Some thoughts about... Theatrhythm Final Bar Line... The Demo
I'm not bothering to spell-check "Theatrhythm". Any time I put the title down on paper and all associated typos are in the gods' hands.
Theatrhythm is one of the top 3 rhythm games and one of the best games on the 3DS, so I was very excited to hear about a new one. It just had one of the best progressions and meta gameplay systems in a game that totally changes how you play without ever changing the rules or core gameplay.
The new one... is pretty much this series again. And that's good! It adds a kind of "story mode" with the Series Quests. You go through a mostly linear progression of songs from a particular title and each song has a goal associated with it. The boss may also change stats or add special conditions to the fight. It's pretty basic stuff and doesn't drastically change how you play since most of the goals are just a variation on "play well", but they can force you to change up your team if the enemies inside have a resistance to the elements or attack types of your favored characters. There is also an "Auto optimize" button that purports to just pick the best team from what you have available, but it seems to only change your Summon and what skills the already equipped team uses. I thought it would match up a magic user with a magic stage and all that, so the current implementation leaves much to be desired.
Man though, there is a ton of content in the demo. It has multiple titles with multiple songs in each, you can get about a third of the way through the quests in the title, and there are at least 4, and usually more, characters unlocked for each title. Characters have a pretty generous level cap so it mainly just caps your "money" gained and prevents one type of item from dropping (the profile cards). It took me two days to get through the demo (and even then there are a few quests I couldn't complete with the current level caps) and the counter said I'd be at 4% quest completion if I transfer everything over to the full game.
The bad stuff. I'm totally not sold on the new multi-note system where you have to hit multiple lanes at the same time, even having to do multiple flicks at the same time. Thankfully, you can turn it off, but the UI in-stage doesn't change, so it can look a bit confusing. However, turning off the multi-notes also gets rid of all the flick triggers. I don't want to overly simplify it, I just want to get rid of the one bad thing. So easy is too easy and normal has the bad stuff. Ugh.
Also, the game really feels different without a stylus/touch screen. The physical movement of tapping, holding, tracing, and flicking was a part of the experience and just tapping a button on a controller is a poor substitute. Without the stylus, I really thought this franchise would be dead with the passing of the 3DS. And you're losing out on Street Passes. I was lucky enough to live in a populated area when the first game came out, so it was so fun getting those on the subway to/from work. Having it on a portable system was also nice because you could just flip it open, play a few songs, and then close it and get back to work, versus having to load up the console version. And no, I don't consider the Switch "portable" thanks to its size, battery life, lousy controllers, and cost compared to the DS.
There's a lot of content here, but also a crazy price point for the game. $50 for the basic game and $100 for the complete game with a nonsense system of DLC packs and exclusive songs. And of course, no one DLC pack is filled with great songs. Each one has a couple of good ones and then the rest are cruft. Just use the original's DLC implementation where you bought each song separately. I paid $10-20 for Theaterhythm, bought some DLC, AND bought Theatrhythm Curtain Call all for cheaper than just the basic version of this game.
I'm still looking forward to getting the full game and the demo did a fantastic job of assuaging fears about the new systems, but between the new systems and having to play it on a controller, the game feels noticeably worse to play and experience. There's nothing that can really be done about that given the original system the franchise was made for is dead now and the team did a fine job porting it to a controller, but it's just not the same. It takes Theatrhythm from a must buy to a wait for a sale, especially for all the DLC nonsense to get worked out.

My Favorite Fishing in Video Games Where Fishing is Not Core Game Play
A really awesome surprise for me is always to boot up a game that is full of action and suspense to be introduced to a fishing side activity. I have toiled away at fishing in games for hundreds of hours at least. It has gotten so bad in some instances that my friends have asked me why I haven’t just taken the plunge into real fishing. It’s definitely because that is a lot of work and in real life I don’t catch a fish every 30 seconds. They have also wondered why I don’t just play a fishing simulator like Planet Fishing (Shout out to Planet Fishing that’s a great game). And that’s where I have to think for a while. Fishing while you have better things to do like save the world is very special. You aren’t fishing because it’s the objective of the game or because that’s why you are there, you are fishing because it’s fun and maybe you need a break to swing a fishing rod instead of a sword. And then you can stop, and get back to fighting or whatever the rest of the game entails. Below are games that have fishing in them for mostly no reason at all. I have shamelessly spent way to long with my bait in these waters and absolutely loved every second of it and I hope that you (the reader) can find a lot of relaxation in these waters as well.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Series
Since the very first Pokemon game there has been fishing. You get the old rod from some guy and then you are free to fish up as many goldfishes that you want hoping that one of them will grow up to be a 21 foot tall dragon. Pokemon has combined their fishing with their main game play and makes you at least start a battle with the fish you drag onto shore. Now fishing in Pokemon is pretty subpar mainly because a single Pokemon game hasn’t really been known to have more than a handful of Pokemon that you can fish for. Also if you are looking for a strong water type Pokemon you could do a lot better than fishing for it. Typically a Pokemon player will fish about 5-10 times total. And although fishing for Pokemon isn’t all that great it has been in every game for over 20 years and that is pretty impressive. It’s a small detail that makes the world of Pokemon feel like a real world of wild creatures.
Tumblr media
Sonic Adventure DX
In Sonic Adventure DX you are given the choice to play as a lot of different characters, one of which is named Big the Cat. Most of the characters are combat characters that rely on speed and attacks to get through levels, some even wielding rocket launchers and extremely oversized hammers. However when you start the story of Big the Cat you are thrown in a completely opposite direction. Big the Cat is a giant purple cat who lives in the jungle with his best friend Froggy. Froggy accidentally swallows one of the most powerful objects in the Sonic universe and Big the Cat must chase him all over the world trying to fish him out of where he is hiding so that he can eject the Chaos Emerald out of him and they can return to their life in the jungle. The fishing mechanics in this game actually are really good and this is probably because Sega had just put out a series of mildly successful Bass fishing games before releasing this game. Either way its absolutely hilarious that Big the Cat gets to defeat Chaos 6 right before Super Sonic has his showdown with Chaos Perfect.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XV
In Final Fantasy XV you play as Noctis and his favorite hobby is fishing. When I first played this game I sped through it and never fished once and reached the end of the game never indulging Noctis in his hobby. When I replayed Final Fantasy XV I fished for 50 hours and then ejected the disc from my console. The fishing in Final Fantasy XV is surprisingly deep with a lot of the vendors supporting what you could call a fishing road trip. In the game it is extremely dangerous to be out at night so I would plan day trips to lakes to maximize the amount of fishing I would get to do. I would prepare days in advance to make sure I could afford the trip and that I had enough supplies to both protect myself at the lake and have enough supplies to last the whole day. Final Fantasy XV really is a game about getting really distracted and fishing is probably its best distraction. My days on the lake were the perfect balance of peaceful and rewarding, this game offers an awesome reward of well planned trips and a good haul of fish.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XIV Online
Final Fantasy XIV is the only game I have ever played where the fishing played exactly like its combat. When you are fighting enemies in a dungeon in FFXIV you are constantly adding buffs, landing hits, using consumables, and managing resource bars. When you are fishing in FFXIV you are constantly adding buffs, landing hits, using consumables, and managing resource bars. Note you are doing so at a much more leisurely and less life threatening pace but you are still doing it. I never maxed out the fisher class but I got it into the expansion content which was a really long and relaxing experience. Yet another Final Fantasy title where the real meat of the game is in getting distracted. When you fish you also sell on a player market that fluctuates based on market price just like real fish. You get the relaxing fishing side of the game and also an aggressive economic number crunching side as well. I spent way too long with a real pen and paper deciding how much I should sell for on any particular day and bossing around my two cat girl employees.The MMO aspect of the game adds so much to what you would expect to be a very solitary experience.
Tumblr media
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Have you ever gone fishing for hours to receive an empty bottle? That is exactly what kick started my addiction to fishing in Twilight Princess. An empty bottle in Twilight Princess means another way to heal yourself, another way to add oil to a lantern, another way to carry useless water around. The only way to get the 4th bottle in the game is to go to a dedicated fishing spot and fish until you pulled it out of the pond. The actual fishing is pretty weird, it involves motion controls which I still am not entirely sure what they do or how to properly use them but it is really fun to hold the pole in gyroscope and set the lure in the water waiting for fish to come get a nibble. Although the physics with the water make it difficult to see if you have actually gotten a bite or not it still is enjoyable the other 85% of the time it works.
Tumblr media
Stardew Valley
So this one is at the top of every other “fishing in games” list and there is a big reason for that. It’s really good. I think in my first Stardew Valley farm I gave up farming entirely and fished all day every day and stopped to buy food to replenish my energy and go back at it. I really didn’t care about getting rich or making enough money to expand the farm or get to know everyone I actually spent about 50 hours just fishing. The fishing takes some skill and a pretty keen eye but the random jerks of the fish and the rhythm of the game play are so fun to try to master. It’s a part of Stardew Valley that I felt like I was continuously improving on as time went on and it was really fun. I mean I don’t recommend it because you’ll end up moderately poor but it was really fun.
Tumblr media
Fantasy Life
Fantasy Life offers you 12 potential jobs, you could be a brilliant blacksmith or a devious potions maker, a lumberjack or a knight, a hunter or a seamstress. However your inner dad is calling and you decide you want to play through a fantasy RPG as a fisherman, hell yeah. the story is relatively short so you can quickly unlock a lot of locales to fish at and there is a manageable economy system that lets you deal in fish in advantageous ways. You can even pick up cooking on the side and make fancy dinners and sell the fish for higher you can do that as well. Fantasy Life is like a clever mix between Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy XIV and it kind of succeeds and falls short of it. The fishing also takes a good amount of skill and rhythmic approach to master so it doesn’t get boring almost at all until you have cleared the game.
Tumblr media
Maple Story 2
Maple Story 2 is one of the most expressive and cutest games that I have ever played. And the fishing is no different, its all about style. The fishing in Maple Story 2 is monotonous and can get old but you do it for the chibi clout. Because much like the rest of the game you can look however you want and do whatever you want and sometimes you just feel like kicking back and throwing lure in the water at the beach. I never got super into the fishing in this game but it won me over with its adorable design and stylish atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Animal Crossing Series
Of course I had to include the most popular game right now. Animal Crossing has become something of a connection between people when we can’t leave the house. A thing we all have in common on social media and with our friends. My first experience with Animal Crossing really starts with New Horizons and I was completely blown away. The fishing isn’t super complex or difficult but the range of what you can pull out of the water and what you can do with it is absolutely breathtaking. For a game about cartoon people living with humanoid cartoon animals the fish looking photo realistic. And the museum where they can be kept is stunning. The museum looks like it was designed to capture the feel of being in a museum and matches the design of all the great real life aquariums and observatories. Although it is a bit frustrating when your rod breaks it is easy enough to make one (or worst case buy one) to get your bait back in the water.
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Tell me I’m wrong, you can’t. Isabelle getting added to Smash brought a very powerful fishing move that isn’t practical all the time but is really funny. Wouldn’t recommend this game if you are looking to relax and fish but I do recommend hooking your friend with a fish hook and send them flying off screen if you had to.
Tumblr media
Minecraft
I have a very special role in Minecraft when I join a friends server. A role that I assign to myself. While everyone is off getting awesome swords, spelunking for diamonds, and exploring the infinite landscape, I build a small wooden shack and I set up a farm with an irrigation canal and start fishing. A steady supply of food is necessary and while I’m hanging out with my friends in a server I’m happy to be the one to provide it. The fishing in this game is probably the slowest of all the ones on this list but is the most useful. just throwing the fish in the oven creates food that can help keep you and your companions alive for a long time. I think I definitely have my limits with Minecraft fishing and I couldn’t do it for hours on end it is rewarding to set up shop and find a nice place to settle down for a few hours to fish.
Tumblr media
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
This is the only Tactical RPG in this post. Fire Emblem: Three Houses has sections between combat where you can go and talk to your students and do other activities. We aren’t here to discuss other activities though we are here for the fishing. The fishing allows you to catch fish for some reason that I’m sure is good but never intrigued me enough to learn. All I know about the fishing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses is that it’s fun. I started to bust through combat just so that I could get back to fishing. The funniest part about this one is that the fish has a health bar. Pressing the A button at the exact moment finds a way to become easier and still find ways to mess you up. Either way, I’m not that interested in tactical RPGs but I heard there was fishing in this game so I had to play it and it was worth it.
Tumblr media
Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
In Jak & Daxter, Daxter gets turned into a small animal by dark eco while exploring a dangerous island off the shore of his home with his best friend Jak. To get back to the island to investigate, the pair have to borrow a boat owned by a fisherman who is troubled by an invasive species of poisonous eel that is ruining his haul. He asks Jak to catch fish for him without catching any eels. This fishing mini game can only be done once but it is going to either be something you think is very unique or a huge waste of time. All I’ll say is that the sound that the fish makes when it goes into the net is absolutely a reward in itself it is so satisfying. But anyways, more intense than some other options here but get it done so you can get back to absorbing eco powers and jumping on stuff.
Tumblr media
Shovel Knight
Shovel Knight is a 2D action platformer but you can also fish. And you fish for the best kind of fish, money. You can get some other stuff too like health pickups and magic replenishers but we know what you want. You see that little glint and you pop out the fishing rod and pull out those money bags. If you are devoted enough you can even get a surprise from the Troupple King (long live his highness) if you fish out the right stuff. I don’t even know if I fished all that much when I played Shovel Knight but it’s hilarious that you can.
Tumblr media
NieR: Automata
I did not play a lot of NieR and that’s because I was fishing. I don’t know why all I did was fish but you throw your little robot in the pond and you lean on a magical stool so honestly it was good enough for me.
Tumblr media
Club Penguin
If you know then you know. In hind sight there really wasn’t a whole lot to do in Club Penguin but this mini game really messed me up. You basically get to move up and down, catching fish and avoiding trash and other hazards. Basically trying to do this and catch as much fish as possible to avoid having to ask your parents for real money to pay for snacks to feed a virtual ball of fluff with eyeballs. I don’t really remember how challenging it really was but I remember getting decently high scores to about like 100 fish per round so I guess it was pretty easy if I could do that at age 10.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 4
I’m gonna be very honest about this one and say that the fishing in Rune Factory 4 is basically just Animal Crossing fishing but more anime. The fish react to the pole the same, the fish almost look the same, and the buttons to respond are the same. What makes this one special is where you can take it. You can fish in the little moat in town, in the lake, in a dungeon full of monsters, in a lake that is eternally the season fall, anywhere. You are constricted by the boundaries of Stardew Valley and that is how much energy you have and how much time you have in the day. It’s still fun to fish but I wish that they had used their fun fantasy setting to give the ability to fish up some cool made up fish instead of strictly things that exist in real life.
Tumblr media
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Ok, diving, fishing, same thing. Diving in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is just fishing with your whole body. It works a lot in the same way as Pokemon where you fish up monsters to fight and get the rewards from them. It is a completely optional activity however if you decide to undertake the grind of scavenging in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 then you will never hurt for money ever again. It makes my wonder why Rex stopped being a salvager to do odd jobs because this was PROFITABLE. The main incentive is that there are spots that spawn a certain enemy that drop cores. Cores are like gacha or loot boxes that contain new anime girl partners that deal huge damage in fights. They even have their own side quests and story lines. I spent maybe 30 hours grinding before giving up on this game and while it does become tiresome I really enjoyed the random rewards of possibly getting a new companion or a really cool weapon.
It’s been tossed around that every great RPG has fishing in it. I won’t argue that point but a lot of great RPGs certainly do have fishing in them. Everyone needs a break sometimes and fishing is the perfect activity to remind us to stop and take that break. Even games can get long and without these distractions it might be so much harder to complete these harrowing tasks. Don’t forget to take breaks and just enjoy the sound of the water every once in a while because there’s no rush playing video games.
Honorable Mentions:
Kingdom Hearts: Sora fishing with his bare hands on Destiny Island
Persona 4: Weird aqueduct fishing
Persona 5: Marina fishing life
Sea of Thieves: A pirates life for me

I like Space Invaders Forever, so go buy this other collection instead ⊟
I’ve been playing the Space Invaders Forever collection whenever I get a spare moment on my Switch. And Space Invaders games, descending as they do from an arcade game with an average playtime of a minute or two, are eminently spare-moment-friendly. The three games in the collection are all Space Invaders variants, from the rhythm-rave Space Invaders Extreme to the mobile mashup Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders, all different, and all absolutely worth visiting or revisiting.
