please tell me everything you know about the chao garden i've been hyperfixated on Sonic for the past two months and would like to know everything

here let me paraphrase a beginner's guide to expanded chao knowledge

infinite animals: the chao gardens have probably the easiest useful glitch to perform in any game ever. in fact, the game nigh doesn't meet its full potential unless you know this glitch and is more like a gameplay element. basically you can take any animal, line yourself up with the chao and place the animal down right in front of it without actually giving it to the chao, and it'll absorb the stats from the animal and you can use the animal again. most people who've gotten into the game probably know this glitch because it's so easy and common. plus, because there are required emblems achieved by beating races, players probably learn the glitch in order to get those faster. the glitch is technically easier to do in sadx because the animal stays in place when you do the glitch, whereas in sa2b, the animal flies a short distance away from you. you can also technically do this glitch with chaos drives (or as I still habitually call them, 'crystals') in sa2b, but they raise stats in such low amounts and their physics are so floaty they're not really worth it.

secondary evolutions: after evolving a chao from a baby to an adult, as they age, they gradually start changing form again and this form is determined by a secondary stat. they don't technically evolve again, but if you have a swim chao and raise up its fly stats at this point, it'll shift into a variation of itself that can change at any time by simply raising a different stat. you can do this with any type and any stat. with three 'alignments' (neutral, hero, dark), five types (swim, fly, run, power, normal), and five more secondary types (swim, fly, run, power, normal), that gives you 75 different possible forms, and this isn't including numerous possible 'combination' forms that would happen by only changing them halfway between forms. these secondary evolution forms tend to be the most visible when their age is 4.

breeding starter chao: pretty much every real 'chao recipe' that exists in this game is done by using the starter chao (the ones you get when you go into a garden for the first time). you can breed them with any flat color chao that you buy, normal or shiny, to get a 'starter chao version' of that color, otherwise known as a two-tone chao. there are 15 flat colors and 15 shinies in the game, meaning 30 possible two-tone variations.

tiny chao garden: the tiny chao garden's practical use is pretty much that it lets you get jewel chao (besides gold and silver) if you have a gba adaptor. yeah, you can actually play it if you want to, but given how much easier it is to raise chao in 3D sonic, you're pretty much gonna just farm rings (and cry) in it. you can use the chao they give you or you can transfer one of your own into it. you have two minigame options depending on the version, meaning if you're trying to get jewel chao, you're going to be playing these games… a lot. there are versions that come with certain gba sonic games, but if you plug an empty gba in, you can still play it. jewel chao types range from 500 to 20,000 rings in cost. in my past experience, the least tedious minigame was the no-cartridge sadx selection of minigames. you can also use the tiny chao garden to transfer chao from sadx to sa2b and vice versa, but only if you have a 2D sonic that has the tiny chao garden built into it.

shiny jewel chao: I don't think jewel chao are actually intended to have an effect on breeding due to their inconsistent results, but they do. if you breed them with some form of shiny chao specifically, you can get results that vary from translucent chao, chao that are just existing shiny two-tones but are made with the wrong colors and invisible chao (which I'm pretty sure are a bug). there's only one unique chao shiny two-tone that you can get this way, which is by breeding a shiny pink and a jewel. I grew up knowing this chao to be called a carribean chao because of its colors.

hats: in case you had no idea how to get your chao to wear stuff on its head in sa2b, that's what skeleton animals are for.

ring tricks: these two games store their rings in their main game save file and store the chao in a separate chao garden file. if you have two memory cards, you can copy the save of the main game onto the other card, make a hefty purchase in the chao garden, delete the sonic save file on the original memory card and copy it back over from the other to get your rings back while keeping whatever you purchased because it was saved in the chao garden.

letter stats: every chao is born with a list of letter stats, which determines the multiplier by which their stat increases when they level up. in sa2b, you can check these by just taking them to the doctor, but in sadx, you have to figure them out yourself by checking how much their stats go up when they first level up. if you forgot to check, you can just divide their current stat total by the level they're at to see the rate at which they're increasing. anything that's increasing at a rate of 21 or higher per level-up is in pretty good shape and is a B or higher. A is the highest stat a chao can be born with at random (without breeding, because chao can inherit stats from the parent chao), which increases at around 24 or 25 per level. if it has an A stat, you'll probably want to evolve it into the corresponding type in order to increase it to an S, which is the highest letter stat. once they evolve, it'll adopt a higher multiplier of 28-ish per level or higher. if the chao's stats are increasing slowly at a rate between 11-13, it has an E stat, which is the worst one. if your chao reincarnates, you'll have an opportunity to evolve it again, so you can raise another letter stat. I've seen people say "stats are pretty important, so if you want to know them, you may want to consider transferring them to sa2b from sadx in order to find them out" but recently I think it's pretty fun to calculate them yourself.

in the process of making this post I also ended up learning that apparently luck is a real hidden stat in sa2b which APPARENTLY is raised at a doubled rate if you use chaos drives. which… might explain why I tend to have awful luck in races in that game, if that's a thing.

you jolt up at the sound of your apartment doorbell. you have no idea who the hell is calling for you in the middle of the night, but at least it distracts you from your restlessness.

you open the door a crack. “who’s th一”

it takes a second for you to recognize the tall man in a dark hoodie standing in front of you. the dimness makes it hard to see his figure or his features, until you realize that they look all too familiar...

you immediately you throw the door open and sink into yeonjun’s arms. you sob into his chest, your body shuddering from the force of your tears, and he holds you even more tightly as his own tears stream down his face.

