Saw the Barbie movie the other day and Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For" (click the song title to listen to it lol) hit so fuckin different good lord. Anyway, it's perfect for Steve angst with a dash of platonic Stobin and romantic Steddie fluff so ;)
---
Steve is five when he learns that he was made to keep his parents together. At least, that's why his mother made him.
He learns it one night when his father is staying late at the company (before his mother started accompanying him all the time, leaving an empty house and Steve behind; Steve can confidently say his presence did, in fact, fix their relationship: it gave them something to unite against). His mother is three large glasses of red wine in, draped inelegantly on the couch and slurring her words with a glassy film covering her eyes.
"Steven, you were supposed...supposed to make him stay," she says, her fourth glass of wine dangerously close to spilling across the white rug. "An-and he's still gone! What did we do wrong?"
Despite the use of "we," Steve knows very well (even at the age of five) that his mother means "What did you do wrong?" He doesn't have an answer for her--he never will--and that seems to be just one more thing she holds against him.
Steve is seven when he learns that he was made to keep the family name strong and respected. At least, that's why his father made him.
He learns it when his father brings him to work, his stern expression and tense shoulders telling Steve to behave himself, to be seen and not heard the entire day (he did, and it worked a little too well; after falling asleep on the couch, his father had forgotten him at work, leaving him to spend the night in the locked office). His father is sitting at his desk, expensive pen in hand and phone just hung up after a tense conversation that ended with the most genuine smile Steve has ever seen from him.
"Steven, I hope you've been paying attention today," he says, placing the pen on the desk and fixing him with a suffocating gaze. "You'll be working here one day, and I expect you to make something of yourself when you do. You're to be a model man, someone I can proudly introduce to others."
When his father says proudly, Steve knows he means that he can't do that now because Steve has yet to make something of himself. Steve nods once, says a firm but not too loud, "Yes, sir," and his father goes back to work.
Steve is sixteen when he learns Nancy made him her boyfriend for...for a distraction? Because it's what was expected of her? Because she was curious? At least, that's what Nancy seems to be saying.
Honestly, Steve isn't sure she knows, either. But she definitely knows that he wasn't what she wanted, that he wasn't what she expected, that he couldn't live up to the expectations she had made for him.
Either way, he learned it over the course of their relationship, but it all hit him at the very end, when fights and names (idiot, asshole, and dick, to list a few) compounded into a breakup that left him aching, angry, empty, hurt, and desperate to know what he did wrong.
Maybe then he'd be able to save himself from making the same mistake over and over. Because it must be him, right? It must be something he's doing; if only he could figure out what that is.
Steve is seventeen when he learns that maybe he was made to be a shield. At least, that's how he understands the plan Dustin comes up with wherein he calls Steve their tank.
He learns it when they're huddled together at some point, readying to face demodogs and whatever else the Upside Down has decided to throw at them. Dustin is explaining the plan, his eyes bright as he throws around terms Steve can't recognize. "And Steve is going to be our tank," he says.
"What's a tank?" Steve asks, at least certain they don't mean the military kind of tank.
"Like a meatshield, duh," Mike tells him, the explanation short and quick and then disregarded in favor of the rest of the plan.
Maybe Steve should have felt hurt, but part of him is more excited by the fact that he could do well as a tank, a meatshield. He could, in fact, be made for that role. He's great at taking a punch, great at jumping back to his feet, great at putting himself between the kids and whatever wants to kill them.
The only way he could possibly fail at being a shield is by dying, and he doesn't plan to die just yet.
Steve is eighteen when he wonders if maybe he's made to love. At least, that's a realization he has after befriending Robin, getting tortured together, and learning he doesn't need romance to love someone. It's a realization he throws himself into wholeheartedly one day when he looks at Robin and sees her trying to drink a slushie with a Twizzler.
"I think I love you," he blurts out, unable to hold the words in and feeling bad for it when Robin subsequently chokes on Twizzler and Cherry slush.
She spits out the slushie, tosses her Twizzler into the cup, and spins around to look at Steve. "We've definitely talked about this, dingus," she says, narrowing her eyes in suspicion. "You got amnesia or something?"
Steve rolls his eyes and pushes her. "Not like that. I mean, like, a friend. I love you, Robin. You mean a lot to me, and I hope we're still friends when we're 80 so we can make fun of other people in our nursing home."
Robin breaks out into a grin that she quickly suppresses. "Ugh, affection," she sneers, turning her nose up. It lasts all of three seconds before she glances at Steve from the corner of her eye and adds, "I love you, too, dingus."
Steve is nineteen when he decides that he's made for love, to give and receive and bask in its warmth. At least, that's what he decides when he's with Eddie, sprawled across his bed and listening to the mixtape he made for Steve.
They've been dancing around each other for a while up to that point: obnoxiously obvious flirtations, finding any excuse to brush against each other or share space or lean together, creating reasons to hang out with some as simple as "I'm just bored." Steve has been enjoying it; they both seem to understand what's inevitable, and they're just taking their time getting there.
And right now, listening to Eddie sing along to Metallica, Steve thinks that he wants to stop dancing around each other and dance together, instead. So, he turns onto his side, places a hand on Eddie's arm, waits until Eddie is looking at him with a bright smile and curious eyes, and says, "I was made for loving you."
Instead of the joy Steve was expecting, Eddie just looks confused. "How'd you know that was the next song?" he asks.
"What?"
"On the mix tape. I Was Made for Loving You by KISS. That's the next song," Eddie explains.
Steve blinks and frowns. He sits up, throws a leg over Eddie's hips, and settles on top of him. Eddie doesn't look surprised, since it's not the first time Steve has done this. Usually, it just means Steve wants him to pay close attention. "I didn't know it was the next song, Eds."
It takes a few moments for Eddie to fully understand what he means. And Steve gets a front-row seat to the confusion that morphs into understanding that morphs into amazement. "Oh," Eddie breathes, pushing himself up to rest on his elbows. "Could you say it again? I don't think I heard you the first time, Stevie."
Steve snorts but humors Eddie anyway. "I was made for loving you," he says, softer this time and leaning closer.
"Yeah, much clearer that time." Eddie's grin is wide and blinding before he closes the distance between them. "I was made for loving you, too, sweetheart," he whispers back, his words pressed against Steve's lips and searing into his heart.

Seeing someone's awful, self-righteous, bad faith, rage bait take and realising that you already have them blocked for their other dogshit opinions 👌👌👌
#barbie Ken voice: SUBLIME.#You know when someone identifies themselves as a queer poc and like leverages it in a way that is so cognitively dissonant and embarrassing?#like bro you're giving us hot qpocs a bad name youre scaring the hoes 💀💀💀 stoppppp 💀💀💀#You can't leverage your status as a poc over another poc#especially when you are specifically talking about Thai culture and the person you're bitching about is literally half thai#especially when all perth said was I had friends that would watch every BL religiously and now there's so much coming out that they can't#so ''I think the BL industry is becoming oversaturated because the target audience can no longer physically keep up with the output''#is a perfectly reasonable thing to say???#especially as someone that is looking for roles in said industry? like they don't want to be in an unwatched unprofitable show?#he is a professional BL actor he has worked on two of the most profitable BL's that have come out of Thailand in the last like 2 years#being like ''his professional opinion doesn't matter because he's straight''#and ''I clearly have more experience with the BL industry because I consume the finished product'' is. ??? questionable???? at best???#speaking as a queer person of colour who has 2 years experience in the TV industry: oversaturation is a word that is really commonly used#it is a real worry for people that are working in a genre and it's a way to say like what is going to be innovative and popular#and how can I get on that wagon#because it's a career you're not just looking at the output at the end (the show) you are looking at the entire process from start to finish#That's literally all Perth was doing???#sorry it upset your sensibilities as a BL consumer but he was talking from the perspective of a BL professional#anyway what the fuck ever lmao

why do ppl keep comparing kens part w portrayal of women in men centered media? like huh? women in men centered media are flat one dimensional lamps that exist so that the heros story can progress. ken has a story arc ken has his own agenda. ken has complexity. greta would nt do ken as dirty as male directors would a supporting female character. she understands. she is superior to them. stop this comparison

Ken's progression OUT of color
This is kinda a cornplate thought that I had nowhere else to put but I love how in the Barbie movie(SPOILERS), Ryan Gosling's Ken's outfits symbolically showcase his "descent" into full patriarchy mode over time.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the film Ken's beach outfit (his default) has an equal balance of pink and blue. Pink is obviously Barbie's color, and shows Ken as fitting well into the femininity and style of Barbieland, while blue could be argued to be Ken's color (a scene later when he's especially confident features him wearing all denim blue, and the stereotypical gender of these colors, especially when found in kid's toys, supports these basic binaries as associated with these colors).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Ken decides to leave Barbieland with Barbie to delve into the outside world, his color scheme goes full pink, desperate enough to be with Barbie that his attire reflects how dependent his identity is on hers at this stage.
