Researchers discover tiny galaxy with big star power using James Webb telescope Using first-of-their-kind observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, a University of Minnesota Twin Cities-led team looked more than 13 billion years into the past to discover a unique, minuscule galaxy that generated new stars at an extremely high rate for its size. The galaxy is one of the smallest ever discovered at this distance—around 500 million years after the Big Bang—and could help astronomers learn more about galaxies that were present shortly after the Universe came into existence. The paper is published in Science, one of the world's top peer-reviewed academic journals. The University of Minnesota researchers were one of the first teams to study a distant galaxy using the James Webb Space Telescope, and their findings will be among the first ever published. “This galaxy is far beyond the reach of all telescopes except the James Webb, and these first-of-their-kind observations of the distant galaxy are spectacular,” said Patrick Kelly, senior author of the paper and an assistant professor in the University of Minnesota School of Physics and Astronomy. “Here, we’re able to see most of the way back to the Big Bang, and we've never looked at galaxies when the universe was this young in this level of detail. The galaxy’s volume is roughly a millionth of the Milky Way’s, but we can see that it’s still forming the same numbers of stars each year.” The James Webb telescope can observe a wide enough field to image an entire galaxy cluster at once. The researchers were able to find and study this new, tiny galaxy because of a phenomenon called gravitational lensing—where mass, such as that in a galaxy or galaxy cluster, bends and magnifies light. A galaxy cluster lens caused this small background galaxy to appear 20 times brighter than it would if the cluster were not magnifying its light. The researchers then used spectroscopy to measure how far away the galaxy was, in addition to some of its physical and chemical properties. Studying galaxies that were present when the Universe was this much younger can help scientists get closer to answering a huge question in astronomy regarding how the Universe became reionized. “The galaxies that existed when the Universe was in its infancy are very different from what we see in the nearby Universe now,” explained Hayley Williams, first author on the paper and a Ph.D. student at the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics. “This discovery can help us learn more about the characteristics of those first galaxies, how they differ from nearby galaxies, and how the earlier galaxies formed.” The James Webb telescope can collect about 10 times as much light as the Hubble Space Telescope and is much more sensitive at redder, longer wavelengths in the infrared spectrum. This allows scientists to access an entirely new window of data, the researchers said. “The James Webb Space Telescope has this amazing capability to see extremely far into the universe,” Williams said. “This is one of the most exciting things about this paper. We're seeing things that previous telescopes would have ever been able to capture. It’s basically getting a snapshot of our universe in the first 500 million years of its life.” The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and NASA through the Space Telescope Science Institute, with additional funding from the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation and the Spanish State Research Agency. In addition to Williams and Kelly, the research team included University of Minnesota School of Physics and Astronomy postdoctoral researcher Wenlei Chen, Professor Claudia Scarlata, Ph.D. student Yu-Heng Lin, and graduate student Noah Rogers; University of Copenhagen researchers Gabriel Brammer, Jens Hjorth, and Danial Langeroodi; Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Associate Professor Adi Zitrin; University of California Los Angeles faculty member Tomasso Treu; Space Telescope Science Institute researchers Anton Koekemoer, Lou Strolger, and Justin Pierel; Chiba University faculty member Masamune Oguri; University of Cantebria researcher Jose Diego; Astronomical Observatory of Trieste researcher Mario Nonino; University of the Basque Country Professor Tom Broadhurst; University of La Laguna researchers Ismael Perez-Fournon and Frederick Poidevin; University of California Santa Cruz Assistant Professor Ryan Foley; Rutgers University Professor Saurabh Jha; University of California Berkeley Professor Alexei Filippenko; and University of Tokyo postdoctoral researcher Lilan Yang. Nickname: Well, Anna’s technically my nickname, so?
Zodiac: leo!
Height: 5′2! So a short girl!
Last Thing I Googled: heart emoji (I’m on a laptop, so I don’t have emojis in easy reach)
Song Stuck In My Head: Unity by Alan Walker
Followers: I’m a smol blog compared to some others, but I’m at 41 right now! (which I’m very pleased with!)
Amount of sleep: probably between 6 and 8? I really don’t have a great sleeping record.
Lucky Numbers: 15 and 4
Favourite Song: Girls like girls by Hayley Kiyoko or Save Yourself (I’ll Hold Them Back) by My Chemical Romance
Favourite Instrument: piano! I used to play (not very well though).
