(Ok, I’m gonna basically repeat something I’ve already said in my mutual’s replies because the urge to yap about this has been keeping me up at night). Anyways, to me the drama of Dick and Jason’s pre-DITF relationship comes not from not from conflict between them (I don’t think Dick was mean to Jason for more than a day), but rather from the fact that the relationship never reached its full potential. I kinda see their relationship as somewhat paradoxical, while they do have a special connection on account of being in each other’s 1st brother, they’re not as close as they could’ve been, certainly not as close as Dick and Tim.

I just don’t think there’s any way they could’ve been super close. Dick is a young adult in a far away city dealing with his own life, realistically it’s not really his fault if he doesn’t have the time to hang with kid adopted brother every weekend. It’s not that I think that they never hung out, (there’s been retroactive additions to interactions between Dick and Robin Jason, which have been pretty cute for the most part), I just can’t see them being super best brothers. Maybe they could’ve gotten there if they had more time, maybe they were in the process of getting there, but Jason dies before they get the chance, the tragedy of their relationship comes from what could’ve been.

Another thing that leads me to this interpretation is the way Dick talks to Bruce about Jason’s death in Titans #55

Despite his intense reaction to the news earlier, when he talks to Bruce it sorta feels like he’s talking to Bruce about a relative that Bruce lost, but there’s a degree of separation between himself and Jason. Now this could totally just be me and no else see’s it that way, but that’s the vibe I got

But the main reason that I don’t think that Dick and Jason could have been particularly close follows the reasoning of “if Jason felt like he had someone like Dick Grayson looking out for him, he would’ve acted differently”. If there’s anything I think is a worthwhile take away from the infamous “Jason attacking Tim in Titans tower” issue is the part where Jason says something along the lines of “maybe if I had had the sort of friends Tim has, things would’ve gone differently for me”. Like YEAH Jason’s behavior pre-death does not align with the behavior of someone who has a robust social network/feels supported. He rushes to look for his mother after feeling rejected by Bruce because he’s desperate for family, and that sort of desperation doesn’t come out of nowhere. If Jason had felt like he had other lifelines I think he would’ve acted differently. So no I don’t think he could’ve had a super close knit relationship with Dick

To me the ultimate theme of Dick and Jason’s relationship pre death is “ mourning what could’ve been” which makes a great backdrop for all of the post resurrection drama. Like I genuinely lowkey think of brothers in blood as Jason’s honest attempt at brotherly bonding, he was leaving dead prey on Dick’s doorstep like a cat with a high prey drive. Murder just isn’t a love language for Dick the way it is for Jason 😔

i lied in the post title, btw. i actually have only one main thought about this run.

i have a proposition to make, batman fandom: dick is actually more wary of Jason then bruce is.

i think—dick heavily dislikes jason for always being able to uncover the old wound. i think as someone who's been there since the start, has seen bruce through his best and his worst, cannot stand this grinning spectre upending all the progress bruce has made with his grief. and! i think a part of dick has always felt unsettled that even he couldn't completely heal that grief. and the one person who could do it (he thinks), the one person who is against all odds alive to do it—what does jason do? he needles the wound open. he won't let it rest. he beats up dick's little brother. he sows chaos all over gotham and dick's new city. he saw bruce drown in the self-destructive depression for years and the one person who might have helped ease it in a way no one else could is too busy cutting a bloody swath through various cities.

i think, also, that this—detachment, if you will, is aided by the fact that dick and jason did not know each other as well as they might have. jason was taken in after bruce fired dick, so nightwing was still taking off solo. they have been able to connect and dick and jason have very cute interactions pre-ditf but it's a drop in the ocean compared to dick and tim's relationship.

there is also, i think, a disconnect between robinjay and red hood jason—his little brother died with robinjay, and whoever the red hood is is almost a stranger

He's someone from a long, long time ago. Black sheep of the family, as it were. His name is Jason Todd. He thinks he's me. This may sound crazy, but... he's supposed to be dead. Twice over.

