So I read the Coraline novella for the first time today and rewatched the movie (because why not), and the novella is actually excellent. The prose is so detailed that it's inspiring as a writer, and it's difficult to articulate how good it is, but it's fantastic. It sucked me in immediately and kept me engaged the whole time.

One of my favorite moments from the novella is this lovely monologue Coraline has near the end, where she recounts a memory of her dad, and I kind of wish it was in the movie (I kind of understand why it isn't, though, considering runtime and all that). She wanted to go exploring and he took her, but then they had to flee from a swarm of wasps. Without hesitation, her dad told her to run, staying behind so that the wasps would attack him and not his daughter.

However, later, he would say that he wasn't being brave in that moment because he wasn't scared. He was acting on pure parental instinct, so protecting Coraline was the only option in his mind (which is already so 🥺)

The time he believed he was exhibiting true bravery was when he went back to get his glasses, because he already knew how dangerous the wasps were, and was actually afraid in that moment. Because in his mind, and I believe this is absolutely true, one can only exhibit true bravery if they're scared to do something and yet do it anyway.

This lesson from her dad is what convinces Coraline to go back to save her parents (besides them being her parents and how much she loves them, obviously). She's terrified out of her mind, but she goes back to save them anyway because she wants to exhibit true bravery as her dad did. And she knows her parents would do the same for her (and already have in the past).

Also, this screenshot from the movie is so adorable, like look at them all being happy, and little Coraline holding a teddy bear 😭

About the last post. I remember thinking how weird it was for witch parents to name their child "Raine", since in the Boiling Isles rain is dangerous and can hurt you. (It gives the same vibes as Wybie from Coraline being named "Whyborn")

But then I realized that maybe that wasn't their birth name, maybe Raine chose that name when they transitioned. Which means that baby Raine basically named themselves the witch version of "Acid". No wonder Eda thought they were so cool

gaz ᰔ had never heard of coraline before, but can't resist once he hears your excitement while you recite bits of the plot. finds the parts w/ wybie & coraline the most amusing. makes you pause anytime he gets up; he's deeply intrigued. when he comes back, he's humming the mouse circus song + probably will for days to come.

It's 2028. A very old and skinny black tomcat rests on Coraline's lap as she sits in her parents' garden. She's thirty now, living with her husband, and The Pink Palace has been quiet for some time. Ms. Spink and Forcible have finally joined all their beloved Scotties across the rainbow bridge, Coraline's parents now live in what had been the two ladies' part of the house, and Mr. Bobinski has long-since retired from his famous jumping mouse circus. Things have been peaceful. And today, a new family moves in. A family with a young kid, about eleven years old. Coraline feels a twist of anxiety in her stomach, and her hand subconsciously traces her throat, remembering when the Beldam's severed hand had dragged her by her necklace, choking her.

Wybie looks away from his conversation with the new neighbors to check on his blue-haired wife, who still looks as beautiful to him as the day he'd met her.

"She's gone." He mouths to her, head fully tilted, seeing her distress.

Coraline looks down at the cat, who nods as if in agreement, his blue eyes full of wisdom he can no longer share. Coraline smiles. They're right. The Beldam is long gone. The Pink Palace is safe.

Rewatching Coraline and here are some things I've noticed so far:

-When Coraline goes to visit Mrs. Spink and Mrs. Forcable, the card on the top of the pile on the table is the five of hearts, but then the pot of candy is removed, it's a four of spades.

-The vehicle The Other Father is driving is a praying mantis, (pretty sure) which is ironic, considering he is killed by his 'wife' in technicality

-The 'Soul' Ring is shown during the performance scene when Coraline is picked up from the crowd

-The Other Mother's red outfit can be slightly seen under her normal clothes when asking Coraline to sew in buttons, possibly representing how her true colours are showing

-Coraline's Other Father has different glasses to her actual father

-The Mouse circus has a 'R' on the 'walls'

-The set of draws shown mere seconds into the film is the bug that blocks Coraline from the Door

-By the mirror where Coraline gets trapped, there is a painting of (I think) her house

-The mask Wybie uses when he pulls Coraline out of the mirror is the chicken oven glove used earlier by the Other Mother

-Coraline naturally has brown hair, shown in a photo after she realises her parents are missing and visits Spink & Forcible

-When Coraline's parents are shown in the mirror, her father is wearing glasses, even though Coraline used his glasses when making her fake parents. They are different types of glasses, though, so it's possible he just has two pairs.

