I don't want to hear anymore excuses." he said after taking a sip of whiskey in a glass cup. you slump down into the couch, feeling defeated. "but dad these dates are getting out of hand!"u try to reason with your father, he sighs and turns the TV on. "you have to go get ready, you have a date at 7:30pm." U looked at the clock, 7:00pm , shit.

"are you kang taehyun?" U said to guy who sitting in the corner of the restaurant you both agreed to meet at. (Your father's put this together) he looks at you and smiles slightly. "yes. I am" he says with a slight bow, still sitting down. u take a seat and cross ur legs from the knees down. U take a sip of the tea that was sitting there already. "so, what's your favorite color" he says with a small smile. U can't help but laugh at the random question. "Interesting question to ask on the first date, but it's red." U smile back at him, "I'm not really good at these arranged dates" he says looking down, fixing his suit. "Me either, despite being on so many" u speak softly, trying to take in his natural beauty. He must've saved the country with how beautiful he is. "do you like something u see?" smiles as he slowly leans in, placing his elbows on the table, u cough slightly nodding ur head as in no. "who the fuck shredded the contract." he spoke sternly to his employees, sighing while untightening his tie and unbuttoning the first button of his button up. A girl held her head low, not trying to show her face to the president of her job. "we are sorry mr.Kang.." the head of team spoke up for the rest of them , getting on their knees as they signaled for them all to do the same. "sorry won't cut it Daniel. Until someone speaks up you all aren't getting paid." They all looked at the president, in shock they started pleading as the girl from before scooted closer to mr.kang's feet and started to plead. "mr.kang I'm so sorry I didn't know it was important...I'll never make the same mistake again!" She begged. He snickers and signs to his secretary, "get her out of here." He said as he walked away. The employees looked at the girl in shock as she started to tear up getting up from her knees and to her desk to clear it.

"And what did you hear mrs.robinson say to mr.robinson?" you stood over the table, looking the teenage girl in the eyes. "she said that she will kill him no matter what" she spoke softly into the mic on the table, "Thank you stacy" u smiled at her and turned around, "that's all your honor."you said and went to ur seat.

"How was the trial?" your friend said after taking a sip of her beer , "long and tiring. I'm so tired of this job" u sighed and laid ur head on the table. She reaches out to pat ur head , "you'll be fine y/n. OH! that's right, my sister was fired today!"emma spoke quite loud, u put ur head back up suddenly intrigued. "really? Why did jess get fired?"U asked her, "she shredded a important contract I guess , but the president was so harsh on her" she said whole taking a piece of chicken from the box you had on ur coffee table, you both were sitting on the floor of your apartment, it's been 2 years since you had moved out of your dad's house , leaving since the constant arranged dates and nagging to get married,

"y/n It's been a year since you had a boyfriend, why did you and that mr.kang guy break up?" One said , "you and that kang guy were so cute together. Too bad you can't keep a relationship" another spoke , "just text him , I bet he would answer."

it's been 1 year since you and taehyun had broken up. you guys dated for a few months until you both called it quits because of the colliding personal life's. You were a prosecutor and he was the president of a huge company, one wanted to get married the other didn't.

"y/n let's just get married" he tried to reason with you while he sat on the edge of the shared bed and you stood in the door way . "taehyun you know I don't want to." You rubbed your forehead, feeling a headache coming. "But why. You dont ever want to tell me, is it because you don't want to marry me?" He spoke the last word soft and quiet. "It's not like that babe. I just don't want to get married at 29. Maybe when I'm 34 or 35." , "I don't want to be that old before getting married..." he held his head low. "Then why dont you just leave?" You regretted what you said the second you said it. Why did you say that? "What?.." he looked at you like a lost puppy. "We both can't satisfy eachothers needs. We're different, we both knew this relationship wouldn't last. I hope u find someone for you. " U said grabbing ur bag , turning around to leave, but he stopped you. "Y/n if you leave right now I seriously won't forgive you."his voice was shaky, as if he was already sobbing. When u turned ur head around u saw the pain in his eyes. In his face. "If you leave...it's over" he whispered, not wanting to say it. "goodbye tae." You said as u got out of his grip and walked out the apartment you both shared. Tears already falling as you walked to ur car.

you felt like crying whenever you thought of that moment. you knew the relationship went to shit because of you and you regretted it. But getting married was all too soon, you still wanted to have your own space. You sighed as ur friend went on and on about her sister being fired by your ex.

you knew your dad's health was deteriorating. You knew he wouldn't have much time left , and you knew this meant you had to get married, quickly. So when u visited your dad at the hospital you decided to tell him you'll get married to whoever he arranges you with.

"Dad."

"yes y/n"

"Set me up with a man who has intentions on getting married."

"Really?"

