Happy Twelfth Night!
Here are some Viola/Cesarios to celebrate! I've rambled a bit about the play and these different versions below~
Although it may not seem particularly festive to modern audience, the title of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night actually references the twelfth night of Christmas (marking the coming Epiphany), with some scholars theorising that it was first performed on the 6th January 1601 for Queen Elizabeth's Twelfth Night celebrations. Christmas in the Elizabethan period was associated with revels, misrule and inversion of the social order - where servants were the masters for the day and children could be crowned mock-bishops. Therefore, the play's deconstruction of social roles, particularly gender roles, would have come across as very christmassy to Elizabethan audiences.
Johnny Flynn and Anita-Joy Uwajeh's perform as Viola/Cesario in my two favourite performances of Twelfth Night: the 2012 and the 2017 Globe performances! I think they both showcase polar opposite styles of adapting the play and how they can both shine: the 2012 production is more traditional in that it reproduces much of the original performance context (Elizabethan setting, all-male cast etc) but is very watchable and honestly hilarious. Mark Rylance as Olivia especially is a highlight - he is so very elegant but is also able to make Olivia on par with the other characters in terms of comedy, despite her usually more serious role. You might recognise Johnny Flynn as Mr Knightley in Emma (2020) but he also slays hard as Viola! The 2017 production, on the other hand, showcases the strengths of modernisations of Shakespeare - I actually saw this one in person in 2017 as I was doing Twelfth Night for A-level at the time, and it was just unforgettable! The setting is shifted to 1970s Scotland and imho translates a lot of the original elements in ways that would resonate in a similar way for contemporary audiences- with songs, dance numbers and some hilarious added dialogue/quips. Even the comic characters (Sir Toby Belch and co) who are often hard to translate for modern audiences were hilarious and I found myself excited to see them come on stage. A huge stand-out is Le Gateau Chocolat as Feste, who has an incredible voice. Having a drag performer play Feste is honestly a great modern analogy as she's a performer who takes tips, is able to question social norms with her art in ways that allow her to be the most insightful character, and is also inkeeping with the play's exploration of gender. Of course, Anita- Joy Uwajeh was absolutely fantastic as Viola too. You can watch recordings of both productions on the Globe-player if you're interested!
I couldn't find anywhere to watch the 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night starring Anne Hathaway as Viola/Cesario but honestly I just wanted to draw her anyway <3 In the last few years a promo shot from this production became a really popular 'draw your OT3' meme which I myself have indulged in - it'd be cool if there was a way for more people to watch this given the resurgence of interest!

The Holdovers (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Gosh, I do miss snow. Not something we get much of here in the dreary old UK. So thank you Alexander Payne for really rubbing it in our face.
Plot: A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school remains on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students with nowhere to go. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.
Payne’s last movie 2017’s Downsizing was an underwhelming mess, with an interesting concept that is dropped within the first half hour, and instead of the fun science fiction/biting social satire we get a movie dealing with real-world dangers and a random apocalypse for reasons I don’t believe even Alexander Payne knows. It was very much a movie that was not conceived or thought out properly, hence why it was a flop financially and critically. And I didn’t like it myself, which is the worst of it all. So many may be doubting checking out Payne’s new film The Holdovers, however luckily this is a return to form for the talented scriptwriter/director, as pushed aside are any high concepts and instead we get a simple premise, yet it’s one that’s delivered in such an entertaining and heartwarming way.
The Holdovers is very much a vibes movie. It has that old-timey retro feel to it from how it is shot to make it look like it’s from the 70s (reminiscent of John Hughes films and Dead Poets Society). You also have the constant snow falling and the Christmas music just really delivers that cozy winter feel. It’s a wholesome Christmas movie through and through. Which is ironic due to two of the three main characters being absolute asses, but it’s the way the narrative forces these three characters to be stuck together by themselves over the holiday period, and how they develop from this that results in a very delightful little film. Also, having your main characters have flawed personas doesn’t always work with certain films, for as an audience it is easy to disconnect if you don’t at all sympathize with the characters you follow, however here Alexander Payne successfully manages to make you care about them by showcasing that at the end of the day, they are all just human, and through their dickishness they do still have some redeemable qualities too. Boasted by David Hemingson's very well-written script - some good wit and humour throughout, but also it’s the emotional backbone with the film reflectively diving into themes of grief and loneliness. It’s a dialogue-centric feature but one that easily wraps itself around you as you enjoy spending time with these characters.
