I know I'm four years late to the party but I worked out the timeline for Harry's epic pre-game bender and the feelings need out. HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE THIS KIND OF ANIMAL ANYMORE. :(
Sooo... Harry told the Major Crimes Unit to fuck off on Friday, and immediately started partying because he'd "solve the case in no time". Saturday night he jumped the floodgate with his car, destroying it and losing his badge and his uniform in the process. Idiot Doom Spiral said he was devastated by that, and also vaguely suicidal at this point. Sunday nigh Harry mostly tries to drink, but ends up waving his gun about threatening to kill himself in earnest. People get understandably upset by that, and Harry sells his gun, sans bullets. He decides he doesn't want to be this kind of animal (pig?! human?!) anymore and flushes the Ledger of Failure and Hatred (with the promotion for crippling Burke, which Harry didn't accept; with the two cases that resulted in his previous blackouts; with that damn postcard; the ledger that tells Harry to kill himself, asshole) down the toilet.
I wonder how exactly Saturday and Sunday went down. He couldn't do the field autopsy without a second officer present. But he has already been to the yard and talked with Cuno. He even tried getting into the harbour via the rooftops. Did the Hanged Man talk to him? Did that conversation go as badly as it did in the dream after the autopsy? Did Harry try to escape, both times by jumping over a barrier and getting drunk out of his mind? If that is how it went down then Trant is right about the bender being a defense mechanism: Harry avoided the corpse and the ledger that were trying to talk him into suicide; He left his badge with the promotion for police brutality behind; He sold the gun he came close to using on himself.
He just... arrived in Martinaise and stripped the policeman off, bit by bit. And the "good ending" has him recover all those bits again, the ledger, the coat, the car, the gun, even the tape, and finally his unit. He goes right back to being the same kind of animal he was when he arrived on the scene.
Which is a pig. When he wants to be a giant, curious stick insect that loves collecting trinkets and memories, who says "I exist" and is scared of being forgotten and alone. Because if he didn't have to be a cop (for the joke that is Nix Gottlieb's healthcare?) he could be scary (warn others of the apocalypse) and beautiful (superstar 😘) and kind (instead of getting promoted for permanently disabling someone). OF ALL THE CREATURES I HAVE MET YOU ARE THE THE SCARIEST, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, THE KINDEST. OH GOD. JUST GIVE ME HARRY THE HOBOCOP AND LEPLANTE, MOVING IN WITH ISOBEL AND LEARNING HOW TO NOT BE PIGS TOGETHER. EVEN KIM SAYS HE'S GOING TO DIE IN THE FORCE. COPS KILL, BEING A COP KILLS AND NEITHER HARRY NOR KIM NOR LEPLANTE SEE AN ALTERNATIVE. I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO RECRUIT CUNO OR TITUS ANYMORE. HOW DO I UNLOCK THE ENDING WHERE I GET KIM AND JEAN AND JUDIT FIRED. AND CHESTER AND TORSON TOO. FUCK YOU CAPTAIN PRYCE. I SAW THAT LAST ESPRIT DE CORPS CHECK YOU WANT HARRY TO BE UNHINGED AND BASH PEOPLE'S SKULLS IN AGAIN WHEN THE NEXT WAVE OF MERCENARIES COMES IN DON'T YOU. FUCK YOU GOTTLIEB. LIZ HELP. LIZ PLEASE. LIZ YOU'RE A LAWYER YOU CAN FIX THIS PLEASE ALL HE NEEDS IS TIME ELECTROCHEMISTRY SAID SO AND ELECTROCHEMISTRY IS NEVER WRONG.

“The squad drive into the last stop in Texas; El Paso. But tensions rise when they see the blue lights baring down on them. Will they be ok when confronting the long arm of the law?” Alright, so... The next couple of chapters are gonna be...... Tense, let's say. They will be emotional and dramatic, and I'm sure some people will have a few pretty hard feels attached to them. That said, if you can survive both this chapter and the next one, I promise there's gonna be a hot springs chapter right after it. That said, I hope this isn't too traumatizing for people.

UK politics this weekend in a nutshell:
Friday we had the results of Thursdays local elections and the Conservatives lost a fuck ton of seats on councils across the country.
Saturday was the coronation. Do we think it's a coincidence that the Nepotist In Chief's Idiot Hat Party happened on a weekend when the Tories would have been certain of sweeping defeats? It's certainly sus.
Also Saturday: over 50 protestors were arrested during coronation hours. All arrested using anti protest laws which didn't exist until 4 days ago and suggest guilt before action. Despite this obvious abuse of power, the news stories about this are couched in between fluff stories about the special party.
Essentially: The UK is a monarchical police state which is using scheduling conflicts as passive propaganda.