“i missed you,” he says, his voice hoarse. you haven’t heard the sound of his voice in weeks, and it only makes you cry even harder.

eventually your sobs calm down to quieter tears, and when you let go of yeonjun you can still see the tear tracks running from his eyes. with your hands still in his, you tug him inside the warmth of your apartment, and there he pulls you into his embrace once more.

“how did you...” you begin, your voice muffled into his hoodie.

“i snuck out.”

“you shouldn’t have...”

yeonjun kisses the top of your head once, then twice, then again and again. his kisses are feather-light and you sigh at his touch. “i love you,” he murmurs into your hair. “i n-never stopped loving you. i don’t一 i can’t do any of this without you. i miss you so much...”

your arms are around his waist and you give it a gentle squeeze. he rubs circles down your back and you hum. his touch sends waves of calm through your body, the heaviness you once carried slowly leaving you.

you recall the red carpet photos you were just looking at and your bliss is interrupted by a million questions. does anyone else know that he’s here? what happens when his agency finds out? or when his fans find out? are you really getting back together or does he just miss you? how would you even navigate the tabloids, the endless stream of gossip? you try to bury yourself even more in yeonjun’s arms but he doesn’t miss the quickening of your heartbeat.

your thoughts are interrupted by another kiss on your head. yeonjun moves you to the foot of your bed and cradles you as you both sit there, a hand making its way through the tangle of your hair. your arms perch around his neck and you nuzzle into him.

Some netizens believe it and some don’t, some hated her for touching his shoulder and some didn’t care. Y/n went live to debunk the rumors, saying she wasn’t interested in a relationship at the time. The thing was, the rumors were true. She secretly was pursing Kim Gyuvin, or at least she wanted to. you said you've been a kuro fan since 2009, I have to know what got you into the series and what has made you stay with it for so long?

what about the fandom did you enjoy back in the old days?

Ahahaha, oh wow, these questions feel loaded. Thank you for asking them, though, I haven't fully considered them before...

I'll start with the second question, because it's easier to answer. What did I enjoy about the fandom in the old days? I didn't enjoy the fandom in the old days! Not on the whole, at least. I was just on the outskirts of it, more observer than participant. I wrote fanfiction, but most people didn't read it because it wasn't romantic. The memes weren't funny, the shipping wars were insane, and SebaCiel was completely unavoidable. The current fandom is way better than the old one! (I'm sure there were cool people around back then too, but I didn't go looking for them because I didn't think they existed.)

I kind of started dipping my toes in the fandom water in 2012 in the midst of the Campania arc. But even then, by 2014 I felt a little meh from all the cricket and I varied in my interest during Green Witch, so I really didn't participate much until around 2017. The Blue Cult stuff had me bored, but then when things started ramping up towards the twin reveal, I was back in the game. Or rather, in the game for the first time. The explosion of actual good memes had me hook, line, and sinker.

Now for your first question. My initial exposure to Kuroshitsuji was season 1 of the anime. It had wrapped in Japan less than a year ago, and my sister told me that she sort of liked it after seeing the first few episodes at our high school's anime club. She gave me a brief rundown of the premise and I guess the seventeen-year-old me was interested because I went to anime club for the first and last time next week. It was the episode with the corset scene and I was appalled. I was also appalled by my peers, because the teacher hadn't shown up that day to moderate, so a lot of kids were making out and drawing on each others' bodies with sharpies, and the few people watching the episode were wolf-whistling and clapping. It was a lot for a dweeby little goodie-two-shoes to take in.

But for some reason I persevered and watched the rest of the series on my own time. The first episode also appalled me. I think the whole show did. I don't really know why I watched it, other than perhaps a fascination with historical anime, but I definitely found Sebastian and Ciel worthy of parody, because a few months later, I was writing fanfiction about them. In high school, I wrote solely humor fanfics, and they were always about Sebastian and Ciel trying to make each other's lives worse through japes and antics.

Then in early college, I started reading the manga when I caught wind of Sebastian being "dead" and thought that sounded like an interesting development. I gave the earlier chapters a try and shocker, it was so much better than the anime (though I skipped the curry arc for some reason, only read it for the first time like a year ago). Then I got to the Circus arc scene where Sebastian has to help Ciel with his eyepatch strings and I felt the epiphany grow. Dadbastian is love, Dadbastian is life, etc. It was hard not to feel like a one-man army at the time, but a handful of others enjoyed the concept too.

And then the Campania arc happened and I was absolutely gobsmacked by how good it was. I will never forget what it was like to be there for the badass Lizzie reveal. That day, anime and manga fansites and subgroups across the net were all united in Lizzie love. It was so real 🥹😭

Moments like that kept me going, as well as a hope for small Dadbastian-esque moments and the promise of more Victorian flair. Over time, I've only gained more appreciation for the side characters and the themes, and I love the current fandom to pieces, so even though the story is slow, I'm more invested than ever.

Three days wasn’t enough but it was better then nothing is how Taehyung saw it. He wanted to be with her for at least a week but his manager told him that was impossible. He had a tour and even though he loves Armies, he just wanted some time with Y/N. In the three days they had, they went on dates or they had sex at her apartment. What else can a person want? It was perfect until Nikki walked in on him eating her out, that ruined the whole romantic aura. 

Saying goodbye was hard. He knew Y/N was upset because she couldn’t go with him to the airport, their last goodbye was in their apartment. She tried her best not to cry but he saw her tearing up and it broke his heart. The two cuddled for the final hours and kissed before he walked out of her door. It was sweet but sad. 

