Code Black 1.11: “Black Tag“

Okay Folks, are you ready to talk about triage? About the National Incident Management System? About acronyms? About why doctors and firefighters do different jobs for a reason? About MORE ACRONYMS?

Then you’re ready for this post.

The other night I watched Code Black’s “Black Tag” at the suggestion of @7thchevronlocked. I’d never watched the show, but from what people have said, I was expecting a fair amount of accuracy.

I... didn’t find it. But what makes this episode so interesting is that while they portray procedure very poorly, they managed to very accurately represent the consequences of doing things the way they did them. If you ever want to know the why of “why do we manage emergencies that way” this episode does an excellent job of explaining it (I assume without trying to? Eh?).

The episode “Black Tag” centers around a multi-car pileup Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) on an LA freeway. The show’s main doctor characters are deployed to the scene of the accident to perform triage on the wounded and provide lifesaving medical interventions. The episode deals with having to make difficult triage decisions in order to care for as many people as possible while pushing the characters well out of their comfort zones.

Emergency Management Frameworks:

Before we get into the episode, I want to give you some background on Mass Casualty Incidents, or MCIs, as a whole. In very basic terms, MCIs are events in which the number of victims exceeds the minimum number of people required to care for them. This can be anything from someone giving birth in the back of an ambulance (2 patients, 1 EMT), to something like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina where multiple large agencies have to pool resources in order to respond.

Disclaimer: This, and a lot of things I talk about in this review, are outside of my normal scope of expertise. I do know more about it than your average bear, but if you see something that needs changed or could be explained better, let me know.

There is a standard system for how to deal with any and all emergencies (not just MCIs) in the US called the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS is an overarching document that lays the foundation for everything from how to share resources among multiple agencies to how to manage information to how to plan and coordinate a response to how to train staff and plan for the next emergency.

How NIMS uses people in emergencies is called is the Incident Command System (ICS- in hospitals specifically, this is called the Hospital Incident Command System, or HICS). ICS outlines a specific set of jobs and responsibilities for each person involved in an emergency response.

The first trained person to respond becomes the Incident Commander (IC). This responsibility can be handed off to someone else later if appropriate. In small scale emergencies, the IC may be the only activated part of the ICS. In larger emergencies requiring more people, people can be added to a command structure that looks like this:

Very few emergencies will require the activation of everyone and every group on this chart, but it provides a framework that can grow and shrink according to the needs of the emergency. For example, the EMT helping someone give birth would assume the role of IC, but all they may need to do as the IC is call in another squad to take care of the second patient. Meanwhile, this framework could encompass thousands of people in the event of a major natural disaster or act of terror.

In the case of an MCI like in the episode, the hospital would set up an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) somewhere in the hospital. EOCs are basically rooms with tables set up and people organized with differently colored vests that indicate their job during the emergency (this can be very different from their job the rest of the time).

At the EOC would be the IC, Command Staff (people with “Officer” in their title), and the Section Chiefs, along with a few people reporting to them each. At the scene, the rest of the Operations Section would provide the hands-on triage and immediate care and transport of the victims. If it goes on long enough, there may be people from the Logistics Section there as well providing additional supplies, as well as food and medical care for the responders.

For a hospital, the portion of the Operations Section in the field doing triage, care, and decontamination if necessary is called the Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT) lead by the HERT Leader.

In the episode there’s someone called the “Doctor in Charge”. I’ve never heard of this terminology being used (probably because there are only very rarely doctors who deploy to a scene, more on that later), but he was essentially acting as the HERT Leader. The location he was at with the tent would be called the Emergency Treatment Area (ETA).

That’s like, the barest-bones explanation of that. If that thrilled you, FEMA has free online courses (IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700) that will give you a much more comprehensive understanding for all different kinds of emergencies.

Also, are you, like, really done with the acronyms? I’m really done with the acronyms...

Assuming I haven’t now totally lost you, let’s talk about a few things that happened in the episode:

Just In Time Training:

The episode opens in the back of an ambulance that’s transporting the characters to the scene. Residency director Dr. Rorish and surgical attending Dr. Hudson provide something called “Just In Time” (JIT) training to the residents by describing triage and what will be expected of the docs once they arrive at the scene.

JIT training is a recognized way within NIMS to impart necessary training for situations that don’t come up often, but that require specialized training to resolve. Usually, this is emergency-themed training, such as Point Of Dispensation (POD) deployment, mass casualty decontamination procedures, ICS/HICS, or as in this episode, mass casualty triage. JIT works well because it means vital information is fresh in the minds of those using it, and requires very few resources (versus training and drilling everyone several times per year to keep the same level of readiness).

Triage might get a passing mention in medical school, but its not something any hospital-based doctor would be reasonably expected to know. That’s why they would need a JIT training to be able to do what they do in the episode (i.e. it wasn’t just exposition, it might have actually happened like this).

Unfortunately, as I got further and further in this post, I started to realize that a good 75% of the stuff that is poorly done in this episode could be traced back to the doctors’ super inadequate JIT.

Triage:

JIT is usually provided by someone who is very familiar with the material, something neither Dr. Rorish nor Dr. Hudson appear to be. In the episode, they describe triage in the following way:

Dr. Rorish: This is not first come, first served. Your primary job in your initial eval is to prioritize the patient.

Dr. Hudson: *handing out bags of triage tags* Each of you take a packet of tags. There are 4 colors. Green is for minor injuries. Yellow is for more serious injuries but not immediately life threatening. Red is for critical patient who won’t survive without treatment and transport. The black tag is for death or expectant death.

Dr. Leighton: Wait, expectant death? You’re saying we put a black tag on a living patient?

Dr. Savetti: You want us to decide who lives and dies?

Dr. Rorish: We want you to decide who’s life you *can* save- and prevent the next doctor or EMT who comes along from spending precious time on an unsalvageable patient.

In this exchange, Dr. Rorish is fundamentally right- when you have to process dozens or even hundreds of patients, you can’t get to them one at a time. The point of triage is to quickly classify patients by the order in which they require care. Then someone else comes through and provides care in the order indicated.

There are many different triage methods available, but the one shown in the episode is called START. START uses a 4-color system to sort patients and is widely used throughout the US. Dr. Hudson’s explanation of the categories is also technically correct, if significantly oversimplified. IRL, there are very specific criteria for the categories:

Green (Minor): Patient can walk

Yellow (Delayed): Patient can’t walk, but can control their own airway, are breathing less than 30/minute, have a radial (wrist) pulse, and can follow commands/answer questions appropriately.

Red (Immediate): Patient can’t walk, and one or more of the other conditions listed for yellow are not met (they may be breathing more than 30/minute, lack a radial pulse, and/or are confused).

Black (Expectant): Patient is either clearly dead, unconscious and not breathing on their own, or are otherwise unlikely to survive due to severity of injury and availability of resources.

Using this criteria does not mean a patient will be perfectly sorted every time (in fact, according to a study done in 2009, even well-administered START probably overestimates injury severity in about half of patients when compared to what the patient would eventually need medically), but the algorithm used to sort the patients is very fast and easy to teach and use, which is vital in this situation:

Triage is a dedicated job. A person working triage generally does not give any medical care- their only task is to determine what category each person fits into. The only exceptions to this are putting patient in recovery position to keep their airway open and the application of a tourniquet for severe limb bleeding. These are two very quick, bang-for-buck procedures that can be relatively easily used in this setting and won’t slow down the triager.

Speaking of that, time spent with each person is minimal. It may be a few seconds with someone who is obviously Minor, Immediate, or Expectant, but up to a few minutes for someone who is Delayed (due to needing to go through the whole algorithm). As soon as a determination is made, however, the triage person needs to move on to the next victim. The goal is to get through as many people as possible.

The consequence of not having a great JIT training becomes very pronounced here- in addition to spending way too much time with each patient, they also have to spend a lot of energy determining who falls into what categories. This then makes it a lot more difficult for them when a family member urges them to make another triage decision.

Doctors at the Scene:

In the episode, there were a lot of doctors who went out to the crash site to provide care. IRL, you don’t want doctors on the scene at all if you can avoid it. Here’s a couple of reasons why:

1. Doctors are not trained for fieldwork. Working in a hospital emergency department is very, very different from working on the side of the road in poor visibility with an overturned car that’s also on fire. EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, and police are all trained to be able to keep themselves safe in inherently dangerous situations. Since docs are not (at least, not in the same way), they’re a lot more likely to become another victim (as ____ did in the episode when she fell down the hill).

2. Pretty much any life-saving intervention that would need done on a scene like this could be done by a paramedic. Things like airways, emergency meds, tourniquets, IVs, IOs, fluids, splints, chest darts and occlusive dressings can all be provided by a paramedic or in some cases an EMT. Anyone needing more than this would be black tagged anyway, if only because you’re not going to have things like a portable ultrasound machine or chest tubes to do doc-level procedures.

3. Doctors are much more useful receiving patients at the hospital. In the hospital, not only are the docs kept safe, but they’re needed to do full trauma assessments and surgery and other definitive care. There’s about to be a surge of high-acuity patients that need care only docs can provide, and you want as many of them as possible ready to give it.

4. Doctors (and nurses, and paramedics) actually suck at triage. One thing about triage not talked about above is that anyone can do it. A good JIT instructor can train someone to use that algorithm in about 10 minutes even if they’ve never put hands on a patient before. And they’re probably going to be better at it than the clinical staff. Why? Because clinical staff know how to treat injuries. They know if they do just this one thing the patient has better odds of survival. You want someone who will go in and sort people without being able to do anything about their situation. Aides, transporters, techs, and students are great for this. Doctors and nurses? Not so much. Plus, as mentioned above, you need them to receive patients.

I understand they were doing this because the main characters were docs and it would be hard to do a whole ep of them waiting around in the ED for the incoming patients. But really. Doctors are expensive. Keep them where they’re useful. And alive.

A Note on Firefighters:

It’s not wholly fair to say that doctors would never, ever be at a scene. In certain cases it would be beneficial to have a doc on scene to do something a more field-friendly professional couldn’t do. I can’t think of a scene where the benefits would outweigh the risks at the moment, but it is technically a possibility.

If this happens, however, the doc is still just doing those specific medical procedures- they’re not triaging, they’re not managing resources, and they’re certainly not providing rescue services.

There were a lot of firefighters hanging out in the background of this ep. Do you know what firefighters do at a scene like this? They make it safe and they rescue people. Got an overturned car? Get a firefighter to stabilize it before you climb in. Car on fire? Firefighters are pretty good at putting those suckers out. Car fell down a hill? A firefighter can help you with that too. Got a car full of cement with a guy trapped inside whose slowly losing the ability to breathe and regulate his body temp? Slap a red tag on that bad boy and get a firefighter to pry open the door.