Paul Giamatti is fantastic here. Giamatti always delivers a great performance, heck, even in the forgettable disaster CGI fest film San Andreas he managed to somehow deliver a solid turn as the climate professor, delivering endless exposition and science mumbo jumbo with such passion and vigor that one wouldn’t have questioned it if he got nominated for a Noble Prize. But with The Holdovers he finally gets to take on a lead role and he’s phenomenal. He’s very reserved as this Scrooge type who’s very bitter at life and life is bitter at him. Like it’s still Giamatti being Giamatti, yet you truly buy into his performance. Dominic Sessa as the troublesome kid too plays his part well, and in fact his performance mirrors a lot of what Giamatti is doing with that feeling that he is willing to help others, but he is also so stuck in his own ways and pissed off at the world that he constantly makes bad decisions. Da’Vine Joy Randolph brings so much to her role as a grieving mother and as such I do wish the movie did more with her character. There is only one real scene where she’s given rein to really portray the grief, anger and distress of her character but otherwise is written a bit one note, so I do wish Payne gave her more to work with as Randolph really brings it, but I also understand the movie’s intentions and focus were more on the professor and the student. That being said for Randolph to go from the crude Christmas comedy Office Christmas Party to another Christmas movie but one where she really brings her dramatic chops is very impressive. Now all she needs is to appear in a holiday-themed horror flick and she’s fully become the holiday movie queen!
In terms of negatives, there aren’t many. As I mentioned, Randolph’s character could have been explored more. Also, the film’s narrative is very predictable; again, just think of Dead Poets Society. However, Payne so successfully tells this story and delivers a heartwarming nostalgic experience that it’s hard not to love. It’s been a while since we’ve had a perfect old-school well-spirited Christmas movie, and luckily The Holdovers is destined to become a holiday classic.
Overall score: 8/10

20 questions for fic writers!
Thanks for the tag @lumosatnight (x)!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I currently have 258 works on my emeraldlove account. Give or take xxxx on another account and unrevealed works. I write a lot of drabbles. 😅

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
"I'm in. I'm all in." [Harry Potter, Snarry, 8.4k, Rated M]
The Pocket Watch [Fantastic Beasts, Gramander, 2.4k, Rated G]
Colours [Harry Potter, Snarry, 2.2k, Rated E]
Cups of Tea [Fantastic Beasts, Gramander, 1.7k, Rated G]
Sandalwood [Harry Potter, Snarry, 1.6k, Rated M]
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
You bet! I love getting comments, especially on older fics. Usually people don't comment on drabbles or don't comment in certain fandoms, and receiving comments on those fics make me feel like I made it. lol
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'm not sure! I guess I'll go with 'He waits.' [Harry Potter, Snarry, 300 words, Rated M]. It's an expansion on a microfic I wrote for Microfic May. Infidelity + First Person.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of my fluff fics! I've written tons. But I guess I'll say my most recent fest fic -- Invisible String [Harry Potter, Snarry, 3.7k, Rated G].
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Once or twice. Then I turned off guest comments. If people want to leave hate, they need to be logged in so I can block them. 😈 YKINMKBYKIO, DLDR and SALS, people! I do occasionally get weird comments. They get deleted, too.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Not usually. I'm more of a G-T rated girl, cause apparently if I write smut, I'll go dark. [Link leads to my HP Kinktober works. Mind the tags!]
