Dressed for revenge 6. Where do we go now?
Tumblr media
A/N: This is the start of the second arc. Hope you guys like following Ellie, Joel and Ghost on their journey.
CW: Descriptions of wounds, SA (not heavily described ; just the thoughts), trauma.

Second Arc: nowhere
When they wake up, they’re startled by the presence of another body in the same bed. They always slept alone.  The man is still half-asleep, face relaxed in the absence of his usual frown.
Ghost is so startled that they punch Joel’s jaw, which instantly wakes him up. The older man groans and sits up, hand on his hurt jaw. The person next to him puts their hands on their mouth, shocked at what they had just done.
“Fuck, sorry!”
“S’fine. Barely felt anything.” Joel lies as he gets up, still groggy from just waking up.
Still, they felt bad. They bite their lip in silence, and when they roll over to get on their feet, they’re reminded of the bruises on their back. They curse under their breath, but they still get up.
Joel goes up to them, awkward hands waving in their direction, ready to catch them if they fall.
“I’m fine, barely feel anything.” They repeat after Joel as they make a face.
“Okay… I’ll go check up on Ellie. ” The older man says, unconvinced. “Take your time, darlin’.”
When Joel leaves the room, they sit back on the edge of the mattress with a low curse. They slowly take off their top to check on the state of the back of it. Of course, it bled through.
In the other room, Ellie is already woken up – she has been for most of the night and is trying to find coffee in Joel’s bag – she knows he likes this nasty beverage in the morning. She looks up at Joel with a shit-eating grin seeing he’s coming out of the room where she can hear Ghost shuffling around.
“You slept with them?” Ellie asks with a perverted expression on her face.
Joel’s large hand lands on his face.
“She… they just had a nightmare. Watched over them.”
Ellie looks impressed when Joel corrects himself. She also finds what she’s looking for, and throws the bag of coffee at her protector, who catches it mid-air. He gets started on the coffee near the fire.
Ghost comes out of the room with a spare shirt they had brought, their bloodied one in their fist.
“I hope we can do some laundry soon…” They chuckle weakly.
“We’ll find some water and wash it up, don’t worry.” Ellie smiles. “How did you sleep with grumpy old man?”
“It was fine until they punched me in the face.” Joel says before they can add anything.
“Thankfully, he’s less grumpy in his sleep.” They add as they sit  carefully on the floor near the pair, after they had abandoned their soiled shirt on the windowsill. They cringe a little at the stretch of their back, but they try not to show their pain.
“Do you like a nasty thing called coffee?” Asks Ellie.
“Yes.”
Ellie makes them laugh. Their laugh sounded fake to their own ears… how long has it been since they had last laughed sincerely?
The trio snacks on some dried fruits and drinks coffee – well not Ellie - as they talk about the plan of the day.
“Thinking I can try to hunt and you gir-… you two might wanna try and find some water we can boil up. ” Ghost smiles lightly when he corrects his mistake. “Don’t want Ghost running around with their open wounds, clear.?”
“Yes sir.” Ghost says, and turns to Ellie to ask: “Is he always still bossy?”
“Yeah G, you better listen. That’s all.”
Ghost feels their heart fill with love when they hear the nickname. No one had used a nickname for them before. Hell, most even refused to address them by their chosen name. They look away as they swallow back their tears.
**
Ghost and Ellie are walking peacefully in the nearest forest. Ghost appreciates the silence, the singing of the birds, and the quiet sound of their feet in the snow.
“I’m sorry that Joel almost misgendered you.”
Ghost looks down at Ellie when she talks. They’re much taller than her.
“Oh no, it’s fine. He’s doing his best.” They brush it away.
“He’s very accepting and all, he’s just… old. I had a friend like you, back at school. So I understand. And also…”
“Also, you’re gay?” Ghost completes with a smile.
“Yes. Very.” Ellie sighs, relieved. “I’m glad you understand me. Have you been with a girl before?”
