Biden's intent to means-test student debt reduction—violating a promise to make student debt reduction universal—threatens Democrats' election chances in 2022, says Cory Doctorow.
Democrats campaign against universal benefits, claiming they'd be free even to the wealthy. But if college was free in America, only 1.4% of the benefit would accrue to rich kids.
"College debt relief is hugely popular, especially among the voter base that Dems will have to turn out to avoid catastrophic losses in the 2022 mid-terms ," people with fewer economic resources. College debt relief could help close the racial wealth gap and build the Black middle class.
College debt relief won't much benefit the rich because the rich mostly don't pay for college by taking out student loans. If forgiving student debt helped the rich, politicians would have done it already.
Means-testing generates red tape. The rich can always hire people to get around red tape. It's the middle class and poor that get tangled up in red tape to the point of paralysis.
I took out student loans to go to college, I paid them off, and I support forgiving student debt today.

Do your best in high school. You can get enough scholarships and grants to pay for college. It just takes a shit ton of work. Keep applying for every single scholarship. Sure, $250-$1000 isn’t much, but it adds up quickly and can save your ass from debt that will be highly difficult to pay off. Those smaller scholarships are a lot easier to get too. Go to college right after high school, if possible. You have to rack up those scholarships during your high school years, and not just during college. Do the work. Debts sucks balls. Big, hairy and sweaty balls. Get help if you need to. Don’t be ashamed to ask and get tutors. The hard work is worth it. You can do this. You got this.

Yes, I paid off my college loan.
Yes, I'm glad you got a reduction on your college loan.
I have far too much pride to be so petty and small-minded.

The financial aid office at my brothers school dropped him from all classes and told him he’s not eligible for any aid the third day in of the semester. This man is at the state college. Trying to get his associate. I’m at the grad level getting my masters and I got aid.
Listen. I’m sweaty, cranky, and hungry.
So, someone’s about to get an angry older sister in this office.

One really wild thing you don’t know about until it happens is all that “oh if you’re a teacher they’ll pay off your loans” or even loan forgiveness is that it only applies to federal loans.
So if you have private loans you’re shit out of luck. The payment pause doesn’t even apply to you.
File that under things I should’ve been taught in high school along with what the fafsa does instead of just “do it you need to”

I have paid off my student loans.
First began taking them out in 2012 and graduated college in the summer of 2016.
Started paying them when I immediately began college, with monthly interest payments.
I worked almost 40 hours a week as a full time student, maintained a GPA above 3.0 and had an active social life. I went to a college in state, chosen because it was the cheapest of the four I was accepted to, and commuted everyday.
When I graduated college, my monthly payments were around $500-$600 a month. I was working in the same restaurant job I had during college for the next 4 years while desperately seeking a full time position.
In 2017 my grandfather passed away and I received some money which was all put toward getting rid of the loans with the higher interest rates I had been paying since I was 18 years old. This was absolutely a privilege, and I was still left with about $30,000 (?) in federal loans.
In June of 2018 I owed 26,320. In 2020 I finally got a full time job. Covid happens, monthly payments were frozen, a gift honestly. I started saving up my monthly payments and then paying off individual loans in large chunks. I have applied for PSLF as a government employee and was still about 80 qualifying payments shy of forgiveness when I made the decision to just get rid of it all.
I paid the last individual loan a few days ago.
This timeline may not seem that impressive but to me it is.
I’ve never traveled, I’ve never left the country, I didn’t do spring break vacations, I couldn’t afford to move out of my parents home until I was 28. I stayed at jobs I absolutely hated and drove cars until they couldn’t be driven anymore. I had panic attacks from the fear of never getting out of the debt. I remember breaking down on the basement steps of my parents home after coming home from work at 11pm because I was just burnt out from the worrying and anxiety, I was 22. I use to make the joke that if I died, yeah I’d be dead, but at least my loans would be gone.
My story isn’t special or unique, it’s not particularly heart wrenching or moving anyone to tears but I know somewhere out there, there are other 21 year olds suddenly finding themselves in this situation. It’s a feeling worse than drowning. It can make you question everything and wonder if it was all worth it for an education.
College is where I fell in love with learning, but was it worth it? I will never be the same person I was again because of the anxiety caused by the financial stress I faced at a young age. I missed out on so many of the things young people are urged to do and explore because I was busy keeping up with debt. I had years of unhappiness because of the need for financial security and being terrified to take risks in my career choices.
I’m left wondering since I made that final payment, was it worth it? I have a BA In History with a minor in cultural anthropology. I loved perusing my studies.
I am a personnel officer/clerk for a municipal government. College degree helps my position but was not necessarily a requirement.
Will it equal out somewhere down the line? I really don’t know.

I really don’t want a mobile app for my college loans. I would infinitely prefer it if loan servicers invested in 1) making easily navigable webpages and 2) actual customer service or perhaps 3) keeping interest rates for future borrowers down.

Are you a survivor

As much as dad and I might've argued, when it came to loans we agreed. Don't take part in it if you're not 100% positive you'll be paying it off.
Somehow along the way, recruiters would try promising me that I'll be able to afford it without a problem one day. Ohh as if they could see everyone's future.
Interesting. This is what 👨‍🦼 me sees; I'd rather not be drowning in it when there's a recession either.
At least a professor understood why I was tossing jabs at him and universities over tuition & loans. Think he wanted to hit back until they heard I was an IT intern long ago.
That's when they cranked up the mind games we were having a blast with. It's called, review the grad papers. Me: At least it's a notch up from what I used to do.
It's a serious question. I had a broken family to worry about that included siblings decades younger than me.