Tumblr media
However, it isn't long before Ken's exploration of the real world leads him to exciting new discoveries about the patriarchy and what it can do for him. Here he is introduced to a newfound sense of self independent from barbie, and while he still carries a pink scarf around his neck, the rest of his outfit has devolved into black and white while hers has remained colorful. As he pursues this new-to-him idea further, his worldview is becoming less unique, pretty, and vibrant(in addition to becoming much more masculine).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is only his scarf that ties him to Barbie now, and upon making the choice not to follow her to Mattel, he becomes fully independent, losing the scarf and any trace of pink in his attire the next time we see him in his mojo dojo casa house coat and beach off outfit underneath.
In his most masculine moment during "Just Ken", he and the other Kens all wear a uniform of the most traditionally male ben shapiro outfit ever: A T-Shirt, belt, and dress pants. All black(and no white either to contrast like the previous 2 outfits). It's fitting that the Kens, in their destructive warpath, imagine themselves as perfectly cleaned up yet violently masculine dancers in their heads, their outfits devoid of all of the flair and character of Barbieland.
Tumblr media
(excuse the shitty picture) After Ken has his little self-growth moment, his new sweatshirt reflects the changed and much more balanced man he has become, much more accepting of himself and a life where he can co-exist with Barbie without being with her. This outfit is again an almost perfect balance of pink and blue, both sides of Ken now a bit more at peace, his colors not pushed out by the LITERALLY black hole of toxic masculinity.
The color scheme also matches the roller blading outfit, so perhaps it shows a somewhat intermediary stage of Ken's development wherein he is still attached to and at peace with Barbieland, but where he is starting to become more independent as well. anyway these are all fun and i genuinely have no fucking idea why Mattel didn't cash in on literally making dolls of all the characters and their outfits these would be so fun to own

Queer Experience Watching Barbie - AFAB Masculinity
I started to go into this in tags on another post but I wanted to type this up separately and try to develop my thoughts a little more. . .
Ryan!Ken’s arc in Barbie (2023) has been buzzing in my head for days.
I got fixated on it for a couple of major reasons:
1) We rarely have seen a feminist movie take time to address men with compassion in how patriarchy harms them too.
2) As a trans masc person, I think it hits a specific part of my identity that I don’t consciously let myself think about for too long. Something about being raised in a female world with sisterhood and community. Then being isolated in adult manhood without the tools to prepare you for that. Conscientious of respecting women and being unbothered by feminimity around you, but not knowing your place in the world.
How do I put it?
I know it’s not the direct intention of the film itself, but I’ve seen other trans folks (especially transmasc), reacting similarly to the feeling we get from it.
Ken’s arc feels pretty reminicent of the struggle afab lgbt folks go through when considering masculinity in their identity (butch lesbians, afab nbs, trans men, etc.)
How to make peace with masculine aspects of yourself without losing the women in your life? (One can argue Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie has aspects of this as well.)
Of course, then Ken goes off on the adopting patriarchy ride, which IS the point of the movie, and may skew a bit from the transmasc read on it--though I have known a trans guy here and there who avoids being misgendered so hard that they can become somewhat sexist. To which I say: “You don’t need to have a dick to be a man, and you don’t need to BE a dick to be a man.” But I digress.
Something about Ken being comfortable in a woman’s world but not understanding why he’s being shut out from socially bonding with them (in any sense! Romantic, Familial, Platonic Friendship. . .)
The overall theme of the movie for both Barbie and Ken--in an allegory of heavy gender roles harming all--leading them each to have to figure out who they are in themselves, regardless of others. . .
Trans masc folx can relate to both Barbie and Ken’s arcs.
I don’t want to detract from Barbie’s arc being the main point of the movie.
I think the reason why we get hung up on Ryan!Ken’s character is because. . . we’ve related to the Barbie plot in other movies and shows before, thinking back to our “girlhoods” as children.
I have never seen the arc Ken has in this in any other story!!!!
There are some Man Movies that have attempted to discuss the struggle of Being a Man--but they often come off as too dismissive of feminine experiences, and are therefore as offputting to transmasc people as women.
Because of the nature of the two worlds exhibited in this movie, and Ken’s backround in his setting, personality, and purpose in relation to the Barbies, he’s a Man living with Female Socialization, in a Woman’s World; he’s a male character that inherently admires and respects women in his nature (until the real world influence distorts it).
This isn’t a perfect example of a transmasc experience either, but it’s a lot closer than most of us generally get to see! That’s why so many of us are getting caught up in this.
Please, other trans folx (transfems, too!), I really need us to have a discussion about this. What were your experiences and thoughts around this movie?
P.S. Yeah, we kinda get that nonbinary allegory from Allan (not a Ken, not a Barbie, siding with Feminism in the Gender War), but he wasn’t in significant focus of the plot the way Ryan!Ken was. If I try to read into Allan, I don’t have much to work with.

BARBIE AND KEN
summary: you force rafe to dress up as ken to match you for the new barbie movie— and he starts feeling himself way too much.
warnings: cursing , a little cringe ( but i can’t resist soft!rafe x reader idc how fanon anyone thinks it is. this is the character development rafe we need in the next season. )
— no ‘barbie!’ movie spoiler!
Tumblr media
Wearing his old clothes made him feel different. He had ditched the polo shirts for just plain tees. His hair was buzzed , no longer able to be gelled back in a way that made him spend alot longer looking in the mirror than he’d ever admit.
At first when you told him your idea , asking him if he’d do it with you , he was completely against it. He didn’t have a problem taking you to the movie— but he didn’t know how he felt about dressing up for it.
But the look on your face was too hard to let down and eventually , he cracked. A smile tugging on his lips while he rolled his eyes at you , shaking his head when you clapped happily and pulled out the bag of clothes you had bought for yourself.
“Remember that peach polo you’d always wear?” Your heart glimmered that piece of Rafe’s life. Even if he hadn’t been the most liked , and he seemed like a real big asshole— it was the start of everything and it always held such a big place in your heart. Knowing the boy him , before watching him become the man he was now was touching to you. Especially when you thought about him and how he’d watch you do the same. “I got you the same kind just a different color so it’ll match the dress I bought!”
Your smile took up half your face as you laid it on the bed beside you. Rafe’s face scrunched up at the color , rubbing his temples. “Oh fuck me.”
