Lan Xichen hasn’t seen Wangji this upset in thirteen years and he has no idea what could be the cause. He guides him to A-Yao’s private garden, mind spinning. If Xuanyu were in some sort of immediate danger, Wangji would not leave her side. He’s sure of that and it’s all that’s keeping him from marching back to Jiang Yanli and demanding an explanation out of her himself. He hopes Sizhui hasn’t noticed the commotion, certain it will cause his nephew to worry, but he doesn’t spare too much thought on it because right now his first concern is his brother.
Worryingly, when they come to a stop Wangji just continues to stare at him blankly.
“What happened?” he asks, resisting the urge to grab him by his shoulders and shake him. “Did you and Xuanyu get into a disagreement?”
Perhaps something to do with Jin Guangshan? Lan Xichen has long abandoned the idea that she’s some sort of spy, as has A-Yao, but that doesn’t mean her father can’t want things from her, can’t be trying to make things difficult for her. Perhaps Jiang Yanli was warning her and Xuanyu and Wangji had a fight about it? They fight often enough that he can’t imagine anything that would send Wangji running.
“I’ve done something terrible,” Wangji says tonelessly. “This is my fault.”
Wangji faced down forty Lan clan elders and received forty lashings all without admitting a single moment of poor judgement or regret. Punishments he accepts easily – culpability, significantly less.
“What are you talking about?” he demands, trying to keep the alarm out of his voice. “What did you do?”
“Xuanyu,” he starts, then presses his lips together and shakes his head.
He would not harm Xuanyu. Even that spar that set half the clan to breaking the rules about gossip was not about harm. He’ll fight her, argue with her, spar with her, but Wangji worries and watches over Xuanyu constantly, vexed and surprised by her at turns, and Lan Xichen had felt aching relief when the woman his brother had been coerced to marry had turned out to be someone that Wangji couldn’t look away from.
He forces himself to sound calm. “What about Xuanyu?”
Wangji wets his lips and has to clear his throat twice before he can make himself speak. “She’s pregnant.”
Lan Xichen stares.
The relief is enough to make his knees week and his grip on Wangji’s shoulder doubles as a way to steady himself. “Wangji! You nearly gave me a heart attack! This is wonderful-”
“Wonderful?” he repeats, looking at him like he’s grown another head.
Some of that relief drains away. “Is it not? Is something wrong with the baby? Or Xuanyu? I know she was a little weak when you married, but she’s gotten so much stronger.” A terrible thought occurs to him. “Is she – she’s happy about it, isn’t she? She said that she likes kids and she’s so good with Sizhui, she must be happy.”
“I,” Wangji blinks, “I don’t – I didn’t ask–”
“Well, what did you say?” he asks in exasperation.
“I apologized.”
A-Yao isn’t here, but Lan Xichen feels the familiar urge to turn to him. “You apologized.” Wangji nods. “Xuanyu told you that she was carrying your child. And you apologized. Then left.”
He nods again, slower this time.
Lan Xichen grips the bridge of his nose.
“LAN WANGJI!”
They both turn to see Jiang Cheng headed straight for them, sword unsheathed and Zidian sparking, although that’s not the most alarming part. The last time Lan Xichen saw that look on Jiang Cheng’s face, they were on a battlefield.
This, at least, likely is Wangji’s fault.

Do you guys think when Jin Ling was little and Jiang Cheng was exhausted he ever accidentally called him A-Li instead of A-Ling because his mouth was so used to shaping those sounds.
Do you think when Jin Ling was a little older and willful and taking risks and Jiang Cheng was feeling a familiar emotional cocktail of fondness-exasperation-frustration-worry he ever stopped mid lecture because he realized he was about to call him Wei Wuxian.

I don't know if you already answered this so feel free to ignore.
What is your thoughts on Yu Ziyuan? am I the only one that thinks fandon defence of her saying she is just the typical Asian tiger mom is insulting to Asian mothers? You can be strict and not be abusive and guess what? YZ is not it.
Hell the author themselves made an entire chapter to say that she took things too far too often against a single person to be simple discipline towards a disciple. It was personal and she took great pleasure in it, just bc WY decides to stay despite his treatment doesn't make it any less horrible.
Am i the only one that thinks she only accepted WC orders to whip WY because she always took any chance to do so? That if Wang Lingjao hadn't mentioned she would have to be subservient to someone of lower class she would have gleefully cut off WYs hand and not reacted at all to the Wen invasion?
That in her last moments she made sure to remind WY one last time that he would be nothing but a servant to her, to tie him with a last wish so he would have the moral obligation to give up everything to JC like a proper servant should? I wholly believe part of her sudden tenderness to JC in her last goodbye was to also rub in WY face not only what he never had but what JC was losing just to rub salt in the wound.
Just, in what universe does people see a girlboss misunderstood by the world and its sexism? sometimes i think i read the wrong books or saw a different show... am i really the only one that sees this?
Good evening anon, I've been sitting on this a bit as I was weighing how exactly to answer this coherently. So, for the short answer; I do not like her as a character nor is she supposed to be seen as anything deeper than what she is. A terrible mother and person who let resentment rule her.
The Long Answer: She is not misunderstood, she is very easy to break down. She was a jealous youth who actively agreed to a marriage where the fiancé was already lukewarm to her disposition and continued to cast blame on Cangse Sanren stealing something she never had. Note as well, as she was the one to force a marriage and insisted on this even after Cangse Sanren had married Wei Changze. She is selfish and entitled. This carries over to how she treats her children, she is not happy with her own self, so she hyper focused on the flaws she instilled within Jiang Cheng. Instead of actually supporting him as a mother should, she insults him and instead of love she actively despises and insults her own child. This is not a healthy parental figure. She was hardly there enough obviously to even think of offering care and love in a very negligent household. She laughs instead when Wei Wuxian is brought in she is more concerned about being proven right about adding another child into the household will disrupt their already volatile dislike of each other.
Not once does she praise her children she fixates on despising Wei Wuxian and being annoyed he is able to be talented naturally so much she constantly pits her son against him herself and encourages that resentment to grow in him. She does not care about anything other than her own festering hate, and sure as hell never nurtured her own with love. She is miserable, pathetic and no whatever love she may have held for Jiang Cheng was toxic and all the worse to him as she never uplifted him as an actual loving parent should.
Her treatment of Wei Wuxian is certainly just as vile given he wasn't even her own yet she stayed forever jealous all over her own stories that exasperated her own hate for Cangse Sanren and superimposed that to Wei Wuxian. She has no excuse for her treatment of any of the children under her household. Hate is a sad way to live and end life, and it stops being sympathetic when she lived and died garnering the feelings and reactions she earned with it.

