!!! i have loved them a lot from the start. I also think the humor and the pacing and the self-awareness were otherworldly.
this show just has a stupid ability to make me feel the full spectrum of human emotions in a 5 minute timespan - I go from laughing my ass off to crying my eyes out to falling in love to hating something so viscerally and it's just akdhsflkjasdhlfkj. it's hard to explain to people who haven't watched it because like ??? what do you mean the stupid littel alphabet show made you feel all that???? and i can't really explain it like you just gotta experience it. I'm a full ass adult and I audibly sobbed at Gina's speech - and i'm pretty sure I'll never be able to watch that scene without crying.
speaking of gina... I've known for a long time that she was one of my girls, but this season has absolutely forever cemented her as one of my favorite characters of all time. she is my girl my queen the love of my life an angel all the good things in the world (i sound like ricky bowen). but very seriously, there's a very short list of my favorite characters of all time and she will always, always, always be there.
I want to speak more about rina but i just.... i'm literally not sure i can find the words. the season was amazing, I loved seeing them grow out of situations that mirrored obstacles they had in the past, I loved the clear lines that showed how perfect Gina and Ricky are for each other as opposed to their previous partners, I think the rain kiss genuinely took my breath away and I'm so so so so happy that they are happy. I leapt out of my seat at the callbacks and the reveals and lost my mind at how invisible string and mastermind coded their entire relationship is. they are literally soulmates like gina took one look at "skater boy" and she was like "wow i guess this is the love of my life". like?????? that's so genuinely insane???? unhinged television.
i'm also heartbroken that i don't get more of them. i know we just saw a whole season of them kissing but like - I want more. I want to see them graduate. i want to see them take on more challenges. i want to see them fall even further in love. i'm sure i'll have more eloquent, well-rounded thoughts once my brain is working, but right now, i'm just so happy with what we got and also a little bit mourning the things we'll never see.
all in all, that's kind of how i feel about the show in general. i don't know that it feels finished. like - it was an ending. it had so much closure. this wasn't cancelled or cut off, it was brought to a close. but i still have so much i want to see from these characters. I want to see more of ricky and gina always. I want Kourtney taking on college and a Jetney duet (I'm gonna sue someone over the fact that i didn't get one). I want to see so so so much more of maddox and ashlyn!!! i literally just got them. and miss jenn and mazarra????? they literally just. dropped that in my lap and ran!!!!
i think the problem isn't actually the ending, though. I think it's just me, lol. I'm not sure I'd ever be ready to say goodbye to these characters. and i know it's good to go out on a high note but damn can't we ride this high for just a little bit longer?
also - terri porter is gunning for one of my least favorite tv parents ever and like. if you know me you know that's saying something.
also also - they swore more in this season of hsmtmts than in s3 of the boat show so. do with that what you will.

I never really understood that decision either. And I'm glad to see that at least here she'll have to earn it the hard way. It always felt a bit wrong with how easy Susie and some of the other more destructive villians Kirby and the others have faced over the years seems to get away with it all. And I'm kinda tired of finding so many stories that go's "Oh this and this villian is good now? And no need for a repetition arc? Okay we'll just roll with it." It kinda makes the charaters swallow.
Tumblr media
Yeaahhh in canon, Susie strikes me as someone who seems pretty uncaring/doesn't think she did anything wrong. She even continues to mechanize planets according to Star Allies which... How tf is Kirby okay with this? Either I'm missing something here, or Susie has literally not changed in the slightest and has only learned not to mechanize Kirby's planet because he's there.
She doesn't seem apologetic toward Meta Knight either, considering on the Allies screens he and even Dark Meta Knight run away from her, indicating there is a semblance of dislike/fear toward her.
But I can sort of get where she's coming from since she grew up in a world where they dehumanized everyone else but themselves. She refers to anyone on Popstar as 'Natives' and talks poorly about them all the time, so that tells me she doesn't see other living beings as truly alive or worthwhile.
Tumblr media
Not to mention she was yeeted into another dimension and then promptly not recognized by her own father despite returning to him and such. She even has the gall in the English version to cry "Yippee" when she effectively nuked his brain by interrupting his connection to Star Dream.
It's... very messed up and strange. A lot about her is very odd to me, like she just doesn't feel anything beyond what's within her circle of enjoyment/desires, kind of like how she treated Meta Knight like a shiny new toy to dress up despite him being alive.
I don't know if she even recognized her own dad as being a living creature after a while either with how... casual her response is to him being controlled by Star Dream. It's like he doesn't matter anymore with him not recognizing her, and yet she still remained with him because... she's apparently a spy?? It's very out of the blue.
She's interesting in the sense that she's someone that has some stuff going on but it's a weird messy thing that is muddled in weird translation choices and straight up selfishness and self-centeredness.
I'd love to see her go through a real redemption arc rather than a "Here's a robot, Pinky I'm on your side now that I could possibly die haha." Seems a bit... out of place in my opinion. Also to be fair I love Robobot, I even beat Star Dream OS Soul in the True Arena, but that ending in the story mode still has me like "??????????????????" with the character beats.

