snowshot highlights / quotes / live comments roundup
i sucessfully freaked out my party with my little dragon man who just learned to polymorph and is trying to observe humans to learn how they behave. and is just being a little freak in a blizzard staring at them. baited them into thinking he was The Thing when there were other Things
i was not allowed to keep a single one of the nat20s i rolled, i was forced to reroll all of them (thanks claire)
my party of three sixth level pcs took on, with the help of a cr 2 wyrmling, two cr 9 creatures
"you all are testing me" "we are testing the ice!"
"about to attempt to make an overture of friendship while wildshaped as a baby penguin."
^ player approached my dragon npc as a baby penguin and he turned into a baby penguin and they determined he was not a threat. while telepathically talking. as penguins.
my player waiting patiently to just say "27, guiding bolt" while i went on a distressed dm tangent at the start of her turn
the monk doing a driveby hands of healing on the cleric by jabbing her in the forehead before running off to stab the whistler
the party navigated the lake by sending the monk laying on a floating disc, stabbing the ice to test whether it's fragile and the druid using shape water to solidify the ice whenever they needed
overall a fantastic and shenanigans filled oneshot with an encounter that this party ROCKED.

Hoping we can big brain this as a collective tag, because I have no answers. But it was this post by @paladin-n-cleric and @jazz-penguin that got me thinking about maybe it wasn't 12 year old Will communicating with Joyce through the lights. If they're going to be bringing some elements of time travel into S5 (speculation at this point), maybe it would be S5 Will (or Mike and Will) who use the lights to communicate. All this is in the linked post above.
However, what's been puzzling me since I learned the Upside Down was stuck on the day Will disappears is how did he use those lights to communicate with his mom?
When the older teens use the Lite-Brite thing to communicate from the Upside Down, the machine itself didn't actually appear there. It was only in the real world. Dustin had to tell them where he was putting it and not move it so they knew where to draw the letters.
So how was Will able to point out specific letters in S1. If it's following the same logic, he shouldn't have been able to see the christmas lights, NOR the letters Joyce wrote on the wall if the Upside Down was stuck. Because Joyce didn't write the letters until Ep 3 (which I assume was at least one or two days later from when Will went missing?) In fact, I just remembered that it did show the Byers house in the Upside down in S1E8 when Hopper and Joyce went into the UD to rescue Will. And I wasn't able to see any Christmas lights in the UD at all. Only in the real world scene with Jonathan, Steve, and Nancy.
So...thoughts, my big brained besties?

Coronet Indigo Ibarra Runaway Royals Campaign Air Genasi Life Cleric
Current Level: 8 Age: 27 Height: 5'7" Pronouns: he/him Character Song: Like A River Runs - Bleachers Status: Enjoying the Sunset
Likes: birds, herbalism, magic, griffons, Dasnar, secrets, fancy clothes Dislikes: bullies, being put on the spot, losing people Hobbies: griffon riding, gossiping, letter writing Talents: healing, visions of death, looking sleepy
Indigo Ibarra is a life cleric, devoted to a god of life and death, who is haunted by visions of death. He's a hopeless romantic despite this. He is also extremely nosy. He might does have a crush on his god. He might does also have a crush on his best friend. He might does also have a crush on this one totally normal guy we met briefly on the road. He is in love with the Princess of Grad, Agathe, who is none of these other people. Don't worry about it.
Last Updated 1/5/2024
Twelve years ago, Indigo's younger sibling, Coronet Wioletta, went missing in the gardens-- shortly after he refused to investigate a door with them because he was reading. The Sky-City has not moved from the mountains near the Winter Sea since that day.
Indigo's first visions came to him at his first ball, nine years ago, where he had a massive vision of the ballroom slipping into a battlefield and nearly all the young persons in attendance dying. Needless to say, this did not make him very popular at parties. Or, well, it might have but he withdrew to try and sort himself out. Shortly after he had his first proper contact with Dasnar, god of life and death, who had given him these visions. His next visions proved to play out more quickly, unfortunately, and Indigo's next prophecy was of his mother, Crown Bianca, falling from the sky when out on a griffon. Despite Indigo's begging, Bianca insisted on carrying out her duties and it did, indeed, come to pass. He was isolated almost completely after that. That was eight years ago.