In the midst of bustling days at the Cloud Recesses, he often found himself stealing glances at her. Lan Y/n, a presence that both soothed and agitated his heart, and was a force he couldn't ignore. Their paths crossed often, her laughter echoing like chimes in his ears. Yet, with each joyful interaction he witnessed between her and Jiang Cheng, a shadow of doubt cast itself over his feelings.
Amidst the intricate dance of emotions, Lan Y/n's voice cut through the tension like a calming breeze. "A-cheng," she spoke gently, her words an attempt to soothe the unease that had taken root. "Don't be silly."
Jiang Cheng's response, unyielding and fervent, shattered the silence with its boldness. "Wei Wuxian doesn't deserve you," he declared, his words resounding with a conviction that brooked no argument. "He's too busy chasing around Lan Wangji."
Lan Y/n's laughter, like a soft melody, echoed through the air. "Lan Wangji is my brother," she explained, her tone laced with amusement. "It's only natural that they spend time together."
But Jiang Cheng wasn't swayed, his voice rising as he continued to press his point. "See?" His exasperation was palpable, his frustration echoing through the space. "You're too good for him."
For Wei Wuxian, the exchange was a whirlwind of emotions, his heart a canvas splattered with colors of uncertainty and understanding. He listened as Lan Y/n's voice wavered, her hesitation a reflection of the complexity of the situation. "A-cheng, I'm flattered," she admitted, her words laced with both gratitude and uncertainty. "But this is inappropriate behavior. I'm with A-xian now. It's time for you to accept that."
"If you'd only give me a chance," Jiang Cheng's voice was laced with a mixture of desperation and longing, his words hanging in the air like a plea. In a moment fueled by his emotions, he leaned in, attempting to bridge the distance between them with a kiss. But Y/n's instincts kicked in, and with a resolute push, she managed to create a space between them, halting his advances. It was a gesture that spoke volumes, a silent boundary that held within it her unwavering stance.
As the echoes of their interaction reverberated, Y/n's gaze darted, her heart seizing as she caught sight of Wei Wuxian turning to leave. "A-xian!" she called out, her voice a mixture of desperation and urgency. "Wait! What you saw was a complete misunderstanding!"
But his form continued to recede, each step carrying him away from her, and her words seemed to dissipate into the air, unheard by the retreating figure.
"A-y/n," Wei Wuxian's voice was gentle yet resolute, his words carrying a weight that held a spectrum of emotions. "I've seen the ways you guys interact with each other. You don't need to hide it."

"If she had never crossed paths with you," Lan Xichen added with a hint of bitterness, "she wouldn't have experienced so much heartache, and she wouldn't have compromised her principles for one mortal man."
Wei Wuxian's gaze dropped, his expression a mixture of guilt and regret. He hadn't realized the extent of the pain he had inadvertently caused y/n. The weight of his actions weighed heavily on his heart as he absorbed the truth of Lan Xichen's words.
"Where is she now?" Wei Wuxian inquired anxiously.
"After your passing and her numerous unsuccessful attempts to seek revenge against Jiang Cheng, she secluded herself in her room for years. It seemed like history repeating itself again, and all of it traced back to you," Lan Xichen recounted before taking his leave, leaving Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian alone.
"Can I see her again?" Wei Wuxian's voice held a tinge of longing, the words escaping his lips like a fragile plea seeking solace.
Yet, silence remained in response, a heavy quietude that hung between them, only to be broken by the subtle incline of Lan Wangji's head. WWX dies after Sunshot Campaign Reputation Intact AU
Playing fast and loose with the timeline a bit, bear with me here.
It's almost perfect the Sunshot Campaign has ended, Jiang Cheng, Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian have returned to Lotus Pier.
Wei Wuxian sits outside overlooking the lake waving Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli off to bed to moonwatch a bit longer.
In the morning they find Wei Ying asleep in the same place they left him last night. Exasperated good humor fades into horror as they realise their brother isn't breathing anymore and had passed peacefully away in his sleep with a soft smile.
Visitors including the Lan, are turned away from Lotus Pier as Jiang Cheng checks that it wasn't a assassination. (it's not, Wei Wuxian body literally gave out on him because of the immense strain the Sunshot Campaign put him under).
The funeral is held privately at Lotus Pier and Wei Wuxian's tablet is added to the Family Shrine.
The first the Cultivation World learns of Wei Wuxian's death is at the Phoenix Mountain Hunt when Jin Zixun callously asks why the Jiang Sect are still wearing mourning attire and Jiang Yanli replies in front of every Cultivator at the hunt that the Jiang Sect is in mourning for the death of Wei Wuxian.
(Wen Qing encounters Lan Wangji and learns that Wei Wuxian is dead. Lan Wangji overhears her muttering that its her fault and pressures her for a answer. A answer she won't give unless Lan Wangji helps her rescue her brother Wen Ning...)
Wei Wuxian returns to a world that knows of his sacrifice (A concept that gives him hives) a brother ready to either whip him or hug him and Jiang Yanli and her husband Nie Huisang who both want him to investigate the truth behind the murder of Nie Mingjue and Jin Zixuan and expose Jin Guangyao.
Because ironically Wei Wuxian has the best reputation of the lot of them having died a hero and willingly endured a Golden Core Transfer Surgery as the donor. Lan Wangji's reputation took a nosedive when he rescued the Wen Remnants and barely survived the Propaganda storm of rumors by the Jin for opposing them by going into seclusion.

“I just want to be clear about expectations,” Jiang Cheng said, and the female cultivator – Lu Xue – nodded. She was still smiling. “Your expectations, to be clear. I don’t want you to enter into this with any sort of illusions or anything.”
“Of course not,” she said agreeably.
“I’m not actually looking to marry,” Jiang Cheng stressed. “Not now, anyway, and maybe not ever. Even if I did, there is zero guarantee that if I did marry, it would be with you.”
“Yes, you made that clear.”
“I’m not looking for anything exclusive, either. I’m looking to have as many children as possible. There will be other women.”
“You said, yes.”
“There’s no way for me to say right now that it would be your child that inherits the Lotus Pier, either. So you should go in assuming it won’t be, because if I see the slightest hint of intrigue, it’ll disqualify both you and them immediately.”
“I understand. A reasonable policy.”
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t even think it’s possible for me to fall in love, so definitely don’t expect that.”
“So noted.”
Exasperated, Jiang Cheng scowled and said, “Then what are you getting out of this?”
“Respect,” Lu Xue said promptly, and he blinked at her. “A child of my own, with an honorable surname and a guarantee of a good life – a father who will recognize them as his own and care for them, love them regardless of merit or achievement. Freedom to do as I wish, without restriction – you said that I could keep night-hunting afterwards, if that was what I wanted…?”
“Of course,” Jiang Cheng said, aghast at the mere thought. He remembered very well how much his mother had chafed at the restriction on married women; he’d always thought that his home life growing up would have been infinitely easier if only she’d been allowed to continue doing that, rather than taking out her frustrations on all the disciplines instead. “I would never impose such a limitation on you.”
“And you wouldn’t be upset if I eventually fell in love with someone else, either?”
“Of course not. That would be rather hypocritical of me, wouldn’t it?”
“But if I wanted to stop night-hunting, I’d have a place at the Lotus Pier?”
“For as long as you live,” Jiang Cheng said seriously. “Even if you never do end up conceiving. I would never enter into this type of agreement lightly.”
Lu Xue spread her hands out as if to say You see?
“It helps that you’re honest and upfront about it,” she added, even when he scowled at her as if to respond that’s it?! “Most men will promise the moon if it gets them what they want.”
Jiang Cheng supposed he understood that much, at least. He certainly wouldn’t appreciate being deceived.
“So, shall we go to bed now, or would you prefer to have dinner first?”
“…dinner,” Jiang Cheng squeaked. Lu Xue was the fourth young lady Nie Huaisang had (successfully) arranged for him to meet, and he was starting to think he’d severely misjudged how bold most female cultivators were. “Dinner, a medical check up –” Nie Huaisang had insisted, lest someone try to plant a cuckoo on him, even though there were bloodline-tied treasures a-plenty to test it with after the child was born. “ – and then we can proceed. If that works…?”