However, there’s something missing from this Space Invaders collection. Like... Space Invaders. If you want that, you’ll have to use the Japanese eShop account you use for demos (you have one, right?), get some Japanese eShop credit, and purchase the Space Invaders Invincible Collection. I know this sounds like a lot of work for ancient games, but it’s on sale right now for about $30, the same as Space Invaders Forever, and it comes with all the same games plus Space Invaders in both monochrome and color, Space Invaders Part 2, Majestic Twelve, and Super Space Invaders ‘91. I’m guessing anyone interested in a Space Invaders compilation is going to want a bigger Space Invaders compilation.
With that very important PSA out of the way, I’d like to discuss the three I’ve played on Switch. Extreme is a beautiful, thrilling game on any platform, but given that I mainly played on DS in the past, the pulsing techno visuals are mind-blowing on the much larger Switch screen and especially on the TV. It’s a very fast-paced take on the classic formula, with quick transitions between arrangements of invaders, with bonuses and power-ups flying out all over the place. It’s one of those deliberately overwhelming games, but uses that sensory overload to immerse you. It’s... good...
Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders is a port of a mobile game that I paid almost no attention to. I don’t know why, because it rules. Arkanoid-style games and Space Invaders-style games share a common ancestor in Breakout, so the combination isn’t that weird. In fact, using a paddle to reflect enemy shots is more fun to me than bouncing a single projectile around. Playing it on Switch is simultaneously weird and intuitive -- it plays only in vertical mode, and only on the touch screen, which totally works but makes me feel like I’m holding the console wrong.
Tumblr media
Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE is the weirdest pull in the collection. It’s a port of a game originally projected on buildings in Japan, a large-scale installation for 10-20 players. Gigamax 4 SE is scaled down to one screen and four players, but maintains the theme park ride feeling, bouncing you around in weird variants for multiple players to take on together. It’s not particularly deep, or balanced (it’s basically impossible for me to succeed alone!)
Tumblr media
Space Invaders is, at this point, primordial, almost a building block of a video game instead of a game itself. Even in its base form it’s still enjoyable, which is why it’s a bummer that said form is missing from the Western collection. The three variations on the theme presented here are all worthwhile, but I’m happy to be able to point you to the Japanese eShop where even more variations are available.

CONGRATS ON 100 MAE!!! i love your writing, so can i get a 🥰 for kitty?
THANK YOU SO MUCH OMGGG!! <333  this is way longer than i meant it to be but i had so much to say hahhaha
~~~~~
I shouldn't have come.
It was Kit’s first thought as soon as he stepped through the portal.
Holy shit, its hot. That was the second.
Despite growing up in LA, the three years he’d spent in the English rain had clearly changed his body’s temperature regulations. He was used to all encompassing grey dampness - seriously, how can one country have four seasons but they’re all just different variations of rain? - and the scorching sun hurt his eyes and made him sweat uncomfortably.
He took a deep breath, remembered all the advice about ‘just being himself’ that his dad had given him, and made his way up the path.
Inside the LA Institute was much the same hustle and bustle as before. It was like stepping into one of his dreams. Kit was greeted with a whirlwind of kind words and hugs, swiftly chased into the kitchen and handed a steaming cup of tea - “because, you know, you're English now!” Dru smiled brightly - and a chocolate chip cookie. Everybody was asking how he was, what he’d been up to, how were Mina, and Jem, and Tessa, how was his training going. Emma was particularly interested in the answer to that last question, and pulled him aside later to suggest training together so she could give him all kinds of tips and tricks. He realised, with a jolt, that he was slightly taller than her now.
The only person who didn’t greet him was Ty.
As he absentmindedly answered everybody’s questions, he glanced around the kitchen anxiously. Ty was the reason he was here. Maybe not officially, and maybe it wasn't something Kit wanted to tell everyone, but it was the truth regardless. After everyone was finished, and people began to wander away to get back to their day, Kit pulled Julian aside.
“Hey, do you... uhm...,” He ran a worried hand through his hair. “Have you seen Ty?”
Julian gave him a sad sort of half smile. “I think he went down the beach.”
-----------
The water was even bluer than he remembered, and the sand was warm between his toes. He made his way along the beach, trainers and t-shirt in hand. It was too hot for either of them. He was glamoured, so he wasn't worried about mundanes seeing the Marks that now twined their way along his strong arms and chiseled stomach. Sometimes, he had to do a double take when he looked in the mirror because he still didn’t recognise himself, even now. He still thought of himself as the scrawny, lanky, awkward-looking boy of years past.
He kept scanning the beach over and over again, looking for any sign of Ty. There were none.
He kept walking.
He kept walking until he recognised the cave that Ty and he had met with Shade - well, Ragnor Fell - in and a sudden pang shot through his heart at the memory. He walked in slowly, automatically reaching for the witchlight Ty had given him, when he realised he didn’t need it. The cave was already lit.
Kit froze in the small, corridor like hollow at the front of the cave. He stared, wide eyed, at various candles that were littered around the room, the books that were stacked neatly in the corner, and the small, wooden table and camping chair that sat in its centre. But mostly, he stared at the figure sitting at the table. Beautiful. His head was bent over a small gaming console, the Herondale necklace hanging next to Livvy’s locket at his throat, long fingers moving rapidly, black hair curtaining his face, headphones over his ears. Kit blinked, sure he was seeing things, but no.
He’d found Ty.
He drank in the image of him in the dim light. He was taller now, his legs longer, but he had the same slender build. Kit saw the small muscles rippling in his arms under the grey t-shirt he was wearing as his fingers worked. He nearly collapsed. It had been so long, so long since he'd held him on the roof of the London Institute, so long since he’d told him that he loved him, so long since he’d watched him from afar on the beach for the final time, and yet he still felt his heart rate increase and he still wanted to run his hands through the muddle of black hair on his head and he still wanted to part his lips with his own. He still felt the same.
Ty must have sensed the fact he was being watched then, because he turned his head and looked at Kit. His grey eyes, shining like two silver rings in the candlelight, widened in surprise and he stopped playing his game. He was staring at Kit’s chest.
Kit was suddenly acutely aware of the fact he didn’t have a top on. He felt himself flush.
Ty pulled his headphones off, putting them around his neck. The inside of Kit’s wrist throbbed at the sight.
The silence was deafening. They were both just staring; Kit at Ty’s earphones, Ty at Kit’s chest.
Finally, after what was probably seconds but felt like hours, Kit had to say something.
“Uhm.... hey.” He gave a small, awkward wave. Smooth, dumbass.
Ty flicked his eyes away and stared fixedly at the cave wall directly ahead of him. His mouth was in a hard line, and his right hand was tapping out a fast rhythm on the arm of his chair. Kit swallowed hard.
“Why did you leave me?” Ty said, his voice barely above a whisper
Kit felt his heart break in two, right then and there. Tears welled up in his eyes. It took everything in him not to go over and put his arms around Ty, but he knew he wouldn't want that. He dropped to his knees instead, bending his head so his blonde hair would hide his face.
“Because,” his ragged voice caught in his throat. “Because I loved you. Because I still love you, even now. Because you're the most beautiful boy I’ve ever seen. Because I want to be near you all the time.” Every thought, every word, he’d been holding in for three years seemed to be tumbling out. He didn’t stop them. “Because you make me laugh. Because I want to be there for you. Because i dream about you. Because i need you.” He put his head in his hands as a sobbed racked his body. He could feel Ty looking at him.
“You left because you love me?” The confusion was clear in Ty’s voice.
Kit took a deep, shaky breath. “Yes. But I mainly left because you don’t love me.” It was not accusatory: his voice was hollow and tinny in his own ears.
“But Kit, I do love you.”
Kit snapped his head up.
“What?”
“I do love you.” Ty got up, placed his console on the table and came to sit cross legged in front of Kit, looking directly into his eyes. “Why do you think I’m in this cave? Why do you think I’m wearing this necklace?” He pointed at the Heron. Kit shrugged. “I’m here because this is a place we were together. I come here when i want to be with you. And I wear this because it’s the closest thing I have to being yours. It makes me feel closer to you.” Ty looked down at his hands then, and even in the dim light, Kit could see he was blushing.
“But... but....” It was Kit’s turn to be confused now. “Why didn’t you come to see me today? I had to come and find you. You weren’t there.” He was aware he sounded like a whining child, but he couldn't help it.
"I’m sorry. I just didn’t know what to say, and i didn’t know want to say anything in front of the others, and i thought you might...” His voice wavered. “I thought you hated me.”
“Oh, Ty,” Kit reached out for his hand, instinctively, and Ty let him take it. “I could never hate you, not ever.”
Kit turned his own wrist over to show the small outline of Ty’s headphones he had tattooed there. Ty traced it with his finger wonderingly. His touch sent chills all the way through Kit’s body.
“I have spent the last three years waking up every morning and loving you even more than i did the day before, even when i didn’t think that was possible.” Kit’s voice was low and steady. Ty laced their fingers together. “I have spent the last three years dreaming about you, and crying when i realise you're not there.” Kit leaned forward, putting his face level with Ty’s. “I have spent the last three years running away from the best person i’ve ever met,” he dropped his voice to a low whisper. “But i don’t I don’t want to run anymore.”
And then his lips were on Ty’s, and everything in the world made sense.
NINJAMUFFIN DOING ANOTHER AMA ON TWITTER, HERE'S MORE SHIT FOR YA! keep in mind i'm just sharing the funkin related stuff, though i am including WAAAAY more than what i shared before 👍 go check out ninja's twitter profile for questions about stuff like ritz! questions in blue, answers in orange. if yall don't wanna read everything i MIGHT make a version of this post where i replace the answers with my own summaries of em (and if the questions are long, those too)
and here's a link to the ama tweet itself! dunno if it's still goin
Q: I figure the answer will be yes but do you have more plans to implement more guest appearances from people in the newgrounds community into FNF? Or are you all gunna focus on OG lore and stuff going forward
A: for guest appearances, I think we have always seen it as getting a healthy mix of both. PERSONALLY I'd like to lean towards having more OG stuff than guest stuff, BUT it's all a matter of what other boys think of that as well. I'm not the sole person working on game!
Q: Are you gonna release the full FNF game or are you gonna be releasing week after week? Like, are you gonna release week 8 or are we gonna wait some years until The Full Ass Game comes out?
A: Release plan for FNF right now is a few more updates or whatev to the 'demo' we have out right now, and then a long silence of probably no updates whatsoever until the full game is done (which will likely be a few years). That's partly why we made kickstarter for game.
Q: Hey so like, how much will Fnf cost after it's finished? And when will you ask the supporters what they want the game on?
A: It's all subject to change, but right now it prob gonna be standard 15-25$ lil steam indie game.
We will ask Kickstarter pledgers and whatnot what they want the game on SUPER close to when its released, to keep options open if we get onto anything like a console people want.
Q: 1. how was your day
2. are you releasing a week 8 song early like week 7, or are you goin full lockdown
A: I am doing GOOD today, and I think recently I've been good in general.
up to the mood, but so far we doing good about not having anything leak or whatev, so I think it'd be fun to have update come out with people not knowing what to expect at all. Build dat intrigue
Q: Will fnf ever get official plushies?? Seems like an untapped market
A: FNF plushies will prob happen some point, we have a lot of current merch stuff on our plates already though! (Mostly kickstarter type stuff, shirts, pins, posters, and all the physical OST stuff) Its a lot to sort out, but in time more and more stuff will happen. We r jus 4 boys!
Q: did you ever expect your game to blow up as it did? what was your first reaction to seeing it become super popular
A: FNF never had a humble moment, literally day 1 before the prototype even came out, the vid on twitter had like 5K likes overnight. Then when ludum dare version came out, it got 5K likes again, like it wasnt just a fluke. Was crazy, and def felt like somethin was different wit FNF
Q: Do you plan on getting other people to come in to help with the music? That seems like a lot of work to dump on one person, what with the erect mode and whatnot.
I guess the question could apply to all aspects of development. Will you be bringing on more people to help?
A: We definitely are getting help from other people. We are always keeping an eye on people for various different things. In terms of programming, already I've gotten 2 people (MtH and Geokureli) to help with certain Week 7 stuff (charting/polish, and loading stuff). Shit like dat
Q: Oh, also, will the Steam version be Workshop compatible? That'd really help streamline the process of downloading mods.
A: Steam version of FNF will likely NOT be Steam workshop compatible, because we want all the mods to NOT be spread out through different places. There WILL be modding support that is as streamlined as Steam workshop though. Mainly for non-steam versions of the game!
Q: Are there any chances that the game will have a physical release? Also any updates on a switch port? I remember one of you guys talking/joking about it.
A: Not impossible for FNF to get a physical release. We would want to see how far we could go with it though. I think it'd be super easy to do something wit people like LimitedRun games or whatev, but I think stuff like that can only go so far. I wanna see Funkin in mf Walmart!!!!!!
not that LimitedRun isn't going to be an option! Just we consider and pursue many different things! FNF release is years away, so we have time to think about everything. Whole mindset can be different just a few months from now.
Q: Out of curiosity, how are you dealing with all the popularity? It blew up so fast id barely be able to handle it if I was in your shoes.
A: The only way I've been able to handle it is having the other boys on the crew and being able to talk to them about all the overwhelmingness.
Part of it feels very lonesome, feels like NO ONE can come close to comprehending exactly how I'm feeling, except them. also other PALS!!!
Q: Do you own any of the bootleg FNF merchandise? Like any bootleg plushies or anything?
A: i dont, i genuinely think they r a waste of money, and I know any bootleg shit that gets made, we can prob go about and make it, and make it 100x cooler because we actually put effort into shit. bootleg shit just in it for the coin, so they aint gettin that from me
Q: How did you go about getting in contact with sr pelo for skid and pumps vocals?
A: Pelo i think was familiar and pals wit PhantomArcade a bit thru various Newgrounds things and collabs and whatnot.
pelo retweeted the first OG FNF posts first ever, and brought a LOT of attention to it. to pay him back, we put skid and pump in game! ask dave for more info prob
Q: what's the plan for having the full ass game open source if it's gonna cost money? couldn't people just download the source and compile the game for free?
A: when FNF is fully released, the full source code will be released as well.
the game will be DRM free so it will be way easier for people to redistribute the released/offical .exe instead of compiling it, so that's not the issue anyways. people will pay for things if they like it
Q: What are the chances of it getting on consoles like switch or Playstation, ps5 would definitely be my preferred way to play
A: it'd be a matter of hiring someone to build out backend stuff for those specific consoles. someone who knows their way around all the wacky code stuff, AND knows console hardware stuff. Then its just a matter of hittin up those console manufacturers (Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo)
the CLOSEST one is SWITCH. pretty much all of that backend is already made, so it just a matter of gettin all that access and shit.
i think in any case though, there's a lot of NDA stuff required, i dunno how much we'd be able to talk about it even IF we get that stuf sorted
Q: any ideas of releasing it on epic store or another platform?
A: Right now, the only thing that is 100% confirmed and WILL happen is a Steam version, itchio version, and mobile versions on respective app stores. Other storefronts aren't out of the picture though, but we don't want to spread ourselves too thin with it.
Q: Will you continue using HaxeFlixel to make the rest of FNF?
A: yes, because it is what I'm the most technically proficient in, and generally is VERY flexible. just a matter of ME becoming a better coder. It's ALL open source, so if I need something done a certain way, either I can do it, or we can hire someone to do it.
Q: have you seen game theory's videos on your game yet and if so, what do you think about them? (not talking about his predictions because i dont want spoilers. i like mystery)
A: it is always good silly fun to watch the Game Theory vids about Funkin with some pals, and see what matpat thinks of the game. i lov the vids, but wish he used my face less! Or at least used a cuter pic of me like this one!!
Tumblr media
Q: Ok so: What does the future of FNF look like to you?
A: future of FNF is a rhythm game that not only exceeds every expectation that people have of it, but subverts most expectations and conventions as well.
Q: Do you plan on retouching on older weeks once the game is fully out? Like reanimating sprites, redoing some charting, updating the background, etc
A: retouching and probably overhauling certain aspects is almost definitely gonna happen. Everything is fluid and can be changed (and should be changed when necessary). i dont think anything should be too attached to, especially this early on in development
Q: I honestly do not care if the answer to this is vague as hell to keep surprises and shit lol but… Since Week 7 was the closest we’ll get to a playable girlfriend (still bf controlling tho), do you have plans to make girlfriend playable in spin-off things or just freeplay?