Rescue is their job. It’s what they’re trained for and what they’re good at. Half of the crappy things that happened in this ep only happened because the docs had no idea that firefighters are a lot better at rescue than they are.

Admittedly, their JIT training should have covered that. But once again, here we are.

Last Points:

That was a cool macgyverism warming the saline on the car engine. But hot damn, 4-5 L of fluid is a LOT of fluid to pump into someone with normal blood volume in a very short amount of time. That in itself could kill him by causing fluid overload or seriously low (relative) electrolyte levels.

Also that’s a lot of fluid someone else could use. I would have preferred to just support his breathing and warm him up later than waste all that fluid.

Stapling shut wounds doesn’t stop the bleeding. It just makes it internal bleeding. The blood is still lost. You could tourniquet that leg though.

Also who the hell brought staples to this scene??

You wouldn’t do a chest tube at the scene- you’d do a needle thoracostomy (chest dart) if absolutely necessary and transport ASAP.

You really, really, really wouldn’t do CPR on scene. Someone who needs CPR needs a black tag.

“If you knew how strong she was you wouldn’t be doing this” they captured a difficult part of triage really well with this line.

Promising someone that it will be alright or that you’ll find one of their family members is a really, really dangerous thing to do (and that does come back to bite Dr. Rorish, who should know better, in the episode).

That is not how you reduce (set) a shoulder in a remote setting. It can be done by tying weight to the arm and letting it hang over the edge of something. This doesn’t work quickly but it (probably) won’t screw your shoulder up too bad. Also she could have done a cricothyrotomy with one hand as long as she had an assistant.

Also even if she did reduce her shoulder, she wouldn’t have use of it back, just less pain.

There’s a monitor screen at the front desk too. If a monitor alarms at the bedside, it’s also alarming there. And the monitors can tell whether it’s actual asystole or the leads fell off.

And, finally, it wouldn’t have been nearly as dramatic (or even worth making an episode about) had the responders been given an adequate training, the doctors stayed at the hospital, and the firefighters been utilized according to their job description. In fact, they probably couldn’t have had an episode. ...And that’s kinda the point.

Novel Prep Tag Game: Deity Complex

My main was tagged by @captainrynna!!! I’m a couple days late, but thank you!!! I’m doing it over my secondary WIP, because I already had a drawing of the protag prepared and I wasn’t emotionally ready to commit to a design for Ember from Firebreathers. Because that’s how my brain chooses to do things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Putting a quick read more link because:

TW: death/car crash for questions 1 and 11. I’ll tag the post for it, as well.

First Look:

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences. There’s too much fucking corn in America.

More seriously, though: 19-year-old bus crash survivor tries to keep as far away as possible from the government that wants to use their mutation to commit war crimes.They do so by hitch hiking, stealing cars, and navigating the endless highways of the USA.

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? Probably just one book, around 100k words. It’s not the most thought-out of ideas yet.

3. What’s your novel’s aesthetic? I made a board for it on my pinterest, but there’s like. 4 pins. It’s hard to pin down (no pun intended), and the images on question 5 are also relevant to it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. What other stories have inspired your novel? This will sound weird, considering the lack of context for this WIP, but Captain America: Civil War comes to mind, as well as the Percy Jackson series.

Main Characters:

6. Who is your protagonist? Hunter Carrol, a 19-year-old ‘’’convict’’’ running from government research facilities whose experiments on them may or may not have eventually resulted in the deadliest weapon of war to date, if they had stayed.

7. Who is their closest ally? Viola Waters, once Hunter starts opening up to her.

8. Who is their enemy? Agent Markus Rutherford of the Federal Bureau of Switched Activity. He’s the agent who first brought Hunter to the FBSA research facilities, and he’s been on their tail since they escaped.

9. What do they want more than anything? They just want to see their parents, man. It’s been like, nine months, and shit’s been pretty traumatic. Mom’s cookies would be a real pick-me-up, y’know?

10. Why can’t they have it? The government has deemed Hunter too much of a danger to the public/asset to their research to let them go easily. So they’ve been endlessly following the signs of where Hunter has been to get them back.

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves? That they’re the sole reason 20 of their classmates died in a bus crash. I know, it’s dark.

12. Draw your character. I did this a while ago, and it’s actually also on my youtube channel, with a bit of a haphazard intro to them! The info in that vid is a little outdated, though. This is a zoomed in screenshot, cause I did it on a too-big canvas and never cropped it LOL:

13. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protag? Being brought back to the research labs again, with an even lower chance of being able to get out and see their parents.

Plot Points:

14. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story? Hunter will find out that they weren’t the only kid with a Deity Complex being detained in the FBSA research labs, and they’ll immediately want to get the others out, too.

15. Do you know how it ends? Not yet LOL, the story is barely developed further than two (2) plot points so far.

16. What is the theme? I know I want to explore the ideas of bodily autonomy/consent (if one can save thousands of others by sacrificing themselves, is it ethical to force them to?) and whether there’s ever a good reason to go to war.

17. What is a recurring symbol? I don’t really have a symbol in mind, right now... unless the smell of campfires and the appearance of white animals counts as, like, a symbolic representation of the two main characters.

18. Where is the story set? Mainly on the highways and backroads of the U.S., but general region depends on when in the story.

19. Do you have images and scenes in mind already? A couple, but nothing too specific, yet. I’m only like, 4.5k into writing it, and it’s the first time I’ve actually tried to pin down the idea. So I’m excited to see where it goes!

20. What excited you about this story? Being able to explore the Switched Universe, and also confronting themes that are integral to my view on activism!

21. What is your usual writing method? For this story, I only really write in it when I’m a.) stuck in Firebreathers, and b.) motivated to work on the next scene. So I don’t have a great method for this one yet, as it’s technically a side project.

My Heroic AU (Now With OCs)

Warning: Long(er) Post!

I’m back at it again with another thing explaining my Heroic Au. Figured that I should probably explain some of my OCs (even though the main four are technically OCs too, but shush). So, for those who are interested, click here to read my first post (for those who read it, now they got heights and ages) about my AU. I would say you don’t have to read that one, but it helps to get a gist of things. But if you dont want to, here’s the main idea:

Central/Main Idea: Mine are more on the chaotic good side of things than lawful because I find it more fun and they kind of explore the whole “if villains can kill and destroy and people just accept it, why can’t a hero do the same, especially when justified and with a corrupt justice system?” Basically, whenever a hero does anything like kill or destroy, no matter the reason, they are automatically seen as corrupt or they have a dying need to be stopped, even more so than villains. My Heroic characters basically exist to prove such a thought wrong…even if they aren’t the most mentally balanced people.

Also, I will be using imaged from others that I have commissioned/requested, while also tagging them. If they do not wish for me to use their drawings, then that is perfectly fine

Sayua Kobayashi/Cross-Boa (created by @little-geecko) Age: 34-35 Height: ~7 foot at full height, but can be about 6 foot 8 Job: Hero for hire/Archer Species: Naga (even though she doesn’t know how to shape-shift) Background: Very little is known about Sayua’s past, due to her being found as a baby in the middle of the forest…and her not willing to tell anyone about her background. Her parents, who were elders, often taught her to stay within the wilderness and often keep moving, due to them being nomads. They also taught her how to live off the land, how to defend herself, teaching her archery and how to create/fix her own weapons.

Her parents ended up dying, due to natural causes, when Sayua was 19, forcing her to live on her own. She didn’t really bother moving from where they last had made shelter, since it was in a pretty well-protected and bountiful. And because she didn’t want to leave her adoptive parents’ graves. Everything was pretty calm as she did whatever she could to take care of herself, until a year or two later someone had ransacked her place and her parents’ graves were dug up.

Sayua was able to track them down easily to a small town and had gathered information from people (who she snapped at few times from them taking too long to answer her) from where the thief seemed to be located. When she found them, it seemed like she had found them also having an illegal pawning business where they basically stole whatever they could from people, sell it off, and run before cops are notified. Needless to say, she was going to give them hell for disrupting her peace and interrupting her parents’ eternal peace.When she came out with a few wounds, bruises and only a fractured arm, as well as the criminals being taken away, Sayua was approached by a man with a white top hat that was very interested in her deed. Personality: She’s a very strong-willed woman with a fiery temper, while also taking absolutely no shit from anyone. if you ever tell her that her short temper and snappy behavior is from being alone in a forest for so many years, she’ll tell you it’s not, while also holding a sickle to your throat. Despite her behavior, she also is a natural leader and will often take the lead or make the first move.

She also tends to be very indifferent to what your status is and what you have down. So, it’s pretty hard to intimidate her, but she does have her limits. just hardly ever shows them. Don’t expect her to be terrified of people like Demencia or Flug because the moment they breathe to even say one sentence, Sayua will yell, “HOLY SHIT! JUST KILL ME ALREADY!” …She’s impatient.

Despite all these “negatives”, she does have a soft spot that she shows from time-to-time and will often try to inspire younger heroes to work harder to be their best. …Does telling people that they will die if they don’t man up count as inspiration? Also, she may or may not be asexual. She just says that she would rather not figure out how snakes have sex. That and Lucius doesn’t make it any better with all the sex jokes he makes.

Lucius Wickes/Heartbreaker/Reaper (created by @skribblie) Age: 25 Height: 5 foot 8 Job: Hero for hire/Womanizer Species: Incubus Background: Lucius did live a pretty normal-ish life with his dad being a former demon from Hell that was one of Satan’s warriors, banishing all those that dare get in his way, and his mom being an accountant. He was raised and born in New Orleans, where his dad retired and met his mom. Lucius also met his ex-fiancee, Maria (yes, I know that Metauro’s ex-wife is named Maria. I made these backgrounds a long time ago…I am not changing anything). The two hit it off very quickly, due to Maria being immune to his passive infatuation ability and being more into just him, which he found absolutely incredible. He hadn’t really met anyone that wasn’t into him for simply being an incubus. Plus, Maria was also really into the supernatural, so that was something that put him at ease.

The two ended up leaving out of New Orleans to a smaller town that wasn’t even really on the map. Maria wanted to go there because she had always wanted to live a small, simple life and Lucius wanted to go there to propose. Unfortunately, neither got what they wanted.

Lucius refuses to say what all exactly happened, being vague on purpose to seem guiltier, except that her death was on his hands and that Maria’s last words were: “It’s not your fault.” …A man with a white hat also found him covered in blood, in the middle of a city that was littered with bodies, and had a thousand mile stare in his eyes. The only thing that made him snap out of it was of the man promising that he will make him atone for his sins. Personality: Lucius is a quick-witted smartass that really knows how to and when to get on somebody’s nerves. He has an extreme ego and isn’t afraid to boast about his best qualities He always looks for any opportunity to make an explicit joke or even to seduce someone. He will fervently deny that it’s some kind of self-medication and just say that it’s the price of being a demon. He also loves to play around or mess with people in any way that he can, even if it means that they may want to punch or kill him afterwards.