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not yet! But I did write fusion fics/inspired/AU fics before.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I write drabbles. I don't think people will steal those. Right? 🥺 [Please, don't steal. 🙏]
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've written fics that has art, but I've never co-written a fic before. I feel like I'll be too controlling or I'll be MIA. There's no in-between. 🤣
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Thorki, my love! I'm still waiting on the sun to shine on them again. BUT WHEN, MARVEL? WHEN? You might not think it's Thorki given how little I've written for the ship, but I'm Mr. Knightley. If I loved [them] less, I might be able to talk about [them] more.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Restoration [Harry Potter, Snarry, Rated M]! My only WIP fic. One day! And I guess my Interacting with Unusual Creatures series [Fantastic Beasts, Gramander, Rated G]. It's suppose to be a 5+1 Things fic. There are only two moments. 🤣
16. What are your writing strengths?
Packing a (emotional) punch in as little words as possible. Did I mention I write drabbles? lol
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing anything longer than 2k. It's always a *struggle*. Don't come to my AO3 account looking for a 100k plot-heavy fic. You'll be mighty disappointed.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
You do you!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Teen Titans (the Cartoon Network series) and the X Files. You will never see them. Ever. 🤣
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
I don't have an absolute fav. I have been thinking lately about a coffeeshop AU fic I written --- Warmth [Harry Potter, Snarry, 1k, Rated G]. I might write a sequel for that.

12/06/2022-Martin Down
We came to the other place we did on the bank holiday days last week and came to Martin Down. Early on when walking along the path from the lower car park I was delighted to see a group of tiny pyramidal orchids coming through. A strong species of this time of year which I first ever saw in 2019 here so I‘ve known them a few years now that I was just starting to have on my mind. I took the first picture in this photoset of one. It was lovely to see these distinctive pink gems for the first time in 2022. There was some valerian near them too a nice tall plant my first of the year. When looking at these we were thrust into the bird action as we heard a loud purr from a Turtle Dove coming from the farm area. We had a look over the fence and minutes later saw this dove fly just making out its exotic brown back and then we saw it go across the adjoining field into a prominent tree. A smashing sighting of a precious bird I adore that we didn’t see here at all last year. So it was really nice to see it, my first of the year another top year tick lately to take my year list to 178. I was so happy to see it.
I liked seeing a fragrant orchid further up on the walk, another very beautiful pink flower that it was a delight to see and made me so happy to see it. It’s a species I have heard of before but this was the first I’d ever seen so this really made me happy. Near here was my first definite knapweed of the year a probable greater knapweed a sweet purple flower. It attracted nice bees with red/orange rears here well and there were dazzling Five-spot Burnet moths nearby which I really enjoyed seeing today. Other flowers/plants I liked seeing today on a good afternoon of it was hogweed including adorning the lane in, possible carrot, hedge woundwort, spotted orchids, white campion, a mustard/rocket type flower looking nice with loads in a big clump I took the fifth picture in this photoset of some, cleavers, milkwort, thyme, plantain, stunning red poppy, more lovely bird vetch one I saw well at Lakeside last year and have again in the last week and I’ve seen it here today and at Bentley Wood yesterday so it’s great to see them at a few different places, bird’s-foot trefoil, mignonette, pretty dropwort, speedwell, herb-Robert and some yellow rattle another I’d never seen before but had heard of these are very pretty little flowers. There were nice bits of colour in the grass from the flowers.
Further on we got a top view of a Brimstone butterfly looking fine in the sunshine with a Common Blue nearby I took the fourth picture in this photoset of the Brimstone. Then came another amazing bird moment when near the other gate to the farm a Barn Owl flew over! Another fantastic moment with this quintessential countryside owl and owls generally for me this year. Shortly after seeing this we heard a Turtle Dove purring again which was so immersive and calming. I remember in 2017 first seeing these two species in the year around the same time. It was a raptor and dove fest today as we also got beautiful views of Buzzard which I took the third picture in this photoset of, Kestrel and gigantic Red Kite gliding against the powerful blue sky which was so lovely to see, and saw Feral Pigeon, Woodpigeon and Collared Dove I don’t often recall seeing a Collared Dove here and never recall seeing Collared Dove and Turtle Dove on the same day before.