"from a long, long time ago." and like i said, there's this almost detachment from dick, no (positive) reminiscence of jay's robin days. i do think that dick, wrt jason, is mostly unrestrained by past sentiment—or at least he's better at separating that sentiment than bruce, who although tries to remain objective in his chase against red hood, is also notably shaken, to the point that jason was able to force his hand & drive him to panic, leading to half-thought, panicked decisions that a level-headed batman would not have made (as i think we are all in agreement that bruce would not actively decide to disarm his son via batarang to the throat, especially considering his no-kill rule.)

there's more i'd like to say, but this is most of it—i don't want to drown the dash with batman rambling, but im asking yall to consider it. think about how delicious this dynamic is!! there's so so much to explore!!! and i think it really hammers home just how much the world has changed during jason's death & disappearance 🫣

Jason has such a doctor name, too. Jason Peter Todd. And to further that like it would come all around since you also have the the issue with what happens when those in poverty don’t have access to doctors or medicine and etc. like I feel this is something dc characters (especially those in the so-called batfamily have less of) they don’t have jobs were they interact with the people they should be helping (and being a cop doesn’t count). Jason Todd solo where he is studying to be a doctor and it is a slice of life AND if people really want to see Jason Todd as Red Hood and have it be complicated then like they could find a way to do that especially with medical ethics involved. And I want to see Jason living in his apartment and maybe later as the arc progresses building a home on a piece of land that was left to him by Willis (i think in DITF when Jason is looking through his things he finds a deed to a piece of land). Like yes there is tragedy in Jason’s life but hope and moving forward isn’t a bad thing and doesn’t make him any less tragic. Jason can still an have interesting arc without all the pew pew. It’s amazing though that Dick is the one that is a solo character while Jason is the one on teams because I always thought that it should have been the other way around. And off track, but Jason would work really well with a character that is like Oracle. Like he would need a character like Oracle... speaking of Oracle and Barbara Gordon, one thing that I finally after years was able to pick apart is why Barbara loving heights doesn’t really fit her. Personally I love the Barbara Gordon issues when she was Batgirl where she was more cautious and realized that being a hero was very dangerous. Most of her missions as batgirl were also very low level and didn’t require leaping off building and etc. She was a ballerina like Cassandra but I feel like she would have taken ballet more as a social class thing whereas her interest in track felt more like something she would dedicate herself more to. Like the long distance am runs and the whole routine and track meets and etc. So it’s more fitting that she would turn to swimming as something she likes more when she later becomes Oracle and it is something they show (that she does swim (it’s a brief scene)) but writers don’t really dig into it. Like the control you have while swimming? The similarities it has to track. The whole Barbara would miss being high up trapeze thing never made sense to me because this was a character that never liked to be out of control and even less so when they are Oracle.

YES YES YES there is genuinely so much to do when you have jason reconnect with the community he once used to be a part of, when you have him understand what vigilantism’s harms are really in that they perpetuate a cycle of violence that is never ending and inescapable, which is what he knows well already and was motivated by, but may not necessarily have seen from the angle of a bystander so much as what he perceives to be a direct victim. there’s the crossfire and the manipulation and the harrowing existence of living in a part of gotham that almost feels like it is never allowed to breathe and that no one is more well acquainted with than people like leslie and himself (and selina, too!). it would be really meaningful for jason to make a home within that chaos again, to bring some peace to people where he now has the knowledge and power to do so, only knowledge and power under a re-analyzed light where construction supersedes destruction

and that is so cool about barbara! i never thought about it before but i like the idea of distinguishing each member of the batfam per their resident areas of expertise and comfort rather than ascribing a general acrobat prodigy label to each and every one of them. dick is the one who most loves the wind in his sails. he’s the one who swings from rooftop to rooftop engulfed in the simultaneous sting and thrill of a childhood trapeze all over again. it makes sense barbara is more immediate control oriented, and i think it speaks well to her background as a vigilante comparatively too. the robins were the ones doing all of the crazy training with the homemade gymnast’s playground. barbara didn’t have the same tools to work with at first and for a long time. this was a ground-up operation that at the outset required her to be steady on her feet and grounded her in the immediate realities of limited resources and fall back

Lost track of his plan in favor of finding the best kindergarten, reading up on what's normal for what age, spending like. Impressive programme

The agenda will feature many exciting projects such as the efficient personalised production of sports and outerwear from sustainable materials in one consistent digital workflow. For instance, the Digital Textile Micro Factory at drupa will produce various products with a focus on shirts and singlets for cycling.

2024 will see the design competition “drupa – textile design talents” being held for the first time. This was conceived of by the DITF and will be implemented by the partner Mitwill. This provides up-coming textile designers and newcomers with a unique opportunity to introduce their ideas and visions to a professional audience.

Broad industry support

A project as comprehensive as the Micro Factory requires many strong partners. The companies “on board” here include: Assyst/Germany (3D simulation for digital apparel twins), Mitwill Textiles Europe/France (creative design network), D.G.I. Digital Graphics Incorporation/South Korea, Multi-Plot Europe/Germany (large-format textile printing), LEONHARD KURZ Stiftung/Germany, Zünd/Switzerland (digital cutting), robot factory/Denmark, Asco/The Netherlands (presenting an innovative buffer solution between digital printing and cutting, automated sorting of cut parts from the cutter by robotfactory) as well as Brother/Japan (for small-format textile printing and bonding technology). Vaude and Berger textiles will be sponsoring the touchpoint. Another key partner is the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University that is supporting the project as a conceptual sponsor and which has set itself the clear mission to incorporate these new topics into its curriculum. This means the staff of the future will be geared up to the new challenges ahead.

