Writer's Ask Game
@mareebird said she knew I’d do this and she’s right because I’m supposed to be writing, so obviously I’m going to procrastinate.
what’s your total AO3 word count?
1,242,544 words
how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
21.
*cracks knuckles* Titan A.E., Darkwing Duck, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Atlantis, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Newsies, Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Re-Animator, LOST, The Office, Star Trek: Enterprise, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Wreck-It Ralph, The Starless Sea, MCU.
Things you can’t fine online anymore (if you ever could): Mulan, Prince of Egypt, The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, NewsRadio, Doctor Mordrid, and probably some other random things that I wrote little snippets of and never did anything with.
what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Real Asgardians of the Galaxy (MCU), They Change Their Sky, Not Their Soul, Who Rush Across the Sea (MCU), Sleight of Hand (MCU), Foundations (MCU), and Pulvis et Umbra Sumus (MCU).
do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I try to respond to every comment—I like to let people know how much I appreciate that they took the time to leave me one!
what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Do No Harm is pretty dang angsty. A lot of people tell me it made them cry.
do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I have, though I don’t really anymore, unless you count Wreck-It Ralph as a crossover. The craziest one I ever wrote was a complete crackfic that @franniebanana I wrote when we were teenagers, called Doth 2, which...was a typo or something? It’s really stupid. But I still think of scenes from it and crack up.
have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yup.
do you write smut? if so what kind?
Sure do! So much smut, haha. It’s...the sexy kind? I mean, hopefully? It tends to be what a friend refers to as ‘emo-porn’ because it’s always full of feelings, though once in awhile I write something Problematic™.
have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yup.
have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah, a few!
have you ever co-written a fic before?
@mareebird and I are co-writing a Brodinsons road trip fic. And, see above, weird crossover with @franniebanana. We were also writing a DS9 dance studio AU at one point, lol. @windsett and I have written a couple things together—including an original novel that has stalled.
what’s your all time favorite ship?
Loki/Stephen Strange
what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Lol almost anything on my ffnet profile that’s incomplete. There’s some stuff from the 00s that I’m definitely never going to complete.
what are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Action, I’m told, even though it’s a pain to write. Romance. I think I’m good at writing complicated emotions?
what are your writing weaknesses?
Verbosity, letting scenes drag on because I’m enjoying writing the dialogue, self-indulgence especially where romance is concerned. I never feel like I’m very good at putting together a good mystery, and yet I keep writing fics that include them.
what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I love doing it, though I always wish I knew more people who spoke other languages so I could actually check if my translations are correct. I do it more in my original fiction than my fanfiction.
what was the first fandom you wrote for?
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles.
what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I...honestly can’t choose. I think I’m proudest of A Full and Factual Account of Asgard. Hm. Maybe Sleight of Hand.
Tagging @bereft-of-frogs @thelightofthingshopedfor @adreamer67 @franniebanana @thegirlwholied @whatyoufish4 and anyone else who wants to do this!

Random Thoughts @ 2 AM
Something I've been really wanting to do lately is do an ask blog. Like, I think that era of Tumblr is kind of over, if not just dying lately, cause a lot of the blogs I followed back in the day are in the dirt, but there's still some out there. I tried one for a bit some time ago, but I wanna make it separate from this blog. Like, I'd maybe 'promote' it here, but for the most part, I just think it'd be fun cause I think that kind of story telling is just really fun and interactive.
And if there's one kind of ask blog I liked were the wacky AUs. Undertale and MLP cornered the market hard on these, but, like, they were so fun and creative and I can't help but smile a little fondly over some. And I think Tumblr is just the perfect powderkeg for AU stuff back in its prime.
Personally, I think "Space" and "Sci-Fi" are my favorite kinds of AUs. Just injecting a good amount of Sci-Fi flavoring can create interesting dynamics and storylines. Like, here's just a few I'd wanna start and actually might:
☆ A bunch of Pokemon Protagonist exploring Ultra Space and hopping dimensions in a space ship!
☆ Pinkie Pie as a spaceship captain, with a crew of randoms as they go from planet to planet doing daring do.
☆ Space Land from Mario Party 2, but taken to the extreme. With maybe either Donkey Kong or Princess Daisy as my main lead for pulp sci-fi adventures against Blackhole Bowser.
♡ An ask blog about Pauline as the mayor of New Donk City, with Samus as a reoccurring guest character/long-distant girlfriend.
☆ My favorite MHA Characters being put in the role of Voltron-ish Mech Pilotes. (Definitely not likely since that implies I can draw Mecha well, lol)
☆ Animal Crossing characters in a Space Opera with Mecha. Think Super Robot Wars or maybe even Into the Breach.
☆ Star Fox 2 blog, following Slippy Toad and Fay.
♡ Something more story focused; Captain Syrup kidnaps Princess Daisy and chronicling how that goes. Maybe with Luigi to rescue her. Super Luigi Galaxy...?
♡ Samus Aran, but as a Wild West Bounty Hunter instead of a Cosmic One. Maybe with guest stars from other Nintendo characters.
♡ Samus Aran falls from space into Hyrule. Maybe takes Link's roll or maybe goes on an adventure with Link. Would definitely have Samus X Zelda - come on, Link has, like, 4 other girls he can romance, I wouldn't be leaving him out in the cold.
♡ A Bean the Dynamite dedicated blog. Taking some inspiration from the comics, but with my own spin.
♡ A big Fairy Tale/Folk Tale crossover with Femboys and Maid Cafes.
Fuck, plugging all of these is gonna take me a while...

The Lunar Chronicles Headcanons part 3: return of the king
the rampion crew become celebrities and get plagued by reporters following Cinder’s coronation. Thorne and iko love the attention. No one else does.
Once the letumosis outbreaks are eliminated and the antidotes have been distributed, cress becomes the most highly demanded programmer/ hacker in the world. She’s the breadwinner and Thorne is the trophy husband.
Thorne loves to plan all the events that he and cress host! He develops such a knack for it that winter and jacin let him plan their wedding as well as the annual party where all of the crew gathers.
It becomes a trend for lunars who look up to winter to draw three scars under their eye to mimic her. Lunars who choose to get a bioelectricity inhibitor wear the scars as a symbol of pride in following in the footsteps of the strong lunar ambassador, the prettiest girl in the galaxy who chose to suffer through lunar sickness rather than manipulate another human being.
Since every single character has parent problems, they all donate so much money and hands-on time to helping out orphanages.
Cinder and Thorne have weekly FaceTime calls.
Winter is known for sending random and sickeningly sweet messages and little presents to members of the group for no other reason than she was thinking about them. The rest of the crew is infuriated that they can never match her thoughtfulness. Scarlet and Thorne both refuse to admit that winter has made them cry a couple of times.
Jacin, despite his cold nature, gives surprisingly spot on presents, which shocks everyone on the first birthday they share with him.
Wolf is cuddly. Once he feels safe he will curl up next to anyone, usually if scarlet is busy in the kitchen or doing chores while they have the crew over as guests. Being chosen by wolf is akin to having the family dog choose to sit on your lap. Everyone brags about it to everyone else for the rest of the night.
As part of kai’s inheritance, he found out he owns a small island in the South Pacific. Everyone in the rampion crew has access to use it whenever they need. Cinder and kai find themselves needing it...a LOT.
Everyone is very protective of cress. If she is crying because of someone or something ever,,,,then we’ll,,,, honey, you got a big storm coming 😳!!!1
Since most if not all of them were robbe of their childhoods (cinder and cress are only 16!!!!!Thats insane!!!!!) they spend the next few years experiencing those things that they didn’t get growing up. They consume children’s media, they fight with each other in dumb ways and learn how to makeup on their own, they let themselves be teenagers. Torin sees them during one of their slumber parties and his heart melts. There’s cinder and kai, forced to be monarchs and take the thrones in all of their weight, and cress who was isolated her whole life, and wolf who was taken from his parents at 12 and forced into a violent military, and scarlet who lost her grandmother—the only adequate parent she’d ever known— at 17. And winter, whose father had died and left her in the hands of the cruelest tyrant he could name. All of these people, despite being mature, were only c h i l d r e n. He tried to keep an eye on them and give them fatherly advice when they need. He also arranged for them all to have therapy.
Cinder, cress, winter, and jacin all go to school for awhile. They hire tutors and form a study group so they can learn what they were deprived of in their neglected states of upbringing. Cinder learns that language and composition is not her strong suit, or Jacin’s. But they both excel in math, science, and history. Cress is good at everything. Winter is extremely gifted in the realm of language arts and social sciences, but finds math difficult. Luckily, they can all help each other out.
Jacin keeps studying and becomes a doctor.
When she knows she won’t be making an official public appearance that day, cinder will wear cargo pants and a tshirt and use her glamour to make it look like she’s dressed up nice if she happens to see someone important in the hallway.
When/if anyone of them has kids iko is everyone’s favorite aunt no exceptions
If anyone has suggestions feel free to comment them and I’ll put them in my next one :))