He’s the kind of guy that likes to cheat death or toe the line of danger, whatever gets his adrenaline pumping and unleashes a bit of the sleeping hellish beast within him. Whether that be through sex or even a bit murder, he’s all up for it. His preferred weapon is a hatchet or an axe.

Lucius can also barely control his demonic side and often keeps it under wraps. The only time he uses it is when in an emergency or when they both have a common end goal, which rarely happens. White Hat must be present when his demon side is let loose or else he’ll lose control fairly quickly and go on a rampage.

Lucius also often attends bars and even will be a bartender or even put on a show for the people. Anyone of any gender or configuartion loves him and loves them for helping him forget how much he hates himself.

Mari Belmont/The Marionettist (created by a friend and @redmoondragon-art) Age: 16 Height: 5 foot Job: Assassin for hire/Student Background: Mari was born without any powers or anything really all that unique. However, her father was researching a way to genetically engineer a hero. He didn’t really have any other test subjects, but Mari, who was 5 years old at the time, had volunteered to help him. Mari’s mom was against her helping her father, but after a long argument, she realized that she wasn’t going to win. So, she just only wished for her to be closely monitored and safe. There isn’t much to her background, since she’s so young, but the process to become what she is now was very long and grueling. She often remembers times waking up in the middle of the night in her test tube, almost drowning. Personality: Despite her age, Mari often is the mother of any group that she’s a part of. Always making sure that everyone is ready and taken care. She also had taken dancing and aerial silks lessons when she was around 10. It was just something that she always found interesting and graceful. Mari also loves any activity that requires any bit of creativity or using her hands.

Her powers also allows her use her strings like a tightrope, aerial silks (without even hurting herself), and that she can swing on. Not only that, but she also can use them to control peoples’ minds and make them like her puppet, which she often just makes them kill themselves with whatever is nearby.

She also is extremely playful and hyperactive. She will also defend the actions of her parents, especially to those that dare pretend they know better. She also attends White Hat hero academy whenever she has free-time. ..What do you mean you have to register?

Panna “Pan” Ward/Pandora (created by @lightpudding) Age: 10-12 Height: 4 foot 4 Job: Freelance hero Background: Pan was very sick when she was born, an illness that attacked at her throat. Luckily, she was saved, but it cost her her vocal chords, rendering her mute, excluding a few small, quiet noises. Her parents were pretty kept in the shadows, even keeping some of their life away from Pan. All that is known that they were into the dark magic and even, rumored, satanism.However, they made sure that Pan was given as much care and love that she deserved, even home-schooling her and teaching her a bit of sign language.

Unfortunately. Pan only knew her parents for 9 years, due to a random attack that happened in her house. She had no idea what was happening because her parents hid her away in a closet. When everything had quieted down, she found her house completely in ruins and her parents dead bodies. She also found a jack-in-the-box near their bodies that was latched shut with a note, reading, “Take this and defend yourself. You’re the new Pandora.”

Pan wasn’t afraid of the demons that lurked within, especially if it meant that they could help avenge her parents’ death. Personality: Pandora makes sure that everyone is okay before herself. It can even just be a random villain that she’s fighting. She’ll always come up to them with a small first-aid kit that she keeps in her box and makes sure they’re okay to go home. Although, a bandaid in a large, gaping hole in someone’s stomach may not help all that much. They still appreciate it though.

Her favorite demon in the toy box is a large creature that has hundreds of eyes all over his body, gnashing mouths, large, skin-tearing claws, and deep, timber voice that shakes the very ground. He has caused many deaths, made Satan himself even tremble in fear, created many widows, and has devastated thousands of armies. …Pan named him Lord Fluffybottom. He takes that name with great pride.

Pandora loves learning anything new and often will not ask for help, even if she’s too short to reach for something or has a hard time understanding. Pan also realizes that she is pretty much useless without her jack-in-the-box, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to help or fight, even if her hits amount to nothing. Luckily, not many people are willing to fight a defenseless child, even if she does take that as an insult.

Pan created the dress herself as a way to remember her parents, since it’s made from several pieces of fabric from their and her clothes. Not only that, but she doesn’t live in one place for too long and often moves from place-to-place. ~~~ I have more OCs, but they don’t have images and this going on for a bit long. I may make a part two. I hope that you guys like them and sorry if their stories may be edgy.

2. A songfic featuring Aubrey by Bread, studying Arthur and Eames and what their relationship might have been like before the Fischer job. The characters aren't going to resemble fanon (Arthur's closed-off persona and Eames's flirtiness). A fic about arthur and eames and their first meeting in the military to all their other meetings in the criminal underworld of dreamshare. not that long, i'm aiming for 2.5k or maybe 3k if i can. i wanted to focus on their totems and how eames could use forging as a totem (because if he can't forge then he must be awake, right?) but he has a totem just in case. and arthur has a totem (the die from the movie) that he uses a lot more except when he happens to be taken and tortured for some secret or another and the only thing that convinces his brain that he isn't dreaming is the way eames stands when arthur aims a gun at him? if that makes sense....

here's a little bit of what i have written so far:

he’s more surprised at the lack of surprise he feels when eames digs a poker chip out of his desk. its blood red with gold and white accents, worth five thousand dollars at the particular casino it came from, disregarding the fact that it was arthur’s shitty first and last attempt at a real world forge after he participated in a poker game eames held on base many years ago and realized half the chips in the set were fake, pocketing a one thousand dollar chip to use as a reference.

“our totems match,” eames murmurs, flipping the chip over his knuckles with a concentration a bit too intense for something he could do in his sleep (ha).

“match how?” he asks, sipping a glass of orange juice, freshly squeezed because eames wanted to use the electric juicer. he's tempted to pull out his die from his pocket and roll to see it land on five, even though he knows this isn’t a dream.

“i have something that you made, and you have something i made. also, there’s some significance with the number five.”

4. When dreamshare is first developed, no one has totems. They've always gone into dreams for short amounts of time and always with another person, so there's no chance of someone forgetting their reality. Mal's friend Pip has consistently been pushing the boundaries of dreaming, and one day she decides to go a later deeper without Mal. When Mal wakes up, she realizes that Pip is still asleep and she has to go down after her where she basically incepts Pip with the idea of totems.

5. There was a small lake behind Arthur's house. The following night, he sat at its edge and stared at the moon's reflection in the water.

Arthur turned. A man was sitting next to him.

"Hello," Arthur said. "Thank you for helping me get home last night."

The moon smiled. "How did you know it was me?"

Arthur rolled his eyes. He picked up a pebble and tossed it into the water, watching the waves ripple the reflection. "How can you be here and there at the same time?"

The moon leaned back on his elbows and stared up at the sky. "Same way I can be in the lake and the sky at the same time."

Arthur frowned. "That's not the same thing. The lake's just reflecting the light from the moon. From you."

The moon turned to smile brightly at him. "Well aren't you a smart one, hm?" He leaned in and whispered, "I'm a reflection, too. We all are, at the end of the day."

Arthur thought about that. It didn't make sense, but that didn't mean it was wrong. He looked up at the moon in the sky, then at the moon sitting next to him.

"My name's Arthur," he offered. "What's your name?"

The moon looked at him strangely. "Eames. You can call me Eames."

"I'm going to be an astronaut, Eames," Arthur said. "Then I can come and visit you in the sky."

Eames smiled again. Arthur wouldn't have thought the moon liked to smile. "I would like that very much," Eames said. "Very much, indeed."

11. Haunted House AU. Arthur’s working at a popular horror maze escape place to make some extra money over the summer. It’s far from his dream job—making minimum wage crouching behind dark trap doors and chasing random couples and tourists—but at least he gets to vent his frustrations about his coworkers (who are, frankly, driving him insane day by day) by literally screaming at customers. Then there’s Eames, who finds haunted houses boring, overrated, and not the least bit frightening, but is willing to humor a friend (Ariadne?) by accompanying her. But an encounter (and some painfully obvious flirting) with the cute guy under the ghoul mask is enough to make him want to come back again, and again, and again—

- Cobb as the owner/boss and the only guy who actually takes his job seriously. He probably squints a lot because sunlight genuinely hurts his eyes lmao - Mal as his wife, who used to be an actress but left to start a business with Dom. Super sweet and kind of protective of their employees. Plays the main ghost. She’s terrifying. - Yusuf doing their costumes and makeup!!!!

- Arthur getting the job in the first place because his screams are so full of rage (let! him! rest!)

- Eames blowing all his cash on haunted house admission fees so he can flirt with Arthur (who plays different roles on different days, maybe? but Eames can always recognize him, even under the masks/makeup)

And it annoys him because he has a track record of being able to freak out anyone. He takes it upon himself to make him scream at least once (I haven’t decided how he does, but he does, eventually. Eames probably jokes about screaming with something other than fear, but i am too babey to write any sexytimes)

Dumbass Drunk College Students coming in all wanting to prove to their friends that they're the Alpha Male, picking a fight and being super violent/rowdy/destructive, + arthur getting hurt/generally kind of shaken up; that’s the first night he lets eames really talk to him outside of the job, maybe even lets him take him home (i dont know if im including this scene for sure but..perhaps)

- Ariadne getting them banned from the haunted house after reflexively slapping Arthur in the face with a rubber snake (Cobb takes the ‘no touching the actors’ rule seriously—especially after what happened^). Eames thinks he’s lost his chance for good, but Arthur finds him outside and finally makes the first move :)

12. Arthur is in love with Eames, and he's pretty sure Eames is at least interested in him back. Only problem? Arthur is ace, and not at all sure how Eames is going to react to that. But Arthur's going to talk to him about it, because the alternative is to lose even his friendship with the forger, and that's just not on.

Only the team is also determined to set the two of them up. Will that end up being a wrecking ball to Arthur's fragile attempts at making things work with Eames?

STORY OUTLINE:

Arthur is ace, and no one knows. When Eames invites Arthur to join him for Christmas, Arthur panics and says no - and spends the whole of Christmas regretting it. The team comes back from Christmas break, and everything is awkward. Arthur knows he has to say something or ruin his relationship with Eames forever, and he's going to do that at the New Year's party where Eames will hopefully be in a good enough

But unbeknownst to him, he's not the only one who's realized something needs to happen. Cobb, Ariadne and Yusuf agree that an intervention is in order. And when better to set their two friends up than at New Years? Get them kissing and surely the tension between them will resolve itself.

What could possibly go wrong?

At the New Year's party, Ariadne suggests playing a game of spin the bottle. Arthur is less than enthused, but Cobb and Yusuf both back up the idea. They play a few rounds before it lands on Eames, whom Ariadne dares to make out with Arthur.