Inspiring conference programme

Another partner of touchpoint textile is the European Specialist Printing Manufacturers Association (ESMA), which is responsible for the lecture programme. ESMA represents industrial, functional and specialist printing and acts as an organiser of educational events in the field of textile printing. At drupa speakers from research, development, and industry will address issues related to printing and finishing techniques, workflows, market developments and sustainability, to name but a few. The focus will also be on trends and applications that unlock ever new potential through the interplay of digital printing and textile printing substrates. The lectures are divided into the categories Research, Finishing, Print Systems & Hardware, Substrates, Inks & Chemistry and Software & Electronics. Assyst, for example, will deliver talks on the virtual development of apparel as well as the research project ECOShoring, which is funded by the “Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt” – DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation) and focuses on personalised and on-demand sustainable manufacturing. This will present new possibilities for digitization and direct customer involvement, for instance in the form of 3D apparel simulations complete with links to design networks for creative input. Digital workflows and virtual products are integrated directly in the manufacturing process.

As a special highlight for all trade visitors, the technology partners of this Micro Factory will demonstrate an automated on-demand production, textile printing, cutting and sorting – without any manual interaction. Such decentralized and digitally connected design and production chains will enable the textile industry to respond to customers’ requests and trends in a more targeted manner in future. This means, touchpoint textile 2024 technologically points the way to a future without shelf-warmers. In addition, the carbon footprint for the complete process from virtual development to finished product will be modeled and presented at the trade fair. 

Impressive program

The agenda will feature many exciting projects such as the efficient personalized production of sports and outerwear from sustainable materials in one consistent digital workflow. For instance, the Digital Textile Micro Factory at drupa will produce various products with a focus on shirts and singlets for cycling.

2024 will see the design competition 'drupa – textile design talents' being held for the first time. This was conceived of by the DITF and will be implemented by the partner Mitwill. This provides up-coming textile designers and newcomers with a unique opportunity to introduce their ideas and visions to a professional audience.

Broad industry support

A project as comprehensive as the Micro Factory requires many strong partners. The companies on board here include: Assyst/Germany (3D simulation for digital apparel twins), Mitwill Textiles Europe/France (creative design network), DGI. Digital Graphics Incorporation/South Korea, Multi-Plot Europe/Germany (large-format textile printing), Leonhard Kurz Stiftung/Germany, Zünd/Switzerland (digital cutting), robotfactory/Denmark, Asco/The Netherlands (presenting an innovative buffer solution between digital printing and cutting, automated sorting of cut parts from the cutter by robotfactory) as well as Brother/Japan (for small-format textile printing and bonding technology).

Vaude and berger textiles will be sponsoring the touchpoint. Another key partner is the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University that is supporting the project as a conceptual sponsor and which has set itself the clear mission to incorporate these new topics into its curriculum. This means the staff of the future will be geared up to the new challenges ahead.

Inspiring conference program

Another partner of touchpoint textile is the European Specialist Printing Manufacturers Association (ESMA), which is responsible for the lecture program. ESMA represents industrial, functional and specialist printing and acts as an organizer of educational events in the field of textile printing. At drupa speakers from research, development, and industry will address issues related to printing and finishing techniques, workflows, market developments and sustainability, to name but a few. The focus will also be on trends and applications that unlock ever new potential through the interplay of digital printing and textile printing substrates.

The lectures are divided into the categories – Research, Finishing, Print Systems & Hardware, Substrates, Inks & Chemistry and Software & Electronics. Assyst, for example, will deliver talks on the virtual development of apparel as well as the research project ECOShoring, which is funded by the 'Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt' – DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation) and focuses on personalised and on-demand sustainable manufacturing.

Other speakers represent Adobe, Balta Group, Barbieri Electronic, Brother, Centexbel, CST, DITF, Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems, HS Albsig, Kornit Digital, Meteor Inkjet, Mimaki, Mitwill, Multiplot, Print-Rite, RWTH Aachen, Seiko Instruments, Tiger Coatings, Xaar, Zünd and the list is updated on regular basis.

Digital textile printing will also form a key component of exhibitor ranges beyond the special forum touchpoint textile. This will enable trade visitors to gain a 360-degree view of current developments and trends in textile printing.