"Yes"

Half a week later

you were nervous waiting for your date to show up. Scared that you knew you had to get married to them since you promised your dad the last time you saw him. Checking the time on ur phone nervously double checking to see if you came too early. Or maybe too late and he already left. When you looked up ur heart stopped.

"Terry please go on this date, she wants to get married. Do it for us." His parents pleaded with him. He sighs and nods. He had to go to this date. He promised his parents that the next date he gets set on he would marry her, since he rejected so many dates after you.

"what the.." you whisper. He looks even better than before. How is that even possible? To your surprise he sits down. He checks his watch hoping the time would go faster. You both knew you had to get married at the end of the day. But the past is seeping through the walls , he tried not to start a fight since you both were in public. "I guess it was me after all." He ends up deciding to be petty. U lightly scoff n look out the window of the restaurant, "I have to get married."you say through gritted teeth, "now u have to? Didn't we have to get married back then?"he stares out the window as well, both of you guys not wanting to make eye contact. " taehyun it was different back then." you sigh rubbing ur head feeling a headache coming. He looks at you, knowing how you would get headaches often. He almost asked if you were okay. Almost. "How was it different? What's different now??" He says making u look at him, you felt your throat become dry and scratchy. You didn't want to tell him your father was dying but he would just keep fighting with you if you didn't. Building up some courage you started to speak. "Because my father is dying."you spoke with a shaky voice. Like how he sounded back then. His death glare turned soft and sad. He just stared at you not knowing what to say. He tries to open his mouth to say something but nothing comes out.

After a few moments of silence he speaks up again."i..didn't know." He whispers. U laugh slightly, "how would you know." He shrugs, looking around as the atmosphere became awkward. "Lets just get married taehyun. I won't be a bother to you since I'm always at the office."you say grabbing ur bag and getting up to leave. "Okay. Let's get married."

4 months later

It was your wedding day. Your whole family was here , even your friends. They say this will be your happiest moment. That this only happens once and it’s great to get married but really , was it your happiest moment? Will this just happen once? And is it really great to get married? You were stuck in your thoughts until you heard your friends voice , “helloooooooo y/n are you there?” You were startled by the sudden voice filling the quiet room. “Oh hey Emma” u smile as she takes a seat in the bench you were sat on, “who would know you would get married to your ex” she slightly laughed, u smile softly and nod. “Who would’ve thought..” you looked down at your dress. It was long and beautiful, anyone would be happy to be in your spot right now, marrying a wonderful and handsome man. But that wonderful and handsome man was your ex. The man you left, you didn’t deserve to be in this spot and you know it, “also y/n I’m sorry I missed your fathers funeral. I really loved him, he treated me well.”Emma hugged you softly, feeling bad for not making it. “It’s all good” you mumbled, fighting back tears that threatened to spill. “Your husband looks really good by the way.” She says trying to lighten the mood. You laugh at the sudden sentence, “I bet he does look good, he’s taehyun.”

“Please bring out the bride!” Your friend exclaimed at the alter, you took a deep breath in trying to calm your nerves. Breathing out as the doors open, you walked down to the stage alone, this should’ve been done with my dad. You thought as you reached your soon-to-be husband. You both slightly bowed to each other , showing respect. You stood in front of him, your ex. He looked annoyed,mad,and upset. Rightfully so, if this was a year ago he would look so in-love and happy but you ruined it. you looked down at your feet that weren’t visible due to the white dress covering them.

“Do you, Kang taehyun , take (ur full name) to be your wife?”

“I do.”

“and do you, (ur full name) , take Kang taehyun to be your husband?”

“yes..i do”

“With the power invested in me, you are now husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride”

“that won’t be necessary.”

The drive back to the house your father bought for you and your new husband was silent. Awkward even, though you were married you both weren’t happy. You looked over to taehyun who was undoing his tie n throwing it in the backseat. He unbuttoned the first two buttons n sighed heavily, “just because we’re married doesn’t mean we will sleep in the same room, you’ll sleep in the guest bedroom or whatever. I don’t care.” He said as he pulled into the drive way.”fine with me.” U mutter as u open the car door , slamming it as u closed it hoping to make taehyun made since you knew he loved his car more than anything. “So fucking petty.” He whispered and opened the door to the house. You both walk in and go your separate ways, you going to the guest room and him going to what you assume, his office.

you were laying on the couch , remote in one hand and the other hand in a bag of chips. You were watching king the land as you heard a knock on the door later followed by the passcode being put in, “who the..?” U whispered as u paused ur show and sat up to see who walked in. “Ay tae wanna go get a drink , or should we jus drink here” a tall,loud, brownish red head appeared from the doorway, walking in after taking off his shoes. He looks around till his eyes lands on you. “Where’s taehyun??” He said walking over to the couch, taking a seat next to you. “Oh uh..I don’t know” u said after realizing u haven’t seen him all day, he nods n takes the remote, “I’m beomgyu by the way. I don’t know if he mentioned me but im his best friend” he smiled as he looked for a show to watch, this man has no manners.. “yeah I know you” u said remembering him from a old conversation you and taehyun had.