There's an awkward beat before Eames moves to do it. Arthur reacts by freezing and shying away physically. Eames takes this a rejection and leaves the room. Arthur sits there, frozen, and then leaves too.

He goes to the bathroom and breaks down, blaming himself for being so stupid and backwards. Eames hears him, and comes in and comforts him. Once Eames realizes what the problem is - that Arthur is ace - he promises Arthur that it doesn't matter to him, he just wants to be close to him. Cue happy end credits.

14. Arthur has a goldfish which, long story short, he has convinced himself he only needs to keep alive to prove he is not a hot mess. Except now it’s not looking so good and has a weird sore on its side and he doesn’t know what to do but he can’t just let it DIE. So he takes it to the vet and is scoffed at and told it is a feeder goldfish, they cost less than a dollar, just get a new one.

Two vets later and he’s at the end of his rope when he meets Dr Eames, whose dog is introduced as his PA and goes on all his rounds with him. Dr Eames doesn’t even question it, just starts the exam and tells Arthur to pet the dog and start at the beginning while he works.

15. Eames is working with Arthur the first time in a long while, only now it seems that he has a huge crush on Arthur. He doesn't know how else to get rid of the crush and he really can't concentrate on the job when he's thinking about Arthur all the time, so he asks Arthur to have sex with him, to get the crush out of his system. Arthur agrees surprisingly easily and sex is great, but afterwards Arthur doesn't seem happy and Eames' crush is worse than ever. The more Eames tries to get rid of his crush, the more it sticks, and the less Arthur is talking to him. After the job, Eames has some time to think and he realises that maybe neither of them really wanted for him to get over Arthur. He goes to see Arthur to talk to him about it, but they end up kissing and stuff as well.

Ranking Luffy's 20 Best Knockouts For The One Piece Anime's 20th Anniversary

We love One Piece because of its themes - the idea that, because the ocean is so vast, you'll one day find a place where you belong. That even though others may tear you down or forget about you, your dreams will never die. That it's your duty to stand up for your friends, because you know they'd stand up for you. Those are all beautiful and well developed motifs in the One Piece world. But you know what else is beautiful and well developed in the One Piece world? Luffy's ability to knock someone out.

Thanks to Luffy's grit and Gum Gum powers, we've been treated to some of the best KO's in anime history in One Piece. And I think, since the 20th anniversary of the anime is October 20th, 2019, we should celebrate twenty of them here. And I think, in the first spot, we should have...

20. Don Krieg

I'm gonna start with this one because it always felt like Luffy, using Gum Gum Gatling, and then Gum Gum Pistol, and then 2 Gum Gum Bazookas, and finally finishing off Krieg with Gum Gum Giant Gavel, was executing a combo move. Like if he'd accidentally pressed X instead of B at the end there, he would've gone for another Gum Gum Pistol and lost the quick time event.

19. Charlotte Cadenza

This one earns a spot on the list because of the desperation of it. We don't usually see Luffy go all MMA on someone, but in trying to make his way back to meet Sanji, he chokes out one of the big quintuplets. That's raw, and I hope that, when Luffy finally faces down Blackbeard again, he busts out a Rear Naked Choke on him or at least a Kimura Armlock.

18. Holdem

This obviously isn't the first Red Hawk that Luffy's ever used (Other notable uses include his fight against Byrnndi World in the 3D2Y special, against Hody Jones, and in that awesome tag team attack with Law against Doflamingo.) But with work by key animator Takashi Kojima, his Red Hawk against Holdem is especially beautiful. I could watch it all day. And I have.

17. Oars

Luffy gets the chance to knock out not one, but two giants in Thriller Bark, with the first being Oars and the second being a Gecko Moria that's gone all Shadow's Asgard on everybody. However, I'm gonna give this spot to Oars. Not only does this Gigant Bazooka come after a battle with the entire Straw Hat crew, but we also get an X-Ray of Oars' spine as it happens. It's pretty rad.

16. Kuro

I can't imagine that, even after evaluating every possible outcome or option, that "Man of a Thousand Plans" Captain Kuro would've thought that he'd be defeated by a goofy rubber head screaming in his face and then caving his skull in. It's not the most humiliating way to go out, but considering Kuro spent years trying to enact the perfect scheme and talking trash about being a pirate, it's on up there.

15. Foxy

I'm a Foxy stan, a Long Ring Long Land Big Fan, and a Davy Back apologist. I LOVE this arc, and I love Foxy. But that doesn't mean that I didn't rejoice when Luffy finally got the win here. However, I have to give most of the credit to Bin Shimada, who is the best at voicing truly obnoxious One Piece villains (He also voice Wapol.) Heck, he's one of the best at voicing villains in general, as his versatility has also led him to being behind the roar behind Dragon Ball's Broly.

14. Usopp

Oh, I picked a sad one. The battle between Luffy and Usopp is the most depressing in One Piece's history, with Usopp pouring everything he has into a fight where defeat is almost 100% inevitable, and Luffy being forced to beat up the crew member that he often relates to the most. As a fight, it's equal parts thrilling and depressing, and as the start of the perfect Water 7/Enies Lobby arcs, it's....also equal parts thrilling and depressing.

13. Buggy

This is the battle that would set the standard for inventive conclusions to One Piece fights and even though it's less dramatic than some of the finishing blows to come, it deserves a spot on this list due to how iconic it feels now. It's a final fight that teaches you that One Piece just might be somethng special when it comes to handing defeat to its villains.

12. Cracker

I like this fight because it establishes two things: 1) It makes Luffy a genuine threat to the stability and heirarchy of Whole Cake Island (even if he's not ready to take on Big Mom directly yet), and 2) It shows us that the Sanji Retrieval Team can get the job done. Also, I like pairing this fight with the last one with Buggy, because in both cases, it's Luffy getting a crucial assist from Nami and they make a great team.

11. Lucci

Luffy's fight against Rob Lucci is one of the most well-constructed fights in anime, a contest that flip flops between a battle of nearly equal strengths, a desperate underdog journey, and an immensely satisfying and almost terrifying conclusion. Luffy closing his eyes and screaming while pummeling Lucci through the wall is such a visceral, violent way to end this fight and shows that while clever inventiveness can be handy in a battle on the Grand Line, sometimes you just need sheer will.

10. Sea King

Not only is this a "Yeah! One Piece is the best!" punch, but it's also an integral part of the "We Are" opening. If I was a DJ, I'd play that song at every club I worked at. People would be like "DJ MERRY, PLAY THE LATEST POST MALONE!" and I'd be like "Right on it!" and then I'd just play "We Are" again.

9. Wapol

As I mentioned, Wapol is one of the most obnoxious anime villains out there. So if he didn't get something that would deserve a spot on this list, I would've rioted, or at least been very disappointed on Twitter. Luckily, Wapol, pleading with Luffy, gets rocketed into the Drum Island stratosphere. It's literally the nicest option for him.

8. Doflamingo

Doflamingo's defeat is a long time coming. Shown as a particularly malicious guy back during the Skypiea arc, then shown to be an agent of the underworld with a hand in weapons and trafficking, then revealed to be the false king of Dressrosa, he's needed a punch to the everywhere for almost 15 years of One Piece's run. And Luffy gives it to him, knocking him down through the streets of the city that he terrorized for so long.

7. Blueno

Power-ups are fairly expected in shows like One Piece. But that's not a diss on them at all. I LOVE when a protagonist gets notably stronger and can pull off cool new moves and maybe gets a new haircut. But Luffy going Second Gear and then absolutely making a mockery of Blueno is something to behold. Blueno's look of stunned disbelief makes it even better, and it's just a warm-up for the war against the rest of CP9 to come.

6. Crocodile

For most of the Alabasta arc, Luffy is 0-2 in battles against Crocodile. But, while Dvorak's New World Symphony: 4th Movement plays, Luffy uses the blood that he's shed to counter Crocodile's sand to knock him up through Alubarna. It's rare to hear someone call "rubber bro uses his magical fists to shatter the internal organs of an evil desert-themed gentleman" a truly majestic scene, but this is beautiful work. If there was a Church of Eiichiro Oda, this would be painted on the ceiling. Get lost, Michelangelo.

5. Arlong

The trend of "Luffy beats the main villain of the arc by knocking him through something large" that we've seen with foes like Crocodile, Enel, Lucci, and Doflamingo was established here with Arlong. Horrified at the way that he's treated Nami, Luffy uses a Gum Gum Battle-Axe to turn Arlong's vertebrate into chowder.

4. Enel

Luffy using the body of a psychopathic tyrant to ring the Shandorian Bell, thus proving to Mont Blanc Noland's descendent that the City of Gold did exist and freeing the citizens of Skypiea from Enel's reign is both poetic and just a cool looking set piece. It's a reminder of just how fulfilling reading/watching One Piece is, and how the details of the story often culminate in these big, lovely bouquets of fisticuffs and never lose any of their meaning or importance along the way.

3. Katakuri

No, this isn't a typical knockout, as Luffy falls down first and Katakuri dropping feels like more of a spiritual defeat than a physical one. But with the knockout of Katakuri comes the changing of an ideology, and the allowance of failure, something that Katakuri had never given himself before. So it not only signals the end of the fantastic main duel of the arc, but legitimate character growth for the antagonist. Also, it comes after the Fourth Gear Snake Man fight, which is one of the best animated episodes in the entire show.

2. Charlos

The most gif'd moment of One Piece ever, Luffy punching Charlos so hard that it seems to break the anime needs no explanation. It's perfect.

How broken do you have to be before you’re shattered?

Keefe Sencen has been taken. Snatched from what was meant to be a prank, he struggles to find his way home. The question is, where is home?

Tam Song is cracking. He’s the cause of this, or so he believes. He’s convinced he’s the reason Keefe is suffering, and it’s awakening feelings he’s so desperately shut in the depths of his mind.

Sophie Foster is panicking. One of her best friends is missing and his blood has been splattered. She wonders, what would happen if there is no blood left by the time she finds him?

Time is ticking. Hour by hour, there’s a chance Keefe will never come back, and the gang is scrambling to crack the clues and ominous hints left by the mysterious thieves.

Chapter 3 beneath the cut.

Chapter 3: The Storm

Sophie had never felt more panicked. She shared a fearful look with Linh before asking, “Fitz, what’s wrong with Biana?”

The handsome face on the imparter’s screen twisted with terror, “I don’t know! She just stopped responding and began to cry when she read it!”

Fitz had called a few moments ago, talking about Biana receiving a letter that left her in shock.

“Have you read it yet?” Linh questioned worriedly.

“No. I can’t get it out of her hands.”