Favourite Authors: mmmm... I’d say I have more favourite books than authors, but I’m a fan of Cat Clarke and Phillip Pullman!
Dream Job: basic, but a writer. It’s been the same ever since I was very small.
Aesthetic: idk how to answer this, but... I guess I wear a lot of leather jackets and absurdly brightly coloured converse. Every room in my house has some sort of bookshelf filled to the absolute brim with books or notebooks, and I have a lot of pretty glass ornaments. So...?
Favourite Animal: I have three: wolves, magpies and crows. Wolves because I’m a bit basic, and magpies and crows because there’s two groups of them that live right by my house and I get to observe them a lot.
Random: hmmm. Over lockdown, I decided to grow my hair out from really short to about shoulder length. It’s not been this long in three years, and now it’s much curlier and thicker than it used to be, so it’s constantly a surprise seeing so. much. hair.

Favourite Movie: Into the Spiderverse (because yes, this movie’s gorgeous) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (I know this last one’s not very good, but it’s just so fun for me). Also, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (it’s one of those shorter, lower-funded movies, but it’s so freaking fun!)

Voting is now open! You can vote for your favourite fics HERE!
by loving you i’m losing me every night (Rated E) [Bellamy/Clarke]
He leans back down to kiss her again, softer this time, just a chaste peck at first, taking her bottom lip in between his next, but then she stops him with a firm squeeze of her fingers around his wrist. “No,” she demands, even if her voice shakes, slowly guiding his hand down her neck. Her blue eyes are desperate on his, a midnight blue, and he knows she needs this. She doesn’t want soft and sweet, doesn’t like the intimacy of it, not with him at least, even if that is what he craves desperately. He just wants to touch her, be close to her. Loving her is a lot like worship.
Taste like Home (Rated E) [Emori/Murphy]
Murphy is about to be floated for a crime Emori committed. Stupid soulmates and stupid falling-in-love-with-your-best-friend, right?
i paint you in the corner of my mind (Rated M) [Bellamy/Clarke]
After Clarke Griffin’s parents die in a house fire, the courts determine that it’s best for her to grieve and recover away from the city she’s grown up in. So she moves from the industrial city of Polis to the rural wetlands of Arkadia to live with her uncle, Marcus Kane. But when the sadness and mourning remain, he deems it necessary to acquire her a companion.
Both as a teacher and a friend, Bellamy Blake is an unexpected addition to her new life. And there’s something about him that also ignites new feelings within her that she can only pray that he reciprocates.
you’re mine (all i can think about) (Rated E) [Bellamy/Clarke]
He hates Hollywood, he hates the blatant favouritism and toxicity, he hates those rich assholes who pretend to sympathise with the working class and sing Imagine from the comfort of their million dollar homes. He hates practically everything the Griffins stand for, with their picture perfect family and mountains of cash and all the charities they endorse just so it will look good on their tax returns.
He despises all of it.
And then he ended up on their payroll as Clarke Griffin’s fucking bodyguard.
Strawberries and Cream (Rated E) [Octavia/Niylah]
Sure, Niylah Keene was freaking gorgeous, and every time she passed her in the hallway, her throat went dry and she had to quickly duck into her apartment before she did something she would regret, but would Octavia admit she had a massive crush on her new neighbour?
No. The answer was no.
in the heat of two suns (Rated E) [Bellamy/Clarke]
After waking up, Gabriel kills Russell as revenge for the Primes’ killing of Josephine’s last host. He pretends to be Bellamy to find out how many other Nightbloods there are and makes a plan to awaken his beloved. As an eclipse approaches, he cozies up with a suspicious Clarke, but before Gabriel can choke her out, his host body wakes up.
or five times Bellamy chokes someone to death in order to survive and one time he doesn’t.
time has brought your heart to me (Rated E) [Bellamy/Echo]
High up in the mountains that towered over Eden, where the snow swirled around in the wind, lived the last pocket of elves in the kingdom. When Echo made the journey to the ground to spy on the humans, she had no idea that her story was only beginning, and that the man she met would remain in her heart for centuries to come.
Are we just friends? (Rated E) [Clarke/Lexa]
Lexa has spent weeks now being pulled back and forth by a pretty blonde girl who can't seem to make up her mind. She calls, she says sweet things, they fuck... and then she goes right back to her boyfriend.
So when Lexa sees her at a party with him, it all finally comes to a head.