A: wouldnt be out of the picture for a playable GF, i don't think we've had some hard thing AGAINST it. just a matter of what we want out of the game, and what sort of story or whatev we could do with that concept
Q: How do BF and GF manage to meet famous newgrounds characters (such as pico, tankman and the others to come) like is this all in one universe/ timeline or are they being brought in?
A: i think they are all just there existing. i think there's a lot of wacky things in other media that try to justify crossovers, like MULTIVERSE bullshit or TIMELINE shit, but i dunno, its like subspace emissary. Captain Falcon and Olimar from Pikmin just hang out. Shit like dat
disclaimer that all lore shit is in phantomarcade head pretty much and maybe there is wacky dimensions or somethin
Q: Will the game have dlc?
A: its not too unlikely that we'd have expansions of some sort, but i mean right now we plan on packing in as much as we can into base game, and trying to make that as pure as possible.
if there is ANY dlc, i would personally want it to be 100% free updates
Q: How did you meet Phantom Arcade, Kawai Sprite, and EvilSker? And what do you think about the community and its controversies?
A: me and phantomarcade been fukin around NG for years so years and years ago we naturally crossed paths and became pals
about 2 years ago i found kawaisprites music on NG, and started talkin wit him, made Ritz wit him and we fell in lov
and evilsk8r i met cuz of FNF!!!
quik elaborate on evilsk8r, wanted artist for gamejam FNF was for (ludum dare), and OG person i asked wasnt available, so he referred me to evilsk8r, who I have never met or talked to before ever.
Holy shit my thoughts on Mind over Mutant got surprisingly complicated so uh here’s a massive discussion under the cut, lol.
Out of all the main post Naughty Dog games... this might be my favourite after all? It’s far from perfect, but I think I had the most satisfying experience overall.
To start, visually everything looks pretty good. Granted I’m using the PS2 version which has a few visual bugs because it was designed for Wii and X360 graphics more, but generally I like how it holds up? Shame 360 emulators aren’t a thing as of now, and I’m not buying some old console just for one game, lol. Speaking of PS2, there’s no Coco option because apparently her moves were too complex for the system, RIP.
To start... yes, fuck the backtracking. It’s perfectly reasonably why this pisses people off. For me, it’s mainly the transition between Wumpa Island and the Ratcicle Kingdom since you have to go through AND back twice, with little variation. Other paths at least have you only needing to retread once for the story or there’s a new extra path in it that unlocks. At least some of the enemies change up I guess? But honestly, I think what bugs me more is that it’s not exactly consistent in its implementation. Because for a while, yeah you’re going back and forth retreading old ground, but then you get the key for the Junkyard on Wumpa Island and you’re just teleported to the Junkyard gate. Same thing happens when you get the Uka Uka bones. And of course, there’s the teleporters to find said bones, which is kind of striking a middle ground. Basically... it’s kinda inconsistent. Tedious when it is, but when you suddenly start to get used to it, you’re given massive leaps lol.
There’s stuff from Titans that was changed that I don’t really understand why? For example, the block with Crash no longer has a dodge, and dodging is now purely responding to mutant attacks. I like the addition to help even out things between Crash and mutants, but why no dodge normally? There’s no board sliding anymore, nothing calls for it obviously so it may have been pointless but it is kinda funny. Also Crash’s glide is replaced with the spin drill, which of course has its uses, but I miss having that glide too (you could have both, maybe the drill is by holding square or even pressing triangle, IDK).
On the topic of Crash, I kinda feel like Crash’s gameplay is oddly sidelined? I think it’s because of the mutant storing. Even if there’s less combat, much of the platforming now uses the mutants, and because there’s only some sections where you have to be Crash, it means you end up being Crash rather sparingly unless you really want to stick to him. Like, mutant storing is a good idea and works with the kind of game, but compare to Titans where even if it was more combat focused, the fact you had to use Crash in more parts meant you end up playing as him more than this game, and thus it feels like he has more of a presence with his own move set.
The combat felt off at first, but I ended up realising it’s because I became used to the Titans system... to start, it’s less intense and slower paced. You’re rarely gonna be swarmed so you actually have a chance against enemies. There’s also the mutant mojo upgrades, which means your mutant actually grows stronger with each upgrade, making combat different each time.
I like how they use mojo... for the most part. I like that the mutants can now be upgraded, and Crash of course grows stronger. My one reservation is that the upgrades don’t feel that diverse? In Crash’s case it’s probably because he keeps most of his moves from Titans, but still, only strength and spin upgrades isn’t the most exciting. Same with the mutants, getting stronger and the occasional special attack boost is cool, but it’s not the most exciting. I guess I need to view it like a Ratchet and Clank situation, because that’s what this is more like... including the multiplier. Including a multiplier with your combo level to make mojo worth more helps a lot with upgrading.
Because mutant gameplay is now more diverse instead of just a few classes that do their job, it also comes across as more inconsistent? I like that there’s improvements like them being able to jump now and more attack variations eg from when you block or jump and hit attack, but I also find some of it a bit awkward. Like, many of these attack variations are cool, but the tutorials give fuck all clues to them, so it’s hard to figure everything out.
For example... seriously, it took me ages to figure out how to use the TK in combat. TK is a pretty fun mutant, but until you figure out how to shoot and combine attacks with their telekinesis, you’re gonna be stuck to slow heavy attacks and awkwardly throwing enemies around.
I also find the Rhinoroller awkward. Because of the new moveset compared to Titans, it’s on one hand less slow, but on the other, it can get pretty annoying to control.
Ratcicle feels kind of overdeveloped. They can freeze stuff AND surf on shallow water. I mean, it’s great, but it kinda makes the other mutants look less exciting, lol. But yeah, one of the best mutants in this game because they definitely thought of much.
There’s a few mutants that are fun to play as like Spike, Sludge, and Battler, but unless you go outside the main story, they don’t really feel like they have much of a presence. The introduction pacing feels off, basically.
Snipe and Stench are back as ranged mutants. Snipe suddenly gets an upgrade and is pretty fun to play. Stench I’m not so crazy about, like now their special attack isn’t ranged anymore so that kinda messes up the gameplay with them, and while the fire rate is improved from Titans, every now and then they do a reload animation which I assume was meant to add detail, but all it does is slow the gameplay down and make the rhythm of firing off.
Magmadon is around, and while they aren’t underused, I do think it’s a bit of a missed opportunity with this game’s increased platforming focus that it doesn’t have any fire/lava abilities. There’s only one place that’s too hot for other characters and thus making them necessary too. Like, imagine if you could use it to melt through ice or even metal, eg a door that must be melted down to progress. Sludge’s shrinking ability is only used like two or three times (and I think only one is mandatory), so I think there’s missed opportunities there too. The shapeshifting and extendable arms stuff could’ve made for some cool mechanics. Adding more platforming abilities for mutants might overcomplicate the game of course, but... still. Especially with Sludge, give them some more use, even for secrets and such. Speaking of secrets... Spike needing to use the special attack on that one spiky part on the way to Mt Grimly is pretty random, huh?
Scorporilla and Yuktopus serve their role as the massive powerhouses (and Scorporilla even gets a beefed up melee combo), though I must admit it’s odd Yuktopus is now demoted to a regular enemy/sub-boss class (seeing two in the minigames was surreal when I was young lol). And I mean, random changes in design and stuff is something I find odd in general. I mean, the returning mutants mostly have improved designs, but for others I’m not as sure on, eg Rhinoroller looking less rhino-y, and Sludge suddenly being a boar instead of an frog or chameleon or whatever it was in Titans. Guess some is NV mutations but whatever, lol.
On the topic of enemy design, one thing I miss from Titans is the colour and outfit variations. Maybe they had less time to do it and at least the single models they get look good, but still, it’s a shame. We do get the hero mutants, but the PS2 version fucks up their looks for some reason, lol (and for some reason their mojo upgrades separately from the standard of their species, which is weird, especially since it’s not counted in the game’s completion).
Grimlys are cool, probably my favourite mutant in the game. Kinda funny how they don’t have a block and instead a lock on function, but it makes sense given they’re meant to be used faster than other close range mutants. But yeah, time slowing is so cool it’s even back in Crash 4 with one of the new Quantum Masks. Really helps you rake up that combo count to get all that mojo too.
The minions are... interesting. They mostly do their job, but then suddenly you have Doom Monkeys and Znu that have these massive stun attacks that can get annoying if there’s a lot of them. Slap-Es can block but as long as you’re not Crash they’re as quick as any others. The Doom Monkeys are less annoying in speech too, thankfully.
I get a few audio bugs. Most annoying of which is being unable to hear enemy conversations. But sometimes I just got sound effects cut out for no reason. On the inverse... some of the mutants are very noisy and need to shut up. Aku Aku also sometimes adds commentary when unnecessary, making him feel a bit handholdy. Yes, I’m going to the damn roller village, be patient, dude.
Probably the thing to impress me most revisiting the game is actually the continuity and worldbuilding. I mean, to start, you have all the mutants becoming free and forming their own societies, only for the NVs to turn them into evil warriors again. Said societies are pretty interesting as well.
Wumpa Island is mostly the same (sans all the stranded Ratinicians gone wild lol), but then you have the Ratcicle Kingdom. A Kingdom formed mostly out of ice, and also near Cortex’s evil public school. Nothing like this was in Titans, so was there always a cold part of Wumpa Island, or did the concentration of Ratcicles allow them to make enough ice to form a cold climate and society despite this being tropical nearby? All the designers and stuff are cool, and some of the characters are quite peculiar (I love that one masochist Ratcicle lol).
Then there’s the Ice Prison and Evil School. IDK how the Ice Prison was made, but it seems like it’s Cortex’s doing since the Brat Girls run it AND Evil School (while also being students?). As one of those lore junkies that headcanons Wumpa Island is the second island from the original Crash games, this fits oddly well, because in Twinsanity Cortex suddenly has a massive floating Iceberg lab. Maybe Cortex also made the school and prison nearby, and the Ratcicles took their Wumpa Island residence and connected Cortex’s base. Yeah, I’m getting crazy with my speculation, but the game letting you fuel this is fun. Also cool how the Brat Girls leave Nina after she loses in Titans and end up as Cortex’s grunts, ironically.
The Wasteland seems new, and I assume it’s the evolution of the Lumberyard from Titans. We also have rhinoroller elders even if it’s only two years of existing lol.
The Junkyard is apparently born out of the remains of N Gin’s weapons factory (I heard somewhere the Weapons factory was apparently on N Sanity Island but IDK if that was ever confirmed, it makes more sense it was on Wumpa Island TBH but if it was imagine all that junk moved there lol, TBH Cortex Island could work for the weapons factory too, it would make things less cluttered and it’s possible there’s still unpolluted beaches but whatever). It’s a pretty cool setting, and the Doom Monkeys being in the remains of their old location but under new leadership (and somehow with rockets removed from their heads... maybe they were merely aesthetic? lol) is nice continuity. Judging from the concept art it also seems to be around that volcanic area in Titans, which makes sense given that had more machinery.
Mt Grimly is completely new. Surprisingly it’s not an evolution of the Uka tree (though there is one creepy tree place with the hero Grimly on Wumpa Island), and as a result it’s much harder to work into my 2nd island headcanon (I mean, at least that island always had a giant tree lol). Cool location, but unfortunately we don’t really learn much about its normal state compared to the other worlds, unless it’s permanently inhabited by evil dudes, lol. Also I still wonder what the heck the Znu and Grimlys are. Are the Znu supposed to be the same thing as Grimlies? Are the Grimlys NV transoformed Znu??? Who knows.
Even the changing enemies in revisiting locations relates to the story. For example, the sludges in the Junkyard will say how Slap-Es and Stenches have appeared from “the sky”. Besides random occasional appearances from different mutants in various locations, you also have the Znu and Doom Monkeys moving out of their home levels to the previous ones after you make it through said levels the first time. I’m very perplexed by the sudden increase of Battlers when you revisit evil school and the ice prison paths though... either they’re also favourites of Cortex, or the Brat Girls disappointed Cortex after he saw Crash break into school and Nina helped him and he... used NVs on them to make new Battlers. Other stuff like Snipes in the Wasteland because of the Snipe hero are clear enough, but this one is... interesting.
There are some inconsistencies that bug me though. For one, it feels like nobody acknowledges Cortex’s blog video. Aku Aku acts surprised that N Brio is back and working with Cortex, and later wonders how Brio gets dark mojo even though Cortex explicitly says he’s using Uka for that. IDK, I guess Aku Aku doesn’t like watching internet videos and expected Crash and Coco to do everything, lol (I mean, he doesn’t really acknowledge it after watching anyway). Also a bit confused on how evil school works... it’s implied the Brat Girls are the main students, especially when one NPC says it’s all girls, but the intro video includes all genders and shows non-Brat Girls so... something’s up (maybe the NPC misheard or the ad was lying and only had girls because EVIL). Also apparently there’s another evil school somewhere besides Madame Amberly’s (is it also public? how is it public, is there a government funding these evil schools? did Cortex declare some regime?).
The humour and cutscenes are mostly pretty fun and there’s many funny moments. There are a few jokes that are... questionable at best (Uka I know you’re evil, but you don’t need to be ableist), and some of it probably seems outdated, but I actually appreciate most of it. The 2D cutscenes in different styles simulating changing channels like you have an NV is cool and has some pretty fun jokes with them, though it does suck you don’t see some character models well if at all as a result. The whole satire of consumerism and the latest tech fads was a nice addition (between this and the different mutant powers and stuff, it’s almost a classic Ratchet and Clank type game), not to mention wild stuff like evil recycling (and I mean, green movements ARE co-opted soooo) and many edgy but still mostly jokes I doubt would pass today.
Bosses are fine. Cortex was fun, but Coco was too easy (plus she’s freed from NV control a bit too soon, they could’ve saved her for the Ice Prison or even Evil School or something to raise the stakes, I mean if you’re not gonna fully commit to playable Coco then you may as well go the N Tranced route). Crunch wasn’t as hard as I remember, in fact he was kinda underwhelming. If anything the Scorporilla and Yuktopus acting as sorta sub-bosses in-story were better fights than saving the bandicoots (also one of the sludges says Crunch is Crash’s brother... confirmed?). Also small nitpick but why doesn’t Coco have her evil model in the enemy profiles, even as she has her boss lines?
Music is legit one of my favourite soundtracks in the series, Marc Baril doesn’t get enough credit. He manages to have such a range and it all works so well even as it has a distinct and fitting style.
Voodoo doll collecting is more involved which is cool, and there’s also golden wumpa now serving as health upgrades because we don’t have lives anymore. Yeah, Titans and MoM did gold wumpa first, not CTR:NF and Crash 4. At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if it showed up even earlier. Minigames are optional too which means less stress for 100% completion, though there’s also the arena minigames (oh hey, more Ratchet and Clank similarities), and they unlock enemy skins... unfortunately unlike Titans which had skins for every enemy, there’s only a few skins here (one for each world’s games), which is disappointing.
Anyway... yeah. Mind over Mutant isn’t as polished as Titans and is a bit messy and inconsistent in some places (most likely because this game has less time than Titans), and some of the backtracking is tedious, but in general I had a pretty good time with it, and was actually pleasantly surprised by some things.
How do people manage to concentrate on working out for more than 2 minutes? I know so many people who do this for fun and I just don’t get it, how do you manage to make it INTERESTING to you?
Years and years ago I bought this device I saw on TV a long time before buying it and it’s called 5-Minute-Shaper, and well, it’s very effective, I have to admit! I bought it because it’s supposed to affect every area in your body and I really needed something that’d affect my stomach and back muscles because what I did at work was always affecting only one side of my body because I’m right handed and you also use the pitchforks and brooms etc. (I’m a horse groom) from one side only, unless you have time and remember to train the other side of your body too, but it’s always time-consuming because it’s the same as trying to draw with your left hand if you’re right handed. I sometimes did this but not too often because, like I said, it’s time-consuming and I often didn’t have extra time. Mainly I did so if I was alone but that also meant that I was pretty much doing something the whole 10-12 hours there because the longer it took to do all the morning stuff, the sooner you had to start with the afternoon stuff.