On the flight to Japan, Taehyung was stuck in his thoughts. His thoughts were clouded with Namjoon and this whole mess. The fact that he was too chicken to tell Y/N that he loved her and he didn’t know when he would see her again. It was a lot of emotions to feel especially when you're by yourself. When the plane landed, he had to force a smile or look relatively okay. He didn’t want to worry the fansites that were waiting for him. He couldn’t afford more rumors. When it was spread that he was going to New York, people were confused. He had a concert in Japan, what business did he have in New York? The answer they gave out was it was private business. It was annoying that people wanted to know what he was doing 24/7 but he couldn’t be shocked. He was an idol, a famous idol at that. 

He walked into the hotel with his staff showing him his room in a rush. The hotel staff were trying to take pictures of him and they didn’t want people saying the small hickies on his neck. He walked into his room and smiled when he saw Jimin waiting for him with food spread out on his table, “Welcome back!~” 

Taehyung smiled at him and gave him a peace sign, “I didn’t want to come back but here I am.”

Jimin gave him a hurt look and let out a small gasp, “You wanted to leave me. Why because you were fucking Y/N?”

“Why would you think that?” 

“You have that glow of getting your dick wet.” 

Taehyung rolled his eyes and rolled his bag near his bed. He took off his jacket and tossed it on the bed, “What’s been going on while I was gone?” 

“The usual...well.” 

“Well, what?” 

Jimin took out his phone and handed his phone to him, “There’s a K-pop news page that tweeted out that armies saw you with Y/N. Holding hands and kissing...so far, the company doesn’t see it as a threat to anything because it's not a popular account. People just think it's people talking out of their asses but Namjoon saw it and wasn’t happy about it.” 

Taehyung took the phone and raised his eyebrow at the tweet, “I mean there are no pictures attached so that makes me feel better...why is Namjoon upset?” 

“He thinks you're just doing shit without thinking.”

Taehyung rolled his eyes and handed his phone back to Jimin, “I was covered up and no one came up to me. If they saw me, so what? I’m an adult and I’m allowed to date.” 

“No one is saying you can’t...we just want you to be careful. I don’t want to see Y/N get hurt.” 

“She won’t get hurt...what did the others say?” 

“Everyone just agreed we didn’t want to see Y/N get hurt. Namjoon is just upset...” 

Taehyung sighed and sat on the bed with a frown, “What should I do?”

“Talk to him in the morning. Don’t fight.”

“I won’t fight...I think.” 

Jimin sighed and sat on his bed, “Taehyung, no fighting. Please.” 

“I won’t.” Unless he starts one.

Taehyung wasn’t nervous like how he usually is meeting his leader in private. He felt more annoyed. He understands that he would be upset if he was ruining the group's image or something but he wasn’t. There were no pictures of him with Y/N so it was just a brainless rumor (even though the rumor was true, no one needed to know that). He couldn’t tell if Namjoon was upset with the group or if he was upset because he was with Y/N. 

He knocked on the door and heard a low “come in”. He opened the door to see Namjoon sitting on his bed watching his tv. Taehyung let out a sigh and rubbed the back of his neck, “Joon, you wanted to see me?” 

Namjoon muted the television and looked at him with a small smile, “Hey, I just wanted to talk to you.” 

Taehyung nodded his head and walked deeper into the room with the door closing behind him. Sealing his fate. He sat in the chair in the corner as Namjoon sat across from him. The quietness in the room was making him uncomfortable but he didn’t want to say anything. He didn’t want to start the conversation on whatever he wanted to talk about. Namjoon sighed and leaned forward a bit, “Tae, there are rumors of you with Y/N.” 

“There were no pictures, it's just pointless words.” 

Namjoon shook his head and looked at Taehyung with a serious look, “It’s not rumors though, it's the truth. You can’t just walk around like you’re not famous.” 

“I was covered up...listen no matter what I do, they're going to follow me or make rumors up. I just want to live my life.” 

“You can live life-”

“Apparently I can’t. Y/N was covered, no one saw her.”

Namjoon sighed with frustration and leaned back in his chair, “You don’t understand...you can ruin her life.”

“I can ruin her life, how?” 

“You're famous...she’s not.” 

“That doesn’t matter, I’ll protect her. I love her and she loves me.” At least I hope she does...

Namjoon stared at Taehyung with a sharp look but Taehyung didn’t look away, “Look-”

“No, you look.” Taehyung stood up from his chair and looked down at his leader with a heated look, “I don’t know if you're doing this because you like her or something but you can’t just tell me I’m going to ruin her life and expect me to be okay with you.”

“I meant it from-”

“Are you doing this because you want to be with her?” The silence in the room made Taehyung chuckle and shook his head, “Are you fucking serious?” 

“Taehyung, I’m not doing this-”

“Then answer my fucking question. Are you doing this because you want to be with her?” 

“I’m doing this because I want you guys to be safe.”

Taehyung shook his head and clenched his fist, “You're still not answering my question...Namjoon, please. Just be honest with me.” 

Namjoon sighed and looked down at the carpet. This was all Taehyung needed to see. He walked out of the room but before he left the room, he turned around and looked at Namjoon with a glare, “She’s my partner. Respect that.” and with that, he left the room. 

He didn’t go back to his room but instead, he went straight to the hidden park behind the hotel. He went to a bench and let out a deep sigh, he wanted to smoke really bad but he wasn’t going to do that. He took his phone out and called the one person he needed to talk to, “Tae, is everything okay?” 

“Baby...we need to talk...I can’t hide this from you anymore. It’s about Namjoon.” 