You rolled your eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic. The Rafe I knew two years ago would’ve ate this up and you know it!” Pointing an accusing finger in his direction , you burst into a fit of giggles. “Oh! Your perfect little hairstyle too. It’s time like these when I miss that asshole–esq haircut.” You sighed sadly.
Rafe scoffed as he picked up the shirt to examine it closer. “Please , you loved that haircut.”
“I did.” You giggled and stood up. You wrapped your arms around his neck to catch his attention , flushing at his eyes on you. “We’re gonna be so cute! You’re so Ken , Rafey.” You gushed. There were many things you loved and adored about Rafe , but your favorite was when he’d do whatever you asked— no matter how silly other people would think it was.
Rafe smirked and threw the shirt back on the bed lazily to hold your hips. “I am , aren’t I?”
“You so are.” You agreed , kissing at the apple of his cheeks. “You’re like. . . Polo Ken.”
“Okay I don’t dress like that anymore!” Rafe defended himself with a groan.
Your brain flashed back all the memories you had of him , the earliest ones making your heart flutter at how sweet and innocent things were. It all started with a teenage girl with the biggest crush on the King of Kooks— adorning him from afar until he finally cracked first. The relationship wasn’t always perfect and it had its bumpy moments , but the outcome would always make it worth it. Absentmindedly , your hands trailed up to the back of Rafe’s neck. Your fingers fiddled with his hair , feeling the edges of his buzzcut. You remembered when you’d run your fingers through it after his shower and all the gel would be gone. The loose strands of hair making him boyish and sweet , stripped of that ego and left with just him. “Remember those backwards hats?”
Rafe let out an exasperated noise and dropped his head low at your teasing. “Must you torture me with reminding me of my horrible fashion taste?”
“Mine wasn’t any better.” You laughed at yourself , remembering what you used to wear.
“Well back then , you weren’t wearing alot of clothes around me.” Rafe smirked , wiggling his eyebrows at you suggestively.
Your cheeks burned up as you slapped his chest , backing away. “Anyways—” you huffed whilst he chuckled. “The movie’s in like two hours so I’m going to shower and get ready.”
“Perfect! Me too.” He grinned. Though his smile dropped as you grabbed your things and walked towards the bathroom without him.
“Not in the mood to be peed on today.” You sang towards him and shut the door.
Tumblr media
You smiled at yourself in the mirror , smoothing down your hot pink dress. You had done all the works. The hair and makeup with the dress and wedges. You wanted to feel like a real Barbie , and right now— you did. Your smile couldn’t be any bigger and the girlish excitement you felt rumbling in your belly made your skin dance.
“Rafe! You ready?” You yelled out to him. You had decided in the shower that you wanted it to be a surprise. This would be something nostalgic for you , fun. You couldn’t wait to take all the pictures to store in your camera and keep as a sweet keepsake.
It was something you and Rafe were doing all on your own. It wasn’t Midsummers , or a special costume party. It was just a cute memory to make with your boyfriend , and it comforted you. You felt all the emotions in your belly. Your heart was racing and your cheeks were all flushed and you felt like a little girl again , meeting her crush on the first day of school. . . Even if it did feel a bit silly , it was nice.
“Yeah , baby. I’m ready , alright.” Rafe called back to you. He too couldn’t keep his eyes off the mirror. He looked like him , but not the him he was used to anymore. The attire holding onto so many feelings and memories. Some were good , and some weren’t so good. But it didn’t take away the small , innocent grin threatening to reveal itself on his face.
You threw the door open and was immediately filled with glee. Your eyes lit up at the sight of him , looking like the teenage boy you fell in love with. The two of you were only just entering your twenties— but seventeen felt like a lifetime ago now.
You clapped happily at him. Rafe couldn’t help the blush on his face at the feeling of your adornment. And you had looked— so pretty. It wasn’t just the outfit , but how you glowed wearing it. Your shoulders were squared and your face was so bright and Rafe swore he hadn’t seen anyone more beautiful. “Polo Ken is now my new favorite.”
Rafe smiled down at you. His thumb brushed your hair away from your face , and he couldn’t resist the urge to lean down and press a kiss to your lips softly. The lipstick the last thing on either of your minds. “You look so , so pretty.” He assured you.
“We are real life Barbie and Ken.” You hummed. “I don’t make the rules.”
And you were. Rafe had loved you then , and he only loved you twice as much if that was possible. Sometimes , he felt as though his heart would grow out of his body for you.
It was just you and him in your own little dreamland for now.
And you’d onto that , for now , as long as you could.

Yandere!Ken showing off to Barbie!Reader and letting his guard down only to end up being embarrassed (for something that happened, maybe when Barbie! reader tried to outsmart him) and becoming extra dark and possessive after that!!!
My first Barbie Movie REQUEST!!! [I went a little off track ngl]
Red Faced Loser
Yandere! Ryan! Ken x Fem! Reader Tw: Possessive/Obsessive Ken & Slight Misogyny !!YANDERE THEMES! READ AT OWN RISK!!
Tumblr media
Honestly, Ken was always embarrassing himself, but he never felt embarrassed because you never made him feel like that. He could fall on his face or hurt himself or say something stupid and you wouldn't make a fool out of him. Though this time was different.
"Well, women shouldn't be in positions on power-"
"Excuse me?" You turned towards Ken, confused. "Where did that come from."
"Well in the real world-"
"This isn't the real world, it's Barbieland."
"Yeah, about that, um, we're actually changing the name."
"What do you mean? Who's we?"
The other Kens were starting to watch you both argue. Ken could feel his cheeks redden as they watched and you poked his insecurities and inferiority. He didn't want the other Kens to think he was weak.
"Can we not do this here?"
"Do what? We're just talking. Can I not talk now Ken?"
"That's not what I said, but you'd be a lot hotter if you'd shut up."
Your eyes widen and you could feel your face heat up as the anger rose in you, "Who are you talking to?"
He bops your nose as he says, "You." He chuckles at his joke, not taking you seriously.
"I don't know what happened to you when you went to the real world, but I don't like this you."
He frowns, annoyed at your words, "I've changed for the better, Baby. You should get used to it."
"How could you do this Ken? I thought you loved Barbieland. I thought you loved me."
He caresses your face, "I do love you. But you should realize your place is below me, not above me."
"I hate you," You spit in his face, causing some gasps from the other Kens.
"You're just saying that to hurt me."
"You wish." He grabs your hand and pulls you away from the audience. He pushes you into a room and locks it behind you both, What the hell is wrong with you? Have you lost your mind?"
"Are you serious? You're the one who's lost your mind!"
"I haven't lost my mind. I've been enlightened."
"Enlightened?" You laugh, "Yeah right."
He tilts his head, frowning, "You'll see Y/n. Besides there's no escape, even if you did want it."
"What are you saying?"
"You can say you hate me all you want, but that doesn't mean anything, because I know you don't mean it. You still love me," He then bends down to your level, "And even if you don't, you will."

Invisible String.
pairing: older brother's best friend!frank castle x reader
summary: all along there was some invisible string tying you to frank castle.
warnings: none, just lots of sweetness!!!
word count: 1267 words
author’s note: this version of frank is so ken from barbie where it's like "ken's day was good as long as barbie looked at him" and i love it, listen to invisible string by taylor swift to get the full experience.
Tumblr media
Were there clues I didn’t see?
Frank’s eyes scanned your face, watching the way your nose scrunched when you laughed so hard it was silent and water was streaming down your face and the campfire in front of you warmed your face. He’d spent every single day since the two of you had met admiring you, watching your heart get broken from every guy you brought home, being the shoulder you could count on when all of your friends inevitability flaked out.  He could count all the times he tried to express his feelings on one hand, backing out at the last moment each and every time.
