As with Gaspar Yangas in Mexico, so in Colombia with Benkos Bioho:
He was the founding father of Palenque de San Basilio. While the community got away with flouting the decrees of the King of Spain, the man who led them and was even treated as a king was not. His execution, like that of Gaspar Yanga, cast a long cloud over the reality of what became Colombia, and is still a flash point between Colombians to this day.
And yet, in the end, the community he built was more than one man and endures to this day. There are those with far greater panoplies of state-building than he who cannot boast nearly of so much, and whose causes were much less wholesome than securing freedom for an oppressed people.

"Incisive and creative, historian Catalina Muñoz follows Liberal politicians, bureaucrats, and intellectuals in the manner of an ethnographer using the paper trail they left behind. This critical study is beautifully crafted. Muñoz convincingly demonstrates that the simultaneous promotion of national unity and inclusion worked hand in glove with the maintenance of vertical ties for the legitimacy of the ruling elite, making the history of Colombia during the decades prior to the escalation of violence less exceptional than we have assumed. This is a must-read for anyone interested in how democracy is an ongoing, contingent project in a permanent state of expansion and contraction."

Palenque de San Basilio had its Pacific mirrors in Colombia and Ecuador:
Communities of Maroons that took advantage of the ghastly impact of the plagues to withdraw deeper into the interior than the white man could comfortably follow them, building cities, acquiring weapons and a xenophobia sufficient to keep the Spanish Empire at bay. The effort succeeded, and as with the Atlantic city so here did Black people establish enclaves for themselves in the 1680s and 1690s.
To repeat, a full century before the final consolidation of the United States and almost two centuries before the United States was forced by United States Colored Troops rallying to the tune of being one in four of the fighting soldiers of the US Army of that time, there were communities in South America that fought for freedom and won it by the musket.