--
Based on Curious by Hayley Kiyoko! Lexa is the Hayley character, and Clarke is the video girl
The happiest she’d ever been (Rated E) [Bellamy/Echo]
It's 1945, and the war has ended, but Echo's husband Bellamy still has not been sent home. She misses him terribly, but a surprise gift in the mail helps her miss him just a little less. The dildo he sent her, and the filthy letter, definitely help with that.
warm me baby (Rated E) [Bryan/Miller]
When the heating system on the Ark goes offline, Miller goes to check on his boyfriend... and then they end up in Bryan's private quarters with nowhere to be for an indefinite length of time.
if we met at morning (in the dropship) (Rated E) [Bellamy/Clarke]
It was usually early in the morning, as the sun was just beginning to rise and the colors of the tent were still faded, when Clarke Griffin wanted to get off.
tickled pink in shades of color (Rated E) [Bellamy/Clarke]
Clarke’s not really sure what convinces her to try a coupley video challenge with an unaware Bellamy when they very clearly are not a couple. She’s really not sure how she didn’t expect that one to blow up in her face.
And then she somehow has to paint his bare body for a virtual gallery she committed a contribution to?
What could possibly go wrong?
(So many things. So many things can go wrong.)
((But maybe they could also go right?))

The Gospel according to David and Michael
transcribed from [x]
Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s darkly comic novel about the battle between good and evil, comes to Amazon Prime this spring. To mark the occasion, the British stars of this hugely anticipated show  — Michael Sheen and David Tennant  — take New York in style. HAYLEY CAMPBELL meets them.
It’s Sunday morning in New York City and it’s snowing outside the warm, jazz-filled Beekman hotel, where a 50th-birthday balloon has been trapped for months at the apex of the glass atrium at the top of one of the city’s first skyscrapers. One thousand New Year’s Eve balloons have risen and fallen in the time this one silver balloon has taken to not die. If the apocalypse were to arrive tomorrow, this balloon would survive along with the cockroaches, the deep-sea fish, and the angel and the demon who tried to avert the disaster. If the prophecies of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s cult novel Good Omens prove to be correct, this balloon would bob high above their heads as it is doing now — above Michael Sheen and David Tennant, light and dark, good and evil, an angel and a demon sitting either side of me in lower Manhattan, eating eggs.
I last saw these two together in 2017, in the middle of London’s Battersea Park, shooting some early scenes of their hugely anticipated television show. Good Omens is about the birth of Satan, the coming of the End Times, and an angel (Aziraphale — who has been living on Earth since the dawn of creation and is currently working in a bookshop avoiding selling books because he really just likes to collect them) and a demon (Crowley — who used to be known as Crawly, the snake who tempted Eve with the apple). The pair have spent so much time on earth that they’ve come to quite like it, and don’t much fancy the idea of it all ending. The novel was published in 1990 and has gone on to become so loved that it is rare to see a pristine copy in the world: copies of Good Omens almost always come pre-dunked in tea. Shortly before his death from Alzheimer’s in early 2015, Pratchett wrote an email to his collaborator Gaiman asking him to take it to the screen, to do it properly. “I’m making it for Terry,” says Gaiman. “I wanted to make the thing that Terry would have liked.”
Sheen and Tennant star as the angelic and demonic representatives of their respective head offices, Heaven and Hell, along with a knee-weakening list of stars including Jon Hamm as the archangel Gabriel, Spinal Tap’s Michael McKean as the last of a once proud witchfinder army, and Frances McDormand as the voice of God. There’s Miranda Richardson, Jack Whitehall, three quarters of the League of Gentlemen, and Nick Offerman as the father of the Antichrist (sort of). The cast list reads like someone collecting acting talent to put on an ark ready for a biblical flood.
For months, we have tried to get them together again to talk about the end of the world. But life and work had them circling the globe separately, unmatchable as opposing magnets. Sheen is currently in New York filming The Good Fight, in which he plays a Machiavellian lawyer, and Tennant has flown in on the red-eye from Phoenix, Arizona, where he was appearing at the Ace Comic Con, mobbed by Doctor Who fans. Both of them have, since they last saw each other, grown beards. Tennant is ecstatic about the beards, and both are thrilled to see each other, and New York, again.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in New York over the years now,” says Sheen. “But still there’s times where you look at something and you think it just looks so incredibly beautiful, or strange, or filmic. It never loses that sense of unreality. I love being able to take it in by walking through the streets. Los Angeles feels like everything happens indoors, whereas here in New York, everything happens outdoors.”