“What are you staring at? Weirdo.” You teased, scrunching your nose in the very way he found irresistible, making a face at him and turning back to the rest of your friend group.
You loved Frank, more than any friend should love their best friend. You’d lost count of how many nights you’d spent crying to your mom over the phone, wondering why he just didn’t like you back and asking what you did to deserve this torture from the universe.
“Nothing.” He smiled back, catching the eye of your friend across the fire, taking a sip of the beer in his hand. He never tried to hide his affection for you, never tried to make it a secret to anyone but you, he was fully aware that everyone around the two of you was most likely aware of the crush he had on you.
Were there clues I didn’t see?
Frank was your, slightly, older brother’s best friend. He’d been around for as long as you could remember, in almost every photograph there was of you or your brother since your mom started printing photos out. But he never had that older brother feel that a lot of your brother’s friends had, it wasn’t that he was unreliable or careless. He was the opposite. He cared more than any of your brother’s friends normally did. Sure, they’d come to your rescue if a boy hurt you or if you needed a ride somewhere or if you just needed a pick me up.
Frank was different. He cared. If the boys were going out to dinner he almost always picked up something for you on the way back, the only times he didn’t was in respect for the girl he was seeing at the time. He’d slip a twenty in the pocket of the jacket you always wore if he knew you needed some extra money, or if he knew you needed cheering up. Even if he didn’t have a job he always did it, and he never regretted it. To him, what he thought was, unrequited love wasn’t an issue. He’d cross every ocean and move every mountain and act like it was the easiest thing to do, all just to get a hint of a smile aimed towards him.
Frank was only two years older than you, well technically two years and one day, and he’d never let you forget it. He’d tell you to respect your elders and you’d shoot back that he was definitely an elder and that you could see the gray hairs coming in. The day you were born your mom told his that you two were destined for each other, she swore she could tell just by the way the two year old held your fraile, hours old body. His mom would tell you on every birthday you were just one more year closer to becoming a Castle girl, telling you how you’d make the prettiest one too. You always rolled your eyes and thanked her for whatever she had gotten you that year.
Were there clues I didn’t see?
“Your mom keeps lecturing me on how to treat women, she acts like I’m whoring myself out like your brother is.” He rolled his eyes, washing the dishes in the sink. None of which were his, considering he was in your house at midnight doing the chores you’d been putting off for awhile.
“She just cares, Frankie.” You mumbled back, legs swinging as they hung off the counter next to the sink, watching him scrub at the residue left on a pan you should’ve definitely cleaned the same day you used it.
You’d graduated college a few months ago, gotten the job of your dreams and yet felt so unfulfilled. You knew why. He was standing in your kitchen complaining about your mom, dish towel swung over his shoulder and shaggy hair pulled back by a headband you demanded he put on before he got stuff in his hair. Ever since you’d moved to this apartment he’d been over pretty much everyday, it felt odd without his presence in the house, it felt lonely without him.
“I tell her every time, I only want one woman.” He responded, catching your eye as he took the towel off his shoulder to dry the dish he just washed.
“So tell the girl, there’s no use telling me about it if you haven’t told her.” Your heart felt heavy, no matter how many times he’d tried to hint at you that he was in love with you it just never clicked, it might as well had come out of your ass and slid across the floor with a giant sign proclaiming your love for him.
“It’s you.”
Isn’t it just so pretty to think…
“Mom it’s just an anniversary, there really isn’t a need to bring the whole family here. It’s just dinner.” You explained, not knowing she knew more than you.
The ring was in his pocket, lighting it on fire, burning a hole right through the fabric. Frank’s mind couldn’t comprehend that this was happening, it was really happening, after years of pining after you he was going to propose.
All along there was some…
The day had finally come, you’d worked your ass off to get everything perfect and exactly the way you wanted it to be. Teenage you couldn’t believe you were standing here, actually about to become a Castle girl. You weren’t sure how both moms knew it was destined to be but you were glad they did, there wasn’t anyone else in the entire world you’d rather be doing this with.
“I can still remember the first time your mom told me I was destined to be a Castle girl, I had rolled my eyes and scoffed like that was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard. Why on earth would I want to marry my brother’s best friend? That seemed like torture. As the years went by it became something I couldn’t help but dream about, wondering how our relationship would come to be and if you had the intricate proposal I wanted down to the finest details. Every time you brought a girlfriend around, I hated you. Not really, but as much as a teenager full of angst and the world's largest crush on her brother’s best friend could muster. Then you matured, stopped bringing girls around and paid more attention to me. But you never made a move, I thought I was destined to be the little sister forever. But then, that one night in my kitchen you were complaining about how my mom kept lecturing you about how to treat women and you confessed your feelings. Stopped washing my dishes and gave me a kiss, it was surreal. Comparable to the ending of a coming-of-age movie. You’ve been around my whole life, Frankie, and all along there was some invisible string tying you to me.”

I've watched the Barbie trailer a few times now and i noticed that there is medical equipment behind Barbie and Ken when barbie invites him to the party. And ken is wearing a hospital gown. (see pics below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knowing what we know of Barbie land though, the only capable people there are all the Barbies, so the doctors are also Barbies. (in other words: they're women)
So what I'm getting at is, why does Ken not acknowledge the doctor at the end of the trailer as a doctor??
Tumblr media
the conversation is :
"..."
"But I'm a man."
"But not a doctor"
"Can I talk to a doctor?"
"You are talking to a doctor."
"..."
"There he is! Doctor!"
So what I understand from this is that Ken only sees men as capable of becoming a doctor, but how can that be when the posters showed that Barbies are everything and Kens are just,-- well, kens.
Edit: rewatched the trailer again and started thinking about Ken holding three thick books when talking to the doctor. What if they're about biology and he's starting to take an interest in it ever since coming to the real world? Like he actually wants to be a doctor and that's why he wants do an appendectomy? Not just as a joke or for fun and games.
So while Barbie has her journey of self discovery, going to the real world is also helping Ken out to find out more about himself.
I'm sure that Ken won't simply be a flat character in this movie and I'm as excited about his arc as I am about Barbie's.

i love your ken ficsss he's so- !!! could you maybe write something about a grumpy × sunshine trope with ken?
i feel ken would be so perfect for the grumpy × sunshine trope.... he would be so supportive and cheerful and grumpy!reader couldn't help but be happy around him but only with him!!
Grumpy x Sunshine Ken hc’s
Tumblr media
a/n: thank you! and oh my GOD yes yes yes and just YES. as someone who is in a grumpy x sunshine relationship- just yes. this is one of my FAV tropes :) Ken fits it perfectly.
✮⋆˙ To start off, you hated Ken when you first met him.
✮⋆˙ He was loud, annoying, and way too energetic for your taste.
✮⋆˙ Ken took a liking to you the moment you arrived in Barbie Land.
✮⋆˙ He made it his goal to get you to notice and possibly even like him back. So much, that every waking moment was spent trying to impress you.
✮⋆˙ He loved that you played hard to get. (At least he hoped that’s what you were doing rather than genuinely hating him) …
✮⋆˙ “Hey… Check this out” a smirk plastered on his face as he attempted to skate backwards.
✮⋆˙ He fell. Hard. (Just like he was for you)
✮⋆˙ Your first conversation was sparked when he found you at the Park with some other Barbies.
✮⋆˙ He tried walking past you casually, but when you glanced his direction, he froze and turned to you and your friends. Goofy smile and all.
✮⋆˙ “Hey” he said, standing widely with his arms down to either side.
✮⋆˙ You rolled your eyes. “What Ken?”
✮⋆˙ His eyes widened at his own name. “You… know my name?” He said with enthusiasm.