“Did you guys get in a fight again? Was it about me?”

Taehyung sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, “Yeah...it was.”

“Did I do something to make him hate me? I was always kind to him and even brought him cakes whenever I had leftovers.”

I wish he hated you, that conversation would’ve been easier, “That’s the thing, baby...”

He heard a confused laugh on the other side and he could picture her eyebrows going down as her nose scrunchies up, “What’s the thing?” 

“He doesn’t hate you.”

“Oh? Then what’s-”

“He likes you.” The silence was unbearable for him and he stood up from the bench. He rubbed his neck in a nervous manner, “Baby? Are you okay?” 

“I-I’m shocked...I don’t know what to say. Is this why you guys have been fighting?” 

“Yeah. I just don’t know what to do about this because I’m crazy for you and he's my leader.” 

He heard her sigh on the other end but it wasn’t relieving any stress, “What are we going to do? I don’t want you to keep fighting with him. You guys are brothers and have been through so much together. Don’t let me ruin that.”

“I don’t know what to do. I have never been through this before and I don’t think Google can help me.”

“What did you guys get into a fight about today?” 

Taehyung looked down at his shoes and kicked a rock as he sighed to himself, “There was this Twitter account that basically started rumors that I was with my partner. There were no pictures so no one believed it so don’t worry about it. He said I was going to ruin your life because I’m famous...”

“You made my life better...don’t think otherwise. I hate that people talk about you, it’s your life you should be able to do whatever you want.” 

“That’s the life of an idol, baby. I made your life better?” 

“Of course you did...you made me happier and I couldn’t ask for a better person in my life.” 

He felt his heart flutter at this confession and he wanted to kiss her at this moment, “You made my life better too. What are we going to do?” 

“I’m not sure. What did you do with your ex?”

“Oh, baby...that’s a story to tell...” 

“Did something similar happen when you were with them?”

“No...actually Namjoon was the one that helped me break up with them. Well, it was him and Yoongi that caught her cheating on me.” 

He heard a small gasp and he let out a small chuckle, “You were cheated on!?”

“Yeah with my best friend but this all happened when I first debuted so I didn’t have media attention. This is the first time I'm going through something like this.” 

“I mean there were no pictures so that's good for us but with Namjoon...I have no idea. You should talk to Yoongi, I feel like he would give the best advice on what to do.” 

“I’ll do that...Y/N, I...”

“Yes, Tae?”

“I’ll talk to you tonight.”

“I’ll talk to you tonight, bye ~.” 

He pressed the red button and let out a frustrated sigh, “It’s not time to tell her...with everything going on, it doesn’t feel right.” When will it be the right time to tell her?

Taehyung went back to her hotel room and closed the door. He leaned against the door with his eyes closed trying to figure out his thoughts. He shook his head and went towards his bed with his shoulders slumped down. He sat on the bed and took his phone out, pure annoyance came through. Hands down, LGC Spring Boys has been the most memorable project he has been a part of, which shouldn't be shocking to anyone. He knows that he still lacks a lot in skill and experience, but performing is what he lives for, what excites him to no end. If he could be on stage without any roadblocks, you wouldn't hear him complaining. He still remembers how his hand trembled so much during his turn to speak. ( No, you can't bring up that he cried during the concert. ) However, he could go without the post-concert depression. That hit him hard.

Were you watching that 70s show when it was premiering on tv? I ask because I wonder what the audience reception was to Jackie and Hyde getting together in season 5. Was it excitement or confusion etc. I know by the end of the show their relationship was a favorite amongst fans but was it that way from the beginning?

I did watch T7S when it originally aired. I also, many years later, became co-moderator of Fan Forum's recently-closed T7S message board, which was active very early into T7S's original run.

My interest in T7S waned a bit in S4, but once I saw the promo for "Going to California" (5x01), I was super excited. I shipped J/H hard, and "Jackie Bags Hyde" (3x08) ended their arc as far as anyone knew. The show became a must-watch for me, and my friends knew not to call me during that half-hour. 😅

People on the T7S message board had shipped J/H from season 1 (I started shipping after seeing "Kelso's Serenade" in season 2). The original ship name for J/H was *Hide (Hyde) and Seek* before the episode "Catfight Club" (S2), which is such a significant episode for J/H's development, provided *Zenmasters*.

When promos for "Going to California" aired, fandom went crazy with happiness. A lot of J/H fics had already been written in the years before season 5. So, yeah, J/H was shipped almost from the beginning of T7S by a lot of fans.

Then a shipping war started between Eric/Donna shippers and J/H shippers (like, what?!). Seems to have stemmed originally from E/D fans not understanding or liking how much fandom focus there was on J/H once they were finally together in S5 -- and J/H fans essentially shoving that fact in their face. Arguments ensued about which couple was better (by what standards?), etc.

Unfortunately, a good portion of active online J/H fans at the time (remember, this was twenty years ago) were a mean-spirited bunch (egged on by one person in particular who purposely went against Fan Forum rules and was, quite frankly, abusive to the T7S moderators who tried to moderate and keep the peace).

After getting fed-up with feeling controlled by the mods who had to enforce the site's rules (but they did so diplomatically, not like despots), this group of J/H fans migrated to a different message board on Fan Forum solely dedicated to J/H. But the leader of this group continued to break the site's rules, ignored all warnings from that board's moderators and was suspended -- then, eventually, banned -- for continuing inappropriate behavior.

Meanwhile, Eric/Donna shippers felt relieved the hostility had stopped and could enjoy talking about their ship in peace.