“Yeah, I have…”
 June 2015
There’s this new girl in the haven. They want to protect her as much as possible.
But by loving her, they put her in danger.
Every time they sneak out.
Every time they kiss behind the church.
Every time they lay in the green grass in a tangle of limbs.
November 2023
“The priest found us, once… I don’t know what happened to her.” They finish with a sad sigh. “I’d rather not know, even if it’s selfish.”
“How long have you been… in that cult thing?”
“Around 15 years. When we got there, my brother and I… We didn’t think they wouldn’t let us leave. I’m just… glad it’s over, now.”
It’s like they had found light after years of darkness.
Finally, the newly formed duo finds a deep enough body of water that wasn’t too covered by ice to get some water.
They meet back at the abandoned house. It also seemed like Joel was successful in his hunt. He was already working on taking off the skin of a freshly killed rabbit. Ghost had wished they had gone with him, but it was too risky with their opened wounds.
Ghost and Ellie sit near Joel as they watch him get to work.
“I’m thinkin’ we can spend another night here and then go up north, try and find Tommy.”
“Who’s Tommy?” Asks Ghost.
“My brother. Hopin’ he can help me get Ellie where she needs to be.” Joel responds without looking away from his work. Ghost admires silently the way his hands move confidently. They also hoped his brother was alive, unlike theirs.
Wyatt.
Wyatt.
Wyatt.
It’s all your fault.
**
The day went by slowly and peacefully, unlike any day at the Haven. Ghost would have to get used to this rhythm and get used not to live without the constant fear of the priest. After a shared meal, Joel states that he will take care of the watch for the night.
Maybe getting hit so early in the morning kept him from wanting to join Ghost.
Ellie installs her sleeping bag next to the mattress, where Ghost is laying on their side.
“How does your back feel?” She asks.
“Bad.” Ghost says with a weak laugh. “But it’s fine, really. I’ll be okay. G’night, Ellie.”
In the middle of the night, Ghost rolls on their back and they are immediately woken up by the sharp pain. It wasn’t as bad earlier, was it? They straighten up and let their eyes adjust to the darkness. Ellie is missing. She probably just went outside to pee.
They go to the main room where Joel is sitting in front of the fire. He jumps when he hears noise and turns around, relieved when he sees Ghost standing there.
“Everythin’ okay? Nightmares?” Joel asks.
“No it… It just really hurts. Like it’s burning. Worse than before. ”
“D’you want me to check… or d’you want to wait for Ellie to come back?”
“N-No just check please, I feel like I wanna peel my skin off…”
Joel pushes his firearm to the side, while Ghost turns around and try to take off their top slowly, without hurting themselves more.
“Think you’d just need to let it breathe…” Joel advises. He sees Ghost struggling, but he doesn’t want to touch them without their consent. “Can I help?”
“S…Sure.”
Joel delicately finishes the job, taking off their top.  Ghost is a bit jumpy, but they manage to push their bad thoughts away.
“Undo your bandage for me, please.” He could already see from the way the bandage was soiled that it wouldn’t look good.
As they undo the bandages, they’re transported to the past.
August 2009
Is this always gonna be like this? they ask themselves as they lay down on Thomas’ bed. His dirty hands get rid of their white dress, purity clashing with the sins they were committing.
But it was what Father Jeremiah asked.
They close their eyes. They don’t want to look at him. They want to be somewhere else.
It hurts. He doesn’t do anything to make it hurt less.
He doesn’t care when they flinch.
He doesn’t take care of them.
He just finishes his business, even though blood is forming on the white sheets.
November 2023
“Ghost… Ghost, are you okay?” Joel’s voice is distant.
“Yes. I am.” They lie. “How’s it looking back there…?”
“There’s puss and… it looks really inflamed. Probably an infection.”
At the same time, Ellie comes back inside, her eyes still small and sleepy. But she wakes up quickly when she sees the state of her friend’s back.
“Holy fuck. Joel… we have no medication left, right? I took everything like an asshole.”
Joel shakes his head.