✮⋆˙ One of your friends giggled and you tried holding back your own laugh. “You’re Ken, and so is he” you say, pointing to one of the random Ken’s across the way.
✮⋆˙ Ken followed your finger and scoffed, brows furrowing in frustration. “Well- i’m Ken Ken” He pleaded.
⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ── ─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ── ─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆
✮⋆˙ The first time you smiled at Ken, he melted. Tears were involved, he hid them poorly of course.
✮⋆˙ You glanced around the two of you before reaching up to tussle his perfectly combed hair. “Oh, suck it up” you said, attempting to maintain your straight face.
✮⋆˙ It was hard not to smile at him.
✮⋆˙ He brings you gifts all the time
✮⋆˙ When another Ken is attempting to flirt with you, Ken gets extremely jealous. He will pout. A lot.
✮⋆˙ After you warm up to him, he quickly becomes the only person you have any energy for.
✮⋆˙ Other Kens no longer interest you.
✮⋆˙ He 100% continues to try and win you over even when he already has.
✮⋆˙ You are shorter than him, so this gives him the advantage. He often picks you up and randomly spins with a happy laugh.
✮⋆˙ Your nickname from him is ‘babygirl’ or ‘sweet boy’ or ‘sweetie’
✮⋆˙ He comes to all of your events/parties and supports you.
✮⋆˙ He loves being needed. If you need something reached or anything done he is ON it.
✮⋆˙ you are 100% a golden retriever black cat duo.
✮⋆˙ He is very emotional and will cry at everything while you tend to hold your feelings back until you can’t any longer.
✮⋆˙ He went from someone you ignored to someone you adore and show your soft side for.
Let me know if you’d like more Ken 🩷

Plastic heart - (4)
<<<Prev Next>>>
---
The OG Barbie movie made me believe in magic.
---
“Give me the rollerblades.”, you stomped up the stairs to only notice then, that weird Barbie was headed out.
“I would but we’re all gathering for the sending away party are we not?”, she asked you but in the state that you were in, you were sure your plastic heart was melting. Atleast that was what you hoped your body could do, so it could shed this uneasy feeling. To become a rain cloud so you could pour it all out.
“Who are we sending away?”, you asked feeling out of touch with everything going on.
“Stereo. She’s having a crisis.”, you heard the answer and began to zone out. So that was what she meant before. If she was leaving, then you possibly had a chance now, a thought gripped you.
But the anger that Ken displayed flashed in front of your eyes again. As much as you loved him, he didn’t.
“Tell me where they are and I’ll get it myself.”, you brushed past her. Your only need right now was to forget.
“In the trunk. Don’t forget to read the instructions.”, she bid you farewell as she went on her way while you trudged ahead to find your cure.
The house was dark and eerie. No one could explain why dark clouds swirled around this particular house or maybe it was an aesthetical add on. There was only one trunk, placed in the center with ominous lighting over it. The fear was beginning to take root.
Why would you need instructions for rollerblades?
As you popped open the lid, it let out a hiss and smoke began to bellow from within it. As you seated away the grey wisps, you caught sight of a shimmering pink rollerblade set that looked brand new.
You reached for it and picked it up, the metal rim gleaming almost as if you heard voices telling you to put it on.
In it’s place was a small post it note with something written on it.
In bold font, it was labeled as ‘instructions’
Go to the tunnel of dreams and use the rollerblades to venture further in.
At the heart of the tunnel, you will be shown your deepest desire that could fix your broken heart.
If you chose to accept it, a path will open that will take you to it.
That seemed much more simpler than the box of chocolates. You began to wonder why she didn’t give this to you in the first place.
So you took the skates, the instructions and exited weird Barbie’s house, the cold air was making your smooth skin shiver.
Malfunctioning was the worst experience, so much so that you had had enough of it. You just wanted to go back to your routine, forget Ken and start making cakes again.
‘The tunnel of dreams’, a vintage poster that looked faded was stuck on to the side of a big gapping hole that you were sure was the just the main sewer tunnel. Except it looked it wasn’t in use.
You looked back at Barbie land, you could hear faint cheers and fireworks, no one was going to notice you had gone. You inhaled deeply and then put on the blades. There was nothing here that could make you stay and if you truly were to get your heart’s desire by doing this. Then there was no better bargain.
The wheels glided smoothly against the plastic floor of the pipe, the dark enveloping you until you could see a small light at the end, which began to glow brighter as you approached it.
The buzzing white light was actually coming from a small vintage TV, it’s screen flickering with different ads of different barbies. As you came to a halt in front of it, the screen flickered and it played an advertisement about you.
"Great potential combined with impeccable skill to make the most profound dishes from all around the world. This Barbie has it all, the house, the intellect, the resilience to survive in the most cruel places, *with a drumroll* ‘the chefs kitchen’."
"But not everyone can have everything. This Barbie however does not have a Ken accessory and the one Ken she loves never truly sees her for who she is. "
"So go follow your dreams and establish your careers by adding her to your collection!"
*Each item sold separately
Now that didn’t make anything better. The screen glitched to have a noisy black screen as you stood there taking in the information. But from the darkness came a voice, starting soft as a whisper to soon becoming a commanding echo.
“Is that what you dream of?”
“Is that who you are?”
“What do you long for?”
"Speak it out at once."
The silence had vanished and as the voices echoed, the TV came alive playing pictures of your life here.
What did you long for?
You didn’t know anymore.
Say it
What did you want?
Say it
You covered your ears and began to crumble as the space around you became overwhelming.
The noise, the swirling wind, the jarring lights from the TV that began to flick images from your mind, all of them full of Ken and a few from the bakery. As the foundation of your life began to shake, it cracked all the unnecessary thoughts until there was only one that echoed along with the voices outside.
You wanted to feel like yourself again.
To wake up and wear your outfit and smile like this was who you had always wanted to be.
So you said it softly, first. Unsure.
“I want to be me.”
But it was lost in all the chaos around you, so you began to yell.
“I want to be me.”
“I want to feel like me again.”, you didn’t know you had that in you, a commanding presence to change this storm. And as you peeled away your hands to stand up straight because now you knew your demand. Your true desire.
If you didn’t value who you were? Deriving satisfaction or attention to fill that void from an outside source was never going to prove to be useful.
So as you said it, without a trace of doubt, without Ken’s face appearing in your mind, there was a new conviction.
You were going to put yourself first.
And with that everything stopped instantly. The chaos died and with it your skates began to glow. A bright pink that filled you with a warmth that felt good.
As you began to feel like everything was finally piecing itself together, it only began to fall apart. There was a tear in the dark floor that made it look like you were tearing out of your barbie box. The tear grew and grew until it swallowed you, causing you to fall through.
A choir began to sing around you, as you felt the grip on gravity on your legs.
Never let them know where you are from
Never go in search of your Barbie form
Keep this and you can return when you wish
But beware the tempt of reality, for it will change you
The more you crave to be real, the more it will sever your ties to your world.
All it takes is a wish to come back
If you choose to come back
All it takes is a wish to come back
Will you choose to come back?
With that, as the voices faded, you felt solid ground beneath your feet and immediately, a jarring sound of car horn.
“Oy get off the road!”, a man shouted  from with a yellow car that had taxi written on top of it.
As your eyes began to adjust to this unknown world, buildings stretching up all the way up into the sky, strong smells swirling around you, you panicked to skate away when a pair of strong headlights blinded you. You scrambled to the sidewalk and bumped into another woman, who only turned to shout at you.
You backed into an empty alley way as you watched the crowd pass by.
Feeling scared but strangely, feeling set free too.

She’s Everything. He’s Just Ken.
