Power Haus Creative’s Black August Month Begins With Support For Activist Jamil Al-Amin

Black August Month has now officially kicked off.

The event is a widespread call to action that encompasses fasting, raising awareness, and offering resources for political prisoners. It is a collaborative effort between Power Haus Creative and community partners Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, Students for Imam Jamil, Black Art in America, and Black Power Media.

The monthlong initiative was founded in California during the 1970s following a prison uprising and the deaths of brothers Johnathan and George Jackson. This year, it is being used to spread awareness and advocate for a new trial for civil rights activist Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin.

Formerly H. Rap Brown, Al-Amin has been incarcerated since 2002. Still, his contributions to the Black liberation movement remain intact. Some consider Al-Amin an enigma. He is the face of an Anti-Riot Act. He was a part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. And now he sits in Supermax prison, convicted of murder. However, his son Kairi Al-Amin, Power Haus Creative, and its partners continue to fight for justice after over two decades, alleging cruel and unusual punishment and wrongful conviction. 

“No tangible noise was ever made and as such, my father’s conviction and subsequent exile, a vendetta realized, has gone unchecked,” wrote Kairi Al-Amin in a 2020 petition calling for a new trial.

“The cruel and unusual punishment, the confession of another man, the medical neglect in hopes that he dies, the gag order, the federal holding of a state prisoner away from his attorneys and family, we’ve done nothing about anything and because of our lack of action, much like the man himself, the truth about this case and his legacy have been erased from public view.”

The petition has garnered over 75,000 signatures in three years, but it is still a long way from its goal of 150,000. Despite this, Al-Amin’s advocates remain adamant about their mission, hoping to secure a retrial.

Summayah Ali, founder, and CEO of Power Haus Creative spoke about Al-Amin’s circumstances. “All of our political prisoners need to be released. In the case of Dr. Mutulu Shakur, he was imprisoned for nearly 37 years only to transition eight months after release. We don’t want that for Imam Jamil or anyone that was selfless enough to pave the way for some of the very privileges we benefit from today,” she told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“They fought for us and deserve far better treatment than this,” she continued.

“My children are in their early 20s and I remind them to sit with the elders as often as possible. As a Muslim woman who’s Black, a  mother, Black Arts Organizer, and an activist I believe we have a responsibility to fight the good fight for those who tilled the soil for us. Imam Jamil is not just a champion for the community but also for the arts. He has said how much the arts played a significant role in the civil rights movement.  We are using the Art of Activism to fight back.”

In line with this mission, participating partners will also be “Feeding the Community,” literally and figuratively, throughout August. Through virtual sessions, scholars and activists will share different information and resources. 

Food drive donations will be accepted throughout the month at the Black Art in America Gallery at 1802 Connaly Dr. in East Point, Georgia. Later this month, on Aug. 28, human rights activist and former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul Rauf will speak at the gallery on an “Art of Activism” panel. This ain't all Disco-dancing and party-prancing - Diane LOVES Roller Derby too. And growing up in a house full of older-'brothas', Diane knows how to tussle.

More into Impact Play, you're more likely to catch an elbow to the teeth rather than a web to the face.

Diane punches, trips, headbutts, elbows, shoves, chokeholds - you name it, she'll do it. And her main weapon are her skates.

Diane is known to fight 'feet-first', with lots of kicks, and her skates are like her brass knuckles.

Getting kicked in the face with the truck (metal part) of her skates, you're 100% coming out of it with a broken nose. Lots of criminals in 1294 has crooked noses for a reason, ouch.

The Speed -

Diane's biggest asset is her speed.

Categorized by Lyla's systems as a 'Speedster Spider', like Jessica Drew - Diane belongs to a class of Spider's known for showing up fast and ending fights quick.

If you're on foot, on bike, in a car - you're not out-running her. If you're on land - you're not out-gunning her. If she wants to catch you, she's on your ass like white on rice.

People don't expect much from the skates - but surprisingly, she avoids much of the typical issues most Speedsters do. No gas tank to worry about, no loud engine, no need to stick to streets, can't be knocked off them - plus she can stick to freaking walls.

She's a speed power-house all by herself.

With Super-strength and training, Diane has legs stronger than Serena Williams on steroids. Using tactics to pick up speed, flips, skating on walls, and holding on to cars, Diane can clock up to 85-100mph (130-160kph) - almost twice as fast as the top speed skater, or a bit over the world's fastest pitch, doing this by using her webs as a slingshot for her.