“We’re coming over,” Sophie said, sitting up so fast her head started spinning. She grabbed Linh’s hand and barely noticed how the hydrokinetic’s face flushed adorably with red. “C’mon!” Sophie called, pulling her toward the cliff. Linh flailed for a moment, startled, but got her footing and the two girls ran and jumped.

The fall was always terrifying, even after literal years of doing this. A crack split the air, and the duo fell in a heap. They scrambled up—blushing, obviously—dusting themselves off. A sudden noise caught their

Loud, shrill

Without uttering a word, the elves took off and shoved open the doors, running into the room.

“What’s going on?!” Sophie asked as Fitz came running down the stairs.

“I already told you!”

“Well where is she?” Linh said, glancing around the room.

“In the kitchen,” Fitz said as he darted away with Sophie and Linh on his heels.

They entered the kitchen area, where Biana kneeled on the floor, her shoulders shaking. She kept vanishing, her abilities reacting to her emotions.

“Biana? What’s wrong?” Sophie asked.

She looked up, tear stains racing down her face.

They stood quietly, waiting.

Biana stood, wiping her face roughly with her sleeve. Sophie had never seen her do such an inelegant thing.

She looked at it briefly, only spying messy handwriting. Her main concern was Biana, whose eyes were red and puffy.

“It’s okay.” Linh murmured, pulling the girl into a

Biana smiled sadly, but sniffed as she glanced back down at the note, “Read it. She said the words so softly, Sophie had to strain to hear them, but she obliged.

The boy of sadness has wandered away. To a place that only him and I could find. I’ve sent him there on a fake quest,

to a place where he can make no calls of distress. If you want him back, give me what I desire. Respond quickly or he shall be gone forever. Fear not, for my request is simply human currency.

The boy of sadness…

Realization struck Sophie harder than a bullet train. Her heart thudded against her chest as thousands of vivid scenarios raced through her brain.

“Keefe?” Linh gasped before Sophie could open her mouth.

Biana averted her eyes, another tear rolling down her cheek, “I-it has to be.”

“Who sent him on a fake quest?!” Fitz asked, the disbelief strong in his tone.

“Fitz, stop asking stupid questions and start asking why they want human money!” Biana shouted, her mood suddenly turning angry.

Nobody knew how to react.

Sophie curved her mouth to form words at the spark of realization. “Wait… there are lots of different types of human money! They don’t all use the same currency…”

And then it dawned on her. “Is this a prank?”

Linh’s eyes widened.

Fitz wheeled on her. “A prank? Sophie, no! Keefe is missing!”

“But it’s a fake quest. And whoever wrote this probably doesn’t know much about humans because they didn’t specify what kind of money they want.” Everyone was looking at her now, which made Sophie reach up and tug and eyelash out.

“It’s just… a maybe,” she mumbled, looking down.

Fitz took back the note. “Let’s call someone from the Black Swan, run for Keefe’s pendent. For all we know Keefe could be messing with us,”

Biana looked at her brother in horror. “Fitz! He could be kidnapped and you think this is a joke?!”

Fitz turned to look his sister in the eyes. “Biana, it’s Keefe. What would anyone want with him?”

Biana’s eyes blazed, “Fitz,” she said lowly.

“Not like that! I mean, who would take him? We took out the Neverseen ages ago. We demolished the rebellion. There is no more enemies, and there hasn’t been for well over two years.”

Sophie’s stomach rolled. She remembered the horror of being with Brant and the others. She remembered it quite clearly.

“We should take this seriously until we’ve confirmed it’s a joke.” Dex said, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. “Sorry, Linh called. I uh... she thought I should come.” He fiddled with a gadget on his wrist. Sophie looked at Linh questioningly.

“Fine. I’ll call Magnate Leto and tell him that we need to track Keefe,” Fitz said, snapping her back to attention.

“No need! That’s kind of why Linh called. I uh, developed a way to track our pendants? I know, random, but I just… I started the project after we first got kidnapped and I found it recently and thought it’d be funny to use it to mess with you guys. But now I should probably use it to track our missing friend,” Dex said quickly.

“Do it!” Biana jumped in, “Find him, please,”

Sophie found herself smiling, and when she glanced over, she saw Linh smiling as well.

It was obvious that Biana cared for Keefe, and Sophie had to admit she was a little jealous.

But that wasn’t important at the moment.

“Hey, where's your parents?” Dex asked as he pulled a small device from his pocket.

“Away on business,” Fitz answered automatically, watching him switch on the tech.

Dex placed his thumb on the black panel. “Keefe Sencen,” he whispered. The device pinged for a moment, before zooming in on a globe, then to a country, and then to a giant forest.

Located, Heller Kern forest, 48-18-8-9.

“Why is he in Claralux?” Fitz said, looking at the map.

“What?” Sophie glanced at him, confused.

“It’s the proper name of the forest,” Dex explained, “Claralux is a forest with bioluminescence in the core of it. The trees also sing a powerful, ancient song that even we can hear. It allows us to hear the voice of the one we truly desire, but it can be a lot of things based on the book,”

“Oh.” Sophie said. “How do we get there?”

“With this!” Linh said, fumbling to hold up a crystal, “I’ve kept it since we lived there. It’s true, though you can ask the trees to stop if they trust you,”

The crystal was a pale green, one that Sophie had never seen before. “How did you get that?”

Linh blushed. “I made it,”

Wow. That… Sophie didn’t know what to say to that.

Dex eyed it, the amazement clear in his periwinkle eyes. But thankfully, Biana saved her from having to respond.

“C’mon!” She cried, racing over to Linh.

The small smile that cracked across the hydrokinetic’s face caused a series of emotions to spring through Sophie’s heart, but she shoved them away.

Linh held the crystal up to the light, motioning to follow, “Let’s go!”

The forest was unlike anything that Sophie expected. In all honesty, she didn’t know what’d she was expecting.

But a strangely warm, glowing forest was not it.

The trees were tall and welcoming, and even though they loomed over Sophie and her friends, she didn’t feel threatened. They went on for miles, never seeming to end.

“Woah…” Fitz said, gazing at the forest with his mouth hanging open.

Dex and Biana stared at it with the same awe, but Linh was hurriedly shoving the crystal back into her pocket, then glanced at them, “You all ready?” They snapped out of their trance and nodded.

Linh turned to look at the forest as well, and she heaved a deep sigh, “Okay… Follow me.”

She took one step towards the woods, which encouraged Sophie to do the same.

Their walk went slowly at first, as they all were distracted by the pure, natural beauty of the place. They quickened their pace, with Linh and Dex in the lead.

Sophie admired the forest from behind them, but ahead of her she watched as the two elves shivered as they set foot into the woods.

“What is it?” Biana asked worriedly.

Linh turned to look at them, her pale blue eyes glazed over.

Worry sprang through Sophie, seeping through her bones. “Linh?” she whispered.

“It’s… just the trees. They’re louder this time. Urgent. Can’t you hear it?”

Her voice was soft, distant, even. How she sounded when Sophie enhanced her for the first time.

Sophie shook her head. “I don’t hear anything.”

“Then listen.”

Sophie was confused. How does she listen to something she couldn’t hear?

But she closed her eyes anyway, and focused on the forest.

“Help him,”

Sophie looked at Linh. “Did you say something?”

Linh shook her head, focused on something else.

How could Linh have said something, but not actually say it?

“Help him,” it repeated.

Sophie looked up. It wasn’t Linh. Was this the forest? Was this was she was talking about?

“How?” Sophie whispered, earning some bewildered looks.

“Sophie?” Fitz said, stepping forward.

And suddenly, light shimmered into the air, and it then elongated into a long line, stretching and winding into the forest, to places they couldn’t see. They all gasped, staring at the glow. But then they took deep breaths, and listened to their hearts.

And so they followed the light.

It was easy to say that Sophie wasn’t scared. But she was. The deeper she got, she swore the shadows grew longer and seemed to move unnaturally.

Something about the way they moved felt so… familiar.

Step by step they walked through the forest. Fitz stayed near the back, while Dex and Linh led them. Biana stayed close to Sophie.

The trees suddenly ended, the thick trucks seeming to curve around a single clearing, an area that bright light emanated from.

It took her breath away.

Linh started forward, walking in powerful, confident strides, before a shadow appeared and disappeared, forming the familiar face of Tam. He was grinning maniacally.

“Ha! Got you!” Linh stepped back in surprise, while the others jumped at the sudden noise.

“What?” Biana said, confused.

Tam looked at them apologetically. “Sorry, I had to make it believable. I made Keefe come out here in search of Sophie, but I haven’t seen him yet... I was gonna fake kidnap him, but I guess that’s failed.”

Dex paled. “The tracker says he’s within one hundred feet of us,”

“Not possible, I’ve covered every inch of this forest looking for him.” Tam said. “But to be sure…” He spread his arms out, and shadows went racing over and around all of them, and Sophie shuddered.

It was hard to remember exactly how powerful the Shade had gotten in the last few years.

“He’s not here,” Tam said.

“That.. no. This device is tracking his registry pendent.” Dex said, holding up the device.

“Maybe it’s wrong?” Fitz suggested.

“It’s getting the feed from the Council. I see what they see. So if it’s wrong, then it’s not my tools.” Sophie looked sideways at him, remembering how The Black Swan would mess up their registry pendants every so often so they could slip to a place unknown or prohibited. Maybe Dex forgot that?

“Guys?” Linh said, suddenly standing a few feet away from them, holding up a piece of paper in one hand and an empty, uncapped bottle in another.

She read it, and handed it to Fitz.

Sophie’s heart dropped as she saw the look on his face.

Horror. Fitz slowly handed the note to Dex, with the others watching carefully.

They looked at Dex, watching his skin pale and his hands fidget as he processed the words.

And then Sophie took her turn. The words were harsh, like it was written by one very, very, very angry person.

Revenge is best served on a silver platter.

The shiny pendent fell with a clatter.

In order for you to pay for your misbehavior,

He will have to SHATTER.

Her hands shook as it dawned on her what was happening.

Biana took the note from Sophie’s gloved hands, falling to her knees at the possible loss of her… friend.

“Guys?” Fitz said, his voice coming out choked. “You need to see this,”

Sophie’s eyes followed the disruption in the grass, a pathway made by a sled or something large.

Or someone being dragged through it.

And then she saw what he was looking at. She froze as her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Keefe’s silver registry pendent.

Covered in blood.

New Year’s Wrap Up!

Fics this year:

Elementary (Allura & Lance & Keith) (3,734 words)

A poison in the building they're captured in leaves Keith delirious and vulnerable, with only Allura there to take care of him. Unused to comforting others, Allura is completely out of her element. Luckily, she has Lance on the other end of the line to walk her through it.