A scene you found just breathtakingly pretty: Christmas at Hogwarts
A scene you found creepy (even when you knew it was coming): Nagini uses a corpse as a mask.
For any Potter heads. Some things that bothered you about the Harry Potter films:
- Where is Charlie Weasley?
- Where is Peeves?
- Where are Neville’s parents?
- The green/blue/brown eye thing. (This is not against Radcliffe. Some special effects could have fixed this easily)
- HarrY DiD YOu PuT YoUR NaMe IN tHe GoBlET of FIRE?! 🔥
- In Sorcerers Stone, Why did you change the snake at the zoos breed??
- “Voldemort” versus “Voldemor”. The silent t.
- Hermione’s. Yule. Ball. Dress. Color. Blue. Not pink. She specifically changed the color.
- Fluffy. Hagrid’s adorable Cerberus was originally bought from a Greek man. Why change it to Irish? I like Ireland but it was a Greek man due to where Cerberus’s initially came from right???
- Harry’s first Weasley sweater color
- Why does Harry only see his parents in the Mirror of Eirsed? Where’s the rest of the family?
- The Underage magic rules aren’t well explained in the movies making the 3rd year summons even more bonkers sounding
- The Patil Twins Yule Ball Outfits. They could have been soooo beautiful. Like this is the Yule Ball! The Twins would have (in my opinion) much more elaborate traditional Indian styled dress robes?? Idk.
- Love Movie Hermione! But some moments take away from Ron. Like when Ron defended her in the Chamber of Secrets. Hermione didn’t know what the slur “Mudblood” meant in the books. Ron had to explain it.
- Dobby needed more screen time. Some stuff Dobby did went to Neville because so many Neville scenes were cut.
- Where’s all the secrecy from the books when communicating with Sirius- “Snuffles”? Something Harry’s godfather insisted on to keep him safe.
- Snape’s title of “The half-blood Prince” is not explained. Neither is it made clear that Severus was also abused horribly at home throughout his childhood. Also that like Harry Dumbledore did nothing to help Severus when he was a student. (Or maybe Tom Riddle when he grew up in an orphanage. I’m sensing a pattern)
- Dumbledore should have still spelled Harry during Dumbledore death scene. No way would Harry just stand there if given the choice.
- Ron was not quite as ‘dumb’ in the books and a lot of his funny moments were cut from the movie. Which makes his jealousy moments all the more unbecoming. He also comes off a bit more arrogant in the movies. (This is not against R Grint. Who is awesome) The movies gave Ron the short end of the stick.
- Weasley/Malfoy Fued. Who else wanted to see Arthur and Lucius have a fist fight in a bookstore? Exactly.
- Albus Dumbledore isn’t all Sunshine and Daisys. He does some really messed up stuff yet no one ever seems to question this.
- Remus was the last Marauder. Yet his and his wife, Tonk’s, deaths are barley acknowledged.
- Also Teddy. Harry’s Godson.
- Harry’s and Ginnys relationship is not built on. It’s just there. Ugh. Heck Movie Ginny isn’t that great. You don’t know much about her except: She’s the only girl in Ron’s family. She’s the youngest Weasley. She’s obsessed with Harry. She’s a good Quidditch player. She has a temper. She was possessed by Riddle’s Dairy when she was eleven. She’s obsessed with Harry.
- Draco is essentially Harry’s antithesis. Where is he in some critical scenes in the movies?
- Where’s the Luna love???? Harry’s pretty rude to her in some scenes.
- There is no S.P.E.W. And Hermione’s more ruthless side is gone.
- The guys hair in The Goblet of Fire. Get a hair cut. Please.
- Some of Molly’s less than Stellar Moments. (Ex. When she believed rumors about Hermione and so treated he coldly. How horrible she was to Fleur. Ect)
- Fleur. Fleur and Bill still get married but the objections to the wedding aren’t as presented in the movies. Not is Molly’s and Ginny’s extreme dislike of Fleur. Or when Arthur apologizes to Fleur. Or really any of Fleurs best moments. The whole courting process is skipped.
- House Elves. The House Elves of Hogwarts.
- Percy Weasley. The ‘betrayal’. The returned Weasley sweater. Him turning to protect his family and fight for Hogwarts at the last minute. All gone. Which involves being forgiven by the Weasley Twins not an hour before Fred dies.
- The connection of the Black sisters. Specifically Adromeda - mother of Tonks. Who is Sirius cousin. Who married Remus Lupin. Tonks and Remus the parents of Teddy.
- Dean Thomas is pretty much gone.
- Rita Skeeter. Illegal Animagus. Hermione kept her in a jar.
- The movies didn’t allow Radcliffe to be sassy and sarcastic enough. Harry Potter is one of the sassiest boys to ever walk through the halls of Hogwarts!
- Harry didn’t fix his wand in the last movie.
- The history of the Marauders.
- The history explaining why Snape could never be comfortable around and trust Remus Lupin.