“I do like New York,” adds Tennant. “I love a big city, and I love a busy city.”
Tennant and Sheen have bumped into each other before, both appearing in Stephen Fry’s 2003 film Bright Young Things, but they were never in the same scene. Sheen voice a character in an episode of Doctor Who written by Gaiman, but by then Tennant’s Doctor had regenerated. They tend to go for similar roles so there’s rarely a chance for them to both be cast — it’s usually one or the other. Gaiman, the author and showrunner of Good Omens, selected Sheen for the role. “I’ve known Michael for about a decade and one of the things that always impressed me about him was his goodness,” he says. “He’s just very good. He radiates goodness and lovability. I was always fascinated by the fact that he tends to play characters who, at least on the outside, are sort of brittle and perhaps a little damaged or dangerous.”
Selecting an actor to play the BMW driving, skinny-jeans-wearing demon was an equally tricky task. “For David, I was writing episode three and there is a scene set in a church. I had to bring Crowley on and suddenly I knew exactly how I needed that scene to be done in order to work: with him coming down the aisle hopping from foot to foot, going ‘ow ow ow ow ow!’ like he’s at the beach in bare feet. Only David Tennant could do that right. People seemed baffled when it was announced that they were cast because they’re a similar kind of actor, but the similarities between them felt so incredibly right when you’re building this kind of thing.”
Tennant and Sheen joke that when the theatre production of Good Omens (hold your horses, there isn’t one) travels the world, they will swap roles every night, even though Sheen says he couldn’t imagine it the other way around: “Ultimately I don’t think I can pull off cool,” he says, as Tennant scoffs in disbelief. “I think it just suits my natural being, that I’m kind of a worrier, and a little bit too anal for my own good. Things annoy me if they’re not quite right. And yet I like to think of myself as being a good person. So all of that hypocrisy and finickiness seems to lend itself to the natural rhythm of Aziraphale.”
“I love that you describe Crowley as cool,” laughs Tennant. “I think he thinks he’s cool, but isn’t.”
Tennant is adamant that having Gaiman as a showrunner is the pin that is holding this strange world together, one that is “tonally sort of nebulous”, but definitely very funny, and one that would benefit from a bingewatch to take it in all at once (all six episodes will be available on Amazon at once and later the BBC will broadcast them week-by-week). “I think if anyone else was running this they would’ve normalised it, would’ve made it saner, and would’ve ironed out some of the quirks of it,” he says. “Neil’s been fantastically clever at making it televisual where he had to, but it still has the madness, the impracticality of the book.”
Plus, there’s the fact that Gaiman is 50 per cent of the book. Because of that, his casting choices landed a little more softly in the world of Good Omens fandom. But Sheen and Tennant aren’t too worried about being unwelcome: they have in their short time as Aziraphale and Crowley discovered that Good Omens fans may be devoted to the point of madness (the cosplay and pornographic fan fiction has already begun), but they are certainly kind. “I have found that Neil’s work is almost like the Arthurian sword in the stone,” says Sheen. “You can only pull the sword out if you are pure of heart. And I think you only like Neil’s stuff if there’s something about you that means you won’t be mean to people on the whole.”
“I think that’s true of Doctor Who fans as well,” says Tennant. “If your mind is set in that way, then you have a generosity of spirit. And there’s quite an overlap between the two fandoms.”
They seem almost wistful until I bring up the airfield. Days after filming during a cold snap in Battersea Park, where we huddled like penguins around glowing heaters in tents, production moved to an airfield outside London where they had built a fake Soho to house Aziraphale’s bookshop. It was the place that changed everyone’s idea of what ‘cold’ actually meant, but it also became the ultimate green room of all time. Both of them look wide-eyed at the mention of the place, for both reasons.
“That blasted airfield! It was blasted in every sense of the word,” says Tennant. “But the great joy was you had all the cast together at once. Between takes we had this big trailer where they would blast the heaters and we’d go and recover.”
“We’d drink hot chocolate, tell stories, and watch TV,” beams Sheen, who says the thing he misses most about the UK is the fact that he can mention The Flumps and people actually know what that is.
“But the only TV channel that would work was some version of Turner Classic Movies,” says Tennant. “Ancient old movies on a loop. Michael McKean would just sit there telling us stories about people he knew or about some sort of terrible Hollywood lifestyle they’d once lived.”