Perennial (Shiro/Keith) (23,371 words)

Keith and Shiro find each other in every life. (A series of connected AUs) 1. Shiro will do whatever it takes to promote peace between his nation and Keith's. Even if that means staying quiet about the way the prince makes his heart ignite with the power of a thousand suns. 2. Shiro doesn’t have a soulmate anymore, but he finds the next best thing in a boy in his astrobiology course. 3. Selkies are never safe, not when Hunters are near. Keith breaks Shiro out of the laboratory facility he was taken to, but Keith is captured in the process. Shiro needs to go back for Keith, but he can’t when his ability to take his human form has been stolen away. 4. Keith takes care of Shiro after he escapes from a Fire Nation prison, his arm irreparably burned. Hoping to take down the Fire Lord, they search for a new way for Shiro to bend the elements, confronting Shiro's fear of fire along the way. 5. A Galra rebel breaks Shiro out of prison, asking for his help in shutting down a weapon that threatens the lives of the entire planet Princess Allura rests on. Shiro's Altean heritage will allow him to destroy the crystal that powers it, but not without a cost.

Pulmonary (Shiro/Keith/Allura) (7,425 words)

Infected with a disease that feeds off of heartache, flowers bloom in Shiro’s lungs, choking him with petals. He keeps the petals he coughs up a secret, but it’s getting hard to hide. The only thing that can stop its trajectory is if the person he’s in love with returns his feelings.

Shiro doesn’t even know who it is he’s sick for—Keith is Shiro’s anchor, his sun; but Allura is his compass and stars. Either way, it doesn’t matter. Neither of them could ever be his. They’ve each made their feelings for him—or lack thereof—known.

Not to mention the fate of the known universe is contingent on their upcoming marriage.

The coughing attacks get worse, but he can’t let them find out why. All he can do is try to push down his longing and watch as, little by little, Keith and Allura fall in love.

Dissonance (Shiro & Keith & Hunk & Pidge & Lance & Allura) (4,557 words)

Shiro can’t remember anything from before he was kidnapped by the Galra Empire seven years ago, but his life since then has been stable. Everything goes the way it’s supposed to, in accordance with the prophecy foretold by the Score; it’s so routine, it’s almost boring.

That all changes when, hell-bent on a mission, a stranger named Keith breaks into his home, and an unexpected reaction between their quintessences transports them halfway across the world. Shiro finds himself deep in the heart of enemy territory with nothing but a bad headache, his weaponized prosthesis, and a churlish yet protective soldier for company.

Keith vows to get him home safe and sound, but returning Shiro to his old life is easier said than done. They're going to need some help along the way.

Yes, but for once, Lance's words have left him. What’s he supposed to say? Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I feel like something might be wrong with Shiro, but I can’t even figure out what the problem is—if there’s even a problem to begin with. Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I’m not you, and Shiro won’t talk to me again, no matter how hard I try. Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I miss you, and I don’t want to deal with this alone.

Nope, not happening. "I—I can call back later.”

No Matter (Keith &/Shiro, Keith & Lance) (7,104 words)

“You shouldn’t have to put up with this.”

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not.” Shiro draws in a stuttering breath. “I’ve hurt you, over and over. And I don’t—I don’t know how to stop.”

Keith returns to the Castle to help figure out what’s wrong with Shiro. He’s here for him unconditionally, even when it hurts. He’ll get the information they need to find a solution; knowledge or death.

No Rest for the Blessed (2,307 words)

A series of ficlets based on whump prompts.

He was close, so close. “Everything okay?” Shiro asked, quietly.“Of course,” Keith said. "Everything is fine.”It was a bald-faced lie; everything was not fine. It was wonderful and devastating and nowhere in between.

In which, in order to form an alliance, Keith and Shiro need to fake a relationship and endure a series of related trials.

It’s not anything special, but it sets the story up the way I want it to.

Best: I’d say either Linger or Sensibility.

Linger:

With a soft sigh, Shiro lets his heavy eyelids fall closed. He’s calmed by the sound of fingers tapping against keys, interrupted occasionally by a gentle touch. A press to his wrist, a stroke of his cheek, a brush of fingers through his hair. He falls asleep to sweet, subtle reminders that he’s not alone, not anymore.

Sensibility:

Shiro’s never been one to back down from a challenge, and it’s not like it’s a secret any longer. So he says, with every intention of being heard, “I love you too,” and the way Keith’s little smirk fades into something soft and genuine is completely, utterly worth it.

Worst: The Only Thing Sweeter.

Yes, she could get used to this. Breakfast in bed with her two favourite people? It’s not Altea, it’s not the Castle, but it’s exactly where she wants to be.

This one was for a flashbang, and I was at my word limit. I think the ending could have been better.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

More for sure! I’m a very slow writer, so I’m impressed by my word count. :)

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year? I wrote a domestic fluff piece! Surprised myself with that one. I don’t think I’d have expected to write Allurance a year ago either, since I only got onboard with that one around season 5-ish.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Hmmm. Maybe Pulmonary. It’s so self indulgent. Shiro-centric, check. Hanahaki, check. Sheith, check. Shallura, check. Kallura, check. Political marriage, check. Angst with a happy ending, check. Pining Shiro, check, check, and check.

Make Believe is most popular in terms of comments/kudos on AO3, though Sensibility got more notes on tumblr.

Make Believe: Fake dating is such a fun trope, and I love writing from Keith’s point of view. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, and there’s SO much pining. I always love getting comments on that one--everyone’s so frustrated with them. >:)

Sensibility: This one was a bit of a surprise! My writing is usually pretty dialogue-heavy, so having only one character speaking was an interesting challenge--especially so with Shiro, whose emotions are so repressed. I’m glad people liked how it turned out! Story most underappreciated by the universe? Dissonance, by a large margin. It’s sort of a niche AU, so, fair enough. It's a lot of work to write, since I’m a bit obsessive about details, so it’s on hiatus for now. Story that could have been better? I like how Linger turned out, but there are a few things I would probably go back and change. There are parts of Silence, too, that I think could have been done better. Sexiest story?

Haha, my stories are all very wholesome. They’re mostly just cuddling and pining. The closest I ever got to sexy was two years ago with A Game of Cat and Space Mouse, and even that was pretty chaste. Saddest story? I cried writing the scene in No Matter where Shiro attacks Keith. I was sure that would never happen in canon since that would be too emotional... I am delighted to have been wrong.

I wrote a couple sad drabbles, too, with Easier (Lance processing the clone situation) and the Kerberos Success AU (Keith helping Shiro live with his illness post-Kerberos). They earned me some lovely tags, such as “who the fuck needs a heart”, “*sobbing*”, “how dare you”, “fuck you??”, “are you trying to murder me”, and “CALM DOWN SATAN!” Job well done, I guess. :)

Most fun? Make Believe! Fake dating is always fun. Story with single sweetest moment? The entirety of The Only Thing Sweeter is sappy enough to give you a toothache, but single moment? Maybe the end of Linger, where Shiro doesn’t want to be left alone, so Keith lets him sleep in the common room with his head in his lap.

Three words come back to him like a beacon, cutting through the swathes of dark memories under Haggar’s influence. “What you said to me,” Shiro says, “When we… when I almost… when you got that scar. You— you really meant it, didn’t you.”

Keith pulls back so Shiro can see his smile, honest and kind. “You know I always mean what I say.”

“Yeah,” Shiro whispers. “You do.”

“I meant what I said about you needing sleep, too,” Keith says. He rubs the tear tracks from Shiro’s face with his thumb, then guides him to lie down, bringing Shiro’s head to rest in his lap. “Get some rest, alright?”

Hardest story to write?

Oh maaan, there were a few. The last AU in Perennial (Sacrifice) was definitely a challenge, the latest chapter of Silence just hated me, and the zine piece I recently wrote for @vldwhumpzine fought me tooth and nail.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

Elementary for sure! Allura & Lance’s banter was just so fun and natural. It basically wrote itself.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

I don’t know about shift, but Collect Call, Elementary, and Silence all really reinforced how much I love supportive Lance.

Most overdue story?

I need to finish up Silence. There are also some prompts sitting in my inbox that I haven’t gotten around to.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I tried something different with the pacing for Linger. I was reading one of @lightshesaid‘s fics and was in awe of her descriptive imagery, so I tried to slow down a bit and pay more attention to details. I’m not sure if it worked, but I tried!

I also wrote a couple stories without Shiro in them, and that was just crazy.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

Finish Silence and Make Believe! Those are the big ones. I’ve also got some unpublished WIPs I’d like to get around to, like a piece set in the Kerberos Success AU, maybe a follow up to Pulmonary, and maaaybe that angsty post-s6 fic where Shiro comes out of the astral plane forgetting how to interact with the world and the people around him. Peer pressure is a great motivator. :)

9. Favorite way to procastinate from writing (Besides Tumblr)?

My Favorite? Probably laying on my bed and staring at the ceiling while I wonder if I’m gonna take a nap. I like it because a) it’s mind decluttering time, and b) maybe I get bored and try to write. I don’t do it TOO often though.

10. Favorite way to get inspired for writing?

Just think about what’ll be interesting about the next scene I write. Or focus on what scene I want to get to. Otherwise, not sure really.

11. Favorite Live action movie?

Knight and Day. Whatever its issues - it’s my default ‘favorite,’ even if I’ve seen a better movie. It’s got tons of action and humour and I LOVE that. AND I’ve rewatched it several times - rewatch value is always a big one. It’s a tad lackluster, story-wise, but it still entertains every time.

12. Favorite Non-Disney cartoon

There are way too many good ones, so I’m going to have to default to all the animated Justice League cartoons. Mainly because their batman is my FAVORITE batman, despite even them not blending the Bruce IS Batman idea together. I think Gotham got the closest to that, but I haven’t watched more than a season of it I think.

13. Favorite Disney cartoon

So hard to say! Cars 3 was particularly satisfying because I knew the movie was going to be fantastic the moment the trailer took my breath away. On the other hand, there’s also the fantastic DuckTales reboot - but then there’s always the Milo Murphy show that tied in with Phineas and Ferb during its finale and -

14. Favorite Book character

I really liked Artemis Fowl. Him being a protagonist good guy as a villian slowly reforming himself without knowing was SUCH an amazing characterization. There was always something missing from it though. I could never quite pinpoint what, but it got SO close that it was still the most brilliant and fantastic thing I’d read up to that point.

15. Favorite Fanfiction

Very difficult. “Flowey Isn’t a Good Life Coach” had me hooked for two days until I finished it (leaving me empty, disorientated, and lost). But there was also tons of Gravity Falls fanfic that I adored (I made a rec list on my mainblog a while back too actually). And I think there was another fandom that I just had to look at ... but I don’t remember it right now.

16. First Original Story

I have these spiral notebooks with words in them from when I was 12. Half ready and rumbling to write, half seventh grade writing project - I think my MC was named Jane? No more than 20,000 words at most.