Forgetting AU | angst , happy end, WIP (will build in more detail in the future)
His 3rd shidi and 2nd shimei who had a habit of reading all the new books on love and lore that the peddlers sold in Yunmeng market, were talking about diseases for a change that day. To be more precise, Wei Wuxian walked in on 2nd shimei sobbing like the world was ending and 3rd shidi in a despair trying his best to comfort her.
"Aiya, Shidi what did you do to make her cry this hard?" Of course Wei Wuxian poked his nose because he was curious that way. "You know good gentlemen never make maidens cry!" 
"I did nothing, Da-shixiong!" 3rd Shidi insisted sounding offended. "She got upset reading about the forgetting disease because she thought she would forget me!"
"The forgetting disease?" Intrigue sparked, Wei Wuxian reached out for the abandoned booklet even as his juniors bickered and read through the page that had it's corners blotted from the tears 2nd Shimei had shed.
`A disease where one would forget every little thing about the one they love if the love is not returned. If the love is requited before every thread of memory is lost, the person's memories could come back. "Goodness, the things kids read these days!" Wei Wuxian laughed and set aside the book to console his juniors and solve the fight.
Despite his initial dismissal, Wei Wuxian couldn't stop thinking about the little booklet and its passage on that strange disease. As with everything, he asked Jiang Cheng about his opinion and merely received an answer in the form of a characteristic scoff. "Since when have you begun indulging in children's fairytales again? Quit wasting time, mom's mad at you for missing training!"
"Crap!" Wei Wuxian exclaimed. "Help me hide! Please A-Cheng!"
The booklet and it's disease was pushed to the back of the mind for the day and more to come.
And then it happened. It started with the smallest of things that could be easily dismissed for the usual lapse in memory and Wei Wuxian didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary.
"Ohh! You have a funny freckle on the bridge of your nose!" He cackled one day, poking at the mentioned element and Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes in exasperation. 
"Didn't you tease me with it like three years ago already?? Why are you acting like you're noticing it only now?"
That made Wei Wuxian's finger twitch. "Have I though?"
"You really need to do something about your memory!" Jiang Cheng shoved him good heartedly before walking away. "It's getting worse! Last time you even forgot I like my lotus seeds toasted!"
A brief flash of discomfort went through him but Wei Wuxian dismissed it and ran after Jiang Cheng to sling an arm around his shoulders again. "Aiya, spare me! You know how these little things slip from my mind sometimes! Why are you so harsh? Be nicer to me Chengcheng!"
"You wish!" _____ Wei Wuxian didn't remember if Jiang Cheng was good with dogs. He watched, from the top of the tree in some amount of awe as Jiang Cheng easily shooed away that hulking monster of a dog and then called to him to come down.
"Thanks!" He chirped as he jumped down the tree. "That was awesome! Since when were you so good at dealing with dogs?"
Jiang Cheng gave him the strangest look, perhaps with a tinge of pain. Maybe anger. "Wei Wuxian what the fuck are you talking about?"
Wei Wuxian stopped then, suddenly bothered. Something felt wrong. He began questioning if this memory loss was really his usual bad memory acting up?
There was....a history between him and Jiang Cheng related to dogs, right? An important one. So....how had he--
He sought out 2nd Shimei and borrowed her book. After he was done reading it, he went out to feverishly buy every other book he could find on the subject. There was a part of him that + couldn't believe he was in love with Jiang Cheng. What was being in love supposed to be even like? But now....the signs were there right? And the terror of forgetting bit by bit every day became a part of him, killing the cheerful child in him early on.
He could not forget. 
He refused to forget. Wei Wuxian would figure something out.
(He refused to think of the sting that went through him at the knowledge that he loved Jiang Cheng and Jiang Cheng didn't love him back. It shouldn't have been surprising yet it still....)
Come Gusu, he trailed after Lan Wangji, finding something about the man familiar to someone he didn't know how to put a name on. And when Nie Huaisang whined to him (perhaps with a silent indirect reprimand too) about him spending too little time with him and Jiang-xiong, Wei Wuxian was initially left confused on whether Jiang Cheng and him had ever been friends at all before being thunderstruck by remembrance and horror.
"Lan Zhan, I need to ask for a favour," Wei Wuxian's tone was grave that day as he talked to the 2nd Jade. Lan Wangji turned to him in + full attention, having noticed the unusual gravity. "Does the Library Pavilion have any books on diseases or afflictions close to diseases?"
"The Forbidden Section may have some," Lan Wangji answered, eyebrows furrowed. It was a strange question to ask no doubt. "However it is open to only the members of Gusu Lan. I cannot take you there."
"Please? Just this one time?" Perhaps Wei Wuxian was desperate enough to beg. Perhaps Lan Wangji saw the urgency and the ice in his eyes melted a little. "It's important and I don't think I have time to waste"
"I cannot take you there," Lan Wangji repeated slowly and Wei Wuxian felt his heart burst in irrational anger. He almost retorted with something scathing before Lan Wangji continued speaking. "But if it is truly of such importance, I can bring back some books." _____
Wei Wuxian took to writing down all the precious memories he still had with his Jiang Cheng before he forgot them all. Alongside, he wrote his first research papers, trying to find a solution to reverse the curse because every book he'd read offered none.
He wouldn't forget.
He would force himself to remember.
Lotus Pier burnt.
Jiang Cheng lost his core and the righteous fury Wei Wuxian felt was something he clung to. His love for his shidi would burn bright through his anger if not his memories. Wei Wuxian gave away his core and soothed himself saying that it was a good decision. If....someday he forgot Jiang Cheng completely then his core would still remember.
The war raged on. Wei Wuxian came back, a specter of his old self, the only memories of Jiang Cheng still in him that of the person's name and looks+ and the fact that he loved him. He no longer remembered the childhood they had once shared.
And as the war continued...Wei Wuxian forgot he'd been fighting for Jiang Cheng and fought instead merely for the war to end.
The papers gathered dust, writings lessening with every day. Memories were ashes to the wind and the wind blew them away from Wei Wuxian's direction.
He grew irritable, bad tempered - especially when his Sect Leader continued to reprimand him in a tone that set them as familiar before Wei Wuxian would lash back and cause hurt to line the man's eyes. In some days, his memory of who Jiang Cheng truly was to him would return in patches and Wei Wuxian would wallow in deep regret for hurting the man over and over again. In other days, he would remember nothing - galivanting around with false bravado and an emptiness in his heart he could never explain.
When he confronted Jin Guangshan and Jin Zixun for the location of the Wens and they accused him for not respecting Jiang Cheng’s authority enough, Wei Wuxian felt genuine confusion when he turned to ask who that was and they responded with incredulous looks. He left with his heart tied in a complicated knot of shame and frustration as his memory of who Jiang Cheng was flickered once again.
He decided to defect. The way he was already, with his memory more gone than intact, he would only cause trouble for Jiang Cheng and the sect. His decision made sense to him and yet Jiang Cheng screamed and yelled at him for it. They fought, stabbed, cursed and finally broke all ties. Jiang Cheng left with tears swimming in his eyes and Wei Wuxian cried when Wen Qing fixed his wound.
"I'm forgetting him," he sobbed out loud for perhaps the first ever time. "I'm forgetting him, Wen Qing, I don't want to! I don't want to!"
