H is for Horse

The eighth animal in my animal alphabet series.

The animal featured is a Grey Trakehner Horse.

This project is actually a collaboration with my sister-in-law and niece, who brought me the idea and selected the animals and the design theme. I have been very happy that the animals have been a hit so far for my family!

I am working on other art in addition to this project, but you can look forward to the whole alphabet in the end!

Spoilers for the next breed. I just want to speak my thoughts into the void :P

I’m just hoping they move well otherwise all these potential plans go down the drain XD. If their animations would be anything like the American Paints, Arabians, or Haflingers I will be SOLD!!

We’ve got a good basic bay. Not too light nor too dark, just a nice middle ground bay. Tbh the dark shoulder patch could be a deal breaker potentially. But who knows what it’ll look like in game. Otherwise, it currently has no markings and therefore I deem it too plain for my tastes

Now this one!!!! Oh, I’ve been waiting for a horse like this! Okay so I’m into Attack on Titan, right? Regardless of the current arcs in the anime. That sweet time when titans were a mystery, and the Survey Corps traversed the infested land and escaped via horseback. I have an AoT OC and being the horse girl that I am, I gave her like 6 horses in her charge. One of them, being the main one Lily would train on, was a lighter bay with some sort of stripe or blaze face marking. Back when the Trakehner came out, it was tempting to get that one to be this embodiment. But it was too light. There was the Thoroughbred that was a little closer to the desired color but had no markings. But now!! Axel could potentially finally have a solidified rendition!

I am also a huge sucker for chestnuts. I have been OBSESSED with a song called Cyberpunk by Ateez since they uploaded a preview of their latest album. Every now and then I’ll watch jumping events on YouTube with music when I’m bored. The timing of some songs and the jumps of the horse match and makes it pretty fun! and I’ve come to associate the song with a chestnut. I do have plans to name a horse Pirate King aka Treasure, but idk if that fits this horse specifically. I’ll need to find a name if I like them. It’ll be down to how they are in game that’ll be the deciding factor

I’m normally a HUGE fan of dark bays. A little biased because Brave Rebel is my soul horse, the ever-iconic dark bay Morgan. I’m still waiting for the updated Morgans, but if they don’t do them justice, I’ll just have to remake Rebel as a different breed that has similar color. This horse....wouldn’t be the remake option. It looks kind of like an ashy dark bay. Cool on its own, but doesn’t really call my name

A buckskin? A cutie! Not my personal cup of tea, but I will enjoy other people riding around on this horse and seeing their tack ideas (that I may or may not end up stealing)

A typical black horse yada yada, BUT! It is what I’m looking for as an anime boy™. Megumi from Jujutsu Kaisen to be exact. I still haven’t decided if the name should be Divine Shadow or Divine Abyss. He will have all the pets! A handful in rotation to mimic his shikigami. The brown raven for Nue, a rabbit for his “rabbit escape”, and I’m hoping we’ll get bigger running pets. Especially wolves or just a big dog that’s close enough for his iconic demon dogs!

Another chestnut that’s darker than the previous one. I like this color, but again, no markings currently. Markings or a lack thereof will make or break a horse for me. If it has cute markings, I’ll take it! If it stays a plain bagel, then I’ll skip it for another

This one is a potential horse. Will it end up being a released coat? Will it be made into something else? Who knows! But if it does end up making the cut and going from a blinding white to a sweetly dappled grey (ideally like the Shire, those dapples are just the right amount for me on a mostly “white” horse in game!) then I will take it! Only if the animations are good. Because the theme for a sporty white/grey horse is one of my favorite bois, Inumaki from again Jujutsu Kaisen. Once I saw that you could name a horse “Thorn” in game, I HAD to plan a horse for Toge! As his name translates to Thorn. I just need to wait for the right horse. Could this be the one?

This one while it’s speculated to be changed or removed, it does have a grey muzzle that has a hint of a nose marking. Soooo we’ll see!

Kirito probably would have some kinda cool, strong dark horse, maybe a Friesian or maybe a mustang

Asuna I feel like she'd have a very gentle but still fast and strong horse. Maybe an Andalusian. Maybe a white one. Or maybe a grey one with a white mane. Going well with her white and red / white and blueish color scheme.

For leafa is a tough one. But I imagine her with a Arabian or a trakehner. Or maybe even a bulkier kind. Like a Irish cob. Likely one with a palomino or cream coat of some kind.

Silica I'm between either maybe an appaloosa or an haflinger. Or if you want to go the complete opposite size. A Percheron or a Clydesdale.

Lis is also difficult. But I could see her with a Cleveland bay (English horse) or a fell pony (also British)

For Sinon I could think maybe. Could have a hanoverian, or an anglo-arabian.