Soon after I got more lovely views these past few days of a rustic and captivating sight at this time of year, a ripely red Small Tortoiseshell butterfly which I took the sixth picture in this photoset of. Lovely to spend some time with one and see another later in the walk. Small Blue one I have had a good year for, Meadow Browns and Large Skippers seen for a third day running at three different places I love for butterflies and have been so key to my butterfly year so far Lakeside, Bentley Wood and here were other butterfly highlights at this key advancing stage in their year here today. Not long after the Small Tortoiseshell we saw a delicious flash of orange that reminded me of fruit salad sweets, a Wood Tiger moth like the one we had seen at the other end of the site last month here. Such a beautiful moth.
It was nice to take in rich green and panoramic views, with soft fluffy clouds in the blue sky and nice berries in places. When high up near the clump of trees we heard the second Turtle Dove in it was nice to watch the breeze make the grass of a field in sight sway parting the field. There were nice scenes as shadows moved across the landscape at times this afternoon. I took the second and seventh pictures in this photoset of views here today. Looking across a field from the track going the other way from the car park where we went briefly today there were loads of Hares again as there often is and like last time. Another fantastic walk at this truly special and wild place this year.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first Turtle Dove of the year, three of my favourite birds the Barn Owl, Red Kite and Buzzard, two of my favourite butterflies the Small Tortoiseshell and Large Skipper, one of my favourite moths the Five-spot Burnet, Kestrel, lots of Rooks and Jackdaws well again, Magpie, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Feral Pigeon, a smashing Yellowhammer again, a possible Corn Bunting, Long-tailed Tit, Goldfinch, Whitethroat, Blackbird, Pheasant, another Mediterranean Gull here like last time which I find so notable so far in land, Black-headed Gull, Common Blue, Small Blue, Small Heath, Meadow Brown, Brimstone, Large White I believe, Wood Tiger moth, other moths and the bees.
We stopped in the Rockford area in the New Forest to let Missy our dog have a swim on the way home and oaks and other trees here looked gorgeous in the strong early evening sun as did some Jackdaws. I took the eighth picture in this photoset there. I saw a Mediterranean Gull and possibly Great Crested Grebe near Broadlands on the way back whilst stuck in traffic. At home this morning I also enjoyed seeing Goldfinches which I took the tenth picture in this photoset of and other birds, admiring flowers including fuchsia starting to come out, the lovely red ones my favourite colour in the ninth picture in this photoset and the first love-in-a-mist I’d seen actually in the garden this year which looked beautiful in the back garden.

Album Review: Dhani Harrison / Paul McCartney and Wings
This week I got to review an anniversary reissue from a solo Beatle and I got to review a new album from someone with Beatle DNA.
Dhani Harrison INNERSTANDING
I wish more people knew what a powerhouse phenom Dhani Harrison is! I wish people talked about him the way they talked about Jack Antonoff. He has done some fantastic work with the band Thenewno2 (I named their album Thefearofmissingout one of my Best Albums of 2012), as part of the super group Fistful of Mercy, and he has done a ton of movie soundtrack composition too. But in 2017 he released his first solo album with IN//PARALLEL (read my review here). In October 2023, his first album in six years INNERSTANDING was released digitally. This week it is getting a physical release from H.O.T. Records/BMG.
Tumblr media
album cover and yellow vinyl
I'm going to address the elephant in the room: Dhani is the son of George Harrison. He was involved in the completion of his father’s album Brainwashed (released posthumously in 2002), was a featured performer at the Concert for George in 2002 and the George Fest in 2014 and he also helped develop The Beatles: Rock Band video game. In recent years he and his mother Olivia have also run the Dark Horse Records record label, founded by his father, and they have released albums by the likes of Billy Idol and Joe Strummer. I bring this up because that is what a lot of the attention for Dhani has been about. Any child of a much-loved musician has had to live up to their parent’s musicianship, just ask Jakob Dylan, Wolfgang Van Halen or Jason Bonham, all of whom are great musicians on their own, but had to live up to their legendary parents, which set the bar so unrealistically high. With the musical offspring of The Beatles, one can argue that you can hear their parent's sound in their music, i.e. John Lennon's influence on Sean Lennon's sound. With Dhani, his music is entirely different than George's music. It's easy to NOT compare his music to his dad.