But forget he did, and by the time he'd offended and killed enough people for the world to finally decree that they couldn't let him live anymore, Wei Wuxian no longer remembered who Jiang Cheng was. He no longer remembered what happiness spending in the Jiang family had been like and he no longer remembered he'd damned himself to this Fate all out of love.
Before the siege burnt everything to the ground, and before the Qi deviation took him, Wei Wuxian heard footsteps echo into his cave and gathered the last strands of resentful energy even if it accelerated his deviation to send it in a strike. A strangely familiar sword glare intercepted it and a man in purple walked in - a haggard and broken look gracing his otherwise regal figure.
"Do you really hate me this much, Wei Wuxian?" his voice was hoarse "That not only you walked away, broke all contact and killed my A-Jie but you also pretend that you don't know me? What have I done to you to warrant treatment like this?"
"Have we met before?" Wei Wuxian asked softly, too tired to feel anything but the inexplicable pain that filled the hollow of his chest at the sight of the man. "I've not seen your face before so they must've gathered new sects for the siege."
The man closed his eyes and shuddered. "Wei Wuxian," his voice shook as he took the name and much to Wei Wuxian's surprise, tears spilled from his eyes. "Do you truly not remember me?"
"I'm sorry," Wei Wuxian felt the pain in his chest grow. They were....supposed to be enemies and yet the man wasn't making a move to attack. Instead he stood with clenched fists and pure brokenness written in his features, like Wei Wuxian had taken a cudgel and smashed his heart to pieces. "Were we acquaintances?"
The man scoffed which turned into a sob. "I no longer know what I was to you."
"Were you the one I loved then?" Wei Wuxian asked suddenly and made the man lift his head in shock. He couldn't exactly call it memory but...the pain in his chest felt familiar. "If...if you were then it might explain why I forgot." 
"What do you mean?"
"My first research papers. I came across them while destroying the...rest of it," Wei Wuxian said, talking more to himself than his companion. "They weren't about any cultivation techniques but about some forgetting disease. I was so confused when I found them. But I guess I always knew I was about to forget and wanted to change it. Pity it's still incomplete."
He didn't pay attention to the man in front of him as he spoke and hence failed to notice the spark of recognition that went through his eyes. Like he remembered something Wei Wuxian didn't.
"What's your name?" Wei Wuxian asked all of a sudden, making the other man jolt and then tear up some more.
"Jiang Cheng," he choked out.
And as Wei Wuxian tried repeating the name, he realized it did feel familiar on his tongue. His lips lifted into a regretful smile. "I guess it's just one of those many tales where someone loved a person and it wasn't mutual, instead it also ended up making me forget."
It was a simple straightforward sentence and yet the man, Jiang Cheng flinched like he'd been slapped.
"That's not true!" He cried out, red rimmed eyes blazing in desperation and regret. "That's not true! Even I..."
"Jiang Cheng," Wei Wuxian called, liking the name on his tongue. His heart still felt empty but he felt like maybe he could try one final time to smile. "The barriers around here have been broken so the siege force has finally reached me. I'll have to summon more corpses."
Jiang Cheng clutched on his sword and glared fiercely. "I'm taking you back with me."
Wei Wuxian shook his head still with the soft smile and held out his hand. With a sudden blast he sent the other man flying back and then threw a barrier talisman between them. "You can't save me."
"What the fuck are you doing?!" Jiang Cheng roared desperately as his fist pounded against the invisible barrier. "Wei Wuxian, let me in!"
"I'm Qi deviating," Wei Wuxian declared instead. He formed a hand seal for a final time with tears in his eyes. "And I don't want to hurt you."
He closed his eyes to the screaming man, ignoring the tears and pain in his heart. "Jiang Cheng....I'm sorry."
There was a flash of blinding light and then eternal+ darkness. With the memories and body dispersed, only his proof of love and the one he loved remained. ________
It felt like forever, floating in a confusing loop of dreams and nightmares, unaware of space and time. And then Wei Wuxian opened his eyes to life again. _________
He expected to have stayed dead and shunned by the world, not be given an unexpected second leash AND a new mystery to solve. Which had led him to Dafan Shan. Which then led him to beefing with a stuck up Jin teenager against his wishes.
"I'm his uncle, any last words?" 
The voice sounded strangely familiar and when Wei Wuxian turned to face who had spoken, he knew why.
"Oh, it's you," he couldn't help but blurt out. It wasn't a good idea to let his true identity be known to people from his past, Wei Wuxian knew that objectively. But he remembered how this man had been the last one to weep for him before he'd died. Made quite an impression on him, really. Somehow that made Wei Wuxian not afraid of him. "Well, what do you know? It's a relief to see at least one face who wouldn't want to kill me...I hope."
The man's eye twitched. "I'm sorry?"
"Ah, no, I should be the one sorry," Wei Wuxian said sheepishly, suddenly embarrassed. "I assumed you'd remember me but I'd forgotten my body is no longer the same now. Oh wow, now I really do sound like a lunatic."
"Jiujiu, what's wrong with him?" Jin Ling couldn't help but exclaim but his uncle paid no attention, instead opting to stare at Wei Wuxian intensely.
"Who exactly are you?"
"Aiya, it doesn't matter," Wei Wuxian waved his hand and gave a bow. "If this is your nephew, I apologize for fighting with him. I merely acted out of self defence and really mean no harm."
"You-- you destroyed my nets!"
"Well, you had PEOPLE trapped in them."
"Jin Ling, shut up for once," the man snapped and then turned to Wei Wuxian again. "Do you....know who I am?"
"Well, I can't say I remember everything," Wei Wuxian's lips twitched in a sad smile. "But you're Jiang Cheng, aren't you?"
When the man didn't respond, for the most fearful moment Wei Wuxian thought he'd perhaps mistaken him for someone else. Hastily, he bowed and turned to go. "Actually, never mind, I should--"
"Are you.....are you Wei Wuxian?"
Wei Wuxian stopped at that, strange relief flooding his heart. He hadn't known how scared he was, for some reason, that this man had forgotten him. He let out a laugh of forced cheer. "Well, now! You do remember! Wait but you can't tell it to anyone else though. It seems people still want to kill me so I go by Mo Xuanyu now-- oof!"
Jiang Cheng had suddenly rushed forward and hugged him, making him almost stumble and fall. Wei Wuxian's eyes widened as the man shuddered even through the embrace. "You....you remembered me. You remembered my name...."
"Regretfully, I remember only that day," Wei Wuxian felt his heart soften as he awkwardly patted the other on his back. "But yeah.....I haven't forgotten your name."
"That's enough," Jiang Cheng’s voice shook. "That's....that's more than enough. I've been...I've been wanting to talk to you. Tell you I'm sorry....and please come back."
"Well! You don't need to apologize! I don't remember any of your wrongdoings hahaha!" Wei Wuxian laughed and finally hugged back. His eyes stung for the strangest reason and his chest felt full despite the pain. "Really....you don't have to apologize."
Jiang Cheng shook his head, unable to speak, and just clung on to him. It made Wei Wuxian fond in a way that seemed old - familiar.
"Hey," he began, hesitantly, heart+ thudding and leaping like he was about to take a dive. "You're the one I've loved....right?"
Jiang Cheng’s hug tightened even as he took a shaky breath. After a bout of hesitation, his tear-choked soft voice reached Wei Wuxian’s ears. "Can you.....can you love me again?"
"Yeah," the answer fell out so naturally that Wei Wuxian couldn't even question it. His eyes burned and tears fell at the same time his lips rose in a smile. He was sure now, so sure for someone who didn't remember. This was the man he'd once loved. This was the man he would love again. "Yeah...yeah, I think...I think I can."