“I’ll clean your wound, G… But I have nothing to sew you back together.”
Joel and Ellie can tell from the shaking in Ghost’s shoulders that they’re crying.
“I’ll… give you two some space. I’ll be outside.” Joel says as he awkwardly leaves to keep watch outside.
Ghost sits on the floor and lets Ellie use the water they filtered earlier to clean their wounds. It feels like they’re on fire, but they don’t complain. They want to open up about their flashback, but the words don’t come out.
“There… We’ll let it breathe for the night, go get some rest, G.”
They nod and go back to their room. But they don’t think they will get any sleep.
**
In the morning, they can barely move from the pain, and they feel like they’re burning and they’re cold at the same time. Ellie panics when she sees how sweaty Ghost’s forehead is, and how red their back is. She immediately goes to get Joel.
“We have no choice… We have to get to the West. I know some guys… they can help. Checked the map yesterday. It’s about a full day by horse, more if we stop.” He states simply.
Ghost tries to protest weakly. “But… Your brother… Just… Just leave me…”
Joel looks almost angry at their suggestion.
“We won’t let you fucking die after all you’ve been through. Let’s go.”
In the west, November 2023
An elderly couple is sitting in the living room, enjoying the warm light coming through the windows.
On the radio, a familiar song plays.
She's got a smile that it seems to me Reminds me of childhood memories Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky Now and then when I see her face She takes me away to that special place And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry
Whoa, oh, oh Sweet child o' mine Whoa, oh, oh, oh Sweet love of mine

Dressed for revenge 3.God made a mistake
Tumblr media
A/N: So here it is, the 3rd chapter of DFR, which is the story of our beloved non binary original character, Ghost, Joel and Ellie. I know the way the puzzle pieces together come slowly can be confusing, but it’ll all be clearer soon. Don’t hesitate if you have any questions, my inbox is always open!
CW: chirurgical procedures not done by doctors, light gore & body horror, intense transphobia, breast  & uterus removal, violence, character death.
Masterlist for this fic
September 2013
They wake up, startled. Head heavy, dizzy. Their limbs feel impossible to lift. Mostly because they’re strapped to a table.
“You’re awake just in time, sister.”
Ghost recognizes Father Jeremiah’s venomous voice. They turn their head to see that they’re laid down on an experimental operating table in the middle of the chapel. The leader is assisted by Stephanie, and more people that they can’t see. They’re all wearing medical wear and have sharp tools on hands. It feels like a bad nightmare. But it’s not.
The feel the cold autumn air on their body. They realize they’re completely stripped. They couldn’t scream.
“Nice tattoos you did on yourself.” He said, sarcastically. “Really a disgrace to the body that god gifted you.”
“Fuck you. It’s the only power over my body I have left.” Ghost’s voice was raspy, like they had drunk a bunch of alcohol. Maybe they had drugged them. They felt like they were in slow-motion, after all.
“I see. Let’s see if we can fix that.”
He disappears out of their view for seconds before he reappears with a syringe in a hand. Ghost wants to punch him, but they know they don’t have much power in their current position.
“God usually doesn’t make mistakes, my child… But I think he did one with you.” Father Jeremiah holds Ghost’s chin with his freehand. The helpless victim looks him in the eyes, with a defying stare. “God gave Eve the chance to bear children. Your uterus is useless. You’re not a woman. You’re not a man either. You’re nothing. So, I’ll take what god gave you by mistake. Finally, my child, you’ll be nothing.”
Ghost spits on his face. On cue, Jermiah takes their arm, and they feel a little pinch. Seconds later, they’re gone. The church is replaced by the soft green grass, and the songs of the birds for a few minutes, before everything goes back to nightmare-mode.
They feel like they know what’s going on. They feel him cutting them open like an experiment, his dirty hands playing in their body. They feel him taking away parts of them.
**
“Where the FUCK is my sibling?”
Wyatt is trashing and fighting two men who keeps him from going inside the church.