I'm very glad I joined the fandom years after that unpleasantness was over. I became friends with people who were on the receiving end of the J/H fans' hostility (and some of the verbally-attacked people shipped J/H hard, too!), and they shared what they'd experienced.

Then (once I became a moderator myself), I read through all -- and I mean all -- the posts ever written on the T7S board and the J/H board, which allowed me to witness what the online T7S fandom was like from the start and how it evolved, devolved, and evolved again.

I discovered lots of links to fansites and fanfic sites dedicated solely to T7S fic in general and J/H fic specifically, and these gave me more insight to the early fandom (thank you, Internet Wayback Machine). It was very J/H-centric.

Sadly, a lot of the T7S stories were lost when the people running the fanfic archives shut them down due to a lack of time. FFnet existed then, where a portion of these stories were posted afterward. If AO3 had existed back then, too, these archives of now-lost T7S fic could have migrated there.

To sum up, Jackie/Hyde fans have been the most actively involved and creative (writing fanfic, making art, . gifs, wallpapers, icons, and so on) from pretty much the get-go. That's not to say fans didn't discuss other T7S ships, but the J/H thread on Fan Forum, for example, reached the site's three-hundred post limit faster and more often than any other ship or character thread -- meaning hundreds of three-hundred post J/H threads are archived on the board.

J/H was also big on LiveJournal during T7S's original run and afterward for a few years. Fanfic was posted there, many special T7S *mood* .gifs were made for people to, well, declare their mood on any given post or day. A very cool and funny T7S RPG was conducted there, too, with all the main characters.

During season 8, a campaign was conducted by the J/H fandom, asking the producers to put J/H back together by the end of the series. This campaign consisted of hundreds of letters in a packet brought to a S8 taping by one of the T7S board's moderators. She brought the letters to someone working on the show, and that person said (I'm paraphrasing), "Jackie and Hyde are done. Nothing will change that.")

Also during season 8 tapings, the audience would boo whenever Samantha went on stage (or on set) for a scene. The audience was full of Zennies, who were told to stop booing or they'd be kicked out.

But the producers got the picture and wrote Samantha off the show, which wasn't the original plan. Sam was supposed to be S8!Hyde's endgame. Just like Jackie was S7!Hyde's endgame until Fox ordered another season halfway through S7's production and episodes were already airing, and the scripts -- including the original series finale -- had been written.

A lot of rewriting happened after S8 was greenlit. J/H weren't supposed to reconcile at all until the end, where Jackie spills her heart out to Hyde about her job opportunity in Chicago and that she'd give it up because being with him is the most important thing to her.

He lets her go (and I have no clue if it was the same way or reason as we see on the show: was it a fear of commitment on his part as the episode portrays it, or was it more in line with "On With the Show," where Hyde puts his own needs aside so Jackie can have her very important moment of confidence in her independence -- one of, if not *the,* most in-character moments for Hyde in S7).

But Hyde realizes he wants Jackie in his life forever, drives to Chicago, and proposes to her in the motel room. No towel-wrapped Kelso to disrupt it. That was J/H's originally written endgame. They get their happy ending.

If it's not too intrusive to ask, I was wondering how you went about finding a doctor to get your autism diagnosis? I've been pretty sure for a few years now that I'm on the spectrum, but I've never had a clue how to actually get tested/diagnosed. Especially since I'm an adult female too, and I've heard a ton about how autism is really overlooked/underdiagnosed for people like us.

But seeing that you were able to find someone who avoided all the common pitfalls and was able to actually help you made me want to reach out. I had been wanting to ask you this for a while (as you can probably tell based on what the question was haha) but I was too anxious to actually do it (still am, a bit ><). Again, feel free to ignore this part if it's too personal or you don't want to answer it for any reason!

It feels awkward to end an ask with that, so I'll bookend it with something I think you'll like: have you ever heard of trsrockin.com? It's an old fansite I used to visit religiously as a kid that talked about early Pokemon and Super Mario games and collectibles from them, as well as oddities like glitches from the aforementioned games, forgotten weird one-off SNES games, documenting fake/trick fanmade "cheats" for games, and bootleg merchandise.

It's one of if not the first public place (afaik) that MissingNo. and pals were discovered/talked about, and a little community came together to try and figure out why the glitch happened and what all the effects and variants of it were. Even you've been to trsrockin before and none of this is new info, I thought it would at least be a nice trip down memory lane :)

also!! i've definitely heard of trsrockin eheehee... i was a bit too young to use it when it was in its prime (and also more of a bulbapedia enthusiast), but i've perused some archived pages before! old internet forums & fansites are just the best thing in the world...

ANYWAY: regarding your question! Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm the best person to give advice about this, because I feel like I kind of got my diagnosis by chance... Essentially: I started seeing a new therapist; she suggested I might be on the spectrum, I said, "Yeah maybe IDK"; I got a referral to an evaluator—and then an incredibly expensive diagnosis after a few months of waiting and testing.

My case differs in that I didn't really suspect being on the spectrum myself. Which seems a bit silly, considering I now realize I am... observably autistic. In abundance. But it was genuinely hard to puzzle out, what with all my other problems (particularly, severe misophonia, which can be REALLY hard to differentiate from general sensory sensitivity.) So about specifically seeking out a diagnosis, I unfortunately can't give a good answer. But I'm willing to talk about the rest, on the off-chance it ends up helpful! (Under the cut at least.)

