“[Barbie Fashion Designer] was a bestselling software title in 1996,” said Rachel Simone Weil, video game historian and founder of FEMICOM Museum, which preserves the history of girls’ toys and games, to Polygon. “How amazing that we collectively completely forgot about it, and then it was able to rise back up into the collective consciousness, where it is today. There’s another timeline where that never happened, and it just stayed in obscurity. This is one of those rare cases. For every one of these, there’s 10 that we’re never going to know about.”
[...]
“I had an exhibit that was a couple games under glass at a museum,” she said. “It was vandalized by a woman who was upset that I was portraying women with these stereotypes.” She said there was pushback, too, that these games shouldn’t be held up as goals, that they didn’t count. “I found it quite difficult to contribute to video game history and walk up with a stack of Barbie CD-ROMs and say, ‘Hey, I’d like to add this to video game history.’”

015: Girls’ Fashion Shoot
Tumblr media
CANON FIRE is made possible by the generous contributions of readers like you. Support more writing like this on Patreon. Thank you!
Girls’ Fashion Shoot is the second or third entry in the "Model Debut" series, made as a tie-in for Nicola, a Japanese fashion magazine aimed at young teen and pre-teen girls. It's hard to say exactly which entry this is, because even Japanese Wikipedia's page for the series is little more than a stub (1). Girls’  Fashion Shoot is the only one of these titles that's been localized here, and aside from some unreadable scans of Nicola covers in certain backgrounds, all traces of the Nicola branding have been scrubbed.
Playing this was the first time that I'd felt entirely out of my depth when covering a game for the series. Not because it's complex--in fact compared to a lot of other "games for girls", GFS is incredibly straightforward. Something like Style Savvy often has plenty of simulation or management aspects, and even the casually paced pets sims can give you plenty to think about over the long term. Instead I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choices it gives you before you even start the game.
Tumblr media
Immediately, Girls’ Fashion Shoot bombards you with questions like your lucky number, favorite color, printed patterns, and favorite style, with differentiation between the general image (cute, cool, tomboy, sporty etc.) and the formal style (prep, lolita, Bohemian, BCBG), all with the assumption you understand what these mean. Some fashion styles I hadn't even heard of before, so before the game even began I was doing frantic web searches.
Tumblr media
After this little quiz you immediately get thrown into making an outfit for your first fashion audition, with zero character customization outside of hairstyle or eye color. Given the huge focus on personal style, I was honestly shocked to see you couldn't change anything about the character. It became the first personal friction point of many. It's possible that this was also a budget consideration, since later titles in the series have slightly more options (2), though you may or may not be surprised to hear there isn't much variety for skin tones.
By contrast the starting options for creating your first outfit are absurdly large. There's more options here than might be available in the entirety of a big budget game, all of which you get to keep afterward, and continue to add to afterwards. Clothing all have multiple tags for colors, style etc., which you'll need to make browsing manageable, and to help you meet magazine assignments.
Tumblr media
I found the magazine prompts helpful here, since they helped me narrow down which options I should be looking at, and focus on making one out of the ones that matched the theme. It helped me get out of my head when it came to my own personal preferences for styles and aesthetics.
Good or bad, I tend to end up projecting my sense of style onto characters I create in games, which inadvertently leads me to making pretty safe choices even when presented with tons of wild options. Having my options narrowed down, or straight up having outfits picked out for me, kept me from getting the usual aesthetic tunnel vision and made me more adventurous with my choices.
Tumblr media
Magazine layouts are a different beast. There's an almost Blingee sense of style to the decorative options given to you here. Sparkles, heart, diamonds, skulls--there's a whole suite of decorations and backgrounds to bedazzle your photos with. Personally, I often found this aesthetic kind of tacky, but in this context it works well, and gave me an appreciation of the hyper girly touch they added.
Girls’ Fashion Shoot's loop is so straightforward that most of my responses come from how I feel about character creation, fashion and personal aesthetics. The game's loop of taking jobs, designing outfits and layouts, and using the earnings to grow your closet and repertoire is so immediate and simple there isn't much to say about it. Yet it still ended up challenging me because of how it bumped up against how I play games and my own self-image. And this is before I get into any of the gender feelings stuff, which would double the length of this piece.