Tumblr media
Pairing: Kento Nanami x f!Reader
Summary: Kento is a stay-at-home husband for a wife who seems to have multiple jobs
Warnings: Pure Fluff
*just a drabble, and if you couldn’t tell I’m very excited for the barbie movie
Discord +18 - Twitter - Ko-Fi
Tumblr media
The moment Kento got married, his wife assured him that she’d be able to handle all the costs of the house. Kento never really got to know her job, and it seemed like she was job hopping from time to time. Sometimes he thought she was a doctor, and other times he swore he saw her wearing an astronaut suit.
Either way, Kento never really worried because his wife managed to pay for everything. And now he’s like a trophy husband, which he doesn’t mind. He gets to sit back and relax while his wife pays for everything. But of course, he has to make sure everything is ready for his wife.
“Blissa, get down from the fridge.” Kento lectures the cat, however, she stays in her place. Kento tries to get her to come down, but he fails. He’s not going to get on top of the counter to get her to come down– But he ends up getting on top of the counter to pick her up and bring her down to the floor. He has nothing better to do anyway. She ends up going elsewhere, probably to the living room to scratch the couch.
“Stupid cat.” He mutters, although he adores that cat more than anything. Blissa is what keeps him company while his wife is out working some thrilling and exciting job. He looks for the recipe book to start making a cake, since he has nothing else to do. He already cleaned, did laundry, organized everything– He can’t think of anything else he could do.
“Kento! I’m home!” You yell, and he stops looking for the recipe book and walks to the front door. He greets you with open arms, and you run to hug him and kiss him. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, honey.” He responds as he takes your purse from your hands and puts it away. “How was work?”
“Work was great.” You answer. “What about you?”
“Everything is great…” He says, knowing he hasn’t done much while you’re probably out there saving the world. “I was about to make a cake, do you want to join me?”
“Sure.” You smile and you follow him to the kitchen. He begins to look for the recipe book while you wash your hands. He finds the recipe book and turns to the right page, and you begin to bake.
It becomes too much for you quickly. You instead end up sitting down on the kitchen island as you watch your husband do all the baking. You cheer him on and he just laughs. “So what were you doing at your job today?”
“You know.. This and that.” You respond, watching your husband crack two eggs into the pink bowl. “Just a little flying and—“
“Flying?” Kento interrupts and you furrow your eyebrows before nodding in response. “What do you do, honey? I thought you were a doctor.”
“I’m a pilot, baby. I thought you knew that.” You nonchalantly answer, as if it’s something so logical. He doesn’t understand how you’re here now. Maybe it just wasn’t a long flight. You were gone a reasonable amount of hours, so Kento tries to make sense of it all.
He pecks your lips and mutters an apology, and you grab the collar of his shirt and pull him into a more heated kiss. As much as he doesn’t want to pull away, he still has to finish baking a cake for you. You’ll continue later. He tries to turn away so you won’t see his pink cheeks.
“Did you say hi to Blissa?” Kento questions and you shake your head. You begin to call for her,
“Tsk tsk tsk, come here kitty.” You say as you pat the space next to you on the island. It lets Kento know why Blissa is always climbing the counters. Blissa ends up climbing the counter, and Kento doesn’t say anything because in the end, you pay for everything. Although he does side-eye as you pet the cat.
“I’m thinking about quitting my job.” You share while Blissa purrs under your hand.
“And doing what?” He asks as he looks for a container for the cake.
“Becoming an envelope licker.” You answer, making Kento hold back a laugh. He stops looking for a container and walks towards you. He cups your face before pecking your lips.
“This is why I love you, honey.”

He's Just Ken
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: You're just Barbie, perfect on the outside, dead on the inside. He's just Ken, neither perfect on the outside nor on the inside.
Author's note: I condone neither patriarchy nor matriarchy. But I do love exploring different forms of mental exhaustion and extreme emotional dependency.
Warnings: Mental abuse, dark mental headspace, mentions of suicide and self-harm (only if you read between the lines), yandere behavior, yandere Ken,
Tumblr media
Not every Barbie has a Ken. Not one for herself anyway. Every Barbie knows a Ken, but that Ken most likely belongs to her friend, or her neighbor, or one of the other Barbies. Not every Barbie has a Ken, but every Barbie knows a Ken. You know one too, one with sandy hair and ocean eyes. And a look that longs for something more. You know a Ken who keeps his heart from breaking by crossing his fingers and praying to the Malibu sun. You know a Ken who's only happy if a certain Barbie looks his way. Or rather you knew. This was before the world fell apart. This was before he destroyed it.
Ken returned without Barbie and the universe began to crack. It's fine you thought. It's fine you hoped. Ken -That Ken, the one who waited on the beach for hours on end until his Barbie walked by- returned from the real world preaching sermons on how the Kens were better, superior, the rightful rulers of Barbieland. How they didn't need the Barbies, how they no longer needed to settle for being treated as anything less than perfect. How they needn't be number two any longer. Ken returned without Barbie and the universe wept.
You've always known the real world was a messed up place. It had become evident when the thoughts started to creep in. That was years ago-albeit you'll admit you have no idea if Barbie years and human years aligned- years since you started to feel like a constant failure. Years since that harrowing voice began screeching endless dreadful thoughts into your cranium. Notions that festered your mind and heart, tiny maggots that chewed away at your soul. There was always something wrong and it was somehow always your fault. Then came the pain. Horizontal pangs that shot across your arm. Always in the same spot, always in a cluster of three. Barbies don't feel pain as intensely as humans, at least they're not supposed to.
You worried for your human back then. You truly did. But you were always too scared to leave Barbieland. Never brave enough to go find her. She's fine you hope...you doubt it though.
You also refused to go see Weird Barbie. Too scared of being labeled as anything less than perfect. So long as these thoughts merely remained inside you and no outward defects began to show, you would be fine. You could just pretend like everything was as perfect as it always had been.
Ken came back from the real world unscratched. Yet his words hit a chord within every other Ken. They began to take over. The Barbies were reduced to accessories. Pretty little things that clung to their lovers. Dressed in short skirts and maid outfits. Turned into what they weren't.
Ken destroyed what once was perfect. Yet all you could think as you watch the pillars of your homeland cripple and your friends descend into madness. Was how utterly beautiful he was.
The world turned upside down.
Barbieland fell.
Kendome rose.
And yet as everything the Barbies had worked all so hard to build came crumbling down. As your friends and neighbors began to lose themselves and submit to a tyrannical patriarchy. You found yourself utterly unaltered. Your world had been destroyed long ago. This was just another calamity that you would fake your way through. It would be easy, a lifetime of practice finally paying off. Stay quiet, stay in the shadows, no one would notice.
No one was supposed to notice...
Ken found you on the beach one night. A day or two after the hostile Ken takeover. He walked up behind you out of breath as if he'd been running.
The bonfire crackles, a warning, and a love song. Until now you'd only ever existed in his sideview. An afterthought as he impaled his heart and called it love. You had burned yourself in his rays and called it love. You're convinced neither of you knows what love truly is. The moon's rays dance as you two sit side by side. In the distance, you see Blue Mermaid Barbie and Mermaid Ken share a tender kiss. An unparalleled sight.
Ken sits next to you. Eyes following your every move. Scanning every dip and curve of your plastic corpse. He's just Ken you remind yourself with an uneasy breath. He's just Ken, nothing to fear. Although you're not entirely sure if those old ideologies shine through. He's Ken but somehow he's become unstable at worst, flammable at best. Something radioactive ticks inside of him waiting to detonate. Waiting to make the world feel a trace of his pain.
