For how much Machete is described by others as off-putting, he really is a beautiful dog. Does Vasco ever tell him so? That his eyes make him look earnest, his fur the most comforting shade of white like cream, the way his ears catch light like stained glass? I think Vasco definitely tries, sincerely and often, but Machete is very reluctant to accept compliments and positive feedback. Especially if it's about something as personal and innate as his looks.

#he quietly spends a lot of time and effort trying to make himself look his best so appearances aren't a trivial thing for him #he's always very clean and neat and presentable #except on those occasions when he's soaked in blood but that's totally besides the point #white fur is kind of high maintenance any tiny bit of dirt or staining becomes an eyesore and if it dries it may be hard to remove #he bathes very frequently way more than average considering the time period #some of the outfits he wears are worth more than the combined lifetime earnings of like six generations of his family #silk was outrageously expensive and the brightest red dye came from pulverized cochineal insects that had to be imported from America #which had been colonized less than a century ago so those tiny little cactus bugs were really troublesome to get and the demand was huge #he doesn't quite have the nerve to wear perfume despite it's widespread popularity at the time #but he makes sure the smell of frankincense burned during church services sticks to his fur and clothes #in general when you spend your entire life around strict emotionally congested highly religious men #you might not end up developing a very healthy self-esteem or body image #once you've internalized that sense of inferiority it's hard to unlearn it #he's so thirsty for approval and praise but when he receives some he immediately gets uncomfortable and distrustful and vaguely angry #he absolutely struggles to compliment people back as well at least on any meaningful and personal level so there's that #answered #anonymous #Machete

At first it started as it starts with any child. Wanting to test the limits of the rules and then he noticed it annoyed some adults. They can’t tell him to just swear :3. So he kept it. I think it’s fascinating that katara says “then you didn’t love her the way i did.” there’s a double meaning there. there’s “you didn’t love her as much as i did,” which is a hurtful thing to say, regardless of whether or not it’s true. but then there’s also, “we don’t love her the same way.” which is true. they clearly love their mother differently. it’s not a matter of more, it’s a matter of how. kya birthed them, literally, but her death was also a rebirth for both of them. her sacrifice shaped their respective identities.

katara loves her mother as the site of her creation myth. she wears the memory of what kya did for her around her neck, desperate to prove herself and be the hero she needs to see in the world. sokka sees that in katara, her drive to create change out of this formative injustice, but he also sees the price of it, and shapes himself into the new sacrifice necessary for katara’s hero’s journey. if katara sees kya as her legacy, as her creator who she must honor and avenge, sokka sees kya as his fate, as his inevitable future born of an inexorable past.

who can say which child loved their mother more. but how they loved her, and how they grieve her… well. their modes of mourning differ based on the roles they see fit to inhabit and the narratives created by their formative traumas. katara’s duty is to remember: kya’s absence is physical, she wears it around her neck, her mourning is an act of creation. sokka’s duty is to repress: he forgets his [mother’s] face as he neglects and sublimates his own. consider how frustrating it must be for katara that sokka refuses to speak of her defining, mythmaking event, that he copes with own fate by attempting to ignore it. so there certainly is a difference there, in how they choose to honor kya’s memory. what katara said may have been hurtful, but it wasn’t entirely wrong.

one of the lesser talked about fun things about intentionally reading more books is finding new stuff to be a bit of a hater about tbh

#and i know sometimes im probably just not properly picking up whatever the writer is putting down but whatever it's still fun #to actually know what you think about stuff like the highly regarded classics and extremely popular hyped up things #here are a few writers im a bit of a hater about w my opinions now btw #neil gaiman: does not do it for me at alllll #have read the graveyard book and american gods and hated almost every minute of both #in american gods i just found the aesthetic ideas and characters completely unappealing and in the graveyard book #i thought it was dreary and not well described enough... kept feeling like it was too bare bones in some way to picture things properly #i was like 'hmm i wish this was one of his graphic novels instead bc i'd like to be able to see what's going on here a bit better...' #also his humour just never lands for me and i do not often get his references either #ray bradbury annoys me in a similar way to neil gaiman but also somewhat oppositely like where #the way they write characters and plots and ideas and the stuff they care about gets on my nerves in an almost identical way #that i don't know how to define except to say i had a bit of a 'same energy' experience reading Something Wicked This Way Comes #and some of neil gaiman's stuff #but unlike neil gaiman i think that ray bradbury attempts to describe things unusually so much and TOO much #to the point that it takes me out of the story in a different yet similar way #to how the lack of description in neil gaiman's stuff does #what else have i become a bit of a hater about or did not get the appeal of lately? hmmm #oh hp lovecraft hahahaha #least scary stories ever god everything he's scared of is so dumb #like even aside from his extremely racist takes and fear of the 'exotic other' his fears about being cosmically insignificant are just like #yeah and? whats so scary about that hahaha i literally just dont get it #also the amount he writes dialogue in heavy accents annoys the shit out of me #p