She's fucking fast.

Style Points -

If you're gonna do it, do it well, am I right?

Diane is all for the style points - often pulling flips, axel spins, and turns from figure skating.

Part function and Part flair - Diane does this to pick up velocity while skating, or she'll attach one of her gold bangles to a web, spinning rapidly to swing it around her.

But it's also for fun. Like most Spider-people, she loves to show off and talk back during battle, and doing flips are her way of running circles around a villain.

You're a hardened criminal with malicious intent but you're getting your ass-beat by a walking Lisa Frank sticker, PLUS she's listening to Rick James on a Walkman, PLUS she's doing Olympic flips and shit.

This has become an in-joke with her fans.

From a New York where the neighborhoods are split into strict 'Police-Managed' and Black Panther territories - the general opinion of the public is pretty split on Disco-Spider because of it. At the very least, J.Jonah - a more militant Black Panther radio host - seems to think she's conceited and a 'lost sista'. Whatever, Hotep.

But one of the symbols of support for Disco-Spider is a simple white sign with a ten on it - like figure skating judges.

Created by Disco's supporters at the Discos and Queer Clubs she protects from police - the signs give Diane 10 out of 10's on style points.

Likewise, Black-Owned shops in the area can display a small '10' sign in their window to show they're under Disco's protection, along with '10' stickers on sign posts that are placed in areas she's considered to watch and patrol.

Disco and her supporters call her territory 'Disco's Haus', often referring to Disco as 'MamaDisco', though - they don't know Diane's really only 20. For their safety, most of them do not know who she is, and Disco might attend queer balls and discos masked. Though she usually just goes as plain-ol (yeah right) Diane.

Isn't it crazy that Diane ALWAYS misses it when Disco is here? Bummer.

Ich hab eine andere Auflage, deshalb weiß ich nicht, wo welches Gedicht bei dir ist. Deshalb sag ich einfach mal 30 :)

Gedicht: Quasi ein Mahnbrief

Leo schiebt den Brief in die schmale Bretterfuge des Baumhauses, in der auch die anderen Zettel stecken. Sieben sind es jetzt schon, seit Adam und er sich das letzte Mal getroffen haben. Sieben Briefe in zwei Wochen und Adam hat keinen davon abgeholt.

Lieber Adam, ich hoffe, du hältst durch.

Adam hat bereits angekündigt, dass sie sich erstmal länger nicht sehen können. Dass er seiner Mutter helfen muss zurechtzukommen. Leo versteht das natürlich. Er will sich gar nicht vorstellen, was es da alles zu regeln gibt: die Versicherung, das Krankenhaus, die Fragen der Nachbarn, der Wiederaufbau der Garage. Trotzdem vermisst er Adam, ihre Zeit im Baumhaus.

Hast du auch solche Albträume?

Das letzte Mal, als sie hier oben gesessen sind, war die Stimmung angespannt. Leo war müde und nervös, Adam rastlos und zerstreut. Die Sache in der Garage war noch keinen Monat her und verfolgte sie bei jedem Schritt. Oder zumindest Leo.

Ich hab dir all die Jahre nicht geholfen.

"Sag mal Leo, glaubst du an die Liebe?" hat Adam plötzlich gefragt und dabei so komisch geguckt, dass Leo das Herz fast aus dem Hals gesprungen wäre.

"Nein", hat er schnell gesagt und gelacht, panisch, leise, klein. Gehofft, dass Adam nicht sein Gesicht gesehen hat.

Dabei wissen sie doch beide, dass Leo der Träumer von ihnen ist. Derjenige, der Gedichte verschlingt und Adam hinterher den Band in die Hände drückt, damit der auch mal was anderes als Fantasy liest.

"Die sind gut, glaub mir", sagte er. Sagte nicht, dass "Der Panther" ihn besonders an Adam erinnert. "Gib's mir zurück, wenn wir uns das nächste Mal sehen."

Hast du den Rilke schon durch?

Bald ist Abiball und Leo fragt sich, ob Adam bis dahin wieder Zeit hat. Ob Leo es wagen kann, ihn zu fragen. Sie haben beide nicht viele gute Erinnerungen an die Schule, aber es wäre schön, zumindest diese eine zu haben. Billigen Punsch zu trinken und unbeholfen am Rand der Tanzfläche zu stehen. Und dann hinaus in die Welt, so wie sie es schon seit Jahren geplant haben. Gemeinsam.