My work often made me so exhausted and tired that I was not able to use this device at all, as my body just was already so worn out from my work that it physically could not do any more things after work. And if you think about it, there’s no weights on this device, just different steepnesses and all the weight there comes from your own bodyweight. And I weigh a lot more than anyone would guess, people always look at me and think I weigh at least 20kg less than what I ACTUALLY do. And I still don’t know what causes that so I keep saying I have just really heavy bones. (Or maybe I just still have so much muscle left from work, even tho you can’t really tell if that’s muscle or not because I don’t look like I’d be in shape...)
I’ve been “losing weight” due work so many times, or maybe I should say I’ve gotten slimmer and then fatter again so many times over the past 5-10 years and everyone I tell this to refuses to believe that the kg’s have been staying at same for at least 7 years. I’ve never gone below this certain number and it just keeps sliding inside this ten the whole time. Right now I’m at the top of that number, the same I was 5 years ago too.
Before I’ve tried so many things. I had an app in my phone, I’ve tried writing down a schedule and what not but it just doesn’t work. I cannot maintain my concentration for more than a few minutes because literally nothing is happening there. And I just end up feeling shit even after those few minutes because my body is so sensitive to warmth. And then my medical trauma kicks in. I don’t like the fact whenever I do something that makes my heart rate increase, it just never can come down normally. It always has to do this where it beats faster, then skips random beats (palpitations), then goes faster again, then again I get palpitations until it calms down to what’s my normal. And whenever I have these palpitations, I cannot concentrate on anything else but them. I just sit and stare into the void, breathe and listen to my body and wait until my heart is done with its shit. All I need to do is to walk upstairs and I have this. It has nothing to do with my shape or health, I can crouch and get up and I already have faster heart rate and palpations. I guess when I’m crounching, my body shape just doesn’t let enough blood to circulate to my thighs and stomach and whenever I get up, it has to do it faster because I also need to breathe slightly slower.
Another thing I have a problem with: breathing while working out. It’s so damn hard to get this right and I don’t know what even is right, but no matter how many times people try to explain this to me, I cannot have my body do different things in different rhythms. I’ll always try to match them to each other, e.g. I know I should breathe a certain way but I don’t know how to do that because I automatically start to either breathe to the rhythm of my heart or to the rhythm of the working out, which is not always the best either, or then I start to concentrate on my body too much and try to control my heart beat with my breathing so that it’d match the rhythm of the working out. I can’t even count my own heart rate because I immediately try to match it to how seconds work and when it doesn’t follow that... well of course it doesn’t follow that! Same as when I should count a horse’s heart beat, and their heart beats much much slower than human’s, I automatically start to count mine. Or the seconds. And can’t follow the horse’s.
I want to get myself a stationary bike, tho. Actually I’ve already got one but it’s broken, of course. And I’d get a working one from my aunt but idk when are we going to bring it here. This I could use while watching TV which would be so great since I’d then have something to make the exercising be the side thing to do (this is why I love horse work - I get to work out without it feeling like working out nor becoming boring), but I have another problem: what to watch? I know so many people do this while they play video games but I don’t have game consoles and I don’t know how could I make it work with my computer... I use keyboard and mouse, and I’ve never used controllers and don’t even own one. I know they’re not that hard to find anymore and could buy one only for this, but idk.
I also have a normal bike but biking makes my neck and head and throat hurt so much I always feel like I’m dying afterwards. I’ve never understood it when people feel good after sports. I’ve never felt so, I’ve always felt just awful. Probably just once I felt good when I was playing badminton with a friend and my siblings probably over 10 years ago, and I was sweating so much and walked straight into a shower afterwards, that’s when I felt good. But it’s the only time I’ve felt good, apart from those times when I’ve worked with horses. (Even tho even there I have some things I can’t do because I physically start to hurt so much from breathing too fast and much.)
Is Super Mario Party Worth Buying for Solo Players?
Tumblr media
I almost passed up Super Mario Party, simply because I play videogames solo and online. Yet I love the Mario universe--the characters, the humor, the music, the atmosphere--and reviews indicated this was a very solid, well-designed game...for multiplayer.
But then Gamexplain posted its SMP discussion, describing this entry in the Mario Party franchise as being very single-player-friendly.
I took the plunge and risked my $60. Was it worth it?
Tumblr media
In my case, absolutely; I’ve been having a blast with Super Mario Party. The character animation bursts with personality and charm, there’s a ton to collect and unlock, the music is wonderful, the boards are well-designed, the Joy Con rumble is used creatively and...most importantly...I’m finding the single-player experience to be a lot of fun.
To be clear, this is not a AAA top-notch Nintendo solo experience on par with Super Mariokart 8 Deluxe, Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. Not even close. And it can’t be played in handheld mode, as it requires players to use a single joy-con (I’ve been playing in tabletop mode). But, as a game offering a more casual, humor-packed diversion for Mario fans, this is pretty great.
Tumblr media
The minigames are terrific (many are laugh-out-loud funny and one is absolutely terrifying). The four boards are imaginative...though as a solo experience, I enjoyed the quicker pace of the Partner Party remixes more than the traditional versions. Soundstage presents a short-but-brilliant collection of excellent rhythm games. River Survival, while a bit repetitious, is a spectacular work of genius that all Mario fans should experience. Note that, in all modes, the NPC teammate AI is snappy and very capable.The main solo mode, Challenge Road, is well-designed, witty, replayable and very friendly toward casual players wishing to tackle it in several shorter sessions.
Tumblr media
Monty Mole shines with adorable spunk as a playable character, and this game has made him an overnight sensation with his hearbreaking-yet-hilarious reactions during the Whack-a-Mole minigame, Rhythm and Bruise.
Tumblr media
Every solo-player Mario fan, of course, needs to decide for themselves if they’ll get $60 of fun from Super Mario Party. As they say, your mileage may vary. There are a few negatives that you’ll have to overlook; mainly the (small) Toad’s Rec Room mode that requires two Switch consoles, and the (also small) online mode which is...well...garbage.
The rest of the game, however, shines with humor, imagination, and creativity. Speaking for my single-player self, I love Super Mario Party.
I’m pretty much at the edge of finally completing X-2!
Continuing where I left off from last time, I got into a rhythm minigame with Yuna and Rikku and... well... I did well and got a new Dressphere, but I have no idea what I was doing. I didn’t feel like I got any feedback. Anyway, after that, I started off at the Thunder Plains and followed after the Zalamander. While fighting enemies and exploring that little cave, I found a few interesting items. And when I fought the Zalamander, he... absolutely destroyed me...! Yuna and Rikku went down in a single hit while Paine went down in two. It was then that I realized I was underleveled against it, so I spent a bit of time grinding before trying again.
For the second attempt, I quickly got Yuna to use Floral Fallal as soon as possible. My reasoning was because Yuna gets Shield, which completely negates physical damage, as well as the party-wide Protect and party-wide heal. And it was... fairly one-sided. To me. And it went just as I planned, negating a lot of physical damage and healing whatever damage was dealt. And I even used Haste to attack more and having Yuna use Flare Whirl to good non-elemental damage.
After beating the Zalamander, I was rewarded with an FANTASTIC FMV cutscene! I heard it was beautiful and the rumors were right! I was so enthralled with everything happening; The Gullwings and audience suddenly being transported to a memory of Zanarkand, Lenne suddenly appearing and singing alongside Yuna, Shuyin and Lenne meeting up with each other and embracing each other before being gunned down, all of it was amazing, like an actual music video. And with that, Chapter 4 was finished.
At Chapter 5, instead of going straight into continuing the story, I instead just did a few things on the side, mainly going after special upgrades for the Special Dresspheres. First thing I did was go to Besaid upon hearing Lulu finally delivered the baby. After everything, including the little bit with Beclem, I remembered the Besaid sphere and after a bit of exploring and puzzle-solving, I found a new Dressphere and some more curatives, mainly ethers. After that, I went to Kilika to help out the people. Even took time to explore the temple and found some really good treasure!
After that, I went to the Mushroom Rock Road, getting somewhat curious about the tournament. However, I kinda misunderstood what I was supposed to do to enter, instead traveling all the way down the path with intent to go to the Youth League headquarters. And it was at the unavailable elevator that I found the Machina Booster and remembered the upgrades. After that, I went to Djose Temple and took on the Experiment for the first time. Despite being level 1, its damage caught me off guard, but I quickly recovered and used Full Throttle to take it out (because of the high damage, healing, and buffs), allowing me to emerge victorious. When I won, I went back into the temple to find more treasure and found a repair manual, giving it to the Al Bhed mechanist before leaving.
I then went and found the two upgrades for the Floral Fallal. Took me a while to find the one on Besaid, though. Once that was done, I went back to Djose to challenge the Experiment again, this time using Floral Fallal so I could get all the Break Limit upgrades instantly. After that, I went to Bevelle so I could see what treasures I could find in Bevelle’s Cloister and ended up finding the Via Infinito. I didn’t spend any time there (Just long enough to get the Crimson Sphere) and went to the aforementioned Cloister.
Once I was done exploring, I went to the Thunder Plains to take out the Rhyos fiends. They hit really hard, so I pretty much spammed Floral Fallal for the special abilities offered. It took a lot of time, but I managed to defeat them all... only to find myself up against Humbaba. Just like with the Rhyos, I used Floral Fallal to counteract his physical damage. And that worked, for a while. For a good amount of the battle, I had Yuna use Flare Whirl (but not before using Shield), the Left Pistilplay use various buffs (first Haste, then Shell, before finally focusing on healing), while the Right one simply attacked. But once Yuna had 74 MP remaining, I stopped and mainly used attack and Heat Whirl, keeping the MP in case a revive was needed. But for a good while, It was just attack, heal, attack. All I had to do was press X, all while I watched videos on my phone for a while. Towards the end (when he started getting low and re-applied Mighty Guard), I noticed that Humbaba was occasionally regenerating roughly 800 HP (I think, like, 857 HP) and he eventually took out a Pistilplay, causing me to use that Revive I had planned. But in the end, Yuna was KO’d.
At the earliest chance, I revived Yuna and had Paine use her Full Throttle Dressphere, taking advantage of the high damage. Paine would use Fiers for good, destructive damage, Sinistral Wings to use Sinistral Arts (started off with Pumice Feather for Haste and Diamond Feather for Defense before using nothing but Steel Feather after to increase Paine’s strength). Dextrial Wing just did... whatever. It didn’t take much longer before Humbaba fell. After that, I saved before exploring the New Cave. I also had the Charm Bangle active while hunting Rhyos and kept it on while exploring the New Cave. When I found Cid, I found myself in a boss battle against the Machina Panzer and its Watchers and they mopped the floor with me! I was just barely able to do anything before I got a game over.
When I respawned, I left and went back to the Mushroom Rock Road and took on the competition. They were all easy except for Elma and Lucil. In fact, I had to use Paine’s Full Throttle so I could deal reliable damage and not have to worry about Yuna, who was a White Mage, getting instantly KO’d. Once that was done and I got a TON of EXP and Gil, I decided to go to the Farplane, entering through the Besaid Temple, since it was where the journey started; Yuna’s Pilgrimage and her Sphere-Hunting, and even where Final Fantasy X itself properly began. So it made sense for the journey to end there as well.
Upon entering, I found myself in a battle against Shiva and... man! What happened to you, Shiva?! Who did this to you?! Well anyway, knowing that she was weak to Fire, I had Rikku and Paine switch to Warriors so they could use Flametongue, however, only the first one or two Flametongues hit and every other physical attacks missed. I nearly got a game over, but managed to revive Rikku and Yuna before having Yuna use Floral Fallal, using Heat Whirl to take her out. After that, I warped back to the Celsius. I also want to mention that I was unsure whether or not entering the Farplane would be the Point of No Return, planning on making a separate save file upon entering the Farplane if I was truly unable to return. Of course, that didn’t happen and I saved on the airship before turning off the console.
I’m really close to the end! Another day or two and I should be done with Final Fantasy X-2!
Throughout gaming history, each portable console has always a simple game with an addictive concept, based on the stacking bricks somehow. The Game Boys had Tetris, the Game Gear had Columns and the PlayStation Portable had Lumines in 2005. The latter’s success was such a hit, that it was quickly ported on different platforms, and is now being remastered thanks to Enhance Games studio. While the aim was to revive the puzzle game in 4K on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, I turned my eyes on the Nintendo Switch version, as it was done in a way to be fully compatible with HD vibrations to feel the rhythm and blocks. But after 13 years now, is it still worth it?
Explaining the concept of such a Lumines Remastered is quite short. There’s no storyline, no lore, just the pleasure of playing! With Lumines, in comparison to another famous block matching game like Tetris, all blocks have the same shape, mainly squares of 4 small bricks which can have up to two different colors. The only combination that will remove the stacked bricks from the playing area will be just a simple block of 4 bricks of the same color in a square. However, these square blocks can be cumulative, that is to say, that each brick can be part of both blocks. It’s obviously up to you to rack the big combos! In addition to the core gameplay, once one or more combinations are created, they will not be immediately deleted, and while waiting for that to happen, you can stack and accumulate bricks of the same color around it, thus increasing your future combo and try to get bonus points.
With the core concept explained, the main part that will incredibly impress you in Lumines is its mood. Everything has been worked on to be neat and minimalist, with several skins that are unlockable, each of them completely modifying the music genre, SFX sounds, game skin and even colors of the bricks. The music that is a big part of the mood of the game is a strange electro-techno mix, very pleasant, even for a traditional musician like me, and the new Shuffle Mode is neat, creating a sort of playlist that mixes all the skins together. Sound effects, on the other hand, are also worked in a way to fit perfectly to the music, embellishing the whole and make it varied, in a feat of auditory beauty.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
When it comes to Lumines Remastered game modes, there are several ones for you to play alone based on your preferences, ranging from challenge, puzzle, time attack and mission modes. The challenge mode has you simply reach the best possible score as a goal, while puzzles are 100 different test pushing to create specific shapes with the blocks. Then time attack has you score as high as you can in either 60, 180 or 300 seconds, and finally, missions are a 50 set challenges with precise objectives to finish, such as erasing a number of blocks in just 2 steps. For those of you that are more competitive, you can play against a friend on the same screen in a duel, or measure yourself to the CPU. Basically, whether for singleplayer use or with a friend, there is enough to play very long hours, especially when you can unlock new skins and avatars according to your performance, which opens up changes in the game as mentioned before.
On the technical front, Lumines was never a demanding title, so Lumines Remastered has also that incomparable fluidity of the original. Despite a lot of stuff going on the screen, everything works perfectly, even with the insane amount of light effects that accompany the destruction of squares, the background strobing to the beat, and your joy-cons vibrating to the tempo. On that front, I should encourage those that have extra Joy-cons to activate the “Trance Vibration”, to activate a vibration on all paired controller to the rhythm of the music, which can be an interesting experience once you got two in your pant’s pockets.
Lumines Remastered was reviewed using a Nintendo Switch digital download code of the game provided by Enhance. The game is also available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC via digital store releases. We don’t discuss review scores with publishers or developers prior to the review being published (click here for more information about our review policy).
If you own a Nintendo Switch or plan to get it soon, it would be unimaginable to not grab Lumines Remastered, unless Puzzle games are not your thing. Throughout gaming history, each portable console has always a simple game with an addictive concept, based on the stacking bricks somehow.
“…Jooheonie, I’m dying.”
This news made Jooheon jump, and a numb feeling overwhelmed him. Eyes snapping open as wide as they could go, he glanced over at Changkyun, sullen and sulking. “Dying? Who told you that?”
The younger boy chuckled, a low, mirthless sound that didn’t help Jooheon’s mood at all. “Well–no one, but Kihyun might as well have told me.” He sighed before continuing, “I have a tumor about the size of a tangerine in the back of my head. Though we don't know yet, he’s pretty sure that it’s malignant, given its placement and that it’s growing.”
A large part of the older ranger didn’t want to believe this was happening. Though he heard and understood, and his brow was already wrinkling in worry, he didn't yet grasp the depth of what Changkyun was saying. His mind was too busy trying to make something else out of it. “Malignant…that means cancer?”
Changkyun nodded sadly, kicking at the water below.
Jooheon’s felt his hope slip away, mind racing. It took all he had to not blubber too badly. “B–but, how? And you're so calm about it! You’re only twenty-one–why–why is this happening to you of all people?”