I don't like to be too open about my Issues™ online—but I got a whole lot of them, and they used to be a lot worse than they are now, so I was stuck in that perpetual "adolescent with treatment-resistant depression" purgatory for, like... my entire adolescence! Because no one knew what the hell was wrong with me. I'm barely in adulthood now, but I'm extremely thankful to be broken out of that. Both the 'treatment-resistant depression' diagnoses AND the adolescence. Being told with authority that I, indeed, have an untreated case of mega-autism—and not an irreparably broken brain whose electrical activities zap SSRIs straight out of existence—is definitely relieving. And now I can confidently say shit like 'mega-autism', so like, wins all around.

About getting a diagnosis in general: in my case, I kind of needed one, because it would be not be feasible for me to go to school/work/exist without accommodations of some kind. (The evaluation I had was, in part, just to get a psychological report of any kind, since I desperately needed supporting documentation to request accommodations anywhere.) Otherwise, I'm honestly not sure if I'd bother?

On one hand, an official diagnosis is an incredibly affirming thing to have—especially if you didn't even suspect it before; things start making a lot of sense afterwards, LOL—but on the other hand, it is a tedious and kind of humiliating process. And possibly expensive.

And then, like you mentioned, there's the problem of some doctors being biased or plainly godawful at their job/poorly designed systems ruining everything for everyone. It's probably for incompetency on those ends that a diagnosis managed to elude me for nineteen years straight. (Vividly recalling the time my school had a counselor give me an impromptu autism evaluation, in which she concluded that I "didn't seem to have autism, but would probably get along really well with autistic people." WHATEVER THAT MEANT.) But! It's not impossible to get someone who knows what they're doing! I'd love to say otherwise, but I really did just stumble into a decent doctor... There's a lot of luck involved, and man. I did not get good RNG at first. (← I'M SORRY FOR BEING A GAMER.)

I went into the evaluation doubting I had it, and heavily doubting that I'd be diagnosed, but like... Hold on let me reach across your desk and slide you the answers to the autism test. The trick is to not even try to be normal, I think. Intermittently talk about CRT monitors, and how you like learning ciphers, and Pokemon glitches—or whatever else you're into. But those specifically worked for me! "Don't mask", is what I'm saying. (Really though, I think if you're answering everything to the best of your ability, properly administered tests done by a doctor who doesn't suck should be able to diagnosis you. If they don't, then the problem is something systemic, and far beyond anything I could reasonably give advice about...)

ANYWAY! (x2) I'm honestly not sure if any of this is particularly helpful, but if you decide to pursue it, I wish you luck with getting your diagnosis!! It's definitely a bit of a hellish thing to do—but dammit, if it's worth it to you, then it's definitely worth doing.

I HOPE THOSE FANSITES THAT CAUSED A RUCKUS AT GDA GET THEIR CAMERA WRECKED! I HOPE THEY LOSE ALL THEIR MEMORIES! I HOPE THEIR PICTURES ENDED UP UGLY AND BLURRY! SCREW THEM!!!

Context:

Clips have been surfacing from the VIP section of the 2023 Golden Disk Awards that happened yesterday (as the time I am writing this), of fansites causing a ruckus because security and staff caught them sneaking in their big professional cameras.

GDA has stated that these cameras are strictly prohibited.

Yet they managed to still sneak them in, in disgusting ways really:

And these fuckers ended up using other people there, yknow, HUMAN BEINGS, as their tripod to get their shot. Security obviously is trying to catch them so not only did they lay their stupidly huge cameras on peoples shoulders and heads, as a way to avoid getting spotted, they accidentally started hitting peoples heads and bodies with them. They even began shoving people away to hide in the crowd from said security. A Tiktoker even stated that the girls because they have small statures started crawling away.

I understand this is not a new occurrence. Basically a tale as old as time really but FUCKKK THIS IS EMBARRASSING DUDE!!

Security obviously caught on to them and started to handle the situation but these bitches fought back!!! and they fought back hard! Causing said ruckus and that ended up being noticed by so many idols 😭😭😭😭

Allegedly theres one fansite that threatened to punch a girl scolding him, and there is this clip (TW! harassment) of a fansite grabbing and pulling a GDA staff to the ground!!!

These poor fans and staff members dude!! These staff members are just doing their job! Asking you to follow the rules and theyre getting shoved around and yelled at! Same with the fans who payed SO MUCH MONEY TO BE IN VIP to have a good fucking time only to be made as tripods, hurt, and also shoved and yelled at!

This happened in my country dude! and this is some of the artists first time in my country!!!! Like Enhypen! NewJeans! IVE for examples! Its embarrassing if they thought we were the cause of this!! Seventeen was making their daesang speech when this happened and THEY SAW IT!!

Im proud of the Indonesian kpop fans and staff for being able to stand their ground and not tolerate this behavior. I truly truly hope they're okay and were still able to enjoy most of their time there. Cause from what I can tell besides that issue and the heat from the venue, GDA went very smoothly.

Translation Notes

泥流 is the flow of lahar/volcanic mud when a volcano erupts and 跡形もなしや (written in hiragana as あとかたもなしや) is like "without leaving a trace", I thought saying literally saying left without a trace was too basic for such a powerful song, so I went with "poured into nothing" to maintain the original imagery and meaning.

Personal Commentary Nobody Asked For

Many lifetimes ago I ran the Jun Togawa Forever fansite with my friend Pat, he translated all of the songs and I did the website... stuff. Because of it, Pat got to meet Jun's manager and it was basically the thing that set me off onto wanting to study Japanese to begin with. The sadness I was experiencing at the time couldn't be expressed in my own language because I was barely fresh off being a teenager, and I was treated poorly by almost everyone around me. Real "nobody understands me" type shit. So, i'd listen to this song on repeat a lot and read my friend's translation, because it felt like somebody understood me.