“Where are u going?” You asked your boyfriend who came out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist , showing a bit of his v-line. You slightly blush at his appearance , “im going out with beomgyu, why?” He says as he uses the other towel in his hand to dry his hair. “Just him?” U say while getting up, walking over to your boyfriend to help him dry his hair, he smiles and hands the towel to you. “Yeah everyone else is busy” he says relaxing into ur touch as u dry his locks, “I’m not busy” u smile at him while u throw the towel somewhere random n grab his hand to lead him to the closet to find a outfit for him. “Is that so?” He says while putting on a pair of boxers, letting the towel fall to his feet. U sneak a look at him as he pulls on the pair. “yes, it is true” you pout at tae, “my poor baby” he laughs slightly and pulls you close to him, “come on pretty”he says and walks you both to the bed.

“You know me?!” He gasps dramatically, “yes taehyun has mentioned you” u say reminiscing in that memory, you loved every memory you had with him back then, “see I told you he was my best friend” he giggles and looks at you, you look back at him almost confusingly. “I didn’t know he hung out with people like you” u say under your breath. “What do you mean people like me?!” He fully turns his body at you, sitting crisscrossed apple sauce. “I don’t mean it like that, you guys have a different personality as you and I didn’t know he liked loud people” you explain yourself , he laughs n smiles at you. looking at you like how taehyun used to. You look away from him feeling awkward. “Opposites attract you know” he says leaning into you, “yeah..they do” you sigh n grab the bag of chips you were previously eating. He leans back up and slightly coughs. “Anyways.. when will tae be home?” He says taking out his phone from his back pocket. “I’m not sure” you reply as you watch whatever he put on.”oh yeah! I saw you at the wedding, obviously it was your wedding..anyways you looked super pretty in that dress. Lucky tae!” He says excitedly. You smile at him and thank him, “there’s nothing lucky about that” the man who beomgyu was originally looking for suddenly spoke up, taking his shoes off and placing his coat on the rack. “Oh tae!” Beomgyu jumps up n walks over to his friend. Tae looked at him then you, looking obviously annoyed. “Why were you here when I wasn’t” he asks gyu while looking at you. “Cos I wanted to grab a drink with you. Obviously” he says as he grabs his friend to walk back out the door. Tae obliges and walks with his friend still looking at you. “Bye.” You say to them as you get up and walk to your room. “Bye y/n!” Beomgyu tells as he walks out the door.

“Y/n is pretty, you really did win the lottery” beomgyu says after taking a long sip of his beer, “she is. But she’s truly evil.” He sighs and grabs his can of beer. “How so” beomgyu asks, “she broke up with me like he never loved me! Then she asks her dad to set her up with a man who wants to get married! And when she found out it was me who he set her up with she acted as if she didn’t want to get married during our relationship. I don’t know gyu. I feel like I’m being too mean to her but then i remember what she did to me, I miss her like crazy. I mean I’m glad she’s back in my life but I didn’t want it to happen like this!” He goes on a rampage, “gyu I can’t take it anymore, should I go home right now and make it up to her?” He says as beomgyu just laughs at him. “You know you won’t, do something about it when your sober” , he sighs and nods taking another sip of his drink.

“taehyun I won’t be home later, can you please call someone for the toilet. It’s broken” you say as u put ur shoes on while he cooks something for himself. “You do it when u get home.” He says with a small attitude, you scoff at his attitude. “It’s your fucking house you do it. I dont have time to do that today.” You say walking over to the kitchen, slamming your bag on the table, taehyun slightly jumps from the sudden noise. He turns around to look at you, visibly annoyed. “Do you think your the only one busy here?” He laughs slightly looking out the window, “are you about to go to work right now taehyun?” You say walking up to him.”go to work then! All you do is talk about your job, even more now than a year ago” he says staring down at you from the height difference. You look at him disgusted, “like you were even better! You were always at work, we didn’t even go one dates besides the one we met on.” He scoffs and leans onto the stove only to burn his hands, “holy shit” he winced jumping away from the stove that was still turned on, you grab his wrists to move him to the sink to put cold water on it, he looks at you with soft eyes, “are you okay?” You say looking back up at him. “yeah..” he whispers still looking at you, “m sorry, shouldn’t have started a argument” u apologize and look back at his hands, “it’s okay y/n” he smiles at you even though you aren’t looking at him.