“Kihyun told me that I had the tumor before I joined the PPDC, perhaps even before that. It could have been benign at the earliest stages. But cancer cells started growing when I got exposed to radioactivity–”
“From Blind Rhythm’s nuclear core.”
“Exactly.”
Jooheon choked. Though he was holding it together on the outside, inside he was a mess, angry and sad and scared all at the same time. It was silly, but the thought flashed through his head that he was more terrified by this news than he was at the thought of fighting kaiju. He just didn’t think about the potential negative consequences of stepping into a Jaeger. Now his co-pilot and best friend was sick, potentially dying, not because of the monster but because of the warrior. “...Surgery?”
“Kihyun told me that it’s too close to my spinal column to operate on. Um, it’s also probably stage three or four at this point…too late to do anything about it now.”
"Well–I mean come on, there’s gotta be an option for chemotherapy, radiation, something, right? What did he say about that?”
Changkyun dropped his head in shame and turned away. “I–I told him that I didn’t want to do anything about it.”
A rush of red-hot anger coursed through Jooheon. Mainly, it was at himself. He should have made Changkyun go to the doctor before; seen the signs; spent more time with him. Of course, he was being stubborn, too, and that made the older boy worried and livid. “You refused treatment? Why did you do such a fucking stupid thing? You’d never run from a Kaiju, so why are you running from being sick?”
Changkyun cut into the conversation with as much intensity as he could muster amongst his pain. He was one of the few people who didn’t wilt at Jooheon’s scary demeanor. Many more important and more brave people did. “That’s just it, if I went ahead with treatment, I wouldn’t be able to do what I want to with the rest of my life.”
“And what might that be, smarty-pants? What could possibly be so important that you leave yourself in pain and shorten your life? Don't make stupid decisions, Changkyunie–”
Then the younger boy was pulling close, and a soft pair of lips pressed into Jooheon's, silencing him. It was a desperate gesture, almost like how a dry, parched man kissed water. Wrinkles appeared between Kyun's eyebrows as they knit together, and he pulled nervously on his hyung's sleeve. The moment seemed long, but almost as quickly as it happened, it ended. They both flushed deep red as they pulled away.
Jooheon came away with his system shocked into silence, and he sat there for a moment, flabbergasted and slack-jawed. So that was why he had always sensed deep love and adoration from Changkyun in the drift; before now, it wasn’t particularly obvious who it was for.  Eventually, the corners of his mouth tipped up. “Seriously?”
“W--well, yeah.” Changkyun dropped his gaze. “Forgive me. I’m sorry.”
“Wait, wait. Hold on a second. Don’t go apologizing yet.”
This time, Kyun was the one who glanced up to find lips waiting. They shared a brief kiss, outside hands finding each other, fingers weaving together.
“We can spend the rest of your life together.” Jooheon whispered at last, brushing his thumb down Changkyun’s palm. A smile engulfed the younger boy's face, the likes of which Jooheon hadn’t seen for many, many months. It made his heart flutter. “Just tell me why you don’t want more time.”
“Because–I want to keep fighting alongside you, too. I know that nothing makes you happier than being in Blind Rhythm, though those freaky kaiju are scary as shit. If I start treatment, I’ll be too weak. I’ve been managing pain fine. I can take it if it means I pilot a few more missions.”
For the second time that night, the older ranger was at a total loss for words. It felt selfish to want to keep pushing themselves into the fray, with this fresh knowledge of Changkyun’s condition. Yet, if that was what his best friend really desired, he wouldn’t argue. Kyun had to make his own choices, and Jooheon would respect them, whatever they were. Also, he was right. If everyone knew that he was being treated for cancer, no one would let him near the Jaeger. So, in the end, not knowing what else to do, Jooheon simply nodded and swallowed the lump in his throat.
Changkyun leaned his head against his best friend’s shoulder, a content sigh escaping his lips. “I love you, Jooheonie. If I would have known you felt the same way, I would have told you long ago. I really hope that this isn’t a dream.”
“You should kiss me again, then, and maybe we’ll find out.”
Shy, excited smiles spread across their faces, and Changkyun did. There, on the dock, the two relished in the taste of each other. Arms snaked around shoulders and waists. When they opened their eyes again, they were still close, under the moonlight. Jooheon pulled Changkyun into his lap, nuzzling into his best friend's neck. One hand on his hyung’s thigh, the other around his shoulders, the younger boy was content as well. For a while, they sat there tangled together, not speaking but always understanding.
Then Changkyun yawned. Of course Jooheon noticed and stroked his back. "Time to get you into bed, huh?”
At Kyun's sleepy nod, Jooheon carefully backed up from the edge of the dock and with a heave, picked them both up. Changkyun gave a gasp of surprise, tensing his hold on his co-pilot’s shoulders. Momentarily, Jooheon put him back on his feet.
While they were still there, close, fingers intertwined, Changkyun asked lowly: "Jooheonie, would you come to bed with me tonight? I’ve been having trouble sleeping, and I’d love your warmth."
"Whatever you'd like, my prince." Of course this made the younger boy blush.
Then they walked back to the compound, side by side. If anyone noticed them stealing swift, tender glances and smiling bashfully at each other, no one said anything.
Soon it was back in the familiarity of their shared room. As the door closed behind them, they were once more up in each other's arms. They felt like they had to make up for lost time, and yet both didn't want to rush anything. It was just slow making out for a while, until they parted to climb into pajamas. For Jooheon, that was simply shedding his shirt and shoes. Changkyun had some shorts and a tee shirt he preferred; both had been the elder's at one point. (Often, when Jooheon had clothing he didn't want anymore, Changkyun took it. Secretly, he liked wearing hand-me-downs. It made him feel closer to his hyung.)
Trying to fit into the small bottom bunk together was a mess. There were a lot of chuckles and more kisses before they found a comfortable spot. Changkyun was grateful that he was slightly smaller, since Jooheon's thickness took up a lot of room. In the end, the latter snuggled into the former's back, and they fell asleep, content. Pressed together closely, it was easy to forget about everything beyond their four walls. Also, that terrible diagnosis that weighed them down.
The next morning, Jooheon woke up to find himself the only one in bed, but not alone. Changkyun sat right by on the floor, back to the mattress, leaning up against the bedframe. Curious, the older ranger slid himself to the edge and watched him in silence.
A Game Boy Color lay at Kyunie's side, ported into his laptop via an adapter. It was his own personal console, but the game cartridge inside wasn't. With skilled, deft fingers he furiously typed out lengths of code. These were unintelligible to Jooheon's brain, but they clearly meant something to Changkyun. Every once in a while, the younger boy would go and check the game, and a texture or an event would change.
Changkyun concentrating had always been one of Jooheon's favorite things. There was the little scrunch between his eyebrows, which never failed to be cute. Another telltale sign was his mouth pressed flat into a line, which made his dimples appear prominently. If Jooheon hadn't known that it was not a good idea to interrupt him, he would have been planting kisses on those cheeks.
Finally Changkyun let out a long breath, setting aside the computer and stretching. Jooheon took that moment to run his hand through his boyfriend's locks. “Good morning, Kyunie.”
“Good morning.”
“You feeling alright?”
“No. Still waiting for the damn painkillers to kick in though. Should be any minute now.”
“I’m sorry, baby.” Jooheon frowned with worry, and wrapping his arms around Changkyun's neck, rubbed his chest. The small, soothing circles had the younger ranger's breathing slowing in no time. "Hm, what are you doing with that?" Jooheon asked, gesturing to the tech work.
"Reprogramming the cartridge. Hopefully after I'm done, the game will be better quality and a bit harder. The original is one of my big brother's favorites. It'll be a bit of a birthday present." Changkyun smiled, satisfied.
Of course it would be something for his family. Jooheon’s heart grew five sizes and yet started to ache. Sometimes he wished that he could be half the man his co-pilot was. Changkyun was a sensitive and thoughtful kid. He loved doing nice things for people, especially his family, whom he had always been close to, in particular his mother.
The older, taller ranger, on the other hand--the only one he had left was his dad, who he hadn't spoken to in years. They had a falling out right before Jooheon joined the military, and been in an extreme state of estrangement ever since. Jooheon considered his friends in the shatterdome to be his family, though. That was better than nothing, anyway, hey?
He almost didn't catch it when Changkyun said, under his breath, "Would it be too much to ask if we can visit my family before--before, you know--?"
Jooheon sighed at what he was implying. Before you die. “I don’t see why not. We’ll just have to request some time off.”
At this, the most precious grin grew on the younger ranger’s face. Weak for that bright smile, a matching one enveloped the older ranger's as well. Still stroking Changkyun's hair, Jooheon purred, “Kyunie, how about a date tonight, hmm? If you’re feeling up to it, of course.”
“What kind of date? It better not be like what Wonho put Kihyun through the other day.” The ibuprofen must be kicking in; Changkyun was regaining his usual, playfully snarky attitude. He craned his neck around to gaze at Jooheon.
“Oh, Gods. What did Hoseok do to that poor guy?”
“Took him to a build-your-own stuffed animal shop.”
“Hey--! That’s not too bad. Some of those places are kind of nice, and I think it’d be romantic to make one for your other and exchange them at the end--”
Changkyun smacked Jooheon on the arm. “This was the one downtown, the pink one. Kihyunie said that there were a million little girls in there when they were.”
“Oh. Well, I bet he enjoyed it more than he let on. Are those two actually dating yet?”
“In the doctor’s own words, ‘After that, I’m sticking to being his lover, not his boyfriend’.”
Ah, man. Jooheon chuckled and shook his head. “Well, you have nothing like that to fear from me. Right now I’m trying to decide where I should take you for dinner. What do you think? Does the Rio sound alright to you?”
“Of course.” The Rio was a wonderful restaurant, expensive but an incredible experience. You had to make a reservation as well as dress up in fancy suits and ties, but it was all worth it for the world class food and service.
“Then that’s what we’ll do.” Jooheon ruffled Changkyun’s hair again. “Ok, I need to hit the KWOON for a while. Better get up and around.” As he climbed out of bed, their lips brushed for a moment in a quick kiss before the older boy was off to the bathroom.
Later, after their day was over and everything had settled down, they headed out, hand in hand, dressed to the nines. Jooheon was in his best black silk suit and Changkyun in tweed. Upon first seeing each other like that, Jooheon’s jaw had slackened, eyes widening. An involuntary damn had escaped, too.
(“Do I look that good?” Changkyun had glanced up from his phone, smirking. Then he had proceeded to make a face so meme-worthy that Jooheon couldn’t help but break out into raucous laughter.
“Not anymore.” The older boy waited for Changkyun’s dimples to appear before he hooked an arm around his waist and wrapped him in a close hug. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Ah, I love you. And yes, you look that good.”)
For some reason, ever since he suggested the Rio that morning, Jooheon had become determined to make Changkyun feel a true prince for one night. It even happened that somehow, he had convinced Marshal Hyunwoo to lend him the Maserati. That in itself was a miracle, as the Marshal was normally very protective of his slick sports car. Jooheon had a feeling that the only reason he had agreed was because of Changkyun. Perhaps, also, the underlying urgency of the request.
Even for Jooheon, a thrill seeker, it took some time to get used to. So, he had taken it out for a street spin earlier in the day. The sheer power of the car was daunting at first. The older boy felt plain and out of place in the fancy set of wheels. He had to constantly remind himself to relax and resist the urge to speed and clam up at the low purr of the engine.
Now, as streetlamps flashed by, Jooheon couldn’t help but look over at Changkyun every once in a while. He really did seem like royalty tonight, legs crossed neatly over one another in the passenger’s seat. One hand draped lazily over the console, while the other propped his chin up as he stared out the window. Besides his sharp suit, he had parted and styled up his hair a little, which truly was a beautiful sight. Jooheon kept feeling flashes of pride at having him all to himself.
The Rio was a fancier affair than anything they had ever done together. Jooheon felt out of place. He was honestly more of a burger and pizza joint or street Jajangmyeon vendor guy, himself. Changkyun seemed comfortable, however, so the older boy did his best to seem at ease as well. A valet was waiting to take the car as they stepped out, and Jooheon hesitantly handed over the keys. He probably had nothing to fear, but if something happened to the high-dollar vehicle, Hyunwoo would have his ass.
He went to meet Changkyun, who was waiting on the other side of the car, and together they wandered inside. It was hard, but they knew they needed to resist the urge to hold hands, at least for now. They still had a public image to maintain, even if they didn’t have much time. Jooheon flashed his ID to the person at the counter to prove that he really was who he said. Then the waiter led them over to a private booth (one of the many perks of being a protector of the city) and took their order.
Once he had left, Jooheon reached across the table and took Changkyun’s hand, lacing their fingers together. He was really trying not to think of anything except the evening, and how good Changkyun looked in his suit. Honestly, it was harder than he figured it would be. He found a question slipping out of his mouth that he had intended to ask later, but that somehow had overtaken him.
“Baby, I hate to potentially spoil a worry free night, but I was wondering. Do you have anything that you absolutely have to do or experience before the cancer claims you? Other than visit your family, that is?”
“Jooheon--no night from here until the end is going to be worry free.”
The older boy’s eyebrows knit together in determination. “Well, I’m going to try as hard as I can. If I had the whole world, I’d give it all away so that I could see you happy for a moment of time.”
Changkyun’s face fell, and he nodded curtly. “You have no idea how much that means to me.” His lungs filled with a single, deep breath. When he rubbed his eye, the side of his hand got coated with wet, which he quickly wiped on his pant leg. “As for my bucket list, um--I haven’t really thought of anything yet. But I’ll think about it, ok?”
“Of course. Just say the word, and I can get it arranged.”
“For both of us?”
“If at all possible.” Jooheon smiled and rubbed his thumb gently across Changkyun’s knuckles, then brought it up to his lips to give it a kiss. The corners of the younger boy’s mouth tipped up at this, and he glowed, shy again suddenly. He rested his head in his folded palm, eyes trained on a painting above their heads. That faraway look he had in the car earlier clouded his eyes.
A moment of silence passed. Then, unexpectedly, Changkyun brightened, gaze snapping back to Jooheon’s. The older ranger almost instantly knew that he was in trouble as the most mischievous smile crossed his boyfriend's face. “Hey, what if I wanted find out once and for all if H.One and the Marshal are in cahoots?”
Not this again. Was he always going to bring it up? Seriously, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Jooheon guffawed and leaned back in the chair. Yes, 514-H and the Marshal’s strange schedule were vastly interesting. It didn’t mean that he was hiding something as big as romancing a wanted criminal, though. “You know that I borrowed Hyunwoo’s Maserati, right?”
“Really? I totally thought that you had your own.” Kyunie rolled his eyes. “Yes, I am perfectly aware.”
“I've already spent my favors. How would I ask him something like that anyway? Just casually hand him his keys back and be like, ‘Oh yeah, Marshal, Changkyun wants to know if you’ve ever fucked the most wanted man in South Korea.’ Um, no. You’re the one who desperately wants to know, ask him yourself.”
Changkyun’s bottom lip poked out. He was good at using his still slightly wet eyes to his advantage. “Jooheonie, but--I’m a wittle baby, waah--”
“Jesus Christ, you can still pilot a Jaeger. Asking a simple question is not out of your capabilities either.” Jooheon went to shoot Changkyun a snide look across the table. However, he abruptly froze at the playful smile that greeted him. “--what?”
“You’re so handsome when you’re annoyed.” The younger boy's eyes flashed with lust. From the moment he saw it, Jooheon knew that it was a dangerous gaze. Butterflies exploded in his stomach, and he had to fight back a blush. Slowly, another familiar feeling took over, as well--his own desire. Keeping his composure was hard now, as his resolve and self control melted fast.
“You’re just saying that to get me to ask for you.”
“Nope. I’m serious. I like seeing your face when you’ve had enough of me and my supposed H.woo bullshit.”
The fuck? Where had the kind, caring boyfriend of just a few seconds ago gone? More than that, what was up with this ugly conversation? “Did--did you just give them a couple name?”
“Not just. They had one a long time ago, actually. Isn’t it cute? H.woo?”
“No, not at all. Changkyun, you’re always coming up with these things, and it’s so stupid, yeah it’s bullshit. You totally don’t get it.”
With every frustrated word that flew from Jooheon’s mouth, Changkyun’s eyes were getting darker. It was infuriating to no end--but also a huge turn-on. "Fuck.” his already-low voice had somehow dropped three octaves. “You’re so hot.”