Is it bad that I hc Meta being very good at art and crafts? Especially in the arts of knitting and embroidery? I just kinda want to give one of my fav charaters a nice little hobby to do when stressed or just wants to relax in other ways.
Totally!, considering that in the anime Meta did make himself a pengi disguise (a really good one btw, no visible stitches) I like to think he probably makes his own and kirby's clothes (this includes any sweaters or scarfs for winter!) :)

📝Richard Roo
| Send me 📝 and i'll give you a random amount of headcanons/facts about my muse!
So I feel most things you do already know mostly I'm just gonna confirm stuff. Mainly this is meta about Richards creation and idk I hope that's interesting?
Richard was never meant to be a oc in a sense. He was just gonna be the boss of another charater his friend Valerie who was meant to be the oc basically.
I ended up getting intrested in why Richard was him and well here we are.
Richards the first oc I've made in adult hood the last oc i made I'm pretty sure was Nina back in 2012 Richard I made roughly in 2019. So for seven years I have made a charater and thats kind of why Richard is speical to me.
Richard has inspirations from a few of my favorite charaters such as mamoru from sailormoon.
Tumblr media
I know you don't know a think about sailormoon buy I will say this Bailey is pretty similar to usagi/sailormoon in thats he's a crybaby who loses to eat is lazy and is best know for thier good heart.
Another inspiration for Richard was nightwing from DC comics its where his name came from Richard.
Tumblr media
In the vein of this I did name Richard's father Thomas after Batmans dad. I almost name Zane Bruce for this connection as well and his mother Martha but went with Meldoy instead because of the joke that she's the opposite of a meldoy. For Zane? I wanted his name to stand out so I gave him a different name
Mostly the inspirations were for design and why blue became his color.
Richard maybe someone who can talk to people and such easily but in truth? He's an introvert. His energy is zapped interacting with others its partly why a café is a perfect place to work since they are quiet.
I wouldn't call Richard shy though he's not that kind of introvert he is for sure someone who enjoys being indoors more
when it comes to his mental health Antiexy is something he has for sure. In truth though he deals with more than one kind because I'm a bitch to this bird. Richard has OCD for one it's why he is so set in his ways and has to have things just show why breaking from a routine can be difficult for him even. Richard also deals with PTSD. He did come from an abusive household and it was his trauma comes from its also why Richard has so much trouble with his emotions because it's difficult for him to control them in the first place. Richard does indeed have triggers as well but they are minor. And just general anxiety.
When it comes to Richard's way of showing love it's because he just doesn't want people to go through the things he does. He wants the people he loves to be kinder to themselves. He wants them to have better. For Buddy a parent who will support them for Bailey a Partner that will always stand by them. It is not something he actively thinks but it is why he is the way with them.
Richard used to buy from Bailey company and I'm sure there are records of his purchases yet he had no idea who Bailey was when they met because well he doesn't follow all of that kind of buzz.
Richard moved to St.Carnad for a reason, his parents always claimed it was an awful place to start a business so out of spite he picked there to start up his business.
Richard started to draw as a child because he just wanted to draw cartoons, though his style got more realistic (in my mind that's his style) because he found interest in sketching stuff. To this day its how he thinks the best he doesn't draw he feels but its how he gathers his thoughts often when gifting something he made it's because he came to some conclusions when drawing the piece.
Richard in a sense was sort of in an enraged marriage as a teen. This girl was his first partner even. His mother wanted him to marry the daughter of a friend because thier companies were going to merge. Richard only dated her as a way to get out of the house. So in her mind, Richard was promised to this girl. In the Childhood au this is why Melody hates Bailey because Bailey was in the way of her plan. not that it mattered Richard and the girl didn't like each other is was a matter of convincing. They are still friends though. They never even kissed or held hands.
Yeah so those tats on Richard hmm? he has a lot uh? Along with a scare? that he hates yet he actively scared himself with tattoos? So it's not common but lets just say sometimes people who like tattoos also were people with certien tendencies of the self-harming route.
The only ones that don't apply to this is the ones he got of Bailey's name and Buddy's name those ones were different like his one for Zane. These are people who take a lot of that pain away from him. It way those ones are so different from the rest of his tattoos.
Richard subscribes to Bailey's company magainze and he keeps any covers Bailey is on for himself. Look he don't care he married to Bailey. Bailey is hot and he will keep those photos despite the fact he get far better personally.
Richard doesn't care what others say he loves his husband he knows Bailey has his own demons. He knows Bailey hates not always being thier big happy fluffy self but he wants Bailey to know he doesn't have to be around Richard. Richard wants to be what Bailey is for him his safe space. A no-judgment zone anything said between them stays between them. Bailey is far more open compared to Richard but he knows there things Bailey keeps as well and he'll never press them to tell Bailey can share as much and as little as they wish he'll still love them.
Richard thinks Bailey is a better person than him because well unlike Richard Bailey is a bit more willing to fess up to his fuck ups. Richard rather act he is perfect Bailey may live up to his own flaws like being lazy or being overly emotional. But in truth Richard admires that Bailey can be open as they are Bailey is what makes Richard strive to be better its why Bailey gets to see Richard be the dork he is because well he's fine with Bailey seeing that side.
Richard favorite genre of books and movies? romance uwu he is always reading a love story and aromatic movies are his favorite romcoms mostly but the Notebook is his favorite. To this day it still makes him cry and yes he will get embarrassed about it
Richard also reads the spicy kind of romance stories uwu mans like his smut and has read it in public before he got no shame uwu
Richard loathes public transportation
