The monastic life first emerged as a definite institution in Egypt at the start of the fourth century, and from there it rapidly spread across Christendom. It is no coincidence that monasticism should have developed immediately after Constantine's conversion, at the very time when the persecutions ceased and Christianity became fashionable. The monks with their austerities were martyrs in an age when martyrdom of blood no longer existed; they formed the counterbalance to an established Christendom. Men in Byzantine society were in danger of forgetting that Byzantium was an icon and symbol, not the reality; they ran the risk of identifying the kingdom of God with an earthly kingdom. The monks by their withdrawal from society into the desert fulfilled a prophetic and eschatological ministry in the life of the Church. They reminded Christians that the kingdom of God is not of this world.
Monasticism has taken three chief forms, all of which had appeared in Egypt by the year 350, and all of which are still to be found in the Orthodox Church today. There are first the hermits, men leading the solitary life in huts or caves, and even in tombs, among the branches of trees, or on the tops of pillars. The great model of the eremitic life is the father of monasticism himself, Saint Antony of Egypt (251-356). Secondly there is the community life, where monks dwell together under a common rule and in a regularly constituted monastery. Here the great pioneer was Saint Pachomius of Egypt (286-346), author of a rule later used by Saint Benedict in the west. Basil the Great, whose ascetic writings have exercised a formative influence on eastern monasticism, was a strong advocate of the community life. Giving a social emphasis to monasticism, he urged that religious houses should care for the sick and poor, maintaining hospitals and orphanages, and working directly for the benefit of society at large. But in general eastern monasticism has been far less concerned than western with active work; in Orthodoxy a monk's primary task is the life of prayer, and it is through this that he serves others. It is not so much what a monk does that matters, as what he is. Finally there is a form of the monastic life intermediate between the first two, the semi-eremitic life, a 'middle way' where instead of a single highly organized community there is a loosely knit group of small settlements, each settlement containing perhaps between two and six brethren living together under the guidance of an elder. The great centres of the semi-eremitic life in Egypt were Nitria and Scetis, which by the end of the fourth century had produced many outstanding monks - Ammon the founder of Nitria, Macarius of Egypt and Macarius of Alexandria, Evagrius of Pontus, and Arsenius the Great.

do you think there is any chance Rubin will start growing ny hair out on his head again? because (considering your lore about him) the time he was trying to remain celibate is gone, so not a monk; the time when he was at war is gone (well, maybe not fully of course. one can simply imagine such things don't go away so easily. but still), and now he's not a soldier. is it #Bald forever or is there hope?
this is such a beautiful ask i love the world it conjures (which is mine) okay let's do this.
ok in my mind's eye rubin pre-The Baldening had long hair like pretty long hair. longer than current-events peter but shorter than pre-events peter [who had it to the waist or something]. so the transformation of long haired -> bald was immediate, drastic and jarring. in p2 burakh says "I'll be damned… you shaved your head. Preparing to become a monk? Or a soldier?" & since in p2 the Rubin War Lore doesn't stand (however i make it stand) the Monk thing is like. as possible as the soldiering. (in canonverse i don't think he meaningfully contemplated monkness[?] because he is not like pious in that way, however he'd have considered hermiticism/secular anchoritism). so he went from long-haired to Bald for multiple reasons, including asceticism, sharp separation with his old life (some cultures have hair-cutting as a traditions of grief), and also because a ponytail in the army is not that useful or safe (but most of the reasons are internal/psychological in nature).
as the Events unfold however... i think he considers growing his hair back he does. however, he needed decades to grow his hair as long as it got to be, so he hesitates, because the awkward stage of bald -> meaningfully long is like. pretty damn long. he's not sure he wants to deal with the short scruff of growing back out a buzzcut. he might just stay #Bald forever. sorry.
in the concept of of the peterstakh [you are on the peterstakh blog.] i think on one hand peter Would Love to see him with his long hair... but it'd take a while... so in the meantime he creates dreams out of pictures he's shown of rubin age 20 with his long hair. he creates dreams and he braids their hair together. in dreams. also purely as a "opposite attracts" thing: the concept of Bald x Luscious very entertaining to me. also i think peter loves his #Baldness because he gets to do shit like this:

The Rose Cross Ritual
Original Golden Dawn version of the basic ritual.
1. Light a stick of incense. Go to the South East corner of the room. Make a large cross and circle thus:
and holding the point of the incense in the center vibrate the word Yeheshuah.
2. With arm outstretched on a level with the centre of the cross, and holding the incense stick, go to the South West corner and make a similar cross, repeating the Word.
3. Go to the North West corner and repeat the cross and the Word.
4. Go to the North East corner and repeat the cross and the Word.
5. Complete your circle by returning to the South East corner and bringing the point of the incense to the central point of the first cross which you should imagine astrally there.
6. Holding the stick on high, go to the centre of the room, walking diagonally across the room towards the North West corner. In the centre of the room, above your head, trace the cross and circle and vibrate the Name.
7. Holding the stick on high, go to the North West and bring the point of the stick down to the centre of the astral cross there.
8. Turn towards the South East and retrace your steps there, but now, holding the incense stick directed across the floor. In the centre of the room, make the cross and circle towards the floor, as it were, under your feet, and vibrate the Name.
9. Complete this circle by returning to the South East and bringing the point of the stick again to the centre of the Cross, then move with arm outstretched to S.W. corner.
10. From the centre of this cross, and, raising stick before, walk diagonally across the room towards the North East corner. In the centre of the room, pick up again the cross above your head previously made, vibrating the Name. It is not necessary to make another cross.
11. Bring the stick to the centre of the North East cross and return to the South West, incense stick down, and pausing in the centre of the room to link up with the cross under your feet.
12. Return to the South West and rest the point of the incense a moment in the centre of the cross there. Holding the stick out, retrace your circle to the North West, link on to the N.W. Cross --- proceed to the N.E. cross and complete your circle by returning to the S.E., and the centre of the first cross.
13. Retrace the cross, but larger, and make a big circle, vibrating for the lower half Yeheshuah, and for the upper half Yehovashah.
14. Return to the centre of the room, and visualise the six crosses in a net-work around you. This ceremony can be concluded by the analysis of the Key-Word given as follows:
1. Stand with arms outstretched in the form of a cross. Face East.
2. Vibrate these words:
I. N. R. I.
Yod-Nun-Resh-Yod
The sign of Osiris Slain.
3. Right arm up, left arm extended out from shoulder, head bowed toward left hand.
L. --- The Sign of the Mourning of Isis.
4. Both arms up in a V shape.
V. --- The Sign of Typhon and Apophis.
5. Arms crossed on breast, head bowed.
X. --- The Sign of Osiris Risen.
6. Make the signs again as you repeat L.V.X.
L.V.X. Lux.
7. Arms folded on breast, head bowed.
The Light of the Cross.
8. Then arms extended in the Sign of Osiris Slain (see 1).
Virgo - Isis - Mighty Mother
Scorpio - Apophis - Destroyer
Sol - Osiris - Slain and Risen
9. Gradually raise arms.
Isis - Apophis - Osiris
10. Arms above head, face raised.
I. A. O.
11. Except when in the Vault, now vibrate the four Tablet of Union Names to equilibriate the Light.
Exarp - Hcoma - Nanta - Biton
12. Aspire to the Light and draw it down over your head to your feet.
Let the Divine Light Descend.
1. It encloses the aura with a protection against outside influences. It is like a veil. The Pentagrams protect, but they also light up the astral and make entities aware of you. They are more positive for magical working. When much distracted, use the Pentagrams to banish and the Rose-cross to maintain peace.
2. It is a call to another mode of your consciousness and withdraws you from the physical. It is a good preparation for meditation and, combined with the Key-Word, a form of invocation of the Higher Wisdom which is helpful when solving problems or preparing for a difficult interview, or in order to be calm and strong to help another.
3. When you are quite familiar with the Ritual, but most certainly not before, it can be done in imagination while resting or lying down. Part of yourself goes out, and you get all the sensation of walking around your own quiescent body. Used thus, with rhythmic breathing, it will withdraw your mind from pain (if it be not too severe) and release you for sleep. You can do the analysis of the Key-Word standing behind your physical head, and you can call down the Divine White Brilliance, watching it flow over your body and smooth out the tangles in the etheric double, bringing peace and rest.
4. You can do the Ritual with intention to help others in pain or difficulty. For this purpose, you build up an astral image of the person, in the centre of the room, and call down the Light upon him, after surrounding him with the six crosses. When the ceremony is done, command the astral shape you have made to return to the person, bearing with it the peace of Yeheshuah.
5. It is a protection against psychic invasion from the thoughts of others or from disturbed psychic conditions, such as there might be in a place charged with fear, where terrible things had happened.

Do you know how to find an affordable edition of the Keys of Solomon that isn't terrible ? I'm growing desperate, even the super cheap used ones that I find are super expensive because of the shipping rates to Europe.
It depends on what version your looking for specifically. The Keys of Solomon are largely available for free online, either in a downloadable pdf form or just available to read online. If your looking for a specific author’s version then you may struggle, but really the internet is your best friend here.
And I say that as a technophobe. Unless your local library has a well stocked occult and hermiticism section.

You Know What?
I guess I've been trying too hard (trying) to be friends with all the wrong people. I mean, how dare I try to help everyone? I'm too ugly or that! People will listen to the stupidest things from a pretty face and call it gold, but when someone looking like me says it they brush it aside, deny it, or downplay the statement.
"Psh, Uggo, I already knew that capitalism exists because there is a lower class that is perpetually Beezy-Slapped by the upper class in order to consolidate their power."
"OMG, Tan-Skin, you're so right! Beauty is only skin deep! Except for you, because your spilled-coffee-on-the-table level of intellect means you have such a vibrant, living soul and I just want to-"
You get the idea. I really hate my existence and the fact that I feel that my only reason being here is to help people and people don't want my help. If God had a sense of humour here, the punchline would be me throwing myself and a toaster in a bathtub, ending it all, because that's the only point of my life, right God? :D
All jokes aside, I'm tired of it. Sure, I need to lose weight to max my PT score, but I'm sure as f*** going to stiff arm all the people who comment on my weight loss and "suddenly want to hang out".
"Trick you wasn't wit me sweatin' in da gym"
But I'm off that Drake though, I need to replace him with some Young the Giant.
Anyways, yeah. I'm closing my emotional doors as of today,, June 28, 2012, until further notice. People don't want to be helped, they want some infantile fantasy to be fulfilled and have the childlike sense of ignorant bliss they once shared, and will incessantly whine and complain instead of moving on and trying to create it for themselves. Don't get me wrong: I want this too. But maybe because I'm surrounded by hypocritical people who can tell me to live logically I've convinced myself that there's no room for emotional logic (or whatever it is). Once I get enough money, and a Shiba Inu I'm logging off from society.