i swear this is the last fucking post i'm making about this but i find it so annoying when people act like lan wangji was very clear and open about his feelings for wei wuxian and showed his affection in ways everyone but wwx was able to pick up on, because ✨canonically✨ nobody really understood lwj and it was a generally accepted fact that he and wei wuxian were enemies. jiang cheng especially is often portrayed as exasperated by wei wuxian's continued obliviousness in the face of lan wangji's "obvious" infatuation, but the truth is that jiang cheng was as blindsided as everyone else by the truth about lwj's feelings. in fact! the one person who was always insisting that lan wangji didn't really hate wei wuxian and actually wanted to be his friend was wei wuxian himself! and it was jiang cheng who dismissed that idea as ridiculous and unwittingly elbowed wei wuxian back into the closet through his obvious disdain! common fan perception got it so backwards

I found Lilai!! My baby <3
Since I have this, I'm gonna gush about her
Lilai is born between a Yu disciple who followed Jiang Cheng in the name of the Violet Spider and a rogue cultivator who followed him during the Sunshot campaign. Her parents' love story is quite famous (or infamous, depending on the person retelling it.) Its popularity rivals the stories about Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan.
Yu MeiSi is a stoic woman, borderline emotionless and her falling for a clumsy no name rogue cultivator was a hilarity nobody saw coming. (Jiang Cheng was busy wrangling a wayward Wei Wuxian to witness the events)
After the Sunshot campaign MeiSi basically approached Gui Peng and asked him what he thinks of her. (When she first saw him she thought he was hot. No one else saw what she saw in the guy but it's love at first sight for her.) Peng, not sure why one of their best generals was asking his opinion, said that he thought she was strong and that he's honored to have fought with her in the war. MeiSi was pleased (it didn't reflect on her face) and left. After that she kept coming back to him for tea time, joined him in his errands and kept insisting that she wanted to help in the area where he was rebuilding. Hanging out with her made Peng fall for her and he later complained to his friends that she's out of his league. The response of his peers at the time being, "I thought you're already seeing each other?" (MeiSi definitely thought they were dating) Peng got a realization and in a drunken fit of confidence, asked for her hand in marriage. MeiSi accepted gracefully (in her head she thought "FINALLY!! how long should the courtship be??") They gathered everything they could for the wedding in a ruined, rebuilding sect and surprised Jiang Cheng with the request to officiate the wedding.
Jiang Cheng was teased for officiating a wedding when he wasn't married himself. When he broke this news to Yanli she told him to collect her money from Hao Fei (there's a bet between the girls on whether Peng will realize or not. The guy is very oblivious.)
The wedding between MeiSi and Peng happens then the canon plot happens, Jin Ling is born and then almost a year later Yu Lilai is born. (Her dad chose to give her the surname Yu to show her connection to a clan)
Yu Lilai is the first child born to a Jiang disciple in the Jiang clan.
She is currently the best swordswoman in her age group, as if she was born with a sword in her hand. She is considered to be a genius at it. Although it does appear as if the gods took away her ability to understand social cues in exchange. She's strong, she knows she's strong and she isn't afraid of many things, her sect leader included. Whenever the disciples want to ask their leader something (like, for example: a torture dungeon) they ask her to do it.
Jiang Cheng is exasperated about her lack of tact. (He has learned from the many many interventions he had to do between the children that she has no ill intentions. And has small to zero emotional sensitivity. Or social awareness) Small mercies, she's well mannered, polite and obedient. She's learned that asking for his permission to speak first is important to avoid offending diplomatic guests. Jiang Cheng is happy when she's racking up points for Yunmeng Jiang in cultivation conference exhibitions though.
She is often with her XinXue Shijie and Lian Shixiong. XinXue enables her bad habits and Lian made it his responsibility to dodge possible diplomatic problems made by them.
She was also Jin Ling's friend as a young child. But since Jin Ling isn't spending all of his time in the Jiang Sect, and with the new kids her age joining the sect giving her more options, they kind of just fell off. She's too oblivious to notice that this affected him. She does remember that as kids she and Jin Ling promised to marry each other.
One day, in Jin Ling's attempt to reconnect with her, he asked her to join him and his new friends on a night hunt. She offhandedly mentioned the childhood promise, wondering if they'll fulfill it now because he needs a wife. This embarrasses Jin Ling (Lan Jingyi wouldn't let him live it down) and vehemently disagrees. Yu Lilai doesn't get why it's a big deal but promises Jin Ling that she'll wait for him anyway. (Jin Ling is embarrassed but also weirdly touched)
(Whether there's actually anything there, the adults only wish they would figure it out)
Every time she emotionally compromises someone important to her, she gains a little emotional maturity. Her dad feels kind of bad about it because she definitely got it from him. Her mom consoles her husband by saying that it was cute. They are one of the Jiang Sect's weirdest families, second only to Jiang Cheng's own.

The first time Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian kiss, everyone goes wild from cheering.
Well, not first, persay.
It seems like... they've been more subtle than they expected?
And have never actually kissed in front of their friends and family?
"...guys, we've been married for like, 4 years." Wei Wuxian says as a response to his sister's congratulations.
...congratulations for finally confessing to his husband.
Did they seriously think they only got together now?
"Haha yeah very funny Wei Wuxian. Like you have the balls." Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes from where he's sitting on the counter top of their house.
Mianmian laughs, "Even if you did, you would have told us no?"
"I did tell you! SEVERAL TIMES!!!"
"You always exaggerate the littlest things A-Xian, you can't really blames us." His jie says, petting his right cheek playfully.
He's exasperated, no one believes him!
"Lan Zhan! Help me out here!" He whines to the man completely silent beside him, only the response of 'mn' coming from his mouth.
Lan Wangji removes the hand holding his waist -much to his despise- and raises Wei Wuxian's other hand with his.
Glinting in the light of their house, two very beautiful rings sit ontop of their fingers.
"We married 4 years ago."
And that is what gets them to believe it.
Honestly, they have no trust for him!

