Where you fit in with Climate Action and where it works for you 🌏 Like everything in life we put too much pressure on ourselves, see what other people are doing online and compare our lives to it, and that also includes Climate Action. Whenever I see Extinction Rebellion protests I feel bad for not always being there. But I have to remind myself that’s their form of climate action and I’ve got mine. And I’m sure you have your own forms of action too. But if you don’t, and are struggling to know where to get started as the Climate Crisis is huge and it impacts everything, this diagram might help. And here is my interpretation of the diagram- 1. What is the task at hand? - Fixing the climate… but what resonates with you most? Is it air pollution, waste, over fishing, meat farming, the removal of peat… or is it everything? And are you more concerned with how this all impacts you, the wildlife or your children/future children… These will all help guide you with where you want to focus your energy. 2. What brings you joy? - Are you the type of person that would love a protest? Or do you love teaching others, children or adults? Being outdoors or analysing data, learning, filming, or working with people… Or working alone. 3. What are you good at? - Are you creative? Analytical? Good at writing or bringing people together… what ever you’re good at it will link with what brings you joy, and then you can link this to the task at hand and what resonates with you most. Two things I’ve been thinking about recently live in this quote. . 1. Too many of us live the “lives of quiet desperation” Thoreau talked about. It seems like a horrible waste of life to me. We get one trip on this planet, and I feel like an awful lot of us waste it. I don’t think we mean to—I think we fall into the trap of believing the “conventional wisdom” that says you should put your hopes and dreams on hold in favor of Being Responsible,” and then we forget how to do anything else, and die with that song still in us. That, to me, has always seemed wasteful to the point of being criminal. . 2. I really, really need to sit down and read a bunch of James Baldwin. I’ll bet I’m far from the only one. (Now there’s someone who didn’t fall victim to the conventional wisdom...) . . . . .