Ken's fingers intertwine with yours as waves of helplessness crash across your body. You were created to be ethereal yet all you see is perfection molded in the shape of Ken's face. He leans in, carelessly placing his chin in the subspace of your neck as he whispers. "I see the way you look at me" his warm breath tickles the shell of your ear. You flinch, in time with the breaking of the waves. "I know you want me" Reality blurs when Ken touches you. He pulls you between his legs as his lips kiss the back of your neck. His fingers run up and down your arm as if he's trying to memorize your shape, your soul, you. It's romantic you think but all you feel is puka shell shards stabbing your flesh. You know he's dreamed of this intimacy with the other Barbie.
you wonder if in his eyes you are merely a ghost. One he resurrected with desperate love and a broken heart. You wonder if he sees her, feels her, wants her. Yet he'll settle for you. The next best thing. The other stereotypical Barbie. Somewhere along the line, your own voice sounds, foreign to you. He's talking, his voice is smooth like silk. Fragile like window glass after a bombing. He asks you something, something you've dreamed of for all so long. He asks you to be his bride wife. You agree despite how degrading it sounds.
What once was a pink haven of fun and joy has now been turned into a mess of horses and black sunglasses. Barbie's dreamhouse is now Ken's Mojo Dojo Casa House. You feel like an intruder, like a traitor. You feel loved, wanted, needed. Someone once told you that truths can co-exist. It's all you can think to save yourself from going mad.
There's an unspoken easiness that comes with being with Ken. The way he's always around. His hands never leave you, tracing stars on your arms, running through your hair. He wants his presence to be felt.
"I like this" you confess one night as you rest your head on his arm. "I've always felt...less than perfect. Like I couldn't be good at anything like the other Barbies." Ken laughs and it feels like the stars have cladded you in their warmth. He pinches your nose with a soft smile. "I know the feeling," he mutters and you feel your heart crack. "But you don't have to worry about that. I'm here and so long as you're with me. We're both going to be perfect." You snuggle into his chest as you close your eyes. "Ken and Barbie" you sing, a mantra, a prayer. One for a better future. One for a happy life.
You have a dream house. Had one at least. You sometimes wonder which Ken lives there now. You wonder if his Barbie feels your presence radiating off the walls and the floor and the heart-shaped night lamp you once treasured. You certainly feel Stereotypical Barbie's presence echoing from every corner. You see her ghost whenever Ken pulls you onto his lap to watch a horse flick. Infuriated and distressed. You wonder if she's angry because you didn't join the rebellion. You wonder if she's angry because she thinks you took Ken away. You see her ghost again, feel her between the pause of two breaths. She glitches and fades as you hide your face in Ken's mink coat.
"I don't like being apart from you" Ken claims as he lays your body on top of his. One hand dangling off the couch the other curling your loose locks. To Ken a touch away feels like being galaxies apart. You kiss his chin and his cheek and his nose and finally his lips. It feels like a dream. One you refuse to wake up from.
Ken is gold.
Unmetable and solid.A kaleidoscope of hope
He has so much potential rotting inside of him.
Ken is gold.
Beautiful and everlasting.
His value lies in how pretty he is. How good of an accessory he's willing to be.
You wonder if he's sick of being gold.
You felt Barbie's ghost again today. This time looming and aggravated. She wants her presence acknowledged. She has something she needs to say. Ken was out, one of the rare times you two spend apart. Something about a beach off and rock paper scissors.
You wonder if a ghost haunting is their way of showing love.
You wonder if the Kens starting a rebellion is their way of showing love.
Barbie talks for ten minutes straight. You cling to every word, you forgot how much you missed the Other Barbie's voice. It's in the final beat of her sentence that you notice she's not a ghost. Not this time. This is Barbie, the girl who had been your friend since the day you left your box. "Help me" she pleads as she grabs your shoulders. "We need to fix this", you turn your head and smile a broken smile. "I can't" you confess.
It's easy to undo brainwashing. Even easier to reinstate it. What Stereotypical Barbie and her friends can undo. You can simply redo. Even Barbies prefer ease, a few simple half-truths sung into the right ear at the right time. And the once normalized Barbies are running back to their Kens. You turn, in the rays of the golden sun, you see Barbie. Her eyes hold glimmers of unshed tears. She wears her betrayal on her pink sleeve. "Why" she whispers as her fingers reach out to hover over your heart before she retracts them. You think you may have burned her. You think she's afraid of being plagued by your depravity.
You feel like a traitor, like a monster. A creature made of pink lipgloss and shattered vows. should Kendom fall, you know your delicate dream life will fall with it. You stare into her eyes. And the words that leave your mouth feel so rehearsed, yet you swear it's the first time you've uttered them. "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you both when you went through hell. I'm sorry I wasn't there when the world collapsed and you ran from the debris. I'm sorry I can't help you pick up the pieces and rebuild what once was yours.., ours. I'm sorry I'm so selfish".
Immortal hearts are cursed with the loneliest beats. Maybe that's why the other Barbies never bothered to ponder their endless existence. Maybe that's why the Kens always clung to false promises of love. Maybe saying I love you is the same as saying I'm letting you go. Stereotypical Barbie has already reached this conclusion, you know this. For a fraction of a juncture, she looks into your eyes. Trying to reason and plea and hope all in the same breath. When you say nothing more her eyes shine with grief as she turns on her heels and runs for the hilled house. You reach out to her, yet only grasp the warm Malibu breeze.
What do you call a person such as yourself?
Coward...
That sounds about right.
Ken kisses your neck, and it feels like lava sprinkling along your skin. You feel like a defeated soldier drowning in a sea of guilt. Survivor's guilt a voice echo inside your head familiar yet all so distant. A ghost from a past life or a current one unseeable to you. "I have it too" the voice replies. You wonder if it's the voice of an angel or a mortal girl. You don't tell him about the Barbie resistance or how easily they can reverse the brainwashing. You work best alone anyway.
You hear the word death replay in the background as Ken bites a sensitive spot. A faint noise, a haunting whisper. You hear the word death and it sounds more familiar than the name Barbie that has rolled off your tongue every day since birth.
Ken harbors you inside the once was dreamhouse like a forbidden secret. Sometimes the skirts feel too short. Sometimes the world feels too heavy. You always feel the eyes of the other Kens on you. You think Ken planned it that way to show the Ken world who you belong to. Just last week he took you to the beach. Both of you wearing matching pastel blues and silver earrings. Other Ken was there also adorned in pastel blue and silver earrings. You see the twitch in your Ken's jaw, the icy glare when Other Ken waves to you. "Let's go," he says, commandes really. He throws you over his shoulder and you're heading back the way you came. "I really wanted to see Mermaid Barbie..." You pout. "No no, you wanted to see a movie remember?" Ken corrects you, to be honest, he does that often. You're starting to doubt you even know your own wants anymore.
Today Ken has you dressed in a pink and white dress. You remember Setrotypical Barbie use to love this dress. You run around the kitchen cooking a pretend dinner. You really want to go shipping, to pick out something you'd like. A rose pink Lolita skirt and a matching button-up. You really want to die. Although that's normal you always want to go shopping. You always want to die. You wonder if Ken will ever let you pick out your own dresses. You leave his plate in front of him as you loop your arms around his neck. You rest your chin on his head as he pulls you closer. Not picking your own clothes is a small price to pay for the intimacy you've craved for far too long.
"Never has there ever been a girl as pretty" Ken whispers as he relishes in your presence.
"Do you have any idea what you are?" He rasps, his lips hovering over yours. You're both sitting on the bed, watching the sun die for the day.
Ken is a monster. At least that's what you're supposed to think. You have something in your mind something that squirmes around in what can only be described as reason. To call it wits and a conscious would be an overstatement. Lucide is a better word. Weak and brittle yet somehow still standing. Deep inside, your heart refuses to call Ken anything other than hero, savior, salvation.