Top 5 fucked up siblings
worried that i always answer this one with the same five, because i'm p sure i've answered this before. but oh well here goes
1. Richard & Lymond (Lymond Chronicles). Somebody just posted an excerpt about them on my dash recently and got me thinking about them again. I love how pretty much every book has Lymond dragging Richard on a rollercoaster of emotion but The Game of Kings remains prime territory in that regard. Just Lymond inflicting emotional terrorism on his older brother. They're not quite as codependent as pretty much everyone else on this list (but that's a high bar); still fucked up. Lymond running away from Richard for a solid few years because a prophecy convinced him that their reuniting would kill Richard is another highlight.
2. Felix & Mildmay (Doctrine of Labyrinths). Speaking of codependent! I feel like the fact that I also put these two on the "fucked up but soft" list speaks for itself here, and also I feel like one could somewhat reasonably pitch Doctrine of Labyrinths as "fucked up siblings in secondary world fantasy: the series." it wouldn't be very informative but it would be accurate.
3. Jiang Cheng & Jiang Yanli & Wei Wuxian (MDZS/The Untamed). And I say again: speaking of codependent! I know Wei Wuxian is not actually "sibling" yes but the weird in-between role he takes is also part of what makes this dynamic so good. And what I love about these three is that you look at them together and you're like "awww they're so cute it's so tragic how they fall apart" and then you scratch a little and you're like "oh no. oh dear. you guys are a mess and your relationship dynamics are a disaster that ain't good" and then you scratch a little more and go "awww. they're so cute in their incredibly messed up codependence triangle" again. they're so tangled up in each other in this messy cobbled together structure, and none of them can walk away from each other, not really. not outside of death, certainly, and not really even then.
love that for them.
4. Ianthe & Coronabeth. Hope we get more of these two in Alecto. I support women's wrongs. Can't wait to see what happens here because I suspect it will be (a) not good and (b) fun to watch.
5. Shi Qingxuan & Shi Wudu. I wavered for a while on this one, thought about going for my old Thor and Loki standby, but decided since I feel like I've talked less about these two...I just find their relationship fascinating. Shi Wudu's overbearing paternalistic attitude toward Shi Qingxuan, particularly toward her favor of her female form but also just in general his...base assumption that he knows what's best for her and is just making sure she's taken care of. All the way down to stealing and swapping fates, which he specifically, deliberately, keeps Shi Qingxuan from knowing about. Which makes sense! because when Shi Qingxuan - fair-minded Shi Qingxuan who was so adamant about Pei Su getting a trial and not getting off lightly just because he's Pei Ming's protege - finds out what happened, she immediately rejects it. She's desperate to throw away her godhood, actively fighting her brother's attempts to "help." She's disgusted by the knowledge of how she ascended.
I figure Shi Wudu would've had some sense of how Shi Qingxuan would feel about it, but he needed to save his baby brother's life and he overturned the world to do so. Which would be sweet and touching in a world where it didn't come so horribly at the expense of someone else's life - but of course it had to.
And at the same time, for all Shi Qingxuan rolls her eyes and expresses exasperation and frustration with her brother and his behavior, she also doesn't hesitate to go to him when he's in need. Or, well, she does hesitate, but ultimately she can't stand back. For all her anger with him for what he's done, and in her name, she still loves him so much, and tries so, so hard to save him, to save them both.
And the fact, too, that Shi Wudu actively provokes He Xuan into ripping his head off rather than choose an option that will cause Shi Qingxuan inevitable suffering (though what he thought would happen afterward, I don't know)...yikes, dude, but also I'm kinda impressed.
I would not necessarily say that I like Shi Wudu most of the time. But I do find him, and the way he interacts with Shi Qingxuan in particular, very interesting. And I love thinking about how Shi Qingxuan wrestles with his death post-canon. (I wonder if Shi Qingxuan feels like she's responsible for both Scholar He's death and her brother's.)

jiang cheng sighed tiredly at the sound of an explosion, knowing from around where it was coming from. he was drowning in paperwork, and he didn't exactly have the time to investigate his disciples' latest troubles.
he was out of his office even before one of them reached it, following them back towards the training grounds where some of them were running around to extinguish the small fire that had started, others helping those who were still stunned by the explosion they had created.
a couple of them were rambling about what had happened. They had learned about this new talisman (they didn't say who made it but jc wasn't dumb, he know who made these). They wanted to test it and simply messed up the training field and it got out of hand.
These were all of the younger disciples, fidgeting and unsure if they would be punished by their sect leaders for what they did.
yet, despite how tired and exasperated jc looked, he didn't start screaming, only instructing on correctly putting out the fire.
soon he was helping those who had been affected more by the explosion, making sure no one was seriously injured, sending someone to bring the healers just in case.
they couldn't escape a scolding though, everyone looking to the ground as jc was telling them how reckless it was to test experimental talisman without more experience cultivators around and with no safety measures. this is around the time the SIC and the healer got to the training field, finding their sect leader scolding those youngsters the same way a dad would scold his children. From experience, they could see the man wasn't really mad, only worried that something bad could have had happened but also, mostly relieved that nothing bad happened.
"next time you want to play around like this come to me, I can make sure you do not blow up half of lotus pie like this".
everyone was a bit worried about doing this, especially youngsters who knew only of tales of their leaders rebuilding lotus pier after it was destroyed. They couldn't live with themselves if they forced their leader to do this again.
"And for punishment clean the training field" said jc, more for the image of giving a punishment than anything else. They would already have needed to do it anyway.
everyone confirmed it before he was able to go back to his duty, not without making sure with the healer that everyone was indeed alright.

jc thought he could go on a night hunt for once without any problems occurring, but when he heard one of his disciples saying four young men wanted to speak to him he could only sigh and allow them in.
"Sect leader jiang/jiujiu 🥺"
"What did you four did again," jc asked a bit exasperated..
he tried listening as ljy and jl were battling against each other to tell what had happened, lsz and oyz trying to calm them down. truly it was only because they were encountering something bigger than first thought and they had mishandled it a little bit due to inexperience.
despite his scowling and sighs while he was listening, anyone could see the fond look in the sect leader's eye, the quartet bringing back old memories of a duo of boys going on night hunts together and messing up sometimes.
"we heard slj was nearby too and decided it would be better to ask for help from someone more experienced and with better cultivation" lsz politely concluded as the two others were bickering on the side.
of course, jc accepted to help, not without scolding them all a little bit about not being careful enough when it comes to something unknown that turns out stronger than first thought.
at least, like that he could also show them how to properly do it for the next time this happens.

the market near lotus pier was always bustling and had truly regained from the war with the help of the yunmeng jiang sect.
everyone knew of the slj who often bought locally to help out and took strolls around to make sure everything was alright.
this meant everyone was also familiar with the four young men following him around.
some of the Marchand though didn't know much about the cultivation world and simply believed the man had probably taken under his wing that little young man.
they were all taken aback when some of them referred to jc their dad, leading to them trying to tell it was not the case.
yet jc wouldn't help when he would just act like one, scolding them when needed and giving permission around when they weren't allowed unless they were asking slj about it (some even used "your dad").
I dunno, I just like the idea of rural folks seeing how jc treats them and going "Ah, how nice for slj, he has adopted a group of energic young men, it will be good for him"

tbf, lxc is valid for noticing how one-sided is the wangxian dynamic and it's true that wwx didn't give an f about lwj in his first life... and except for some moments when he went "oh no, he's hot", lwj is the reason people ship them because that ship has no real basis on wwx's part...
In the end, it feels as if he falls for lwj only because he's literally the only one there for him. What's ironic is that he even ponders on how it used to be the other way around and he used to have jc by his side and lwj against him...
MXTX created a mess of a fandom because of all these mixed signals she gives so no wonder there are a lot of wwx / jc shippers. I mean, it's OBVIOUS that she didn't intend for jc to be a love interest at all... but she still made him "ex"-coded. The fact that he's the one wwx made a big sacrifice too for, and not lwj when, on the other hand, lwj sacrificed a couple of important things for a wwx that didn't care about him in their first life, and that won't get the same devotion in return is just. weird.