“She’s making me go insane yeonjun.” Tae sighs as he lays on the bed with his friend , “how” yeonjun replies as he scrolls mindlessly on insta, “it’s embarrassing.” Taehyun says and puts a pillow over his face. “What is she making you sexually frustrated?” His friend says jokingly, after a few seconds of silence after he said that he looks at his friend, putting his phone down. “Damn she ain’t even letting u hit?” Yeonjun says and laughs. “We aren’t even on good enough terms TO fuck yeonjun. When I burned my hands we were fighting right, and like she looked so hot during that moment and when I burned my hands she held my wrists” tae rambles to his best friend. “So ur horny cos she held ur wrists?” He snickers at the thought of it. “No yeonjun. That’s just the only contact we had in a year. JUN I HAVENT EVEN HAD SEX WITH ANYONE SINCE SHE LEFT ME” he starts to yell as he flips over and screams in the pillow he was laying his head on. “This is the saddest love story I’ve heard”

“Y/n!” You hear beomgyu yell out for u as u lay in ur bed, you had just woken up and your already being called for. You hear your door open and comes in beomgyu. He lays on ur bed next to u and cuddles up next to you, “hi y/n” he mumbles , “hi beomgyu” you reply in a tired tone. “Y/n want to hang out today?” He asks as you reach for ur phone, “she’s busy with me today gyu, leave” Tae suddenly appears in the doorway. “U guys are no fun” beomgyu mumbles as he gets up and leaves, sticking his tounge out to his friend as he passes by him. Tae closes the door and sits next to you, “what do u need?” You ask him as you stretch. “I’m sorry y/n.” You look at him confused, “for what?” U ask him, turning ur body towards him. “For everything, for arguing last week, for pressuring you trying to get you to marry me, idk I’m sorry for a lot of things” he says looking at you with sincere eyes. You smile at him and pull him into a hug, he gladly hugs you back. “I’m sorry too taehyun, I shouldn’t have done what I did to you back then, and im sorry for everything else” you say as he tightens his grip. After a few minutes of hugging you both let go, he rests his hands on your waist. “You know y/n.. I haven’t been with anyone since we broke up” he says with a small smile, “is that so?” You say as you smile back. “Mhm, so that means I haven’t slept with anyone either” he smirks slightly. You realize what he’s trying to get at and you smile at him, “not right now tae, I have to go to work” you try to get up but he grabs ur wrist, “but y/n.. I haven’t felt you in so long, haven’t felt all of you.” And with that he pulls u back down to the bed , he goes to hover over u, “tae..” you whisper gently as he presses small kisses on your neck. “I didn’t want to fuck any other girl cos they weren’t you. No one could make me feel good besides you.” He says, placing soft hickeys. “But it seems like you enjoy messing around with other men, especially my friend.” He says as he takes your shirt off, you shutter at the sudden change of temperature, feeling colder than before . “Letting him cuddle you like I used to, is it fun to mess with me y/n? Did you guys sleep together?” He says while kissing your chest. “No..” you reply back and he smiles at you. “Good. Cant have my baby getting fucked by anyone other than me.”

Following on from my ramblings about Sally Park. Oops! Edited to add in Zoe too.

Well written female characters in Lookism? Uhh...

When the bar is at an all time low, it's really not hard to step over it.

At this point, I've been pavloved to think that any female character that expresses a personality trait other than 'simp' is pretty good. Simp is fun when it's part of a list of characteristics (Zack, Ryuhei). Not so much when it's the only thing.

Long live PTJ, the greatest feminist. Anyway.

Female characters I like

Mary Kim

Love her. Empress of 2 seconds. Queen of my heart.

Surprisingly kept a platonic relationship with Vin Jin, showing quite a healthy mixed gender friendship. Sassy and smart. Loyal. Good taste in men (Jace). Is shown having a life and interests outside of a man.

On my hands and knees praying that PTJ doesn't ruin her. Kinda glad she hasn't appeared in a while so she is kept away from his incessant need to turn everyone into a love interest.

Lua Im

Once we got over the odd Johan panels, which I heard the Korean audience didn't like and I'm quite happy about, she's fine. And it's not that I care that much about Johan staying a single dog-dad, I just needed a coherent reasoning/build up why they would be interested in one another.

Lua has potential.

Sourcing intel, even impressing the likes of Gun? A little Muay Thai knowledge? Jake and Jerry scared of her? Lol. Ok. Good. Let's build on this.

Crystal Choi (meh)

And Ms. Choi, because anon specifically asked. I really don't mind her? I know she's meant to be anti-Lookism but still judges people based on their looks eh. That's fine. Pretty realistic actually. Whatever.

She can be a bit bitchy for no reason. So can I. Handwaving all that.

What I do take issue with though, is her so called title of Business Genius. Please show me the chapter where she actually does something to earn that title besides the one where other people ooh-ed and aah-ed over her in the meeting with DG.