With the first solo album, it felt like Dhani had really come into his own as a songwriter from Thenewno2. Here, it feels more grandiose and bigger in his musical approach. There's some collaborators on the album including Graham Coxon of Blur, Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit, and Mereki. There is a heavy influence from Trent Reznor and Peter Gabriel, especially on songs like "New Religion" or "Damn That Frequency". But he kind of defies a lot of genres and brings multiple styles in, sometimes within the same song. It's exciting to see Dhani emerging as not just a powerhouse phenom, but a studio production whiz!

Paul McCartney and Wings Band on the Run 50th Anniversary Edition
Originally released on December 5, 1973 (in the U.S.),  the third album from Wings and the fifth album Paul McCartney released since The Beatles’ 1970 breakup was released. It is considered by many to be among the best of the Beatle solo albums, up there with John Lennon’s Imagine and George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. I'd say this is probably his best non-Beatle album he released in his impressive discography. To celebrate the 50th anniversary (this year marks 51, but it's close enough to December 2023, so who cares, right?), the album was released last week by UMe in a special edition.
Tumblr media
original album cover
The timing of this album is coming a few months after the passing of Wings guitarist Denny Laine and this edition serves as a reminder of what an asset he was to McCartney's 1970s albums. When I interviewed Mr. Laine in 2019, I asked him what his favorite Wings album was and he said "With Band on the Run, it was just me and Paul doing the music and then Linda did some harmonies…but yeah, that’s really the one that sticks out is Band on the Run." Fully agreed! When I saw Laine at City Winery in Jan. 2019, he played the Band on the Run album in its entirety. What a treat to hear him tell loads of stories about each song.
Tumblr media
50th anniversary double CD edition
The album itself is noteworthy for the number of Sir Paul standards: "Band on the Run", "Jet", "Let Me Roll It", the list goes on. When I saw Sir Paul at Fenway Park in June 2022, he did some of the hits off the album. There's been various versions of this album but in 2010, I got the Paul McCartney Archive Collection version, which contained bonus tracks and a bonus DVD (the Best Buy edition). That one was awesome and sounded great. With this new edition, CD1 is the original album remastered. CD2 is "Underdubbed" mixes of the songs. According to the press release, Paul said:
“This is Band on the Run in a way you’ve never heard before. When you are making a song and putting on additional parts, like an extra guitar, that’s an overdub. Well, this version of the album is the opposite, underdubbed.”
While it is interesting to hear versions of the songs pre-final mix, for those of us who know the final songs so well, it can feel like an unfinished and incomplete version of the song. I like the 2010 edition of the album better, but this one has its moments.

Director John McPhail Discuses his New Film DEAR DAVID
Tumblr media
Director John McPhail’s new film, DEAR DAVID, is based on the viral Twitter thread by BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis. Adam responds to Internet trolls and shortly thereafter he begins experiencing sleep paralysis, witnessing strange events, such as an empty rocking chair moving in the corner of his apartment. As he chronicles increasingly malevolent occurrences in a series of tweets, Adam begins to believe he is being haunted by the ghost of a dead child named David. seeing the increased hits he is getting on his posts his boss encourages him to continue the “Dear David” thread. As things escalate in his apartment and seep into his daily life, Adam starts to lose his grip on what is online, what is real, and he needs to figure out how to break free before it’s too late.
Tumblr media
John McPhail studied Cinematography at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. During his time there he met and formed a close working relationship with Tyler Collins and Andrew Lanni, and in 2013 they formed their own production company, Worrying Drake Productions. McPhail wrote a short three-minute film called “Just Say Hi” to enter into the 2013 Virgin Media Shorts Competition, winning two out of the three awards available at the festival. His first feature film, “Where Do We Go from Here?,” was funded through a successful fundraising campaign. Directed in just 16 days, and in late October 2015, the film was screened at the Sydney Indie Film Festival where it won three of the seven awards it was nominated for. In 2017 he directed the Christmas zombie musical “Anna and the Apocalypse,” which premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2017. His latest film DEAR DAVID, is based on a story that appeared on Twitter in 2017, and “It felt like the perfect ghost story for our times, and we were all along for the ride,” reflected McPhail, who jumped on the idea when it came his way. John and I recently chatted about his latest film, opening Oct 13th, 2023, in select theaters from Lionsgate.

