I knew I wasn’t going crazy. The junior novel says nothing about Chip being Fish’s mother and addresses her as he the entire time, as though it’s a crime to have a woman co-captain a ship! Unless this is DreamWorks’ attempt to make a character transgender and it failed big time, I am very confused.

The Punny name just pisses me off, so I’m just going to call Chip “Mommy” and Fish “Cap’n Fish”!

And now for some headcanons!

Cap’n Fish’s birth parents were very negligent to their only son. Probably not on purpose though, since they gave birth to several girl baby eggs too. One day, Cap’n wandered too far from his family and even took a breath of land air for the first time. Not a good choice when there are lots of predators under the sea who know a baby can’t defend himself, not to mention lots of birds.

This is where Mommy comes in. Seeing the baby in grave danger, she swooped down, dove her beak down in the water before a seagull could get him and dropped him into an unoccupied bucket. After a polite ‘Thank you,’ Mommy adopted him.

Cap’n learned the delicate language of Pelican five days after being adopted. He was a very fast learner.

Mommy was born and raised in France. It wasn’t until a big war happened there that she was evacuated to China and decided to settle down there.

Chip’s full name is Chipelle. When she realized what her son’s name and her name sounded like together, she legally changed her name to Mommy.

Yes, Mommy is transgender.

Mommy can lecture Cap’n with one big squawk. Pelican language has different dialects, and it’s easy to tell when she’s ticked off.

Cap’n’s an aquaholic. Too much drinking water can give him the same sensation of drunkenness that mammals get when they overdo alcohol.

No, Cap’n and Mommy did NOT take up dancing after the events of Kung Fu Panda 4 like the Junior novel says! They love their ship too much to entirely abandon it.