The Chip
Cw: mentions of alcoholism and implied relapse, mcd and stalking, unhelpful police, unkind hospital staff
Caretaker was a mess when Whumpee disappeared. That was their best friend. And NO ONE seemed to believe that they were in any danger! ‘They left a note!’ Ok so there was a note. It was typed and didn’t sound like Whumpee at all in Caretaker’s opinion.
17 months later, Whumpee was found, left for dead in an abandoned building. Whatever had happened to them, Caretaker would likely never know but their purpose was deemed over. Whumpee spent the next month in the hospital recovering.
During this month, Caretaker spent it recovering as well, from the alcoholism they developed over the time that Whumpee was gone. They were told by Whumpee’s Social Worker that if they could provide a One Month chip by the time Whumpee was discharged, that they could take Whumpee into their care.
Caretaker had never worked so hard. There were sleepless nights and awful days and Caretaker thought this was the worst thing they could ever feel, next to when Whumpee was missing, but they did it.
Whumpee cried tears of joy for their best friend when they proudly held up their chip at the time of discharge. That meant no rehab center until a placement, Whumpee could go home.
During the next few weeks, Whumpee and Caretaker became more and more concerned that they were being pursued by someone. Weird things kept happening. Cars seemed to follow them, but Caretaker was always able to shake them. And Whumpee was sure they’d seen Whumper a few times watching in public spaces, so they became more and more recluse. They tried seeking help from the local police, but who would believe a recovering alcoholic who’d spent many a night in jail during the last year and someone branded mentally unstable due to trauma?
It wasn’t until Whumper had shown up the evening before Caretaker’s 2 Month Chip ceremony and successfully stabbed Whumpee that the police took any action. Caretaker managed to take Whumper by surprise and knocked them out. The police and ambulance service showed up, whisking everyone away to jail and hospital but Whumpee was in bad shape. Still in their dress clothes, Caretaker sat miserably in the waiting room.
Upon hearing the news that Whumpee didn’t make it, Caretaker was sent away. After all, they weren’t family. “But I was their caretaker.” “Just because you cared for them doesn’t make us legally obligated to let you in. You weren’t. Related. Family. Only. Read. The sign.” With every punctuation, the nurse tapped the sign with her pen.
Sighing in defeat, Caretaker said “Can you do one thing for me?” “What?” The nurse was more than annoyed at this point. “Please make sure that this stays with them,” Caretaker handed the nurse their One Month Chip, “it meant more to them than anything.”
“Won’t you need this?”
“Not anymore.”

new anon hi, i feel like the disconnect between 'this is a crime romance there's going to be copaganda in it' and the critisms comes directly from the source with what shes writing like you said. I would be willing to suspend my disbelief that all cops and the agency were good and not corrupt for the sake of the story if the story showed us that instead of having the cops shoot people for no reason and be basically useless and the agency literally having a punishment system based around constant possibly eternal punishment. Like I know the agency is actively working against the cops to keep the supernatural stuff a secret but they always feel so... useless? Like we aren't shown them solving anything outside of Mc working with ub and the complete culture of secrecy around the agency makes it basically impossible for me to trust them.
you can see a similar pattern with how the story treats the ageny and rebecca tbh, we're just supposed to accept that these authority figures have whats best for us at heart and forgive when they keep important information secret even when it gets people killed and any attempt at distrusting them is punished by the narrative and characters around us. i don't even think mishka is aware shes doing it honestly but it really says a lot about her worldview lmao
DUDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY
im sorry i took a while to answer this but literally. literally this is IT. YOU GET WHAT I WAS SAYING
like you said, this is absolutely indicative of her worldview – the things she's written are definitely fucked but as fans we would be more comfortable (if you can even call it that) with it if there were any kind of criticisms happening in text – or pushback from the mc that had any kind of weight on the plot. but... instead here we are :-)
i really have nothing more to add, you've said it all!

hii can you tell more about the title of chp 10?
ahh panopticon!
a panopticon prison is when there's a single guard tower overlooking a large number of cells. if the windows are blacked out, there's no way to tell if you're being watched or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The authority changes from being a limited physical entity to being an internalized omniscience - the prisoners discipline themselves simply because someone might be watching, eliminating the need for more physical power to accomplish the same task. (x)
and then foucault, brilliant/annoying as he was, was like. HMMMM how can i intellectualize this! and he connected it to the idea that all citizens self-police our behaviour even when no one is watching. that we have strict ideas of socially expected (and acceptable) behaviour. and i'm a queer theory bitch and i wrote a paper on the panopticon in school, so ofc i have to bring it into my fics lmaoo.
panopticon theory has informed how i've written steve, who is overly aware of his behaviour and how it's perceived by people around him. and beyond that, he self-polices his behaviour (and his thoughts!) as if he's being constantly watched. his idea of acceptable behaviour is also closely linked to heteronormative standards — like what would a straight guy do or think in this situation? even though no one is really watching him that closely.
it comes up in a lot of ways in ch 10 especially. he sits on the bus and looks around him, trying to figure out if he can see gay men from sight alone. for steve, a big part of being in the closet is adhering to specific social standards that he holds himself to, and not necessarily ones that other people would be holding him to. it's coming from the Self 💙 which is painful to untangle, but he's getting there.

Police
I'm scared of police. They love power. Some love hurting people. I walk away when I see them on the streets. All of those devices on their belt. They can hurt me easily if they wanted to. My dad was an officer. I'm not scared of him. But I don't like to think about it.