Get ready for a bone-chilling cinematic experience as Shudder, AMC Networks' premium streaming service for horror enthusiasts, joins forces with IFC Films to present the theatrical debut of "WHEN EVIL LURKS" on October 6th. This heart-pounding film, directed by the mastermind Demián Rugna, is set to make its global debut at the prestigious 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, marking Rugna's second feature after the electrifying "TERRIFIED," which clinched the Best Horror Feature title at Fantastic Fest back in 2017. Brace yourselves for an encounter with fear, as "WHEN EVIL LURKS," a Shudder Original, co-produced by Shudder, Machaco Films, and Aramos Cinema, is set to premiere exclusively on Shudder come October 27th. The partnership doesn't stop there; AMC Studios is in the early stages of collaborating to expand the "WHEN EVIL LURKS" universe into the realm of television, promising an even more immersive experience for fans. Guided by the visionary Rugna, the film narrates the chilling tale of two brothers stumbling upon a mutilated corpse near their property. As they delve deeper into the eerie occurrences plaguing their village, they uncover a malevolent spirit that has possessed a local man. The man's only hope lies in adhering to a set of arcane protocols to free himself from the clutches of this festering demon. The film keeps audiences on the edge of their seats as the brothers embark on a heart-pounding escape, racing against time to break free from the relentless grip of the vengeful spirit. Leading the cast are Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomon (known for "YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOU’RE TALKING TO"), Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater (recognized from "VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA"), and Marcelo Michinaux. With the combined efforts of Shudder, Machaco Films (Argentina), and Aramos Cine (Argentina), this powerhouse cast brings the spine-tingling narrative to life. Scott Shooman, Head of AMC Networks' Film Group, exclaimed, "Shudder consistently cultivates the finest and most innovative voices in horror, and they have yet again triumphed with Demián’s fresh and terrifying creation, 'WHEN EVIL LURKS.' We're elated to unleash this malevolent force onto the big screen, continuing our fruitful partnership with Shudder's Film Group." Director Demián Rugna shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with Shudder, stating, "Working with Shudder has been an incredible and seamless experience. They granted me the creative freedom to direct with the common goal of discovering novel ways to astonish and terrify audiences through an innovative approach and an entirely new narrative." The anticipation is palpable, with Charades' co-founders Pierre Mazara, Carole Baraton, and Yohann Comte exclaiming, "We're thrilled to continue our collaboration with Shudder/IFC Films, and we were utterly captivated by this Argentinean masterpiece. how i would run sm: Red Velvet edition
back to the series with the next logical group, Red Velvet. sm's first group after Exo and my ult girl group, similarly under a cut as per last post
triple debut (2014-2015): so to start, i actually dont mind Happiness as RV's debut and that its ot4. Yeri was really young, so i wouldnt really change those first two eras (Be Natural is my beloved but its a single and a remake so it doesnt count as their first cb in my eyes). what i would change is the schedules and some promo.
firstly, like Exo i think RV would have benefited from some sort of webtoon or lore comic starting at the second debut for ICC bc thats when we start to get hints that something in Cake Land isnt right. i have a lot of thoughts on RV lore/storyline which we will cover in the upcoming kwangya post (after nct and aespa posts bc they are integral to my version of kwangya).
second, Seulgi should have solo debuted in 2015 between Dumb Dumb and the lesbian christmas song (Wish Tree was iconic and we love Lee Jooyoung). shes been RV's ace since pre-debut, everyone knew and loved her and acknowledged her talents, and she was in multiple mvs of her sunbaes (Henry's Fantastic was the best). Seulgi being the first solo RV member feels right in every way, and while it would be very different than what we got for 28 Reasons, i think that might be partially a good thing.