Six months ago, he left the city entirely having had visions of one of his older siblings, Coronet Jasmine, dying ill and not much older than she was at that moment. Scared, he had consulted with his brother, Coronet Ivy, and decided to leave and try to learn to cope with and possibly control his prophetic powers. He left notes for Coronet Jasmine, asking her to please look out for herself, and to his parent, Crown Azul, promising to return when he had a better handle on things so they would not worry that they had completely lost another child.
While in the Great Wood, Indigo found Kora on the forest floor, asleep, with the plant life of the forest actively trying to grown over him. Indigo managed to wake the sleeper and they traveled together from that point on.(During their travels, it would come to light that Kora was also royalty in a very strange way. He was a prince of Mina, now the City of Smoke, 300 years ago before getting turned into a tree.)
More recently, while staying at the Eventide Inn-- which travels!-- he was reunited with Coronet Wioletta. His sibling had, it turned out, been in the Feywild the whole time and had returned, shortly after his leaving court, and was looking for him. They had met up with Katina, Princess of Sura, who was on the run having been accused of her brother's murder. By this time they had all also fallen in with Friz, aka Prince Atama of the City of Smoke, who was on some sort of mission that involved taking directions from a floating penguin (with teeth?!) named Pablo Banana Bread.
As all roads seemed to be pointing towards Eska, Indigo's home, the party began traveling together.

Sunday afternoon, the Night Vale High School Scorpions take on the Ash Valley Penguin Kings in basketball. It should be an easy victory for our home team, because the Penguin Kings are winless this season. This is partially due to poor coaching, and partially due to a district-wide clerical error that led to no students ever being enrolled at Ash Valley High. Six one way half-dozen the other, as Eleanor Roosevelt always used to say on that one sitcom.

Call of the Netherdeep
Chapter 2: They shot first
Tumblr media
This session began with the main party taking an easy morning, as they've already earned all their freshly baked medals. They have some back and forth with the rivals, and after a while, the rivals leave, and the main party find they're missing a few items with cryptic clues in their place. The party quickly decided it was probably their rivals who did this.
Cherchael, who lost her shield, decides it's probably not worth it to find her old one and goes to buy a new one. While at the caravan, she finds Ziku's thief tools on top of a building.
Ziku, Cherchael, Quierk, and Earl split up to find the remaining items. Cherchael spotted something shiny near the top of the Luxon temple and found this is a spear, but not Earl's specific glaive. They also talk to an Earth Genasi Trickery Cleric at the temple doing pranks, who confesses he buried something near the temple last night. It's Cherchael's shield. Ziku went to the swimming race and found Earl's glaive there. Having exhausted themselves from a busy day, they chill out until the ending ceremony in the evening.
The elders of the Jigow chose our party and their rivals for the final challenge, welcoming them into the Emerald Grotto. It will be a race to find the "Emerald Eye" in the depths of the temple.
When in the temple, the main party has initiative priority and takes one path within the temple, the rivals take the other. The temple is mostly underwater, but they're all given water breathing potions.
The main party's path takes them past carnivorous plants, a rock fall, and a swarm of fantasy piranhas. The rival party fights a giant octopus, presses a button that undoes a current, and finds the secret of a dead end. Both parties reach the final room at the same time and have to fight a giant shark with a magic spear stuck in it and the prize (an Emerald pendent) tied around its body.
Most people start by attacking the shark, but Earl decides to try removing the spear, which takes away some of the sharks' abilities. Ziku tries to cut the rope tying the pendent, but Brucey (the penguin druid) sicks his summon on Ziku so that they don't get any upper hand.
The shark is slain after like 3 or 4 (very long) turns and thrashes around before dying to reveal one more secret room. The rivals quickly snatch the Emerald Eye from the shark's corpse and then decide to leave, having claimed the winning ticket. The other party investigated this secret room and found a sparkly gold pendent. They get a vision from a tortured man named Alyxian, telling them he's trapped in a dark and scary place by scary red magic, and that YOU the PLAYER, can help by bringing this pendent to the places where Alyxian originally awoke power in it. Praying to certain gods on the way.
They get back to the entrance of the Grotto to find the rivals have already claimed their prize money and gone back to the inn. Quierk quickly shows Elder Ushru the pendent. He tells them it is a relic of a time when gods fought, a vestige of divergence called the "Jewel of Three Prayers", and that the best place to find more info on it is Bazzoxan, a military outpost town built on top a place badly scared by the time the gods fought. He offers the party free rooms for a couple of nights while they decide where they wanna go.