Five minutes later, the waiter came back, food in hand, to find a twenty-five dollar tip and an empty table.
Changkyun practically pulled them through the front doors of the restaurant and up the ramp to the parking garage. Jooheon could barely keep up, and it didn't help that he was suddenly weak in the knees. Somehow, he managed to muscle his way past to claim the keys to the Maserati. The valet didn't question or act disappointed in their all-too-brief stay. He simply started to lead them toward where he had parked the car.
They were just at the bottom of the stairs, through the doorway to the lowest, premium parking level, when Changkyun grinned and swung around suddenly. Right there, in public, feet behind the clueless valet--he grabbed Jooheon by the shirt collar and pulled him in for a hungry kiss. That wasn't all, though, because he also unashamedly groped him. Jooheon was helpless against the moan that left his mouth. The flush pink of Changkyun’s lips stopped it for the most part.
“Hm, I suspected, baby,” Changkyun murmured hotly into his ear and pressed their hips together. The older ranger felt something against his thigh. “Don’t worry. I’m just as hard as you are.”
“Fuck--Kyunie--” But Changkyun was moving on, catching up to the valet.
Then Jooheon saw a flash of silver and black, and his eyes snapped open when he realized what had just also happened: Changkyun had stolen the keys to the car out of his pants pocket. Incredulity ripped through him. Really, where had this side come from? He hadn’t seen it before, even when Kyun was drunk. Jooheon wouldn’t easily admit it, but he found it to be kind of refreshing.
Not like the younger boy wasn’t right. He was already whipped and dripping for him.
“I told Hyunwoo that I’d drive!” Jooheon tried to protest as he caught up.
“Well he doesn’t have to know, now does he?” The look Changkyun gave him made it dangerously clear that argue any more would be futile. So, admitting defeat for the moment, Jooheon walked to the passenger’s seat of the sports car and slid in. As soon as Changkyun closed his door, the Maserati roared to life, and he threw the shift into reverse. The valet barely had time to get out of the way before the car peeled out of the lot.
The younger boy was a good driver, though reckless. This powerful ride was a treat he had no doubt wanted to experience. At the rate they were going, and how they swung around corners at crazy speeds, honestly it was a miracle they didn't see any cops. Halfway through the ride Jooheon realized that they definitely weren’t heading in the direction of base. “Kyun--”
Cue another wilt-inducing, dangerous glance. They had been in each other’s heads enough for the older boy to know what it meant: don't question me, I know what I'm doing.
Finally Changkyun took a turn-off. A few more twisting streets later, they arrived at what the older ranger could only guess was their destination. It was a small but quaint motel, with paint fading off the shutters to the rooms and a roof that needed re-shingling. Some cars sat in the lot, but for the most part everything was quiet and empty. Jooheon shot Changkyun an inquisitive glance, but he didn’t answer, of course. Almost immediately, Kyun headed for the parking spot in front of door number twenty-six, on the end of the row.
At this point, they didn’t give a single fuck if anyone was watching in the dim glow of the moon. So, as soon as they were out of the Maserati and could make physical contact, they were all over each other. Changkyun pulled them to the door to the room and took a key out of his pocket. Fiddling with the knob, soon he had it open and they were falling into the dark room. The door barely had a chance to close behind them before their shoes were off, and lips locked together. Tongues danced and curled without hesitation. They were both already so needy, and it drove them on.
Now the power balance shifted, and Jooheon’s dominant side came full force to the surface. He could feel the tingles of expectation run down the younger boy's spine as he pressed him against the wall by the doorframe. Mercilessly, Jooheon bucked his hips up into him. “You think you can get away with being a pain in the ass tonight, huh? Telling me I’m sexy when I’m pissed off at you? Teasing me in front of that poor valet, stealing the keys to the car?” His mouth roamed from Changkyun’s lips, to his jaw and neck, sucking hickeys in the younger’s tender skin.
“I--I’m sorry,” Kyun gasped, involuntarily squeezing Jooheon closer. “I’ve been half-hard for you all night. I wasn’t sure h--how much longer I’d be able to keep my hands off--in the Rio--fuck, you’re so hot when you’re angry.” The older boy felt trembling but soft hands slide his suit coat off, and fumble with the buttons on his shirt. If this had been anyone else, he might have stopped Changkyun, and been a bit more domineering. However, he had a soft spot in his heart for his boyfriend, and so allowed it. He even flexed his shoulders to help get rid of the uncomfortable, starched cotton top once and for all.
Then Changkyun's wandering fingers were all over, exploring Jooheon's well-knit, muscular torso. Goosebumps rose in their wake. Almost without realizing it, the older ranger compensated by pushing his tongue deeper in his best friend’s mouth. The attention made the flame in his breast burn hotter. Within minutes, Changkyun was in the same state, half-naked and vulnerable.
Jooheon carried him tenderly over to the king bed, laying him down and straddling him. Changkyun placed a hand on his boyfriend's abs, but Jooheon grabbed his wrist before he could do anything else. More specifically, undo the button of his dress pants.
But, with his other hand, the older boy undid Changkyun's belt and popped the clasp of his trousers. Kissing down the length of his body, he hooked his fingers in the waistband of his underwear and smoothly pulled the cloth clean off.
It wasn’t like they hadn’t seen each other naked before, but Jooheon was always taken aback by the size of his co-pilot’s cock. It was especially impressive now as it sprung up, red, hard, and leaking. Jooheon took the needy length in his hand with a little grin of victory. Using his thumb to collect and slick down precum, he started to pump. One glance back up told him everything he needed to know. Changkyun’s adam’s apple bobbed, head thrown back.
“Damn, I don’t even have to have you in my mouth to get you to come undone.”
“Ah--but please, w--would you do it?” Changkyun managed to gasp. “God, do you have any idea how many times I’ve dreamed about having those pretty lips of yours wrapped around my cock?”
“Wow. You’re naughtier than I thought.” Jooheon smirked and slowed down, but honestly it took all he had. His mouth was already starting to water and God, his dick--he was so hard, too.
“Don’t--” Changkyun started to complain, but the older ranger cut him off with a tut.
“Now now, patience is a virtue, hm?” With that, he let Changkyun’s hard length flop against his belly, and crawled back up to kiss him again. Guiding the younger boy’s hands down, he allowed him to undress him the rest of the way. This left both nearly naked in front of each other.
Jooheon’s manhood wasn’t quite as long as his boyfriend’s, but had similar girth, perhaps even more. Changkyun took hold, and Jooheon bucked into his hand, doing most of the work himself. “Fuck, Changkyun, you’re sin.”
“And you--ah--you make me go crazy.”
They remained there for a long while, Kyun thrusting into the air too, by second nature, as he helped his best friend get off. Little, sloppy pools of warm precum formed on the younger’s belly, as his own mingled with Jooheon’s. By now their lips were swollen from so many kisses, and red and purple hickeys lined their necks. Jooheon was enjoying his boyfriend’s touch so much that for a while he forgot about everything else.
But then Changkyun asked hesitantly, “Baby--when can I have that blowjob--? You never told me no.”
“I'll give it to you now, if you’ll let me dictate what happens after that.” Changkyun nodded vigorously. Jooheon remembered his confession earlier and shivered with anticipation. “Ok, edge of the bed then.”
They both immediately switched position. Jooheon crawled down onto his knees, on the floor, and Changkyun obeyed the older boy's wishes, legs hanging off the mattress. This let Jooheon have access to Kyun’s cock without much strain. Somehow, his length was even more red and angry than before.
“I’m sorry, baby, let me take care of that.” Jooheon drew the saliva in his mouth onto his tongue. Taking Changkyun in hand he gave him a nice, wet lick up the front side, following the main vein, balls to tip. The younger boy shuddered in pleasure, hands gripping the bedsheets as Jooheon pumped a couple times, to spread the moisture around, and finally took him in his mouth.
“Fuuck,” Changkyun groaned, goosebumps breaking out on his skin. That low voice had always made Jooheon weak, and now it was especially deep. When he glanced up, he found that Kyun was watching him with a dark light in his eyes, and that he was biting his lip. One of his hands came down to bury itself in Jooheon’s hair.
Jooheon had to forcibly restrain Changkyun from humping his mouth as he bobbed up and down. It was enough as it was to try to get more in without the help of Changkyun's hips. Like a true pro, the older boy stroked the vein and tip with his tongue on every pass. Soon enough Changkyun was a panting mess, beads of sweat slicking his hair and feeling like he was about to explode. “J--Jooheonie--”
With a final twist of his hips, Changkyun was cumming. The force finally overpowered Jooheon’s grip. At the moment's notice, somehow Jooheon managed to relax. The whole of the younger's length pushed into his mouth. Sticky, salty white semen flowed down his throat. He might have flinched, but he didn't pull away. The feeling of his swallowing sent shivers back through Changkyun's body.
Finally, when Jooheon couldn’t take the burning lack of oxygen anymore and his boyfriend seemed to be out of cum, he pulled off, lips parting from Changkyun’s tip with a lewd, wet pop.
But Jooheon was still hard, and Changkyun had promised him that he could call the shots now. He got up, growling, unfazed by Changkyun’s fresh load in his stomach. Out of his pants, which were still around his knees, Jooheon pulled lube and a condom. Then he shed them the rest of the way. For a moment, Changkyun stared at this new development.
“What did I say earlier? Yours off, too.” At this, Changkyun scrambled to push the fabric off his body. “Hands and knees, dirty boy.” Jooheon popped open the top of the small tube and coated his fingers, then climbed back up beside his boyfriend.
Changkyun once again obeyed without hesitation, spreading his legs a little and lifting his ass into the air. As soon as Jooheon touched the cold, slick gel to the rim of his anus, the younger boy inhaled sharply. Then Jooheon stuck a digit in, pushing the lube deeper and dipping in and out. “That feels good, huh?” Despite the older boy’s forceful attitude, the question was thinly veiled care. If Changkyun gave any hint that he was uncomfortable, they would stop.
“Y--yes.”
Adding another digit and giving Changkyun a minute to adjust, Jooheon decided that it was ok to put in his ring finger too. Changkyun shuddered underneath him. Jooheon brushed his prostate once, and that made him fist his hands in the sheets again.
Not too long after that, the older boy murmured, “Ready, baby?”
Changkyun nodded.
Tearing open the condom, Jooheon rolled it on and hoped that his murmured advice would be enough. “Ok. Just relax.” Then he pushed his dick in, slowly, all the while rubbing Changkyun’s hipbones with his hands. “That’s it. Perfect.” Changkyun hummed and sighed at the feeling of his hyung filling him up. Jooheon started to move, and sloppy moans fell from his mouth.
Changkyun swore, gasping. “Babe, I’m so hard again.”
The older boy took great pleasure in that he was wrecking his boyfriend for the second time tonight. “Ah yeah? Then touch yourself for me, dirty boy.”
Shifting his weight as best he could, Changkyun leaned on one side and reaching his newly-freed hand back to tug at his cock. Jooheon was still pounding into his ass, roughly now. The younger boy was so tight around him.
It didn't take long until Jooheon was struggling to hold back an orgasm. “Kyunie, I’m so close...”
“Give it to me.” The beg pierced through the rush of blood in Jooheon’s ears and the sound of their skin slapping together. Changkyun was rutting his hips into his lover now. It was as if he sensed that Jooheon needed help keeping the desperate pace. “Give me all your cum.”
Jooheon’s vision tunneled, then snapped into full scope again. Pleasure ripped through his body like a tidal wave. His dick pulsed against Changkyun’s insides, and he couldn't help but shoot his entire load into the condom. Finally he was falling forward onto his boyfriend's back. Both were panting heavily, spent.
Tiredness overwhelmed them after all that, but Changkyun whined softly. Jooheon couldn't ignore it; he had to finish this--or rather, finish Kyun off. So, the elder ranger summoned his remaining strength. After carefully pulling out and sitting up, he hooked an arm around Changkyun’s waist, bringing him flush to himself. Jooheon left light, dusting kisses along his neck and behind his ear, and reached around with his other hand to help jack him off.
Changkyun fell limp, eyes fluttering shut. Meanwhile, Jooheon murmured sweet nothings in his ear. “You’re so sexy, baby. It makes me proud that you’re all mine.” A small smile grew on the younger boy’s face. “I want you like this so many more times.”
“Me, too.” They met in an open-mouthed, wet, sloppy kiss.
Jooheon could tell when his boyfriend was close, which he was again. “Get your hand up there, Changkyunie.”
The younger sighed at the gentle reminder, and cupped his tip with his right hand. Seconds later, he was spilling there, orgasm touching him again, moans falling out of his mouth. Jooheon’s slow pumps coaxed all the white frothy cum out of him. A few drops fell onto the comforter, settling there on the surface.
Both pilots sat there for a moment, trying to calm their breathing and simply enjoying the lingering warmth. At long last, Changkyun crawled forward, careful not to tip his palm too much. There was a box of tissues sitting on the nightstand, and he grabbed a couple to wipe his hand. Once he had gotten everything, including what had slipped between his fingers, he turned his attention to the bed, mopping up the mess they had made there as well.
Jooheon pulled off the full condom still on his length. In only a few seconds he tied it off and deposited it in a convenient trash can. “If you want, you can shower first, Kyunie.”
The younger boy nodded. “Ok.” They stopped one more time to kiss briefly. Then Changkyun disappeared through the doorway to the bathroom.
Ah, man, this is the dream, Jooheon thought as he got up to wander around the room. He pulled on his briefs before gathering the rest of their clothes, too, folding them as best as he knew how and placing them on the dresser by the TV. Then it was back to the bed, on his back, drumming his fingers on his stomach and listening to the shower run.
One that isn’t going to last.
Immediately, he rebuked the thought. Bullshit. I have the opportunity to spend as much time as possible with him now. Changkyun... the younger boy found solace in his co-pilot, considering him to be a rock amongst the ever-shifting tides of the world. He really wants to be with me, physically, sexually--mentally. That’s the part of it that’s the dream.
It was in that moment that a revelation came over Jooheon. He had been so caught up in asking Changkyun about last wishes and desires, that he hadn’t even thought about his own. Really, the only thing Jooheon wanted was to fight the Kaiju until their end with Changkyun at his side.
Suddenly, he burned with the desire to make that a reality.
Soon enough Changkyun came out with a towel wrapped around his waist. He was grinning in that cute, mischievous way again, and he didn't hesitate to start teasing his hyung. “Man, you should see it in there. Whoever stays here keeps it fully stocked. There’s three kinds of shampoo in the shower, ibuprofen, even toothbrushes and toothpaste. Maybe if you brush your teeth before you come to bed, your breath won’t reek so bad.”
“Shut up, you know that’s your fault,” Banter game strong as ever, Jooheon jabbed back at him playfully and laughed. “but wait, if you don’t know who uses the room, how did you come across this place?”
"I dunno.” Giving a shrug, the younger boy went over to his pile of clothes and grabbed his boxers. Jooheon trailed his gaze over his boyfriend’s body as he hopped into them. “I found a key on the floor one time, and it looked interesting, so I picked it up. Tried it on doors in the Shatterdome. Didn’t work. So I gave it to a buddy of mine, and he did a little digging. Turns out it was to this room. I can’t explain why or how. I thought I’d keep it just in case I needed it, and look at this. We did.”
“That’s weird. A good find, but weird.” Giving a sigh, the older ranger flexed his shoulders. “So, are you done in there?”
“Yeah.”
The hot water felt so nice against Jooheon’s skin. In choosing a shampoo, it intrigued him that the three bottles were so different. The one he went ahead and used had a manly, musky scent, closest to the one he used every day. For some reason, it made him think of the Marshal, too. The other two were light and cottony and fruity and zesty, respectively; the latter also reminded him of someone, but he couldn’t put a finger on it. Jooheon did his best to swirl the extra suds over his body, since there seemed to be no wash in there. Changkyun was right about it being well-stocked, it seemed, except for that.When he was out of the shower, Jooheon decided to take Kyun's advice and brush his teeth. Thank goodness that there was a brush still in the package on top of the mirror. Then he pulled his underwear back on and went to rejoin his boyfriend.
Changkyun wasn't wearing his suit, much to Jooheon's surprise. He looked pretty comfortable in a random pair of jeans and dark tee shirt, busily tapping away on his phone. There was also a set of clothes on the bed next to him. Changkyun gave him a smile as he approached, and patted the jeans and shirt by his side. “So, I was looking through the drawers in here. Just so happens that like in the shower, three people have clothes. One is my size, one is yours, and the third person must be someone tall and lanky.”