Though it took months to get them both in the same room in the same city, it is a genuine treat to see Sheen and Tennant together. They seem to prop each other up, to fill the space where the other is not, in both acting and conversing. Neither steps on the other’s toes. Above all, they seem to have a deep respect for one another. “It genuinely made me sad when we stopped filming,” says Sheen. “I didn’t want to not be doing it any more.” Good Omens makes you wonder why nobody thought of putting them together sooner. It is the strangest buddy story so far, the one just before the end of the world, starring the most unlikely pals who for some reason quite like each other — mostly because they’ve just been posted here a bit too long by their superiors so they have more in common with each other than they do with Heaven or Hell — and, crucially, quite like us. It’s the kind of thing that makes you believe the world is worth saving.

Best Singles of 2018 but it’s chill this year
This category should speak for itself but I just tacked so many amendments onto the description that it’s like... it just makes no fucking sense anymore. Technically this is a list for any single that was released this year or last year December (since I write these lists in December it’s easier for songs to slip under my radar so I sometimes count them for the next year, like the Grammy’s eh? But then sometimes I let a November 30th release date slide as well... or maybe the single was released earlier but the video would qualify or just... any dumb fucking reason. If you see a song that shouldn’t qualify just trust me to find a loophole so... lezzgo.
Also hey, I guess I’ll just straight up say it then, there’s no best covers, best collaborations OR best pop songs list either, I just kinda threw them all on here. With a good portion of this list being kpop I’d have to make a whole different kpop list too? No sir, no thank you, I’ll just dump it all on here especially since the past few years most of the pop songs list was already featured on the singles list so like... why make the extra effort? Enjoy All Songs.
Also the order is just ugh, it’s 200 songs, get off my weenie.

ASMB 2017-18 Masterpost
I have no excuse.....
Below the cut is the full masterpost for the 2017-18 round of the Asexual Supernatural Mini Bang. Work includes Destiel, Sabriel, Wincest, Lucifer/Michael, ace!Cas, ace!Dean, ace!Sam, demi!Sam, demi!Dean, polyamorous relationships, canon-fic, AUs, and more!
Flesh is a Weapon Author: Cenedra Riva Artist: harplesscastiel Rating: Mature Pairing(s): Rowena & Dean (friendship) Warning(s): Dubious Consent, Sex repulsion, Sex used as a tool Word Count: 10802 Summary: Rowena had always sought power over her life. When she was young, she had learned that sex could be used to gain power, whether that was from lying with a wealthy man or using sexual energy to power curses. It was a useful tool, if a repugnant one, but she was willing to use it if the reward was worth it. Life was often harsh and difficult. Any little thing that could be used to gain the upper hand was worth it, even if it left her feeling sick. Links to fic and art: FIC and ART
Just As We Are Author: Hyrulehearts1123 Artist: Rating: Teen and up Pairing(s): Lucifer/Dean Winchester, Gabriel/Dean Winchester, Future Lucifer/Dean Winchester/Gabriel Warning(s): Comments that can be taken as acephobic, offscreen torture, torture aftermath Word Count: 10,000 Summary: The morning after Dean Winchester was rescued from Hell was one of the hardest mornings of his life. He hadn’t slept that night, choosing instead to hole up in an abandoned convenience store nearby and drink in an attempt to forget what had happened in the time spent in hell. And yet, as he looked back on it a year later, he couldn’t help but smile, before snuggling back into the nice, warm blankets. It had taken a lot of hard work, and quite a bit of blood to get to where he was now, but it had all been worth it in the end. Author Notes: This was an adventure to write. Not only was I trying a new style, but it’s my first time trying anything like this. I had a lot of fun though! Links to fic and art: Fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/14706335  Art:
The Guardian Author: Weasleychick32 Artist: Cenedrariva Rating: Mature Pairing(s): Dean/Cas, background Charlie/Dorothy Baum Warning(s): Graphic Depictions of Violence Word Count: 50k Summary: A dead judge. A witness. An infallible assassin.
Dean Winchester is a hunter-turned-U.S. Marshal. Basically, he gets paid to protect people from monsters, human or otherwise. He didn’t sign up for dealing with a snarky, blue-eyed pain in the ass with an apparent death wish, an assassin, or hard-headed little sisters. Well, technically he did sign up for that last one. They all did. Orphaned at Singer’s Home for Children Displaced by the Supernatural they adopted each other. Sam may be his only sibling, but as far as he’s concerned, he has five. For them-Sam, Charlie, Benny, Claire, and Jo-he needs to make it out of this alive.