Jack Kline Winchester
Raising the new God as a Winchester
Supernatural meta. TFW meta. 15x12 meta. Galaxy Brains.
Hello my dears, this is my second meta for 15x12, if you want to read the first one (Destiel) is here.
I'm gonna try to put here my thoughts about tonight's episode.
And thank you Agus for all these beautiful gifs!
TFW writes their own destinies
Is funny, because this week's Destiel Chronicles I talked about this (it will be posted next Tuesday) but... I said TFW WROTE THEIR OWN DESTINIES. And this is how it is.
When Chuck describes Sam and Dean as "the real ones", it means they are not copies, they are originals, and they are the ones that bring Chuck nervousness... Because they are not puppet's, by free. They are TFW and as it was written in Death's books, that why Sam, Dean and Jack are the messangers of Chuck's destruction.
It caught my attention that she didn't mention Cas... Maybe because when Sam, Dean and Jack kill God, Cas will be in the Empty. IDK. Let's see...
And because the books write by themselves, destiny depends on them. And is marvelous.
Cas and the unresolved cosmic consequences
First of all... Cas smiling at Dean... Flirting with Dean? Okay that was too much for my eyes... I'm telling you people... You put these two in one room with no interruptions... And trenchcoats and plaids will fly over...
But beyond that, beyond all this blanket of pseudo happiness... The Empty exists...
What makes Cas completely happy, is Jack fulfilling his destiny..m so when Jack defeats God... Cas will be dragged by the Empty.
When Billie talks about unfixed cosmic consequences, starting with her death as a reaper, she glares at Castiel, and Cas lows his head. That what brought him to the Empty in the first place.
Tumblr media
Then Jack blocking him with a black piece on the game, is the Empty blocking his happiness.
But because each rescue from a dark Forrest (representing the Empty) had been successful, we infer Castiel's rescue will be too. Let's see ...
Jack is a Winchester
So let me put the things in order...
Sam, Cas and Dean were talking about how Jack was still without a soul... But the we saw him touching with regrets and sorrow in his face, the Mary Winchester carves on the table... So... Does he have a soul? I think he does...
Because after that, he decides to rescue Kaia from the bad place, even knowing he was going against Death's will, but he did it anyway, because he felt regrets and he wanted to fix things. That's to have a soul, a Winchester soul if you let me say...
So, to me, Jack has a soul, and a huge mission. He will kill God, replacing him, and he will bring that new world he is destiny to bring. Just like Shiva with his snake.
Miscellaneous: and just a little observation here... Sam doesn't trust Billie... That gave me goosebumps... Really. And Jack being afraid of her at the end of the episode, it gives me goosebumps too.
And Mable saying to Dean "I'm gonna need your angel" and Dean like HELL YEAH HE IS MY ANGEL! It killed me.
To Conclude:
TFW 2.0 writing their own destiny is what Chuck scares the most. Free Will, as I inferred in my other metas.
Jack has a soul, because he acted like a Winchester, and he acted with regrets. Trying to fix his mistakes.
The Empty is knocking at the door, but Castiel will have a successful rescue.
I hope you like this meta, see you soon!

Note
detroit become racist for 1. and claire for 3
when i get called out for posting about dbh i’m dragging u down with me
Favorite character: i mean... connor
Least Favorite character: answering this is making me feel like i’ve definitely answered this before LMAO anyway uh. Uh. so many of them are very easy to hate! i guess gavin because he’s got that added terrible layer of being a fandom favourite for some incomprehensible reason (actually it’s because he’s a young white man)
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): that’s SO MANY SHIPS i don’t think i even have?? one???? oh no no i lied big time actually markus/simon is canon in my heart. um. i think kara and luther are cute together. uh. uh. the tracis?? are gay?? so that’s good! so there’s 3. i don’t think. i can come up with two more lol
Character I find most attractive: north is REALLY pretty unfortunately. oh also there’s a random android model that you see around sometimes that’s like the most beautiful woman i’ve ever seen??? thinking about her... OH also just remembered that the model that ralph is is rly pretty and also just straight made up like that face wasn’t modeled after anybody which is probably why it’s nice lol
Character I would marry: none of these bitches are worthy of my hand
Character I would be best friends with: UHHHH. uh. idk uh. simon seems chill. i don’t know if i would get along with most of these characters honestly?? i’m far too much of a bitch. maybe hank actually, i think i could handle him
a random thought: i want to replay detroit again but dude all of markus’s segments literally suck so much that thinking about being forced to play them makes me die a little bit
An unpopular opinion: rk900 shows up for MAYBE 10 seconds and i don’t think gavin reed wants to suck his dick
My Canon OTP: those two very naked lesbians. can i point out that they’re sex bots and wearing literally the least sexy underwear in existence. like they’re wearing sports bras. wtf.
My Non-canon OTP: *thinking about markus and simon and the fact that if u keep simon alive the game acts like this is not the case*
Most Badass Character: everybody in this game is a fucking loser
Most Epic Villain: society....
Pairing I am not a fan of: hankcon is bad and like yes the whole game is bad but i’m gonna execute anybody who ships father-son relationships in any media
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): ALL OF THEM LOL but ESPECIALLY kara
Favourite Friendship: hank and connor :’) they’re the only part of the game that i’d actually call good bc i’m a sucker and a bitch for found family shit
Character I most identify with: the blue haired traci played by bryan dechart’s wife bc i’m also an angry lesbian who can’t act
Character I wish I could be: jerry
and now.... She
How I feel about this character: she’s GOOD!!! like all my opinions on her just come from re2make really and like... bruh... she feels like a rly realistic older teenage girl?? her dialogue is funny, i love her attitude about everything, and taking on an apocalypse daughter was SO galaxy brain of her. i love claire. genuinely my fave and really just.. such a refreshing character after playing through leon’s campaign since they’re too cowardly to give their male characters any hint of personality outside of Cool
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: none bc they won’t give her a lesbian friend :/
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: obvi her relationship with sherry is just *chef’s kiss* but honestly playing through darkside chronicles on 2-player was a lot of fun bc her and steve bounced off each other rly well. praying for a cv remake so My claire can hang with steve
My unpopular opinion about this character: her redesign is literally superior in every way and idk how unpopular that is but it’s the truth. take the nostalgia goggles off. she looked worse.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: wish she was a fuckin dyke :/
Favorite friendship for this character: oh i thought that’s what the non-romantic relationship question was. okay i’ll just use this space to say that despite the fact they get like three scenes together i like her relationship w leon and i Really Wish they got to interact more in re2make :^(
My crossover ship: HMMM......... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... honestly have no idea but a hot lady for sure. maybe one that gets her to eat a vegetable