Hello, I am a first-time DM and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for magic items for a level 3 party, with a mix of experienced and new players? (we are playing a home-brew campaign that is currently city-based, with some eventual fey wild exploration). The party is an arcane trickster rogue, a hunter ranger, a college of creation bard, an eldritch knight and a forge cleric (worshipping Tymora), and they are about to have a big fight in a lair where a wealthy high-level Bard/Warlock NPC has stashed some extra goods. Any recommendations, ideas or suggestions of items to steer clear of would be very appreciated. I hope you are having a great day!
Hey! so to be honest I am not a big Items Person though I'm working on it, so you may wish to ask someone else. I will say, the Xanathar's guide items are all mostly useless except in highly specific circumstances but also VERY funny, and are appropriate for a low-level party. While this is a pretty strong party comp, and I'd honestly consider sticking strictly to consumables (ie, have some healing potions or a few magic arrows, maybe one or two cool uncommon other potions) you could give them some low-level magic weapons? Like, of the "Moon-Touched Sword" and "Trident of Fish Command" variety - technically magic so they overcome resistance to non-magical items, uncommon in rarity, +1 bonus at most.
Silly items that are useful in niche situations are in fact the best ones though. I'm not an item person but my DM in one game is and we have a token that turns into an emperor penguin for a minute when activated. It actually has been useful as a distraction, and also the gnome paladin likes to activate it when she needs to hug someone her height, but it's mostly hilarious.

For the OC ask meme: 14 for Admiral Abbigull, 21 for Bilgerat, and 24 for Flint!
14. Does your OC have any superstitions? Good luck rituals? Do they believe in and/or practice the arcane arts?
As a sailor AND a cleric Abbigull is full of good luck tidbits. No black socks, don't open an umbrella on deck, she ABSOLUTELY does a rain dance as apart of her weather casting.
She, in fact, argues that SHE is a good luck charm in of herself with much winking and raucous seagull laughter. Whether that's true... well, she's no cleric of a luck goddess, I'll just say that.
Though, they DO say killing a seabird is a rather spectacular way of bringing bad luck upon yourself. Considering James & Leon's plans COMPLETELY fall through after Leon SHOOTS Abbigull in Penguin Rescue... lmao
21. What sets your OC off? What will make them go from a docile little lamb to a rampaging, fire-breathing dragon?
Stick him in a room with Little Joe and set a timer. I generously give it 10 minutes before Little Joe either provokes an argument for fun or Bilgerat goes off because everything about Joe is just... like that. Something's wrong with that guy. Something's wrong with that guy that's also wrong with Bilgerat.
On specifics though, oh boy- he hates being belittled is the big one. And "concern" tends to come off as "aggressive mothering", mostly because Vinny and Little Joe are TERRIBLE about uuuuh self-preservation and that Upsets Him.
24. What is your OC’s favorite food? Can they cook it? Where do they get their food? (And most importantly, do you feed your OCs enough? Don’t forget to throw them a meal once in a while.)
Flint is a spice fiend and loves him a good vindaloo. He can certainly attempt to cook it. It won't be to his satisfaction but it'll be vindaloo. Probably. As a cook he's mostly just the person adding hot sauce to his meal portion. People have learned not to steal bites off his plate the hard way.
And hey, look. LOOK. I am TRYING to feed him. Phim is trying. He needs reminding.
@doctor-yoshi-soul tagging because i mention Your Boy in there

Operation: Restoration - Part 1: The Resistance
Tumblr media
Part 1 out of 4 of Operation: Restoration has been completed and everything that happened was interesting. Players had to work their hardest in order to survive, yet we able to let their personalities shine.
For those who are unaware, I run a Club Penguin D&D campaign in Discord and the goal is to end Herbert’s reign on the island. Throughout the campaign, the characters’ personalities also play a role in the outcome of the story.
What you’re about to read here are highlight notes based on what happened during the first part of the campaign. Think of this as some sort of Dungeon Master’s campaign notes as a form of inspiration.
The Chapters
Each part has 5 chapters and everyone levels up whenever they finish 1/2 or the entire story. Yes, this whole campaign is under a milestone system as it’s much easier to manage.