Jooheon’s eyebrows went up, and he let out a hum, checking the tag on the jeans. Yes, they were a perfect fit. Changkyun knew him all too well.
“There’s also like, fifteen boxes of condoms and at least ten tubes of lube stashed around here too. And then some sex toys I’ve never even dreamed of before. I wonder what this place is anyway. A love cave?”
“I don't think I'm surprised,” Jooheon said half-absentmindedly as he slid into the outfit and hopped onto the bed next to his boyfriend. “I wonder who though? It’s someone who works at the Shatterdome.”
“Well, of course. But that’s all we have.”
“What was the general location of the key?”
“Well--” Changkyun scratched his chin. “It was kind of in the general vicinity of LOCCENT? I was walking between the bunks and there when I saw it.”
“Weird.”
Conversation died down after that; both pilots were content to hold each other in the darkness, smiling and sighing, a few kisses placed here and there.
And then Changkyun’s stomach grumbled.
It dawned on the older boy that neither of them had touched food since lunch (swallowing Changkyun’s cock and cum did not count), and he sucked in a breath. “Oh my God, we didn’t actually eat at the Rio, did we?”
“Nope, we were a little too eager to get around to something else, I think.” Kyun chuckled.
“You must be starving.”
“There’s a 24-hour burger joint down the street. I’ve heard it’s pretty good. Wanna swing by? On foot, maybe?”
“Sure. Why not?”
As soon as they had slid back into socks and shoes, Jooheon grabbed his wallet, and Changkyun made sure he had his key, they were wandering out into the night.
Fifteen minutes later, they were sitting at a retro style two-person booth, chowing down on chocolate shakes, thick beef patties on pretzel buns, and some of the best sweet potato fries they swore they had ever had. (At the same time, everything tasted better after sex.)
Jooheon couldn’t stop staring at his boyfriend and co-pilot, thoughts from earlier at the forefront of his mind again. He needed a plan, and support for it. Talking was one of his strong suits, so he wasn’t so worried about the latter. However, he had absolutely no idea about the former. How did one even go about approaching the rift to the Kaiju's world? Would dropping a bomb down it work? Probably not, nothing was that simple. Besides, hadn’t the Pan-Pacific Nations tried that before? If he remembered right, it bounced back and detonated underwater, not even touching the breach. Why? It was almost like--the only things allowed through it were the monsters...
Wait. What if that was the case? It certainly made sense. Now how in the heck would they manage to disguise something, whether Jaeger or bomb, as a Kaiju--?
“...Baby?” Jooheon snapped out of his reverie to find Changkyun’s dark eyes on him. “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing.” Waving it off, the older boy threw a couple fries in his mouth and sighed, guilty that he had let his mind wander. “I’m sorry that this date hasn’t been quite what we planned.”
“That’s a stupid reason to apologize.” Changkyun reached across the booth and took Jooheon’s hand, rubbing his calloused fingers. “First of all, it’s not solely your fault at all. We’re here because we wanted to be here. If anything, it’s my fault that I--you know, took control.” Of course they weren’t going to speak of it directly; there were others here who could be listening in. “I couldn’t dream of a more perfect date with you. We’ve known each other for so long, been in each other’s heads, and still this is all so new and exciting. I don’t think it’s going to fade for me, either. You make me the happiest, proudest person in the world, Jooheonie.”
A gentle smile spread across Jooheon’s face. “Thank you, Kkungie.”
Once their bellies were full and they had paid, it was back to the motel. They were asleep almost from the moment they crawled under the sheets of the king bed and hit the pillows. Or, at least, Changkyun was. Jooheon wrapped his arms around the younger boy protectively, tangling their legs together, kissing his forehead softly after their murmurs of goodnight.
Jooheon wouldn’t have known it was morning except for the sliver of light that peeked in through the tiny gap in the curtains. He didn't even have noise from outside to let him know a new day was starting. As he laid there and pulled himself together, the events of the night before were fresh on his mind. He also had Changkyun’s head on his chest and hand on his abs to sooth his soul. Though he was barely awake enough to think, with a little smile, he reached over to gently run his hand through the younger boy’s hair. An overwhelming rush of love enveloped him. My Prince. My Baby.
He was content to lay there for a while, measuring out his breaths so that he didn’t wake Kyunie. The gears in his head began to work more efficiently, and the usual wave of aftershock fatigue hit. Jooheon's eyes fluttered shut; they didn't have to get up now. It was fine. No one back at the shatterdome probably even realized that they were still gone. They could stay as long as they wanted. All the better if Changkyun stayed asleep for a couple more hours. Then he'd recharge his energy as much as possible, before he inevitably woke up with one of those blinding headaches.
Jooheon still couldn't believe the news. It felt like it had been weeks since he had learned, but it was only two nights ago. Kkungie had cancer, and his selfish ass had refused to treat it so that he could live the rest of his life hard and fast.
Almost as if he knew Jooheon had been thinking about him, Changkyun stirred and sighed. His breathing picked up a bit as he woke. Before he had even opened his eyes, he rumbled breathily: “Jooheonie?”
“Yes, baby?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Thank you for everything.”
“Of course. You still remember when I said I’d be your best friend until the end, in Air Force basic, right? Nothing’s changed.”
Jooheon could feel cheeks bunch against his breast. The corners of his mouth tipped up. He imagined an incredibly sloppy-haired twenty-one year old’s small lips widening into a signature, gigantic smile.
Neither moved for another long minute, yet. They both wanted this captured forever. Nothing could touch them here. It was a moment without distracting noise or unnecessary movement, without the Kaiju out to destroy humankind and the younger boy’s tumor pressing mercilessly into the back of his skull. Not even the ominous fear of death that had both rangers in its grasp could ruin the content moment.
But the ugly, ugly truth was that life had to go on. They walked a fated path, barreling toward some end or another.
Changkyun shifted, pushing himself up and off. Jooheon almost immediately missed his warmth, which was enough of a motivation for him to get up, too. Moving to the edge of the bed, he rubbed his eyes and asked. “Do you think the tenants will mind if we use their stuff in the bathroom again?”
“If they even realize that we’ve been here.” The younger boy was changing back into his rumpled, messy suit, that somehow still made him look good.
“Oh, they will. Do you think room service cleans their clothes for them?”
“Considering that this seems to be a well-kept private love cave, probably yes.” Changkyun had a point. Some very rich people must stay here, if they had a room in a legitimate motel all to themselves, constantly.
Jooheon finally made himself stand up. He headed for the bathroom, pulling a hairbrush through his hair quick. The dash of hairspray he had applied the night before to hold his hair back away from his forehead was still kind of working. He dealt with it as best he could.
As Jooheon slipped past and traded spots with Changkyun in front of the mirror, they shared their first kiss of the day. It hurt the older ranger deeply to know that he only had so many left. Soon he, too, had changed into his suit, and figured with a little cleaning, they would be ready to go back to base.
Tap tap tap.
Both Jooheon and Changkyun turned to look at each other at the firm knock, clearly on their door.
Probably room service, Kyun mouthed and shrugged.
The other boy didn’t believe it though, and shook his head. Something was off. No, they would have said so. He crept to the door, narrowing one eye to glance through the peephole. Changkyun was right behind him, just as curious.
Jooheon inhaled sharply. There, beyond, stood a tall, slender man. He was unmistakeable in appearance. A frown graced his plush lips; the rangers had seen his handsome features in countless mugshots.
H.One.
Holy Shit, Jooheon thought to himself. We’re gonna die.
Castle Point Anime Convention Wrap-Up!
Tumblr media
Castle Point Anime Convention is in the books! It surely indeed was one for the books as well, coming from someone who has not attended Castle Point in literal years. Try...2012 to be exact. Seven years passes by so flipping fast. To think, the last time I was at this convention was back when I was a mere nineteen year old! Regardless, time flies and as we get older and we evolve, so too must our conventions that we attend. If conventions do not improve of evolve, then they will never last for the long term. Rather dire things to say for an opening to a wrap-up post, but it’s how I personally feel on the matter. It’s a challenge for grassroots conventions to pull it off, but for those who do, the payoffs are grand. In Castle Point’s case, they have pulled it off. They have evolved greatly from the small yet modest “college con” that I recall attending way back when.
As such, to end this foreword, I’ll be making some comparisons to the last time I attended CPAC back in 2012, to now, throughout this article. It’s going to be quite a lengthy read, so strap in everyone!
The Meadowlands Expo venue was simple to arrive with no issues on our end. A simple fifteen-minute-at-best-half-hour-at-worse-due-to-traffic bus ride from Port Authority was all that was needed to arrive. The bus stop even lets you off directly in front of the convention center itself! Here is where I can immediately talk about how helpful the staff was towards myself and the rest of the podcast. When we needed help as far as knowing where to go and con assistance in general, everyone was able to help, but, there weren’t any crowding that I noticed as well. Lines were handled well, and the Dealer’s Room/Artist Alley, places where there’s known to be a packed pandemonium, was handled well. Mainly this was due in part to there being a designated entrance and a designated exit. Take notes future cons!
youtube
As the time drew nearer for the gates to be open, the hall slowly but surely filled itself with various cosplayers, attendees wearing gaming and anime inspired apparel, and soon enough the events began.
One of the first events was a maid performance, made to kick off the opening of the anime convention. It certainly had set the tone for the convention for sure, where one could hear it in ambiance even if they weren’t there to physically attend.
After the opening ceremonies concluded, I was left to explore the event as it were. One of the first stops I take in any convention is within the game room, so to speak. Majority of the games featured, due in part from the Snow Phoenix team, in the game room below are games in which I have played at least once, play on a regular at the local arcade, or games in which I never had played before (Or ever will play outside of cons)
Regardless of which category the games fell under, it’s always fun to go back to these games from time to time. Free play is just a bonus in all honesty. My personal favorite of the games featured here had to have been Sound Voltex, always a fine game in my book. The second being Crossbeats, a touch based rhythm game which, sadly, development ceased as of last year. It’s still a great game to go back to from time to time.
youtube
Another portion of the game room were console setups. These had a slew of fighting games ranging from the Street Fighter Collection to Mortal Kombat 11, Soul Calibur 6 to Tekken 7, and of course an entire section of CRT televisions dedicated to Melee. Tournaments were held throughout the weekend, which, unfortunately I didn’t make it as far as I would have liked. However, those who I had met were friendly enough to me.
Back on the topic of rhythm games, I had attended a rhythm game panel that was being presented later on that afternoon. The convention was split into two venues. The main venue, at the Meadowlands Expo, had the main events while the Holiday Inn had the extra panels. This was where the Rhythm Game panel was held.
Held by RhythmCore Gaming, the rhythm game panel spoke about the history of rhythm games, mainly focusing on Bemani games, as well as touching upon mobile rhythm games briefly as well. For those reading who aren’t aware of what a “Bemani” is, essentially it’s the rhythm game division of Konami. Familiar titles include Dance Dance Revolution, Beatmania IIDX, Sound Voltex, Pop’n Music, and so much more.
Tumblr media
All in all, as far as presentation, it was a well run panel. From a technical standpoint, the Castle Point staff made sure all equipment that were in use were running well, as far as projectors for example. Crowd control was also handled quite well, to avoid overflow. From the panelist’s standpoint, I feel they had gotten the gist of what each game is and how they play. Being slightly critical, I feel some of those who were assigned to talk about a specific game went more in depth with their game than others, but I know more than anyone the challenge of running a rhythm game panel.
See, way back in 2013, I, too, ran a rhythm game panel at a convention that has long since been discontinued. A good friend of mine and I both ran the panel, yet, with technical difficulties due to the inability of the staff to assist us, as well as not informing the panel ahead of us that we were running late due to the technical difficulties, the experience gave me more of a headache than I’d like to admit.
Tumblr media
An awesome ass couple cosplay that, sadly, did not have any social media :( I still dug it!
However, this is where I can once again praise the Castle Point staff for being on top of making sure the panel ran smoothly. I can also give respect to the RhythmCore Gaming group for tackling on a subject to appeal to a crowd that may look at an arcade rhythm game in fear and confusion. I suppose I admit I attended this panel to see how others would tackle such a topic. I give the panel a “Certified Nay’s Thumb Up.”
For the rest of the convention, I had made sure to try to get my fill in of taking pictures of as many cosplayers as I found whom caught my eye, all of whom you’ll see throughout this post. One in particular who caught my eye was a Kasumi cosplayer.
Tumblr media
Kasumi from Persona 5 Royale by ZodiacKind
See, again, for the reader who may not know this about me. I am a huge Persona fan. When I had heard news that Persona 5 Royale was a thing and I had saw the trailer earlier that same week, I was hoping that the cosplay community would work fast.
The cosplay community would not disappoint me.
This cosplayer deserves special mention just for having this at the ready so quickly, so, for that I appreciate this so much!
Another cosplayer who I felt deserved an honorable mention was a woman who was a very good Sub-Zero, but also earlier that weekend she was Kratos. I had the chance to interview her as Sub-Zero in which the video can be found below.
Tumblr media
Sub-Zero by Amarys Berry
I mentioned in my previous post about Winter Brawl that vendors are the underappreciated glue that holds a regional/major together. There will be a post separate from this one where I interview one of the vendors from Artist Alley, but the same sentiment is stated here. There are so many vendors in the Artist Alley with their own story and own purpose for doing what they love.
I, in fact, covered an Artist Alley vendor at the Con itself! However, I feel a paragraph alone won’t be enough to give them justice, so please be sure to read the companion article here where I discuss meeting with Bunnies & Cream! You don’t want to miss it, for sure!
In any case, the same could be said for cosplayers. Cosplayers are not so much the glue, but the exoskeleton that makes the entire convention worth it. Each cosplayer has their own story in terms of what got them into it, how long they’ve been doing it, and what made them cosplay certain characters.
Unfortunately, things can tend to go awry when you least expect it. The blade on your sword prop may hang loose, an annoying thread may linger on one’s dress, a shirt may be ripping from the seams. All of these nightmares are easily avoided by those on standby who are dedicated to make any mess a fixable one!
This was quite possibly one of the few points of interest that I saw at the convention. An “all in one” emergency repair station not unlike one you would see at a convention. I couldn’t help myself. I had to learn more. Thankfully these guys were friendly enough to answer my questions I’ve had. Big thanks!
youtube
youtube
With all of the maintenance that goes into making the perfect, subjectively of course, cosplay, no matter if it’s been a decade or ten days, every cosplayer is equally important to the well-being of any convention.
Even moreso when cosplayers engage in violent carnage within the squared circle and go for a swinging neck cutter as a finishing move.
Tumblr media
In what was perhaps the highlight of the convention, the Cosplay Pro Wrestling event was a fitting end to an action packed weekend. Although I had caught it while in the middle of the event, what surprised me the most was how there was an actual story arc.
From what I was able to gather, the main story arc revolved around the face, or hero, Big Boss, feuding with Team Rocket, who formed an allegiance with Princess Peach. The main event was scheduled for Big Boss vs Princess Peach for the title.
Throughout the set, one of the matches I did see in its fullest was Winter Soldier versus, and I quote, “Jeff Harley Quinn.”
As you could expect from the name alone, this Harley Quinn shared a lot of Jeff Hardy’s likeliness as far as his mannerisms and his moveset. What one may not have expected, was Winter Soldier, who bore resemblance and a moveset similar to Roman Reigns.
Spears, Twists of Fates, Leg Drops, and Swanton Bombs were present here as one would expect to see from fans of both wrestlers, yet they also brought about some of Quinn’s cunning which was what gave her the overall victory.
Tumblr media
Harley Quinn by Catie V
Eventually, after a match of Link vs Liu Kang, the main event transpired. Paing homage to heel stables of the Attitude Era, trickery was used while Team Rocket was able to give enough damage to Big Boss to have Princess Peach secure the pin.
However, when all hope seemed lost... Mario and Luigi, decked out in “Bullet Bill Club” shirts, went out and chased Team Rocket as well as Princess Peach out of the ring. What followed after was a tag team match, with more story building now that the Bullet Bill Club entered the scene.
youtube
There was so much more that could be said as to what transpired in this two hour finale to an otherwise action packed weekend, including one of the guys from Attack on Titan fighting Isabelle from Animal Crossing, but it was one of those events where you had to be there to experience it.