- Girl goes to different world where danger threatens to destroy it. She is 'chosen one' in a line of 'chosen ones' and her best friend is actually from there. He's basically been her guardian all the while, and he's sort of half lizard mutant.

- Along the way they meet a useless mad old man. An angsty but suave, but irritable dude named shadow. And a more sensible local guy who leaves his 'tribe' to help save his world.

I just ... I love how - to use a euphamism - how 'classic' it is.

But you know what, there are some good parts. Just starting out, tropes, cliches, and plenty of mistakes sure. But it’s also telling of my style even just beginning. For instance, the main MC and her friend that’s a Guy have these moments that are really close and build their relationship - but it’s not romantic. Everyone’s ‘friends,’ and it’s really telling of where my priorities aren’t, ha.

10. Doctor - Doctor Who

No matter what incarnation (I’m still haven’t watched classics all whoops) Doctor is always amazing. I can’t choose which regeneration was the best, cause they all are some part of him, his journey and growth (and downs). Love how flawed he is and yet so good-hearted. Can’t wait for 13th!

9. All Might/Toshinori Yagi - Boku no Hero Academia

How could I not love dad-Might? But honestly, he decided to single-hended became a symbol of hope for those who can't fight. His image of “mighty hero” looking like from old American hero-comics is a good contrast for how damaged he is due this whole “hero work”.

8. Olivier Armstrong - Fullmetal Alchemist (actually like every god damned character in this series??? especially women)

As woman in men's world, how could I not love this badass military queen? She’s strong not only psychically but mentally. As one of best general in Amestris army she takes command on the strongest men in the army in lil mother-like but strong-handed way.

7. Sera Masumi - Detective Conan

Tomboyish high-school girl who don’t get girls stuff, likes martial arts, is interested in detectives work, would probably wreck the world for her brothers? It looks like my autobiography??? She’s a strong intelligent gurl who can fight for what she believes. Not only by beating people.

6. Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy - The Witcher

I really had hard time to choose one from this series, but I was in love in Regis since primary school when I have read books and games didn’t exist. Former bloodholik, from years trying to restrain from drinking. A loner, but great Geralt’s friend who helped him and his “happy” company to find Ciri. Books left me devastated, but Blood and Wine helped me to recover.

5. Jim Lake Jr - Trollhunters

How to make a great and relatable character in kids cartoon about saving the world? Put in one jar tons of anxiety, stress, love for parent, some of responsibility and goofiness, clumsiness and lil of hardcore badassness and good character development. Plus magic-shoujo transformation. Voila! Here’s Jim.

4. Balalayka - Black Lagoon

Badass woman as head of ruthless Russian mafia who looks like she might murder you. And she would without a single thought. It speaks for itself.

3. Lelouch Lamperouge - Code Geass (I had to google his name lol)

More hardcore Light Yagami but less annoying and in mecha anime with way better ending. Usually cold headed, when you think he already forgot about what morality is, he shows that even if he acts like the total asshole he isn’t one to the core and still care for people. Just don’t show it. But he’s ready to let die thousands to achieve his goal. He’s fucked up.

2. Mephisto Pheles - Ao no Exorcist

Man, I really like characters with doubtful morality. No matter what this series is I really love this annoying bastard. Even when he’s the main gamer in this series we still don’t know exactly what his real aim is, and honestly, I don’t care. Lovable mix of goofiness, otaku and bastard.

1. Shiroe - Log Horizon

Kirito, but 100 times better and more badass. I the beginning of series lil lost and anxious, but never stupid or naive. When he begins to get used to situation he’s in, he starts to be lil asshole who prefer to play bad cop for the sake of result which is always to help others than himself. Plus if you ever enjoyed playing any support character in multiplayer games you’ll be in love like me.

That’s for now. I probably forgot half of them (like Jigen, Hoozuki or Ginko), but I can’t remember every single series or film I watched. Plus there’s no more space for them all :V

Paige Talks Process Behind Her ‘Always Growing’ EP [Q&A]

Since Paige was 9, she’s been a singer. Larger than life Disney Channel characters like Lizzie McGuire were her inspiration to share covers on her YouTube channel ‘Paige’s Space’, where she gained thousands of viewers (including Billie Eilish, who shared one to her Instagram story), before switching to original song writing as she approached adulthood.

Writing songs is now a way of life for the 22-year-old. She’s signed to Sony and just released her second EP Always Growing. Her debut major label single, ‘Bloom’, was released in late 2019 and led to a busy run of shows, sometimes playing to tens of thousands of people as she supported New Zealand mega-acts Drax Project and Six60. Here she shares the background to her start in music and how she grew into song writing while staying true to herself.

Ones to Watch: You started singing at a really young age, who or what made you want to start so young?

Paige: I used to watch a lot of Disney Channel as a kid. In the Lizzie McGuire movie, she sings this song at the end called ‘What Dreams Are Made Of’ and, when I was about 7, I performed it in front of my school. I guess that's kind of what started it all. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of music, and I wanted it to become a reality for me.

You picked up the guitar at a young age, was that a Lizzie McGuire influence too?

My grandad passed away when I was a baby and left my Dad a guitar, but nobody ever touched it. One day when I was about 9, I pulled it out and asked if I could start playing. The next day, I took a ‘sick day’ off school to teach myself. I became obsessed. I mainly taught myself through YouTube, then I did lessons for about a year after I got the hang of the basics.

And how did song writing come into your life?

I think I was just fascinated with songs and I really wanted to have my own. When I was 9, that’s when I started playing guitar, so it was all coming together. Then I realised the stuff I really liked to sing about, and at 12 I started writing! Disney Channel definitely influences the music I like, the pop blended with heavy emotions, really corny songs.

The Billie Eilish re-share on Instagram in 2016 was a huge deal, do you remember where you were when that happened?

I was at university, studying music at the time. I was waiting in line for class and I kept seeing Billie liking a lot of my photos. Then my phone started vibrating heaps and I saw she re-shared one of the songs I wrote. You never think stuff like that really happens, and I was thinking ‘Why did she do that? It’s not that great of a song!’. It was so bizarre.

After that, did you feel a certain type of pressure to put something amazing out?

I felt highly pressured. I’d been waiting for attention from the music industry - at the time I was writing songs and putting them online but didn’t know how to start, so I just thought ‘hopefully someone will see me’, then Billie re-shared it.

Now all these people were seeing me, and I didn’t know what to do. It was stressful; I didn’t get a lot of sleep that week. I actually got myself a manager that day, I was trying to be organized. I feel less pressure now because it’s been a while but at the time it was stressful.

Your second EP Always Growing is out now, can you tell us about the recording process that went into it?

I recorded it with [songwriter] Josh Fountain, I brought him the song ‘Waves’ which I wrote nearly 3 years ago. It was so hard to finish, and he figured out how the production worked. We also wrote ‘Hit and Run’ and ‘Bloom’, actually every song but two we wrote together. We also wrote ‘Yellow’ which was interesting. That's a very vulnerable song and we wrote it after meeting for just the second time.

It actually wasn’t hard to make the songs - it was a fun process to create a body of work I’m really proud of. The EP is about my growth through mistakes I’ve made and moments I’m not the proudest of, every song speaks to me trying to grow through them. I also wanted to speak about things that matter to me like mental health, gay rights and owning your mistakes.

Given you started song-writing by yourself at such a young age, once you started to write with other people, what was the adaptation like?

I started writing with others once I got to university, I was very protective of my ideas and didn’t want anyone else to have a say in my songs, I found it insulting. I was not good to work with for a while! Then I started writing more and getting used to it. I had a big ego, and I’ve realized that I’m not always right about everything! That’s what writing with other people taught me. Luckily when I got put into rooms with writers like Josh, Djeisan [Suskov] and MAALA, I was ready to write.

Over the course of your career, you can see in your music and who you are online that you’ve stayed true to yourself. Did that become harder throughout your career?

I don’t think it’s hard for me to stay true to who I am, that’s something I’m proud of. I’ve always been happy about being quite honest and real, not moulded into something people want me to be. I also have a really big family who keep my feet on the ground. At times it was hard to check in with myself though, particularly after the whole Billie Eilish thing. That was a very drastic thing in my life, I think because I’ve always liked my grounding.

Does that reflect in the artists you listen to?

Actually, no. Although I really admire Julia Michaels and the way she portrays her vulnerability and speaks her truth, I also like the bold and outrageous. Lady Gaga is my favorite! Miley Cyrus too. They’re down to earth in their own way.

Yeah, I feel like Lady Gaga is just an exaggeration of who she is.

Which I love! I think the music I listen to is quite honest, I tend to be drawn to people personality wise. They don’t mask anything. Maybe that’s why I find it quite easy to be that way.

Over summer you had a few big shows with Drax Project and Six60, how was playing in front of tens of thousands of people?

I loved it! It was my first experience playing festivals, I had never even been to one before! At times though it was a bit discouraging only because you’re the opening act and it can be kind of hard. You’re aiming so high for things, but people aren’t really listening to you sometimes. I learnt a lot from it.

Do you have any tricks to calm the nerves before shows?

I don’t really get nervous; I get really excited! Me and my band members play tag, we stretch. I just have so much energy inside of me! Every summer I’ve either been working at Krispy Kreme or with my mum at the golf course, then this summer everything happened all at once!

Your live set-up has changed, you used to perform with your guitar, right?

I used to perform with my guitar a lot. I had a job singing at a bar where I sang every week. But I always did it with a guitar, never a band. When you play with a guitar you get used to the way you move, and without one I never knew what to do with my hands. Now I don’t ever want to perform with a guitar again, I love to jump around! I love performing, it’s probably the main reason I love making music - watching those Katy Perry and Justin Bieber documentaries, that’s the goal for my career to have some really outrageous production. If I don’t fly in a concert, it’s career over!

Final question, who are your Ones to Watch?

I’m plugging Wells* intensely, he inspires me a lot. He’s doing unique stuff, and people don’t give him the time. I’m a big rap fan too, I’d love to work with Vayne, MELODOWNZ, Wax Mustang. I love Technicolour and Laiika too.

Combo Breaker 2018: A Retrospect

Original Date: 06/02/18 Author’s Note: This was done a full week after Combo Breaker because I caught the illest post-con/post-tournament sickness and it was terrible. So worth it, but terrible. In any case, I had so much fun at Combo Breaker and even more fun recalling everything that happened. Not much to really say, I’ll let the article do the talking. This is a VERY long read. Over 2500 words to be exact.

The Combo Breaker weekend passed just as quickly as it had arrived, like a tornado hitting the Windy City. Rather, the outskirts of the Windy City, in a small suburb known as St. Charles. Regardless where it had taken place, Combo Breaker was, without a doubt, the best tournament I have ever attended. Before I go into my thoughts and retrospect, as well as my teammates thoughts, I want to give a huge shout-out to Rick for hosting such an event. I’d also like to give a shout out to the bracket runners, game leads, vendors, artists, and anyone else in charge of making sure the event ran as smoothly as possible.