[ 민규 : ]  in midst of summer months, the happenings outside his apartment seemed a little livelier and clamorous than any other time of the year. midnight tresses are slick with salt against his forehead and the expanse of his neck, he procrastinates yet another morning shower and instead, opts to drag himself to the balcony; curious to the sounds of zestful neighborhood children and cicadas though not expectant of anything different to the chapter he’s awoken to repeatedly. on the days of where he was not between clouds and less than 8 hours of sleep, he would usually remember to prepare coffee for himself as it is both a necessity and a sacrament to your resident university student. today was not one of those days. however much sunlight bleeds through the diaphanous milky curtains of his mother’s choosing, languorous lids remain somnolent yet, hopelessly clinging to fragments of previous dreams. disorientated by the sudden passing of slumber, he believes they exceed a great magnitude than this vapid réalité.
chiseled maw rests upon earthen palm and his elbow juxtaposed to the metal railing consequently; he is naught with identity nor ambition in these moments, and certainly not he perpetually busybee who is bang mingyu. the boy ascends the chasm of his conscious once glazed eyes begin to chronicle a synopsis of the scene beneath his balcony. humid heat that currently sweeps across this concrete jungle doesn’t seem to bother the kids. of course not. not when they’re equipped with popsicles and laughter and ice cream; infinitely fervent, volatile, and wreathed in both tears and smiles. he pays half a mind to their banter and quips, can probably predict their day-to-day plans on a than he would like to admit. too much free time is a chronic ailment of his.
there’s a certain flock that ensnares his attention every time they pass in an engraved path to the pet store just a few blocks away. a scrawny young boy with razor sharp fringes in the hair that was reminiscent of a bowl used for eating, turned upside down. poor kid’s gonna have the revelation of his life once he enters middle school. he chortles at the idea of his youth persisting as if the same picture newly re-painted. and then there was a little girl always a few steps behind with timorous footwork, plump with perhaps one two many candies, pigtails, rose flushed, sweet. the dainty billowing of her yellow sundress raps upon his heart as ancient hankerings begin to slip into the recesses of his feeble mind. periphery fades stale as daydream engulfs his entity, renders him utterly still when such thoughts are heavenward.
in olden days, he could count with the stars, all the times when their gazes mingled briefly, how his ribcage deemed unable to contain the conflagration within and how it ultimately etched in his scarlet brushed cheeks. a profound sentiment that both withered his poise ( what little he had at the time ) and also placated his soul. what began as many neglects to his covet, in fear of the love he may lose, became guilt and regrets en masse. time was sluggish in presence of the girl with galaxies in her eyes, she had held his world. in spite of mental adjuration, all the words encompassing his fervid being deteriorated once conglomerated in his throat and even prior, was beyond coherency. how could it be, when dictionaries and poems could not convey his deeply rooted infatuation? perhaps he overcompensating a bit. he still curses the sky for wrenching away the amour of his youth; all that fondness left unsaid and evermore captive to the agony of reluctances on his part.
( 은하, i want to see you. )