The purpose of part 1 was to give some sort of tutorial system on how this world works and teach how D&D is done in under 5 chapters of the story.
Chapter 1 – Operation: Restoration
The introduction to the campaign. Players are introduced to the campaign, know the leaders and some basic backstory about the world they’re in.
Chapter 2: Survival
As players explore the outside world the first time, they have to face the harsh conditions the world throws at them.
Chapter 3: Dreamscape
Players enter each other’s dreams as they’re being convinced to give up and go home. The way they wake up/escape the dream will determine how the end battle MIGHT happen.
Chapter 4: Puffle Party
As players are now entering the main wilderness behind the main town, they encounter the “rabid puffles” – colourless puffles who attack penguins.
Chapter 5: Why are you here?
Before they are able to launch the flare up to the sky to tell home they’re safe – they have to face the guardian of the dojo and prove to them that they’re worthy on stopping Herbert.
The Characters
There are 4 regulars in the campaign. We also have other playable characters but are hardly online. We also have 2 NPC’s that only play a role in the roleplaying, but not the combat. In regards to abilities, it seems fairly balanced as they’re all special in their own way.
However, despite their determination and how they’re willing to keep the group tight nit, they tend to disagree with each other. Like all of them have their own different motives on how to solve problems.
The ongoing question in this campaign is “Why were you all chosen to be sent out?” as they function differently compared to past groups that was sent out.
The Resistance:
Tacos – A rogue (PC)
S’Anthemum – A bard (PC)
Minor – A cleric (PC)
Sully – A fighter (PC)
Pumpkin – Ghost Pookie (NPC)
Clifford – Giant orange puffle (NPC)
The Story
The goal is to launch a flair out onto the sky at the dojo before infiltrating Herbert’s fortress as a way to let their leaders know they’re safe and alive. Not many people has left the cave and some were never heard back from ever again.
The main theme of the first 5 chapters involves them figuring out why they were selected by Sen – leader of the Operation: Restoration initiative. If you compare what they’re like in a team to other groups, you can sense some dysfunctionality. Even the NPC’s are dysfunctional with the team members as Clifford is really entitled and just complains to everything and Pumpkin just stands there acting cute.
Despite them being stubborn and make stupid or risky decisions, all of them are skilled in their own way. They’re able to face obstacles and find ways to survive the night and keep each other close. Each and every one of them has their own purpose on doing this mission but have the same goal – save the island. Despite them being skilful, there are times where their actions don’t go according to plan and end up hurting each other or doing something that will give consequences towards themselves.
They all care for each other and that’s what makes them chosen by Sen. They all have something that no other teams have – the drive to save their friends. The priority to save each other rather than to finish the mission. She believes it’s that trait that’s missing in past groups and maybe it’s something that could help succeded.
Homebrewed content
At the end of part 1 – all the players received homebrewed magic weapons inspired from Card-Jitsu snow and a homebrewed spell that should help them during their battles but has to meet certain conditions in order to use it.
One of the sub-classes needed to have altered rules in order to make it fair during combat as it seemed to be a bit overpowered in a sense.
All the creatures and enemies did received homebrewed stats due to this whole thing being Club Penguin themed.
Part 1’s additional lore
In part 1, we learn multiple things about the island’s condition outside the main game description.
Chapter 1 – Operation Resistance
It’s been discovered that people were missing during the first few days of Herbert’s takeover and some were traumatised from their event. Penguins go out every 25 years as a form of not causing so much attention as they’re different from everyone else they’ll encounter.
Chapter 2: Survival
During the great exodus, penguins caused an explosion in a forest, causing them to transform into ghost permanently. Since the Halloween party was the previous event before Herbert’s takeover, it was Gariwald’s machine that caused the phantasmic energy surge. All those affected can’t leave the material plane and forever live their lives as a ghost.
Chapter 3: Dreamscape
Characters now face the dread that they might lose at the last minute as someone uses their dreams to warn them about their impending danger.
Chapter 4: Puffle Party
Julie – PH’s granddaughter, is now the caretaker of the wild puffles that gone mad due to the climate changes. The puffles lost their colour and became hostile. They’ve become less friendly towards penguins due to illegal puffle hunting. Due to hostility, puffles are now harder to tame and gain their trust.