This is certainly a bad/sad understanding of the entire point of Lan Xichen's angry rantings, as the audience was supposed to be exasperated on behalf of all involved due to each one only having their own perception of this entire situation and the ongoing theme on relying on self-biased thought and perception.
Just as Lan Xichen has only his own understanding of one-sided reciprocity(on Lan Wangji's behalf), Wei Wuxian was terrified of being the only one to have thought he was taking his feelings to an inappropriate level that was not reciprocated, mind on the heels and only hours after Jiang Cheng accused them of being more and mocking Wei Wuxian.

In the time they’d been traveling together, he’d gotten the feeling Lan Wangji thought highly of him. That he thought of him differently than he once had. But at the end of the day, he didn’t dare guess how far that ��highly” stretched, nor whether “differently” really was the kind of “different” he assumed.
Wei Wuxian had never considered confidence a bad thing and was often smug and frivolous as a result. The cultivation world had once gossiped that the Yiling Patriarch was the sort who frolicked among the peach blossoms, always surrounded by the sweet smell of their fragrant flowers. Wei Wuxian reached out and brushed a hand across two figures with puckered lips kissing on the wall, before trailing up to the words “Lan Wangji was here.” The sentence needed to be cleaned away, but before Wei Wuxian did so, he traced the strokes of Lan Wangji’s name with his fingertips.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The more he traced them, the more he was loath to part.

While leaving Lan Wangji behind and freely roaming the world alone did not seem an impossible thing to consider…
...a voice deep inside Wei Wuxian told him the clear truth: It was impossible.
The nonsense he’d spouted back at Golden Carp Tower had really come true. The Wei Wuxian of today could not do without Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian has only stopped trying to rationalize (comphet) and explain away their close relation as only being friendly, he knows very well his own advances can't be explained as being a joke any longer and, doesn't want them to be seen as such especially by his own self. He is terrified of Lan Wangji seeing this as either a cruel joke or Lan Wangji not feeling the same. He wants it to be reciprocated and always has.
And within the extras we see the blatant proof, while he may not understand he was in the midst of a crush, given he was fifteen and once more, he have Jiang Cheng being nasty, he much exhibited his fixation upon Lan Wangji by mentioning him within Lotus Pier and being happy to discuss him with Jiang Yanli without the excuse of wanting to just mess around with him.

Jiang Yanli sat down between them. “Who are you two talking about?” she asked. “A friend you made at Gusu?”
"Yeah!” Wei Wuxian answered happily.
"You have the cheek to call yourself his ‘friend’?” Jiang Cheng said. “Ask Lan Wangji about that, see if he’s willing to accept you as one.”
"Screw off. If he doesn’t, I’ll just pester him—we’ll see if he caves.” Turning to Jiang Yanli, Wei Wuxian asked, “Shijie, do you know Lan Wangji?”
Yes,” Jiang Yanli said. “He’s the second young master of the Lan Clan, the one everyone says is very handsome and capable, right? Is he really very handsome?”
"Very!” Wei Wuxian gushed.
"Compared to you?” Jiang Yanli probed.
Wei Wuxian thought for a moment. “Perhaps just a tiny bit more handsome than me.”
He held two of his fingers a tiny distance apart to demonstrate. As Jiang Yanli collected the plates, she smiled.
"Then he must be really very handsome. It’s a good thing to make new friends. You guys can drop in on each other to have some fun in the future, when you have nothing to do.”
For the very next extra to make good on this, almost 20 years later and Wei Wuxian to admit he had always wanted Lan Wangji's attentions romantically and poking at Lan Wangji seemingly not sharing that interest, that was dispelled as soon as both were able to out their shared romantic love.

He turned his head and said to Lan Wangji, “When I was at the Cloud Recesses way back then, I kept urging you to come visit Lotus Pier. I especially wanted you to come with me to steal lotus seed pods from him. Do you know why?”
When it came to Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji always answered every one of his questions and acquiesced to all his requests. And so, he answered him seriously, “I do not know. Why?”
Wei Wuxian winked at him and snickered. “Because that old man sure was something whenever he hit people with his boat-pole. It hurt way more than your family’s disciplinary ferule. I thought I just had to trick Lan Zhan into coming here and let him take a few beatings too.”
Lan Wangji smiled slightly at this. The cold glow of the moonlight on the lake melted at the sight.
In that instant, Wei Wuxian felt dizzy. A smile also unconsciously rippled its way onto his face.
"All right, I admit—” he began.

Amid smiles and laughter, they grabbed hold of each other and embraced in the water before exchanging a kiss.
After their lips parted, Wei Wuxian raised his hand and continued their earlier topic of conversation. “I admit it, I was talking nonsense. I just wanted to hang out with you back then.”
Lan Wangji lifted him from behind, and Wei Wuxian clambered back onto the boat. He looked back and held out a hand to grab Lan Wangji.
“So tell me honestly, Lan Zhan.”
Lan Wangji got on the boat and handed him a red cord. “Of what?”
Wei Wuxian held the red cord with his mouth as he pulled back his hair, which had come loose in the water. “Tell me if you felt the same way,” he said solemnly. “You know, your callous rejection of me every single time I asked really made me lose face
back then.”
"You can try and see if I would deny you anything now,” Lan Wangji said.
The unexpected statement hit him right in the heart. Wei Wuxian choked for a moment, but Lan Wangji was still as composed as ever, like he didn’t fully grasp the weight of what he had just said.
Pressing his palm to his forehead, Wei Wuxian said, “You… Hanguang-jun, let’s agree that you’ll give me a heads-up before you say sweet nothings in the future. Otherwise, I won’t be able to take it.”
Lan Wangji nodded. “All right.”
"Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian said, “Oh, you…!”
Of all the millions of possible words, there was nothing left to say. There was only laughter and hugs.
As for Jiang Cheng, yes he is jealous, yes he is a homophobe, no there is no mixed signals from Wei Wuxian to anyone other than Lan Wangi. Me, unlike you, understand what logical comprehension is and can read what MXTX meant for her CP. Have fun with your salty Jiang Cheng/Chengxian fic ideas though, save that energy for that instead of bugging me.

Spent the afternoon filling a prompt for wwxfans prompt fest from @/dragongirlg-fics asking for young wwx being obsessed with the texture of the clothes he gets to wear now that he's a part of the Jiang Sect.

This got a little away from me, but I really enjoyed the prompt and got in my feels about wwx and clothes and also wwx sharing clothes. This is mostly wwx with jc & jyl, but with a bit of post-canon wangxian at the end.