Wow she's sooooo gorgeous. Ok good for her. If that's the route they're taking her character then at least OWN. THAT. SHIT. Use her beauty and looks to sign deals and get what she wants. GOOD. DO IT.

Zoe Park (also meh... Wait)

Sorry anon, I think 'really well written' is a bit of a reach... She does have some decent character development, starting as quite a flighty, shallow girl and then showing that she has a heart of gold, liking both Daniels and. Huh.

Wait. You're right. She is pretty well written. She's selfless and kind and loyal to her friends, putting up with Logan's bullshit. There's enough of a character arc for her from the Zoe we're introduced to at first.

And I do like that she's good at maths too.

Don’t get the wrong idea I’m not trying to fix anything (despite my issues with 75% of the bestie crew having the same hairstyle) ZHENA-nim art did really well on this series and I can definitely see her improvements!!

I find redesigning characters I like as a good exercise for me since I’m trying to practice my character design skills! I’ve also added headcannons so strap in.

First victim, istg he doesn’t even look like the same person lol.

- gave him the :3 mouth bc he has the little shit potential especially after wrapping everyone around his finger

- Longer hair comes from the hc that he is the kind of person who would hide behind it and to match his dads

- changed his hair to brown bc the blond colour blended with his skin too much (helps with contrast)

- The bag is to help him carry cats and more cat food

- Oversized clothes to wallow in, also to hide himself or something

- While Jiwoo and Kayden are implied to wear the same size clothing I still think Jiwoo’s clothes would be tight on Kayden

- It helps Kayden learn about Jiwoo as a person since he would question why his clothes were so ill fitting on him

- Colour palette was hard af, but I mostly went with warmer colours and added blue as an accent so he could match Kayden

- As u can tell the only thing that fits him perfectly is the school uniform, even then he likes to size up the blazer

- His bag would start with no buttons and over time more would be added based on where he’s been and the friends he makes

- Glasses are up for debate but they look nice on him

- gave him more down turned eyes so he could resemble Kang Daniel a little more

barely changed, basically the outfit was the only thing to go

- He looks like the kind of kid that would wear headphones all day

- His glasses fucked off to somewhere and I brought brought them back THEY R HERE TO STAY

#BACKGROUND

Hanan was born in San Francisco, California. Only daughter of a successful business woman and his father being CEO of his own company, Hanan would have to move and live in different countries since early age until her parents decided on settling down in New York; there, she would start taking ballet lessons.

Hanan would always excel in every school assignment, and her former classmates would refer to her as “the triple treat: beautiful, smart and kind.” It’s after a ballet winter showcase that she gets scouted by YG, an agent reaching out to her parents telling them she had potential. Her dad was reluctant to let her go and be a trainee, while her mother told her that she supported whichever decision she made.

She became a trainee at the beginnings of 2013 under YG. Hana trained for three years under YG, even getting contemplated to debut as a Blackpink member, but ultimately Hanan didn’t make the cut.

hi dr fudge! Hope you're doing well! Sorry for the weird ask but do you have any favorite media that explore woc in unhealthy/twisted romantic relationships? I'm very fascinated with this but i rarely find a narrative that centres on women of color. Octavia Butler's books have been very helpful though because not only are they literary gems but the protagonists are always black women, so it's always fun to analyze the relationships from bipoc lens

i really need to get to octavia butler already

there's a real and frustrating scarcity of twisted/dark romance that features women of color. 90% of published romance with woc are wholesome quirky romcoms with cartoon covers. i'm tired.

i tend to find interesting and twisted content with woc protagonists in literary fiction more than traditional romance; so for instance luster by raven leilani could fit into this category. also, catherine house by elisabeth thomas which features a woc protagonist who is in many ways involved in an unhealthy romance not just with a boy but with a house and an institution and she's allowed to be super messy about it. i haven't yet read you made a fool of death with your beauty by akwaeke emezi, but i really want to, because apparently the woc protagonist gets involved with her boyfriend's dad? sign me up.

there's also stuff like the vegetarian by han kang which kind of irked me but which allows the protag to be really fucked up in her relationships. or you have writers like carmen maria machado and silvia moreno-garcia, both literary fiction darlings whose romantic plots i enjoy a lot more than those found in traditional romance.

a real treasure trove is short story anthologies from women of color. i've noticed that the short story is the real medium for delicious fucked-up dynamics, but check out danielle evans, zz packer, bora chung

i do want to mention a classic that again, isn't really romance, but will fuck you up nonetheless and that is corregidora by gayl jones. because wow, what a novel, and what a voice. so many fascinating and unhealthy romantic, queer, and familial dynamics in that one. in general, books from the 70s and 80s tend to be much bolder. i was really disappointed by the recent the other black girl which was trying to go for that 70s/80s avantgarde and just...fell so flat.