Tumblr media
Straightforward to the point of obvious, Girls’ Fashion Shoot is an everyday fantasy meant to be enjoyed for minutes at a time, but gave me enough to think about for an entire month. The nuances of what options they considered important, and what they cut in translating that for an English speaking audience, is fascinating in its own right. It's easy to take it on its face and see another simple entry in the catalog of girl's games, but with a genuine interest, and a little self-reflection, you'll find plenty to dig into.
Girls Fashion Shoot is available on 3DS via retail and eShop, at until the eShop closure in 2023. As an aside, hacking a 3DS is easy, anyone can do it.

Honestly, I was talking to my brother and got another idea for a game. Especially after Princess Peach Showtime.
I'll preface this by saying PPS is the perfect game for girls and women imo. Female main character, outfit changes, aesthetic color scheme--everything about the game gave me nostalgia and it isn't even out! I'll be looking forward to playing it (if I have the money 😷) because it makes me actually feel like a female without the color pink as the only color or horrible gameplay attached to it.
But it's sad as hell that it takes so long for something like this to come out. I got Super Princess Peach a few years after it came out and as a little girl, that was the most enjoyment I got out of a game that didn't have hot male characters keeping my attention.
Obviously, the main issue is men game developers. I'm not gonna be all "video games are men's fantasies and bla bla" I don't care because all I want is for some games to be a woman's fantasy ☺
If I knew a female game developer, I would help her in a heartbeat to make a game that actually caters to what women look for in games. Men can keep Cammy being literally butt naked if I also can get Lee Chalon in more swimwear 😌.
I understand the sentiment of girl gamers and that if games didn't have "heterosexual man juice" sprayed all over it, things would be better for us; but it's not gonna change and I wouldn't want it to because I grew up with games that had big breasted women and useless damsels I had to save, and I love some of those games *cough*DMC*cough*. I just want there to be more on both ends of the spectrum.
So, honestly, that's my TED talk, but I at least wanted to show the kinds of ideas we could be getting alongside our usual games.
~Read on if your interested~
Speaking of usual, where is the Huniepop with male characters 😤
Like, do people not realize that a game full of hot dudes with the main point being to engage sexually with them would be the first thing I'll throw $20 at?
Anyways 😀
My first real idea is a collectathon for house items, clothes/outfits, and other accesories.
Imagine Mario Oddessy, but just with the clothes. Instead of collecting the moons, you'd collect various items of clothing you could dress your character up in. A sofa for the house you live in or an accessory to style an outfit with.
I think, just maybe, there's a correlation with Animal Crossing and The Sims being popular with a female audience.
Personally, I don't like the current climate of ignoring a woman's natural interest in fashion and things that look good. I get that it's a stereotype, but all stereotypes are based in reality.
It's bad that girls are being shunned away from wearing a pretty outfit just because that's seen as "girly", but guys are "cool" when they have a good fit and even get praised if they "break gender roles" [insert sigh here]. I even think about how much this would help trans girls to discovery themselves more.
And it doesn't have to be something stereotypically female either. I'd never wear a skirt or dress, but you best believe if a flowy jacket or cute sweater came my way, I'm wearing that shit and I'd love to play games that allowed it, if they weren't unplayable and unbearable.
I usually hate platformers, but I'd love one if my objective was to get clothes and other designing items for a house or my character.
Next Idea
Obviously, VNs are usually the games associated with women, but I'd enjoy one that had gameplay on the side. You know, scratch the itch that Obey me! just doesn't.
Obey Me! Is perfect having guys who are likable without forcing random female hate as "conflicts". However, there's nothing to the gameplay so I'm usually pretty bored after a while.
And even if there is some kind of gameplay, you usually are forced to be romantic and there's no platonic options. Like, I was reading a post by Hamilton Hour and a review said exactly how I feel, they said this:
A lot of the time, I feel like romance games often push you into pursuing a relationship with someone, and when you don’t, the character will get sad and then you feel awful about it.
