I saw a TikTok where somebody rewrote Over The Rainbow to be a “heartbreak song” and it got me thinking...
Over The Rainbow as-is works perfectly as a song of heartbreak regarding Dorothy’s relationship with Ozma.
I mean, the song is all about longing for a place of comfort and safety for when trouble gets to be too much to bear. In the context of the movie this is reflective of Dorothy’s desire to escape her dreary life in Kansas and go somewhere new and colorful.
But in the context of her love for Ozma, this world over the rainbow- the land of Oz- is the only place where the two of them can be together. A place where she can escape the bigotry of her early 20th century homeland and be who she is. A place that she’s always being pulled away from because she has responsibilities on the farm and to her family that she can’t just walk away from. All she can do is be patient and wait for the day where nothing holds her back anymore and she can be with the girl she loves forever.
In conclusion- lesbians. 🧡💛🤍💖💜