-when Coraline goes through the portal, it's no longer blue and purple, possibly showing how the illusion has been broken.

-The wallpaper in the normal world is vaguely floral, whereas in the other world, it's of beetles.

-When the other mother's creations are destroyed, a sand like substance spills out. It could be a reference to how dry clay crumbles when broken as a link to the book

-Before the whole plot, the snow globe had two figures by the fountain, but when they 'break out' the figures are gone

-The thing holding up Coraline's picture of her friends is a preying mantis

-Coraline's trousers are patched up with the fabric from the star shirt she got from the Other Mother

-The well is designed to look a lot like the tunnel portal

-Coraline has a pinkish mark around her throat when they throw the Other Mother's hand into the well, but it is gone in the next scene, which is funny because a lot of characters have some kind of red 'ring' on them, like the dog's red collars and a bunch of other examples

That is all! I am fully aware that I'm probably wrong with multiple observations and that is okay :)

I saw in your list of characters that you write for Coraline, I haven't seen anyone writing for her, so I'm gonna request something for my beloved girl if that's okay.

Okay, So, What about a lil fic (or One-Shot, you name it) or some Headcanons, about her falling in love for a fem!reader her age living in the pink palace? And so, when she goes to the other world there is an "other" (y/n) who tells her this when they meet "what are ya doing here Coraline?? The other me will be so worried! She'll think you leaved her forever! Just like her other friends did!"

i’m so glad you request this!! i love coraline and it is a shame no one writes for her :/ also i hope you don’t mind if i added one small part, reader is mentioned to be immortal or at least never aging, but i added it for good reason. trust me it makes it a lot better then when i wrote this originally

Y/n sits down in the grass waiting for Coraline. She'd grown close with the blue haired girl over the time she had been here. It was hard for her to grow close to anyone after losing so many people, but she had faith in Coraline. The Beldam would be no match for her Coraline. Maybe she'd even set her other self free. It was only a matter of time until the other mother got sick of the doll's disobedience and eventually destroyed her and reused her parts.

Maybe then she wouldn't feel so empty inside. It was like apart of her was missing, and in ways it was. A part of her soul was borrowed by the other mother and was used to entice her friends and kill them, stealing their eyes and making her stronger. As long as that part of her was in the other world she was unable to grow old. She would only be free when that part of her was let go.

Y/n continues to wait for the girl. Where was she? When Coraline makes a promise she sticks to it. Y/n plays with her fingers anxiously, what if something bad happened to her.

Coraline was so excited to see everything in the other world. She hadn't even went to bed. "Oh Coraline! Y/n is here for you! She wants to take you and Wybie to see Mr. Bobinsky's circus! Isn't that fun." The Beldam smiles at her 'daughter'. Coraline was easier to manipulate than anticipating. The Beldam was thankful for those parents of hers.

"Oh y/n's here! Sweet!" The other mother nods and opens the door fully to show the two preteens standing outside. Wybie smiles at Coraline and y/n waves softly. "Oh Wybie"

"Don't worry dear this is other Wybie. You'll find he's a bit less talkative then real Wybie." Coraline sighs but goes with the two anyways. She waves goodbye to her other mother and happily skips off. Y/n stays behind for a few seconds. She looks at the Beldam expectantly.

The Beldam sighs. "Get along now y/n. Face it, you've lost. Maybe after this I'll finally let you grow old and die. A shame you won't see your friends when you're dead." The other y/n lowers her head slightly before the Beldam yells at her to go.

Y/n follows Coraline upstairs. Right when she tries to enter y/n grabs her arm. Wybie stands there knowing what was happening. Even as one of her tools he never really listened to the Beldam. It was like he knew what was her plan as well. "Wha, what's going on y/n. Don't you want to see the circus again?"

"What are you doing here Coraline?" Y/n speaks softly so Bobinsky can't hear from inside and report to the Beldam.

Coraline giggles. "I'm hanging out with you. What do you mean?"

Y/n remains still. The buttons in her eyes doing little to reflect her emotions. "No, Coraline what are you doing here. The other me will miss you if you're gone for too long. She gets scared when she doesn't see you."

"What? What do you mean y/n."

"Please go home Coraline. She'll think you abandoned her like her other friends did. She hates being left forever. I don't think she can handle that again."

Coraline looks to Wybie whose smile has now fallen. He looks around awkwardly before nodding at Coraline. "She loves you, don't do this to her."