Original Post here
And no truer words have been spoken!
Seriously, what is with games doing that? Why not give us more content in the game and make all three if you want. Like Stardew Valley, there's options to be an asshole, to be platonic and options to be weird/overtly romantic. It makes it interesting to replay the game and see different choices.
I got off track though, back to the VNs with no gameplay. I really mean for there to be more romance oriented VNs with male characters that have gameplay. Like, Phoenix Wright, Danganropa, or Professor Layton but with romance lol.
I say this because there's tons of dating sims where the primary objective is to date women and they're always super good. Again, if anyone needs help I'd be willing to work on creating a story. Just ask.
Next idea
This isn't really an idea, but just something I wanted to say.
I super want more fighting games with male options that don't look like they were made for no one to love. I just think it's so convenient that female characters who are made to be "unattractive" are still the prettiest things on the planet.
Also, has anyone ever noticed that male characters in fighting games that are attractive are always married or devoted to another? However, most women aren't. Like Mortal Kombat for example. Now, I don't play this franchise so I could be wrong, but I have seen it and try and keep with the latest releases.
And I just happened to notice that the human characters who are male are usually married or dating someone.
On the opposite end, females in Mortal Kombat are either widowed, single with someone who has just a crush on them, or so butch they don't care for romantic relationships.
You can't be more blatant than that.
Street Fighter takes the design approach to turn away women. Seriously, name one male character from SF who's traditionally attractive then name a female, I guarantee you, you'll run out of men.
Then there's Tekken, my favorite.
Tekken is my fav for that very reason. There's a wide range of characters who have no romantic involvement, but they look human and *gasp* they're attractive?? What kind of sorcery...
Lee Chaolan
Hwoarang
Jin
Leo (ik they're essentially non-binary, but all that means is both get a victory)
Shaheen
Miguel
Hell even Paula and Law fit this imo.
And my personal fav, ❤ Dragunov ❤
I know he doesn't (sometimes) fit the traditionally attractive group, but bro have you seen some of his renders?
Tumblr media
Idk I just find him pretty
Bite me any day sir *rawr xD*
Yeah he's 27, and looks about 40, but someone likes that irl (aka me) and I ain't special. So I know others would probably appreciate the older looking gentlemen type and not just the baby faced hottie (dilf come on).
Any-fucking-way
Next Idea
The last thing is more related to writing than an actual game idea.
You know how in Zelda you're saving... Zelda?
Well, why the hell isn't there a game where I'm saving Link (and no, the CDi games DO NOT count).
I mean in general, I'd love a game where you play as a heroine and you're saving a male character. Don't even get me started on the many ways that could work.
A god is wounded and it's up to her to save him
A prince is captured while on enemy lines, no one else is capable of infiltrating but her.
Needing a vessel, your childhood friend's body is snatched
Afflicted by a curse, she knows where to find the remedy
Like come on, is it that hard to make a male in need? No it's not, dudes are human too and sometimes they need help. Enough with this solo shit, if men could be alone than why the hell do they all want girlfriends or need wives make it make sense
All this is to say, female coders, developers, writers, we need ya'll 🗣🔊
And as I've said throughout this, I would not be opposed to helping someone create the story of a game they're developing.
Thanks for reading, if you got to this point, be sure to take care of your self, drink some water if you haven't or get some sleep if it's late 🍂
~Buh-bye now~

It really frustrates me how underserved women are in video games. It's certainly better than it used to be and I am forever going to be claiming games that men like as "girly games" in order to make dudes mad (Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, etc), but it would just be really nice to have some good quality, AAA budget game for women and girls.
I want well made games made for me, not just games made for men or that I might happen to enjoy.

terfs celebrating that the international chess federation has banned trans women from competing in women's FIDE competitions, because it's sooooooo feminist to argue that women are so biologically inferior and nowhere near as smart as men and thus can't play chess on the same level. girl that's not feminism that's literally just misogyny

014: Futrai wa Precure Max Heart! Maji? Maji!? Fight de IN Janai
Tumblr media
CANON FIRE is made possible by the generous contributions of readers like you. Support more writing like this on Patreon. Thank you!