"What are you doing?" Jiang Cheng asks, brows furrowed while shijie frowns at him. She admonishes him with a quiet, "A-Cheng, shush," and smiles at Wei Ying, brighter than the sunshine sparkling off the water. She asks, gesturing at his wrists, "Do you like them?"
"What do I like?"
Her eyes twinkle. "Your robes."
Before Wei Ying can answer, Jiang Cheng says, "They're my old robes."
"Just until Wei Ying's are finished," shijie says, like this is such an awkward thing, but Wei Ying truly doesn't mind. Even if they were not his first, it's been made clear they are his now and they're nice, so much nicer than what he wore before. Besides, he kind of likes that they were Jiang Cheng's first. It just means they've been well-cared for and can maybe care for Wei Ying in return.
Wei Ying, caught, tucks his hands behind his back and grins back. Here, the boldness of such an expression doesn't find him getting chased off the street and into a stinking, dirty alley, shadowed even at midday. He is still getting used to it, the way he need only fear the near impotent shouts of one person, so much less stressful than anything he experienced before. If he's punished here, at least he won't be made to leave the shelter of Lotus Pier. He would suffer anything to avoid such a state again. "They're fine," he mumbles.
And truly, he does not suffer here at all. As shijie leads the two of them to the docks, he can't say he remembers ever being happier.
In fact...
"Oh, they're fine. Something's got to be wrong with them. You keep touching them," Jiang Cheng says, accusatory and suspicious as he crosses his arms and blocks Wei Ying's way. "Is there something wrong with them?" Wei Ying can almost see Jiang Cheng's pride ruffling itself at the thought that Wei Ying might think there's anything wrong. "You have something against them?"
Wei Ying's skin flushes. His carefully brushed and tidied hair tickles at his cheeks as he shakes his head, startling him. Always before, it stuck to his skin, lank and heavy. He's not yet used to wearing it in a ponytail. He's not yet used to any of this. "No. Nothing's wrong. They're great."
"Your belt is crooked." The trouble with his belt is it's too big, but nothing can fix that overnight, not with how thin he is.
Drawing in a deep breath, Wei Ying scrambles to fix--
There's nothing wrong with his belt, but it's too late to hide his hands again; Jiang Cheng's already snatching hold of his wrist and dragging him forward.
"A-Cheng!" shijie says again, voice gently exasperated. "Enough. Let A-Ying go."
"Tsch." Jiang Cheng's mouth pinches in a scowl. "They're fine. Why are you being so weird?"
"I'm not," Wei Ying insists. He yanks his hand out of Jiang Cheng's hold and pets the fabric wrapped around his arm. Unlike what he wore before, it's soft and smooth and smells nice. He likes touching it, likes that it shines under the sunlight and that the weave is so tiny that he can't pick and pick at the threads until the fabric frays, likes that it keeps him cool and swishes around his legs and is such deep, rich colors. When winter comes, he's certain he'll like whatever is provided for him then, too. It will protect him from the cold and the sleety rain that sometimes falls or keep him warm and dry or both. "I said they were fine."
Jiang Cheng's clearly not convinced. He plants his hands on his hips and arches one eyebrow. "You're a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang now. You can't walk around acting like a baby who doesn't know how to wear clothes."
"I know that."
"A-Ying, you're not a baby." Shijie's not that much taller than him, but she bends a little to meet him eye-to-eye and tugs on his clothing, settling the seams over his shoulders, smoothing the sleeves, lingering on the hems as Wei Ying's done. "A-Cheng, A-Ying is still adjusting."
Wei Ying bites his lower lip to keep it from wobbling. He's not the type to cry, has never been that way, but his eyes prickle anyway. Jiang Cheng's right. This behavior isn't worthy of the chance he's been given. He owes Uncle Jiang so much and the last thing in the world he wants is to embarrass Madam Yu.
"Tell me," shijie says.
"It feels nice," he admits, running his thumb over the fabric one last time. "I never..."
Her smile gentles, drawing the answer from him like so much poison.
"I've never worn anything this nice before," Wei Ying says. "That's all." Shijie's right. He's not used to any of this. It's almost a compulsion, his need to stroke the fabric. It's so soft and comfortable compared to what he wore before. How could he not want to touch it as often as possible? It's lucky Jiang Cheng hasn't noticed the way he sometimes presses his face to it after he's washed up and changed into his night clothes.
He should... not do that anymore. Jiang Cheng is right. It's unbecoming.
Squaring his shoulders, he looks at Jiang Cheng and then at shijie. He can't find the right words, but he promises that he won't make things difficult. If pretending he doesn't care about what he's wearing is what he needs to do, he will.
For the most part, he succeeds in hiding his preoccupation, though it never fully goes away. Even into adulthood, he rarely pays much attention to the different sensation different sets of robes make him feel.
The second time he's caught, it's because he's slipped into one of his husband's inner robes after, well... after, audaciously nude beneath the silken fabric, not even his trousers separating him from the tender brush of fabric over his heated skin, and Lan Zhan is watching him placidly from the bed as he gasps in quiet, simple pleasure. Though a frisson of shame bubbles up from within him--will he ever fully leave his past behind him and the memory of coarse, itchy rags that barely covered his body appropriately--he shoves it down and tells himself it would be more improper to retrieve a cloth without any clothes on at all.
"Don't look at me, shameless man," Wei Wuxian says as he clutches the robes closed. He is teasing, of course, and he is not. Next time, he'll keep his own close at hand, save himself the trouble.
"Why not?" Lan Zhan asked, teasing him right back.
He doesn't have it in him to explain, but when he can bring himself to meet Lan Zhan's eyes, there is no request for one there, only the same simple joy Wei Wuxian had felt in donning Lan Zhan's clothes to begin with. There is no one in this room he needs to impress, no one who will look down on him for enjoying something that everyone around him can and does take for granted.
"Because," is all he says.
Within a few days, Lan Zhan's ordered sets of robes for him in fabrics that more closely align the ones the Lan Sect sources, all in the shades Wei Wuxian favors, of course, but just as luxurious. All Lan Zhan says on the matter once they're properly put away is, "I should have considered the matter sooner."
On occasion, he still chooses to wear his husband's things.
Ever since he was small, he's always rather liked it, sharing such things with those he cares about.

3zuncheng where the politically savvy and newly isolated young leader of Yunmeng Jiang embarks on sexual relationships with each of the venerated triad separately, hoping to cement political stability for his sect.
Everything’s going great until the first discussion conference at Yunmeng Jiang, when they’re all waiting around after the feast for the other two to go to bed so they can spirit their lover away to his rooms.
It’s getting later and later and they’re all throwing the side eye at each other and dropping hints that the others are looking tired or have drunk enough. Jiang Cheng doesn’t realise what’s happening of course - thinking they wouldn’t risk joining him tonight with the others there and they’re all just being good bros to each other.
They're all so stubborn though, and once they've committed that amount of time to waiting, it would be stupid to waste it by giving in. And besides, it's been a while since any of them were with Jiang Cheng, preparing for travelling to Yunmeng was timeconsuming for all the sect leaders, so they're fuelled by horny and the thought of the very pretty Jiang-zongzhu naked and welcoming them into his bed.
It get's so late that eventually clueless, and incredibly annoyed Jiang Cheng gives them the 'ight Imma head out' because he has a sect to run, and can't sit up drinking all night just because none of the 3zun know when to take a hint and retire.
This is the point at which the 3zun are all sat there slack mouthed and disbelieving, are they really going to miss their chance of *cough* intimacy with their lover, just because their idiot sworn brothers won't take a hint and go to bed?
But what's this? Jiang Cheng throws a final, exasperated look over his shoulder.
3zun fuelled by horny: Was that a come hither look? He's summoning me to his rooms after they've all gone to sleep.
Cue various exaggerated yawns and stretches and "Oh is that the time?"'s and a mad dash by the three to their respective accommodations.
Except of course it's impossible for three grown men to try to sneak into the same man's room without bumping into each other... And what excuse could there possibly be? I heard a noise? I got lost fetching a drink of water?
JGY, without a doubt the quickest at spotting a scheme (takes one to know one) soon twigs onto what's happening, and explains to his sworn brothers that they might be sharing more than they initially suspected.
But that's also fine; sharing is caring, after all.
And now that this is all out in the open all three are in full agreement; Jiang-zongzhu is about to get quite a lot more than he bargained for, or certainly at once.