Y/n sighs and gets up from the dewey grass. Coraline wasn't coming after all. Maybe it was time she just went home. It was dumb of her to think Coraline was different from her friends. Maybe her love for the girl just made her hope for something that was impossible to avoid.

Wybie's Grandmother's Twin Sister/The Sweet Ghost Girl, theory/headcanon on her disappearance.

In the movie we know Wybie's grandmother, used to live in the Pink Palace before it was separated into apartments. She also had a twin sister, and her sister had a doll that looked exactly like her.

Somewhere around in the 1950's her sister mysteriously disappeared one day and Mrs. Lovat believed she was "stolen."

When Wybie's grandmother became the landlady of the Pink Palace, she split it into three apartments, in fear that history will repeat itself and that the same fate will happen to a different child. (It's possible that she was learning the history of the Pink Palace previous people with children in her town's library). She made a rule, that any tenants with children aren't allowed to rent the apartment.

When she moved out of the Pink Palace, she kept the doll and hidden it so no one can ever find it. As years went by she got married, had a daughter, but...she had a divorce (when she tried to explain to her husband, how she was haunted by the other mother stealing her sister, having nightmares of her sister slowly dying, and how she keeps blaming her for not being able to save her, he believes that she was crazy and immediately wanted a divorce).

She didn't care what he thinks, but was saddened when she can only see her daughter on the weekends. She did her best to be a good mother, but she forbid her from going to the Pink Palace. When her daughter finds a photo of her as a child, she asks who the other girl is.

She explains the girl is her late aunt, and that she was stolen, curious she asks what happened to her. (Not wanting to mention the doll or the other mother, she decided to make it more realistic). It was almost Halloween their mother was getting the house ready for the holiday, while their father was at work. They were in their room (which becomes Coraline's room in the present/future). Showing their costumes she was a Cowgirl, while her sister was going out as a fairy.

Things were going well, until their mother entered the room saying they won't be able to go, because their father wants them in a business meeting to show his superiors he's a family man. They were angered by their father's news, and that they won't even have any time to go trick or treating when the meetings over. (After they leave the room, the doll's been sitting on the bed watching the whole thing).

It was Halloween 4:15pm, everyone was in the car, but before they can leave, her father sees that one of his daughters isn't there, he asked where she was, she and her mother told him she's been in their room all day, while they were gardening.

Her and her parents went into their room to look for her, but she wasn't their her parents think she must've gone trick or treating, but she couldn't because her fairy costume was still on her bed. The family ran outside in the car, hoping she didn't get far. (Unknown to them, there was a key on the floor in the living room, and the doll was near the window, watching them as they panicked).

A week went by, they called the police letting them know of their missing daughter. The police asked if she'd been behaving strange lately, (her parents mentioned that she was having dreams of an other mother and where the world is perfect, but they say they're just dreams). The police searched and searched but they couldn't find her sister, her parents became depressed and overprotective ever since. (She became depressed aswell, she blamed herself for losing her only friend and felted she wasn't able to keep her safe).

After she finished the story, her daughter sees tears coming out of her eyes, she gives her hug and she hugged her back. As her daughter grows older, she finds the doll has changed its appearance. Scared she decides to hide it again, after seeing her daughter was pregnant.

One rainy day she was babysitting her 6 year old grandson Wyborne. Her daughter left to go to work, she'd be usually home by 5pm, but when she heard a knock on the door, she was shocked to see its the police they explained while she was a driving home, some drunk teenage jerks was driving their neighbors car, because the rain made the road slippery, there was an accident.

Heartbroken she becomes Wyborne's guardian and makes sure he doesn't go too the Pink Palace or finds the doll. (In fear the 0ther Mother would become his next victim just like her sister).

Before, Coraline and her family moved into the Pink Palace Apartments. She had a dream/nightmare that she was back in the apartment she finds Wyborne in pain, she walks up to him and asks what's wrong. Wyborne looks at her, his eyes are black buttons just like the doll, he looks like if he's been crying but his tears are blood.

Before she can reach to him, a small door opens revealing a green portal a giant hand comes out, made out of sewing needles it grabs Wyborne the portal dissappears with just a brick wall.

She wakes up realizing it was a nightmare, she checks on Wyborne seeing him sleeping peacefully. Not wanting her nightmare to come true, she grabs the doll and hides it in her trunk of her car.