Chapter 5: Why are you here?
Ivyory – Tusk’s descendant is the caretaker of the dojo and will throw out those unworthy of mastering card-jitsu due to people using it for evil. Tusk – despite him being bad in CJ Snow, still respects the elements and due to penguins changing their nature, Tusk now vows to teach it to those who with good in their hearts. It’s also been discovered that Sen was also part of the resistance team in the early years but retreated due to team failure. She’s now training and choosing agents as she doesn’t want them to face the same mistakes as she made. The reason they were chosen – because they value their team members more than their mission.
Highlighted moments
Some highlights from the story are:
The team being able to beat Sen but not a level 3 Herbert simulation
Tacos shoving an apple down S’Anthemum’s throat
S’Anthemum being dragged down on the snow by Clifford due to the chair being broken in the sled
S’Anthemum accidentally casting sleep on Sully, making the search for Clifford even harder
Penta (A special guest appearance by Chris Gliddon/Polo Field) and S’Anthemum entering the ghost forest and encountering the ghost pookie.
Penta adopting a ghost pookie
The team knocking dream!Jot dead cold and doing lots of strength checks to break down a door.
S’Anthemum trying to recite how the puffle reproduction system works but is then almost suffocated to death by a hoard of puffles. (NOTE: I did have to abuse my DM powers for this scene to happen due to players wanting him to stop).
The entire Ivyory battle – BEST BATTLE EVER!!!!
Comments
So far, players enjoyed the story but sometimes hate the challenges I put them in. The most prominent comment I’ve received so far is that I tend to make overpowered spell casters for them to fight against. It’s not that they’re overpowered, they just have bad saving rolls.
From my IRL D&D group – they’re surprised that a new D&D enthusiast like me was able to get the basic jist of dungeon mastering. They found the story to be funny based on the players’ actions and outcomes. They did suggest other things to keep it more engaging or to “challenge” the players more.
My thoughts on the current players – they’re good. They’re driven yet they tend to do stupid things that I have to wing on the spot. Trying not to kill them is a challenge.
What happens next
Part 2 will commence in 2 weeks and they’re going to deal with new challenges and learn more about the island history. Something that I can share without spoiling the campaign is that they can’t enter the main town area… yet. They’re going to deal with penguins who are like them but different in their own right.
Overall, the campaign is running smoothly with players interested to continue on, despite the challenges I give them. If you’re interested to be in the campaign, we run it every 7 pm PST on Saturdays (12 PM AEST – Sunday) over in the Boiler Room Discord Server. The more players that join, the better the chance to defeat Herbert.

I like to rename my spells in DnD... One of the earliest one was Leomund's Tiny Hut, which at first casting I described it as looking like a rabbit hole...then it was renamed to Hobbit Hole because reasons... (Remus is the name of my wizard btw) Recently I learned Mordekainen's Faithful Hound. But Remus already has quite a few familiars, and I had already reflavored Phantom Steed to be his almiraj familiar sized up to large, so I decided to make his rockhopper penguin Puffer into his Faithtful Hound, now named "Remus' Faithful Penguin".
He takes his job very seriously.
I know the RAW says the hound is invisible (also Puffer can’t talk), but I think its more fun to imagine just good ol' Puffer wearing classy sunglasses.
Other fun renames:
Bye Bye- Misty Step Bye I’m gonna go a bit further- Dimension Door Mega Lily- Phantom Steed (Lily is his Almiraj) Telling the Enemy they're a bitch (Vicious Mockery) Dancing Lights (not renamed but it has the flavor-text: Remus Juggles. Its not cheating) Emergency Healing Word- Healing Word (also has the flavor text "For when Paddock (the cleric) is unconscious") Find Lily- Find Familiar. (Admittedly not always correct since he has more than one familiar... Lily is just his "main") Stage Workers- Unseen Servants (he's an entertainer) Tindres' Off Button- Sleep (Its kind of an in-joke...) Feed Lily Hot Peppers- Dragon's Breath. (At one point it was described as "Lily stress eats" The material component is a hot pepper btw) Magic Telephone: Sending FIREBALL!!- Fireball
SUPER MEGA FIREBALL!!!!- Delayed blast fireball Screw you guys I’m going home- Teleport Weak ass slapp- Not a spell, its his unarmed attack.