"I'm yours" it's the first truth that's left your mouth in a long long time. You cup his cheeks and kiss him with all the doom and gratitude that lies within you. And Wow Ken tastes like mint ice cream and shooting stars. Like dead dreams that lay on the tip of your tongue. He's the beach at night and the evermore gardens during the day. He's everything good and confusing and painful and sweet. Ken nibbles your ear, playfully, and coos sweet words into your soul. Spinning tales of how you'll be together forever. You soak in his presence, rolling his name around in your head. You keep your head filled with him before your own thoughts give you a heart attack.
You're Barbie but now you are so much more than that. You're his Barbie. Ken's Barbie. Damaged yet simultaneously perfect. And he's perfect too, mesmerizing when the sun's rouge rays kiss his pretty face, bathing him in golden ichor.
You wonder if perfection and imperfection have always been in love.
Sometimes in the dead of night, you think of the little girl playing with you. Albit she isn't a little girl anymore, is she? Kids grow up. clawing and biting through the painful transformation. Sometimes it leaves their minds fragmented. Sometimes it leaves them less than whole.
Judging by how long it's been, your little girl is grown up by now. You close your eyes and give Ken a final kiss before sleep overtakes you. You hope she's okay, even though you know that can never be true. Being "okay" doesn't seem to be a real thing in this universe.
Because girls are broken and the universe knows this
Because boys are broken and the universe knows this
Because the universe does nothing. Just sits there and watches as life bends and breaks itself over and over again
Barbieland is broken too, imperfect and destroyed.
And so are the two of you.
Yet in the end, it doesn't matter.
For as broken as the world is the most important of things has been resolved.
Ken has his Barbie.
And Barbie has her Ken.

Times I cried during the barbie movie (based on my hazy recollection, it was an emotional night):
BARBIE SPOILERS AHEAD
When Barbie sits on the bench and sees the real world and looks at the kids and couples and friends and the tree oh my god I lost it
When Barbie told the old woman on the bench how beautiful she was
When Barbie goes into the office with the other old woman (I realized it was Ruth immediately and the weight of her getting to see her creation, the doll she made for her daughter and other little girls like her. to get to talk to the little thing you made at your kitchen table. it punched me in the gut)
During Ken's song when he says "I'm just Ken (and I'm enough)" because so often boys are told that they have to be everything, they have to be leaders and heroes and can never cry or be weak and its exactly what society does to women and it hurts no matter your gender
When the tween hugs her mom again, the face the mom made just killed me. at one point I was that little girl who was so worried and so scared and so tired of the world and I pushed my mom away too and the thought of hurting her like that. I can't even put it in words
When Barbie is making the decision to become human I started crying a little but then the Billie Eilish song came on and that sequence started and I just started fully sobbing
so six times total

Ken Can't Do Flips But He Sure Can Strip
Ken x gn!reader
Prompt: Ken stripping for you would be fun to watch
Author's notes: Ahhh wouldn't this be SO much fun and the hottest thing to witness? I'm not even doing requests right now but I HAD to write a drabble inspired by this one 🫶 the urge to add 'by Fall Out Boy' to the end of the title was overwhelming
Also, I thought it would be cute if this is the song he’s stripping to:
Warnings/content: NSFW, gn!reader, stripping, slightly messy blow job, sub!Ken, praise, silly Ken moments, Ken’s glittery cum 💖
‘I’d love to see you strip for me,’ you coo seductively, caressing Ken’s strong, chiselled arms as you cuddle lazily in bed and he gazes at you.
‘Yeah, I can do that!’ Ken agrees eagerly, but just as quickly as he volunteered, deep thought spreads across his face and furrows his brow. ‘Um… how do I actually… do a strip?’
You chuckle softly, pressing your lips affectionately to his shoulder and grabbing your phone to search for an example to show him.
Ken watches with curiosity as you turned the screen to him, and his sparkling eyes widen as he takes it all in.
‘Wow,’ Ken breathes, ‘that’s kind of… sexy...’
He's unsure of saying that word. He almost whispers it. You call him sexy a lot, but it feels foreign out of his mouth. Yet it’s the only word he can think of to describe the way the video makes him feel; a buzz of excitement and a surge of determination with a quite overwhelming wave of… attraction?
‘Yeah. I can do that for you,’ he says with certainty, as though he’s been given the most important job of his life.
***
An hour later, after some requested alone time to ‘get his routine together,’ you’re beckoned back to the bedroom by a slightly skittish Ken to sit on the bed, where he stands before you, takes a deep breath, and starts the music.
He rolls his hips, hypnotising you with the undulations as he runs his hands over his partially clothed torso, teasing a reveal of his pecs before moving a finger to drag down your chest. It leaves tingles in it's wake, the music becoming a distant blur of sound.
You’re so lost in a haze of anticipation, you almost fail to notice that he’s such a fast learner. There are moves thrown into his routine that weren’t even in the short (and fairly tame) clip you’d shown him, and you wonder if he made them up himself or if he googled How to do a strip?
You smile at the thought, but don’t wonder about it for too long because the sight before you is just too gorgeous to focus on anything else.
Ken is so turned on too that it’s increasingly hard not to reach out and pull him to you, but you want him to at least finish the song and see where he’s taking this. It's far too fascinating, far too exciting, far too hot to bring this rollercoaster of anticipation to an end just yet.
He bites his lip, concentrating endearingly hard on thrusting his hard cock in your face, and you can’t decide whether it’s cute or hot or both.
Definitely both.
Heat pools at your core as you watch him move, flexing his muscles and snapping his hips, a light sheen of glimmering sweat forming over his tanned skin - most of which has been revealed to you by now - while the rest of his clothes discarded on the floor behind him.
You shift in your seat on the edge of the bed, aching to touch that perfect plastic chest, maybe move your hand lower to tease, ending in you being stuffed full of him while he moves his hips just the way he’s doing it right now...
Thankfully, the song’s almost over and when he thrust his hips in the air one last time to rip his underwear clean off and end his little show, you couldn't wait a second longer to touch him and immediately take his throbbing, glistening cock into your mouth.
‘Oh! Ughhh-ahghh! Mhh!’
Ken steadies himself, large hands gripping your shoulders while his eyes roll back and his jaw drops to let our a sting of incomprehensible pleas mixed with desperate moaning.
He knows he can’t hold off. He's far too worked up about the whole striping thing and being sexy enough for you to focus on not cumming.
So he cums hard, whining as his knees buckle beneath him. You hold him up as best you can while your cheeks hollow around his length and he fills your mouth so fast that his shimmering cum dribbles out onto your chin, while you try to catch every drop of that gorgeous, glittery slick that you can.
You swallow down what you can of his seed and wipe your face, the pink glitter spreading over the back of your hand, as he collapses onto the bed beside you, face down and unmoving all but for his heaving chest for a moment.
‘You did such a good job for me… such a talented Ken.’
‘I… couldn’t… last,’ he whines, pained, eyes shutting tight in shame as you encourage him to turn and face you.
‘Oh but you needed to cum, didn't you, baby?’ you soothe, stroking his cheek as he cautiously opens one eye to dare look at you. ‘And you deserved it after putting on such pretty display just for me. You did such a good job.’
He whimpers, nodding as his his fingers fumble at your clothes. ‘Need to touch you-’
‘There’s time for that,’ you whisper, laying back and snuggling into him with a mischievous grin. ‘Maybe I’ll strip for you...’ you tease.
Ken’s head drops back down hard and a feeble sound escapes on his sudden exhale of breath. You never thought you'd witness an actual swoon.
‘Then that’s decided,’ you giggle, pulling him close.