On the anti-imperialist roots of the Super Robot genre
Tumblr media
Tadao Nagahama is probably not a name you're familiar with. I won't reproach you for it, it's been a while, I had to look it up myself to help me remember. However, Nagahama is an extremely important person for my current subject of discussion: the anti-imperialist, anti-war roots of the Super Robot genre. Shinzo Abe, the current prime minister of Japan, probably most widely known in the west for wearing a Mario hat to promote the next olympic games, has been in his own quiet (and not so quiet) way contributing to the rise of hard right nationalism, historical revisionism, fascism, and a whole bunch of other nasty isms that have found traction in today's sociopolitical climate. Recently, I saw in passing a tweet about how the ever-popular, ever-mystifying Kancolle had an episode where Japan ended up winning the battle of Midway. Propaganda in media is nothing new, but that was quite egregious, even by my desensitized standards. It got me thinking a little bit about my own niche anime interests and how the common perception of the mecha genre is probably one either of random Gurren Lagann bullshit or simplistic, thinly veiled pro-Japan ideology packaged in a kid friendly, larger than life veneer. In a lot of ways, early Super Robots shared more in common with classical American Super Heroes than actual Japanese Super Heroes like Kamen Rider, which evolved into their own tokusatsu genre quite distinct from either paradigm.
I cannot rightly dispute these preconceptions as wrong, but I do want to at least bring up that some early, influential franchises rejected this narrative. One of the first of these, of course, is Mobile Suit Gundam. While now we have the distinction between Super Robot (robots that are like larger than life super heroes) and Real Robot (robots that are presented in a realistic context as weapons of war using standardized technology employed by military and paramilitary forces to project force) for tedious nerds to bicker over indefinitely, in the days of the original Gundam, that distinction did not exist. Indeed, to play for ratings, Yoshiyuki Tomino, famed creator of the Gundam franchise, had to make many concessions to his sponsors and make Amuro Ray's Gundam more like its more popular contemporaries, with goofy mid-season combination upgrades and some extremely anachronistic weaponry like a beam trident and a huge, MS sized ball and chain. On the back of his later success, Zeta Gundam and the seemingly never ending number of side-stories like War in the Pocket and Stardust Memory, Tomino would actually go on to revise the original series in a definitive movie compilation that cut out a great deal of filler and blatantly unrealistic (or at least immersion breaking) elements. This version is extremely good by the way. Give it a watch if you're interested in the genre's history or if you just like old sci-fi.
The reason I bring this up is sort of my roundabout way of arguing that while the Gundam of today is made of entirely different stock than Super Robots, the original article deserves a space in this discussion. The discussion being, of course, the distinctly anti-nationalist bent of a lot of early Super Robot shows. In all of its many incarnations, good, bad, and inbetween, Gundam is a story about war really sucking and how tragic it is that we fail to understand one another because it's easier to just kill one another instead. Now, of course, a lot of fans are either too thick to understand this subtext (and text-text) or simply willfully disregard it because they like cool robots that shoot lasers. Basically think of Dan Ryckert's relationship with Metal Gear. While certainly not all Gundam series have been good, they have always been faithful to these ideas, which is laudable. In broad strokes, anyway. SEED Destiny was pretty weird in spots.
Mobile Suit Gundam 079, which chronicled the One Year War, was not at all shy about this. The One Year War began as a movement for Spacenoid (a slightly ridiculous term for a person living in a space colony or on the moon) independence from the hopelessly corrupt Earth Federation. Naturally, the Federation did not take kindly to this and moved to suppress the movement, but found itself overmatched by the Principality of Zeon's advanced Mobile Suit weapons. To keep an even footing in the war, the Federation resorted to using nuclear weapons and other atrocities on largely civillian colonies to buy time as they developed their own brand of Mobile Suit. In retaliation, Zeon counterattacked with an even more devastating new weapon: dropping space colonies on earth. All told, the One Year War was not a good time to be alive, and nearly half of the Earth Sphere's total population died in one way or another. While all this was happening, the original founder of the independence movement died under suspect circumstances and power was seized by the Zabi family, who were Really Bad News. The Federation, meanwhile, turned to conscripting child soldiers in a desperate bid to keep pace.
This all culminated in the creation of the Gundam by Tem Ray, Amuro's emotionally absent father. Due to Circumstances, Amuro finds himself in the cockpit and becomes the most important soldier in the war overnight because the Gundam is several orders of magnitude more powerful than anything Zeon can field. The character of Amuro is explored most fully in Char's Counterattack, when he is a fucked up adult instead of a fucked up kid, but from the outset, Amuro is defined by forces completely out of his control and his fatalistic acceptance of his own lack of agency. Despite his nigh legendary piloting skills, Newtype powers of precognition and telepathy, and status as hero of the One Year War, Amuro might actually be the most passive motherfucker in the god damned galaxy. This puts him immediately at odds not only militarily but interpersonally with the dreadfully overambitious if mostly well-intentioned Char Aznable, his lifelong rival. Their entire history of conflict is based entirely upon the simple irony that they both want the same thing but, despite being Newtypes, lack the ability to understand this. The One Year War's violence and brutality defined them and their relationship to another, because of a petty twist of fate that put Amuro in the Gundam's pilot seat instead of some other sap.
Gundam uses many more overt methods of conveying that the One Year War is not glamorous or cool or just. Characters die regularly on both sides of the conflict, oftentimes for no real reason other than "this is war, sucker." Tomino developed quite a reputation for this style of storytelling, earning the moniker Kill-'em-all Tomino, especially in some of his non-Gundam works like Aura Battler Dunbine and Space Runaway Ideon. The entire continent of Australia got rendered uninhabitable by colony drops. The White Base, the federation battleship housing the Gundam, is crewed and staffed almost entirely by people who have yet to reach 20 years of age and they've got a pack of prepubescent toddlers running around on the ship because they've got nowhere else to go. I personally find the interpersonal conflicts acting as microcosm for ideology and war to be the most interesting, and most intrinsically Gundam thing about the franchise, but you don't have to go looking between the lines to find evidence of the show's ardent anti-war, anti-nationalist proclivities. The intensely nationalistic Zeon is surreptitiously usurped by a power-mad dictator without anyone even catching on after Ghiren Zabi uses a giant ass space laser to kill both his father and an influential Earth Federation general while they're trying to broker a peace deal. The death of that general, in turn, allows the worst elements of the Federation government to run amok and eventually create the deeply fascist Titans in Zeta Gundam, who make it a point of policy to oppress spacenoids as brutally as possible.
So Gundam, at least, has profound roots in the denunciation of military power as a metric of moral superiority. That's not really news to most people. Oddly enough, it's the most obsessive of fans that tend to miss the memo because they're presumably too busy making sure Mobile Suit measurements are exactly as documented and all character motivations are completely rational and logical, like them. Let's dig a little deeper for some more surprising examples of this kind of ideology in unlikely places. It should be noted, of course, that I am not heralding Gundam as some sort of bastion of progressive thought. Tomino's sexual politics are located roughly in the Stone Age until about 2000's Turn A Gundam, where they progress to about on par with inudstrial revolution social mores. Progress, I suppose. This is a problem with a distressing amount of media, especially in the 70s and 80s, but I'm trying to look at the bright side of things. At least it's not Cross Ange, right?
Moving on, when we look at the genesis of Super Robots as a genre of animation, we will invariably look to Go Nagai. Though a number of shows about large robot men fighting evil like Tetsujin 28 and the live action Giant Robo came first, the seminal Mazinger Z had the popularity and iconic staying power to define everything that came after. Though I could write a great deal about Go Nagai and his Dynamic Robots, they don't really pertain to my particular topic of discussion today because Go Nagai was about as progressive as a sack of bricks. His work was largely apolitical, at least in the sense that he did not intentionally make his stories about contemporary political issues, so at very least Kouji Kabuto never waxed nostalgic about the time Japan was allied with Nazi Germany. In fact, one of the show's major villains, Count Brocken, is a reanimated SS officer cyborg who carries his head around with him because of a decapitation in a previous life. Generally speaking, not a good or sympathetic guy, despite his protests to the contrary. Go Nagai focused on themes of brotherhood and being outcast by society for just being too damn hotblooded and having sideburns that were just too damn thick, though these mostly manifested in his manga. The TV adaptations of Mazinger, Getter Robo, and Grendizer were largely sanitized and inoffensive.
I mentioned Tadao Nagahama at the beginning of my piece, and it is now with him we come to a very important point in the genre's history. Nagahama was the director of three particular Super Robot shows: Combattler V, Voltes V (here the V is treated as the roman numeral, so it's really Voltes 5), and Toushou Daimos (roughly, Brave Leader Daimos). Colloquially, these three are known as the Nagahama Romantic Trilogy, and they are denoted not only by the iconic designs of the robots themselves, towering, blocky things made out of many constituent parts in a fairly sensical way (as opposed to the famously Unpossible Getter Robo), but also by the injection of genuine interpersonal and ideological drama into the proceedings. They were also super popular in other areas of the world, much like Go Nagai's Dynamic Robots. Voltes V in particular was popular in Southeast Asia. Combattler V was instrumental in cementing the notion of The Honorable Rival in the genre, a character aligned with evil that still conducted themselves with decorum. While you would find few such characters in the ranks of Dr. Hell's armies or King Vega's invasion force, in the Romantic Trilogy, they were critical to the show's success. Combattler V was not especially revolutionary, but it laid the groundwork for Voltes V, which in many ways was.
Voltes V is the tale of the Boazan Empire, an interstellar civilization with an expansionist streak and a highly stratified caste system. Unlike previous villainous organizations, the Boazans are noteworthy for being three dimensional and not painted in shades of black and white. The Boazans invade earth for the purposes of annexing it to their growing empire, with the crown prince Hainel leading the charge. Their battle beasts are too much for earth's military (and the militaries of many other planets), but the super electromagnetic robot Voltes V, piloted by a team of five headed by Kenichi, appears to beat them back. Things become interesting when we learn about Kenichi and his two brother's lineage. Their father, the brilliant scientist behind Voltes V's construction, is actually a Boazan expatriate. Not just any expatriate, but former royalty, no less. Boazan's strict caste system is based solely upon whether or not a citizen has horns. If they do, they're nobility. If they don't, well, uh, sucks to be them. Such a system, already untenable, is exacerbated by the fact that the vast majority of Boazans don't have horns. It's a rare genetic mutation. The whole Boazan war machine is powered by a gigantic underclass of slaves-in-everything-but-name. Kenichi's father believed that this was morally reprehensible and that reform was necessary. Unfortunately, this was not a popular opinion among the nobility, and he was disgraced, de-horned, and ousted for his ties to rebellion movements.
Complicating matters even further, he had a son while on Boazan, the aforementioned Prince Hainel. After relocating to Earth to escape persecution and devise some way of bringing change to the empire, Kenichi's father settled down and had a family. Now bereft of horn, he was largely indistinguishable from the average earthling. Parallel evolution is a concept emrbaced heartily by old sci-fi in both Western and Japanese media, probably because people thought alien babes were hot. Fair, honestly. At any rate, Kenichi engages in mortal combat with his half-brother's forces on a regular basis, which creates interpersonal tension mostly lacking in earlier shows. Sometimes Duke Freed got snippy at Kouji for being all love and peace at the Vegans but that was usually resolved at the end of the episode. Hainel himself gradually changes, too, starting out as arrogant, dismissive, and openly ashamed of his connection to a disgraced expatriate and his sons but gaining more depth as time goes on. The end of the show takes place on Boazan itself, with Voltes V spearheading a hornless revolution while Hainel turns on the emperor, vengeful and disgusted by his cowardice. Or maybe it was a movie. Look it's been a long time and I'm going from memory give me a break.
For a kid's TV show at the time, this was honestly pretty wild. Voltes V was not shy about displaying its moral core: people are not defined by the circumstances of their birth, and systems of government based upon the oppression of an underclass deserve only to be destroyed. Voltes V is not as morally complex as Gundam, but it is leaps and bounds ahead of many of its Super Robot contemporaries. Nagahama believed in a sort of fusion of genuine human drama and moral complexity with the more simplistic, bombastic style of storytelling common to his predecessors, and it resonated with viewers all over the globe. At the time of airing, a number of Southeast Asian countries were under the thumb of repressive dictatorships, and the final episodes had to be heavily censored and edited so as not to promote seditious ideas. That, more than anything to me, is the mark of something that is genuinely anti-nationalist in nature. Who would know better than fascist dictators themselves?
The final entry in the Romantic Trilogy, Toushou Daimos, continued the trend of creating morally and politically complex circumstances in which the karate robot made of transforming trucks must punch bad guys. The aliens of the day are the Barmians. The Barmians, however, buck convention and come to earth in genuine peace. Their story is a tragic one - their planet was destroyed in a catastrophe, and the survivors were evacuated on the aptly named mobile space city Small Barm. Due to severe space and resource constraints, a billion Barmians have to remain in cryogenic sleep while a skeleton crew of nobles and military officials keep Small Barm afloat as they search for a place to live. Naturally, they find earth to be a charming place as any to settle down (as it must have seemed in the early 80s before the environment started collapsing) and initiate negotiations with the governments of earth to try and accommodate their people. Expert martial artist and principle protagonist Ryuzaki Kazuya is the son of a brilliant scientist who created the robot Daimos and the special Daimolight energy that makes it so scary strong. Said scientist is part of the diplomatic delegation sent from earth to Small Barm (in some universes alongside the illustrious Rilina Peacecraft, but that is a story for another time entirely) and is a major proponent of the Barmian's request for peaceful integration into earthling society.
Regrettably, this all goes awry when the Barmian hardliner military faction assassinates the King of Barm during the meeting with poison and blames the earthling delegation on it, engineering their own perfect casus beli for a war of domination against Earth. Fascists are remarkably bad at sharing and getting along with others, as has been demonstrated. Prince Richter, the honorable if somewhat dim and hot tempered son of the King wasn't too hot on the assimilation idea because of his prideful belief that the superiority of Barm's culture and technology should allow them to dictate more favorable terms, but was ultimately loyal to his father above all else and acquiesced to the idea. When his father is assassinated, of course, he flies into a rage and declares earth to be the enemy of Barm and kills Kazuya's father. So there's a lot of bad blood between the two of them. Kazuya and Daimos stand up against Barm's battle beasts and prevents the invasion from progressing. He eventually meets and falls in love with princess Erika, Richter's sister. Where Richter is brash and hasty, Erika is intelligent and patient, and much more compassionate. These qualities allow her to see that the circumstances of the King's death, and any motivation the Earthling's might have had to assassinate him, were extremely suspect. They part ways, but Erika eventually joins a resistance faction on Small Barm against the military hardliners who had assumed power. Richter continues to dance to their tune, too consumed by misplaced anger and vengeance to see what is really going on. Erika's relationship with Kazuya only makes him more unreasonably mad.
Of course, Earth has its own hardliners, and in his battles, Kazuya not only has to contend with Barm's battle beasts, but General Miwa, an odious Earth-supremacist convinced that all Barmians, regardless of their disposition, must be eliminated immediately and without mercy. If we want to talk about more alternate universe scenarios, for reference, Miwa was a fucked up enough dude to cast his lot in with the Blue Cosmos organization after his Barmian extermination ambitions never panned out. He really fucking sucks. Ultimately, Kazuya and Erika manage to uncover the plot to assassinate the King, defeat the military holdouts, and bring the peace their fathers wanted about. Where Voltes V presented a scenario of a civilization run by ultra-nationalists needing to be restructured from the ground up, Daimos offers the inverse: a peaceful, tolerant civilization in a time of crisis gets hijacked by a few selfish, warmongering fascists and nearly destroys itself. Coming to understand and love one another, even when from different planets entirely, is an even bigger theme in Daimos than Voltes V, and is in many ways a more personal story. A romance, if you will, for a romantic trilogy.
Nagahama's Romantic Robots were well loved around the globe and left a lasting impact on their genre, encouraging those who came after to experiment with more complex themes and characters, even in the larger than life universe of Super Robots. While not all (or even very many) of these successors live up to this high minded ideal, it's an important part of the history of Japanese animation, proving that drama and politics were not just for Gundam or more "serious" shows. We can see the legacy of Nagahama in a number of more contemporary titles. Evangelion is so much more about interpersonal conflict than actual robots that the final episode of the TV series didn't even have any fighting in it (albeit mostly due to budget constraints). People hated it, of course, and Hideki Anno went on to make End of Evangelion to either appease or piss off further the angry fans, but it happened nonetheless. Gun X Sword represents an evolution of the genre into that of a pseudo-western, where heroes and villains are separated by the thinnest of ideological margins despite the fantastical robots and setting. Gurren Lagann briefly flirts with political complexity before promptly imploding on itself (maybe this one is a bad example). Even Shin Mazinger, an unabashed love letter to older Go Nagai properties, managed to create a surprisingly affecting and compelling character (dare I say, Protagonist?) in its reimagining of Baron Ashura.
The Mecha Genre used to be, and still kind of is, one of my big guilty passions in life. This essay is more personal in nature than a lot of my others, because from time to time I feel like I have to justify to myself why I like this garbage even when it's weird regressive shit. I guess the compromise I have found is that, in certain circumstances, it can be weird progressive shit, too.