That’s the one thing I can say about the convention. For a two-day con, there was always something to experience. If you wanted to meet one of your favorite voice actresses like I had, you could do so.
Tumblr media
If you wanted to take in the sights and experience panels and learn new things about otaku culture and the like, you could do so as well. There’s literally no right or wrong way to attend the convention and the only thing that I can recommend is to do everything you possibly can. Unfortunately some conventions don’t have that, but, with this year’s Castle Point I can definitely say that the community as well as the staff had pulled out all the stops to make it memorable.
With that said in conclusion, for this being my first anime convention of the year, it was a fantastic way to start. Thank you once again to the Castle Point staff for giving myself and my fellow members of the Geeks podcast for giving us the opportunity. I’ll definitely try to attend next year for sure.
As always, may the Lost Summer never end! Tune to us soon for the next post!
Cheats For Payday 2
Fittingly, Payday 2 Xbox One Code is like a loan provider heist. Even though it could appear boorish, it s essentially among the finest portions of the information. |As i followed i most likely could remain located in naive bystanders, i wasn t even pleased anymore. A part of why it truly is so tricky, and pleasant, is all of the different data and conditions that play the game important assignments. These ai helpers aren t even allowed to obtaining coupled with aims or transporting dollars sacks, paying the most effective, most simple objectives virtually unplayable. Its mechanics are exceedingly serious, and it is building so unknown when compared with common shooters, it could actually seem to be mind-boggling when civilians are performing every single which way, your thermal drill is jamming upon targeted lender vault, and law enforcement sirens are getting louder and louder inside your the ears. Regardless of whether you choose an conveniently secret silenced pistol or simply a large bullet garden hose that frightens civilians into submitting through its throaty record, crimewave edition has a handgun for you personally. Unfortunately, it s. That expressed, seems to be certainly never was the reason experiencing Payday 2 Xbox One Code its tactical range is. |Even though it does not just position the integrated provide power to the ps4 and xbox an individual to ideal use, Payday 2 Xbox One Code crimewave edition is the greatest checking control console form of Payday 2 Xbox One Code you will definately get, as well as the cost efficient on any software for obtaining its insightful down-loadable article. How about we recommendations reference the really structural matchmaking? I purchasedorbefore decided to buy the sport for x1 so i have attempted 20 times to participate in a matchmade ammunition trainer, and simply now that has it labored. At this moment this is a dreadful single gamer ammunition trainer and the likes of witcher 3, batman with air conditioning dark colored flag currently cost free for xbl gold folks, i ve zero time/use for Payday 2 Xbox One Code failedtojoingamewave edition. The rear doorway was open concerning this work that had been handy, given that it designed the manager would most probably get a stroll exterior. In an abundance of approaches, immediately after from where all things should go 100 % absolutely wrong may just be the soul for this helpful 1st woman shooter. Often it s considering fuzzy restrictions, while you might re even now formally caring, as was the specific situation with my silenced gunshot turning out to be heard with the top notch. |Payday 2 would like consumers to most definitely are unsuccessful because it is definitely not a heist ammunition trainer notwithstanding a heist styled siege shooter. These weaponry have trustworthy heft and should go bullets in very loud, percussive blasts. Payday is roughly the fast paced pleasure of improvising, by what transpires when you first and three or more friends give up on your best possible put blueprints. developed node all over the satellite overview of an township. proficiency trees, the recognizable aspect to top notch is find three or more friends and choose your specialisation, and then every tree has three or more specific branches. simply has not randomly unlocked at this point. In crime, just as with ammunition trainer evolution, all things doesn t make sure you go as designed. This mix of You cant ever be very nicely prepared for wages, and that is certainly the particular way it needs to be. Or a person, around could very well see the tinkling of weakened glass, and right before lengthy, the cops are enroute and also your get away from vehicle has bugged out. |Dangle within lengthy satisfactory, and so you ll inevitably be overrun, regardless of how efficiently you delay and challenge the progressing surf. Whilst you increase values and create dollars and xp, you discover new purchasable weaponry for this collection and therefore are recognized with proficiency points you could get all the way to many expertise that in addition have a fee. It s pleasing to work all the way to further expertise and great to set them into measures. One can find an attractive new handgun attachment, notwithstanding, you can rather wrap up a record of a little income extra or materials used to craft a whole new cover up. To have legendary crime rampage. Amir lied. Makes the video game unfounded and 100 % ignores individuals that get a minor fortune and time to the ammunition trainer. Just at the time you think about you can find the The sole guide they can be working at markets are more ammunition sacks and also a get when investing in knocked more affordable. |Though ‘payday the heist’ held that just as well i came across The proficiency trees now will be the mastermind (principally the best choice via the load, he has the capacity to from systems and restorative healing in direction of the company), the technician (forget about hesitating for looking forward to a person to choose tresses, use the tech to blow an opening on the divider), the enforcer (basically the arnold schwarzenegger via the company, he s your gunman) as well as the ghost (he s the stealthy mofo, use him to jam technology, and scanning devices). The hud is tidy and uncomplicated, next to nothing cluttering the tv screen and masking tips to be checking at. It is a several gamer co op shooter, with proficiency trees and it is unique form of loot falls. Nevertheless, any time you re allowed to assume that every heist is usually a separate multiple gamer ordeal that will not of course pass to the next heist, it is best to be all right. That, as well as the in ammunition trainer dollars and loot carry out a great task motivating consumers to most definitely maintain playing. The teammate ai isn t great that could t make contact with objects, being sure objective The game has several proficiency trees to set your points into every “class” may bring much needed choices to objectives. |essentially is the fact that returns, dollars and ordeal is bought inside of the wrap up for this effectual objective. One of the top-quality experiencing Payday 2 Xbox One Code get wages would like to play the game Payday 2 Xbox One Code. The following you select among predetermined deals with predetermined situations and predetermined perks, with objectives winking out in addition to towards the timer. On a second think about you are obtaining very far within this make sure you and merely several gamer ammunition trainer with ai members, who even now suffer from the exact same restriction they have on the classic payday. The overkill boys know their measures cinema. The most effective put blueprints of rats and males gang aft one more objective. Moreover, there is considerably less adaptability when compared with previous ammunition trainer when considering who will prepare which loadouts. However, our safecracker would kindly encourage the manager to allow his keycard, switch off the protection system and obtain drilling all over the vault, since two people throughout our function appeared for almost any civilians we d overlooked on the backrooms and stashed a wrist watch exterior. |Time for you to go very loud. brilliantly pounding boogie sound requires greater than, blueprints get reformulated and assignments reassigned as soon as possible, supply essentially the most powerful helpful thrills i have got previously encountered exterior for this guess on kept 4 old 2. When my company and that also i at last implemented an ingenious, optimal heist we realized it making use of a zero threshold policies all the way to these unknown naive bystanders we wiped out everyone all over the periphery who could stop being strapped more affordable. The meth laboratory objective takes a minumum of just one company participant to lightly attach elements in direction of the mix inside of the optimal time, while you are everybody different fights highly armoured swat enforcers with the cooking locale downstairs. The situations you may be guarding have various exits, flooring surfaces and entrance doors, where are some things about looking within your given entry ways, relying upon your allies to handle their team via the eliminate, which makes experiences making use of the an increasing number of difficult surf of law enforcement push truly feel significantly more nuanced and tactical than most likely they can be essentially. Regardless of whether the number fails to boot consumers to be inadequate place you ll hardly ever take advantage of the transmission every single newbie criminal ensemble must have. Thank goodness, the type progression dishes be apparent satisfactory, and Payday 2 Xbox One Code offers a complicated category of proficiency trees you are able to flit from on impulse. The better you play the game, the larger expertise you discover, the larger you specialize in your team, as well as the greater you learn how every heist s just a bit randomised rhythms, the larger interesting you will get. Payday 2 is mainly an online centered multiple gamer 1st woman shooter members choose a heist when using new and unnecessarily complicated “crime.net” an online graphic program that features since objective |This wasn t a perfect decision, as stealth isn t great at 1st woman aimbots, and it is made even more difficult at this website throughout the useless ai enemies will randomly place you together with also switch on alarm systems it doesn t question how in close proximity or banned the thing you do is, also in the unfortunate incident that you will be relying on crawlers inside your category of several, you can find extremely frequently them to will probably result in alarm systems or begin with firing into crowds of people, spoiling any potential for confidentially finish a objective. Authorities, security, and swat equally haven t a great deal of consideration for their unique dwells, performing headfirst into gunfire and considering go over in regards to objects that do not are available. This can be purportedly aided by greater components unlocked throughout the ammunition trainer s rpg system, from where members can discover further expertise and merchandise by winning connection with heists, nonetheless it prices hours immediately after hours of ammunition trainer play the game to gain values as well as the essentially worthwhile components expectations plenty of None of the is always to say Payday 2 Xbox One Code isn t great, just unsatisfactory. And surprisingly, Payday 2 Xbox One Code does indeed offer a narrative in regards to all of the figures together with crime us dot online. Bain would certainly flame whomever imperfections, place their slice, and destroy them, 2. you might want to deficiency, and so you visit even if chart that s just the back end for this vehicle to murder everybody indoors two or three seconds or simply a small-scale all round fps fashion chart and problem the other person cod fashion. By using the release of Payday 2 Xbox One Code the large ranking, a lot of dough via the crimewave edition and the formerly released dlc kits up to the wrap up of 2015 (you will still requirement pay money for dlc out of this twelve months independently) and a couple of new enhancements, i required to discover should i most likely could recapture the existing wonder. Subsequently after i discontinued playing portable computer laptop or computer ammunition trainer, i d an entirely made figure and also a reliable team of heavy steam friends to immediately after as soon as i is at the atmosphere to get a heist. |Very low place figures is usually fitted just like the qualified personnel in heat, but make no fault, they readily share significantly more that is just like the wet bandits than people. Immediately after you get place 100, you are able to principally reputation for some greater infamy place to discover exclusive cosmetics and titles at the fee for your dollars. In addition they take up stock room space that although ample, finally expires and should be grown with at this point a higher price. There s quite a lot to use interesting with and individualize in Payday 2 Xbox One Code, even though a lot of it requires a grind that would not be unnatural within a free to play the game ammunition trainer. Teammates even now just stare at Should you really certainly never picked out inside of the crimewave edition for as well for this existing gen consoles, $49.99 is certainly not an inadequate total price just to begin the process and enjoy yourself with many dlc that is released. such as a unique less blow for fanatics who ve remained making use of the ammunition trainer. Seize half a dozen sacks of funds, significantly more once we are feeling convinced. |The jerk called the cops quickly as soon as he noticed us. These objectives may additionally range between straightforward lender robberies to transporting remedies, although, it doesn t question what exactly the constructed is, most seem to requirement consumers to enter one thing, and also to continue excessive cost supplements to get your getaway truck. I actually do not genuinely create a numerous loadout, it fully will depend on which sorts of objective it s and simply what all of those other squad s makeup is. This getting started position takes place when Payday 2 Xbox One Code shines while you are snap outs are an aspect of the heist imagination, a perfect criminal fails to want to rely on it, best suited?
Yousician: an app to learn an instrument, or more?
By Ivana van der Zant
So, lately in quarantine I’ve been sucked into the YouTube-wormhole. It started out by just listening some music but then the YouTube-wormhole got me looking at all my favorite 80s videoclips for the one-thousandth time. All of a sudden it was dark outside and I realized I wasted all day watching L.A. Guns, Def Leppard and Whitesnake perform their songs and it made me realize I could have been more productive. I decided to do so the next day. I needed to up my guitar skills, so I started following tutorials on YouTube, of all my favorite songs, when I got the millionth ad of that day, but this time the ad was from an app called Yousician. An app in which you can learn guitar in an easy and structured way.
I was interested right away, because well, maybe learning guitar in a structured way was more productive than moving from one song to another. The ad told me what this app is all about, you get real time feedback and instructions to help you improve, set goals, record your progress and learn the guitar, all at your own pace. It has been designed by experts to keep you motivated whilst having fun when you learn. The app is also your personal music tutor:
“Yousician is an educational app with a game component that helps beginners to learn guitar, piano, bass and ukulele, and supports professional musicians in their daily practice”. <1>
I decided to try the app out for myself, to see what about this apps make you learn and play a game at the same time, ultimately making it a ludo-musical object. When starting the app you need to create an account and buy a one month membership in order to be able to use your seven day free trial as they promise you. Once you’ve had the whole process of choosing your instrument and you skill-level, you have to tune your guitar to standard tuning and plug your electric guitar into an amp in order for the app to be able to hear what you’re playing. But then, finally, the fun starts and you get rewarded by the first video. This video starts at the very basics of playing guitar, it explains how to tune your guitar, where the strings are and ultimately how the app works. Then you get the first exercise, playing ‘Seven Nation Army’ on two open strings, which, of course, is not the official tab of the song, but will do for now. Right away this app gave me the impression that these first exercises were more about learning how the app works and your timing than the actual playing and learning.
The further you get in your lessons, the more options you get. You can play more and more songs, you can work on different parts of the songs separately, change the speed of the song to a pace you’re comfortable with and you can work on your listening skills. Something I wasn’t expecting, but you can also learn all about the theory behind music and ultimately get rewarded by earning points and stars, to get at higher levels and get more options.
In a sense, Yousician can be compared with the very popular game ‘Guitar Hero’, in which you can ‘be a rockstar’ by playing on a plastic guitar with a few brightly colored buttons.<2> The plastic guitar is the game controller and in front of you, you have your screen, where you can see a guitar-neck and the notes you are supposed to play, or which different colored buttons you need to hit on time.<3> In this game, can choose a variety of distinctive ‘guitar songs’ in disparate difficulty levels. On the screen the different colored ‘gems’ come towards you via ‘note tunnels’<4> and you need to hit them right on time. To make things more difficult, you also have a plastic whammy-bar and a bar in the middle that makes you be able to hold in a color and still play separate notes of the same color. The objective of this game is to get as good as possible at the songs, breaking your own high scores and end up being number one on the international leaderboard.<5>
The developers of Guitar Hero, later developed Rock Band 3, which invites up to seven people to form a band in order to perform rock songs. The old guitar console can still be used, but the builders of this game, developed more consoles, such as microphones, a drum kit and even a two octave keyboard. To play this game together it is required to have a certain level of rhythmic accuracy, but I do think that this game in general is based on a certain sense of rhythm, after all, you do need to push the buttons on time.<6>
In this way, I think Yousician is very similar to Guitar Hero, and might have been influenced by the game. Both Yousician and Guitar Hero are based around the same rhythmic basis. Even the in-game screen looks kind of similar. Although Yousician has a horizontal guitar neck and Guitar Hero has a vertical one, on both of the screens you see the notes/’gems’ that transport over the screen, you see which notes/buttons you should play, if you are in time or not, and of course the high score to keep it a bit more challenging.
Tumblr media
Yousician screen
Tumblr media
Guitar Hero screen
I think the difference between these two programs lies mainly on its intentions. Whereas Guitar Hero is more of a fun game to play, Yousician is more focused on learning the guitar and does so in a more playful, almost game-like way. But both do have a leaderboard in order for you to want to get better and better.
Ludomusicology
Ludology is the study of games, game players and its culture, it is also called game studies. Ludomusicology is kind of similar, but is mainly focused on the musicological part of games. Whether it be music in games, music made by games, but also music with game components and so forth. Roger Callois made his own gametaxonomy, he divides games into four different components, agōn (battle), ales (chance), mimicry (imitation) and ilinx (vertigo). In this taxonomy, he has a distinguish between ludus (game) and paidia (play).<7>
I think both Yousician and Guitar Hero fit very well in the agōn subdivision, both are focused on getting the highest score , whilst Yousician is more focused on defeating your own high scores, and ultimately getting better at playing the guitar, Guitar Hero is more focused on defeating the all-time high scores and become the highest ranked, and the best at the game. I also think that both Yousician and Guitar Hero fit best in the subdivision of ludus, both are very structured and are gradually increasing their level of difficulty. Although the focus, again, with Yousician is to learn to play the guitar better and with Guitar Hero is to defeat te all-time high scores.
I think Yousician is a good example of a ludomusicological subject, because it incorporates learning the guitar with a game component. We’ve seen that Yousician in some ways is compatible with Guitar Hero and whilst they have a lot in common, they also have their differences, mainly on where the focus of the game lies and what the actual intention of the game is.