there's a lot of stuff out there to explore, but a lot of it may not be mainstream or as easily available as the media that focuses on white women. when you look, for instance, over lists of dark romance books....90% of them are about white women getting to experiment and be fucked up and messy. woc have to be respectable and "cute" on those clinical and sexless cartoon covers. ANYWAY. that's why many times i turn to our patron saint, fanfiction, which almost never lets me down.

addendum: i forgot about ONE OF MY FAVES: the idiot by elif batuman. goddd, the woc protagonist OWNS MY HEART FOREVER and she has such a terrible, fascinating time with a mysterious Russian guy in college.

but there was no time to start because a technological ship in the shape of a sword appears above Mahanttan and a voice from the ship announces that Kang is the conqueror who will bring a new era to this universe and that this world will not fare better like all civilizations which he conquered and then the ship started firing technological extensions throughout the neighborhood and the city and so everything goes white and the Murdcok family doesn't even have time to react because everything goes white and then Matt and Foggy wake up near a castle that was on a rocky mountain in the shape of a monster with horns and reminiscent of a dragon but before they could walk a temporal portal opens and throws them a few minutes later into the future where the possible monster caught a blonde with a crown and not only that Jess was caught too and was angry at being made the damsel in distress, so Foggy and Matt go after her.

Jordan Peele’s latest film Nope is smart, funny, scary, beautiful, enjoyable and loaded with great ideas. So why doesn’t it exactly work?

Probably because it is overloaded with ideas. Peele is shooting for the skies here (literally), tossing in lots of symbols and tangents and subplots and gags to the point where it is bursting at the seams. Also to the point that the story doesn’t quite make sense.

For example, there is an extended sequence here with a murderous chimpanzee which is horrific and arresting. However, it only has a glancing connection to the storyline at large. I suppose it could be seen as foreshadowing the action to come, but that seems a bit tenuous.

Is it enough for it to just be arresting cinema? Maybe. But I walked out of Nope having enjoyed the ride but having multiple serious questions about what I had just seen.

I get that Peele doesn’t have to make everything cookie cutter. In fact, one of the teaser trailers for the film highlighted the fact that you can never know what you’ll get from Peele.

Since moving on from his comic role with Key & Peele, Peele has made smart updates on traditional horrors. Get Out was a smart and scary look at subtle racism in modern America, but it borrowed its basic plot structure from The Stepford Wives, and then ramped up the violence. Us was his reboot of the Strangers type of film about malevolent bad actors in the night surrounding a family home.

Nope is Jordan Peele’s extraterrestrial film, a surreal and much scarier take on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It’s terrific and kind of a mess, all at the same time.

Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) plays OJ, a horse trainer who has taken charge of his family business – training horses and providing them for films – after his father was killed in a mysterious accident on their land. The business, which had always been profitable, has hit on hard times and OJ is not a natural salesman like his dad. Therefore he gets his flamboyant sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) to be something of a frontperson for the business. Em is happy to help, but she’s also got her own irons in the fire, career wise.

OJ has been reduced to selling some of their horses to Jupe (Steven Yeun), a former child sitcom star who now runs a western theme park. (The chimp scene mentioned earlier was a flashback to a traumatic occurrence that happened when he was a child.)

Into this heated situation, OJ sees an unidentified flying object on their desert compound. He and Em determine if they can get a photo of the UFO, they could make enough money to save the ranch. The strange thing appears to be hiding in a still cloud formation above a nearby mountain. (It never quite makes sense why they think getting a picture will solve all their problems, they still have a perhaps deadly alien hanging nearby.) They hire a local electronics worker (Brandon Perea) to set their ranch up with cameras, and he ends up joining their little group of alien hunters.

This leads to some spectacular scenes in which we learn more about the danger which is lurking in the clouds. Nope has fun with typical horror tropes, like several times when OJ looks out and sees danger and he hunkers down in safety with a dismissive “Nope.” The cheesy faux-Western feel and the wicked satire is also intriguing.

You enjoy Nope through most of its runtime – it’s very engaging – and yet the whole time all these niggling little questions are piling up. Why did they do that? Why did that happen? How does any of this make sense?

Sadly, for the most part, it really doesn’t. But the movie’s highs go so high that it almost negates its flaws. In the long run, Nope ain’t no “yep,” but it’s a fairly strong “maybe.”

Dad! Kang Daniel A-Z

So I see a lot of those NSFW A-Z’s of idols and decided to try something different and do Dad! Daniel A-Z. I hope you like this, it was a bit of fun for the afternoon! These are just my thoughts, not what I expect Daniel to do in the future lol!

I’m open to writing actual Dad! Daniel fictions in the future too, if you’d like something more than scenario based!