The reason I stopped running the website, posting throwbacks and setlist updates etc was because I actually hated most of the English fans. Pat was working very hard at a critical time to translate information and whenever I had a question, I would ask. But people kept jumping to assumptions about what Jun's art was trying to convey. It sounds almost cliche, but the perspective of dudes with no knowlege of Japanese language or culture was dominating the discussion about a Japanese woman's work, stripping it of time, place and it's author. One person's self expression through art became a talking point for being anti-pop culture - because it was antithetical to the norm, that's all it could be, or that became the main focus. I hated how our work was just being consumed by people who's reaction was just "cool" or "thanks", and the voice behind the lyrics was stifled for the sake of making hamfisted commentary about pop culture, from a society and culture that the authors themselves had sparse knowlege of.

It is extremely petty. This was also before Suki Suki Daisuki blew up on Tiktok too. But, the phrase "anti idol" just screamed fake deep to me lol. Once I actually started speaking Japanese and explaining the perspective of non-Japanese people about things to Japanese people, they were mostly confused. BiS' producer also called it "fucking stupid." I think about deleting all of the translations sometimes out of spite.

I wanted to come back and translate this song myself because... fuck it, why not. I'm not in the same mindset as when this was the one thing keeping my head above water, but I did have some poor experiences with people at university recently. I thought about this song because it feels like it's fine for terrible things to be said and done to me, but everyone else is seemingly allowed to do whatever they want. Be it emotionally or sexually as a friend or as a coercer. But i've resigned myself from caring because hey, life goes on.

June was accused of being a bully in middle school and high school. Apparently stating that June was responsible for the harassment, physical injuries of the student, ██████. There have been accusations popping up in the fandom left and right. To the point where in 2022 you couldn't search up June M- in google without dozens upon dozens of websites, ‘fansites, and twitter accounts dedicated to informing others of her bullying accusations. Of course, seeing as June is still in the group today, these accusations were debunked one way or another. But looking deeper into the whole situation, netizens found the whole scandal to be odd. But now, in 2023, the situation is rarely spoken of. Besides the occasional twitter ramble about how honeyco paid people to keep quiet about the situation. 

‘Favorite Child’ and ‘Honeyco's Most Beloved’ were titles specifically given to June in late 2021 and early 2022, after she released her first solo song. June always seemed to receive special privileges in Honeyco, and her getting the first solo career was the breaking point for most fans. Previously netizens had pointed out how large the amount of sponsorship June was receiving compared to the other members. And before that even, in their debut era people pointed out how costly June’s outfits were compared to the on-budget outfits the other members wore. This ‘problem’ was never resolved, and the apparent mistreatment of the other Mira members still continues to this day.

June, believe it or not, is possibly the most corrupt person in honeyco, even more than the ceo (which is saying a lot). June comes from a rather wealthy family, she grew up in a large manor with her caring and loving mother and hard working and compassionate father. They lived peacefully, June attended a large private school for most of her life. Until one day her mother and she received the devastating news that her father had tragically passed in a car accident. June cut herself off from the world for years, before eventually her and her mother sold the manor for money, and moved to Busan. Her mother, after somewhat pulling herself together, sent June off to a new public school near their small house. This was when June’s bullying accusations would have started. She was on edge constantly and being abruptly forced into this new environment unwillingly set her off the edge. Was she the person all the accusations said she was? She didn't know, she didn't bother enough to remember that palace. All she did recall was the need to breathe from all the gossip that surrounded her back then. Later, she eventually gave up on her education and went to become an idol trainee. Her mother took her own life. June was devastated. Absolutely in ruins. To the point where she was prepared to give up herself. That was until the ceo of hoenyco,██████████, scouted her. Promising her to make everything better again. To this day June is still confused over how the life she currently has is making it better.

Ask An Aro Ace ASAW Day 3: Navigating Fandom When You're Aromantic

Fandom can be hard when you're aromantic, even when you're romance-favorable. Shipping is a HUUUUUUGE part of fandom. You can't go anywhere without running into it.

Shipping wars dominate fandom conversations.

Reader x Character fics have become super popular.

Someone is always getting paired up.

(And yeah, a part of it comes from amatonormativity being expressed in these shows and plenty of forced pairings, but there's such freedom in fandom and the ability to play with anything, put in any genre, explore any what if...and it still often boils down to shipping.)

Even children's shows aren't immune. Even animated animal shows. People will ship anything, everything, anyone.

Aro-coded characters (since we don't really get aro characters) are either ignored or forced into romantic pairings because people decided that "hard to get" or "love will fix them" is addictive. People either want more of pairings they didn't get enough of in a show or they want pairings that they never got to see in the show. No matter how a character is treated, they're not immune from shipping.

I've even see people arguing with aro fans that their headcanons can't possibly be aro and why they're wrong. Even though it's just a damn headcanon and we can do whatever we want with the characters! But authority forbid we make them aro, tho.

While I have never been into shipping (I might support or enjoy a ship someone else really liked but I never saw two or more characters and just automatically went "oh yeah. they should date" or whatever), I don't think it's unrelated that I fell out of really actively participating in fandoms* once I became aro. *Joining fandom forums, writing fanfic, drawing fanart, participating in fandom discourse, etc.

Everything just feels more closed off to you. Stuff without ships is rare and less desired. People get offended if you have aro headcanons. It's demotivating to participating, which can be really frustrating when you really enjoy something and want to be able to connect with others who enjoy it. But sometimes it can feel like the only thing people enjoy about fandom is the shipping and romance even though there's so much much.