Been thinking about gekka and igawa's bdays because of my juligawa brainrot. Well im going stereotypical now but igawa gives me very structured virgo vibes (im saying stereotypical because look at settsu fucking banri - a virgo but never fucking structured ehem). And as virgo starts late august/early september that gave me an idea. yes i wont let july live peacefully, your honor.
I mean imagine july getting shocked and caught off guard at Igawa's bday date if he was indeed a virgo born in late august. Igawa talking about a month and July misinterpreting it because of guilt creeping deep inside of him that he tries to ignore. Something along the lines of this:
"Igawa-kun, when's your birthday~?"
"why do you ask?"
"Well just because... Plus you celebrated mine already so I kinda got curious"
"Ehm, I dont think its that important to know but my birthday is at the end of August"
"August?!"
"Yeah, why are you so surprised, Kagerou-san? August, 8th month of the year, a summer month?"
"Ah y-yeah right. Of course thats what you meant."
"What did you think I meant?"
"Its... nothing really. I'll remember that, thanks"
No but listen it would be quite interesting seeing him all panicked like "wait fuck did he figure it out? shit I thought I was careful when did it happen what do I do? The organization will kill me if he knows. Okay, July just play it cool like always so he wont notice a thing" as he's usually quite composed and igawa is just unaware and confused in guy looking at him like "why u panicking I just simply asked. Are you okay? Im sorry, didnt know that a month can get someone this startled".
*Kagerou is a name people on ao3 picked for July as he didn't have any mission name stated in canon unlike chikage, hisoka or august.
TLDR: juligawa birthday talk gone wrong.

Oryx and Crake Audiobook Download
[Audio Books] Oryx and Crake Audiobook Download by Margaret Atwood
A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize
Margaret Atwood’s new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it.
This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. For readers of Oryx and Crake, nothing will ever look the same again.
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.
With breathtaking command of her shocking material, and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable realm populated by characters who will continue to inhabit our dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers.

Oryx and Crake Audiobook Download Reviews
Serhii Y.
Amazing book. Though the plot development is sort of predictable, the execution is flawless. Awesome characterisaton, so many little details that make the world and participants vivid and believable. I absolutely adored tie ins across many chapters to some background filling charachters like a 'reading of makbeth'. I had a several good chuckles and even a few loud ones which adds some sweet flavor into the mix of sorrow and even horror the book emanates. Lots of controversial themes are covered from eugenics to child pornography and even the latter the author managed to present in a standard-challenging ways. I had a blast, hope you will also.

I liked this book a lot. It’s classic Margaret Atwood, so if you like her other dystopian books, you’ll like this one too. I could have done without the kiddie porn. Oryx could have had a different back-story that was just as plausible. I liked the ending a lot, although I saw that other reviewers thought it was a cop-out. Ending the story with a big question mark about what will happen next gives the reader an opportunity to write their own ending.