AFFECTION

Daniel is very affectionate with his children. He loves cuddling with them, and was sad when the older girls started to grow out of enjoying his hugs constantly. He loved the feeling of being their security blanket, and relishes it whenever they let him now.

BIRTH

He was there throughout every birth. He couldn’t imagine letting you go through it all alone. Anything you needed, he got you. The type to come with a bag of snacks that he knows you like, but eats them himself because he’s grown nervous. After the first child he had a little more understanding of what was going to happen, but since each delivery was different, he would still find himself questioning how to be your biggest support. Wanted to cut the umbilical cord of your first child but felt too hesitant. Definitely did it for the others.

CONSISTENCY

Daniel is mostly consistent and follows through with your mutual parenting regime. If he’s really tired he’s most likely to give in then, and so you try your best to make sure he isn’t left alone when in that state - after your daughter convinced him to buy her the expensive doll house you had told her she couldn’t get, you weren’t prepared to take any further chances.

DAD SKILLS

Understanding how to communicate well with each of your children depending on their age and stage. Changes his language to suit their needs and all your children have always felt at ease because communication for needs and wants flows easily.

EDUCATION

Hands on approach more so than with books. Likes to set up fun experiments in the weekends to teach and play with. Very interested in sports and helps his children with them. Likes being involved in the school as much as he can and fosters a program for performance. Your children that are in school are all pretty well known because of their Dad and are very proud to point out their Dad whenever they see him at school too.

FUN

Has almost as much fun playing with some of the toys and activities as your kids do. Is known as the fun Dad within the neighbourhood and at school. The type to not batter an eye through an intense pretend tea party with the girls, and gets really into eating all that yummy pretend cake that it makes you laugh.

GETTING THROUGH PREGNANCY

Daniel was always supportive. The type to get up and buy you the thing you’re craving at 3am even if he’s just rolled into bed an hour ago. Was always worried when you suffered from morning sickness, even after the first born. Went to every scan and read pregnancy books with you in preparation. Knew when to comply and challenge your hormonal behaviours well.

HOW MANY

Four. You wanted two, he wanted three, somehow you ended up with an extra. Three girls and a boy. Whilst Daniel was thankful for his son to not outnumber him alone, he loves raising little girls and is pretty chuffed to be known as the Daughter-Daddy within your group of friends. Does a lot of rough and tough with his son, after years of tea-parties, he’s all too happy to have a son to experience new adventures with.

INTIMACY

Despite having children, your intimacy is still pretty decent. The kids groan cheekily whenever they see you both kiss, but hugging is constantly something Daniel does with you regardless. The kids all love it, snuggling up for movie night is a family favourite.

Your sex life isn’t as active as it once was, about 1-2 times a week. Which when you think about it, with four kids, it’s pretty great to be that active still!

JOB

Daniel’s idol life continued through the first baby, but after that he opted to run his own company, helping train idols with the knowledge that he gained through a very successful career. He still managed to do spot performances with WANNA ONE for anniversaries, and with his fellow MMO members, but he knew with four kids, and his age, he needed to find something more stable and city-based. His schedule was still packed, but he ensured he made time in it for activities with his family too.

KID FREE TIMES

You both made a point to have date night every fortnight where you went out for the night. Admittedly you both messed up in the beginning, still talking about the kids, but after setting the rule not to discuss anything parenting wise, your date nights became something you both looked forward to a lot.

Whenever the kids were in bed and you both were home you’d just cuddle up and catch up with each other and waking up in the morning without a kid(s) in between you was rare, but very well received (and an easy way to get in one of those more intimate sessions – normally quickly with the thrill of getting it out of the way before being disturbed to start the daily grind, hah!)

You were both looking forward to the times where your kids could go on camp, but it was a wee way off to have all four out at the same time.

LIMITS

Since he works with large groups of young people every day, loudness is never a problem for Daniel. Nor is bustling activity, because he could just lay there and supervise if he was feeling a little tired. However what he couldn’t handle was the children fighting. He literally struggled with seeing them argue or physically hit each other, it really got under his skin. He would come down on them all pretty hard then, almost regretting it as soon as his harsh words left his mouth. He would often feel pretty low after it too, turning to you for support and building himself back up as a parent.

He also found the department store with four kids all wanting this that and another thing as well; all too overwhelming and either buy them everything or nothing at all to deal with the environmental chaos.

MUM ONLY

Daniel was pretty hands on with most things, but the one thing he couldn’t deal with is sickness. If one of the kids was sick, he panicked so much that your calm and collected approach was the one chosen in the end. He’d always flitter outside the door worriedly asking you how they are every few moments, and when your second daughter broke her arm falling off her bike he was an absolute wreck. He really is emotional for his kids. Funny thing, he could take very good care of you if you’re sick. Which with four kids, when it made its rounds, you were very grateful you had him for nursing you back to health.