Castiel Milton is a fallen angel in a world where the supernatural live in the open. As exciting as it sounds on paper, his life is a series of one monotonous moment after another; he writes speeches for big names with even bigger egos, has a cat that only sleeps in the sink no matter what he does to make her stop, and in his free time he looks for his sister who disappeared when he was a kid. When he witnesses the murder of a federal judge, his simple little life implodes. Nothing is as it once was and if he stops to catch his breath, he’s dead.

They Want Me To Make Them Oh Oh Oh Author: Lasafara Artist: Cenedra Riva Rating: Teen and up Pairing(s): Dean/Castiel Warning(s): John Winchester’s A+ Parenting, Incubus!Dean, ace!cas, consensual sex for the wrong reasons, Implied Past Abuse, Acephobia Word Count: 18102 Summary: When Gabriel’s misplaced concern for Cas’s sex life results in a demon summoning, Cas is frustrated beyond belief. His brother won’t accept his sexuality, and now he has an incubus in his house, unable to leave without a “boost.” But the incubus is kind, and funny, and Cas finds he doesn’t mind so much.
Dean has spent his entire life making sure his partners were happy with his performance. After all, that’s the only thing he’s good for, according to his dad. So when he’s summoned to someone who doesn’t want to get down and dirty, Dean doesn’t know how to handle it. He’s never been seen as more than a glorified sex toy; what is he supposed to do when he’s actually seen as a person?
The two have a lot to work out, and worse, something isn’t quite right with Dean. Can Dean and Cas figure out their differences before everything falls apart?

What I need Author: 50shadesofsubtext Artist: Impalartsociopath Rating: Gen Pairing(s): Castiel/Dean Winchester, Jessica Moore/Sam Winchester, Dorothy Baum/Charlie Bradbury Warning(s): None Word Count: 7788 Summary: Dean is a paramedic that works at the firehouse near the hospital. When the new nurse, Cas, is hired at the hospital, the paramedics, nurses, doctors, and other hospital staff try to win him over, but when he is uninterested in everyone, they come together to hook him up with Dean. Author Notes: A huge thank you to my artist @impalartsociopath for his AMAZING art!!! It is beautiful!!!
Also huge thank you to my alpha and beta readers, @saltnhalo, @lotrspnfangirl, and @so-many-lines!!! You all were amazing and any remaining issues are mine alone
The title comes from the Hayley Kiyoko song of the same name.
This was my first ever bang, and it was so much fun, thank you everyone!!! Links to fic and art: FIC ART
When the Mountains Crumble to the Sea Author: flightoftheseraph Artist: my_untold_lies Rating: Teen Pairing(s): Castiel/Dean Winchester, Mention of Dean/Other(s) Warning(s): N/A Word Count: 8918 Summary: Dean never realized that his apartment burning down would turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him. he accidentally finds exactly what he’s been looking for all along. (Ace!Dean and Trans Castiel. Fluff and Hurt/Comfort.)

Forty-one people died from police pursuits in California during 2020 – making it the deadliest year for chases involving law enforcement since 2006 when a state law meant to improve safety took effect.
In those 15 years through 2020, a Southern California News Group analysis of data from the California Highway Patrol shows, 476 people were killed:
281 drivers fleeing police
94 passengers in suspect vehicles
91 bystanders
10 police officers
Meanwhile, collisions occurred in about a quarter of the 109,941 pursuits, with more than 15,000 people suffering injuries.
And the number of deaths and injuries could be higher. The CHP’s data depends on police agencies submitting reports on their pursuits as required by state law, but the analysis shows that an undetermined number either weren’t properly sent in or compiled.
In 2002, Candy Priano’s 15-year-old daughter, Kristie, was killed when Chico police went after a teenager who stole her mom’s RAV-4, in part inspiring the safety law. Priano’s husband was driving Kristie to her high school basketball game when the fleeing teen struck their minivan.
Tumblr media
Five years later Candy Priano founded Pursuit Safety, a nonprofit that aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in law-enforcement chases.
“One is too many,” Candy Priano said. “Especially when you’re talking about nonviolent suspects, and when you’re chasing someone for only a property crime.