Margaret Atwood can really tell a story and she can create a very credible guy protagonist.

I Loved this book! The narrative slowly unfolded and i couldn't stop listening! I love Atwood's dystopian future settings, and the way she incorporates science into her fiction without being completely over the top.

This is a Frightening but realistic view of where our world is heading, and should serve as a warning.

I think the idea of this trilogy was so creative, but poorly executed. The first book is about jimmy, then he barely makes an appearance in book 2 or 3.

This book is fairly long, but it has many elements I enjoy. It is a dystopian novel with elements of child abuse and neglect, terrible parental figures, an unreliable protagonist who is absolutely miserable, interesting female characters, and a devious anti-hero. It has sci-fi elements all throughout, including computerized components, hacking, genetically altered people and creatures, voluntary body modifications, and secret altering elements in the drugs. There are conspiracies and clones. I loved this book. If you are sensitive to graphic language--mostly sexual, including rape and child-pornography moment--and terrible events involving mass genocide of a species, you won't like it, but it is excellent. I cannot wait to read the others!

Wry, intelligent, unsentimental writing,,,good narrator...interesting characters...depressing (at times distasteful) apocalyptic subject matter.

I CAN'T GIVE IT LESS THAN 3 STARS CUZ I REALLY DIDN'T GIVE IT A CHANCE. I STOPPED LISTENING PRETTY EARLY IN THE BOOK BECAUSE THE WRITING STYLE WAS MAKING ME CRAZY. WRITING IN THE PRESENT TENSE IS VERY "JR HIGH" AND I COULDN'T GET PAST IT.

Oryx and Crake is an outstanding futuristic novel - with well-developed characters and a frightening scenario which involves genetic manipulation gone bad. Protagonist Jimmie, aka Snowman, moves the story along and links us to the misguided genius of Crake, the anti-hero. The female lead is equally mesmerizing. This is one story you won't want to turn off, and the final chapters constitute a very scary ride.

GCAP (Game Connect Asia Pacific) 2017 Day 1
I’m in Melbourne for GCAP and PAX Australia, and GCAP started today.
Sadly things were cut short by me BREAKING MY WHEELCHAIR in a DOOMED QUEST FOR A SMOOTHIE. I got a replacement, but it was a hassle and I needed to go rest afterwards. But what I saw of GCAP was good!
Below: descriptions of talks by Steve Gaynor and Karla Zimonya (creators of Gone Home and Tacoma) and by David Gaider (narrative designer on Dragon Age), plus misc other conference things.
There were three introductions, all about How Great The Melbourne Games Scene Is and how Everyone Is Friends And Awesome.
Keynote: Steve Gaynor and Karla Zimonya from Fullbright Games: The names didn't mean much to me but then I realised THEY'RE THE PEOPLE WHO MADE GONE HOME AND TACOMA :D
The theme of GCAP this year is The Ripple Effect, and the theme of this talk was how people connect and affect each other.
Steve and Karla met as part of the team for Bioshock 2. Karla was a researcher, and Steve a level designer, and when they were in those roles they didn't interact. But they both finished their assigned tasks and asked around for other things that needed doing, which led them both to the massive task of writing all the little bits of extra dialogue around things like what enemies say when they attack, flavour text on objects, optional little stories told through random audio diaries etc. They made a great team (Steve as writer and Karla as editor) and got really into it. I think you can totally see how this grew into their later approach to games.
The company 2KMoran being willing to let them develop like this was part of them being a good company, with many ex-employees who have gone on to make interesting games.
Steve then got to design his own DLC, and went I MUST BRING IN KARLA. And after they did that, and Bioshock 2 was done, they created Fullbright and started working on Gone Home.
At some point Steve encountered some cool Bioshock fanart and became mutuals with the artist on twitter. Since she was a lesbian, he asked her if she'd be up for discussing things to help with the game. She brought along her wife for an extra point of view. The wife turned out to be a 3D artist, and both of them ended up hired to work on the game.
David Gaider: Creating a World and Making it Stick
So this was like 50% general advice and 50% morality tale about the Hubris Of The Writer Who Thinks His Worldbuilding Stands Alone.
Basically he created all the basic Thedas worldbuilding by himself, then told the rest of the team, and worked with his writers, and never checked in to make sure the game worked as a whole until it was Far Too Late.
He was trying to create a relatively grounded, dark, realistic story...and the art team was making orcs and bikini armour. He had lore about the mages being too oppressed to learn offensive spells or do anything flashy in public, while the gameplay team was implementing fireballs, and specialisations like Reaver which were not connected to the worldbuilding at all. And by the time these incompatibilities became apparent everyone was committed and refused to budge. So the final game is a hodge podge of inconsistent parts that all make sense individually but don't fit together.
Now my general notes:
He scrawled out the original Thedas map on paper the same way he would for a D&D game (his original draft looked very Middle Earth-ish in style), expecting someone who knew geography would go through and fix the rivers at some point. They did not.
One lesson he learned is that you can't just throw pages of worldbuilding at people and expect them to both read and be engaged with it. You have to have a "razor", a short description of the core of the game, and make sure everyone understands what it is. Anything that doesn't fit the razor gets cut. For example, DA2 had themes of The Price of Freedom, Family, and All Things Change. And you have to sell them on why your worldbuilding elements are interesting, and what makes them cool. Once the art team understood what darkspawn were they got invested and redesigned them to not just be orcs.
Remember to feel: Don't just come up with the history of your city: what is it like to visit, is it loud and friendly and sunny or oppressively silent?
Pick your battles: choose the parts of your worldbuilding you really value and emphasise those, be willing to let the others go, especially if it’s to follow changes that make the game more fun. The game being fun is the final aim, your worldbuilding is just a tool to get there.
He got confused by his cursor a lot :)
One good thing about the DAO worldbuilding is that he didn't know where it would be set at first, so worked out all the history for everywhere, and that added lots of depth.
Names are the devil, totally subjective so everyone argues about them and hates any new suggestion. Many names for DAO were bandied about, like "Chronicle". He has a rule to never put Shadow, Dark or Blood in a list of possible names or the publishers will go THAT ONE.
His two rules: 1) People aren't allowed to complain about a name unless they have a better suggestion. 2) Wait six months. Chances are people will be used to it and not mind any more.
When the Grey Wardens were first suggested they were supposed to be pretty minor, based off the rangers in Tolkein. So they got named the White Rangers, but that was too similar, so White Wardens, but that wasn't morally grey enough, so: Grey Wardens! Which was fine until they turned out to be important, people suggested "cooler" names like Blood Knight Brotherhood/Lords of War/Disciples of Pain (not sure if he was joking) but he waited six months and took a vote and lo, the old name stuck.
Track your changes.
Have an elevator pitch (not the same as the razor) If you can't come up with one your concept needs work.
Question your biases. He was originally inspired by Middle Earth and D&D, and his own ideas of Medieval Europe...all of which are way too white. Some of this could be fixed in later games, but the world he created closed off a lot of possibilities (he didn't say any examples but I guess he meant, like, Africa and Asia equivalents)
When he took inspiration from Jews and Romani for the elves he thought he was being very clever, and only later realised that this created all sorts of unfortunate implications, since now anything that happens to elves seems like a statement about those cultures.
He was happily surprised to be able to include bi characters in DAO.
The writers were all pretty happy with how they'd handled gender in DAI, then the Voice Over person was like "why are the vast majority of our lines for men?" and they realised they'd all made most of their background characters men for no reason.
At the start it's hard to walk the line between a long, boring, exposition heavy intro, and players getting confused by lack of explanation. (It felt like he wished players would just be smarter lol) He said "If DAO had started at Ostagar then the PC's backstory would have felt irrelevant" which made me think "So like DAI?".
Players have to know why to care about an event before it happens, or the emotional reaction will fall flat.
When you introduce the first member of a group, they should be fairly typical so the player gets a feel for the default. For example, Sten is a pretty typical Qunari. Only after that can you introduce outliers like The Iron Bull.
Every main character the player interacts with (for a RPG, the party members) should represent a different interesting facet of the worldbuilding.
They didn't think DAO would get sequels, and thus had those wildly differing epilogues. He isn't sure he'd change letting the player died, since it was a cool moment. But it was certainly inconvenient to deal with later.
They had a rough idea of how the history of Thedas would continue after DAO "but no plan survives contact with the enemy, in this case I guess that's EA" loll
Having player decisions affect so much has been a bit of a nightmare.
Card tricks in the dark: if you do something clever and the player doesn't notice, it doesn't matter.
If the enemies drink potions and it's not obvious they're doing it, it just looks like the AI is cheating. If a choice affects the plot but this fact isn't made clear, players will just think that's how the plot always goes. Need to heavily lampshade that this is the consequence of that choice. And keeping track of all the possibilities gets ridiculous with characters like Alistair, who can be any one of dead/king/a drunk etc.
The players who DO pay attention to these changes tend to want way more reactivity than is practical. So nobody is impressed. And most new players found the save game editors confusing and off putting. He thinks perhaps it would be better to have a smaller number of major choices.
He's not going to judge other writers but the HUGE changes at the end of the Mass Effect trilogy mean they can now no longer set anything in that galaxy again.
Question time!
Something about the process leading to Krem being written. He talked about the bad stuff previously, and them realising they'd screwed up. A trans fan on the forums said "Could we have a trans character who isn't a sex worker or the butt of a joke?". They got jumped on, but the team read it and went "Oh."
Gaider wrote Maevaris in the comics, talked to a trans woman friend about it. One of the other writers was working on Kress...*audience shouts KREM* and he seemed a bit boring so he got made trans, since it added some interest and fitted in well with the worldbuilding about the Qun etc.It would have been better with a trans voice actor but they couldn’t find one.
What program is best for explaining stuff to the art team etc early on: Biowre had a sort of Grey Box level for playing through choices, but something like twine is good, just to test pacing. (not sure this actually answers the question asked)
Are there any genres you would like to work on but haven't: Yes :D :D But he can't tell us about it yet :D :D
He got sick of high fantasy after ten years. Would look longingly at Mass Effect sometimes just for a change but then they would implode and he'd think"Actually I'm fine".
Off the top of his head: Victorian London, finding husbands for your girlfriends while fighting zombies and also it's a Western?
Misc other things: I didn't make it to any more talks because Wheelchair, but met some cool people, and played some of the student games on display. My favourite was a time travel murder mystery called Lacuna where you have to connect clues. Apparently I was way better at it than most people :D I also actually enjoyed one of the puzzle platformers (I forget the name but it's about a little grumpy blue hexagon), which is a pretty big achievement.
GCAP has a "food intolerances station" with special food options and knowledgeable staff which was pretty great. Morning tea was just various gluten free biscuits, but for lunch there was poached chicken and salmon and various plain chopped vegetables, as well as dressed salads and gluten free bread and dessert. I could eat about 1/3 of it which is pretty good odds, I ended up happier than my partner who doesn’t have as many intolerances but just didn't like any of the food options.