NUTRITION

Loves making meals for his family with you. As a unit you’re both big on meal prep. Looked up good healthy kids snacks and most of the time insists on them. But also the type to blow their entire diet and throw them on a sugar high at least once a month as a treat. Uses ice-cream as a bribery tactic often. When your eldest daughter had her first dental check and had early tooth decay signs in one of her baby teeth (lol), Daniel insisted on a month long stringent of eating well, until the tooth fell out and he realised that brushing twice a day and eating well in moderation was better than preventing pretend cake at the tea parties. The girls had been very anti-Daddy during that stage.

OUTER VILLAGE

Very close with Seongwoo’s, Jisung’s and Minhyun’s families especially and every summer would organise a vacation together. Would turn to Minhyun for a lot of parenting advice, even when you were the first out of the group to give birth. Good thing Minhyun’s full of sound knowledge!

PETS

You still have three cats and although he wanted more, it was hard for Daniel to share his cats with his kids. They would pull their tails and Daniel would just about dive on them to protect them. Spent a lot of time teaching the children the importance of respecting animals. Takes them to petting zoos often whenever he feels like there’s just not enough paws at home. Tried to convince you along with your third daughter that another cat would match the number of kids, but you didn’t buy into it so three it remains.

QUALITY TIME

Despite his schedule, Daniel insists on quality one on one time with his children. He takes each girl on a Daddy date which they all love, and often goes out with your son to play. Tries to read to each child before bed in the weekends, though your eldest now reads to him and puts him to sleep instead, oops.

REPRIMANDING

Daniel isn’t the type to like telling your children off. He’d rather negotiate and find a happy medium than scold and take things from them. He’s a sucker for their tears too, but overall if he has to; he will give them consequences and will stick to them too. Usually the harshest when he finds them physically pushing one another around, and he really has no time for disrespect in his household.

SPOILED?

Yep. The “perks” of raising three princesses means they all have princess rooms and all the things they generally wanted, except the knight in shining armour (Daniel is not prepared for this stage and often worries about it even though your eldest is only seven lol). His son has the latest games, a bunch of bikes and skateboards and the backyard is full of play equipment to entertain them for hours. The type to think of his children (and you) and buy little gifts whenever he travels. Hates when you purge the toy room as much as the kids do. He tries to be modest but the fact is, the kids have him whipped, sigh.

TECHNOLOGY

Prefers your kids to have fresh air and exercise over being in front of devices. You mirror these thoughts and were very conscious about how much time they got in front of technology. Is freaking out about when puberty hits, since your eldest is already asking for her first phone.

UNCLE

Known also as the fun uncle. Invites all the kids over in the weekend and lets them play on all the fun things at your house. Believes in child play being the best time of your lives and really instils this in all children he crosses paths with. Sungwoon is always whining to you that his son loves Daniel more than him. Comes up with crazy over the top children days with Jaehwan and you’ve given up trying to calm them down.

VALUES

Believes a family that talks about how much they love each other is the type to have a good constant flow of communication. And so he always makes sure everyone is talking well to each other, and it’s why he gets so upset when the children pick on each other.

WHAT CHANGED MOST

You wonder where your homebody of a husband went, but having kids truly made him want to make life as magical as he could for them. Even though he loved staying home, he’d always be pottering around the house doing something with them. It was somewhat a plus, because it meant you could do your own things when he was home, and allowed you some much needed me-time, but the change could still throw you off some days.

X-FACTOR (TALENTS)

Was very into seeing what talents your children would have early on and supporting it immediately. Your kids had gone through various hobbies like they had their underwear at times, but eventually you found that your eldest loved dance, your second child was in gymnastics, third loved horse riding, and your son was playing soccer and hockey. Daniel was very attentive to any need they had for pursuing their interests and was a very proud Dad with all their achievements.

YEARNING

Daniel’s life dream from here is almost complete. He’d love to move to the country one day, to let your children run free, but he likes the city life too, knowing how accessible it is for good education and amenities. Admittedly he’s happy with his four kids, but now and then, especially since Daehwi’s got his first kid on the way, Daniel can’t help but envision you pregnant again, he loved rubbing at your baby bump whenever you were pregnant.

ZZZs (SLEEP)

The kids’ bedtime starts at 7pm and the older two have until 8pm which is generally the busiest time of the night, considering it’s you putting all of them to bed alone because Daniel’s still at work. You have a routine in place which thankfully works, and you’re able to get a few hours peace to yourself until bed around midnight. Daniel is generally home around 10pm. In the weekends you both aim to sleep in, but due to poor sleep schedules from being an idol, Daniel still rises to his current schedule. Which is great because weekend cartoons with the kids is one of his favourite morning pastimes.