So it can be very lonely to be an aro in fandom, and sometimes you can feel forced to have to act super into shipping just so you can enjoy something you like with other people who like it. And being an aro creator for fandom can mean little to no interaction for your creations. And while you don't do it specifically for the interactions, it's a lot more fun to create when people actually take in your creations than when you share them with the world and they get ignored and overlooked.

I wish I had some good tips for aros trying to get into fandoms, but I still haven't cracked it myself, yet. I guess start with aro communities and try to find other people there who enjoy the things you enjoy. Otherwise the best I've done is random interactions on social media rather than targeted or extended interaction like on fansites (forums and fic hosting), where I can better curate stuff that happens to be stuff I care more about and block tags and even creators that produce content I'm less interested in.

Sequel Scuttlebutt

Say it ain't so! ELEMENTAL 2 is apparently in the works! TOY STORY 5 is supposed to have Andy show up with his "new family"! Something... Something...

Yeah, um... I looked at the "sources", it's either some podcast with a lot of "I've heard" or a fansite with a very spotty track record. And there's been *plenty* of talk over the latter news, given how divisive TOY STORY 4 was.

How's about we wait for official word from the filmmakers, Disney, and/or Pixar themselves on what's happening? 'Kay? We're still less than a year away from the movie ELIO, and an INSIDE OUT sequel is right after that... Like... C'mon, this is not only quite early for a movie that currently does not have a release date, but also... It's not from the filmmakers themselves.

I'd imagine TOY STORY 5 should be out in about a few years from now. When Disney bought Pixar in 2006, and Pixar finally began production on their TOY STORY 3 - and not some Pixar-less concoction that had been in development prior to that, they announced it right off the bat. And the movie, at first, was set for 2009. It ended up being released in 2010, four years after the initial announcement.

TOY STORY 4 was officially unveiled during a Disney earnings call in fall 2014, with a summer 2017 release date. Overtime, it went back a year, and then another year... So that's about 4 1/2 years out from release.

TOY STORY 5's existence was revealed to us mere months ago. It may come out in 2026, or 2027, maybe even a little later. It's probably deep in development as I type. Again... I'll just wait for its director/writer/whathaveyou, or a studio press release or some announcement from a reputable trade.

ELEMENTAL 2... Yeah, I mean, it *could* happen? Originally, that movie's ending was to have a time-skip, and it ended up getting axed. It's been hinted that the sequel could lengthen what was to be a minute or so long, or something else. The movie is currently up to $478m at the worldwide box office, over 2.3x its $200m budget. $500m would be the classic 2 1/2x breakeven point, but both Disney and Pixar heads seem quite happy with how the movie did regardless of overall total. They're wisely thinking of its legs and good scores. It's a real pick-me-up from how LIGHTYEAR did last year, and in terms of animation all-around, Disney Animation's STRANGE WORLD's disastrous run.

So, yeah, it could get a sequel... But I'll wait till word from the source.

It'd be rather quick, too. Pixar sequels tend to be announced a little while after the first/previous movie debuts. With the exception of TOY STORY 2, and first sequels to movies made before the merger, they tend to wait that out.

CARS came out in June 2006, the sequel was announced in April 2008.

CARS 3 was officially announced in March 2014, nearly three years after CARS 2 came out. Michael Wallis, the voice of the Sheriff in those movies, did let that slip a little while beforehand whether he was supposed to or not. That was in, approx., August 2013.

Again, TOY STORY 4 was announced in October 2014. This was four years after the release of TOY STORY 3.

INSIDE OUT came out in June 2015, the sequel was announced this past September, some seven years after the first one came out.

I'll throw in LIGHTYEAR as well, given that it's TOY STORY-adjacent. TOY STORY 4 came out in June 2019, LIGHTYEAR was announced in December 2020. Over a year and a half later.

So if an ELEMENTAL 2 (ELEMENTWO?) is indeed in the cards, I'd imagine they wouldn't announce it this fast. Maybe in a few years from now.

It'd be interesting to see that movie be the first of the Docter-era movies to get a sequel, after all, it is their first somewhat-financial success in a long while - in the old-school pre-COVID sense.

The movie was greenlit before Pete Docter became Pixar's CCO, but it went full steam ahead after the previous leader's ousting.

It's hard to gauge with the other titles. ONWARD didn't fare too well even before it was cut off by the pandemic, SOUL isn't really a sequelizable movie, LUCA maybe? TURNING RED, maybe? They're very self-contained stories, like most Pixars are. That's not to say they absolutely *can't* have sequels, but it's okay if they don't get them, either. Had LIGHTYEAR not flopped, we would've gotten at least another one of those, given the TOY STORY association. (I also wanted to see a second one, myself.)

I think it's kind of telling that their next sequels are to older movies/legacy favorites. INSIDE OUT turns nine years old when the sequel comes out, that's just wild... I mean, outside of the newer movies and the pre-2010 favorites, there's not much else to do. BRAVE seemed like a decent candidate for a part two, but after everything that went down with that movie? It didn't seem like it had much of a future beyond its solid run in 2012, despite Merida's induction into the "Disney Princess" line. GOOD DINOSAUR lost money, and COCO really doesn't need a sequel.

So they've only got two pools to pull from: Either most of the pre-2010s movies (there's no way A BUG'S LIFE 2 happens), or the post-Lasseter movies.

Also, a Pixar filmmaker retweeted this, which is mocking the rumors...

So, yeah, it seems like a big bowl of bunk to me.