Marc Laidlaw claims any story can be improved by making the second sentence “And then the murders began.” Let’s test that theory with random books I have lying around the apartment.
1. Magyk, by Angie Sage
“Silas Heap pulled his cloak tightly around him against the snow. And then the murders began.”
2. Daring Do and the Marked Thief of Marapore, by A.K. Yearling (with G.M. Berrow)
“The colossal silver Unicorn glanced back at his mud-smeared flank and cringed. And then the murders began.”
3. A Spell For Chameleon, the First Xanth Novel, by Piers Anthony
“A small lizard perched on a brown stone. And then the murders began.”
4. Paper Towns, by John Green
(not counting the prologue)
“The longest day of my life began tardily. And then the murders began.”
5. The Chronicles of Prydain - Book 1: The Book of Three, by Lloyd Alexander
“Taran wanted to make a sword; but Coll, charged with the practical side of his education, decided on horseshoes. And then the murders began.”
6. The Magician’s Nephew, by C.S. Lewis
“This is a story about something that happened long ago when your grandfather was a child. And then the murders began.”
(doesn’t work too well here)
7. The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien
“There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And then the murders began.”
8. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. And then the murders began.”
9. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien
“When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton. And then the murders began.”
10. The Tanakh/Holy Bible, by Multiple Authors
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And then the murders began.”
11. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling
“Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. And then the murders began.”
12. Standard Hero Behavior, by John David Anderson
“On the corner of Oak and Smelter sits a box made of wood warped by sun and bowed by rain, and on a splintered post just in front of this shack sits a sign. And then the murders began.”
(Almost works?)
13. The Call of Cthulhu, by H.P. Lovecraft
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all of its contents. And then the murders began.”
(Doesn’t work)
14. A Game of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin
“‘We should start back,’ Gared urged as the woods began to grow dark around them. And then the murders began.”
(this is hilarious because this is exactly what happens in AGoT)
15. Dealing with Dragons, by Patricia C. Wrede
“Linderwall was a huge kingdom, just east of the Mountains of Morning, where philosophers were highly respected and the number five was fashionable. And then the murders began.”
16. Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke
“Rain fell that night, a fine, whispering rain. And then the murders began.”
17. The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan
“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood. And then the murders began.”
(this technique tends to not work on first-person books, I’m noticing)
18. The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer
“In the beginning there were thirty-six of them, thirty-six droplets of life so tiny that Eduardo could see them only under a microscope. And then the murders began.”
19. The Colour of Magic, by Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP buddy)
“In a distant and second-hand set of dimensions, in an astral plane that was never meant to fly, the curling star-mists waver and part... See... Great A’Tuin the turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on its ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters. And then the murders began.”
(doesn’t work well at all, but more people need to read Terry Pratchett’s books, they’re wonderful)
20. The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket (with Daniel Handler)
“If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. And then the murders began.”
(doesn’t work here, noticing that it also doesn’t work if the narrator monologues before the story starts)
21. “Who Could That Be at This Hour?”, by Lemony Snicket (with Daniel Handler)
“There was a town, and there was a girl, and there was a theft. And then the murders began.”
22. Gulliver’s Travels, by Johnathan Swift
“My Father had a small Estate in Nottinghamshire; I was the Third of Five Sons. And then the murders began.”
23. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
“Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. And then the murders began.”
(doesn’t quite work, again due to narrator monologue)
CONCLUSION
It sort of works much of the time in third-person works that jump right into the story, but tends to not work on first-person books and books that start with a narrator’s monologue.