Schreib doch mal zurück.

Leo wirft einen Blick auf das Fernglas, das wie immer an seinem angestammten Haken hängt. Einen Moment lang überlegt er sich hindurchzuschauen, doch er weiß, dass er nichts sehen wird. Adams Haus ist ruhig, seit der alte Schürk nicht mehr jeden Tag dort herumbrüllt. Noch ruhiger, seit Adam nicht mehr herauskommt, um sich mit Leo zu treffen.

Du fehlst mir.

Ein letztes Mal fährt er mit dem Finger über die ganzen zusammengefalteten Nachrichten in ihrem geheimen Briefkasten. Neulich hat es geregnet und ein paar der Briefe sind jetzt wellig. Adam wird sich nicht daran stören, aber Leo nimmt sich vor, bald einmal das Dach des Baumhauses auszubessern. Nächstes Mal, denkt er, während er die Stufen wieder runterklettert. Und nächstes Mal hat er dann vielleicht auch eine Antwort von Adam.

Ich hab diesen Tag lange herbeigefürchtet, hab den Gedanken an den Tag, an dem Du mal nicht mehr bei mir bist, so weit wie möglich von mir weggeschoben. Weil ich es mir einfach nicht vorstellen konnte, wie meine Welt ohne Dich aussehen könnte. Ich wollte es mir auch nicht vorstellen. Allein der Gedanke tat schon so weh, dass ich damit nichts zu tun haben wollte. Du warst schließlich mehr als mein halbes Leben bei mir, bist in diesem Haus geboren und warst immer da - 15 Jahre, 7 Monate und 14 Tage lang.

"Ach Tinker", das werde ich in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen wohl noch öfter seufzen. Wenn ich in mein Zimmer komme und Du nicht auf meinem Bett liegst und Gemütlichkeit verbreitest. Wenn ich morgens die Vögel draußen füttere und dann nicht mit Katzenfutter nach draußen komme, um Dich rein zu holen. Wenn ich morgens ausschlafen kann, ohne dass Du jedes Mal laut maunzend vor meiner Tür stehst und Einlass verlangst, sobald ich mich im Bett umdrehe. Wenn ich meine Arbeit nicht unterbrechen muss, weil Du noch ein Leckerli haben oder nach draußen in die Sonne möchtest. Wenn ich mir nicht gerade erst die Hände eingecremt habe (mit der Handcreme, die Du nicht magst), nur um sie zwei Minuten später quasi wieder abzuwaschen, weil ich Dich nochmal gefüttert hab. Wenn ich meine Zimmertür nicht mit einem Tuch offen halten muss, damit Du auch dann rein und raus kannst, wenn ich gerade nicht da bin. Wenn ich an der Tür zu Deinem Futterplatz vorbeigehe und da kein Tuch mehr dranhängt, das sie immer für Dich aufgehalten hat. Wenn ich die Tagesdecke auf meinem Bett nicht feststecken muss, damit Du sie nicht wegziehen und direkt auf meiner Bettdecke liegen kannst. Wenn ich beim Kochen Musik höre und denke, ich hätte Dich auf dem Flur gehört. Wenn die anderen nach Hause kommen und Dich nicht mit reinbringen. Wenn ich rausgehe und Du nicht aus dem Nichts auftauchst und mit rein möchtest. Wenn Du nicht auf dem Terrassentisch sitzt und Dein Königreich überblickst während Du auf Einlass wartest. Wenn Du beim Abendessen nicht mehr kommst, um Dir ein wenig Käse zu erbetteln. (Betteln hat ja auch nur 15 Jahre gedauert, bis du's raushattest)

Du fehlst mir jetzt schon so sehr, in all diesen kleinen Momenten, mit all Deinen Eigenheiten. Und es wird wohl noch eine Weile dauern, bis ich mich an Dein Fehlen gewöhnt hab. Daran, kein Häufchen Gemütlichkeit mehr irgendwo rumliegend zu finden und dahinzuschmelzen, weil Du so niedlich bist. Ich hoffe, Du weißt, wie sehr Du geliebt wurdest (auch wenn wir es Dir nicht jeden Tag gesagt haben). Der Schmerz wird sicherlich irgendwann weniger werden, aber die Liebe wird bleiben. Du wirst immer einen ganz besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben.