“It’s fine. She’s with Father Jere-“
He doesn’t let him finish the name and punches the one speaking on the chin. He loosens his grip, which gives an advantage to Wyatt, who frees himself from the other man’s grip.
He flings the door open.
Their sibling is unconscious – dead? On an operating table from hell. It was too late. He got here too late. He could hear them saying that “she” was stable, but that “she” was bleeding a lot.
Jeremiah turns to see where the noise was coming from. Wyatt arrives at the speed of a train. He notes the damage, the way they were cut open. The blood. The large scars, messily closed by a thread, on their little body. The mass of unrecognizable flesh beside them.
Wyatt is horrified at first, but then, everything becomes red. With no one to stop him, he jumps at Father Jeremiah’s throat, and he does intend to kill him. He pushed him to the ground, the leader tries pushing back, but it’s useless. Wyatt is a big unit. He can almost see his eyes poking out of his sockets, almost hear him choke his last breath.
But one of the nurses gets help. Of course.
One of Jeremiah’s puppets take him away. Red becomes black.
**
When Ghost wakes up, they feel a sharp pain in their stomach and in their chest. They’re sore all over. They can’t move much, but they recognize their bedroom’s ceiling. It’s dark.
Wyatt should be here by now.
Something happened to Wyatt.
Even though they’re in pain, they lift one limb after the other and get out of the bed. They’re wearing a bandage over their chest and their stomach. The bandages are redder than they are white. They’re only wearing black shorts.
Their chest is flat. They took their breasts.
Something else is missing, but they’d rather not think about it.
Ghost runs in the hallway, their body held by adrenaline only. There are lights outside the church.
They run out of the house. People are gathered in silent.
Something feels off.
They hear a prayer. Praying for Wyatt’s redemption.
They run outside, cold, wet grass touching naked their feet like kisses of Mother Nature. They get closer.
Wyatt is in the center of the circle, hands tied. His face is hidden by a brown fabric bag, but they’d recognize their brother anywhere. Before they can even yell, they hear the gunshot. They see the bullet leaving the gun in slow motion, they see it piercing through their brother’s head. They see his lifeless body falling.
The grass is painted red. There’s blood everywhere. More than on their bandages.
They scream from a thousand lungs, those of their ancestors.
Their fury will know no end.
November 2023
“Yes. I will help you kill him. And everyone else if it means I can save Ellie.”
They know from the look in his dark, brown eyes, that he has done it before.
The man and the archer shake hands. Ghost’s grip is firm, which surprises Joel.
“I will meet you at the same spot where you saw the rabbit. At midnight. ”
It’s usually when the patrol shifted, leaving them a small window to leave.
“Do you think she’ll be alive until then?”
“I want to say yes. But hope is a vain thing. I’m sorry, Joel.” They have to be realistic.
They get up.
“I have to go, or they will know something is up. Have to find a rabbit to replace the one you scared away.”
**
They have antibiotics and other medical necessities hidden inside their coat, and a few rations of dried meat they stole from the kitchen. Everyone ignored Ghost, they were a disgrace to the community. So, it was easy to steal when you were invisible.
They also had their trusty bow and arrow on their back.
They get out by the window, jump and land on their feet like a cat. They run towards the forest, until they get to the spot where they saw Joel earlier.
But something’s off.
There’s a familiar, but chilling clicking noise.
Joel appears out of nowhere and motions at them to stay quiet, with a thick finger pressed to his closed lips. He points his gun. But Ghost shakes their head and point their bow instead. They can’t risk making any noise.
The arrow shoots. Land into the disgraceful creature’s head. They shoot another one for good measure. The disgrace falls heavily in the snow.
December 2013
“You’re all good to go.” Stephanie says as she looks at their pinkish scars. There’s a large one on their chest, and one that goes down from their sternum to their lower stomach. “You healed surprisingly well. It’s a miracle.”