the start of the success era (2016-2017): Russian Roulette was perfect and i have nothing to say about it. The only thing I would have done differently for them in 2016 was pushed for more solo/unit content, like station songs, vlogs, arts and crafts vids? like just stuff where theyre having fun and hanging out with no pressure. the main 2017 change tho is Joy solo debut. sm is so fucking stupid for NOT capitalizing on the attention Joy got from The Liar and His Lover, a show all about how perfect and amazing she is as a singer! like have her prepare and record between Red Flavor and Peek a Boo and have Peek a Boo pushed back a week or two. the concerts were a good idea, but they really should have capitalized on Joy's performance more. im still annoyed she hasnt properly debuted especially bc clips of her singing from TLAHL was what made me look into RV in the first place and why Joy is my girl ult of ults
Bad Boy (2018): id push Bad Boy back a little bc the time between PaB and BB feels too short, especially going by my plan. other than that, no major notes since the eras were pretty good and the concerts were a good idea. maybe a bit more of a rest after RBB bc of the short turn around time between that and the Japan cb + NA tour
ReVe Fest pt.1 (2019): the Ellie Goulding collab was amazing. ReVe Fest day 1 was a mess, and i say that as a Zimzalabim supporter. the styling was horrific and it all needs to go, the mv should have been more circusy and less performance vid imo, and the song is fine but maybe a less chanty chorus? ReVe Fest day 2 was good and idk why people hate Umpah Umpah bc it was cute and summery like it should have been. and then the Finale, Psycho was one of the best eras taken from us too quickly. i mean the only thing to change is to stop wendy from falling bc that killed the whole momentum and their careers for a hot minute.
the hiatus (2020): now to be clear, i am not blaming wendy for her injury or suggesting she should have come back early. its good she rested and healed properly and came back slowly to make sure everything was okay. every idol should do that. that being said, we should have gotten an ot4 album even if it was just a mini. the girls basically did nothing for a whole year waiting for her and it really did hurt them/their momentum. they should have had more solo content through the year alongside the like two group things, then Seulrene debut in june like originally planned, and then and ot4 album in fall or winter.
back on track? (2021): ot5 being at smtown was great and got everyone hyped to see the group after a full year of hiatus and they teased a cb at the performance. and then wendy killed the hype by doing her solo debut 4 months later with a ballady slow song. and she had the audacity to be like "omg i feel so bad for making everyone wait and then doing a solo" like girl wtf?? anyway gripes about her aside. Queendom was cute, but it felt lackluster after the long wait and felt more like a b-side than a title. also the mv/concepts teased all this magic and powers and a whole universe only to give us literally nothing after the first minute. why were they in a post office when the teasers were about the antique shop?? i would have changed the mv a lot to either expand on the magic or fit the teasers better.
ReVe Fest pt.2 (2022): sm cancelled the concert (rightly) bc the girls got covid but then never rescheduled bc there were "no venues open" even tho the same thing happened to dream and they got rescheduled in like two weeks so what the fuck is that about? um anyway they should have done a concert after Feel My Rhythm but also not named it ReVe Fest bc theres no point and they arent connected. ALSO FMR was beautiful and all but what happened to the ballet concept which wasnt in the mv and why did they not expand on the weird half story with Dark Queen Seulgi and the garden etc? also also FMR felt like a b-side too which was disappointing especially after queendom. and im skipping ahead to birthday bc that was actually the biggest let down of the year. the concept/teaser photos had literally nothing to do with the mv or song, the song itself was easily their worst title and did not sound good in any way, the mv styling wasnt great for pretty much everyone, the cake ver selling out before preorders even ended and before they showed us what it was/what was in it was super annoying. birthday is the biggest let down era imo and ESPECIALLY after the beauty of Wildside. Wildside was the only release in 2022 for RV that i actually 100% enjoyed from the style to the mv to the song to the plot in the mv. like it was perfect and exactly what we should have gotten as a Korean title and era. i would have absolutely done something similar for birthday, especially with the grunge outfits/concept
future plans/ideas: Yeri and Irene solo debuts, Seulrene cb, Joy actual debut this time, more solo schedules especially for the actresses, more Yeri vlogs, Seulgi cb with a better song, my highly indulgent KaiJoyYuta trio, an even more indulgent trio of Seulgi/BoA/Yunho, i think thats all i have off the top of my head.
next week nct u and the way nct overall would function before we get into the actual units