That Friday morning, I woke up at 1, filled with energy uncommon for one who awakens at 1 in the morning. I would have several more hours to go until I’d leave my apartment to catch my flight at LaGuardia so I could have caught up on more sleep if I wanted to. Adrenaline said otherwise. Combo Breaker would have been my first major in which I went out of state for. As I’ve said in a previous article, my first ever major was Defend the North, but it was literally an hour away from me as far as commute goes. I didn’t stay at a hotel, I simply went back and forth from my apartment to the Crowne Plaza over there. This was a much bigger deal for me, however, as I would meet so many people I would never have had the chance to. As this would be my first Combo Breaker, I didn’t know what to expect, yet the stories I’ve heard about Combo Breaker made me excited to experience such a thing within a few hours.

Unfortunately, everything came to a halt when I arrived at O’Hare. See, I planned my original flight to arrive at 10:30 so I could catch the shuttle bus to Combo Breaker. What happened instead, was I arrived at 9:30 because I didn’t consider Central time. Central Time and Eastern Time are an hour apart, so I was a full hour ahead of the bus. Better early than late, sure, but it left me more anxious to see what Combo Breaker had to offer.

When I finally arrived at the resort, it was one of the most beautiful venues I’ve been to, just looking at it from the outside. There was as much road as far as the eyes could see, the air was humid and the temperature was warm. Entering the venue, it lived up to the name of it being a resort. Indoor pools, window-side seating to have a better view of the golf course resort, various food courts and even a mini bar. The place was very huge. Huger than I initially imagined. I eventually, after some walking, found where Combo Breaker took place and after I picked up my badge, I took in the scenery.

The quietness of the resort clashed with the absolute noisy atmosphere of the main event area. People from all over walked about, conversated with others and played games on various setups whether it was tournament matches or casuals. To the right of me was the stage where people played on the stream station. It was there I saw the Tekken area and how massive the Tekken area was. With over 488 competitors, I’d expect a large mass of people, but it almost felt overwhelming. The event space was so huge, there were crowds just as big as the Tekken crowd, in other corners of the event stage, from the anime fighters to King of Fighters to Street Fighter V. There were also vendors right by the entrance who sold arcade parts, offered arcade stick mods, merch tables, and various beta build stations for games such as Fighting Layer EX, Soul Calibur 6, and BlazBlue Cross Tag.

Across the Megacenter area, there was a small yet almost as big gaming area where there were even more casual setups, a BYOC [Bring your own console] setup, where people played all types of games, and arcade cabinets from old school games such as Tempest, to pinball machines. Smaller games like Smash and Vampire Savior were also ran here for tournaments.

It was at this moment I knew that Combo Breaker was far from just a fighting game tournament, it was a video game convention as well. This realization didn’t hit me until the final day of Combo Breaker when I met this man, Demero, from Milwaukee. He was talking to me about one of the top Street Fighter V players, Smug, who I know of due to us both being from New York. He was telling me how respectful Smug was to his kids and how kind everyone was to each other, spectators and players alike.

On a grander scope, Demero also mentioned an interest on wanting to run events like these on a smaller scale back home, so he could potentially get the troubled youth of Milwaukee off the streets. Being I’m also from New York, the same as Smug, I take for granted just how many tournaments and locals there are here. But in a place like Milwaukee, grassroots events that could be started by a man with an ambition, may very well give troubled youth an outlet to stay off the streets, out of trouble, and hold a controller instead of a weapon.

A sentiment was also shared with Markman and Tasty Steve who I had the pleasure to talk to that Friday evening. They stressed the importance of tournaments where anyone can enter, play, and overall link up with other players who share the same passion as them. It isn’t about the winning or the losing, it’s all about learning and personal growth. It’s all about finding that connection with others to not only help you get better as a player but also as a person.

Steve was more passionate in the notion of locals being a cornerstone in the FGC, as he feels without people showing up to tournaments and their local tournaments, it won’t thrive as much within the upper echelon.

Markman was also a firm believer in encouraging players who believe that they cannot keep up with the top players due to their insecurities, to come out to the event anyway. No one can get better or level up if they limit themselves from doing so. Between talking to these two gentlemen on Friday and talking to Demero on Sunday, as well as others who only attended as a spectator to soak up the atmosphere and good vibes, it made me realize that the FGC extends far beyond simply competing. It exists for the love of the community whether you play the game competitively or not.

With that outlook in mind, winning wasn’t a goal in mind anymore. It was simply a question on how much I could learn and how far can what I already know take me. When I finally met Ando that Friday, he had a similar sentiment. As in the previous article, this was our first time in entering Combo Breaker and he was just as amazed at the venue and excited to play against others as I was, including how well run it was. We took pictures with the Tekken developer, Katsuhiro Harada, and saw some of the matches of Friday’s pools, before we briefly went our separate ways. Coincidentally, later on that night, we ran into each other again as we both had the same idea to get some last-minute casuals in before our matches.

That was another beautiful thing about the venue. Since it was 24 hours, and with over two thousand entrants, there were always people who were down to play games, no matter what time it was. Ando and I stayed until a quarter to 1, playing whoever we could, but the next night I stayed up well until 3 AM. It didn’t matter the time. The event halls were just as packed as it was if you arrived at 3 PM and for good reason. Playing offline against others is a luxury, as anyone who had dealt with the dreadfulness of online could tell you.

Saturday was the big day for the both of us, as our pools began two hours from each other, with Ando’s pool starting before mine. He was relatively nervous. The shark in the pool he was most concerned with was Victim of Ritual, a well-known Nina player known for his “pitbull-like” offense. The sharks in the water for my pool, in my opinion, was Swagmaster, who was known for her Miguel, and Ace Unlimited, a known Mishima player known for his explosive playstyle. For the former, I’ve had almost no experience with Miguel, so I wouldn’t have known what to do or what to expect. Mishima characters were always characters I’ve struggled with, so the fact that a high-level player was also swimming in the waters didn’t help me much.

The main conflict for Ando was whether to choose between using Paul or Geese. Both characters he felt comfortable with, but it boiled down to which character he felt ready to use in a tournament setting. While Geese has been used more and he has had more success with him, Paul was far easier to play for him. However, since his Paul shown signs of rust due to using Geese more, it was all about weighing pros and cons.

What I felt was nervousness all around because much like he has Geese, I had Kazumi who I wasn’t confident enough to use in the tournament. But she was always an option for me. I made the mistake of second guessing myself so I stuck with who I already know. The irony in that statement, was that if I could do one thing differently, I would have played Kazumi when I was down 1.

Ando plowed through his bracket, with the most notable adversary, Fred Distance, standing in his way. A clutch rage driver from his Paul clinched a tight victory and earned him the right to grant his wish. To play Victim of Ritual. On stream.

Naturally whatever nervousness he felt only amplified, with him only telling me that he’s not going to pay attention to the crowd behind him, and only focus on the game ahead of him. With his music playing through his earphones, he fought a hard-fought battle but ultimately fell 2-0 against him. Since this was winner’s finals, he still performed well enough to make it out of first phase of pools which meant he played later on that evening.

As far as my performance, I immediately lost to a Nina who I didn’t know even existed, M A D W A K. I was disoriented, because not only was I mentally prepared even though I played more than enough casuals, but the first lost took a lot out of me to the point where I gave up the second game freely. My biggest fear was going 0-2 in the tournament altogether, and going 0-2 in the very first match and getting sent to losers was not a good outlook for me. I had to snap out of it for my first game in losers, who I defeated soundly and was enough for a confidence boost. The second and third matches, a Katarina and a King respectively, was claimed without much difficulty although both players were good.

My biggest win of the pool was a rematch against M A D W A K, in which not only I was high off adrenaline for playing three straight, but after suffering a loss on stream against Swagmaster, I was more than ready for my revenge. And revenge I got. I switched my playstyle greatly to the point where it was too overwhelming for him and defeated him soundly, 2-0, just as he had defeated me 0-2, only this time I eliminated him from the tournament altogether. My momentum was cut short as I lost my loser’s semi’s match against Cade, effectively eliminating me. I was one win away from making it out of pools. Still, I had a damn good run in losers and I couldn’t be prouder of myself in how I did being it was my first Combo Breaker. Again, my only regret was not giving Kazumi a chance. I finished 97th which out of 488 people is nothing to cry about. I know I can do better next time, however.

Ando’s first match for the second pool was against Shirdel, an Alisa player from the UK, who quickly eliminated Ando from the tournament. At first, we both did not know who Shirdel was, but after researching him, he’s a pretty dominant force in London. Ando mentioned to me that Shirdel’s Alisa was unlike any he had ever played before, so he handled the matchup in a way which he tried to adapt to his playstyle, but he couldn’t no matter how hard he fought. Later on that night, when a friend and I were at the bar talking to another UK Tekken player, we both admitted that we did not know many of UK’s players, but UK and other European Tekken players were definitely of the silent killer majority. Europe in the FGC in general is an often-overlooked continent filled with so many hidden talents that takes so many by surprise. However, Ando couldn’t be too upset in how he performed. He felt like he could have done better, but he was more focused for the future regarding CEO and learning from the other players at Combo Breaker. Still, placing 65th, just shy of top 50, despite dealing with nerves, wasn’t a bad outing for the big guy. This is a reoccurring theme, but much like how I felt I should have gone Kazumi, his regret was not going Geese and instead sticking with Paul.

Decisions like these matter more than one would think. In a massive tournament like this, all it takes is two losses for it to be all over. I didn’t want to make any risky decisions that I would regret later, so I felt choosing Kazumi in my situation vs Cade would have been too risky as I wasn’t confident in her as I was in my main, Eddy. Ando had a similar sentiment when he insisted on sticking with Paul than going to Geese.

After several nights of reflection and playing casuals against people from all over the world including GoAttack, the Korean Master Raven player who made top 8, Ando feels ready for CEO. Combo Breaker humbled him as a player in regard to not only seeing his flaws, but also not caring whether a person is younger, older, or from another country. Each player should be taken as a threat whether you know them or not and that mentality shaped him into training and preparing for CEO.

One of the things I expect Ando will do differently, aside from soaking in character knowledge, is alter his mental psyche of playing against people in tournaments. I always felt as a competitor, 90% of the gameplay comes from your mind. Your mental cognition is what makes or breaks you. Limits or excels past your limitations. While he wasn’t upset with how he performed, knowing that he could do better is what prepares him for his hopeful comeback in CEO. I honestly cannot wait for that to take place and I will be cheering him on as well as Tunk.