Based on the anime series of the same name, Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart does a respectable job of translating both the aesthetic and action. Importantly, it's clearly made for the same audience of young girls the anime is aiming for. There’s the same sort of pastel and pink aesthetic, with a big emphasis on cute and appealing designs, but with a more traditional action game structure.
Tumblr media
"Games for girls'', at least here in the US, often tend to focus on more traditionally "feminine" pursuits, such as dressing up, or nurturing animals, often taking the form of puzzle or mini-game collections (1). By their action focused nature, adaptations of magical girl shows often get more chances to break out of that box (2).
Before playing this title I was only vaguely aware of the Pretty Cure series. The latest titles occasionally make some buzz around social media, and a few entries have been localized here, under the Glitter Force name, often with large changes. Watching the first Precure series (Futari wa Pretty Cure), what struck me was the weight and physicality of it. Other magical girl shows I'd seen often had an airy, fantastical style to them. Characters felt as if they could take a step right into the air, and often did. Pretty Cure emphasizes the action in a different way, with a desire to bring moves closer to real life martial arts. You can trace the momentum of characters through their exaggerated spins, and the way they shift weight for throws.(3)
Tumblr media
Precure GBA doesn't capture the exact same sense of weight, but there's definitely nods to it in the posing and moveset of the characters. There are three playable characters, which all share a moveset outside of aesthetic flourishes. Each has a basic three hit grounded combo, an air attack that chains into a drill kick with forward momentum, and a wall jump. It's less involved than its contemporaries, even in the girl focused space, more akin to something you'd see in a licensed title like Ghost Sweeper Mikami on the Super Famicom (4).
Honestly, outside of its aesthetics, it isn't that interesting as an action game, but the aesthetics count for A LOT. The bright pastels and cute character designs make it stand out a lot, probably heightened by devs often choosing to saturate the colors even more to make up for the GBA's non-backlit screen.
The game takes place in a theme park, with each world presenting a different area of it, and each level some section or attraction in it. Levels open with battles against objects or animals possessed by Zakenna, a dark being injected by the antagonists to create monsters, culminating with a setpiece or boss fight. Along the way are hidden decorations you can find to populate each character's room in another mode, and mini-games where you control the mascot characters as you collect pickups that contribute to earning another heart point.
Tumblr media
You'll probably want to do those bonus stages too, since this game is HARD. Despite what I said about the relative simplicity of the action, Precure is still willing to lay down punishment fast. There are no checkpoints, and you begin with only three hearts out of a max of seven, so a few mistakes and you'll lose an entire stage worth of progress.
Know the layout and avoid unnecessary fights and you can get through a stage quickly, but jump around carelessly or start a combo from a bad position and you'll be repeating levels fast. The attraction sections are probably the most frustrating part in this regard, since they often have auto scrolling sections that turn into  a test of patience upon repeating them a few times.
Tumblr media
What kept me playing was seeing all the small aesthetic touches for each new area. Enemy variety is astounding, and while they don't have a wide range of behaviors (mostly turning aggressive as you pass and chasing you) there's a lot of specifically themed enemies with their own unique animations. The slight change in costume and voice samples with each character adds a touch of variety, even if the moves stay the same (not unlike GS Mikami's palette swapped outfits per stage). The water stage even has an animation for flipping directions while swimming, which is cool even if it's slow enough to get you killed.
A serviceable licensed action game isn't much new, but there's something satisfying about seeing this show's particular aesthetics represented in one. Action games with girly aesthetics are novel in themselves, and even as Pretty Cure adds new entries to the series, action games seem underrepresented (5). Entries in other genres aren't inherently less valuable or anything, but the lack of girl targeted action games kind of speaks to publishers’ preconceptions that they can only sell games to girls within a preset range of “girly” pursuits.
Precure isn't as mechanically involved as something like a full blown brawler or character action game, but there's some small joy in seeing the anime's characters and world miniaturized for this handheld system.