“Since you have such fight in you and such will to live… Maybe you’re worth something. But you’ll never belong. So you might as well mix yourself with any group you want, you’ll still be an outsider. I’m done trying to make you a man or a woman, you’re not worthy of our Creator.” Father Jeremiah says coldly from his seat.
Ghost silences their arrogance, they’re lucky to be alive.
Even though they should be dead.
Instead of Wyatt.
“May I go outside and hunt, Father?”
“Do whatever you need to do, child.”
“Thank you.”
That was the first time he trusted them.
**
They never went this far outside of the house. They ventured into the forest and shot everything they could find.
Rabbits.
Trees.
They even find a runner. They shoot it from afar.
They destroy anything they can find. It’s the only way they can let their anger out.
If they let it out elsewhere, they will die.
They get closer to the runner they just shot. They straddle the creature’s waist, gets their knife out and disfigures the creature, carving its skin, until it no longer looks human.
They hear a scream.
They realize it’s their own.
November 2023
“You’re a hell of a good shot, you know.” Joel remarks.
Ghost smiles, their teeth shining like the moonlight. They didn’t smile often.
“You have to find ways to entertain yourself when you’re stuck in a cult.”
They walk together, the only sound they can hear is their breath for a while.
“Is she still okay?”  Ghost finally asks.
“She’s breathing.” Joel exhales. The man looks so tired. Hopefully Ghost can give him so relief for the night, and he can sleep without worrying too much.
“Let me check on her and help out.”

Random Observations of Stede seducing Ed on accident in "The Best Revenge is Dressing Well" -
Tumblr media
Stede's quiet little "OK" when Ed says the French captain didn't get under his skin. He knows the truth, but he's also going to accept what Ed says and not push it.
Ed really getting into talking about Stede "fingering my dents."
That moment of isolation they both have - Stede as he gets pushed to the edges of the party, and Ed when he's alone at the table.
Stede being bullied for half the episode and not standing up for himself, but the second they start being mean to Ed, he's like, "So they've chosen death."
Ed fleeing the party to find the man who represents everything that he wants and yet could hurt him sitting there with Frenchie and Olu, talking about how spoons are stupid.
Stede just full-on coming into his own because these bastards were mean to his crush.
The bitchy little "...clever" Stede throws at Gabriel right before he eviscerates them.
Ed's look of shock/horniness when he discovers that Stede has caused a cannibalistic riot.
Stede's fucking homicidal grin.
Ed concealing the red silk from Stede at the beginning, but not at the end.
The moment Stede very gently takes the silk from Ed. How Ed's a little nervous about relinquishing it, that it might be used against him somehow, but he still lets it go. And then..."You wear fine things well."
That last, longing look.
Tumblr media
It's a damn sexy episode.

Ed and Frenchie connecting right away always makes me smile.
Their connection in 1x5 feels instinctual. We see Frenchie carefree, walking into the captain's quarters with a flourish in his new outfit. He's comfortable with them, and when Ed and Stede decide to go to the party, Ed right away asks Frenchie to come along if he doesn't have any plans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then when Ed walks out of the party upset Stede is not the only one to respond to that. Frenchie's body language immediately changes from relaxed and having fun to standing straight up, concern on his face followed immediately by a crack at the societal people.
We don't see it directly on screen but Frenchie and Olu used their earlier agreement with Abshir over the pyramid scheme to get Stede the information for the passive aggression moment.
We don't know much about Frenchie's past, only that he worked in "service," can play the lute, and is an absolute gem at pulling off ploys.
I have written about how Frenchie and Ed have similar coping mechanisms with their trauma, and while not on the surface or talked about, it adds to their connection.
(This connection also explains why Ed keeps Frenchie aboard at the end of the first season and why he chooses Frenchie to be first mate.)
Now I feel like I'm rambling but my point is, we learn so much about Frenchie's character in this episode and the relation between Ed and Frenchie is instant and sweet. I love the effortlessness behind connections between people in this show.
The Best Revenge is Dressing Well is a great episode and these small moments, this link makes it all the more deeper.
