Speaking to the Observer, Prof John Edmunds of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who was a member of the Sage committee of advisers to ministers and who has submitted written evidence to the inquiry, said the controversial Eat Out to Help Out scheme – which gave people discounts for eating in restaurants and pubs – was never discussed with scientists.

“If we had [been consulted], I would have been clear what I thought about it,” said Edmunds. “As far as I am concerned, it was a spectacularly stupid idea and an obscene way to spend public money.”

Eat Out to Help Out was launched in August 2020. It allowed diners to claim 50% off more than 160m meals at a cost to the Treasury of about £850m. In the process, it also drove new Covid-19 infections up by between 8 and 17%, according to a study carried out by Thiemo Fetzer, an economist at the University of Warwick, a few weeks later.

Edmunds said the Sage scientists had no real role in shaping policies across government. “We were asked questions and gave scientific answers but we didn’t know what strategy was being discussed by the government. It was written by them and we saw it the same day that the press saw it.

“They never said: ‘Here’s the strategy, what do you think of it?’ That’s not how it worked and that is why it’s always been so misleading for the government to pretend that it was following science. That’s just nonsense.”

Medics and bereaved relatives have previously called for the return of measures such as mask wearing and better sick pay as the pandemic continues to spread.

It comes as coronavirus rates continue to tick up - with more than 200,000 people now dead from the disease, and almost 3.5m currently infected.

In London, at the start of the month Covid hospital admissions increased by a fifth in a week.

“But nobody’s wearing a mask anymore because we’ve been told we don’t need to. “People are going about their daily lives and it’s still a really nasty illness, for some. “This new variant especially is affecting people more… people seem to be sicker.”

Dr Applebee, chairman of the doctors’ branch of Unite the Union, called for mask wearing, better ventilation, and improved sick pay for NHS staff.

“It’s such a small thing to wear a mask and such a small thing to get proper ventilation in indoor spaces, public transport, and measure the CO2 levels,” she said.

Haven't posted one of these in a while but hospitalisations in England due to coronavirus haven't gone away, look at the figure for July this year. And there has been a big increase month on month from September to October.

If you are entitled to your fourth booster please go and get it. If you feel ill with coronavirus symptoms please try and test. And if you test positive don't just go about your normal daily activities - you might feel okay but it could be a really serious illness for the person you infect.

This winter please remember that covid isn't over and the NHS is under a huge amount of strain and please behave accordingly.