“When they see a car on the street,” she said of officers, “like a blue pickup, they shouldn’t see a blue pickup. They should see a father going to work. When they see a white minivan, they shouldn’t see a white minivan – they should see a mother taking her daughter to school.”
Priano said police aren’t at fault for pulling someone over, but the decision to chase after someone who drives off is what needs to be looked at: “And they tell you they watch for traffic and weather, but [deaths] still keep happening, so that strategy isn’t working.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Under department policies and statewide guidelines, officers are to be trained to know when to hit the sirens and lights and chase after drivers — and when to just let them go.
“There’s an interest from the public to catch and capture an individual that has committed a serious crime and that we do so responsibly,” said Long Beach Sgt. Paul Gallo, who is in the department’s training division. “Society will have an expectation that we don’t look the other way.”
Sometimes, the police are going after someone unlawfully carrying a weapon or a suspect in a homicide. More often officers are pursuing a motorist for a traffic violation such as speeding, an expired vehicle registration, or running a traffic light or a stop sign. Many suspects were driving a stolen vehicle.
“A lot of people say, ‘It’s a minor violation, why pursue them?’ ” said Amber Wright, a CHP officer and spokeswoman. “Sometimes it’s more than just no registration. We don’t know what this person is running from.”
Tumblr media
Hemet police investigate a crash that happened at the end of a pursuit on Nov. 28, 2020. One person was killed and two others — including the 15-year-old driver — were injured when the car rolled over on Devonshire Avenue near Lyon Street, police said. (Timothy Franzese, Public Safety Incidents)
Under California law, when considering a pursuit, an officer is to weigh the danger a suspect may pose to the public if allowed to get away versus the danger the pursuit presents. Factors can include the time of day, whether in a residential neighborhood or if a school is nearby, the number of pedestrians about, an officer’s familiarity with the area, and weather and road conditions.
That balance test is taken in seconds.
“There’s a lot of stuff going on while the situation is unfolding,” said Cpl. Danny Garcia of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, which runs a regional pursuit-training center. “That’s why pursuits are high-stress situations.”
When officers do pursue, the lights oftentimes flash and the sirens whine – they have entered “Code 3.”
“Accidents still happen, but we tell our officers Code 3 driving is our safest driving,” Anaheim Sgt. Shane Carringer said. “You really need to be in the game.”
Agencies’ policies guiding officers’ decisions on when to give chase vary.
Many police departments, including Anaheim’s and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, allow officers to use their discretion.
Long Beach police tell their officers to initiate pursuits when there is suspicion that the individual has committed a felony or is about to or is impaired. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department holds a similar standard.
The Los Angeles Police Department tells its officers to not pursue a driver for only a minor driving offense or if the motorist just didn’t pull over.
Elsewhere in the U.S., some cities hold even stricter standards. The Milwaukee and Dallas police departments instruct their officers to chase only when an individual has committed a violent felony or may be in the act of doing so.
The Atlanta Police Department famously suspended all vehicle pursuits at the start of 2020 after two tragedies, including one in which teens chased by officers for driving a stolen SUV struck and killed a man on his way to pick up medications at a pharmacy for his disabled son. By year’s end, though, Atlanta police resumed chases but only when someone is suspected of certain felonies, such as for murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping or manslaughter.

One May night in 2020 after 11 p.m., Jose Hernandez, 32, was out walking his dog in Long Beach. Police were after a Mercedes-Benz mini SUV with a suspect accused of stealing pot plants from a licensed dispensary.
Hernandez and his dog stepped into a crosswalk on Sixth Street at Magnolia Avenue and that SUV ran a red light and plowed into them at 90 mph, killing both, authorities said.
Police had already arrested three other suspects and, Long Beach police wrote in the traffic collision report, the intersection is known to have “high pedestrian activity.”

A year earlier, just several miles away, Jessica Bingaman, 41, died after a man driving a suspected stolen van, chased by Long Beach police, ran a stop sign and rammed into her car at 11:30 a.m., authorities said. The mother of an 11-year-old, she was a dog sitter, and five of the six dogs with her were also killed.
Bingaman’s mother, DonAnn Lawson, said police should not have been pursuing a suspect at high speeds in a residential area, and not for just a stolen vehicle. Lawson said an officer told her the suspect was speeding when he crashed into her daughter’s vehicle.
