How do Flerken Eat?

We know they have a pocket dimension in their mouth.

They can fit virtually anything into this pocket dimension.

However, this isn’t a personal pocket dimension per Flerken. It’s one large dimension that all Flerken are connected to.

When swallowed by a Flerken on Earth, Carol is able to exit through the mouth of another Flerken on the other side of the galaxy because both are connected to a separate pocket dimension that is linked to every individual Flerken’s mouth, showing that all Flerken share the same pocket dimension.

This brings us back to the question: How do they eat food? They are essentially cats of holding. How do they gain sustenance if everything they swallow ends up being held in a communal pocket dimension?

Most of the things Flerkens "swallow" are not food. Flerken can take and store items and then regurgitate what they’ve taken at will. These items are not consumed but simply hoarded, as a house cat may hoard socks or other items under a couch or another hard place to find.

As with cats, this behavior may be connected to resource guarding, hunting instincts, or mothering instincts. In the film "The Marvels" (spoiler warning) a pregnant flerken steals various items of living room furniture, which she later regurgitates and uses to build/line her nest when she lays eggs.* (see footnote). Flerkens collect items by swallowing them, storing them safely, and coughing them up undamaged at will. Presumably, like a Dungeons and Dragons bag of holding, the flerken can pull out anything it's looking for that it knows it put in its pocket dimension.

So, how do they eat if their mouth portal leads to a holding dimension rather than a stomach?

The answer is with their tentacles/tendrils.

While the pocket dimension is not a stomach that digests things, the tentacles/tendrils, which are used to grab items and prey outside the mouth, also function to digest food inside the pocket dimension. This brings nutrients to the individual Flerken as each has its own set of tendrils connected to its body.

When a Flerken attempts to digest Carol, coating her in stomach acid, it wraps her in interior tentacles/tendrils located inside its mouth pocket dimension. Therefore, Flerkens eat like a sundew. Wrapping up prey, secreting digestive enzymes, and absorbing nutrients.

To eat, both flerken and sundew ensnare, dissolve, and absorb.

Footnote - Female flerkens can lay up to 117 eggs which hatch into flerkittens who are developmentally similar to 8-week-old kittens and ready to leave their mother soon after hatching. Some of the eggs will be laid with the mother in a nest she guards, while others will be scattered and hidden in various places to ensure some eggs survive if anything happens to the nest.