Klein could probably have a Kisouma (samurai horse) or a quarter horse

Agil dutch draft. Or a shire.

i love this so much also i could see lis with a shetland pony. not to ride just to hang out with

The Cavalry is coming! ... Well, their horses are, at any rate. And Principessa, the grey one, is a force to be reckoned with on her own. Some horse concepts for Vampirony. Designing horses is definetly a favorite past time of mine - for my project, I want to make it a point of having the equines we see actually appear as individuals rather than generic bays or something.

Vampirony is mostly set in mid to late 19th Prussia, so the first step in creating the first pons was to find out what breed would've been most commonly used in the Prussian cavalry. It should come as no surprise that Prussia (being Prussia) had breeding programs for the expressed purpose of rearing horses for military and representation purposes starting in the late 1700s. The 'Gestüt Trakehnen' (situtated in the former provence of East Prussia, existant till 1944; the region is now part of modern Russia) was the most important amongst the stud farms, also becoming the namesake for a breed of horse still popular today - the Trakehner. So it stood to reason to model the cavalry horses after this breed. The most common coat color appeared to be bay, so I went with that. Honestly, for me as an artist it's a quite nice color to work with, simply due to the variety it offers. The exception here is the aforementioned Principessa, the Grey, who is the Rittmeisters/captain's stead - now his design is still in the works, as are his troops, but I hope to introduce you to the boys soon. For the time being, have their horses.

I keep coming back to the idea of a modern equestrian verse. Instead of martial arts, Mr. Leonhardt shunts Annie towards eventing. By the time she’s in her late teens / early twenties, she’s a rider of considerable renown – even if she does have a reputation for being ruthless, and for pushing her horses hard. At her peak, she competes at a national and international level, riding a formidable 16hh dapple grey Russian Trakehner mare under the show name Etched in Ice (Annie just calls her Sketch for short).

Game vs. Story

@windforestsso did this one and it sounded fun!

Horses:

Game: I own 115 horses as of now... obviously not all of them would belong to Will Story: I haven’t entirely decided all horses that Will owns herself.. As of right now there’s 3 horses that are definitely hers. My starter horse, Frosty (gelding), Connor (dark bay Trakehner gelding) and Hank (grey clydesdale stallion). The rest are horses that Will trains for other people. Wether they are problem horses or just inexperienced, she works with them. Sometimes it’s to make them ready to sell, other times it’s just because it’s something the owner can’t do themselves. I have a few horses that I would like to be permanent in the stable like Zuko (buckskin Lusitano stallion), Reaper (sooty black ?? Andalusian stallion) and a few others.. but I don’t know how to do that yet.. It feels like a lot to have Will own that many horses herself.

Pets:

Game: I have 21 pets in game. 1 panda ray, 1 pumpkin, 1 seal, 1 frog, 1 spider (my favourite), 6 cats, 2 dogs, 2 squirrels, 2 foxes, 2 seagulls and 2 pigs Story: Will doesn’t have any pets. But the barn where she has her horses has two stable cats.. who are as of now unnamed.

Home:

Game: I live in New Hillcrest, I have lived there since I opened Epona and don’t plan on leaving. Story: Will is not originally from Jorvik. Since she is taught in western mostly, I imagine her being from the US somewhere. I haven’t fully worked out where yet. But she used to live and work on a ranch. When moving to Jorvik, she wanted to stay somewhere slightly different but still sort of similar. Which is why she chose to set up in New Hillcrest. The sea and town life is new to her, but the neighboring island with open fields and wild horses felt close to home.

Clothes:

Game: I have a lot of clothes... let’s just say that. I try to stay close to my own personal style as much as possible but can switch it up for events and similar stuff like that. I do tend to dress mostly in Western though. Story: Will is the kind of person who would dress in what she finds the most comfortable. Most of the time you’ll see her in jeans, boots, and a hoodie (or button up if it’s too warm for a hoodie). A cowboy hat is also a common accessory on her. Since she’s training other people’s horses in both western and english (and other) she does own a pair of regular old riding pants and boots as well.. but you’ll never see her dress fancier than that. Hiding deep in her closet is some nice chaps and shirts for reining, even though she doesn’t have as much time to compete much anymore.

Backstory:

Game: As mentioned by the one who created this.. the story for our character isn’t that elaborate. Story: As mentioned, Will comes from a ranch in the US. When she was still quite young, she had a run-in with a mountain lion, which resulted in permanent scars across her face. She came to Jorvik to work. Considering it is equestrian centered she figured she would have a lot to do, which she does. She’s not much for the magic stuff and prefers to try to keep out of it but considering how much of it there is, that’s not going so well. Will is kind of a loner, who prefers the company of her horses over people. Which is why she usually doesn’t stick around to talk much to the other soul riders.. or anyone really. She has become quite fond of Avalon though. Maybe because Avalon isn’t trying to get her to “reach her destiny” all the time. Seriously.. all Will wants to do is train horses, is that too much to ask?