“Why did they have to pursue?” she said. “What did he do that was earth-shattering that they had to do this in a residential section?
“Did he kill somebody? No. Did he rape somebody? No. Did he kidnap a kid? That would be the one thing I feel they would have to chase someone,” she said. “But somebody was picked up on a theft charge. That’s my question: ‘Why?’”
In a claim filed against the city, Lawson’s attorney said Long Beach police knew who they were chasing and could have found him later. Lawson said an officer told her police knew the suspect’s identity.
In October 2019, Edward and Gracie Contreras picked up their 13-year-old son who had spent a night with friends at Knott’s Berry Farm. A Jeep driven by a man suspected of carjacking pursued by West Covina officers ran a red light and slammed into the family’s car at an intersection, police said. The parents were killed; the boy continues to recover from leg and arm injuries.

“Even now, we haven’t gotten over it, and we think about him all the time,” Anna Martinez said of the step-father, her brother. “It’s just a car. Why kill people? They are not the first ones to die, either. All these deaths, it could’ve been avoided.”
The accused carjacker, police said, had taken the Jeep at knifepoint in Baldwin Park.
Attorneys for the Contreras’ family, in a wrongful-death lawsuit, said the Jeep could have been found later: The owner had left her cell phone inside, which is how police tracked down the Jeep in the first place. Further, the suit says, police did not have their lights and sirens on.
In November, police spotted a car in Hemet suspected stolen out of Desert Hot Springs and attempted to pull it over. The driver sped away. During the chase lasting three-fourths of a mile, the suspect ran a red light and swerved to avoid another vehicle, sending the car toward a sidewalk where it rolled over, police said. The passenger was ejected and died. Two others, including the 15-year-old driver, suffered severe injuries.
Police departments involved in the deadly collisions declined to provide further details, some citing pending litigation.
Officers have died in pursuits, too. In 2017, CHP Officer Lucas Chellew was chasing a man suspected of riding a stolen motorcycle. He tried to avoid a vehicle that pulled out in front of him at a busy intersection but lost control, crashed and died.

Before becoming a spokesman for Anaheim police in 2019, Carringer worked as a patrol officer for 14 years and has been in at least 50 vehicle pursuits: “Anytime, if I’m speaking personally, I get into a pursuit, I’m very much aware of what’s happening is dangerous.”
There is always a risk for an officer to enter tunnel vision, Carringer said, when pressure catches up and the officer is unable to make sound decisions. “I don’t want an officer who is amped up on the pursuit,” he said.
In general, the supervisor overseeing the pursuit, whether from a police station while listening to the radio and watching the moving location via GPS, or from a patrol car following behind, can decide to replace the officer with another or to just end the chase.
The data shows most chases ended without a collision.
About 60% of the time, police took the suspect into custody. In the other pursuits, law enforcement called off the pursuit because there was another way to make the arrest, such as tracking down the suspect later, or police saw the risk as too great to continue, or the suspect slipped away or died in a collision or was injured and required hospitalization.
In October, following a short pursuit that ended with a crash, Long Beach police arrested a man suspected of a fatal shooting from several months before.
The same month LAPD officers chased down a man who had carjacked a car with an eight-month-old child and his grandmother in the vehicle. Police arrested the man after officers used a spike strip that brought the car to a halt during the slow-speed pursuit through downtown Los Angeles.

And earlier this month police in Pomona arrested a man who was a “subject of interest” in a Kern County homicide, and suspected of a carjacking and previously evading police, after he led officers on a chase from Murrieta, through the Jurupa Valley, into San Bernardino County, and finally ending with a collision with a parked big rig parked at a gas station. The suspect suffered a leg injury.
The pursuit-safety law, which took effect in 2006, made it more difficult for police departments to gain immunity in courtrooms to avoid big civil payouts. Instead of just requiring departments to only have pursuit policies to gain immunity, officers now must read and understand them, and departments must offer annual pursuit training.
Police pursuits, and the deaths from them, did decrease after passage of the law, but after several years started increasing again.
Why is unclear.
State Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, voted in favor of the pursuit-safety law while in the Assembly. He plans to bring up those increases in the Senate.
“Is it a function of increased population?” Umberg said. “Is it a function of different police tactics? Is it a function of folks deciding that they think they can be more successful in evading the law?”
In 2020, according to the CHP data, there were 9,861 pursuits across the state – an average of 27 a day.