Wild Kratts coraline au because brainrot. It’s spooky season and we need the spooky au’s. Ngl this was a tough one but I love Wild Kratts and I love Coraline, sooo-

The idea is that Chris is Coraline, a young child who is unhappy with his families move into an old house in the middle of nowhere known as the Pink Palace. He never wanted to move, but unfortunately had to do so, leaving him bitter and angry. In this au, he is about 14 years old, and Martin is a 18.

Martin is something I mulled over for a while, stuck between Wybie and the mother. I stuck with Martin taking the role as the mother, though of course not in the parental sense. Their parents died in the car crash that Coraline mentions in the beginning of the film, leaving Martin as the legal guardian of Chris at just 18 years of age.

As for Aviva and Koki, I decided to put them in the role of Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. I don’t particularly ship Aviva and Koki, (though I do think it’s cute), but finding roles for them in this setting was somewhat difficult. You can view them as married, like the actual characters, or you can view these two as friends living together, doesn’t matter to me. They’re both rather odd in Chris’ opinion. I don’t think the girls would be as old as the actual characters are, but they may be a little older than Martin here. Aviva still makes inventions and other gadgets, but the girls also are into theatre, just like the real Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. They give Chris advice, warning him that danger is coming for the boy, weirding him out as he does not understand what this danger could possibly be.

As for Jimmy, I set him as Wybie. I think they both have the similar aspect of being a nice dude who’s just a little odd, and someone Chris could become good friends with. Jimmy is the same age as Chris and lives with his grandmother, who teaches him her recipes. He finds Chris as Chris is exploring the woods around the Pink Palace, revealing to him that the last kid who lived there disappeared mysteriously, the kid happening to be his grandmothers sister. He is also the one who gives Chris the doll of himself, weirding Chris out.

Mr. Bobibski was a difficult role, but I gave it to Zach. Why? Because Mr. Bobibski is really theatric and a little weird (kinda like Zach), and I think Zach would fit this role. Also it’s a little ironic with the jumping mice thing, so there’s that. Zach serves as the neighbor that Chris at first assumed to be crazy.

The move is due to Martin believing Chris would want a change of scenery, Martin taking his college courses online now that he cannot go on campus. He is struggling to take care of his brother on top of doing college work, so he doesn’t have much time for Chris at the moment, who wanted to go adventuring. The recent loss, the move and the decrease in time spent together between the brothers results in them both fighting and arguing, straining their relationship.

It was a rainy day, Chris itching to go out and explore as there was nothing else to do but unpack, which was something he wasn’t really looking forward to doing. He begs his brother to ket him go outside, only to be told no- as he’ll get wet and possibly sick from being out in the rain. Irritated, Chris walks around the house, following his brother’s instructions to keep himself busy by counting the windows and doors in the house. He takes the doll Jimmy gave him with him, setting it on a table as he counts the windows and the painting in the family room, before realizing that the doll had disappeared, ending up across the room behind a box. Pushing the box aside, he comes to find what looks like a door beneath the wallpaper and begs for Chris to open it. Much to his disappointment, it is bricked up.

It is at night where things really begin. Chris was unhappy with what Martin had made for dinner, calling it disgusting and “not real food”, according to him. Martin insists that he eats it as this as all they have at the moment, or else he can just go to bed. Choosing bed over “slime”, Chris heads upstairs only to be awoken by the sound of a mouse scurrying through the dark. Curiously, he gets up and follows the mouse downstairs and into the family room, the small creature disappearing behind the door. Chris opens it to find, to his amazement, there is now a glowing tunnel leading to what looks like another door.

Crawling through and out the other side, Chris finds himself standing in the family room yet again- but instead of being met with the cold darkness of an empty room, he finds himself in a warm glow emitting from a light on in the kitchen. Confused, he walks into the kitchen only to find Martin standing there.

“Martin? What are you doing up?”

But when the figure turns around to face him, it wasn’t Martin. Because Martin didn’t have button eyes.

Oh I actually had an idea to draw Eda and Raine as Coraline and Wybie for October last year (but I ended up drawing this instead). Except Eda was Coraline and Raine was Wybie lol.

Raine as Coraline fits with both of them having blue hair and moving to a new place with their parents. Terra as the Other Mother is a perfect fit.

I think that she would first appear like one of Raine's moms, but with buttons for eyes, like in the movie. But then she reveals her true appearance as the Beldam.

Those two old ladies that ran the cat shop in the Body Swap episode can be Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. Bump can be Mr. Bobinsky. Since Eda is Wybie, Owlbert is the cat.

And Evelyn is Wybie's grandma. But instead of her sister that went missing, maybe it was her former lover Caleb.
