i think one of the worst things you can teach young/new musicians is that Western Music Theory is the One Music Theory You Must Know and it SUUUUCKS because practically every music teacher does this. it makes learning and writing contemporary and interesting music very difficult because you're doing it through this lens of 18th century functional harmony like BRO
I'd say that it's good or even critical to know if you ARE writing "western" music, but I feel like it's denying yourself more influences and a deeper understanding of what makes music MUSIC if you never try to understand harmony and rhythm in other ways.
and not to say you can't do very creative things with this, some of the most influential jazz and conteporary classical artists push these systems to their limits (Bartok, Coltrane, and others i think LOL) which is AWESOME. but they both included non-western (non-white) influences in their music.
